Doctrine Analysis
3 John — Full Doctrine Analysis
Destination Language: Marathi (Devanagari script)
Scope and Method
3 John is a single-chapter, fourteen-verse letter. Per the PRD Phase 1 full-book-coverage mandate, this document treats the entire letter, verse by verse, 1:1–1:14, as the analysis scope — not merely the core passage (which in this curriculum is coextensive with the whole book: 3 John 1:1–14). Every verse is accounted for below, either under a load-bearing doctrine or explicitly marked “reviewed — no new doctrinal load.”
The doctrine set, risk tiers, and review routing below are identical to assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (version 1): 8 doctrines total — 5 High, 2 Medium, 1 Low — with the same names, same marathi_doctrine_name values, same key terms, and same routing. No tier has been altered. This document adds the full verse-level supporting-passage matrix and translation-risk reasoning that the registry entries summarize.
Doctrine Matrix (Full Book)
| # | Doctrine (EN) | Marathi Doctrine Name | Risk | Supporting Passages (3 John) | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | प्रवासी सेवकांचे आतिथ्य | High | 1:5, 1:6, 1:7, 1:8 | Risk of collapsing into the Sanskrit-derived cultural maxim अतिथी देवो भव (generic guest-honor) or merit-earning charitable दान; must be anchored as Christ-centered gospel-partnership hospitality shown “for the sake of the Name,” to workers taking nothing from unbelievers. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Imitating Good rather than Evil | वाइटाचे नव्हे तर चांगल्याचे अनुकरण | High | 1:11 | ”Does good is of God / does evil has not seen God” must read as observable evidence of an existing relationship with God, never as merit-earning (guards against पुण्य / karma-merit economy and Buddhist self-cultivation ethic); “does evil” must never echo the caste-Hindu birth-karma explanation of misfortune/status that Ambedkarite Buddhist communities explicitly rejected. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes) | मंडळीतील नेतृत्व आणि अहंकार (दियोत्रेफेस) | High | 1:1, 1:9, 1:10 | φιλοπρωτεύω (“loves to be first”) is a precise leadership-craving sin, not generic गर्विष्ठपणा; the elder’s modest self-title वडील (v.1) is a deliberate contrast that must be preserved; illegitimate expulsion (बाहेर काढणे) must be clearly marked as abuse of power, distinct from legitimate church discipline for actual sin. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius) | विश्वासू साक्षीदाराची प्रशंसा (देमेत्रिय) | High | 1:3, 1:12 | साक्ष vocabulary must retain gospel-testimonial weight, not ordinary secular-legal witness sense; v.12’s three-fold witness structure (universal report, personified truth, elder’s own testimony) is doctrinally load-bearing and must not be compressed into a single generic compliment; deliberately contrasts with Diotrephes’ self-asserted, unverified status. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Truth and Christian Fellowship | सत्य आणि ख्रिस्ती सहभागिता | High | 1:1, 1:3, 1:4, 1:8, 1:12, 1:14 | सत्य (the letter’s dominant term, all 14 verses in view) collides with Gandhian सत्याग्रह, Hindu Brahman-attribute usage, and the Buddhist “Four Noble Truths” (चार आर्य सत्ये) familiar from Ambedkarite instruction; every occurrence must be anchored to the Johannine referent — gospel reality of and fellowship grounded in Christ — never left as an abstract philosophical/moral principle. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Gospel Workers’ Financial Integrity | सुवार्ता सेवकांची आर्थिक सचोटी | Medium | 1:7 | ἐθνικός here (“pagans/unbelieving outsiders”) is a narrower sense of अन्यजातीय than the Romans curriculum’s Jew/Gentile unity theme; requires a translator note distinguishing the two curricula’s usage so students do not conflate this doctrine with “Unity of Jews and Gentiles.” | Native speaker review |
| 7 | Spiritual Well-Being and Prosperity | आध्यात्मिक स्वास्थ्य आणि भरभराट | Medium | 1:2 | The comparative clause (“prosper… just as your soul prospers”) must be preserved so spiritual flourishing remains the benchmark; dropping the qualifier risks an unconditional prosperity-gospel misreading of भरभराट होणे. | Native speaker review |
| 8 | Personal Fellowship and Greeting (Peace) | वैयक्तिक सहभागिता आणि शांतीचे अभिवादन | Low | 1:13, 1:14 | Standard epistolary closing; minor risk that शांती merges with मनःशांती (inner calm via bhakti/meditation) rather than relational peace between believers — low risk given the plainly personal-greeting context, per baseline distinction already established for शांती. | Automated review |
Risk summary (must match doctrine_risk_registry.json exactly): Critical: 0 · High: 5 · Medium: 2 · Low: 1 · Total requiring theologian review: 5 · Total requiring native speaker review: 2 · Total automated-only: 1.
Verse-by-Verse Coverage (Full Book, 1:1–1:14)
This table demonstrates that every verse of 3 John has been reviewed, whether or not it introduces new doctrinal load. Verses contributing no new term or doctrine beyond what is already covered are marked explicitly rather than silently omitted.
| Verse | Content Summary | Active Doctrine(s) | Key Terms in Play | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | ”The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.” | Church Leadership and Pride (elder’s modest self-title, contrast setup); Truth and Christian Fellowship | वडील, प्रिय, सत्य | Opens both the leadership-contrast thread (elder vs. Diotrephes, resolved v.9-10) and the truth/fellowship thread (सत्य, resolved throughout). |
| 1:2 | ”Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.” | Spiritual Well-Being and Prosperity | जीव, भरभराट होणे, निरोगी असणे | Comparative clause is the doctrinal anchor; see Doctrine Matrix #7. |
| 1:3 | ”For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth.” | Commendation of Faithful Witness; Truth and Christian Fellowship | साक्ष देणे, सत्य, (सत्यात) चालणे, बंधू | First of two witness-bearing verses (with v.12); establishes “walking in truth” as observable conduct, not abstract assent. |
| 1:4 | ”I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” | Truth and Christian Fellowship | सत्य, (आध्यात्मिक) लेकरे, (सत्यात) चालणे | Spiritual (not biological) children; reinforces v.3’s conduct-truth link. |
| 1:5 | ”Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are.” | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | विश्वासू, बंधू, परके | Introduces the hospitality thesis; “strangers” (परके) is the section’s central term — see Doctrine Matrix #1. |
| 1:6 | ”…who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God.” | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers; Church as corporate witness (subsumed under Church Leadership doctrine’s corporate-accountability dimension) | प्रीती, मंडळी, प्रवासासाठी सहाय्य करून पुढे पाठवणे, देवाला शोभेल असे | προπέμπω technical sense (material provisioning) must not be flattened to a bare farewell — flagged High in glossary #19. |
| 1:7 | ”For they have gone out for the sake of the Name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles.” | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers; Gospel Workers’ Financial Integrity | ख्रिस्ताच्या नावासाठी, अन्यजातीय | Dual doctrine verse: hospitality’s motivating principle (“the Name”) and the narrower, curriculum-specific sense of अन्यजातीय requiring a translator note (Doctrine Matrix #6). |
| 1:8 | ”Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.” | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers; Truth and Christian Fellowship | कर्तव्य असणे / ऋणी असणे, आश्रय देणे, सहकारी, सत्य | ὀφείλω must read as relational, grace-motivated obligation, never merit-earning duty; “fellow workers for the truth” links hospitality directly to the truth doctrine. |
| 1:9 | ”I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority.” | Church Leadership and Pride | मंडळी, प्रमुखपदाची हाव धरणारा | Thesis verse for the Diotrephes doctrine; φιλοπρωτεύω must not be flattened to generic “proud” — see Doctrine Matrix #3. |
| 1:10 | ”…he refuses to welcome the brothers, and also stops those who want to and puts them out of the church.” | Church Leadership and Pride; Hospitality to Traveling Ministers (negative counter-example) | स्वीकारणे, अडवणे, (मंडळीतून) बाहेर काढणे, दुष्ट शब्दांनी चहाडी करणे, आठवण करून देणे, बंधू | Illegitimate expulsion must be distinguished from legitimate church discipline — a required distinction per Doctrine Matrix #3; also functions as hospitality’s negative foil against v.5-8. |
| 1:11 | ”Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is of God; whoever does evil has not seen God.” | Imitating Good rather than Evil | अनुकरण करणे, चांगले, वाईट, चांगले करणारा, वाईट करणारा, पाहिले आहे | Thesis verse for this doctrine; guard against both karma-merit misreading and birth-karma/status misreading — see Doctrine Matrix #2. |
| 1:12 | ”Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself. We also testify for him, and you know that our testimony is true.” | Commendation of Faithful Witness; Truth and Christian Fellowship | साक्ष, साक्ष देणे, सत्य, खरे / सत्य आहे | Three-fold witness structure (universal report / personified truth / apostolic testimony) must not be compressed — see Doctrine Matrix #4; direct structural contrast with Diotrephes (v.9-10) who has no such external commendation. |
| 1:13 | ”I had much to write to you, but I would rather not write with pen and ink.” | Personal Fellowship and Greeting | (epistolary convention only) | No new doctrinal term; reviewed and confirmed low-risk, standard closing convention. |
| 1:14 | ”I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face. Peace be to you. The friends greet you; greet the friends, each by name.” | Personal Fellowship and Greeting (Peace); Truth and Christian Fellowship (closing echo) | समोरासमोर, शांती, मित्र, आशा करणे | शांती here is relational/epistolary blessing, not मनःशांती — low risk per baseline distinction; “friends” (मित्र) closes the letter’s fellowship theme distinct from बंधू’s covenantal-family register. |
Coverage confirmation: All 14 verses of 3 John are accounted for above. No verse is silently omitted. Verses 1:13 is explicitly noted as contributing no new doctrinal or terminological load beyond standard epistolary convention already covered under Doctrine #8.
Cross-Doctrine Interactions
Several verses carry more than one doctrine simultaneously; these interactions must be preserved in Phase 2 translation and are flagged here so segment-level review does not treat them as single-doctrine segments:
- v.1 — Church Leadership and Pride + Truth and Christian Fellowship: the elder’s self-designation (वडील, not a title of preeminence) is the literary and theological set-up for the Diotrephes contrast resolved in v.9-10, while “whom I love in truth” opens the सत्य thread that runs through the whole letter.
- v.6–8 — Hospitality to Traveling Ministers + Truth and Christian Fellowship: hospitality shown to gospel workers is explicitly framed as partnership “for the truth” (v.8), tying the two High-risk doctrines together; translators must not treat सहकारी (fellow worker) as generic teamwork disconnected from सत्य.
- v.7 — Hospitality to Traveling Ministers + Gospel Workers’ Financial Integrity: same verse, two doctrines at different risk tiers (High and Medium respectively); the High-risk “for the sake of the Name” clause and the Medium-risk अन्यजातीय clause must both be preserved without either doctrine’s nuance bleeding into or diluting the other.
- v.9–10 vs. v.12 — Church Leadership and Pride vs. Commendation of Faithful Witness: Diotrephes (self-asserted, unverified, condemned) and Demetrius (externally, multiply attested, commended) are Johannine literary opposites; translation must preserve this structural antithesis (e.g., consistent साक्ष root reserved for legitimate testimony, never applied approvingly to Diotrephes’ own self-report).
- v.11 — Imitating Good rather than Evil, read immediately after v.9-10 and before v.12: functions as the letter’s moral hinge, applying the general good/evil principle to the specific Diotrephes/Demetrius contrast that surrounds it. Translators should retain verse order and connective logic (γάρ-type inferential force where present) so this hinge function is not lost.
Consistency Statement
This doctrine matrix introduces no doctrine, risk tier, or routing decision beyond what is recorded in assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (version 1). All Marathi doctrine names, key terms, and risk tiers above are copied or directly derived from that registry and from analysis/08_core_glossary.md. Any future revision to risk tier or routing must update both this file and the registry together to preserve pipeline consistency, per the baseline Language Package’s version-increment discipline.
Prepared for Phase 1, Step 4 of the TRI pipeline for the 3 John curriculum. Cross-reference analysis/08_core_glossary.md for term-level rationale and assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json for the machine-readable routing record consumed by Phase 2 Step 17.
High Risk Doctrines
Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Marathi name: प्रवासी सेवकांचे आतिथ्य
Key terms: stranger, send forward, support/receive, ought/obligated, the Name, fellow worker, brothers
Review routing: Human theologian
Maharashtra’s well-known Sanskrit-derived maxim अतिथी देवो भव (‘the guest is God’) gives genuine cultural common ground but risks collapsing this doctrine into generic Hindu guest-honor custom or merit-earning charitable दान (dāna), both familiar in Hindu and Buddhist devotional/ethical practice. The commendation here is specifically for Christ-centered hospitality shown ‘for the sake of the Name’ (v.7) to gospel workers who took nothing from unbelievers — active, material gospel partnership, not general guest-veneration or a duty performed for one’s own merit.
Imitating Good rather than Evil
Marathi name: वाइटाचे नव्हे तर चांगल्याचे अनुकरण
Key terms: imitate, good, evil, does good, does evil, has seen God
Review routing: Human theologian
The pairing ‘does good is of God / does evil has not seen God’ must be taught as observable evidence of an already-existing relationship with God, never as the means of earning or maintaining that relationship — guarding against assimilation to the Hindu karma-merit economy (पुण्य) or the Navayana Buddhist Eightfold Path’s self-cultivation ethic. Equally, ‘does evil has not seen God’ must not be phrased in any way that echoes the caste-Hindu birth-karma explanation of misfortune or low status, a framework Ambedkarite Buddhist communities in Maharashtra explicitly and painfully rejected; this is present character evidence, not a verdict on birth-status or fixed cosmic standing.
Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
Marathi name: मंडळीतील नेतृत्व आणि अहंकार (दियोत्रेफेस)
Key terms: elder, loves to be first, receive/welcome, forbid/hinder, cast out/expel, maliciously accuse
Review routing: Human theologian
The rare NT term φιλοπρωτεύω names a precise leadership-craving sin, not generic pride (गर्विष्ठपणा); collapsing it to a vague word for arrogance would lose the doctrine’s diagnostic force, which is precisely status-craving control within मंडळी. The elder’s own modest self-title (वडील, v.1) is a deliberate contrast that must be preserved. Additionally, Diotrephes’ illegitimate expulsion (बाहेर काढणे) of believers must be clearly marked as an abuse of power, not confused with legitimate biblical church discipline for actual sin — a distinction essential for this curriculum’s students to grasp correctly.
Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius)
Marathi name: विश्वासू साक्षीदाराची प्रशंसा (देमेत्रिय)
Key terms: testify, testimony, true/truthful, truth
Review routing: Human theologian
साक्ष (testimony) vocabulary must retain gospel-testimonial weight and not flatten into ordinary secular-legal witness language. 3 John 1:12’s three-fold commendation structure (universal report, personified ‘the truth itself,’ and the elder’s own apostolic testimony) is doctrinally load-bearing and must not be compressed or reduced to a single generic statement of praise, since the doctrine depends on recognizing all three distinct sources of witness as together establishing Demetrius’s reliable character, in deliberate contrast with Diotrephes’ self-asserted, unverified status.
Truth and Christian Fellowship
Marathi name: सत्य आणि ख्रिस्ती सहभागिता
Key terms: truth, love, walk (conduct), children (spiritual), friends, peace
Review routing: Human theologian
सत्य (truth), the letter’s dominant term across all fourteen verses, collides with heavily loaded independent categories in Maharashtra’s religious landscape: Gandhian सत्याग्रह, Hindu philosophical usage of सत्य as an attribute of Brahman, and the Buddhist ‘Four Noble Truths’ (चार आर्य सत्ये) taught throughout Ambedkarite Buddhist instruction. Every occurrence must be anchored explicitly to its Johannine referent — the gospel reality of and fellowship grounded in Christ — so it is never left as an abstract philosophical or moral principle a Warkari or Navayana Buddhist reader could read entirely through their own tradition’s category of सत्य.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Gospel Workers’ Financial Integrity
Marathi name: सुवार्ता सेवकांची आर्थिक सचोटी
Key terms: gentiles/pagans, the Name, brothers
Review routing: Native speaker review
The missionaries’ refusal to accept support from ἐθνικός (‘pagans/unbelieving outsiders’) uses a narrower sense of अन्यजातीय than the Romans curriculum’s Jew/Gentile unity theme (‘non-Jewish peoples’ generally); a translator note is needed so students moving between the Romans and 3 John curricula do not conflate ‘Unity of Jews and Gentiles’ with this passage’s distinct point about gospel workers’ financial independence from unbelieving patronage.
Spiritual Well-Being and Prosperity
Marathi name: आध्यात्मिक स्वास्थ्य आणि भरभराट
Key terms: soul, prosper, health
Review routing: Native speaker review
The comparative clause (‘prosper… just as your soul prospers’) must be preserved so that spiritual flourishing remains the benchmark for outward well-being; dropping this qualifier risks an unconditional prosperity-gospel misreading of भरभराट होणे that the source text does not intend.
Low Risk Doctrines
Personal Fellowship and Greeting (Peace)
Marathi name: वैयक्तिक सहभागिता आणि शांतीचे अभिवादन
Key terms: peace, friends, face to face, hope
Review routing: Automated review
Standard epistolary closing; minor risk that शांती could merge with the inner calm (मनःशांती) sought through bhakti or Buddhist meditative practice rather than relational peace/blessing between believers, per the baseline’s existing distinction — low risk given the plainly relational, personal-greeting context here.
