Semantic Analysis
Galatians — Semantic Analysis (Original Koine Greek → Marathi)
Method and Scope
This document analyzes the entire book of Galatians, chapter 1 through chapter 6, in the original Koine Greek. The core passage, Galatians 2:15–21, receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level study of its load-bearing theological terms using the same fields. Where a term is already established in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json, the Marathi rendering is reused exactly and marked “(reuse — Romans TM)”; only the Galatians-specific contextual risk is added. New terms not present in the Romans package are proposed here for the first time and must be added to translation memory before Phase 2 begins.
Field key used throughout:
- Greek: original word + transliteration
- Literal: root/literal meaning
- Range: semantic range in Koine usage
- English variants: common English Bible renderings
- Theological meaning in Galatians: contextual doctrinal freight
- Marathi rendering & risk: proposed rendering, risk tier, and destination-culture collision notes
PART A — CORE PASSAGE: Galatians 2:15–21 (Verse-by-Verse)
Galatians 2:15
Greek: Ἡμεῖς φύσει Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ οὐκ ἐξ ἐθνῶν ἁμαρτωλοί (Hēmeis physei Ioudaioi kai ouk ex ethnōn hamartōloi)
- Ἰουδαῖοι (Ioudaioi) — Literal: “Jews.” Range: ethnic-religious identity, covenant people. English variants: “Jews,” “Jewish people.” Theological meaning: Paul speaks as a covenant insider addressing Peter, establishing common ground before the argument’s reversal. Marathi: यहूदी (Yahūdī) — Risk: Medium. Proper ethnic-religious term; low ambiguity, but teaching material must clarify this is a historical-covenantal identity, not a race-hierarchy claim.
- φύσει (physei) — Literal: “by nature/by birth.” Range: inherent status from birth, as opposed to status acquired by choice or conversion. English variants: “by birth,” “by nature,” “natural-born.” Theological meaning: Paul concedes a real, birth-based covenant privilege for Jews, only to argue in v.16 that this privilege does not itself justify. Marathi: स्वभावतः / जन्मतः (svabhāvataḥ / janmataḥ) — Risk: High. स्वभाव is a heavily loaded term in Hindu philosophical vocabulary (e.g., Bhagavad Gita 18:41–44 grounds caste-duty in inborn svabhāva). Rendering “Jew by nature” with स्वभावतः risks reading as an endorsement of a birth-determined spiritual hierarchy — precisely the caste framework Ambedkarite Buddhist converts rejected. Prefer जन्मतः (by birth) over स्वभावतः, and a translator note is required wherever this word appears.
- ἐξ ἐθνῶν ἁμαρτωλοί (ex ethnōn hamartōloi) — Literal: “sinners from the nations.” Reuses baseline gentiles = अन्यजातीय and sin = पाप. Theological meaning: this is the Jewish insider’s stereotype of Gentiles that Paul is about to demolish in the following verse — not Paul’s own final verdict. Risk: High (reuse) — must be clear this is reported viewpoint, not Paul’s conclusion, to avoid the phrase reading as a settled slur against Gentile readers.
Galatians 2:16
This verse is the thesis statement of the entire letter (parallel in weight to Romans 1:16–17) and uses the verb three times. Risk: Critical. Every occurrence in this verse must use the compound phrase, never abbreviated to “माफी” or “पुण्य.”
- ἔργα νόμου (erga nomou) — Literal: “works of law.” Range: covenant-marking observances (circumcision, food laws, sabbath) understood as the basis of righteous standing. English variants: “works of the law,” “the law’s works,” “legal works.” Theological meaning: the specific target of Paul’s polemic — not “good deeds” in general, but reliance on Torah-observance for right standing before God. Marathi: नियमशास्त्राची कर्मे (niyamśāstrācī karme) — Risk: Critical (new term, must be added to TM). नियमशास्त्र is already the established, protected rendering of νόμος (reuse — Romans TM, High). कर्मे must not be allowed to drift toward the Hindu karma-merit economy (कर्मफळ) that कृपा’s baseline note already guards against, nor toward the Buddhist self-cultivation path; a translator note contrasting नियमशास्त्राची कर्मे with कृपा/विश्वास is required at every occurrence in this passage.
- πίστεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ / πίστεως Χριστοῦ (pisteōs Iēsou Christou / pisteōs Christou) — Literal: “faith of Jesus Christ” / “faith of Christ.” Range: this is the famous pistis Christou genitive, grammatically ambiguous between an objective genitive (“faith in Christ,” believer’s trust directed at Christ) and a subjective genitive (“the faithfulness of Christ,” Christ’s own faithful obedience). English variants: “faith in Jesus Christ” (objective, majority tradition) vs. “the faithfulness of Jesus Christ” (subjective, growing scholarly minority view). Theological meaning: even under the majority (objective) reading, the object of faith must always be traceable to Christ specifically, not to “faith” as an abstract virtue. Marathi: येशू ख्रिस्तावरील विश्वास (Yeśū Khristāvarīl viśvāsa) (“faith resting on/directed at Jesus Christ”) — Risk: Critical. This is a genuine translation ambiguity affecting a Critical-risk doctrinal term; per the Romans package’s ambiguity-handling protocol, the objective-genitive rendering is selected as the doctrinal default for this curriculum (consistent with 3:22 and Romans usage), the subjective alternative must be recorded as “alternatives_considered,” and every occurrence must be flagged for human theologian review.
- οὐ δικαιωθήσεται πᾶσα σάρξ (ou dikaiōthēsetai pasa sarx) — Literal: “no flesh will be justified” (quoting Psalm 143:2, a Hebrew idiom, kol basar, meaning “no human being,” not a statement about the physical body). English variants: “no one,” “no human being,” “no flesh.” Marathi: कोणीही मनुष्य नीतिमान ठरणार नाही (koṇīhī manuṣya nītimān ṭharaṇār nāhī) — Risk: Medium-High. This is a Hebraism, not the doctrinal “flesh” (σάρξ as sin-inclined nature) that dominates Galatians 5. A literal रendering using देह here would wrongly import the flesh-vs-Spirit conflict into a verse that is simply saying “no person.” A translator note distinguishing this idiomatic “flesh = person” from the doctrinal “flesh = sinful nature” sense (Gal. 5:16–24) is required.
Galatians 2:17
Greek: εἰ δὲ ζητοῦντες δικαιωθῆναι ἐν Χριστῷ εὑρέθημεν καὶ αὐτοὶ ἁμαρτωλοί, ἆρα Χριστὸς ἁμαρτίας διάκονος; μὴ γένοιτο.
- ἁμαρτωλοί (hamartōloi) — reuse sin = पाप family. Risk: High (reuse).
- ἁμαρτίας διάκονος (hamartias diakonos) — Literal: “servant/minister of sin.” Range: διάκονος = one who renders service/ministry, often with dignity (cf. “deacon”). English variants: “agent of sin,” “minister of sin,” “servant of sin.” Theological meaning: Paul’s rhetorical, indignantly-rejected hypothetical — does grace-based justification make Christ complicit in sin? Marathi: पापाचा सेवक (pāpācā sevak) — Risk: Medium. Care is needed that सेवक (servant/minister) here is not confused with the dignified sense of “minister of the gospel” used elsewhere for Christian ministry; context must make clear this is a hypothetical accusation Paul rejects.
- μὴ γένοιτο (mē genoito) — Literal: “may it not be/become.” Range: Paul’s strongest idiomatic negation, used repeatedly across his letters (cf. Romans 3:4, 6, 31; 6:2, 15; 7:7, 13; 9:14; 11:1, 11). English variants: “By no means!,” “Certainly not!,” “God forbid!” Marathi: असे कधीही न होवो! (Ase kadhīhī na hovo!) — Risk: Low-Medium. Must be rendered identically wherever it occurs across the curriculum for consistency; avoid literal “देव मनाई करो” (which imports an unrelated invocation) — the idiom is Paul’s own emphatic denial, not a distinct prayer formula.
Galatians 2:18
Greek: εἰ γὰρ ἃ κατέλυσα ταῦτα πάλιν οἰκοδομῶ, παραβάτην ἐμαυτὸν συνιστάνω.
- κατέλυσα (katelysa) — Literal: “I tore down/destroyed.” Marathi: पाडून टाकले (pāḍūn ṭākle) — Risk: Low.
- οἰκοδομῶ (oikodomō) — Literal: “I build/rebuild.” Marathi: पुन्हा बांधतो (punhā bāndhto) — Risk: Low. (Note: same root as “edification/build up,” reused positively elsewhere in the NT — here used ironically of rebuilding the law as a basis for standing before God.)
- παραβάτης (parabatēs) — Literal: “one who steps across/oversteps,” i.e., “transgressor” or “law-breaker.” Range: a technical legal term for violation of a defined boundary (νόμος). English variants: “transgressor,” “law-breaker,” “offender.” Theological meaning: connects directly to “Law’s Purpose” — the law defines and exposes transgression rather than curing it. Marathi: नियमशास्त्राचे उल्लंघन करणारा (niyamśāstrāce ullaṅghan karṇārā) — Risk: High (new term). Must reuse नियमशास्त्र (baseline High-risk term) as its root so the connection to “law” is visible in Marathi as it is in Greek.
Galatians 2:19
Greek: ἐγὼ γὰρ διὰ νόμου νόμῳ ἀπέθανον ἵνα θεῷ ζήσω.
- διὰ νόμου νόμῳ ἀπέθανον (dia nomou nomō apethanon) — Literal: “through law, to law I died.” Range: a deliberate Pauline paradox — the law itself (in condemning Paul) drove him to the death that ends the law’s claim over him (fulfilled typologically in Christ’s death, v.20). English variants: “through the law I died to the law.” Theological meaning: central to “The Law’s Purpose” and “Law and Grace” doctrines — the law’s rightful work is to condemn and thereby drive the sinner to Christ, not to provide a righteousness of its own. Marathi: नियमशास्त्राद्वारे मी नियमशास्त्रासाठी मेलो (niyamśāstrādvāre mī niyamśāstrāsāṭhī melo) — Risk: High. This paradoxical “died to the law” language must not be flattened into “I stopped following religious rules”; it is a specific claim about the law’s condemning verdict being exhausted in the believer’s union with Christ’s death (v.20), and requires a translator note.
- θεῷ ζήσω (theō zēsō) — Literal: “I might live to/for God.” Marathi: परमेश्वरासाठी जगावे (Parameśvarāsāṭhī jagāve) — reuse God = परमेश्वर (Critical). Risk: Medium.
Galatians 2:20
Greek: Χριστῷ συνεσταύρωμαι· ζῶ δὲ οὐκέτι ἐγώ, ζῇ δὲ ἐν ἐμοὶ Χριστός· ὃ δὲ νῦν ζῶ ἐν σαρκί, ἐν πίστει ζῶ τῇ τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἀγαπήσαντός με καὶ παραδόντος ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ.
- Χριστῷ συνεσταύρωμαι (Christō synestaurōmai) — Literal: “I have been co-crucified with Christ” (perfect tense — a past event with continuing present effect). Range: συν- (“with”) + σταυρόω (“crucify”) — a unique compound expressing union with Christ specifically in his death. English variants: “I have been crucified with Christ,” “I am crucified with Christ.” Theological meaning: the doctrinal center of “Crucified with Christ” — not moral imitation of Christ’s suffering, but a real, once-for-all identification with his death that ends the old self’s standing under the law’s condemnation (v.19) and under sin’s dominion. Marathi: मी ख्रिस्तासोबत क्रूसावर खिळलो गेलो आहे (mī Khristāsobat krūsāvar khiḷlo gelo āhe) — Risk: Critical (new term; must be added to TM). Requires the noun क्रूस (krūs) = “cross,” itself a High-risk term not present in the Romans baseline (Romans discusses the cross only implicitly). This union-with-Christ’s-death claim must be kept distinct from any generic devotional self-mortification/asceticism (Hindu tapasya, Buddhist ascetic self-denial) — it is God’s decisive act accomplished once in Christ’s historical death, appropriated by faith, not a practice of ongoing self-discipline.
- ζῶ δὲ οὐκέτι ἐγώ, ζῇ δὲ ἐν ἐμοὶ Χριστός (zō de ouketi egō, zē de en emoi Christos) — Literal: “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” Marathi: आता मी जगत नाही, तर ख्रिस्त माझ्यामध्ये जगतो (ātā mī jagat nāhī, tar Khrist mājhyāmadhye jagato) — Risk: High. This claim of Christ’s indwelling life displacing the old self carries a distinct conceptual challenge for readers shaped by Navayana Buddhist anatta teaching (no fixed, continuous self) — here the “I” is emphatically retained (the verse still says “I live,” ἐν πίστει ζῶ), even while transformed by Christ’s indwelling. Teaching material should present this relationally (a real person, now indwelt and reoriented by Christ) rather than resting on either a strong Western substance-self metaphysics or its Buddhist denial.
- ἐν σαρκί (en sarki) — Literal: “in flesh.” Range here: neutral, physical, bodily existence — Paul’s continuing mortal life on earth, NOT the sin-inclined “flesh” sense dominant in Galatians 5. Marathi: देहात (dehāt) — Risk: High. Because the same Marathi word देह must also render the doctrinal “flesh vs. Spirit” sense in chapter 5, a translator note is required at every occurrence distinguishing “bodily/mortal existence” (neutral, ch. 2, 4) from “sin-inclined nature opposed to the Spirit” (doctrinal, ch. 5) to prevent conflation.
- ἐν πίστει…τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ (en pistei…tou huiou tou theou) — reuse faith = विश्वास (High) + Son of God = देवाचा पुत्र (Critical). Risk: Critical (reuse); this is the same pistis Christou ambiguity noted at v.16, here unambiguously objective (“faith directed at the Son of God”) given the following relative clause describing the Son’s own action toward Paul.
- τοῦ ἀγαπήσαντός με καὶ παραδόντος ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ (tou agapēsantos me kai paradontos heauton hyper emou) — Literal: “who loved me and gave himself for me.” ἀγαπάω (agapaō) — reuse note under Chapter 5 love = प्रीती entry (High). παραδόντος ἑαυτὸν (paradontos heauton) — Literal: “handed himself over.” Range: self-giving, sacrificial surrender, echoing atonement/substitution language. Marathi: स्वतःला माझ्यासाठी दिले (svataḥlā mājhyāsāṭhī dile) — Risk: High. Establishes the personal, substitutionary character of the atonement (“for me,” not merely “for humanity in general”) — important for a curriculum built around Galatians 2:20’s intensely personal confession.
Galatians 2:21
Greek: Οὐκ ἀθετῶ τὴν χάριν τοῦ θεοῦ· εἰ γὰρ διὰ νόμου δικαιοσύνη, ἄρα Χριστὸς δωρεὰν ἀπέθανεν.
- ἀθετῶ (athetō) — Literal: “I set aside/nullify/reject” (a formal, legal-sounding verb, used of annulling a covenant or a person’s stated will). English variants: “nullify,” “set aside,” “frustrate,” “reject.” Theological meaning: to treat “justification by law” as viable would be to declare God’s grace null and void. Marathi: मी देवाची कृपा निरर्थक ठरवत नाही (mī Devācī kṛpā nirarthak ṭharavat nāhī) — Risk: Critical (new term paired with reused grace = कृपा, Critical). This is one of the sharpest grace-vs-works contrast statements in the letter and must be flagged for theologian review per the grace-merit escalation rule already established in the Romans package.
- δικαιοσύνη (dikaiosynē) — reuse righteousness = नीतिमत्त्व (Critical). Risk: Critical (reuse).
- δωρεὰν ἀπέθανεν (dōrean apethanen) — Literal: “died for nothing/in vain/without cause.” Range: δωρεάν can mean “as a free gift” or “for no purpose/needlessly” depending on context; here clearly the latter, given the conditional logic. English variants: “died for nothing,” “died in vain,” “died to no purpose.” Marathi: ख्रिस्त व्यर्थ मरण पावला (Khrist vyartha maraṇ pāvalā) — Risk: Critical (new term). This is the logical hinge of the entire justification-by-faith argument (2:15–21 as a unit): if law-righteousness were possible, the cross itself becomes pointless. Must be rendered with full argumentative force, never softened to something like “died without much benefit.”
PART B — WHOLE-BOOK CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY
Chapter 1 (Galatians 1:1–24)
Load-bearing terms beyond the core passage:
- ἀπόστολος (apostolos) — reuse apostle = प्रेषित (Medium). Gal. 1:1 stresses “not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father” — Paul’s apostleship doctrine (see doctrine list) requires this divine-commission emphasis to be visible in the Marathi rendering of the surrounding clause, not just the noun.
- ἐγείραντος αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν (egeirantos auton ek nekrōn) — reuse resurrection = पुनरुत्थान (Critical). Risk: Critical (reuse).
- χάρις καὶ εἰρήνη (charis kai eirēnē) — reuse grace = कृपा + peace = शांती. This exact greeting formula (1:3) must match the Romans-package rendering verbatim for cross-document consistency.
- δοὺς ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶν, ὅπως ἐξέληται ἡμᾶς ἐκ τοῦ αἰῶνος τοῦ ἐνεστῶτος πονηροῦ (1:4) — “gave himself for our sins, to deliver us from the present evil age.”
- ἐξέληται (exelētai) — Literal: “might take out/rescue/deliver.” Marathi: सोडवावे (soḍavāve) — Risk: Medium. Avoid मुक्त-root verbs, which drift toward the baseline-forbidden मुक्ती (liberation) association.
- τοῦ αἰῶνος τοῦ ἐνεστῶτος πονηροῦ (tou aiōnos tou enestōtos ponērou) — Literal: “the present evil age.” Range: αἰών = a bounded era within linear redemptive history, decisively ended/overlapped by Christ’s death and coming return — NOT a repeating cosmic cycle. Marathi: सध्याचा दुष्ट काळ (sadhyācā duṣṭa kāḷ) — Risk: High. Avoid युग (yuga) for “age”: युग is the loaded Hindu cosmological term for one of the four cyclically repeating cosmic eras (Satya, Tretā, Dvāpara, Kali Yuga). Using युग here would import a cyclical-time framework directly contrary to Galatians’ and the whole NT’s linear, one-time-fulfillment eschatology (cf. baseline’s “fulfillment_of_prophecy” doctrine note on cyclic time). काळ (era/time) is the safe choice.
- θαυμάζω ὅτι οὕτως ταχέως μετατίθεσθε…εἰς ἕτερον εὐαγγέλιον (1:6) — “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting…for a different gospel.”
- ἕτερον εὐαγγέλιον (heteron euangelion) — Literal: “a different/other gospel.” Marathi: दुसरे शुभवर्तमान (dusare śubhavartamān) — Risk: High (new term, pairs with reused gospel = शुभवर्तमान). Central to the “True Gospel versus False Gospels” doctrine — must read as a rival, false proclamation, not a legitimate variant.
- μετατρέψαι τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Χριστοῦ (1:7) — “to distort/pervert the gospel of Christ.” Marathi: ख्रिस्ताचे शुभवर्तमान विकृत करणे (Khristāce śubhavartamān vikṛt karṇe) — Risk: High (new term).
- ἀνάθεμα ἔστω (anathema estō) (1:8–9, twice) — Literal: “let him be accursed/set apart for destruction” (a term from LXX ḥerem, total consecration to divine judgment). English variants: “let him be accursed,” “let him be anathema,” “let him be condemned.” Theological meaning: the strongest possible curse-formula, applied specifically to anyone (even an apostle or angel) who preaches a false gospel — establishes the absolute non-negotiability of the true gospel. Marathi: तो शापित असो (to śāpit aso) — Risk: Critical (new term, must be added to TM). This is among the strongest language in the letter and must not be softened into mere disapproval (“तो चुकीचा आहे”); it is a formal curse-pronouncement. Requires theologian review at every occurrence.
- δοῦλος Χριστοῦ (doulos Christou) (1:10) — Literal: “slave/bondservant of Christ.” Marathi: ख्रिस्ताचा दास (Khristācā dāsa) — Risk: High (new term). Paul’s self-designation as Christ’s owned slave is a positive, honorific self-description in the NT idiom — but दास carries a painful historical resonance of caste-based servitude and bonded labor in the Marathi/Indian context, sensitive territory especially for Ambedkarite Buddhist-background readers who explicitly rejected such subjugated identity. Teaching material must frame this as voluntary, dignified, exclusive devotion to Christ (contrasted with “pleasing men”), never as degrading bondage, and should note the deliberate irony Paul intends: total ownership by Christ is what makes him free from needing to please any human master.
- δι’ ἀποκαλύψεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (1:12) — “through a revelation of Jesus Christ.” ἀποκάλυψις (apokalypsis) — Literal: “unveiling/uncovering.” Marathi: प्रकटीकरण (prakaṭīkaraṇ) — Risk: Medium (new term). Relates to “Inspiration of Scripture”/apostolic authority doctrine — Paul’s gospel is received directly, not through human tradition transmission (contrast with παράδοσις below).
- ἐδίωκον τὴν ἐκκλησίαν (1:13, 23) — reuse church = मंडळी (Medium) + new persecute = छळ करणे (chaḷ karṇe) — Risk: Medium.
- Ἰουδαϊσμῷ (Ioudaismō) (1:13–14) — “Judaism.” Marathi: यहूदी मत/यहूदीधर्म (Yahūdī mat / Yahūdī dharma) — Risk: Medium. Prefer यहूदी मत (Jewish religious system) over यहूदीधर्म where possible, since baseline flags धर्म as carrying a politically loaded, caste-linked charge in Marathi; here it names an actual historic religion rather than “law” as an abstract category, so some latitude exists, but consistency and a clarifying note are still required.
- τῶν πατρικῶν μου παραδόσεων (1:14) — “the traditions of my fathers.” παράδοσις (paradosis) — Marathi: वाडवडिलांची परंपरा (vāḍavaḍilāṃcī paramparā) — Risk: Medium. परंपरा (paramparā) resonates with Hindu guru-paramparā (teaching lineage) concepts; note the resonance without importing that specific religious-authority structure.
- ἀφορίσας με ἐκ κοιλίας μητρός μου (1:15) — “set me apart from my mother’s womb.” ἀφορίσας (aphorisas) — Marathi: वेगळे केले (vegaḷe kele) — Risk: High. Connects to “Divine Calling”/election doctrine (reuse called = बोलावलेले, election = देवाची निवड); God’s initiating, sovereign choice prior to any human decision — must not be phrased to echo a karma-birth framework.
- σαρκὶ καὶ αἵματι (1:16) — idiom, “flesh and blood” = human beings/human counsel. Marathi: कोणत्याही मनुष्याचा सल्ला (koṇatyāhī manuṣyācā salla) — Risk: Low-Medium. Idiomatic, not the doctrinal “flesh” sense; footnote to prevent confusion with ch. 5 usage.
- Proper names (Low risk, established/standard forms): Cephas = केफा (Kephā), James = याकोब (Yākob), Arabia = अरबस्तान, Damascus = दिमिष्क, Syria = सूरिया, Cilicia = किलकिया, Judea = यहूदीया.
Chapter 2 (Galatians 2:1–14; vv. 15–21 treated above)
- ψευδαδέλφους (pseudadelphous) (2:4) — “false brothers.” Marathi: खोटे बंधू (khoṭe bandhū) — Risk: Medium (new term). “True Gospel versus False Gospels” doctrine.
- κατασκοπῆσαι τὴν ἐλευθερίαν ἡμῶν…ἵνα ἡμᾶς καταδουλώσουσιν (2:4) — “to spy out our freedom…to enslave us.”
- ἐλευθερία (eleutheria) — Literal: “freedom, liberty.” Marathi: स्वातंत्र्य (svātantrya) — Risk: High (new term, central to “Freedom in Christ” doctrine). स्वातंत्र्य is the standard, secular-political Marathi word for freedom/independence (strongly associated with national independence, स्वातंत्र्य दिन) — it does not by itself collide with मोक्ष/मुक्ती, but teaching material must clarify this is freedom from the law’s condemnation and from sin’s dominion, not political liberty nor liberation-from-rebirth. A distinct risk: overuse of a nationalistic register could flatten the specifically soteriological sense.
- καταδουλώσουσιν (katadoulōsousin) — “to enslave/bring into bondage.” Marathi: गुलाम करणे / दास्यात आणणे (gulām karṇe / dāsyāt āṇṇe) — Risk: High.
- περιτέμνειν (peritemnein) (2:3) — reuse circumcision entry below (ch. 5). First occurrence in the letter; establishes the central controversy.
- οἱ δοκοῦντες στῦλοι εἶναι (2:9) — “those reputed to be pillars.” στῦλος (stylos) — Marathi: स्तंभ (stambha) — Risk: Low. Metaphor for James, Cephas, John as recognized leaders; low doctrinal risk, standard metaphor.
- δεξιὰς…κοινωνίας (2:9) — “right hand of fellowship.” Reuse fellowship = सहभागिता (Low). Risk: Low.
- τῶν πτωχῶν (2:10) — “the poor.” Marathi: गरीब (garīb) — Risk: Low.
- κατεγνωσμένος ἦν / ὑπόκρισις (2:11–13) — Peter’s “hypocrisy” at Antioch. Marathi: दांभिकपणा (dāmbhikpaṇā) — Risk: Medium (new term). Behavioral/ecclesial integrity issue tied to the gospel’s practical outworking, not itself a core doctrinal collision term, but must be rendered with enough force to preserve Paul’s public rebuke of Peter (2:11, 14).
- οὐκ ὀρθοποδοῦσιν πρὸς τὴν ἀλήθειαν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου (2:14) — “not walking straight/in step with the truth of the gospel.” Reuse gospel = शुभवर्तमान; new idiom: शुभवर्तमानाच्या सत्याप्रमाणे चालत नव्हते (śubhavartamānācyā satyāpramāṇe cālat navhate) — Risk: Medium.
- ἰουδαΐζειν (ioudaizein) (2:14) — “to Judaize/live like a Jew.” Marathi: यहूदी पद्धतीने जगणे (Yahūdī paddhatīne jagaṇe) — Risk: Medium.
Chapter 3 (Galatians 3:1–29)
- τίς ὑμᾶς ἐβάσκανεν (3:1) — “who has bewitched you?” βασκαίνω (baskainō) — Literal: “to cast an evil eye upon, to bewitch.” Range: literally refers to the folk-belief “evil eye” curse. Marathi: तुम्हांला कोणी भुरळ घातली/जादू केली? (tumhāṃlā koṇī bhuraḷ ghātlī / jādū kelī?) — Risk: High (new term). Strikingly, the Greek term itself is literally “evil-eye” language, closely paralleling the Marathi/Indian folk concept of “नजर लागणे” (the evil eye/najar). This resonance can help communicate Paul’s sense of “you have been deceived by a malicious external influence,” but risks being read as endorsing literal folk sorcery/curse belief rather than Paul’s actual point — rhetorical exposure of false teachers’ deceptive persuasion. Requires a translator/teacher note.
- προεγράφη ἐσταυρωμένος (3:1) — “publicly portrayed as crucified.” Reuse cross/crucified vocabulary (High, established in core passage). New verb: उघडपणे चित्रित करण्यात आले (ughaḍapaṇe citrit karṇyāt āle) — Risk: Medium.
- ἐξ ἔργων νόμου ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως (3:2, 5) — reuse works of the law (Critical) and faith = विश्वास (High). Central Law-vs-Grace contrast.
- ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην (3:6, quoting Gen. 15:6) — reuse baseline imputed_righteousness = आरोपित नीतिमत्त्व (Critical). Risk: Critical (reuse) — must match baseline rendering exactly; this is the direct scriptural proof-text for justification by faith and must be word-for-word consistent with any other curriculum document quoting Genesis 15:6.
- υἱοί…Ἀβραάμ (3:7) — “sons of Abraham.” Marathi: अब्राहामाचे पुत्र (Abrāhāmāce putra) — Risk: Medium (new term). Spiritual lineage by faith, distinct from ethnic/biological descent — sets up the doctrine of “The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise.”
- προευηγγελίσατο τῷ Ἀβραάμ (3:8) — “preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham.” Reuse gospel = शुभवर्तमान (High) + gentiles = अन्यजातीय (Medium).
- εὐλογοῦνται σὺν τῷ πιστῷ Ἀβραάμ (3:9) — “blessed along with Abraham.” εὐλογία/εὐλογέω (eulogia/eulogeō) — Marathi: आशीर्वाद (āśīrvād) — Risk: Medium (new term). Standard Marathi word for blessing, but carries strong association with a guru’s or elder’s personal blessing in Hindu devotional practice; teaching material should clarify this blessing is God’s covenantal favor tied to Abraham specifically, received by faith, not a general devotional benediction.
- κατάρα τοῦ νόμου (katara tou nomou) (3:10, 13) — “curse of the law.” Marathi: नियमशास्त्राचा शाप (niyamśāstrācā śāp) — Risk: High (new term, central to “The Law’s Purpose” doctrine).
- ὁ δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεως ζήσεται (3:11, quoting Hab. 2:4) — reuse righteousness/faith. CONSISTENCY REQUIREMENT: this quotation is identical to the one anchoring Romans 1:17 in the baseline package; the Marathi rendering here MUST be verbatim identical to whatever rendering is fixed for Romans 1:17, per the cross-document consistency rule already established. Risk: Critical.
- ἐξηγόρασεν / ἐξαγοράζω (exagorazō) (3:13; also 4:5) — “redeemed/bought back.” Literal: “to buy out of the marketplace,” i.e., to purchase and thereby release from a former owner/condition. English variants: “redeem,” “ransom,” “buy back.” Marathi: मोल देऊन सोडवणे (mol deūn soḍavaṇe) — Risk: Critical (new term, must be added to TM). Deliberately avoids any मुक्त-root rendering, which would drift toward the baseline-forbidden मोक्ष/मुक्ती (Hindu liberation) association; the emphasis must fall on a price paid (Christ “becoming a curse for us”), a legal/commercial transaction of release, not a self-attained spiritual liberation.
- γενόμενος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν κατάρα…ἐπὶ ξύλου (3:13, quoting Deut. 21:23) — “having become a curse for us…hanged on a tree.” ξύλον (xylon) — Literal: “wood/tree.” Marathi: झाडावर/लाकडावर टांगलेला (jhāḍāvar/lākḍāvar ṭāṅgalelā) — Risk: Medium-High (new term). Old Testament typological background (crucifixion as a form of the Deuteronomic curse-of-hanging) needs brief explanation for readers without OT narrative literacy.
- τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν τοῦ πνεύματος (3:14) — “the promise of the Spirit.” ἐπαγγελία (epangelia) — Literal: “a promise, an announcement of intent.” Marathi: वचन (vacan) — Risk: High (new term, central to “The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise” doctrine). Distinct from but related to covenant = करार (baseline High-risk term, reserved for διαθήκη); वचन should be used specifically for ἐπαγγελία so the two Greek concepts remain distinguishable in Marathi.
- διαθήκην (3:15, 17) — reuse covenant = करार (High). Risk: High (reuse). Paul’s illustration (a ratified human covenant/will cannot be annulled) argues typologically that God’s covenant-promise likewise cannot be annulled by the later-arriving law.
- σπέρμα (sperma) (3:16, 19, 29) — Literal: “seed.” Range: collective (“descendants/offspring”) or singular (“a single descendant”) — Paul’s argument in 3:16 turns explicitly on the Greek noun’s grammatical singularity (“he does not say ‘and to seeds,’ referring to many, but ‘and to your seed,’ referring to one, who is Christ”). English variants: “seed,” “offspring,” “descendant(s).” Marathi: वंशज (vaṃśaj) — Risk: High (new term). Marathi वंशज does not carry the same singular/plural grammatical ambiguity that the Greek and Hebrew nouns do (both function as collective nouns that can be read either way); Paul’s wordplay is therefore not straightforwardly reproducible and REQUIRES an explanatory translator note preserving the argument’s logic rather than relying on the Marathi noun’s grammar to carry it.
- παιδαγωγός (paidagōgos) (3:24–25) — Literal: “child-attendant, tutor-guardian” — in Greco-Roman households, typically a trusted household slave charged with escorting, disciplining, and supervising a freeborn child until the age of maturity (not a teacher of content). English variants: “guardian,” “tutor,” “schoolmaster,” “disciplinarian.” Theological meaning: central to “The Law’s Purpose” doctrine — the law’s role was temporary, custodial, and preparatory, ending at Christ’s coming. Marathi: पालक (नियमशास्त्ररूपी पालक) (pālak — niyamśāstra-rūpī pālak) — Risk: High (new term, must be added to TM). Must not be equated with a Hindu guru or a Brahmin ritual authority figure (which would wrongly suggest ongoing, not temporary, authority), nor with a caste-based custodial role; the Greco-Roman household-custom background should be briefly explained in teaching notes.
- κληρονόμοι (klēronomoi) (3:29; also 4:1, 7) — “heirs.” Marathi: वारस (vāras) — Risk: Medium (new term). Connects to “Adoption and Sonship” doctrine.
- πάντες γὰρ υἱοὶ θεοῦ ἐστε διὰ τῆς πίστεως (3:26) — “for you are all sons of God, through faith.” Reuse son_of_god = देवाचा पुत्र (baseline Critical, singular/unique reference to Christ) — here used in the plural, corporate sense for believers. Marathi: तुम्ही सर्व विश्वासाद्वारे देवाचे पुत्र आहात (tumhī sarva viśvāsādvāre Devāce putra āhāt) — Risk: High. Requires very careful handling: believers’ adoptive, plural sonship (υἱοί, “sons of God” as many) must be kept doctrinally distinct from Christ’s unique, singular, eternal Sonship (ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ) even though both use the same underlying Marathi noun पुत्र; a translator note is required wherever both senses appear near each other (as in Gal. 3–4).
- ὅσοι γὰρ εἰς Χριστὸν ἐβαπτίσθητε, Χριστὸν ἐνεδύσασθε (3:27) — “as many as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” ἐβαπτίσθητε (ebaptisthēte) — Marathi: बाप्तिस्मा घेतला (bāptismā ghetalā) — established Marathi Christian term, Risk: Low. ἐνεδύσασθε (enedysasthe) — “put on/clothed yourselves with.” Marathi: ख्रिस्ताला परिधान केले (Khristālā paridhān kele) — Risk: Medium (new term, clothing metaphor for union with Christ).
- οὐκ ἔνι Ἰουδαῖος οὐδὲ Ἕλλην, οὐκ ἔνι δοῦλος οὐδὲ ἐλεύθερος, οὐκ ἔνι ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ (3:28) — “there is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, no male and female.” Reuse gentiles/unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine framework. Marathi: यहूदी व ग्रीक, दास व स्वतंत्र, पुरुष व स्त्री यांच्यात भेद नाही (Yahūdī va Grīk, dāsa va svatantra, puruṣ va strī yāṃcyāt bhed nāhī) — Risk: High. This unity formula has unusually direct resonance in Maharashtra, where the 1956 Ambedkarite Buddhist mass conversion was itself a decisive rejection of caste hierarchy; the phrase must retain its full, unqualified force (“no distinction,” reused from baseline’s universal_scope_of_gospel doctrine note) and never be softened to a merely spiritual-equality-with-social-hierarchy-intact reading.
Chapter 4 (Galatians 4:1–31)
- ἐπίτροποι καὶ οἰκονόμοι (4:2) — “guardians and managers.” Marathi: पालक आणि कारभारी (pālak āṇi kārbhārī) — Risk: Low-Medium (new terms, minor).
- τὸ πλήρωμα τοῦ χρόνου (4:4) — “the fullness of time.” Marathi: काळाची पूर्णता (kāḷācī pūrṇatā) — Risk: Medium (new term). Note reuse of काळ (not युग) per the ch.1 “present evil age” flag, keeping linear-time vocabulary consistent.
- ἐξαπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ, γενόμενον ἐκ γυναικός, γενόμενον ὑπὸ νόμον (4:4) — “God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law.” Reuse son_of_god (Critical) + incarnation = देहधारण (Critical) + law = नियमशास्त्र (High). This is Galatians’ own incarnation text, parallel in weight to Romans 1:3’s “seed of David according to the flesh”; the same CRITICAL cautions against अवतार and Bodhisattva-rebirth imagery apply here without modification.
- ἵνα τοὺς ὑπὸ νόμον ἐξαγοράσῃ, ἵνα τὴν υἱοθεσίαν ἀπολάβωμεν (4:5) — “to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.” Reuse redeem (Critical, ch.3 entry) + adoption = दत्तक पुत्रत्व (baseline High). This is Galatians’ key adoption text.
- ἐξαπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὰς καρδίας ἡμῶν, κρᾶζον· Ἀββά ὁ πατήρ (4:6) — reuse holy_spirit (Critical), abba = अब्बा (High), father = पिता (Critical). CONSISTENCY REQUIREMENT: this is a near-verbatim parallel to Romans 8:15; the Marathi rendering here must match Romans 8:15’s established form exactly.
- οὐκέτι εἶ δοῦλος ἀλλὰ υἱός· εἰ δὲ υἱός, καὶ κληρονόμος (4:7) — reuse slave = दास + heir = वारस + son_of_god/putra family. Risk: High (adoption doctrine core verse).
- ἐδουλεύσατε τοῖς φύσει μὴ οὖσι θεοῖς (4:8) — “you were enslaved to those who by nature are not gods.” Marathi: जे मुळात देव नाहीत अशांचे दास्य तुम्ही केले (je muḷāt dev nāhīt aśāṃce dāsya tumhī kele) — Risk: High. This verse directly names the situation of a reader converted from a polytheistic devotional background (Hindu iṣṭa-devatā worship, including Warkari devotion to Vitthal, or wider village/family deity practice). It must be handled with careful pastoral framing — the theological point (exclusive worship due to the one true God alone) must be preserved, but the presentation should avoid reductive or contemptuous language toward the reader’s own family and cultural history; teaching material should pair this with positive material on who God is (परमेश्वर), not lead with denunciation.
- τὰ ἀσθενῆ καὶ πτωχὰ στοιχεῖα (4:9; cf. 4:3) — “the weak and worthless elemental things/elemental spirits.” στοιχεῖα (stoicheia) — Literal: “basic components, elements” (of a system, an alphabet, or the physical world); range in Hellenistic usage extends to “elemental/rudimentary religious principles” or even personified cosmic/spiritual powers, debated among scholars. English variants: “elemental spirits,” “elemental principles,” “basic principles of the world,” “elements of the world.” Marathi: जगाची प्राथमिक तत्त्वे (jagācī prāthamik tattve) — Risk: High (new term). Requires a translator note on the interpretive range (calendar/law-observance systems vs. quasi-personal cosmic powers); of particular cultural relevance because Paul immediately illustrates this with calendar observance (4:10), a live parallel to Hindu religious-calendar practice.
- ἡμέρας παρατηρεῖσθε καὶ μῆνας καὶ καιροὺς καὶ ἐνιαυτούς (4:10) — “you observe days and months and seasons and years.” Marathi: तुम्ही दिवस, महिने, ऋतू आणि वर्षे पाळता (tumhī divas, mahine, ṛtū āṇi varṣe pāḷatā) — Risk: High. This has an unusually direct and specific parallel to Hindu panchāng (religious calendar) observance — auspicious dates, festival calendars, and astrological timing (jyotiṣa) are deeply embedded in everyday Marathi religious practice. This is one of the most culturally loaded verses in the letter for this audience and must be handled with a clear translator/teacher note: Paul’s concern is reverting to a system of religious-calendar observance as a basis for standing before God, not a blanket condemnation of marking time or celebrating festivals as such.
- τεκνία μου, οὓς πάλιν ὠδίνω (4:19) — “my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth.” ὠδίνω (ōdinō) — Literal: “to be in labor pains.” Marathi: प्रसववेदना सोसणे (prasavavedanā sosaṇe) — Risk: Low-Medium. Vivid maternal imagery for pastoral anguish; note its warmth, consistent with the pastoral-warmth guidance already established for Romans 8 and 12 material.
- μορφωθῇ Χριστὸς ἐν ὑμῖν (4:19) — “until Christ is formed in you.” Marathi: तुमच्यामध्ये ख्रिस्त आकार घेईपर्यंत (tumcyāmadhye Khrist ākār gheīparyanta) — Risk: Medium (new term).
- Ἁγὰρ (Hagar) / Σάρρα (Sarah) allegory (4:21–31) — ἀλληγορούμενα (allēgoroumena, 4:24) — “these things are being spoken allegorically.” Marathi: रूपकात्मक अर्थाने (rūpakātmak arthāne) — Risk: Low (new term, literary/hermeneutical). δύο διαθῆκαι (dyo diathēkai) — “two covenants.” Reuse covenant = करार (High). ἡ ἄνω Ἰερουσαλήμ (hē anō Ierousalēm, 4:26) — “the Jerusalem above.” Marathi: वरील/स्वर्गीय यरुशलेम (varīl / svargīya Yaruśalem) — Risk: Medium-High (new term). A heavenly, spiritual homeland distinct from the earthly city — teaching material should note (without forcing an equivalence) the structural parallel to how a devotional “spiritual homeland” functions in Warkari tradition (e.g., Pandharpur as the goal of the wārī pilgrimage), while making clear Paul’s “Jerusalem above” is an eschatological reality, not a pilgrimage destination.
- οὐκ ἐσμὲν παιδίσκης τέκνα ἀλλὰ τῆς ἐλευθέρας (4:31) — reuse slave = दास / free = स्वतंत्र (from ch.5 freedom root). Risk: High.
Chapter 5 (Galatians 5:1–26)
- Τῇ ἐλευθερίᾳ ἡμᾶς Χριστὸς ἠλευθέρωσεν· στήκετε οὖν καὶ μὴ πάλιν ζυγῷ δουλείας ἐνέχεσθε (5:1) — “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm, then, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Reuse freedom = स्वातंत्र्य (High, ch.2 entry). ζυγός (zygos) — Literal: “a yoke” (the wooden crossbar binding draft animals). Marathi: जू (jū) — Risk: High (new term, must be added to TM as दास्याचे जू / dāsyāce jū, “yoke of slavery”). Central image for the “Freedom in Christ” doctrine; the vivid agrarian metaphor (still culturally familiar in rural Maharashtra) should be preserved rather than replaced with an abstract paraphrase.
- περιτομή / περιτέμνησθε (5:2–3, 6, 11; also 2:3; 6:12–13, 15) — “circumcision.” Marathi: सुंता (suntā) — Risk: High (new term, must be added to TM; central to “Circumcision and the New Creation” doctrine). Particular note: in the contemporary Marathi/Indian cultural context, circumcision is most immediately associated with Islamic practice, not with any Hindu or Buddhist tradition. A modern reader may therefore read Galatians’ extended argument against circumcision as an implicit commentary on Islam rather than its actual first-century target (the Judaizing demand that Gentile converts adopt the Mosaic covenant sign). Teaching material must explicitly supply this historical-covenantal background so the doctrine is not misapplied as inter-religious polemic against a different faith community altogether.
- κατηργήθητε ἀπὸ Χριστοῦ…τῆς χάριτος ἐξεπέσατε (5:4) — “you are severed from Christ…you have fallen away from grace.” Marathi: तुम्ही ख्रिस्तापासून तुटला आहात…कृपेपासून दूर पडला आहात (tumhī Khristāpāsūn tuṭlā āhāt…kṛpepāsūn dūr paḍlā āhāt) — Risk: Critical (new phrase, paired with reused grace = कृपा). One of Galatians’ starkest warnings; must retain full force per the grace-merit escalation rule.
- ἐλπίδα δικαιοσύνης (5:5) — “the hope of righteousness.” Reuse righteousness = नीतिमत्त्व (Critical) + new hope = आशा (āśā) — Risk: Low-Medium.
- πίστις δι’ ἀγάπης ἐνεργουμένη (5:6) — “faith working through love.” Reuse faith = विश्वास (High). ἀγάπη (agapē) — Literal: “self-giving, committed love” (distinct from ἔρως/romantic desire or φιλία/friendship-affection). English variants: “love,” “charity” (older usage). Marathi: प्रीती (prīti) — Risk: High (new term, central to “Faith Working through Love” doctrine, must be added to TM). प्रीती/प्रेम are both live in Marathi devotional vocabulary; प्रीती is the more established choice in Marathi Bible tradition for agapē. Note the collision risk: Warkari bhakti tradition has its own rich vocabulary of premalakṣaṇā bhakti (love-characterized devotion) directed at Vitthal — teaching material should clarify that the love in view here is (a) God’s own self-giving love definitively shown at the cross (cf. 2:20) and (b) the believer’s resulting love for others flowing from faith, not primarily an emotional devotional experience directed at God.
- ζύμη (zymē) (5:9) — “leaven.” Marathi: खमीर (khamīr) — Risk: Low (new term, standard metaphor; brief explanation of the small-amount-affects-the-whole idiom may be needed).
- ὄφελον καὶ ἀποκόψονται (5:12) — “I wish those who unsettle you would even mutilate/cut themselves off.” Marathi: स्वतःला कापून घ्यावे असे मला वाटते (svataḥlā kāpūn ghyāve ase malā vāṭate) — Risk: Medium (new term). Harsh, ironic polemic; must preserve rhetorical force without seeming to literally endorse self-harm — a brief note on its ironic/hyperbolic character is advisable.
- ἐκλήθητε ἐπ’ ἐλευθερίᾳ…μὴ τὴν ἐλευθερίαν εἰς ἀφορμὴν τῇ σαρκί (5:13) — reuse called (High) + freedom (High) + flesh = देह (High, doctrinal sense begins here). Marathi: तुम्हांला स्वातंत्र्यासाठी बोलावले आहे…देहासाठी संधी म्हणून स्वातंत्र्य वापरू नका.
- διὰ τῆς ἀγάπης δουλεύετε ἀλλήλοις (5:13) — “through love, serve/be slaves to one another.” Note the deliberate Pauline irony: δουλεύω (“serve as a slave”) — the same root as δοῦλος/δουλεία used negatively elsewhere in the letter — is here repurposed positively as mutual, freely-chosen loving service. Marathi: प्रीतीने एकमेकांची सेवा करा (prītīne ekamekāṃcī sevā karā) — Risk: Medium. Translator note on the wordplay is valuable but not essential to convey the meaning.
- ὁ πᾶς νόμος ἐν ἑνὶ λόγῳ πεπλήρωται…ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν (5:14) — reuse law = नियमशास्त्र (High) + love = प्रीती (High, new). “Neighbor” — πλησίον (plēsion) — Marathi: शेजारी (śejārī) — Risk: Low.
- ἀλλήλους δάκνετε καὶ κατεσθίετε (5:15) — “biting and devouring one another.” Marathi: एकमेकांना चावता आणि खाता (ekamekāṃnā cāvatā āṇi khātā) — Risk: Low-Medium, vivid metaphor.
- πνεύματι περιπατεῖτε καὶ ἐπιθυμίαν σαρκὸς οὐ μὴ τελέσητε (5:16) — “walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.” Reuse holy_spirit (Critical, here abbreviated contextually as πνεῦμα referring to the Spirit’s guidance) + flesh = देह (High). ἐπιθυμία (epithymia) — Literal: “strong desire, craving, longing” (morally neutral term that takes on negative sense from context, “illicit desire/lust”). Marathi: वासना / इच्छा (vāsanā / icchā) — Risk: High (new term). वासना carries strong resonance with the Hindu puruṣārtha of kāma (desire, one of the four legitimate aims of life, but also the root of bondage in classical Hindu thought) and even more directly with the Buddhist concept of taṇhā/craving as the root cause of suffering (dukkha) in the Four Noble Truths. Rendering ἐπιθυμία with वासना risks importing either framework’s full soteriology (escape from desire itself as the path to liberation) rather than Paul’s specific claim (a conflict between two personal powers — flesh and the Spirit — resolved by the Spirit’s victory, not by extinguishing desire as such). इच्छा (more neutral “desire/wish”) is recommended with a qualifying phrase (देहाची इच्छा, “the flesh’s desire”) rather than वासना alone, and a translator note is required.
- ἡ γὰρ σὰρξ ἐπιθυμεῖ κατὰ τοῦ πνεύματος, τὸ δὲ πνεῦμα κατὰ τῆς σαρκός (5:17) — the central Flesh-versus-Spirit doctrinal statement. Risk: Critical. This verse is the doctrinal core of the “Flesh versus Spirit” doctrine and must be rendered with the two opposing subjects (देह, आत्मा/पवित्र आत्मा) unambiguously distinct and grammatically parallel.
- τὰ ἔργα τῆς σαρκός (5:19–21) — “the works of the flesh.” Marathi: देहाची कर्मे (dehācī karme) — Risk: High (new term). Deliberately parallel in construction to works of the law = नियमशास्त्राची कर्मे (both use कर्मे) — translators must ensure the two phrases remain visually and conceptually distinguishable in context, since they name two very different problems (legalism vs. moral corruption).
- Selected list items requiring individual note:
- εἰδωλολατρία (eidōlolatria) — “idolatry.” Marathi: मूर्तिपूजा (mūrtipūjā) — Risk: CRITICAL. This is arguably the single most culturally sensitive term-collision in the entire letter for a Marathi-speaking audience: मूर्तिपूजा (image/idol-worship) names, in ordinary usage, the central devotional practice of mainstream Hindu religion generally and of Warkari devotion to the Vitthal mūrti at Pandharpur specifically. The word itself cannot be avoided or substituted (it is the standard, correct rendering of εἰδωλολατρία), but curriculum material MUST supply extensive pastoral framing distinguishing (a) the theological point Paul is making — worship belongs to God alone, and misdirected worship corrupts moral life — from (b) any reading that treats this verse as a direct denunciation or mockery of the reader’s own family, community, or cultural heritage. Mandatory human theologian review.
- φαρμακεία (pharmakeia) — “sorcery.” Marathi: जादूटोणा (jādūṭoṇā) — Risk: High. Directly names a live category in contemporary Maharashtra religious and legal life (Maharashtra’s 2013 Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Act specifically targets जादूटोणा-related practices); this gives the term unusual real-world specificity and weight for this audience — a helpful point of contact, but one requiring careful, non-sensationalized framing.
- Remaining list items — ἔχθραι (enmity) = वैर, ἔρις (strife) = कलह, ζῆλος (jealousy) = मत्सर, θυμοί (fits of anger) = क्रोधाचे भर, ἐριθεῖαι (rivalries) = स्पर्धावृत्ती, διχοστασίαι (dissensions) = फूट, αἱρέσεις (divisions/factions) = गटबाजी, φθόνοι (envy) = हेवा, μέθαι (drunkenness) = मद्यपान, κῶμοι (orgies/revelries) = चैनबाजी — Risk: Low-Medium each, standard vocabulary, no major cross-religious collision beyond general moral vocabulary.
- Selected list items requiring individual note:
- ὁ καρπὸς τοῦ πνεύματος (5:22–23) — “the fruit of the Spirit.” Marathi: आत्म्याचे फळ (ātmyāce phaḷ) — Risk: High (new term, must be added to TM; core to the “Fruit of the Spirit” doctrine). Must reuse holy_spirit = पवित्र आत्मा (Critical) for “the Spirit” here, since context (contrasted with the flesh, and produced not achieved) makes clear this is the Holy Spirit’s own fruit, not a generic “spiritual” quality. Parallel risk to baseline’s spiritual_gifts note (आत्मिक कृपादान warns against सिद्धी): this fruit must be presented as the Spirit’s own organic produce in the believer, not a self-cultivated virtue attained through disciplined practice (as in the Buddhist Eightfold Path’s cultivation of right conduct, or Hindu yogic/ascetic attainment of virtue).
- The nine items: ἀγάπη (love) = प्रीती (High, see above); χαρά (joy) = आनंद (Low); εἰρήνη (peace) = शांती (reuse, Medium); μακροθυμία (patience/forbearance) = सहनशीलता (Low); χρηστότης (kindness) = दयाळूपणा (Low); ἀγαθωσύνη (goodness) = चांगुलपणा (Low); πίστις (here: faithfulness/reliability, not saving faith) = विश्वासूपणा (Medium — note this is a distinct sense of πίστις from “faith” proper, meaning trustworthy/reliable character; must not be confused with the doctrinal विश्वास though the root is shared); πραΰτης (gentleness) = सौम्यता (Low); ἐγκράτεια (self-control) = इंद्रियनिग्रह/आत्मसंयम (Medium — इंद्रियनिग्रह carries strong resonance with Hindu/Yogic ascetic sense-restraint discipline; आत्मसंयम is the safer, more neutral choice, with a note that this self-control is the Spirit’s fruit, not self-achieved ascetic mastery).
- οἱ τοῦ Χριστοῦ [Ἰησοῦ] τὴν σάρκα ἐσταύρωσαν σὺν τοῖς παθήμασιν καὶ ταῖς ἐπιθυμίαις (5:24) — “those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Reuse crucified (Critical, ch.2 root) + flesh (High) + desires (High, see above). πάθημα (pathēma) — “passion/suffering” here in the sense of “strong emotional impulse.” Marathi: विकार (vikār) — Risk: Medium (new term; minor resonance with Ayurvedic/yogic “vikāra” as bodily-emotional disorder, not a major doctrinal collision).
- εἰ ζῶμεν πνεύματι, πνεύματι καὶ στοιχῶμεν (5:25) — “if we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” Marathi: आपण आत्म्याने जगत असू, तर आत्म्याच्या मार्गदर्शनाप्रमाणे चालावे (āpaṇ ātmyāne jagat asū, tar ātmyācyā mārgadarśanāpramāṇe cālāve) — Risk: Medium (new idiom).
Chapter 6 (Galatians 6:1–18)
- ἐν πνεύματι πραΰτητος (6:1) — reuse fruit of the Spirit / gentleness vocabulary (High/Low).
- ἀλλήλων τὰ βάρη βαστάζετε, καὶ οὕτως ἀναπληρώσετε τὸν νόμον τοῦ Χριστοῦ (6:2) — “bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” βάρος (baros) — Literal: “a weight, a heavy load” (typically a burden too heavy to carry alone). Marathi: ओझे (oje) — Risk: Medium (new term, central to “Bearing One Another’s Burdens” doctrine). νόμος τοῦ Χριστοῦ (nomos tou Christou) — reuse law = नियमशास्त्र (High): ख्रिस्ताचे नियमशास्त्र (Khristāce niyamśāstra) — Risk: Medium. Note the doctrinal significance of mutual burden-bearing as a communal practice: this stands in an interesting and instructive contrast with the individual-responsibility logic of karma in popular Hindu/Buddhist thought (in which one’s own karmic burden cannot, in principle, be transferred to or shared by another) — teaching material may draw out this contrast positively as an illustration of grace-shaped community.
- ἕκαστος τὸ ἴδιον φορτίον βαστάσει (6:5) — “each will bear his own load.” φορτίον (phortion) — Literal: “a load, cargo” (a lighter, more neutral term than βάρος, typically referring to one’s own proper responsibility, e.g., a soldier’s pack or a ship’s cargo). Marathi: आपापला भार (āpāpalā bhār) — Risk: Low-Medium (new term). A translator note distinguishing this from βάρος/ओझे (6:2) is advisable: Paul’s wordplay contrasts a shared, voluntary burden (βάρος, communal support) with an unavoidable, personal load of accountability (φορτίον, individual responsibility before God) — using two different Marathi terms (ओझे vs. भार) helps preserve this distinction that would otherwise collapse if both were rendered identically.
- ὃ γὰρ ἐὰν σπείρῃ ἄνθρωπος, τοῦτο καὶ θερίσει (6:7) — “whatever one sows, that he will also reap.” Marathi: मनुष्य जे काही पेरतो तेच त्याला कापणीत मिळेल (manuṣya je kāhī pereto tec tyālā kāpaṇīt miḷel) — Risk: High (new term). This sowing-reaping proverb closely parallels the common Indian moral-proverb form of the karma principle (“as you sow, so shall you reap,” a phrase widely current in Marathi popular speech as well, e.g. “जसे कराल तसे भराल”). This resonance can be a genuine bridge for communication, but risks collapsing Paul’s specific point (the present, this-life moral consequence of habitually indulging the flesh versus habitually walking by the Spirit, within a framework of grace and a Spirit-given harvest of eternal life) into an impersonal, mechanistic, cross-lifetime karma-ledger. Teaching material must make the personal, relational, single-lifetime framing explicit.
- ὁ σπείρων εἰς τὴν σάρκα ἑαυτοῦ…ὁ δὲ σπείρων εἰς τὸ πνεῦμα…θερίσει ζωὴν αἰώνιον (6:8) — reuse flesh/Spirit (High/Critical). ζωὴ αἰώνιος (zōē aiōnios) — “eternal life.” Marathi: अनंतकाळचे जीवन (anantakāḷce jīvan) — Risk: High (new term). Must be presented as everlasting relational life granted by God through the Spirit, not as escape from a cycle of rebirth (moksha/mukti) nor as the cessation of craving (nirvāṇa) — the same category of caution already established for salvation = तारण in the baseline package applies here directly.
- μὴ ἐγκακῶμεν τὸ καλὸν ποιοῦντες…καιρῷ γὰρ ἰδίῳ θερίσομεν (6:9) — “let us not grow weary of doing good…for in due season we will reap.” Marathi: चांगले करण्यात कंटाळू नये…योग्य वेळी आपल्याला कापणी मिळेल (cāṅgale karaṇyāt kaṇṭāḷū naye…yogya veḷī āplyālā kāpaṇī miḷel) — Risk: Low-Medium.
- τοὺς οἰκείους τῆς πίστεως (6:10) — “the household of faith.” Marathi: विश्वासाचे कुटुंब (viśvāsāce kuṭumb) — Risk: Low-Medium (new term). Reuse faith = विश्वास (High) as root.
- πηλίκοις γράμμασιν (6:11) — “with what large letters.” Marathi: किती मोठ्या अक्षरांनी (kitī moṭhyā akṣarāṃnī) — Risk: Low, biographical/authenticating detail.
- εὐπροσωπῆσαι ἐν σαρκί…ἵνα τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ Χριστοῦ μὴ διώκωνται (6:12) — reuse flesh/circumcision/cross/persecute vocabulary. Risk: High (reuse cluster).
- οὔτε γὰρ περιτομή τι ἔστιν οὔτε ἀκροβυστία, ἀλλὰ καινὴ κτίσις (6:15) — “neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but a new creation.” καινὴ κτίσις (kainē ktisis) — Literal: “new creation/new creature.” Marathi: नवीन सृष्टी (navīn sṛṣṭī) — Risk: High (new term, must be added to TM; central to “Circumcision and the New Creation” doctrine). Distinct from Hindu cosmological creation-dissolution cycles (sṛṣṭi-pralaya) and from Buddhist teaching on impermanence (anicca): this is a decisive, once-for-all, forward-moving transformation accomplished in Christ, not a recurring cosmic cycle nor a philosophical observation about all conditioned things being transient. Parallel caution to baseline’s “fulfillment_of_prophecy” doctrine note on cyclic time.
- ὅσοι τῷ κανόνι τούτῳ στοιχήσουσιν, εἰρήνη ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς καὶ ἔλεος, καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰσραὴλ τοῦ θεοῦ (6:16) — “peace and mercy on all who walk by this rule, and upon the Israel of God.” Reuse peace = शांती (Medium) + israel = इस्राएल (Medium, baseline). ἔλεος (eleos) — “mercy.” Marathi: दया (dayā) — Risk: Low-Medium, standard term. κανών (kanōn) — “rule/standard.” Marathi: नियम/मापदंड (niyam/māpadaṇḍ) — Risk: Low. Ἰσραὴλ τοῦ θεοῦ (Israēl tou theou) — “the Israel of God.” Marathi: देवाचे इस्राएल (Devāce Isrāel) — Risk: High (new phrase-level term). This phrase carries genuine, unresolved interpretive debate (does it refer to believing Jews and Gentiles together as the true/spiritual Israel, or specifically to ethnic Israel within the church, or to ethnic Israel as a whole distinct from “all who walk by this rule”?). The Marathi rendering should remain literal and not silently resolve this debate; flag for mandatory human theologian review, and note sensitivity to contemporary geopolitical associations of the name “Israel” already flagged in the baseline package.
- τὰ στίγματα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἐν τῷ σώματι μου βαστάζω (6:17) — “I bear the marks of Jesus on my body.” στίγμα (stigma) — Literal: “a brand-mark” (commonly a mark burned/cut into a slave’s or soldier’s body denoting ownership). Marathi: येशूचे व्रण/खुणा (Yeśūce vraṇ/khuṇā) — Risk: Low-Medium (new term). Refers to Paul’s physical scars from persecution as marks of ownership by and service to Christ; minor note that this differs from later Catholic devotional “stigmata” phenomena and from Hindu sacred-mark practices (tilak), though no major doctrinal collision.
- ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μετὰ τοῦ πνεύματος ὑμῶν (6:18) — reuse grace = कृपा (Critical) + lord = प्रभू (Critical) + jesus = येशू (Critical) + christ = ख्रिस्त (Critical) + holy_spirit-adjacent “your spirit”. Closing benediction; must match the register and rendering pattern of other Pauline benedictions across the curriculum.
