Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — Jude (Full Book) for Marathi Translation

Scope and Method

Jude is a single-chapter, 25-verse epistle. Per the PRD Phase 1 mandate, this analysis covers the entire book, verse by verse for the core passage (Jude 1:3–23), and then a chapter-by-chapter study of the whole book — which for Jude means the remaining verses (1:1–2 salutation and 1:24–25 doxology) not already treated in the core-passage section, explicitly confirming full-book coverage.

All terms already established in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are reused exactly as recorded there (e.g., grace = कृपा, faith = विश्वास, saints = पवित्र जन, Lord = प्रभू, glory = गौरव, Holy Spirit = पवित्र आत्मा, God = परमेश्वर, apostle = प्रेषित). New terms required by Jude’s distinctive vocabulary are proposed here with the same field structure as the baseline, for incorporation into the Phase 1 Step 2 registries.

Greek text follows the standard critical (NA28/UBS5) text tradition.

PART 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse Analysis: Jude 1:3–23

Jude 1:3

OriginalTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMarathi rendering & risk
ἈγαπητοίAgapētoi”Beloved ones”Term of pastoral affection among believers; vocative address”beloved,” “dear friends”Jude addresses the recipients as objects of covenant love before rebuking false teachers — pastoral tone frames the whole letterप्रिय जनहो (priya janhō). Low risk; standard address term.
κοινῆς σωτηρίαςkoinēs sōtērias”common/shared salvation”Salvation held in common by all believers regardless of status”common salvation,” “salvation we share”Reuse TM: σωτηρία = तारण. “Common” stresses no caste/class distinction in who shares this salvation — echoes baseline’s “universal_scope_of_gospel” sensitivityसामाईक तारण (sāmāik tāraṇ). Medium risk; तारण is Critical per baseline (never मोक्ष/मुक्ती/निर्वाण) — reuse exactly, add सामाईक for “common.”
ἐπαγωνίζεσθαιepagōnizesthai”to contend/struggle for, agonize over”Athletic/military metaphor — to fight earnestly, as in a wrestling contest, for something under threat”contend for,” “fight earnestly for,” “struggle for”This is the doctrinal center of the letter’s opening: believers must actively, effortfully defend the faith against corruption — not passive custodianshipझगडणे / झुंजून लढणे (jhagaḍaṇe / jhuñjūn laḍhaṇe). Critical risk. Must convey vigorous, costly struggle, not casual assent. Avoid terms that sound like ritual defense of a a caste-linked religious identity.
ἅπαξhapax”once, once for all”Denotes a singular, unrepeatable, completed act”once for all,” “once and for all time”Critical theological claim: the faith is a fixed, finished deposit, not an evolving or repeatable revelation. Directly parallels baseline’s “fulfillment_of_prophecy” concern about cyclical time (Hindu yuga cycles; Buddhist dependent-origination wheel)एकदाच व सर्वकाळासाठी (ekdāc va sarvakāḷāsāṭhī). Critical risk. Must not be softened to “once (among many times)”; must exclude any sense of an ongoing, reinterpretable teaching lineage (cf. guru-parampara transmission, or Ambedkar’s reinterpreted Dhamma).
παραδοθείσῃparadotheisē”having been delivered/handed down/entrusted”From παραδίδωμι — to hand over a fixed deposit, as in a tradition passed intact”delivered,” “entrusted,” “handed down”The faith is a received, complete deposit from God via the apostles, not a human-originated teaching tradition open to reinterpretationसोपवलेला (विश्वास) (sopavlelā (viśvās)). Critical risk. Ties to baseline’s “inspiration_of_scripture” doctrine; must not read like a human guru-to-disciple oral transmission (parampara) or a socially reinterpreted ethical teaching (cf. Ambedkarite reworking of “Dhamma”).
τοῖς ἁγίοιςtois hagiois”to the saints/holy ones”Corporate designation of all believers as set apart”the saints,” “God’s holy people”Reuse TM exactly: पवित्र जन. Never संत (Warkari poet-saints). Reused from baseline — High risk per baseline notes.
πίστειpistei”faith” (dative, object of ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι)Body of belief entrusted to the church; here approaching a “the faith” (fides quae) sense rather than only personal trust”the faith,” “the faith once delivered”Distinct nuance from Romans’ more common “personal trust” sense — here πίστις denotes the content of belief/doctrine, not only the act of believingReuse TM: विश्वास. High risk (per baseline) — but flag that in Jude 1:3 the sense shifts toward “the body of revealed truth,” not merely subjective trust; translator note recommended distinguishing “the faith” (content) from “faith” (trust) in context.

Jude 1:4

OriginalTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMarathi rendering & risk
παρεισέδυσανpareisedysan”slipped in secretly / crept in unnoticed”Compound of παρά + εἰς + δύνω — to enter alongside, stealthily, unnoticed”crept in unnoticed,” “secretly slipped in,” “infiltrated”Describes false teachers’ covert infiltration of the community — not open, honest dissent but deceptive entryगुप्तपणे शिरलेले (guptapaṇe śirlele). High risk. Must convey covert, deceptive entry, distinguishing these figures from open, legitimate theological disagreement.
προγεγραμμένοιprogegrammenoi”marked out/written down beforehand”Foreordained record — a legal/prophetic image of a verdict already recorded”marked out beforehand,” “designated long ago,” “written about beforehand”Touches predestination-adjacent language similar to baseline’s “election”/“providence” Critical-risk concerns — here applied to condemnation, not salvationआधीच नेमलेले / पूर्वीच लिहून ठेवलेले (ādhīc nemlele). High risk. Must not be phrased to echo karma-birth fatalism (cf. baseline’s caution on “election” and “providence” against caste-karma framing); this is God’s just foreknowledge of specific persons’ guilt, not an impersonal cosmic ledger.
κρίμαkrima”verdict, sentence, condemnation”The result/decision of a judgment, often negative (condemnation)“condemnation,” “judgment,” “sentence”The specific sentence these false teachers are destined for — distinct from κρίσις (the process/day of judgment, vv.6,9,15)दंडाज्ञा (daṇḍājñā). Medium-High risk. Distinguish from κρίσις (न्यायनिवाडा) below; avoid terms suggesting impersonal legalism.
ἀσεβεῖςasebeis”ungodly ones”Those who show active irreverence/impiety toward God — the opposite of εὐσέβεια (godly reverence)“ungodly,” “impious,” “irreligious”The letter’s central diagnostic term for the false teachers — reappears intensively in v.15 (4x) and v.18भक्तिहीन (bhaktihīn). Critical risk. This is the letter’s keyword for judgment. Rendering with a bhakti-root word (भक्ति) risks being heard as “lacking Warkari-style devotional observance” rather than “in active rebellion against the true God’s authority.” A strong translator note distinguishing this from Warkari bhakti-piety is mandatory at every occurrence.
χάριταcharita”grace” (accusative)See baseline: unmerited divine favor”grace”Reuse TM: कृपा. These false teachers pervert grace into license — the very corruption the baseline flags Critical for कृपाकृपा. Reused from baseline — Critical risk; here the risk is compounded because the passage shows grace being weaponized to justify sin, requiring an explicit contrast in teaching materials.
ἀσέλγειανaselgeian”sensuality, licentiousness, unrestrained indulgence”Shameless, unrestrained moral/sexual license”sensuality,” “licentiousness,” “debauchery”The direct opposite outcome of true grace — grace turned into a license for unrestrained immoralityस्वैराचार (svairācār). High risk. Must convey moral abandon/license, not mere “freedom”; needs to be clearly linked to grace’s abuse, not grace itself.
δεσπότηνdespotēn”Master, absolute owner-sovereign”Denotes ownership and absolute authority, distinct from κύριος’s governing lordship; in NT usage usually of God the Father, rarely of Christ”Master,” “Sovereign Lord,” “Owner”Applied here to Christ alongside κύριος in a single-article (Granville Sharp) construction — a strong, easily-missed claim of Christ’s full deity and absolute ownership of believersस्वामी (svāmī). Critical risk. Baseline rejected स्वामी as an alternative for कुरिος/प्रभू; here it must be retained as the deliberately distinct second title for the same Greek construction (δεσπότης + κύριος, both referring to Christ) — translator note required to preserve the double-title Christological force and to distinguish from guru/spiritual-master (स्वामी) associations in Hindu ascetic traditions.
κύριονkyrion”Lord”See baseline”Lord”Reuse TM: प्रभू. Paired here with δεσπότην for Christ. Reused — Critical, per baseline.
ἀρνούμενοιarnoumenoi”denying, disowning”Active rejection/renunciation of allegiance”denying,” “disowning,” “renouncing”False teachers deny Christ’s Lordship in practice through their conduct, even while claiming church membershipनाकारणे (nākāraṇe). Low-Medium risk; standard term.

Jude 1:5

OriginalTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMarathi rendering & risk
Ὑπομνῆσαι…βούλομαιHypomnēsai…boulomai”I want/intend to remind”Deliberate act of recalling settled truth”I want to remind you,” “I desire to remind you”Jude appeals to shared, already-known salvation history — not new revelation but remembered truthआठवण करून देऊ इच्छितो (āṭhavaṇ karūn deū icchitō). Low risk.
σώσαςsōsas”having saved” (aorist participle)See σωτηρία root”having saved,” “who saved”Reuse TM root: तारण/तारणे. First OT type: Israel saved from Egyptतारले (tārle — verb form of तारण). Reused root — Critical per baseline.
τοὺς μὴ πιστεύσανταςtous mē pisteusantas”those who did not believe”Unbelief as the specific cause of destruction, not merely disobedience in the abstract”those who did not believe,” “the unbelieving”Reuse TM root: πίστις/विश्वास (negated) — establishes that saved-then-destroyed hinges on faith, the letter’s opening themeविश्वास न ठेवणारे (viśvās na ṭhevaṇāre). High risk per baseline (faith term), reused.
ἀπώλεσενapōlesen”destroyed”Complete ruin/destruction, often eschatological”destroyed,” “brought to destruction”First of three OT judgment types (Israel, angels, Sodom) establishing the doctrine “OT Warnings as Types”नाश केला (nāś kelā). Medium risk; must convey decisive, not merely disciplinary, destruction.

Jude 1:6

OriginalTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMarathi rendering & risk
ἀγγέλουςangelous”angels”Heavenly created beings”angels”Second OT-adjacent type: fallen angelsदेवदूत (devadūt). Low risk; established Marathi Christian term.
τηρήσαντας…τετήρηκενtērēsantas…tetērēken”having kept…has kept” (same root τηρέω, used twice, once negated)To guard, keep watch over, maintain in a position; God’s “keeping” of the fallen angels ironically mirrors their failure to “keep” their own position”kept,” “guarded,” “maintained”Central wordplay of the whole letter: the very verb (τηρέω) used for believers being “kept” for Christ (v.1) and urged to “keep” themselves (v.21) is here used of angels who failed to keep their place and are now themselves “kept” in chains for judgment — the doctrine “Kept by God and Presented Blameless” pivots on this termराखणे / जपणे (rākhaṇe / japaṇe). High risk — key thematic term. Must render consistently enough across the letter that the ironic wordplay (kept vs. failing to keep) remains visible to the Marathi reader; a translator note is recommended at each occurrence.
ἀρχήνarchēn”domain, position of rule, first estate”Original rank/sphere of authority given by God”position of authority,” “domain,” “own position”The angels’ sin was abandoning their God-given rankस्वतःचे स्थान/अधिकार (svataḥce sthān/adhikār). Medium risk.
οἰκητήριονoikētērion”dwelling place, habitation”Proper abode assigned by God”proper dwelling,” “own home/domain”Angels left their proper heavenly sphereस्वतःचे राहण्याचे ठिकाण (svataḥce rāhaṇyāce ṭhikāṇ). Low risk.
κρίσινkrisin”judgment” (the day/process)The eschatological day of judgment as event/process, distinct from κρίμα (verdict) in v.4”judgment,” “the judgment,” “day of judgment”Second occurrence of the judgment word-cluster central to the doctrine “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers”न्यायनिवाडा (nyāyanivāḍā). Medium-High risk. Note possible incidental resonance with the Nyāya school of Hindu logical philosophy — clarify in translator notes that this is God’s personal moral judgment, not an impersonal logical/cosmic system.
δεσμοῖς ἀϊδίοιςdesmois aïdiois”eternal bonds/chains”Permanent binding restraint”eternal chains,” “everlasting bonds”Conveys the permanence and finality of angelic judgmentचिरंतन बंधने (cirantan bandhane). Low risk.
ζόφονzophon”gloom, thick darkness”Deep, oppressive darkness, often of the underworld/place of judgment”darkness,” “gloom,” “nether gloom”Recurs in v.13 for the false teachers’ destiny — links their fate to the fallen angels’गडद अंधकार (gaḍad andhakār). Medium risk; ensure distinct from meditative/contemplative “darkness” imagery in some devotional traditions.

Jude 1:7

OriginalTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMarathi rendering & risk
ἐκπορνεύσασαιekporneusasai”having indulged in sexual immorality” (intensive form)Intensified compound of πορνεύω — thorough, flagrant sexual immorality”gave themselves over to sexual immorality,” “indulged in gross immorality”Third OT type: Sodom and Gomorrahअनैतिक व्यभिचारात बुडलेले (anaitik vyabhicārāt buḍlele). High risk. Must convey flagrant, willful immorality without veering into language that could be read as ethnic/communal insult of Sodom’s residents merely as “foreigners.”
σαρκὸς ἑτέραςsarkos heteras”strange/other flesh”Unnatural sexual pursuit, going after flesh outside the created order”strange flesh,” “unnatural desire”Describes the specific perversion at Sodomपरक्या देहाच्या मागे (parakyā dehācyā māge). High risk. Requires careful, non-graphic pastoral phrasing suited to the reading-level target audience.
δεῖγμαdeigma”example, sample, specimen”A visible, standing example set forth for others to see”example,” “warning example”Sodom stands as a perpetual, visible warningदाखला / उदाहरण (dākhalā / udāharaṇ). Low risk.
πυρὸς αἰωνίουpyros aiōniou”eternal fire”Unending punitive fire, a fixed divine judgment”eternal fire,” “everlasting fire”The historical judgment on Sodom prefigures eternal judgmentसार्वकालिक अग्नी (sārvakālik agnī). High risk. For readers formed by Navayana Buddhist teaching, “fire” (agni) already carries a rich technical association — the “three fires” of greed, hatred, and delusion that the Buddhist path aims to extinguish (nibbāna = “blowing out”). This “eternal fire” must be clearly taught as God’s righteous punitive judgment on persons, not an inner psychological state to be extinguished by self-effort; a translator/teaching note distinguishing the two is required.
δίκηνdikēn”penalty, punishment, justice”Legal/judicial punishment exacted”punishment,” “penalty”Reinforces the judicial, not karmic, nature of the punishmentशिक्षा (śikṣā). Medium risk; avoid terms suggesting impersonal karmic retribution.

Jude 1:8

μιαίνουσινmiainousin”defile”Moral/ritual defilement”defile,” “pollute”Bodily/moral defilement through sinअशुद्ध करतात (aśuddh kartāt). Medium risk; keep moral (not ritual-purity) sense primary.
κυριότηταkyriotēta”lordship, authority, dominion”Abstract noun from κύριος — either Christ’s lordship or angelic authorities”authority,” “lordship,” “dominion”These teachers reject legitimate governing authority (divine or angelic)अधिकार/प्रभुत्व (adhikār/prabhutva). Medium risk; relates to baseline’s “lordship_of_christ” doctrine.
ἀθετοῦσινathetousin”reject, set aside, treat as invalid”Formal repudiation”reject,” “despise,” “set aside”Active rejection of authorityनाकारतात (nākārtāt). Low risk.
δόξαςdoxas”glorious ones” (i.e., angelic/majestic beings)Plural of δόξα used concretely for glorious/majestic beings, likely angelic powers”glorious ones,” “celestial beings,” “angelic majesties”Reuse TM root: गौरव (here used concretely, not abstractly)गौरवी प्राणी / गौरवशाली (देवदूत) — gauravī prāṇī. Medium-High risk; needs a translator note that this is a concrete plural (“glorious beings”) distinct from the abstract “glory” (गौरव) used elsewhere of God.
βλασφημοῦσινblasphēmousin”blaspheme, slander, revile”Contemptuous, insulting speech against a superior/sacred being”blaspheme,” “slander,” “speak evil of”These teachers arrogantly revile beings even angels dare not revile (cf. v.9)निंदा करतात (nindā kartāt). Medium risk.

Jude 1:9

ἀρχάγγελοςarchangelos”archangel, chief angel”Highest rank of angelic being named in Scripture (Michael)“archangel”Establishes contrast: even the highest angel showed restraint the false teachers lackमुख्य देवदूत (mukhya devadūt). Medium risk; should be used consistently wherever “archangel” recurs across future NT curricula (1 Thess 4:16).
διαβόλῳdiabolō”the devil, the slanderer”Personal, malevolent spiritual adversary”the devil,” “Satan”Personal evil being disputing over Moses’ bodyसैतान (saitān). Low-Medium risk; well-established loanword in Marathi Christian usage.
διακρινόμενος διελέγετοdiakrinomenos dielegeto”disputing, arguing/reasoning”Formal dispute/contention”disputed,” “argued,” “contended”Describes a specific, formal angelic dispute (extra-biblical tradition referenced)वाद घातला (vād ghātlā). Low risk.
οὐκ ἐτόλμησενouk etolmēsen”did not dare”Restraint from presumption”did not dare,” “did not presume”Michael’s restraint models the humility the false teachers utterly lackधाडस केले नाही (dhāḍas kele nāhī). Low risk.

Medium risk; ties to न्यायनिवाडा (κρίσις) and निंदा (βλασφημία) established above.
ἐπιτιμήσαι σοι κύριοςepitimēsai soi kyrios”may the Lord rebuke you”Formal, deferential rebuke, deferring judgment to God”The Lord rebuke you”Michael defers all judgment to God’s own authority — models proper humility before spiritual authoritiesप्रभू तुला दटावो (prabhū tulā daṭāvo). Low-Medium risk; reuses प्रभू (TM).

Jude 1:10

Low-Medium risk; standard idiom, natural in Marathi.
φθείρονταιphtheirontai”are destroyed/corrupted”Moral ruin/decay”are destroyed,” “are corrupted,” “destroy themselves”Following mere instinct leads to their own ruinनाश पावतात (nāś pāvtāt). Medium risk; consistent with ἀπόλλυμι family used elsewhere.

ὁδῷ τοῦ Κάϊνhodō tou Kain”the way of Cain”Path/manner of life exemplified by Cain (murderous jealousy, false worship)“the way of Cain”First of three OT figures typifying the false teachers’ sin — needs OT background (low OT literacy audience)काईनचा मार्ग (Kāīncā mārg). Medium risk; requires brief OT background note (Genesis 4) for readers with low OT narrative literacy.
πλάνῃ τοῦ Βαλαάμplanē tou Balaam”the error of Balaam”Deception/wandering from truth, specifically for profit”the error of Balaam,” “Balaam’s error”Balaam sold prophetic gift for wages — models greed-driven false teachingबलामची चूक/भ्रांती (Balāmcī cūk/bhrāntī). Medium risk; requires OT background note (Numbers 22–24).

Low risk; established OT proper-name form; brief background note recommended (Genesis 5:18-24).
ἁγίαις μυριάσινhagiais myriasin”holy myriads/ten thousands”Vast angelic host accompanying God’s coming in judgment (echoes Deut 33:2; Zech 14:5)“holy myriads,” “ten thousands of his holy ones”These are holy angels, not redeemed human “saints” — must be disambiguated from πवित्र जन (believers)पवित्र दूतांचे असंख्य समुदाय (pavitra dūtāṇce asaṅkhya samudāy). High risk. Do NOT render with पवित्र जन (reserved for believer-saints per baseline); use a phrase that clearly names angelic hosts to avoid doctrinal confusion.
κρίσινkrisin”judgment”See v.6”judgment”Reuse established renderingन्यायनिवाडा. Reused — Medium-High risk (established above).
ἐλέγξαιelenxai”to convict, expose, rebuke with proof”Formal, evidence-based conviction of guilt”convict,” “expose,” “rebuke”God’s judgment includes public exposure of specific deeds, not vague condemnationदोषी ठरवणे (doṣī ṭharavaṇe). Low-Medium risk.
ἀσεβεῖς / ἀσεβείας / ἠσέβησανasebeis / asebeias / ēsebēsan”ungodly / ungodliness / acted ungodly”Same root ἀσεβ- occurring four times in this single verse”ungodly…ungodly deeds…committed in an ungodly way…ungodly”The letter’s key term reaches maximum concentration here — the theological climax of “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers.” Critical risk, reused from v.4 entry — the translator must sustain the same root consistently across all four occurrences in this verse to preserve Jude’s rhetorical emphasis.
σκληρῶνsklērōn”harsh things”Insolent, defiant, hard-edged speech”harsh things,” “harsh words”The content of the false teachers’ defiant speech against Godकठोर गोष्टी (kaṭhor goṣṭī). Low risk.
ἁμαρτωλοὶhamartōloi”sinners”Reuse TM root: पाप → पापी”sinners”Standard term for those characterized by sinपापी (pāpī). Reused root — High risk per baseline notes on caste-karma sensitivity around “sin.”

Jude 1:16

γογγυσταίgongystai”grumblers”Habitual, discontented complaint (echoes Israel’s wilderness grumbling)“grumblers,” “murmurers”Recalls Israel’s wilderness rebellion pattern, tying back to v.5कुरकुर करणारे (kurkur karṇāre). Low-Medium risk.
μεμψίμοιροιmempsimoiroi”fault-finders, malcontents”Chronic dissatisfaction with one’s own lot/circumstances”fault-finders,” “malcontents,” “complainers about their lot”Deep-seated discontent with God’s providential ordering of their circumstancesनेहमी असंतुष्ट राहणारे (nehmī asantuṣṭa rāhṇāre). Medium risk. Care needed: must not be phrased in a way that sounds like complaint against one’s “fate/lot” (कर्मफळ/नशीब), given baseline’s caution on karma-adjacent language for providence.
ἐπιθυμίαςepithymias”desires, lusts”Strong, often illicit, craving/appetite”desires,” “lusts,” “passions”Life governed by self-indulgent craving rather than obedience to Godवासना (vāsanā). High risk. For readers formed by Navayana Buddhist teaching, “craving” (taṇhā) is the central diagnosed cause of all suffering per the Four Noble Truths, addressed through self-cultivation on the Eightfold Path. This term must be taught as moral rebellion against a personal God, not as the impersonal metaphysical root-cause addressed by Buddhist self-effort; a clarifying teaching note is required at every occurrence.
ὑπέρογκαhyperogka”bombastic, swelling, bloated words”Grandiose, arrogant speech greater than the substance behind it”great swelling words,” “bombastic boasts”Empty, self-aggrandizing rhetoricगर्विष्ठ बडबड (garviṣṭha baḍbaḍ). Low-Medium risk.
θαυμάζοντες πρόσωπαthaumazontes prosōpa”marveling at faces” (idiom: showing partiality/flattery)Hebraic idiom for partiality/favoritism for personal advantage”flattering people,” “showing favoritism”Manipulative flattery for personal financial gainपक्षपाताने खोटी स्तुती करणे (pakṣapātāne khoṭī stutī karaṇe). Low-Medium risk.
ὠφελείας χάρινōpheleias charin”for the sake of advantage/profit”Self-interested material motive”for the sake of gain,” “for profit”Greed as the false teachers’ driving motive, echoing Balaam (v.11)फायद्यासाठी (phāydyāsāṭhī). Low risk.

Jude 1:17–19

ἀποστόλωνapostolōn”apostles”Reuse TM exactly: प्रेषित”apostles”Grounds the warning in authoritative apostolic prediction, not private opinionप्रेषित (preṣit). Reused exactly — Medium risk per baseline.
ἐπ᾿ ἐσχάτου χρόνουep’ eschatou chronou”in the last time”Eschatological “last days” period, inaugurated by Christ’s first coming”in the last time,” “in the last days”Linear, historical eschatology — not a repeating cosmic cycleशेवटल्या काळात (śevaṭlyā kāḷāt). Medium risk; reinforces baseline’s linear-time vs. cyclical-time distinction (cf. “fulfillment_of_prophecy” doctrine).
ἐμπαῖκταιempaiktai”scoffers, mockers”Those who deride and mock sacred truth, especially eschatological promises”scoffers,” “mockers”Predicted rise of mockers of the faith in the last daysथट्टा करणारे / निंदा करणारे (thaṭṭā karṇāre / nindā karṇāre). Medium risk.
ἀποδιορίζοντεςapodiorizontes”those who cause divisions, who separate”Those who create factional splits within the community”those who cause divisions,” “who separate themselves”These teachers fracture church unity — directly opposed to the letter’s call to contend together for one common faithफूट पाडणारे (phūṭ pāḍṇāre). Low-Medium risk.
ψυχικοίpsychikoi”worldly, unspiritual, natural/soulish”Governed by natural human faculties alone, without the Spirit’s regenerating presence (cf. 1 Cor 2:14)“worldly,” “unspiritual,” “sensual,” “merely natural”A precise anthropological contrast: these teachers are defined by lacking the Spirit, not by lacking a “soul.”सांसारिक वृत्तीचे (sāṃsārik vṛttīce). High risk. Must be carefully explained: this is not a body/soul/spirit taxonomy debate (which could collide with Samkhya puruṣa/prakṛti categories or Buddhist skandha analysis), but a simple contrast between those who have the Holy Spirit and those who do not.
πνεῦμα μὴ ἔχοντεςpneuma mē echontes”not having the Spirit”Reuse TM root: पवित्र आत्मा (negated)“not having the Spirit”Defines false teachers precisely as unregenerate — lacking the Holy Spirit despite claiming teaching authorityपवित्र आत्मा नसलेले (pavitra ātmā naslele). Reused — Critical per baseline (must never render “Spirit” here with परमात्मा/ब्रह्म).

Jude 1:20–21

ἐποικοδομοῦντεςepoikodomountes”building up, building upon”Constructive spiritual growth on an existing foundation”building yourselves up,” “building up”Positive contrast to the false teachers’ destructive divisivenessउभारणी करत (ubhāraṇī karat). Low-Medium risk.
ἁγιωτάτῃ…πίστειhagiōtatē…pistei”most holy faith” (superlative)The intensified, superlative form of ἅγιος modifying the faith once delivered (v.3)“most holy faith”Reinforces the preciousness/purity of the same “faith once delivered” from v.3अतिपवित्र विश्वास (atipavitra viśvās). Medium risk; reuses पवित्र + विश्वास (both TM) in superlative combination — translator note recommended to preserve the intensifying force.
ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳen pneumati hagiō”in the Holy Spirit”Reuse TM exactly: पवित्र आत्मा”in the Holy Spirit”Prayer empowered/directed by the Holy Spirit’s presence, not self-generated ritual techniqueपवित्र आत्म्यामध्ये (pavitra ātmyāmadhye). Reused exactly — Critical per baseline.
ἐν ἀγάπῃ θεοῦen agapē theou”in the love of God”God’s covenantal, self-giving love, as both source and sphere believers must remain within”in the love of God,” “in God’s love”Believers are commanded to actively maintain their position within God’s loveदेवाच्या प्रीतीत (devācyā prītīt). High risk. ἀγάπη = प्रीती (prīti) — new term; must be distinguished from the rich Warkari bhakti-prem devotional vocabulary directed at Vitthal; this is God’s covenantal love for and among believers grounded in Christ’s work, not generic devotional sentiment.
τηρήσατεtērēsate”keep! (imperative)“Same root as v.1, v.6, v.13, v.24 — the letter’s keyword”keep yourselves,” “keep”Key doctrinal pivot: believers are commanded to actively “keep” themselves, even though ultimately it is God who “keeps” them (v.24) — both truths held togetherराखा / जपा (imperative) (rākhā / japā). High risk — key thematic term (see v.6, v.24 notes); consistent rendering across all τηρέω occurrences is essential to preserve the letter’s central “keeping” theology.
προσδεχόμενοιprosdechomenoi”eagerly awaiting, expecting”Confident, hope-filled anticipation”waiting for,” “looking forward to,” “eagerly awaiting”Posture of hopeful expectation of Christ’s mercy, not anxious uncertaintyआतुरतेने वाट पाहत (āturatene vāṭ pāhat). Low-Medium risk.
τὸ ἔλεος τοῦ κυρίουto eleos tou kyriou”the mercy of the Lord”Compassionate favor extended to the undeserving, distinct from but related to grace”the mercy,” “the Lord’s mercy”Central term for the doctrine “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering” — mercy is the object of final hope, received not earnedदया (dayā). High risk. New term, not previously in baseline TM. दया is also the term commonly used for Vitthal’s compassionate favor in Warkari devotional literature — must be clearly taught as Christ’s specific, undeserved compassion shown to believers, paralleling but distinct from कृपा (grace) already flagged Critical in the baseline; translator notes should clarify the दया/कृपा relationship in Jude’s theology (mercy as the outworking of grace toward the needy/wavering).
ζωὴν αἰώνιονzōēn aiōnion”eternal life”Unending personal life in fellowship with God, inaugurated now and consummated at Christ’s return”eternal life,” “everlasting life”The ultimate hope toward which believers who are “kept” and shown “mercy” are movingसार्वकालिक जीवन (sārvakālik jīvan). Critical risk. New term, not previously in baseline TM (though closely related to तारण/salvation, already Critical). Must not be confused with मोक्ष (liberation from the cycle of rebirth) or with the Buddhist goal of ending samsaric existence through nirvana (cessation); this is unending personal, relational life with the living God through Christ, positively conceived, not an escape from or extinguishing of existence.

Jude 1:22–23

(Note: this passage has significant textual variation across manuscript traditions regarding the number of groups described — two or three — and the verbs used. The analysis below follows the widely-attested three-group reading reflected in most modern critical texts and English translations.)

OriginalTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMarathi rendering & risk
ἐλεᾶτεeleate”show mercy! (imperative, plural)“Active compassionate intervention, not passive pity”have mercy on,” “be merciful to”Core verb of the doctrine “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering” — believers are commanded to actively extend mercy, mirroring the mercy of v.21दया करा (imperative) (dayā karā). High risk; consistent with दया established in v.21.
διακρινομένουςdiakrinomenous”those who are wavering/doubting/disputing”Middle-voice form — those in a state of internal doubt, wavering, or contentious dispute over the faith”those who doubt,” “those who waver,” “the wavering”Identifies a specific pastoral category: believers destabilized by the false teachers’ influence, in need of patient mercy rather than harsh rejectionडळमळणारे / साशंक असणारे (ḍaḷamaḷaṇāre / sāśaṅk asaṇāre). High risk. Must convey spiritual instability/doubt needing compassionate rescue — not intellectual inquiry to be admired (as in some Indian philosophical traditions of structured doubt/debate), but a dangerous, mercy-requiring condition.
σῴζετεsōzete”save! (imperative)“Reuse TM root: तारण”save”Direct pastoral action pictured as active rescue from imminent dangerतारा (imperative, from तारण) (tārā). Reused root — Critical per baseline.
ἐκ πυρὸς ἁρπάζοντεςek pyros harpazontes”snatching out of the fire”Urgent, forceful rescue from mortal danger (echoes Zech 3:2; Amos 4:11)“snatching them out of the fire,” “pulling them out of the fire”Vivid urgency — this is emergency rescue, not leisurely correctionअग्नीतून हिसकावून काढणे (agnītūn hisakāvūn kāḍhaṇe). Medium-High risk. Must preserve the urgency of the rescue image; also connects to “eternal fire” (v.7) — the fire from which the wavering must be snatched is the same judgment-fire threatening the ungodly.
ἐλεᾶτε ἐν φόβῳeleate en phobō”show mercy with fear”Compassion tempered by appropriate caution/reverence, guarding against contamination by the sin being addressed”have mercy, mixed with fear,” “show mercy with caution”Mercy toward the compromised must be joined with vigilant caution, not naive tolerance of their sinभीतीने दया करा (bhītīne dayā karā). Medium risk.
ἐσπιλωμένον χιτῶναespilōmenon chitōna”stained/defiled garment”A tunic/undergarment polluted by contact with corrupt flesh — an image of contamination requiring careful handling”garment stained by the flesh,” “the garment defiled by sin”Even in showing mercy, believers must hate/reject the sin’s corrupting influence itselfदेहामुळे डागाळलेला अंगरखा (dehāmuḷe ḍāgāḷlelā aṅgarakhā). High risk. This “stain/defilement” language must be carefully handled: it refers to moral corruption from sinful indulgence, not ritual or hereditary impurity. Given that caste-linked ritual-purity/pollution doctrine is precisely what Ambedkarite Buddhist conversion explicitly and rightly rejected, this image must not be taught in any way that echoes birth-based or touch-based “pollution” categories — a clarifying teaching note is required.

PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book

Jude consists of a single chapter (25 verses). The core passage (Jude 1:3–23) has been fully treated verse-by-verse in Part 1 above. This section completes full-book coverage by treating the remaining verses — the epistolary salutation (1:1–2) and the closing doxology (1:24–25) — with the same field structure, confirming that every verse of the book has now received load-bearing term analysis.

Chapter 1, Verses 1–2 (Salutation)

OriginalTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMarathi rendering & risk
ἸούδαςIoudas”Judas/Jude” (proper name)Author’s name, brother of James (not Judas Iscariot)“Jude,” “Judas”Establishes authorship and family connection to James, the Jerusalem church leaderयहूदा / यहुदा (established Marathi NT form; distinct spelling convention from Judas Iscariot if the tradition distinguishes them). Low risk; follow existing Marathi Bible convention for this name.
δοῦλοςdoulos”slave, bondservant”Voluntary, total self-identification as Christ’s owned servant — a title of honor, not shame, in NT usage”servant,” “bondservant,” “slave”Jude identifies himself by relationship to Christ (ownership/service), not primarily by blood relation to Jesus (though he was Jesus’s half-brother)दास (dās). Low-Medium risk; established Marathi Christian term for devoted servanthood to Christ.
ἸακώβουIakōbou”James” (proper name)Jude’s brother, likely James the Just, leader of the Jerusalem church”James”Anchors Jude’s authority within the apostolic-era Jerusalem leadership circleयाकोब (Yākob). Low risk; established Marathi Bible name form.
ἠγαπημένοιςēgapēmenois”having been loved” (perfect passive participle)Settled, completed state of being the object of God’s love”loved,” “beloved”Recipients’ identity is grounded in God’s prior, completed act of love — foundational to the doctrine “Kept by God”प्रिय मानलेले (priya mānlele). High risk — related to ἀγάπη (प्रीती) established above; requires the perfect-tense nuance of a settled, unchanging divine love, not a fluctuating sentiment.
τετηρημένοιςtetērēmenois”having been kept” (perfect passive participle)Same root τηρέω as vv.6, 13, 21, 24 — used here of believers at the very outset of the letter”kept,” “preserved”The letter’s opening frames believers as already, securely kept for Jesus Christ — establishing the “Kept by God” doctrine before any warning about false teachers appearsराखलेले (rākhlele). High risk — key thematic term, first occurrence; sets up the wordplay carried through vv.6, 13, 21, 24.
κλητοῖςklētois”called ones”Reuse TM: बोलावलेले / पाचारण root”called,” “the called”Effectual, sovereign divine summons — same category of calling flagged Critical/High throughout the Romans baselineबोलावलेले (bolāvlele). Reused exactly from baseline — High risk.
ἔλεοςeleos”mercy”See extended treatment at v.21 above”mercy”Opens the letter’s greeting with the same मर्सी-term that will become central to the closing pastoral appeal (vv.21-23)दया (dayā). Reused from v.21 entry — High risk.
εἰρήνηeirēnē”peace”Reuse TM exactly: शांती”peace”Relational peace with God, part of the standard epistolary greeting triadशांती (śāntī). Reused exactly — Medium risk per baseline.
ἀγάπηagapē”love”See extended treatment at v.21 above”love”Completes the triad (mercy, peace, love) opening the letter — God’s love as the shared possession of the whole communityप्रीती (prītī). New term (see v.21) — High risk.
πληθυνθείηplēthyntheiē”may it be multiplied” (optative)A wish/prayer for abundant increase”be multiplied,” “increase abundantly”An epistolary blessing-wish, common to NT letter openingsविपुल प्रमाणात वाढो (vipul pramāṇāt vāḍho). Low risk.

Chapter 1, Verses 24–25 (Closing Doxology)

OriginalTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMarathi rendering & risk
δυναμένῳdynamenō”who is able”Denotes inherent, sufficient capability”who is able,” “who has power to”Grounds the entire doxology in God’s sufficient ability to accomplish what believers cannot secure for themselvesजो समर्थ आहे (jo samartha āhe). Medium risk; related to but distinct from देवाचे सामर्थ्य (baseline’s “power_of_god,” δύναμις θεοῦ, Romans 1:16) — same root, applied here to God’s ability to keep believers.
φυλάξαιphylaxai”to guard, keep from stumbling”A distinct Greek verb from τηρέω, overlapping in the “keep/guard” semantic domain, emphasizing protective guarding against a specific danger (stumbling/falling)“to keep,” “to guard,” “to protect”Climactic statement of the doctrine “Kept by God and Presented Blameless” — it is ultimately God, not the believer’s own effort, who guards against final failureराखणे / सांभाळणे (rākhaṇe / sāmbhāḷaṇe). High risk. Should be rendered so as to be recognizably part of the same “keeping” word-family as τηρέω (vv.1, 6, 13, 21), even though it is a distinct Greek verb, to preserve the letter’s climactic resolution of its central theme. Must not be confused with folk-protective “raksha” amulet/charm concepts.
ἀπταίστουςaptaistous”without stumbling”Free from moral failure/falling”from stumbling,” “from falling”Positive assurance of final security, not merely partial protectionन अडखळता (na aḍakhaḷatā). Low risk.
στῆσαι κατενώπιον τῆς δόξηςstēsai katenōpion tēs doxēs”to set/present [you] in the presence of his glory”Formal presentation before a sovereign — future, certain event”to present you before his glory,” “to set you in the presence of his glory”Reuse TM root: गौरव (glory). Believers will be formally presented before God’s glorious presenceत्याच्या गौरवासमोर उभे करणे (tyācyā gauravāsamor ubhe karaṇe). High risk; गौरव reused exactly from baseline.
ἀμώμουςamōmous”blameless, unblemished”OT sacrificial-purity term (unblemished offering) applied to believers’ final moral standing”blameless,” “without blemish,” “faultless”Climax of “Kept by God and Presented Blameless” — believers will be presented not merely forgiven but positively blameless, a status conferred by God, echoing OT sacrificial imageryनिर्दोष / निष्कलंक (nirdoṣ / niṣkalaṅk). High risk. Must convey a status conferred by God’s preserving grace, not a self-achieved ritual perfection; connects conceptually to imputed righteousness (आरोपित नीतिमत्त्व, already Critical in baseline).
ἐν ἀγαλλιάσειen agalliasei”with exultation/great joy”Overflowing, triumphant joy”with great joy,” “with rejoicing”The presentation before God’s glory is an occasion of triumphant celebration, not fearful uncertaintyपरमानंदाने (paramānandāne). Low risk.
μόνῳ θεῷ σωτῆριmonō theō sōtēri”to the only God, Savior”Monotheistic exclusivity (“only”) combined with the title “Savior""to the only God, our Savior,” “to the only wise God our Savior”Reinforces exclusive monotheism directly tied to salvation — no other savior existsएकमात्र परमेश्वर, आपला तारणारा (ekmātra Parameśvar, āplā tāraṇārā). Critical risk. θεός reused exactly (परमेश्वर); σωτήρ is a new term (तारणारा, derived transparently from तारण per baseline convention) — must not be rendered with a term suggesting one savior-figure among many (avoiding any resonance with bhakti “ishta-devata” chosen-deity frameworks).
δόξαdoxa”glory”Reuse TM exactly: गौरव”glory”First in the fourfold doxological stringगौरव. Reused exactly — High risk per baseline.
μεγαλωσύνηmegalōsynē”majesty, greatness”Sovereign, transcendent greatness — a term reserved almost exclusively for God in the NT (cf. Heb 1:3, 8:1)“majesty,” “greatness”Second in the doxological string, distinct from δόξαमहिमा (mahimā). Medium risk; must be kept distinct in Marathi from गौरव (glory) to preserve the fourfold rhetorical fullness of the doxology.
κράτοςkratos”might, dominion, sovereign power”Effective ruling power/strength, common in NT doxologies (1 Tim 6:16; 1 Pet 4:11, 5:11; Rev 1:6)“power,” “dominion,” “might”Third in the doxological stringसामर्थ्य (sāmarthya). Medium risk. Reuses the same word established for “power_of_god” (देवाचे सामर्थ्य) in the baseline to maintain the avoid-शक्ती convention; note for translators that this is a distinct Greek word (κράτος, not δύναμις) applied here doxologically rather than soteriologically.
ἐξουσίαexousia”authority, right to rule”Legitimate, delegated or inherent authority”authority,” “power,” “dominion”Fourth and final term in the doxological string, completing the fourfold ascriptionअधिकार (adhikār). Low-Medium risk.
πρὸ παντὸς τοῦ αἰῶνος…εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶναςpro pantos tou aiōnos…eis pantas tous aiōnas”before all time/every age…unto all the ages”Denotes God’s eternity — before, through, and beyond all created time”before all time…forever,” “before all ages, now, and forevermore”Frames God’s preserving power (the letter’s final theme) within his own eternal, unchanging nature — not a cyclical cosmic timescaleसर्व युगांपूर्वीपासून… सर्वकाळपर्यंत (sarva yugāṃpūrvīpāsūn…sarvakāḷaparyant). Medium risk; reinforces the linear-eternity vs. cyclical-time distinction already flagged in the baseline’s “fulfillment_of_prophecy” doctrine.
ἀμήνamēn”amen”Established liturgical affirmation”amen”Standard closing affirmationआमेन (āmen). Reused exactly per baseline system prompt convention — Low risk.

Full-book coverage confirmation: All 25 verses of Jude have now received load-bearing theological term treatment — vv.1–2 (salutation) and vv.24–25 (doxology) in this Part 2 section, and vv.3–23 (core passage) in Part 1. Jude has only one chapter; no chapter has been silently omitted.
