Executive Summary — Revelation (प्रकटीकरण) Marathi Language Package
Why it matters
Revelation closes the biblical canon with the curriculum’s highest concentration of syncretism risk yet assembled for Marathi: apocalyptic worship scenes, a defeated-serpent antagonist, a corporate Bride, and a final judgment cosmology all sit directly on top of Maharashtra’s two dominant devotional frameworks — Warkari bhakti-Hindu image-worship and pilgrimage practice, and Navayana Buddhist rebirth/self-cultivation ethics — plus the specific, still-living historical memory of the 1956 Ambedkarite conversion away from caste-karma doctrine. Getting this book’s vocabulary wrong does not just blur meaning; it risks making Christ’s Lamb-worship read as one more bhakti devotion, the New Jerusalem’s Bride read as gopī-style personal romantic mysticism, “idolaters” read as a slur against Hindu neighbors, and final judgment read as one more turn of a karmic wheel this audience already explicitly rejected.
Key findings
- Full-book coverage confirmed. All 22 chapters were surveyed; only chapter 18 (beyond its one new phrase) introduces no new theological vocabulary and is explicitly marked reviewed, not omitted.
- 28 Revelation-specific doctrines now sit in the doctrine risk registry, of which 13 are Critical and 10 are High risk — a combined 23 doctrines mandating human theologian review, versus 4 requiring only native-speaker review and zero automated-only.
- 72 new theological terms were added to translation memory beyond the ~45 baseline Romans terms this book reuses, of which 15 are Critical and 27 are High risk (42 terms total requiring theologian-level scrutiny in Phase 2).
- The core passage (Revelation 21:1–8) sits at the intersection of more Critical-tier doctrines than any other passage in the book — New Heaven and New Earth, Church as Bride, Grace, Judgment/Vindication, Universal Accountability, Adoption, and Divine Election all converge there — confirming it as the correct theological anchor and the highest-priority review unit for Phase 2.
- Twelve distinct “crowded semantic neighborhoods” were identified where a natural-sounding Marathi word is already claimed by a specific competing tradition (worship vocabulary, serpent imagery, idol-worship vocabulary, bridal-devotional imagery, hell/afterlife cosmology, goddess imagery, self-attained-victory vocabulary, darśan/visionary vocabulary, sacred-water imagery, forehead-marking imagery, cosmic-cycle vocabulary, occult/esoteric vocabulary) — a materially larger fencing burden than the Romans baseline carried.
Risks
- मूर्तिपूजक (idolaters) is the single highest-risk term in the entire curriculum: in ordinary Marathi it names the devotional image-worship practiced by the majority of Maharashtra’s population, including at the Warkari tradition’s own Pandharpur shrine. Unqualified use anywhere in output would read as a communal condemnation rather than a theological category.
- वधू / कोकऱ्याचे लग्न (Bride / marriage of the Lamb) collides directly with Vaishnav/Krishna gopī-bride bhakti-mysticism; without constant corporate-Church framing, Revelation’s Bride risks being absorbed into an individual devotee’s private romantic-devotional register.
- सर्प / सैतान (serpent/Satan) collides with live Nag Panchami serpent-deity veneration; any unpaired occurrence of सर्प risks the antagonist reading as ambiguous or even benevolent.
- कृत्यांप्रमाणे न्याय (judged according to works, 20:12–13) is the book’s most politically sensitive doctrine-bridge point, given Ambedkarite Buddhist communities’ explicit, historically recent rejection of karma-ledger moral accounting.
- अग्नीचे सरोवर / दुसरे मरण (lake of fire / second death) has no structural equivalent in either source cosmology and cannot be merely fenced against नरक — it requires positive doctrinal construction in every teaching context.
Opportunities
- 22:4 (“they will see his face”) is the one place in the whole glossary where a Hindu-devotional resonance (दर्शन, the longing to see a deity face-to-face) can be used constructively rather than only defensively fenced — teaching this verse as the true, final, personal fulfillment of that universal longing is a genuine bridge, not just a risk to manage.
- Navayana Buddhism’s explicit rejection of karma-birth-status doctrine gives the “no distinction,” universal-scope language of 5:9, 7:9, and 14:6 unusually direct, affirming resonance for that audience once correctly anchored to a personal God rather than an impersonal liberation.
- The Warkari tradition’s own devotional intimacy vocabulary, while requiring careful fencing, gives this audience an existing appetite for vivid worship and doxological language that Revelation’s throne-room scenes (chs. 4–5, 19) can channel toward the Lamb once आराधना is firmly established as exclusive to God/the Lamb.
Recommended actions
- Route Revelation 21:1–8 in its entirety, plus every occurrence of the 15 Critical new terms and 14 baseline Critical terms, to mandatory theologian review in Phase 2 Step 17 — no exceptions, including repeat/previously-approved occurrences of the six highest-ranked crowded-neighborhood terms (मूर्तिपूजक; वधू/कोकऱ्याचे लग्न; सर्प/सैतान; अग्नीचे सरोवर/दुसरे मरण; कृत्यांप्रमाणे न्याय; आराधना).
- Attach the mandatory pastoral-framing note to every occurrence of मूर्तिपूजक and पशूची आराधना करणे before any segment is marked approved.
- Enforce the सर्प+सैतान pairing rule and the जिंकणारा+12:11-control-text pairing rule as automated pre-approval checks, not translator discretion.
- Carry forward all baseline Romans forbidden substitutions unchanged, and add the Revelation-specific forbidden list (नरक, सर्वशक्तिमान, पूजा/भजन, unqualified सर्प, unqualified पाताळ/यमलोक, दर्शन for the book’s own title-concept) to the same automated validation gate.
- Brief all Phase 2 theologian reviewers on the twelve crowded-semantic-neighborhood fencing rules before review begins, since this book’s risk profile is materially denser than Romans’ and reviewers accustomed to the Romans baseline should not assume equivalent risk levels transfer directly.
