Cross-Reference Analysis

Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis: 1 John — Pashto Destination Language

0. Methodology and Citation Normalization

Citation format. All Scripture references in this document use the normalized form Book Chapter:Verse (e.g., Genesis 15:6, Romans 3:25, 1 John 4:9), using standard English book names as the internal cross-reference key so Phase 2 tooling can match citations across curricula programmatically. At the point of destination-language rendering, book names follow established Pashto Bible convention per the baseline (12_ai_translation_requirements.md, Cross-Reference Preservation Rules): رومیان (Romans), پیدایښت (Genesis), زبور (Psalms), اشعیا (Isaiah), حبقوق (Habakkuk), یوئیل (Joel). New for this curriculum: John’s Gospel = یوحنا (Yuhanna); 1 John = ۱ یوحنا (short citation form) or, spelled out, د یوحنا لومړی مکتوب (da Yuhanna lumray maktub, “John’s First Letter”). This book-name pair should be added to the destination-language house style alongside the baseline’s existing book-name table before Phase 2 batch processing begins.

A note on 1 John’s citation profile. Unlike Romans, which repeatedly introduces direct OT quotations with formulas such as “as it is written” (γέγραπται) and anchors its argument in explicit citations from Genesis, Isaiah, Habakkuk, and the Psalms, 1 John contains no formally introduced OT quotation anywhere in its five chapters. Its scriptural connective tissue is entirely allusion, echo, and typology — most density concentrated in ch. 3’s Cain/Abel narrative and ch. 4-5’s echoes of the Exodus theophany tradition and Isaac/Abraham near-sacrifice narrative. This has a direct translation implication: where Romans segments require exact quotation-boundary fidelity to an OT source text, 1 John segments instead require the translator to recognize an allusion so its theological freight is not flattened into a merely literal, decontextualized reading. Each entry below records not only the connection but its type (Quotation / Allusion / Typology / Structural Parallel), since the review and footnoting requirements differ by type.

Relationship to the governing baseline. All term renderings below are Baseline TM reuse (§A of 08_core_glossary.md) or the newly proposed 1 John terms (§B of the same file). This document does not introduce any new term renderings; it only maps their scriptural connections and states consistency rules for shared quotations/echoes between 1 John and the Romans curriculum.

1. Cross-Reference Matrix

Chapter 1 (Prologue; Fellowship; Confession and Cleansing)

1 John PassageThemeRelated Character/FigureOT/NT ConnectionTypeTranslation Sensitivity
1 John 1:1Eyewitness testimony to the eternal WordThe Apostles; the incarnate WordJohn 1:1; John 1:14; Genesis 1:1; Luke 1:1-4Allusion (echo of Genesis 1:1 “in the beginning” and John 1:1-14)د ژوند کلام (Word of Life) shares its root with the Qur’anic Kalimatullah title (Qur’an 3:45, 4:171); the eternal, uncreated, embodied-and-touched claim of 1:1 (“heard…seen…touched”) must be explicitly asserted against that stripped-down Qur’anic sense. Critical.
1 John 1:2Manifestation of eternal lifeThe Father; the SonJohn 1:14; John 3:16Allusion/Structural Parallelښکاره کول (manifest) — Medium; standard revelation vocabulary.
1 John 1:3Fellowship (vertical) as goal of proclamationThe Father; the SonJohn 17:20-23 (unity/fellowship prayer)Structural Parallelملګرتیا (fellowship) — Baseline reuse; note vertical dimension here (with the Father and Son) complements Romans’ horizontal usage of κοινωνία (Romans 15:26).
1 John 1:5”God is light”Genesis 1:3 (“let there be light”); Psalm 27:1; Isaiah 60:19-20; James 1:17Allusion/Typologyرڼا (light) — Critical; parallel ontological-identity risk to 4:8’s “God is love.” Must not be flattened to “God gives light.”
1 John 1:7Cleansing by the blood of ChristJesus ChristLeviticus 17:11 (life is in the blood); Exodus 12:13 (Passover blood); Hebrews 9:22Typology (sacrificial blood)وینه (blood) — High/Critical; connects to Pashtunwali badal blood-debt logic (see doctrine map §5). Must be anchored explicitly to Christ’s once-for-all atoning death.
1 John 1:8-10Universal sinfulness; confessionPsalm 32:5; Psalm 51:1-4; Proverbs 28:13; Romans 3:23Structural Parallel to Romansګناه (sin), اقرار کول (confess) — direct doctrinal parallel to Romans’ universal_human_accountability doctrine (baseline risk: High). Rendering must stay identical to baseline sin entry (ګناه).

Chapter 2 (Advocate/Propitiation; Old/New Commandment; Antichrist)

1 John PassageThemeRelated Character/FigureOT/NT ConnectionTypeTranslation Sensitivity
1 John 2:1Christ as AdvocateJesus Christ (the Righteous)Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25; Hebrews 9:24Structural Parallelوکیل (advocate) — High, positive bridge to jirga/court-representative imagery; must exceed a human wakil’s contingent success (baseline intercession calibration note applies identically here).
1 John 2:2Propitiation for the whole worldJesus ChristIsaiah 53:6, 11-12 (Servant bears sin of many); Leviticus 16 (Day of Atonement); Romans 3:25 (ἱλαστήριον)Typology + direct doctrinal parallel to Romansد ګناهانو د بښنې قربانی — Critical; rendering-consistency rule required — see §4 below, since Romans 3:25 and 1 John 2:2/4:10 translate related-but-distinct Greek terms (ἱλαστήριον / ἱλασμός) that must read as the same doctrinal event in Pashto.
1 John 2:3-6Keeping commandments as evidence of knowing GodDeuteronomy 6:4-5; John 14:15, 21Structural Parallelپیژندل (know) — Medium; relational, not creedal-recitation knowledge (see baseline faith caution on Islamic six-pillars iman).
1 John 2:7-8Old and new commandment (love)Leviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor”); Deuteronomy 6:5; John 13:34Quotation-adjacent Allusion (Leviticus 19:18 is directly echoed, though not formally cited)حکم (commandment) — Medium; retain binding divine authority without collapsing into hukm shar’i legal categories.
1 John 2:15-17Do not love the worldJames 4:4; John 15:19Structural Parallelنړۍ (world, negative sense) — Medium-High; disambiguate from 4:9’s positive missional sense.
1 John 2:18-19, 22Antichrist; last hour; denial of the SonAntichrist(s)Daniel 7:25, 11:36; 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4; Matthew 24:24; Mark 13:22Typology/Structural Parallelضد مسیح (antichrist) — Critical; partial, carefully calibrated bridge to Islamic al-Dajjal (see doctrine map §5); denial of the Father-Son relation is the defining mark here, not Dajjal’s defining trait in Islamic tradition.
1 John 2:20, 27Anointing from the Holy OneThe Holy Spirit; believersPsalm 2:2 (the Anointed One); Isaiah 61:1; Joel 2:28; Acts 2:17Typologyمسح (anointing) — Critical; shares root with مسیح (Masih); must be distinguished from Christ’s unique Messianic anointing.
1 John 2:28Confidence at his coming (parousia)Jesus ChristMalachi 3:1-2; Matthew 24:30; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17Typology/Structural Parallelراتلل / بیا راتګ — Medium, positive bridge to Sunni expectation of Isa’s return (see doctrine map §7); content differs sharply (glorified divine Judge, not subordinate prophet).

1 John 3:4-5Sin defined as lawlessnessJesus Christ (sinless)Isaiah 53:9; Romans 7:7-12 (law and sin)Structural Parallelبې قانونی/سرغړونه (lawlessness) — Medium-High; must connect to, but stay distinct from, baseline’s Critical law (ناموس) entry; refers to God’s own moral order, not shari’a or Pashtunwali.
1 John 3:8, 10Works of the devil; children of the devilThe devil (serpent)Genesis 3:1-15 (the serpent); John 8:44Typology (Genesis 3 protoevangelium background)ابلیس/شیطان — Medium; sharp either-or dualism (of God / of the devil) must be preserved, not softened for comity.
1 John 3:12Cain and AbelCain; AbelGenesis 4:1-16 (direct narrative allusion)Allusion (near-quotation of the narrative, not verbatim text)قابیل/هابیل — Low, positive shared-name bridge (Qur’anic parallel narrative, Qur’an 5:27-31); moral point (murderous hatred as opposite of brotherly love) transfers cleanly.
1 John 3:13The world’s hatred of believersJohn 15:18-19Structural Parallelنفرت کول (hate) — Low-Medium.
1 John 3:16Christ laid down his lifeJesus ChristIsaiah 53:12; John 10:11, 15; John 15:13; Romans 5:8Typology + direct doctrinal parallel to Romansوینه/ژوند ورکول — High; same self-giving-love pattern as Romans 5:8, must render consistently (see §4).

1 John 4:8, 16”God is love”Exodus 34:6-7 (steadfast covenant love, ḥesed); Deuteronomy 7:7-8; John 3:16Allusion/Structural Parallelخدای مینه ده — Critical; ontological identity claim, parallel to “God is light” (1:5).
1 John 4:9God sent his only SonThe Father; the SonGenesis 22:2 (“your son, your only son”; Isaac typology); John 3:16-17Typology (Isaac as type of the beloved/only son given up) + Structural Parallelيوازینی زوی, لیږل — Critical; Isaac typology is a genuinely positive bridge (Abraham’s willingness to give his only son prefigures the Father’s actual giving of his) and should be taught explicitly as typology, not treated as a mere illustration.
1 John 4:10PropitiationJesus ChristLeviticus 16; Isaiah 53:10 (guilt offering); Romans 3:24-25Typology + direct Romans parallelد ګناهانو د بښنې قربانی — Critical; see §4 rendering-consistency rule with 2:2 and Romans 3:25.

1 John 4:14Jesus, Savior of the worldJesus ChristIsaiah 43:11; Isaiah 45:21; John 4:42Structural Parallelنجات ورکوونکی — Critical; extends baseline salvation; distinguish from Islamic eschatological Mahdi/prophet-savior expectation.
1 John 4:15Confession: Jesus is the Son of GodJesus ChristRomans 10:9-10 (“Jesus is Lord… believe… confess”)Direct doctrinal/structural parallel to Romans’s salvation-confession verseد خدای زوی, اقرار کول — Critical; this is 1 John’s structural counterpart to Romans 10:9 — see §4 for the required consistency rule between these two confession formulas.
1 John 4:17-18Confidence at the day of judgment; fear cast outProverbs 1:33; Isaiah 41:10; Romans 8:1, 15, 31-39 (assurance)Direct doctrinal parallel to Romans assurance_of_salvationډاډ/زړورتوب, د محاکمې ورځ, وېره — Critical/High; direct extension of baseline’s assurance-of-salvation collision with Islamic deeds-weighing uncertainty before Yawm al-Qiyamah.
1 John 4:19We love because he first loved usDeuteronomy 7:7-8; Romans 5:8Direct doctrinal parallel to Romansلومړی (first) — Low term-risk, high theological load; reinforces baseline grace one-directional-gift teaching against melmastia reciprocity default.
1 John 4:20-21Loving God and hating a brotherJames 1:26-27; James 2:14-17Structural Parallelورور, درغلی — High/Low-Medium.

1 John 5:4-5Overcoming the world by faithJohn 16:33; Romans 8:37Direct doctrinal parallel to Romansبریالیتوب/نیول, ایمان — High; must be taught as moral/spiritual victory, never territorial/political conquest (see doctrine map §7).
1 John 5:6-8Water, blood, and Spirit — threefold witnessJesus ChristJohn 19:34-35 (blood and water from Christ’s side); Zechariah 12:10 (“look on me whom they have pierced”); John 7:38-39 (Spirit as living water)Typology + near-Quotation (John 19:34-35)اوبه او وینه, شاهدي — High; requires explanatory framing (ministry inauguration / atoning death); flag textual-basis question re: the “heavenly witnesses” gloss (5:7b-8a in some manuscript traditions, the Comma Johanneum) for house-style confirmation before translation.

3. Typology Table

Type/Shadow (OT)Fulfillment/Reality (1 John)Passage PairTranslation Note
Passover lamb’s blood applied to protect from judgment (Exodus 12:13)Christ’s blood cleanses from sin (1 John 1:7)Exodus 12:13 → 1 John 1:7وینه must never be flattened into a purely ritual-cleansing (پاکوالی-style) reading; anchor explicitly to Christ’s atoning death.
Day of Atonement sacrifice covering Israel’s sin (Leviticus 16)Christ as ἱλασμός/propitiation for the whole world (1 John 2:2; 4:10)Leviticus 16 → 1 John 2:2, 4:10Reinforce the once-for-all, God-initiated nature against both كفاره’s repeatable-human-act sense and Pashtunwali badal’s cyclical retaliation logic.
Serpent’s deception and enmity in Eden (Genesis 3:1-15)The devil’s ongoing opposition; “children of the devil” (1 John 3:8-10)Genesis 3:15 → 1 John 3:8ابلیس/شیطان — retain the sharp two-family dualism; do not soften into a merely psychological “temptation” concept.
Cain’s murder of his brother Abel (Genesis 4:1-16)The behavioral test of false claimed love for God (1 John 3:12)Genesis 4:8 → 1 John 3:12قابیل/هابیل — positive shared-narrative bridge; retain moral force.
Abraham’s only son offered in obedience (Genesis 22:2)God’s own giving of his only Son (1 John 4:9)Genesis 22:2 → 1 John 4:9يوازینی زوی — teach explicitly as typology: what Abraham was spared from completing, the Father himself completed.
Moses barred from seeing God’s face (Exodus 33:18-23)No one has seen God, but the Son has made him known (1 John 4:12; cf. John 1:18)Exodus 33:20 → 1 John 4:12Frame as complementary, not contradictory, with 1 John 1:1-3’s eyewitness-of-the-incarnate-Son claim.
Water from the rock in the wilderness (Exodus 17:6) / Spirit poured out (Joel 2:28)Water, blood, and Spirit testifying to the Son (1 John 5:6-8)Exodus 17:6; Joel 2:28 → 1 John 5:6-8اوبه او وینه — anchor to the historical crucifixion scene (John 19:34), not abstract ritual elements.

4. Parallels to the Romans Curriculum and Rendering-Consistency Rules

Because both curricula are governed by the same Pashto Language Package, the following table identifies every point where 1 John and Romans address materially the same doctrine, term family, or confession formula. These pairings require identical or deliberately harmonized Pashto phrasing across both curricula, per the baseline’s own “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents.”

Shared Doctrine/FormulaRomans Locus1 John LocusConsistency Rule
Propitiation/atoning sacrificeRomans 3:24-25 (ἱλαστήριον)1 John 2:2; 4:10 (ἱλασμός)Rule 1: Though the underlying Greek terms differ slightly, both must be rendered so a Pashto reader recognizes the same doctrinal event. Recommend consistent use of د ګناهانو د بښنې قربانی (or an agreed short form) in both curricula, paired every time with the nanawatai-bridge caveat already fixed in the baseline system prompt (Rule 3). Do not introduce a second, unrelated phrase for Romans 3:25.
Salvation-confession formulaRomans 10:9-10 (“Jesus is Lord… believe… confess… saved”) — rendered عیسی خداوند دی1 John 4:15 (“confesses that Jesus is the Son of God”) — د خدای زوی اقرار کولRule 2: These are two distinct but complementary confession formulas (Lordship in Romans, Sonship in 1 John), not variants of one formula. Do not merge or substitute one for the other; teach them side by side as the letter’s own version of Romans’ salvation-confession centrality. Both must remain verbatim-consistent within their own curriculum per the baseline’s own rule for Romans 10:9-10.
Adoption / new birth into God’s familyRomans 8:15, 23 (υἱοθεσία, legal-adoption sense) — زوی نیول1 John 3:1-2, 9-10; 4:7; 5:1 (γεννάω/τέκνα θεοῦ, birth/begetting sense) — له خدای زیږیدلی / د خدای بچیانRule 3: Teach explicitly as two complementary NT term-families describing the same reality from different angles (legal standing vs. birth/new nature) — never present one as contradicting or replacing the other. Both collide with Qur’an 112:3’s “he does not beget” and must be corrected identically wherever they occur.
Assurance of salvation before final judgmentRomans 8:1, 15, 31-391 John 4:17-18; 5:13Rule 4: Both passages combat the same Islamic-piety default (confident assurance of one’s own final salvation viewed as presumptuous under a deeds-weighing framework before Yawm al-Qiyamah). Use parallel explanatory framing across both curricula: assurance is grounded in Christ’s finished work and God’s own testimony, never in self-merit.
IncarnationRomans 1:3; 8:31 John 4:2-3Rule 5: Both passages must use تجسد supplemented by the periphrastic form (e.g., خدای انسان شو / عیسی مسیح چې په بشري بدن راغلی) at first occurrence in each curriculum, per the baseline’s own recommendation that a noun-only rendering is insufficient given Pashto’s thin precedent for this doctrine.
God’s initiating, one-directional love/graceRomans 5:8; 11:5-6 (grace ≠ merit)1 John 4:10, 19Rule 6: Preserve the “he first” (لومړی) priority language consistently; never allow either curriculum’s phrasing to suggest a reciprocity-creating gift under the melmastia hospitality-code default already flagged in the baseline.
Sin as universal, personal transgression before GodRomans 1:18-3:20; 3:231 John 1:8-10; 3:4Rule 7: ګناه must remain the sole rendering across both curricula; do not introduce a synonym in 1 John’s confession context.
Testimony/witness vocabularyRomans (implicit; Paul’s apostolic testimony)1 John 1:2; 4:14; 5:6-11Rule 8: شاهدي ورکول/شاهدي must retain the eyewitness/evidentiary sense in both curricula and must never drift toward a shahada-style creedal-recitation sense, consistent with baseline cautions on “faith” and “apostle.”
Deity of Christ, unqualifiedRomans 9:5 (“God over all”)1 John 5:20 (“the true God”)Rule 9: Both are among the most direct unqualified deity-of-Christ statements in the NT; render both with equal directness (ریښتینی خدای here; baseline’s established Romans 9:5 phrasing there) — neither may be softened for comity.
Christ’s ongoing intercessionRomans 8:341 John 2:1Rule 10: منځګړیتوب (Romans) and وکیل (1 John) name the same ministry from two angles (heavenly intercession; courtroom advocacy). Teach as complementary; retain the calibration caveat (infinite/certain efficacy, unlike a human mediator or advocate) in both.
Law / lawlessnessRomans 2:12-29; 7:7-12 (νόμος) — ناموس1 John 3:4 (ἀνομία) — بې قانونی/سرغړونهRule 11: Distinguish 1 John’s “lawlessness” (disregard for God’s moral order generally) from Romans’ technical “the Law” (the Mosaic Torah) so the two are not conflated; both, however, must be kept equally distinct from shari’a and Pashtunwali per the baseline’s law caution.
Overcoming/victoryRomans 8:37 (“more than conquerors”)1 John 5:4-5Rule 12: Both must be taught as moral/spiritual victory secured through Christ/faith, explicitly not territorial, political, or violent conquest — echoing the baseline’s own caution on kingdom_of_god against “Islamic Emirate” political-sovereignty framing.

5. Chapters Reviewed with No Additional Cross-Reference Load

Every chapter of 1 John (1-5) contains cross-reference-bearing material and is represented in §1 above; no chapter is without documented OT/NT connections. This section is included per the full-book-coverage mandate to confirm explicitly that no chapter was silently skipped.

This document extends, and must never contradict, the baseline Romans Language Package and analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md / analysis/08_core_glossary.md. See analysis/10_biblical_theme_map.md for the letter’s full theme-structure analysis.
