Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis: 1 John (Koine Greek → Marathi)

Scope and Method

This document analyzes the full text of 1 John, chapter 1 through chapter 5, in the original Koine Greek. The core passage, 1 John 4:7-21, receives verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing theological terms using the same analytical fields:

  • Original word (Greek, with Strong’s-style gloss where useful)
  • Transliteration
  • Literal meaning
  • Semantic range (the span of meaning in Koine usage)
  • English variants (how major English versions render it)
  • Contextual theological meaning in 1 John
  • Destination-language (Marathi) rendering and risk

Where a term is already recorded in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json, the established Marathi rendering is reused exactly and is marked “[BASELINE REUSE].” Where 1 John introduces a term not covered by the Romans baseline, a new candidate rendering is proposed here for formal registration in Step 2 (glossary/translation memory extension).

Maharashtra’s two dominant traditions relevant to risk assessment — Warkari bhakti Hinduism (devotion to Vitthal, centered at Pandharpur, expressed through kirtan, wari pilgrimage, and abhang poetry) and Navayana (Ambedkarite) Buddhism (the 1956 mass conversion, refuge in the Buddha/Dhamma/Sangha, the Eightfold Path, rejection of caste-karma) — are both weighed for every Critical/High term, consistent with the baseline’s method.

PART 1: CORE PASSAGE — 1 John 4:7-21 (Verse-by-Verse)

1 John 4:7

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMarathi rendering & risk
ἀγαπητοίagapētoibeloved onesterm of affectionate address among believers”beloved,” “dear friends”John’s pastoral address to the congregation, grounding the command to love in shared identity as loved onesप्रिय जनहो (priya janho) — Low risk; standard epistolary address, no collision.
ἀγαπῶμεν (from ἀγαπάω)agapōmenlet us lovevolitional, self-giving love; distinct from ἔρως (desire) and φιλία (affection/friendship)“let us love”Hortatory subjunctive — a command flowing from what God has already done, not a demand to generate feeling from nothingआपण एकमेकांवर प्रीती करू — see ἀγάπη below for full risk discussion.
ἡ ἀγάπηhē agapēthe loveself-giving, willed love that seeks the good of another regardless of merit in the object”love”The defining attribute and activity of God himself (v.8), the source (ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ) of any genuine human love for othersप्रीती (prīti) — Critical risk. Marathi has an established Bible-tradition word, प्रीती, distinct from प्रेम (which in popular Marathi usage, especially in film and literature, carries strong romantic/erotic connotation) and further distinct from भक्ती/भक्तिप्रेम, the devotional love a Warkari directs toward Vitthal (which is devotee-initiated reverence flowing toward a chosen deity, not God’s own self-giving nature flowing toward the unworthy). It must also be distinguished from करुणा (karuṇā), the Buddhist virtue of compassion cultivated by the practitioner through the Eightfold Path — agapē in 1 John is not a cultivated inner state but God’s own essential nature (v.8, v.16), given to believers as a gift, not achieved. Recommend प्रीती as the fixed rendering for ἀγάπη/ἀγαπάω throughout 1 John, paired with translator notes at each doctrinally load-bearing occurrence.
ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦek tou theouout of/from Godsource, origin”from God,” “of God”Love’s origin is not human effort but God himselfUses [BASELINE REUSE] परमेश्वर (Parameśvar) for θεός — see God, below.
γεγέννηται (from γεννάω)gegennētaihas been begotten/bornperfect passive — a completed act with continuing effect; birth/begetting, literal or spiritual”is born,” “has been born”New birth as a past, completed, Spirit-wrought act with ongoing present reality — foundational to “Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth”देवापासून जन्मलेला आहेCritical risk. This is the technical phrase for spiritual new birth central to 1 John (cf. 2:29; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1,4,18). It must be carefully distinguished from पुनर्जन्म (Hindu reincarnation/rebirth into a new bodily existence) and from the Buddhist technical पुनर्भव (rebirth of aggregates without continuous self) — both already flagged as forbidden substitutions for “resurrection” in the Romans baseline, and the same collision risk applies here with even greater force, since “born of God” is a recurring, structurally important doctrinal marker throughout this book (see New Birth glossary entry).
γινώσκει (from γινώσκω)ginōskeiknowsexperiential, relational knowledge (not merely intellectual assent)“knows”To know God relationally, evidenced by love for others — not gnosis as esoteric enlightenmentजाणतो / ओळखतो — Medium risk. Must not be rendered with vocabulary suggesting a Gnostic-style secret knowledge (a live concern in 1 John’s original context) nor with a term implying meditative self-realization (a risk given some readers’ Buddhist background, where “knowing” can suggest insight attained through practice rather than relational acquaintance granted by new birth).

1 John 4:8

Greek: ὁ μὴ ἀγαπῶν οὐκ ἔγνω τὸν θεόν, ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίν.

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMarathi rendering & risk
ὁ μὴ ἀγαπῶνho mē agapōnthe one not lovingnegated participle, characterizing a settled pattern of non-love”whoever does not love”The absence of love is presented as diagnostic, not merely deficient behaviorजो प्रीती करत नाही तो — Medium risk; ensure negation is unambiguous in Marathi syntax.
ἔγνω (aorist of γινώσκω)egnōknew/has knownaorist — summary statement of a state never entered”does not know”Categorical: never having entered relational knowledge of Godत्याला देव माहीत झालाच नाही / तो देवाला ओळखत नाही
ὁ θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίνho theos agapē estinGod love is (God is love)predicate nominative without article on ἀγάπη — a quality of God’s essence, not “God is a love” or “God is the love-principle""God is love”One of 1 John’s two great definitional statements about God’s nature (with “God is light,” 1:5) — describes God’s essential character, not merely his actionsदेव प्रीती आहेCritical risk. This is the doctrinal center of the whole curriculum. It must be taught, not merely translated, alongside “देव प्रकाश आहे” (1:5) as a pair defining God’s nature. Risk of syncretism is acute: Warkari devotional literature is saturated with language of Vitthal’s love/compassion for his devotees (bhakti-prema), so a reader may initially file this alongside an already-familiar devotional sentiment rather than recognize it as an ontological claim about the one true God’s essential nature, prior to and the ground of any human response. It must also be guarded against a vague, feeling-based “universal love” reading that would flatten it into either the diffuse compassion (karuṇā) taught as a cultivated virtue in Navayana Buddhist ethics, or an abstract impersonal principle. See Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love in the glossary.

1 John 4:9

ἐφανερώθη (from φανερόω)ephanerōthēwas manifested/revealedto make visible/known what was previously hidden”was manifested,” “was revealed,” “was shown”God’s love is not abstract; it became historically visible in a concrete, datable event: the sending of the Sonप्रकट झाली (prakaṭ jhālī) — High risk, tied to Incarnation doctrine. Must convey a one-time, historical disclosure, not a recurring theophany or periodic avatar-appearance.
τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν μονογενῆton huion autou ton monogenēhis only-begotten/unique Sonμονογενής = one-of-a-kind, unique, not “only” in a merely numerical sense but unrepeatable in kind”his only begotten Son,” “his one and only Son,” “his unique Son”Christ’s unique, non-derivative Sonship — no other being shares this relation to the Fatherत्याचा एकुलता एक पुत्रCritical risk, extending baseline [BASELINE REUSE] देवाचा पुत्र. Must never be softened to suggest Christ is one honored son among many, nor assimilated to Vaishnav avatar theology (Vitthal/Krishna as one of several divine descents) nor to a Bodhisattva-type figure who is one of many enlightened beings across cosmic time. “एकुलता एक” (the one and only) is essential — this is new, 1 John-specific vocabulary not present in the Romans baseline and should be added to translation memory.
ἀπέσταλκεν (from ἀποστέλλω)apestalkenhas sentperfect tense — a completed sending with continuing significance; official/purposive sending, root of ἀπόστολος”sent,” “has sent”The Father as sender, the Son as sent — not self-generated appearanceपाठवले आहे — Medium risk; shares root with [BASELINE REUSE] प्रेषित (apostle = “sent one”), reinforcing consistency.
εἰς τὸν κόσμονeis ton kosmoninto the worldthe created order / humanity in its fallen, God-opposing orientation (see also κόσμος below)“into the world”The Son entered the very world alienated from God — a real, historical entranceजगात — new term; see World, below.
ζήσωμεν (from ζάω)zēsōmenwe might liveaorist subjunctive; to live, with 1 John’s frequent extension to ζωὴ αἰώνιος (eternal life)“we might live,” “we might have life”Life is the purpose/result of the Son’s sending — anticipates the “Eternal Life” doctrine developed further in ch. 5आपल्याला जीवन मिळावे — see Eternal Life, ch. 5 glossary entry.

1 John 4:10

οὐχ ὅτι ἡμεῖς ἠγαπήκαμεν τὸν θεόνouch hoti hēmeis ēgapēkamen ton theonnot that we have loved Godnegates human initiative as the ground of love”not that we loved God”Directly rules out a devotee-initiated love as the basis of the relationship — this is doctrinally decisive against any reading of grace/love as a human achievementMust retain the negation’s full force in Marathi: आपण देवावर प्रीती केली म्हणून नाही — High risk if softened; would collapse into a merit-based bhakti framework the text explicitly excludes.
ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶςēgapēsen hēmashe loved usaorist, decisive past act”he loved us”God’s love is prior, unearned, initiating — see also v.19त्याने आपल्यावर प्रीती केली
ἱλασμὸν περὶ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶνhilasmon peri tōn hamartiōn hēmōna propitiation concerning our sinsἱλασμός = the means by which God’s righteous wrath against sin is satisfied and turned to favor; distinct from mere “expiation” (removal of guilt with no reference to wrath)“propitiation,” “atoning sacrifice,” “the sacrifice that atones for”Christ himself, sent by the Father, as the propitiatory sacrifice — the objective ground of forgiveness developed further in 1:7-2:2आपल्या पापांसाठी प्रायश्चित्त (āpalyā pāpānsāṭhī prāyaścitta) — Critical risk. प्रायश्चित्त is the standard Marathi Bible-tradition rendering, but the word’s everyday Hindu-cultural sense is a self-performed penance or expiatory ritual undertaken by the guilty party to atone for their own wrongdoing (a common concept in vrata/penance practice). The text’s point is the exact opposite: the propitiation is given by God himself and accomplished in the Son, not a penance the sinner performs. Every occurrence (2:2; 4:10) requires either a qualifying phrase (e.g., “देवाने स्वतः दिलेले प्रायश्चित्त,” “the propitiation God himself gave”) or a standing translator note preventing the self-performed-penance reading. Recommend flagging for human theologian review at every occurrence, on par with the Romans baseline’s atonement/propitiation escalation rule (Romans 3:25).

ὀφείλομεν (from ὀφείλω)opheilomenwe owe/are obligatedmoral debt/obligation language”we ought,” “we are obligated”Believers’ love for one another is a response-obligation flowing from having received God’s love first, not an independent duty earning meritआपणही एकमेकांवर प्रीती करणे आपले कर्तव्य आहे — Medium risk: “कर्तव्य” (duty) must not be allowed to drift toward a caste-dharma-style obligatory-duty reading (cf. baseline’s rejection of “धार्मिक कर्तव्य” for obedience_of_faith); frame as grateful response-obligation, not merit-earning performance.

1 John 4:12

μένει (from μένω)meneiabides/remainsto dwell continuously, stay, remain in a fixed relational state”abides,” “remains,” “lives in”Key Johannine term for mutual, permanent indwelling between God and the believer — central to Fellowship with God doctrineराहतो / वास करतो (rāhto / vās karto) — High risk. This verb (μένω) recurs constantly through 1 John (2:6,10,14,24,27,28; 3:6,9,14,17,24; 4:12,13,15,16). It must be rendered consistently. Risk: “वास करणे” (to dwell) could be assimilated to a pantheistic reading of the divine indwelling all beings (a resonance with Hindu Brahman-atman immanence) or to Warkari devotional imagery of Vitthal “residing in the devotee’s heart” understood poetically rather than as the literal, personal, Trinitarian indwelling of the Holy Spirit this text describes (v.13). A standing translator note distinguishing personal Trinitarian indwelling from pantheistic immanence is recommended at first occurrence (2:6) and reinforced at 4:12-16.
τετελειωμένη ἐστίν (from τελειόω)teteleiōmenē estinhas been perfected/completedto bring to its intended goal/completeness, not “perfect” as flawless but “complete,” “fully realized""is perfected,” “is made complete”God’s love reaches its intended completion/expression in and through believers who love one anotherपूर्ण झाली आहे (pūrṇa jhālī āhe) — Medium-High risk. Must not be read as human effort perfecting/completing God’s love by merit (an echo of self-cultivation ethics); rather love reaches its designed goal when it is expressed through believers as its intended channel.

Full phrase: त्याने आपल्याला त्याच्या पवित्र आत्म्यातून दिले आहे — Medium risk: must not be phrased so as to suggest a partitive, divisible “portion” of an impersonal divine substance (a possible Brahman-emanation misreading); the Spirit given is the whole, personal, undivided Holy Spirit at work in the believer.

Must convey a confidence grounded in Christ’s finished work and God’s declared verdict (cf. baseline’s नीतिमान ठरवणे, justification), not self-generated courage or confidence earned by accumulated merit/good karma. This is the same conceptual territory as the baseline’s Assurance of Salvation doctrine, extended here to the specific scene of final judgment.

PART 2: WHOLE-BOOK CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY

Chapter 1 — Fellowship, Light and Darkness, Confession and Cleansing

1 John 1 introduces the eyewitness testimony to the incarnate Word, then pivots to two of the curriculum’s eight doctrines: “God is Light” and “Confession and Forgiveness of Sin.”

lightφῶςphōslight (literal and figurative)moral purity, truth, self-revealing holiness, opposite of moral darkness”light""God is light and in him is no darkness at all” (1:5) — a definitional statement about God’s essential moral nature, paired with “God is love” (4:8,16)प्रकाश (prakāś) — Critical risk, new term for translation memory. Must be carefully distinguished from: (1) Warkari devotional imagery of divine light/darshan (the radiant vision of Vitthal’s murti granted to a devotee), and (2) the Buddhist association of “light” with bodhi (enlightenment attained through the Eightfold Path). Here, light names God’s own moral perfection and self-disclosing truthfulness — a claim about his unchanging nature, not an experience granted to or attained by a practitioner. Pairs directly with the baseline’s caution on गौरव (glory) avoiding light-only imagery.
darknessσκότος / σκοτίαskotos / skotiadarknessmoral corruption, falsehood, alienation from God”darkness”The opposite pole from God’s light; walking in darkness means living in unconfessed sin and falsehoodअंधकार (andhakār) — Medium risk; standard moral-metaphor term, low ambiguity once paired correctly with प्रकाश.

Must be clearly distinguished from institutional/ritual confession requiring a human mediator or from prāyaścitta-style self-administered penance that earns pardon; 1:9 grounds forgiveness in God’s own faithful and just character and in Christ’s cleansing blood (1:7), received through confession, not merited by it.
faithful and justπιστὸς καὶ δίκαιοςpistos kai dikaiosfaithful and righteous/justGod’s reliable, covenant-keeping character and his righteous consistency in forgiving on the basis of Christ’s work”faithful and just”God forgives not despite his justice but because his justice has been satisfied in Christ (cf. propitiation, 2:2; 4:10)Uses [BASELINE REUSE] नीतिमत्त्व-family vocabulary for δίκαιος; विश्वासू आणि न्यायी — Medium-High risk: keep both attributes (covenant faithfulness AND judicial righteousness) rather than collapsing into a single generic “good.”
cleanseκαθαρίζωkatharizōto make clean, purifyritual and moral purification vocabulary in Koine usage”cleanses,” “purifies”The blood of Jesus effects real moral cleansing from sin’s guilt and defilement — a spiritual, not ritual-physical, purificationशुद्ध करते (śuddha karte) — High risk. शुद्ध was already flagged in the baseline (rejected for “holy,” pavitra’s alternative) as leaning toward ritual purity. Here it is unavoidable as the verb “cleanse,” so a translator note is required distinguishing this moral cleansing accomplished once for all through Christ’s atoning blood from ritual/ceremonial purification (snana, ritual bathing, purificatory rites common in Hindu practice) which must be repeated and is self- or priest-administered.
blood (of Jesus)αἷμαhaimabloodthe sacrificial, atoning, life-poured-out death of Christ”blood”The objective, historical basis of cleansing from sin — not a generic symbol but Christ’s actual atoning deathरक्त (rakta) — Medium-High risk: ensure the phrase consistently reads “येशूचे रक्त” (the blood of Jesus specifically), not a generalized sacrificial-blood concept assimilated to animal-sacrifice traditions (yajna) where blood/life is offered by a worshiper to a deity for merit; here God himself provides the sacrifice.

Chapter 2 — Advocate, Propitiation, Antichrist, Anointing, Love of the World

TermGreekTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual meaningMarathi rendering & risk
advocateπαράκλητοςparaklētosone called alongside (to help/defend)legal advocate/defense counsel; also used of the Holy Spirit in John’s Gospel”advocate,” “helper,” “one who speaks in our defense”Christ himself as the believer’s defense before the Father when sin is committed (2:1) — distinct from the Spirit-Paraclete of John 14-16, though the same rootमध्यस्थ (madhyastha) — High risk, built on the root shared with [BASELINE REUSE] मध्यस्थी (intercession). Must be clearly Christ’s own legal-defense role before the Father based on his propitiatory death, not a generic mediating guru/saint figure interceding on a devotee’s behalf (a role filled by various sant-figures in Warkari devotional practice, or by bodhisattva-like intercessory figures in some popular Buddhist devotion). Recommend distinct compound if needed in Step 2, e.g. “आपला मध्यस्थ ख्रिस्त.”
propitiationἱλασμόςhilasmospropitiatory sacrificesee 4:10 above”propitiation,” “atoning sacrifice”Christ himself as the propitiation for the sins of the whole world (2:2), extending scope beyond the immediate communityप्रायश्चित्तCritical risk; see full discussion at 4:10.
antichristἀντίχριστοςantichristosagainst-Christ / in place of Christa false-Christ figure or spirit opposing/replacing the true Christ; both a specific future figure and a present spiritual tendency/movement”antichrist”Denial that Jesus is the Christ, come in the flesh — the doctrinal test at the heart of Testing the Spirits and Incarnation doctrinesख्रिस्तविरोधी (khristavirodhī) — High risk, new term. Must not be assimilated to an existing culturally available “cosmic adversary” figure (e.g., a Kali Yuga degeneration narrative, or a messianic-reversal figure from other traditions); this is specifically a denial of the apostolic confession about Jesus’ identity, present already in John’s own day as false teachers “who went out from us” (2:19), not a single future world-ruler exclusively.
anointingχρῖσμαchrismaan anointingthe Holy Spirit’s teaching ministry granted to all believers, as opposed to esoteric knowledge held only by a spiritual elite”anointing”Every believer, not just spiritual specialists, has the Spirit’s anointing that teaches them truth (2:20, 27) — directly counters incipient Gnostic elitismअभिषेक (abhiṣek) — High risk. अभिषेक is a live, active ritual term in Hindu practice (ceremonial anointing of a deity’s murti with milk, water, honey, etc. — e.g., Shiva-abhisheka, a common devotional act). A translator note is required clarifying this is the Holy Spirit’s inward teaching ministry given to every believer at conversion, not a repeatable external ritual act performed upon a sacred object or person.
lust of the flesh / eyes; pride of lifeἐπιθυμία τῆς σαρκός, ἐπιθυμία τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν, ἀλαζονεία τοῦ βίουepithymia tēs sarkos, epithymia tōn ophthalmōn, alazoneia tou bioudesire of the flesh, desire of the eyes, arrogance/boastfulness of lifethe threefold catalog of worldly desire opposed to the Father’s love (2:16)“the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life”Defines “the world” (κόσμος) practically, as a system of disordered desire competing with love for the Father — key to Overcoming the World doctrineदेहवासना, डोळ्यांची वासना, जीवनाचा गर्व — Medium risk; standard moral vocabulary, low ambiguity.
worldκόσμοςkosmosworld, world-order(1) the created physical order (neutral); (2) humanity in general; (3) the God-opposing system of values and desires (the dominant sense in 1 John)“world”The object believers are commanded not to love (2:15) and are given power to overcome (5:4-5) — an organized system, not simply “the earth”जग (jag) — High risk, new term for translation memory, distinct across senses (1)-(3) above; requires context-sensitive handling flagged at each occurrence (paralleling baseline’s handling of “called”). Overcoming “the world” in 1 John must not be conflated with Buddhist teaching on overcoming worldly attachment/craving (taṇhā) through self-disciplined practice on the Eightfold Path — here, overcoming the world is explicitly grounded in faith in the Son of God (5:4-5), a gift received, not a state attained by effort.
last hourἐσχάτη ὥραeschatē hōralast hourthe final period of redemptive history, inaugurated by Christ’s first coming and marked by the rise of antichrists”the last hour,” “the last time”Linear, decisive eschatological time, not a repeating cosmic-age cycleशेवटची घटका / अंतिम काळ — Medium-High risk; must be linear/historical, not cyclical (cf. baseline’s fulfillment_of_prophecy notes on Hindu yuga cycles).
little children / children (address)τεκνία / παιδίαteknia / paidialittle childrenterms of pastoral affection, not doctrinal status markers (distinct from τέκνα θεοῦ, “children of God” as a theological status in ch. 3)“little children,” “dear children”John’s affectionate pastoral address to his readersलाडक्या मुलांनो / मुलांनो — Low risk; address form only.
abideμένωmenōsee 4:12see 4:12”abide,” “remain,” “continue”The recurring exhortation to remain in Christ’s teaching, in the truth, in the light — introduced here (2:6, 10, 14, 24, 27, 28) ahead of its doctrinal density in ch. 3-4राहणेHigh risk; see full discussion at 4:12. First occurrence (2:6) is the right place to fix the rendering and attach the standing translator note.

Chapter 3 — New Birth, Righteousness vs. Lawlessness, Children of God, Love in Deed

TermGreekTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual meaningMarathi rendering & risk
children of Godτέκνα θεοῦtekna theouchildren of Goda granted, relational status-identity, given (not achieved) by the Father’s love (3:1)“children of God”Believers’ new, given identity — closely related to but distinguishable from the Romans baseline’s formal legal-adoption termदेवाची मुले / लेकरे (devācī mule / lekare) — High risk; relates to but is distinct from [BASELINE REUSE] दत्तक पुत्रत्व (adoption, the formal legal/inheritance dimension developed in Romans 8). 1 John emphasizes the given, loving, relational dimension of this identity (“what manner of love the Father has given us, that we should be called [κληθῶμεν, cf. baseline बोलावलेले] children of God”). Recommend cross-referencing both terms in translation memory so Phase 2 translators recognize the doctrinal continuity without collapsing the two Greek terms into one.
sin (defined) / lawlessnessἁμαρτία … ἀνομίαhamartia … anomiasin … lawlessness3:4 gives sin its definition: “sin is lawlessness” — ἀνομία = the state of being without law, or transgression against law”sin is lawlessness,” “sin is the transgression of the law”Ties sin directly to violation of God’s revealed will/law, not merely a feeling of guilt or ritual defilementपाप म्हणजे नियमशास्त्राचे उल्लंघन (pāp mhaṇaje niyamśāstrāce ullaṅghan) — High risk, new term for ἀνομία specifically. The baseline’s सिन entry explicitly rejected अधर्म as a rendering (for the general term ἁμαρτία) because of its caste-Hindu resonance; that rejection applies with equal or greater force here, since ἀνομία is even more literally “lawless-ness.” Building the phrase on [BASELINE REUSE] नियमशास्त्र (law) keeps consistency and avoids the rejected word entirely: “नियमशास्त्राचे उल्लंघन” (transgression/violation of the law) rather than a single-word “अधर्म” rendering.
practice righteousnessποιέω τὴν δικαιοσύνηνpoieō tēn dikaiosynēnto do/practice righteousnesshabitual righteous conduct as evidence of new birth (3:7, 10), not the forensic righteousness of justification (Romans’ primary sense)“practices righteousness,” “does what is right”Ethical fruit that evidences (not earns) new birth — must be distinguished from Romans’ forensic-declaration sense of righteousness while still using the same root termUses [BASELINE REUSE] नीतिमत्त्व-root: नीतिमत्त्वाचे आचरण करतो — Medium-High risk: a translator note is recommended clarifying that here the emphasis is on righteous practice as fruit/evidence of new birth (1 John’s characteristic ethical-test language), not a restatement of forensic justification (Romans’ primary sense for the same root term) — avoiding confusion between these two related but distinct uses of the same Marathi term.
devilδιάβολοςdiabolosslanderer, accuserthe devil as the ultimate source/originator of sin (3:8, “the devil sins from the beginning”)“the devil”Personal, malevolent spiritual being opposed to God — grounds the moral seriousness of sin in personal spiritual conflict, not impersonal cosmic imbalanceसैतान (saitān) — Medium risk; standard established Marathi Christian term.
seed (of God)σπέρμαspermaseedthe divine, generative principle/nature implanted in the believer at new birth (3:9), enabling a settled orientation away from habitual sin”his seed,” “God’s seed”The organic, God-given internal principle underlying the new birth’s transforming powerबीज (bīj) — Medium-High risk, new term. Must not be assimilated to a Hindu/Buddhist notion of an inherent divine spark or Buddha-nature already present in all beings awaiting self-realization; 1 John presents this as implanted at the specific, decisive event of new birth, not an innate universal potential.
lay down (one’s) lifeτίθημι τὴν ψυχήνtithēmi tēn psychēnto lay down the soul/lifesacrificial self-giving, modeled on Christ’s own death (3:16), extended as the pattern for love of the brethren”laid down his life,” “lay down our lives”Christ’s atoning death as the pattern and standard for costly, self-giving love within the churchआपला जीव अर्पण करणे — Medium risk; standard sacrificial-language phrase.
bowels of compassion / heart of compassionσπλάγχναsplanchnainward parts, viscera (ancient seat of emotion)compassionate response to a brother’s material need (3:17)“bowels of compassion,” “compassion,” “pity”Compassion evidenced concretely in material generosity toward a brother in need — the practical test of love in deed and truth (3:18)करुणा / कनवाळू अंतःकरण (karuṇā / kanavāḷū antaḥkaraṇ) — High risk. करुणा is the central term of Buddhist ethics (one of the four brahmavihāras cultivated through meditative practice), and its use here risks readers assimilating this compassion to a self-cultivated virtue attained through disciplined practice rather than the spontaneous fruit of a heart transformed by new birth and indwelt by the Spirit of a God who is himself प्रीती (love). Recommend either qualifying the term (“ख्रिस्ती कनवाळूपणा,” Christ-shaped compassion) or preferring “कनवाळू अंतःकरण” (a compassionate heart) as the primary rendering, reserving करुणा for cases requiring a translator note.
confidence (before God)παρρησίαparrēsiasee 4:17see 4:17”confidence,” “boldness”Confidence in prayer grounded in obedience and a clean conscience (3:21) — an anticipatory use of the same term developed fully in 4:17धैर्य / निर्भय भरवसा — see 4:17 for full risk discussion; first occurrence here (3:21) should be flagged to fix consistent rendering.
commandment / commandmentsἐντολήentolēcommandmentGod’s authoritative, binding instruction, summarized as faith in Christ and love for one another (3:23)“commandment,” “commandments”Not a checklist of ritual observances but the twin commands of faith and love that together constitute obedience of faithआज्ञा — Medium risk; see also 4:21.

Chapter 4, verses 1-6 — Testing the Spirits (introductory section to the core passage)

The core passage proper (4:7-21) is treated verse-by-verse in Part 1 above. Verses 1-6 open chapter 4 with the “Testing the Spirits” doctrine and are treated here as the chapter’s lead-in section.

test the spiritsδοκιμάζετε τὰ πνεύματαdokimazete ta pneumatatest/examine the spiritsto evaluate/discern the authenticity of a claimed spiritual source through an objective, doctrinal criterion (not subjective feeling)“test the spirits”Believers are commanded to evaluate teaching spirits against a fixed doctrinal test: confession of Jesus Christ come in the flesh (4:2-3)आत्म्यांची परीक्षा घ्या (ātmyāncī parīkṣā ghyā) — High risk. In rural and even urban Maharashtra, “testing/discerning spirits” carries strong folk-religious resonance (bhagat/mांत्रिक practices identifying possessing spirits, bhūt-pret exorcism rituals). A translator note is essential clarifying that 1 John’s test is a doctrinal test of a teaching’s content (does it confess the true incarnate Christ?), not a ritual test for spirit-possession or an occult discernment practice.
spirit of God / spirit of error (antichrist)πνεῦμα τοῦ θεοῦ / πνεῦμα τῆς πλάνηςpneuma tou theou / pneuma tēs planēsSpirit of God / spirit of error/deceptiontwo competing sources of teaching, distinguished by their confession about Christ’s incarnation”the Spirit of God,” “the spirit of error”The objective doctrinal marker for distinguishing true from false teaching sourcesदेवाचा आत्मा / भ्रमाचा आत्मा (फसवणुकीचा आत्मा) — High risk; πνεῦμα τοῦ θεοῦ uses [BASELINE REUSE] पवित्र आत्मा-family vocabulary; भ्रमाचा आत्मा (spirit of delusion/error) is new and must be clearly a doctrinal category (a false teaching-source), not a literal possessing entity in the folk sense.
confess Jesus Christ come in the fleshὁμολογεῖ Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθόταhomologei Iēsoun Christon en sarki elēlythotaconfesses Jesus Christ having come in fleshthe doctrinal test itself: acknowledging the real, historical incarnation of the eternal Son”confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh”Direct link to the Incarnation and Antichrist doctrine — denial of real, historical incarnation is the mark of the antichrist spiritयेशू ख्रिस्त देहधारी होऊन आला हे कबूल करतोCritical risk, built on [BASELINE REUSE] देहधारण. This is 1 John’s central Christological test; must unambiguously affirm real, historical, bodily incarnation — guarding against both a docetic (only-appeared-human) misreading and any assimilation to a repeatable avatar-descent or Bodhisattva-rebirth framework (see baseline’s incarnation entry).
overcomeνικάωnikaōto conquer, be victoriousto prevail over an opposing spiritual force”you have overcome them”Believers have already overcome the false-spirit teachers/false teaching, because “he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (4:4) — anchors the Overcoming the World doctrine in a Person, not a techniqueजिंकले आहे / मात केली आहे (jiṅkale āhe / māt kelī āhe) — High risk, new term for translation memory, recurring at 2:13-14, 4:4, 5:4-5. Must be grounded explicitly in indwelling divine power (“तो जो तुमच्यामध्ये आहे तो जगातील त्याच्यापेक्षा मोठा आहे,” 4:4) and in faith (5:4), not in self-effort or disciplined practice along a path — the central distinction from both Hindu spiritual-conquest (tapasya) ideals and the Buddhist Eightfold Path’s self-cultivated overcoming of craving.

Chapter 5 — Overcoming the World by Faith, Water/Blood/Spirit Witness, Eternal Life, Sin unto Death, Idols

TermGreekTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual meaningMarathi rendering & risk

witness / testimonyμαρτυρία / μαρτυρέωmartyria / martyreōtestimony / to testifysee 4:14; here God’s own threefold testimony about his Son (5:6-11)“testimony,” “witness”God’s own testimony is greater than human testimony and is the ground of assurance (5:9-11)साक्ष — Medium-High risk; see 4:14 discussion.
eternal lifeζωὴ αἰώνιοςzōē aiōnioslife everlasting/eternalnot merely unending duration but a qualitatively new, relational life in fellowship with God, given now and consummated forever”eternal life,” “everlasting life”The explicit purpose of the letter (5:13, “these things I have written…that you may know that you have eternal life”) — grounds the Assurance of Salvation doctrineसार्वकालिक जीवन (sārvakālik jīvan) — Critical risk, new term for translation memory, closely tied to [BASELINE REUSE] तारण (salvation). Must be presented as a present-possessed, relational gift (“you may know that you have eternal life,” a settled present possession) received through the Son, never assimilated to मोक्ष/मुक्ती (liberation from the rebirth-cycle attained through bhakti or right living) nor to निर्वाण (the Buddhist cessation of craving and suffering, an impersonal extinguishing rather than an everlasting, personal, relational life with God). The presently-known, assured character of this life (over against a goal attained only after death or after many lifetimes) is itself a distinguishing doctrinal claim requiring positive explanation, not just a rejected-word list.
sin unto death / not unto deathἁμαρτία πρὸς θάνατον / οὐ πρὸς θάνατονhamartia pros thanaton / ou pros thanatonsin toward death / not toward deatha specific, debated pastoral distinction (5:16-17) between sin leading to a particular divine judgment (possibly apostasy) and ordinary sin for which intercession is fruitful”sin that leads to death,” “sin not leading to death”A pastorally sensitive, theologically complex distinction requiring careful, non-dogmatic handling in teaching materialsमरणास कारण होणारे पाप / मरणास कारण न होणारे पापHigh risk, both for translation precision and because of the risk that “death” here could be read through a karma-consequence lens (sin mechanically causing death as cosmic retribution) rather than as a specific pastoral-theological category referring to apostasy/persistent unrepentant sin. Recommend a standing translator/study note flagging the interpretive debate and the need to avoid a karmic-mechanism reading.
keep himselfτηρέω ἑαυτόνtēreō heautonto keep/guard oneselfprotective vigilance maintained by the one born of God, with the implication that Christ himself is the ultimate keeper (5:18, “he who was born of God keeps him”)“keeps himself,” “God’s Son keeps him safe”Assurance that the regenerate believer is kept safe from the evil one’s touch — grounded in Christ’s keeping power, not the believer’s own vigilance aloneस्वतःला राखतो / देव त्याला राखतो — Medium-High risk; ensure the ultimate agency is Christ’s keeping, not merely human self-discipline, to avoid a self-effort/self-protection misreading.
idolsεἴδωλαeidōlaidols, imagesphysical images/representations of deities, or anything that displaces God as the object of ultimate devotion”idols”The letter’s closing exhortation (5:21, “little children, keep yourselves from idols”) — both a literal warning against image-worship and a summary call to exclusive devotion to the true God (5:20, ὁ ἀληθινὸς θεός)मूर्ती (mūrtī) — Critical risk. मूर्ती is the exact, everyday Marathi word for a sacred image or icon actively worshiped throughout Maharashtra — Ganpati मूर्ती (immersed annually at visarjan), and above all the Vitthal मूर्ती enshrined at Pandharpur, the devotional center of Warkari bhakti. This closing verse of 1 John therefore lands with unusual directness and pastoral weight for a Marathi reader with a Hindu background, and equally serves as a point of continuity for a reader from an Ambedkarite Buddhist background who has already renounced murti-worship as part of that community’s historical break from caste Hinduism. The term itself cannot be avoided (it is the correct and necessary rendering), but every occurrence requires human theologian review and a study note framing this not as a generic ethical warning but as the letter’s climactic call to undivided devotion to “the true God” (ὁ ἀληθινός, 5:20) — directly continuing the “Assurance of Salvation,” “God is Light and God is Love,” and “Overcoming the World” doctrines rather than standing as an isolated appendix.
true (God)ἀληθινόςalēthinostrue, real, genuine (as opposed to false or merely apparent)qualitative genuineness, not merely factual accuracy”true,” “real""This is the true God and eternal life” (5:20) — the letter’s final identification of the object of saving knowledge, over against idolsखरा (परमेश्वर) — High risk paired with [BASELINE REUSE] परमेश्वर; must retain the contrastive force against everything the letter has just called “idols.”
understandingδιάνοιαdianoiamind, understanding, faculty of comprehensionthe capacity to truly know God, given by the Son (5:20)“understanding”A given capacity, not a self-attained enlightenment or realizationसमज (samaj) — Medium risk; must be presented as a divine gift (“he has given us understanding,” 5:20) rather than an insight attained through meditative self-cultivation.

Summary of New Terms Requiring Translation Memory Registration (Step 2)

The following terms are introduced by 1 John and are not present in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json. All are candidates for formal registration with Critical/High risk tiers, per the analysis above: प्रीती (love/agapē), प्रायश्चित्त (propitiation), प्रकाश (light), मूर्ती (idols), देवापासून जन्मलेला (born of God/new birth), सार्वकालिक जीवन (eternal life), एकुलता एक पुत्र (only-begotten Son), ख्रिस्तविरोधी (antichrist), जग (world), राहणे/वास करणे (abide), जिंकणे/मात करणे (overcome), धैर्य/निर्भय भरवसा (confidence/boldness, parrēsia), अभिषेक (anointing), मध्यस्थ (advocate), कबूल करणे (confess), शुद्ध करणे (cleanse — verb use), करुणा/कनवाळू अंतःकरण (compassion), बीज (seed of God), नियमशास्त्राचे उल्लंघन (lawlessness), देवाची मुले (children of God).

All Romans-baseline terms reused in 1 John (पाप, विश्वास, पवित्र आत्मा, परमेश्वर, देवाचा पुत्र, तारण, सहभागिता, नियमशास्त्र, प्रेषित, पवित्र, बोलावलेले, दत्तक पुत्रत्व, मध्यस्थी-root, नीतिमत्त्व-root) must appear with their exact recorded Marathi renderings throughout, per the hard rule that established terms are never re-translated.
