Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference Analysis — Gospel of John
0. Methodology and Scope
This document maps every Old Testament quotation, clear allusion, messianic reference, and typological pattern across all 21 chapters of the Gospel of John, together with every doctrinally significant parallel to the Romans curriculum baseline already delivered in Marathi. Each row records: passage, theme, related character(s), OT/NT connection, and translation sensitivity (risk tier + grounded reason, following doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions).
Full-coverage rule applied: every chapter of John is represented below, even where a chapter contains only minor or no direct OT citations — such chapters are explicitly marked “reviewed; no direct OT citation” rather than omitted.
Citation normalization rule: all citations in this document and all downstream Phase 2 artifacts must use the normalized format {English Book Name} {chapter}:{verse} (e.g. “Galatians 2:16”, “Genesis 15:6”, “John 3:16”) in internal reference keys and QA tooling. The Marathi-facing rendered text uses the established Marathi Bible citation convention (book name in Marathi + Arabic numerals), per the baseline’s Cross-Reference Preservation Rules. The table below gives the Marathi book-name mapping for every OT/NT book cited in this analysis, extending the baseline’s existing partial list (Romans, Genesis, Psalms, Isaiah, Habakkuk, Joel).
0.1 Book Name Normalization Table (extends baseline)
| English (normalized key) | Marathi rendering | Transliteration |
|---|---|---|
| John | योहनलिखित शुभवर्तमान | Yohanalikhit Śubhavartamān |
| Genesis | उत्पत्ति | Utpatti |
| Exodus | निर्गम | Nirgam |
| Leviticus | लेवीय | Levīya |
| Numbers | गणना | Gaṇanā |
| Deuteronomy | अनुवाद | Anuvād |
| 2 Samuel | 2 शमुवेल | 2 Śamuvel |
| Psalms | स्तोत्रसंहिता | Stotrasaṃhitā |
| Proverbs | नीतिसूत्रे | Nītisūtre |
| Isaiah | यशया | Yaśayā |
| Jeremiah | यिर्मया | Yirmayā |
| Ezekiel | यहेज्केल | Yahejkel |
| Daniel | दानीएल | Dānīel |
| Hosea | होशेय | Hośeya |
| Joel | योएल | Yoel |
| Micah | मीखा | Mīkhā |
| Habakkuk | हबक्कूक | Habakkūk |
| Zechariah | जखऱ्या | Jakharyā |
| Romans | रोमकरांस पत्र | Romakarāṃs patra |
| Matthew | मत्तयलिखित शुभवर्तमान | Mattayalikhit Śubhavartamān |
Rule: When a document cites the same underlying OT verse that also appears quoted in the Romans curriculum (see §4 below), the Marathi rendering of that verse’s text must be identical across both curricula’s lesson materials, not merely the book-name label.
1. Cross-Reference Matrix by Chapter
Chapter 1 — Prologue, John’s Witness, First Disciples
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 1:1 | Deity/Pre-existence of the Word | — (narrator) | Allusion: Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created…”; conceptual link to Proverbs 8:22-30 (Wisdom present at creation) and Psalm 33:6 (“by the word of the LORD the heavens were made”) | Critical — शब्द must read as the same personal, active Agent of creation named in उत्पत्ति 1:1, not an impersonal cosmic principle; see baseline note on शब्द in 08_core_glossary.md |
| John 1:14 | Incarnation | The Word | Allusion: Exodus 25:8; 40:34-35 (God’s glory “tabernacling” with Israel); Exodus 33:18-23 (Moses and God’s glory) | High — “dwelt among us” (ἐσκήνωσεν, “tabernacled”) should carry the sense of God’s own presence coming to dwell bodily, a one-time historical event, distinct from the repeatable avatāra-descent framework already forbidden under देहधारण |
| John 1:23 | Forerunner/Messianic preparation | John the Baptist | Direct quotation: Isaiah 40:3 “the voice of one crying in the wilderness: make straight the way of the LORD” | Medium — John applies an OT prophecy of YHWH’s own coming directly to preparing the way for Jesus; must preserve the force that Jesus is himself the LORD who comes |
| John 1:29, 36 | Substitutionary Death (Lamb of God) | John the Baptist, Jesus | Typology: Exodus 12:1-13 (Passover lamb); Genesis 22:8 (Abraham: “God will provide for himself the lamb”); direct echo of Isaiah 53:7 (“led like a lamb to the slaughter”) | Critical — देवाचा कोकरा must be distinguished from folk animal-sacrifice to local/village deities (see 08_core_glossary.md #66); requires Passover/Isaiah 53 background note for low-OT-literacy readers |
| John 1:45 | Messianic fulfillment | Philip, Nathanael | General reference: “Moses in the Law, and also the Prophets, wrote” — summary allusion to the whole OT messianic promise (cf. Deuteronomy 18:15; Genesis 49:10; Isaiah 7:14; Micah 5:2) | High — must convey cumulative OT expectation fulfilled in one specific person, not one teacher among many possible fulfillments |
| John 1:51 | Deity/Pre-existence, Son of Man | Jesus, Nathanael | Typology: Genesis 28:12 (Jacob’s ladder — “angels of God ascending and descending”) | High — Jesus identifies himself as the true meeting-place between heaven and earth that Jacob’s vision anticipated; requires Genesis background note |
Chapter 2 — Cana, Temple Cleansing
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 2:17 | Zeal for God’s house | Jesus, disciples | Direct quotation: Psalm 69:9 “zeal for your house will consume me” | High — Psalm 69 is also quoted in Romans 11:9-10 and 15:3; the Marathi rendering of Psalm 69’s wording must remain consistent with any Romans-curriculum rendering of the same psalm (see §4 rendering-consistency rules) |
| John 2:19-21 | Resurrection typology | Jesus, Jewish leaders | Typology: the Jerusalem temple as the locus of God’s presence (1 Kings 8) reinterpreted as Christ’s own body, foreshadowing bodily resurrection | High — requires translator note distinguishing the literal मंदिर (2:14-16) from the figurative “temple of his body” (2:19-21), per 07_semantic_analysis.md note |
Chapter 3 — Core Passage (3:1-21) plus remainder (3:22-36)
(Verse-level analysis of 3:1-21 is fully covered in 07_semantic_analysis.md Part A; this table records its OT/NT cross-references specifically.)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 3:3-8 | New Birth and Regeneration | Jesus, Nicodemus | Allusion: Ezekiel 36:25-27 (“I will sprinkle clean water on you… I will put my Spirit within you”); Ezekiel 37:1-14 (dry bones given new life); Jeremiah 31:31-34 (new covenant, God’s law written on the heart) | Critical — the water/Spirit new-birth language draws directly on Ezekiel’s new-covenant promise of inward transformation, not on ritual river-bathing (tirtha) or repeated rebirth (पुनर्जन्म); a background note connecting 3:5 to Ezekiel 36 is recommended for Phase 2 lesson material |
| John 3:13-14 | Son of Man, Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Direct reference: Numbers 21:4-9 (Moses lifting up the bronze serpent in the wilderness); conceptual link: Daniel 7:13-14 (Son of Man given everlasting dominion) | Critical — the bronze-serpent typology (looking in faith at the lifted-up serpent to live) must be explained for readers with low OT narrative literacy; must not be confused with any serpent/nāga veneration motifs present in regional folk religion — the serpent here is a type of the crucified Christ, not an object of worship itself |
| John 3:16 | God’s Love for the World | God the Father | Conceptual echo: Genesis 1 (God’s love for his created world); direct doctrinal parallel: Romans 5:8 | Critical — see §4 below; this verse’s rendering must remain the fixed, memorized “thesis-statement” rendering across all Phase 2 documents, per the AI Translation Requirements’ Theological Consistency Rules |
| John 3:36 | Judgment/Belief-Unbelief, Wrath of God | John the Baptist (speaking) | Conceptual echo: Deuteronomy 30:15-19 (“I have set before you life and death… choose life”) | High — the two-destiny structure (life/wrath) echoes Deuteronomy’s covenant blessing-and-curse pattern; must not be phrased to echo karma-based fatalism |
Chapter 4 — The Samaritan Woman
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 4:5-6 | Historical/typological setting | Jesus, Samaritan woman | Reference: Genesis 33:19; 48:22 (Jacob’s well, land given to Joseph) | Medium — background note on patriarchal history required for low-OT-literacy audience |
| John 4:12 | Patriarchal lineage claim | Samaritan woman | Reference: “our father Jacob” — Samaritan claim to patriarchal inheritance (cf. Genesis 33) | Low-Medium — background/cultural note; Samaritan-Jewish schism (cf. 2 Kings 17) needed for context |
| John 4:20-24 | True Worship | Jesus, Samaritan woman | Allusion: Deuteronomy 12:5-14 (the place YHWH will choose for worship); Samaritan Gerizim vs. Jewish Jerusalem worship-place dispute | High — see 08_core_glossary.md #44 (उपासना); worship “in spirit and truth” relativizes place-bound worship, a claim requiring pastoral sensitivity given Pandharpur’s centrality to Warkari devotional identity |
Chapter 5 — Healing at Bethesda; Christ’s Authority
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 5:9-10 | Sabbath controversy | Jesus, healed man, Jewish leaders | Reference: Exodus 20:8-11 (Sabbath commandment); Exodus 31:14-15 | Medium — background note on Sabbath law required |
| John 5:18 | Deity of Christ | Jesus, Jewish leaders | Conceptual: violates strict Jewish monotheism (Deuteronomy 6:4) as popularly understood by “calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God” | Critical — see 08_core_glossary.md #45; must not be softened |
| John 5:39, 45-47 | Fulfillment of Prophecy | Jesus, Jewish leaders | Direct reference: Moses’ writings testify to Christ (Deuteronomy 18:15, “the LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me”) | High — direct messianic proof-text; requires OT background note; ties to baseline fulfillment_of_prophecy doctrine |
Chapter 6 — Bread of Life Discourse
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 6:31 | Manna typology, Eternal Life | crowd, Jesus | Direct quotation: Psalm 78:24 / allusion to Exodus 16:4,15 (“he gave them bread from heaven to eat”) | High — manna (temporary, ancestors still died) is contrasted with the true bread from heaven (permanent eternal life); requires Exodus background note |
| John 6:45 | Effectual Calling | Jesus | Direct quotation: Isaiah 54:13 “they shall all be taught by God” | High — supports ओढणे/effectual calling doctrine already High in baseline; must not be phrased to echo self-attained enlightenment |
| John 6:53-58 | Substitutionary Death (sacramental anticipation) | Jesus | Typology: Exodus 12 (Passover meal); Leviticus 17:10-14 (prohibition on eating blood, deliberately inverted/transcended by Christ’s own words) | High — see 08_core_glossary.md #49; requires explicit figurative-language translator note |
Chapter 7 — Feast of Tabernacles
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 7:22-23 | Sabbath/Law | Jesus | Reference: Leviticus 12:3 (circumcision on the eighth day, which may fall on a Sabbath) | Medium — background note; not a quotation but a rabbinic-style legal argument |
| John 7:37-39 | Holy Spirit, Eternal Life | Jesus | Allusion: Isaiah 58:11 (“you shall be like a watered garden”); Zechariah 14:8; Ezekiel 47:1-9 (river flowing from the temple) | High — “rivers of living water” explicitly glossed by John as the Spirit; requires background note on the OT temple-river imagery |
| John 7:42 | Messianic Promise, Davidic Covenant | crowd | Direct reference: Micah 5:2 (Messiah from Bethlehem); 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic descent) | High — parallels baseline davidic_covenant/seed_of_david (Romans 1:3); ironic in context (crowd unaware Jesus was in fact born in Bethlehem) |
Chapter 8 — Light of the World; “Before Abraham Was, I Am”
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 8:17 | Testimony/legal evidence | Jesus, Jewish leaders | Direct reference: Deuteronomy 19:15 (“by the testimony of two or three witnesses a charge may be established”) | Medium — legal-background note |
| John 8:35 | Sonship vs. slavery | Jesus | Allusion: Genesis 21:9-14 (Hagar and Ishmael the slave-son vs. Isaac the free heir) | High — supports Adoption doctrine (baseline, Critical); permanent son-status vs. provisional slave-status |
| John 8:39-58 | Abraham typology, Deity/Pre-existence | Jesus, Jewish leaders | Direct reference: Genesis 12-22 (Abraham narrative); direct quotation-echo of Exodus 3:14 (divine Name “I AM”) at 8:58 | Critical — the climactic ἐγώ εἰμι must echo Exodus 3:14’s Marathi rendering (“मी जो आहे तोच मी आहे”) exactly; mandatory theologian review, per 08_core_glossary.md #51 |
Chapter 9 — Healing of the Man Born Blind
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 9:2-3 | Universal Human Accountability (negatively) | disciples, Jesus | Conceptual contrast with Exodus 20:5 (generational consequence) and, more importantly, with the popular assumption Jesus explicitly rejects here — that suffering/disability directly reflects personal or ancestral sin | Critical — Jesus’s answer (“it was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed”) is doctrinally decisive against any birth-karma reading of misfortune; this passage should be a primary teaching text alongside Romans’ universal_human_accountability doctrine for Ambedkarite Buddhist-background readers, since it directly and explicitly refutes the birth-sin/karma link they rejected |
| John 9:5 | Light of the World (repeated) | Jesus | Reused from 8:12 | High, per ch.8 |
Chapter 10 — The Door and the Good Shepherd; Unity of Father and Son
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 10:1-16 | Good Shepherd, Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Typology: Ezekiel 34:1-16 (God against the false shepherds of Israel, promising to shepherd his flock himself); Psalm 23; Isaiah 40:11 | High — Christ fulfills the OT hope of God himself coming as Israel’s true shepherd (Ezekiel 34:11-16); requires background note tying 10:11 to Ezekiel 34 |
| John 10:16 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles (anticipated) | Jesus | Conceptual link to Isaiah 56:8 (“I will gather yet others to him besides those already gathered”) | High — parallels baseline unity_of_jews_and_gentiles (Romans 3:29-30; 11:17-24) |
| John 10:34 | Deity of Christ (argument from Scripture) | Jesus, Jewish leaders | Direct quotation: Psalm 82:6 (“I said, you are gods”) | High — a subtle rabbinic argument (a fortiori); must not be misread as suggesting humans generally are divine in the same sense Christ is; requires careful translator note distinguishing the psalm’s judicial “gods” (human judges addressed with derived, delegated authority) from Christ’s own unique, underived deity |
Chapter 11 — Lazarus; “I Am the Resurrection and the Life”
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 11:24-25 | Resurrection, Eternal Life | Martha, Jesus | Conceptual echo: Daniel 12:2 (“many who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life”); typology: Ezekiel 37:1-14 (dry bones raised) | Critical — Martha voices the standard Jewish hope in a future general resurrection (Daniel 12:2); Jesus’s reply identifies himself personally as the source and location of that resurrection hope, already present, not merely future |
Chapter 12 — Triumphal Entry; the Hour Has Come
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 12:13 | Messianic Promise | crowd | Direct quotation: Psalm 118:25-26 (“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD”) | High — Psalm 118 is also messianically applied elsewhere in the NT (cf. Matthew 21:9, Mark 11:9); render consistently with any parallel Matthew-curriculum rendering |
| John 12:15 | Messianic Promise (fulfilled) | Jesus | Direct quotation: Zechariah 9:9 (“Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt”) | High — a specific, falsifiable, publicly fulfilled prophecy; strong support for fulfillment_of_prophecy doctrine; requires background note |
| John 12:27 | Substitutionary Death (Christ’s anguish) | Jesus | Echo: Psalm 6:3; 42:6 (“my soul is troubled”) | Medium — supports Humanity of Christ doctrine (genuine distress) |
| John 12:38 | Judgment/Belief-Unbelief | narrator (John) | Direct quotation: Isaiah 53:1 (“Lord, who has believed our report?”) | Critical — this exact verse is ALSO quoted in Romans 10:16; the Marathi rendering MUST be identical across both curricula (see §4 rendering-consistency rules) |
| John 12:40 | Judgment (hardening) | narrator (John) | Direct quotation: Isaiah 6:9-10 (“he has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart”) | High — judicial hardening in response to persistent unbelief, a personal divine response, not impersonal karmic mechanism |
Chapter 13 — Foot Washing; New Commandment
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 13:18 | Substitutionary Death (betrayal foretold) | Jesus, Judas | Direct quotation: Psalm 41:9 (“he who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me”) | Medium-High — fulfillment-of-prophecy proof-text tied to the betrayal narrative |
| John 13:34 | Mutual love (new commandment) | Jesus | Allusion: Leviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor as yourself”) — Christ’s “new” commandment intensifies rather than replaces this OT command | Medium — must be clear the “newness” is the standard (Christ’s own self-giving love), not a rejection of the OT ethic |
Chapter 14 — The Way, the Truth, and the Life; the Counselor Promised
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 14:2-3 | Father’s house | Jesus | Conceptual echo: 2 Samuel 7:12-13 (God’s house/dynasty for David); broader temple/dwelling imagery (Exodus 25:8) | Medium — background note connecting “many rooms” to covenant-dwelling imagery |
| John 14:16-17,26 | Holy Spirit as Counselor | Jesus | Conceptual fulfillment of: Joel 2:28-29 (the Spirit poured out); Ezekiel 36:27; Isaiah 11:2 (the Spirit resting on the Messiah, extended to his people) | Critical — Counselor/सहाय्यकर्ता is the fulfillment of the OT hope of the Spirit’s indwelling presence given to all God’s people, not a new, unrelated concept |
Chapter 15 — The True Vine; Abiding
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 15:1,5 | Union with Christ (True Vine) | Jesus | Typology: Psalm 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7 (Song of the Vineyard); Jeremiah 2:21; Ezekiel 15:1-8; 19:10-14 — Israel repeatedly imaged as God’s vine/vineyard, often a failed or degenerate vine | High — Christ presents himself as the fulfillment/replacement of Israel’s vine-identity: the “true” (ἀληθινή) vine where the OT vine repeatedly failed; requires background note on the OT vine texts, especially Isaiah 5’s “wild grapes” |
| John 15:25 | Unjust hatred foretold | Jesus | Direct quotation: Psalm 35:19; 69:4 (“they hated me without a cause”) | Medium-High — Psalm 69 again; see §4 rendering-consistency note (shared with Romans 11:9-10 and John 2:17) |
Chapter 16 — The Spirit’s Convicting Work; Sorrow into Joy
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 16:21 | Sorrow turned to joy | Jesus | Allusion: Isaiah 26:17-19; 66:7-14 (childbirth imagery for eschatological reversal of sorrow) | Low-Medium — figurative, background note optional |
| John 16:32 | Substitutionary Death (disciples scattered) | Jesus | Direct allusion: Zechariah 13:7 (“strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered”) | High — same OT text underlies the Synoptic scattering prediction (cf. Matthew curriculum); render consistently if Matthew’s parallel passage is in scope |
Chapter 17 — The High Priestly Prayer
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 17:5 | Deity/Pre-existence of Christ | Jesus (praying to the Father) | Conceptual echo: Proverbs 8:22-31 (Wisdom “before the world began”); Psalm 90:2 (God “from everlasting to everlasting”) | Critical — explicit pre-existence claim (“the glory I had with you before the world existed”); mandatory theologian review |
| John 17:11,21-22 | Unity of the Father and the Son | Jesus | Conceptual tension/complement with Deuteronomy 6:4 (Shema, “the LORD is one”) — John does not contradict Jewish monotheism but reveals its inner Trinitarian complexity | Critical — see §4 and doctrine registry note; must avoid Advaitic monistic-merging misreading |
| John 17:12 | Substitutionary framework (Judas) | Jesus | Reference back to Psalm 41:9 (see 13:18) | Medium |
Chapter 18 — Betrayal, Arrest, Trial
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 18:9 | Providence/Assurance | narrator (John) | Self-referential fulfillment of Jesus’s own earlier word (John 6:39) — an intra-Johannine “prophecy and fulfillment” pattern, alongside true OT fulfillment elsewhere | Medium — note that not all “fulfillment” language in John points to the OT; some points to Jesus’s own prior words |
| John 18:28 | Passover typology | narrator | Background: Exodus 12 (Passover) — the trial occurs during Passover preparation, positioning Jesus’s death at the moment lambs were being prepared for sacrifice | High — ties directly to Lamb of God typology (1:29) and 19:36; requires background note |
| — | (otherwise reviewed) | Chapter is substantially historical/narrative (Annas, Caiaphas, Pilate, Peter’s denial); no further direct OT citations beyond the Passover-timing background above; explicitly reviewed per full-coverage mandate | Low, background/narrative only |
Chapter 19 — Crucifixion
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 19:24 | Substitutionary Death (fulfillment) | Roman soldiers | Direct quotation: Psalm 22:18 (“they divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots”) | High — Psalm 22 is the single most extensively fulfilled psalm in the crucifixion narrative; requires background note tying together all Psalm 22 allusions (v.1 “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me,” echoed in the Synoptic accounts, and v.18 here) |
| John 19:28 | Substitutionary Death (fulfillment) | Jesus | Allusion: Psalm 22:15; 69:21 (“I thirst”) | High — same psalm cluster as above |
| John 19:36 | Passover/Lamb typology (fulfillment) | narrator | Direct quotation/typology: Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12 (“not one of his bones shall be broken” — Passover lamb regulation); echoed also in Psalm 34:20 | Critical — direct, explicit typological fulfillment identifying Jesus as the true Passover Lamb (cf. 1:29); central Substitutionary Death proof-text |
| John 19:37 | Substitutionary Death (fulfillment) | narrator | Direct quotation: Zechariah 12:10 (“they will look on him whom they have pierced”) | Critical — same verse underlies Revelation 1:7; must be rendered with care to preserve future recognition/mourning-repentance sense |
Chapter 20 — Resurrection Appearances; Thomas’s Confession; Purpose Statement
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 20:9 | Resurrection of Christ | Peter, the beloved disciple | Conceptual echo: Psalm 16:10 (“you will not… let your holy one see corruption”) — the OT resurrection-hope text most directly applied elsewhere in the NT (Acts 2:25-31) to Christ’s resurrection | Critical — even though John does not quote Psalm 16 directly, the disciples’ dawning realization “that he must rise from the dead” is the Gospel’s climactic fulfillment of this OT hope |
| John 20:22 | New Birth/Holy Spirit, New Creation | Jesus, disciples | Typology: Genesis 2:7 (“he breathed into his nostrils the breath of life”) | High — Jesus’s breathing on the disciples deliberately echoes the original creation, presenting the giving of the Spirit as an act of new creation; requires background note |
| John 20:28 | Deity of Christ | Thomas | Conceptual climax of the whole Gospel’s Deity-of-Christ trajectory; echoes OT divine-address formulas (e.g., Psalm 35:23 “my God and my Lord”) | Critical — see 08_core_glossary.md #64; mandatory theologian review |
Chapter 21 — Epilogue: Restoration of Peter
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 21:15-17 | Restoration, Shepherd imagery (reprise) | Jesus, Peter | Typology reprise of Ezekiel 34 and John 10 (Good Shepherd) extended pastorally to Peter’s own future ministry | Medium — reuse of established shepherd vocabulary; no new OT citation |
| — | (otherwise reviewed) | Remainder of the chapter (miraculous catch of fish, the “beloved disciple” note, closing colophon) contains no direct OT quotation; explicitly reviewed and noted per full-coverage mandate | Low |
2. Messianic References — Consolidated Table
| OT Text | Messianic Content | John Fulfillment/Reference | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genesis 3:15 | The “seed” who will crush the serpent’s head | Conceptually undergirds 3:14’s serpent-lifted-up typology and 12:31’s “ruler of this world… cast out” | High — protoevangelium background, requires explanatory note |
| Genesis 22:8 | ”God will provide for himself the lamb” | John 1:29,36 (Lamb of God) | Critical, see ch.1 table |
| 2 Samuel 7:12-16 | Davidic covenant, an eternal throne | John 7:42; conceptually behind 1:49 “King of Israel” | High — parallels baseline davidic_covenant |
| Psalm 2:7 | ”You are my Son; today I have begotten you” | Conceptually behind Sonship-of-Christ declarations throughout (1:34,49; 3:16-18; 5:18-26) | Critical — do not conflate with adoptive sonship |
| Psalm 22 | The suffering, mocked, pierced sufferer | John 19:24,28 | Critical, see ch.19 table |
| Psalm 41:9 | Betrayal by a close companion | John 13:18; 17:12 | Medium-High |
| Psalm 69 | The zealous, hated sufferer | John 2:17; 15:25; (cf. Romans 11:9-10; 15:3) | High — cross-curriculum rendering consistency required, see §4 |
| Psalm 82:6 | ”I said, you are gods” | John 10:34 | High — careful handling required, see ch.10 table |
| Psalm 118:25-26 | ”Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD” | John 12:13 | High |
| Isaiah 6:9-10 | Hardening of hearts | John 12:40 | High |
| Isaiah 7:14; 9:6-7 | Immanuel, “Mighty God,” everlasting throne | Background to Deity of Christ doctrine broadly; not directly quoted in John but foundational to messianic_promise (baseline) | Critical — background reference for lesson material |
| Isaiah 40:3 | Voice crying in the wilderness | John 1:23 | Medium |
| Isaiah 53 | The Suffering Servant, “led like a lamb,” pierced for transgressions | John 1:29 (typology); 12:38 (direct quotation of 53:1) | Critical — 53:1 shared verbatim with Romans 10:16, see §4 |
| Isaiah 54:13 | ”They shall all be taught by God” | John 6:45 | High |
| Micah 5:2 | Ruler from Bethlehem | John 7:42 | High |
| Zechariah 9:9 | King coming on a donkey | John 12:15 | Critical (public, falsifiable, fulfilled prophecy) |
| Zechariah 12:10 | ”They will look on him whom they have pierced” | John 19:37 | Critical |
| Zechariah 13:7 | Shepherd struck, sheep scattered | John 16:32 | High |
| Daniel 7:13-14 | One like a Son of Man given everlasting dominion | John 1:51; 3:13-14; 5:27; 12:23,34 | Critical/High — see 08_core_glossary.md #32 |
| Daniel 12:2 | Resurrection to everlasting life | John 11:24-25; conceptually behind 5:28-29 | Critical |
| Deuteronomy 18:15 | A prophet like Moses | John 5:45-47; 1:45 | High |
3. Typological Patterns Across John
| Type (OT) | Antitype (John) | Passages | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passover Lamb (Exodus 12) | Christ, the Lamb of God, dies at Passover, bones unbroken | 1:29,36; 18:28; 19:14,36 | Critical — never assimilate to local/folk animal-sacrifice practice; unique, unrepeatable |
| Bronze Serpent (Numbers 21:4-9) | Christ lifted up on the cross, giving life to those who look/believe | 3:14-15; 12:32-34 | Critical — double meaning (shame/glory) must be preserved; not a serpent-veneration motif |

4. Cross-Curriculum Parallels — John ↔ Romans
The Romans Language Package is the language authority for this project; the following table records every substantive doctrinal and textual overlap between John and Romans so that Phase 2 rendering remains fully consistent across both curricula.
| John Passage | Romans Parallel | Shared Doctrine | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| John 3:16-19 | Romans 5:8; 8:32 | God’s Love for the World; Substitutionary Death | Render प्रीती (agapē) identically in both; both texts describe God’s initiating, self-giving love toward sinners, never devotee-to-deity ascending bhakti |
| John 3:3-8; 1:12-13 | Romans 6:4; 8:9-16 | New Birth / Regeneration by the Spirit; Adoption | नव्याने जन्मणे and दत्तक पुत्रत्व describe two complementary facets of the same salvation event (new life + new legal status); teaching material should present them together, never confused as identical |
| John 20:28 | Romans 10:9 (“Jesus is Lord”) | Deity/Lordship of Christ | Both are the Gospel’s/Epistle’s respective climactic confession texts; प्रभू and देव/परमेश्वर must retain full unqualified force in both; render Romans 10:9’s “येशू प्रभू आहे” and John 20:28’s “माझा प्रभू आणि माझा देव” as fixed, non-variable confessional formulas |
| John 1:1,14 | Romans 1:3-4; 9:5 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ / Incarnation | Both affirm Christ’s full deity and real humanity together; शब्द (John) and देहधारण (Romans/John shared) must be taught as two aspects of one doctrine, not treated as separate topics |
| John 11:25; 5:24-29 | Romans 6:4-5; 8:11 | Resurrection of Christ / Believers’ Resurrection | पुनरुत्थान must be used identically; both curricula ground the believer’s future bodily resurrection in Christ’s own accomplished resurrection |
| John 14:16-17,26; 16:7-15 | Romans 8:9-16, 26-27 | Holy Spirit’s Person and Work | सहाय्यकर्ता (Counselor, new to John) and the baseline’s पवित्र आत्मा together describe the same divine Person; Romans’ adoption/Abba-cry (8:15) and John’s Counselor-indwelling (14:17) should be cross-taught as complementary |
| John 8:39-58 | Romans 4:1-25 | Abraham, Faith, Promise | Both curricula treat Abraham as the paradigm of true faith-based sonship versus mere physical descent; Genesis 15:6 (Romans 4:3) and John 8:56 (“Abraham rejoiced to see my day”) should be taught together as showing Abraham’s faith was itself directed toward Christ |
| John 10:16 | Romans 3:29-30; 11:17-24 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles | ”One flock, one shepherd” and the olive-tree/no-distinction language must be taught with the same unqualified universality; do not soften either text |
| John 9:1-3 | Romans 2:6-11; 3:23 (baseline universal_human_accountability) | Universal Human Accountability (negatively stated) | John 9:2-3’s explicit rejection of the sin-causes-suffering link, and Romans’ insistence that all stand equally guilty regardless of status, are mutually reinforcing texts against caste-karma misreadings; recommend cross-referencing both in lesson material for Ambedkarite Buddhist-background readers |
| John 12:38 | Romans 10:16 | Fulfillment of Prophecy (Isaiah 53:1) | Verbatim shared OT quotation. The Marathi rendering of Isaiah 53:1 (“प्रभू, आमच्या संदेशावर कोणी विश्वास ठेवला?” or the established Marathi Bible Union Version wording) MUST be identical in both John 12:38 and Romans 10:16 lesson material. This is the single most important shared-quotation consistency requirement in this analysis. |
| John 2:17; 15:25 | Romans 11:9-10; 15:3 | Psalm 69 (zeal, unjust hatred) | Different verses of the same psalm are quoted in each curriculum; while exact wording differs by verse, the psalm’s title/reference format (स्तोत्रसंहिता 69) and any recurring phrases must be rendered consistently in style and register across both curricula |
| John 3:36; 12:37-40 | Romans 1:18; 9:14-24; 11:7-10 | Judgment / Divine Wrath / Hardening | देवाचा क्रोध and Romans’ teaching on God’s wrath against unrighteousness must be taught as the same personal, righteous divine response — never impersonal karmic retribution — across both curricula |
| John 14:6 | Romans 3:21-26 (righteousness apart from the law, through faith) | Exclusivity of Salvation through Christ | Both texts ground salvation exclusively in Christ, without supplementary paths (works of law in Romans; other “ways” in John); the exclusivity clause in John 14:6 should not be softened, echoing the same firmness required for Romans’ law/grace argument |
5. Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations
- Isaiah 53:1 (quoted in John 12:38 and Romans 10:16): identical Marathi wording required in both curricula’s lesson text. This must be locked in translation memory as a single shared quotation entry before Phase 2 begins.
- Psalm 69 (John 2:17, 15:25; Romans 11:9-10, 15:3): different verses, but consistent register, consistent Marathi Psalter citation style (स्तोत्रसंहिता 69:9, स्तोत्रसंहिता 69:4, etc.), and consistent theological framing (the righteous sufferer’s zeal and undeserved hatred, fulfilled in Christ).
- Genesis 15:6 / Abraham’s faith (Romans 4:3, conceptually behind John 8:56): teaching material referencing Abraham’s faith in both curricula should use the same descriptive vocabulary (विश्वास ठेवला, आरोपित नीतिमत्त्व) so that a learner moving between the Romans and John curricula recognizes the same paradigm.
- Zechariah 12:10 (John 19:37; also foundational to Revelation 1:7, outside current scope but worth flagging for any future Revelation curriculum): render with future applicability in mind — “ते ज्याला त्यांनी भोसकले त्याच्याकडे पाहतील” — consistent phrasing should be locked now to avoid rework later.
- Any future OT quotation appearing in both a John lesson and a Romans lesson not yet identified above must be checked against the Romans translation memory before a new Marathi rendering is created, per the baseline’s Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions (§ “Glossary Enforcement Priority Order”).
- Citation format: all cross-references in Phase 2 output must use the Marathi book-name conventions in §0.1 above, verse numbers in Arabic numerals, matching the baseline’s Cross-Reference Preservation Rules exactly (e.g., “स्तोत्रसंहिता 22:18” not “स्तोत्रसंहिता २२:१८”).
6. Summary Notes for Phase 2
- John contains substantially denser OT typological material than Romans (bronze serpent, manna, vine, shepherd, Passover lamb, tabernacle) — Phase 2 lesson writers should budget for more OT background notes per chapter than the Romans curriculum required.
- Three quotations/typologies are flagged Critical AND cross-curriculum-locked: Isaiah 53:1 (John 12:38 / Romans 10:16), the Passover Lamb typology (John 1:29; 19:36), and the bronze-serpent typology (John 3:14) tied to the core passage. 2b. John 9:1-3 is recommended as a primary supplementary teaching text alongside Romans’ universal-accountability passages specifically for Ambedkarite Buddhist-background learners, since it is the Gospel’s most explicit rejection of the sin-causes-suffering/birth-karma link.
- The Seven “I Am” statements (cross-referenced fully in
08_core_glossary.md§C) each carry an implicit OT echo of Exodus 3:14’s divine Name; this should be taught as a unifying structural feature of the whole Gospel, not seven unrelated metaphors. - This document must be merged with
07_semantic_analysis.mdand08_core_glossary.mdbefore Phase 2 segment translation begins, and all new terms/quotations identified here that are not yet intranslation_memory.jsonmust be added and version-incremented per the baseline’s enforcement workflow.
