Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: 3 John — English → Pashto
Purpose
This document provides the full doctrine matrix for the entire book of 3 John (1:1–14), extending the baseline Romans doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions to this curriculum. It is the doctrine-level companion to analysis/08_core_glossary.md (term-level) and is fully consistent with the accompanying assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json for this book: same eight doctrines, same names, same risk tiers, same review routing. No doctrine, risk tier, or routing decision in this document contradicts that registry.
Full-Book Coverage Statement
3 John is a single chapter of 14 verses, and the core passage (3 John 1:1–14) is therefore coextensive with the entire book. There is no chapter beyond the core passage to survey separately. To satisfy the PRD’s full-book coverage mandate in a book with no additional chapters, this analysis instead walks the full verse range (vv. 1–14) explicitly below, confirming that every verse has been reviewed for doctrinal load — not merely the verses that happen to anchor a named doctrine.
| Verse(s) | Content | Doctrinal load? | Disposition |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | Greeting; the Elder to Gaius, “whom I love in truth” | Yes | Authority of Apostolic Eldership; Truth and Christian Fellowship |
| 1:2 | Prayer for Gaius’s health “as your soul is getting along well” | Yes | Spiritual Fatherhood and Discipleship |
| 1:3–4 | Joy at reports of Gaius “walking in the truth”; “my children” | Yes | Truth and Christian Fellowship; Spiritual Fatherhood and Discipleship; Commendation of Faithful Witness (testimony language begins here) |
| 1:5–8 | Commendation of Gaius’s hospitality to traveling brothers and strangers; sent out “for the sake of the Name”; accepting nothing from pagans; “fellow workers for the truth” | Yes | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers; Missionary Authority in the Name of Christ |
| 1:9–10 | Diotrephes: loves to be first, refuses the Elder, malicious gossip, forbids others, expels believers from the church | Yes | Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes) |
| 1:11 | ”Do not imitate what is evil but what is good”; “whoever does good is from God” | Yes | Imitating Good rather than Evil |
| 1:12 | Demetrius commended; “testified to by everyone and by the truth itself” | Yes | Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius); Truth and Christian Fellowship |
| 1:13–14 | Closing: much to write, hope to see Gaius face to face; “Peace to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends, each by name.” | Yes | Truth and Christian Fellowship (brothers→friends register shift); epistolary peace (baseline سوله reuse, adapted context) |
Conclusion: every verse of the book has been reviewed. No verse is doctrinally inert; each has been assigned to at least one of the eight doctrines analyzed below. Nothing is silently omitted.
Doctrine Matrix
Risk tiers, doctrine identifiers, and pashto_doctrine_name values below are copied verbatim from assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json to guarantee consistency. “Translation risk” summarizes the specific, grounded collision reason from that registry in prose form for reviewer use.
1. Authority of Apostolic Eldership
- Registry key:
authority_of_apostolic_eldership - Pashto doctrine name: د رسولي مشرتوب واک
- Risk level: High
- Key terms: elder, the elder, beloved
- Supporting passages (3 John): 1:1
- Translation risk: مشر (mashar) is the exact native Pashto word for a Pashtunwali tribal/jirga chieftain or family patriarch — an office carrying binding customary legal authority, typically inherited by lineage or status. Left bare, “the Elder” risks importing hereditary or binding-arbitration authority onto a pastoral, service-oriented church office. Must always appear qualified at first use as “د کلیسا مشر” (the elder of the church) to block this default reading.
- Review routing: Human theologian
2. Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
- Registry key:
hospitality_to_traveling_ministers - Pashto doctrine name: سفري خادمینو ته مېلمه پالنه
- Risk level: High
- Key terms: stranger, guest, send on their way, support, fellow worker, ought
- Supporting passages (3 John): 1:5, 1:6, 1:7, 1:8
- Translation risk: مېلمه (“guest”) is the operative term of Pashtunwali’s melmastia hospitality code — already flagged in the baseline’s “grace” entry as reciprocity-creating, since a host customarily gains honor and expects future repayment or alliance from a guest. 3 John commends hosting people who offer NO possible social repayment (v.7 notes they take nothing even from outsiders). This is the same theological tension already documented for grace and must be taught explicitly: gospel hospitality strips melmastia of its honor-reciprocity expectation, rendered “worthily of God” (د خدای وړ ډول) rather than for tribal or personal gain.
- Review routing: Human theologian
3. Missionary Authority in the Name of Christ
- Registry key:
missionary_authority_and_the_name_of_christ - Pashto doctrine name: د مسیح نوم د ماموریت اختیار
- Risk level: High
- Key terms: the Name, went out for the sake of the Name, pagans, accepting nothing from unbelievers
- Supporting passages (3 John): 1:7
- Translation risk: The absolute, unqualified early-church usage “the Name” (= Christ’s name, invoked as the authority and honor for which missionaries travel) risks being read against the vast Islamic devotional category of asma al-husna, the 99 Names of Allah, if left unglossed. Must always render explicitly as “د عیسی مسیح د نوم لپاره.” The verse’s ἐθνικός (“pagans/unbelieving outsiders”) is a distinct sense from Romans’ ἔθνη (Gentiles); mechanically reusing the baseline’s غیر یهودیان would wrongly import the Jew/Gentile redemptive-historical category, while the more available cognate کافر carries severe real-world safety danger for this persecuted readership if the material is discovered by hostile parties.
- Review routing: Human theologian
4. Imitating Good rather than Evil
- Registry key:
imitating_good_rather_than_evil - Pashto doctrine name: د ښه پیروي، د بد نه ډډه
- Risk level: High
- Key terms: imitate, do not imitate what is evil but what is good, of God, has not seen God
- Supporting passages (3 John): 1:11
- Translation risk: The tempting cognate تقلید (taqlid) is the specific Islamic jurisprudential term for unreasoned adoption of a jurist’s ruling without independent reasoning (the classical opposite of ijtihad); using it would reframe personal moral emulation of a good example as submission to authoritative religious precedent instead of Paul-style character imitation. Native پیروي کول must be used instead, consistent with the baseline’s established pattern of preferring native terms over doctrinally-loaded Islamic-jurisprudence loanwords (cf. ناموس over شریعت; ملګرتیا over شراکت).
- Review routing: Human theologian
5. Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
- Registry key:
church_leadership_and_pride_diotrephes - Pashto doctrine name: د کلیسا مشرتوب او تکبر (دیوترفیس)
- Risk level: High
- Key terms: loves to be first, does not accept us, gossiping with malicious words, forbids, puts them out of the church
- Supporting passages (3 John): 1:9, 1:10
- Translation risk: The book’s central negative example — church leadership corrupted by self-exalting ambition and abuse of authority rather than service. Must be taught carefully against a cultural backdrop where status-seeking through generosity, leadership, and public honor is often positively regarded within Pashtunwali’s nang (honor) code; the text specifically condemns self-exalting control WITHIN the believing community, not status-seeking generally. The passage’s climax — expulsion from the church (ἐκβάλλω) — carries especially severe real-world stakes for this readership: for a persecuted, often secret house-church minority, the local congregation may be a believer’s only safe community and support network, so abusive expulsion is a far graver danger here than in settings with multiple accessible congregations.
- Review routing: Human theologian
6. Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius)
- Registry key:
commendation_of_faithful_witness_demetrius - Pashto doctrine name: د باوري شاهد ستاینه (دیمتریوس)
- Risk level: Critical
- Key terms: testimony, testify, true, everyone, the truth itself
- Supporting passages (3 John): 1:3, 1:6, 1:12
- Translation risk: μαρτυρέω/μαρτυρία occurs three times in this single short letter and forms this doctrine’s core. The obvious Perso-Arabic cognate cluster شهادت/شهيد is exceptionally dangerous: شهادت is the technical Islamic term for both the Shahada (the core creedal confession “there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger”) and for religious/jihadi martyrdom; شهيد specifically means “martyr,” a highly charged regional political-religious term. Rendering ordinary Christian character-testimony with either risks (a) implying invocation of the Islamic creed, and (b) in a persecution context, dangerously suggesting the vocabulary of religious martyrdom. The more neutral courtroom/daily-use noun شاهدي must be used at every occurrence without exception — arguably the single sharpest collision risk of any term identified across this entire pipeline to date, given it collides with the majority religion’s own core creedal confession structure.
- Review routing: Human theologian
7. Truth and Christian Fellowship
- Registry key:
truth_and_christian_fellowship - Pashto doctrine name: رښتیا او مسیحي ملګرتیا
- Risk level: High
- Key terms: truth, walking in truth, love, brothers, friends, church, fellow worker for the truth
- Supporting passages (3 John): 1:1, 1:3, 1:4, 1:6, 1:8, 1:12, 1:14
- Translation risk: ἀλήθεια (6 occurrences — the highest concentration of any NT book) must avoid حقیقت, which carries Sufi four-stage-path (Shari’a-Tariqa-Haqiqat-Ma’rifat) mystical overtones of an esoteric reality reserved for advanced initiates, rather than 3 John’s shared, public, morally-binding truth; use native رښتیا throughout. The letter’s kinship vocabulary (ἀδελφός, “brother”) carries strong Pashtunwali blood-tribe/qawm solidarity connotations and must be taught as kinship constituted by shared faith in Christ, not lineage — directly tied to the baseline’s “Christian Identity in Christ” doctrine. The deliberate Greek shift from “brothers” to the more intimate “friends” (φίλος) at the letter’s close must also be preserved, not collapsed into one Pashto word.
- Review routing: Human theologian
8. Spiritual Fatherhood and Discipleship
- Registry key:
spiritual_fatherhood_and_discipleship - Pashto doctrine name: روحاني پلرتوب او پیروتوب
- Risk level: Medium
- Key terms: my children, walking in truth, greater joy, soul prospers
- Supporting passages (3 John): 1:2, 1:4
- Translation risk: The Elder’s “children” are spiritual disciples, not biological or legally-adopted offspring; the term must be qualified as روحاني اولاد (spiritual children) so it is not confused with the baseline’s Critical-risk “adoption” doctrine (which concerns full legal inheritance status) or with Pashtun patrilineal descent categories. Gaius’s inner “soul”-condition (ψυχή) must also be kept distinct from روح القدس (Holy Spirit) by using ساه/رواني حالت rather than روح alone.
- Review routing: Native speaker review

Relationship to Baseline Romans Doctrines
Several 3 John doctrines directly extend baseline Romans doctrines and must be taught in continuity with them, not as unrelated new categories:
- Truth and Christian Fellowship extends baseline “Christian Identity in Christ” (kinship in Christ over tribal/qawm identity) and baseline “Christian Fellowship” (ملګرتیا, never شراکت).
- Hospitality to Traveling Ministers extends the baseline “Grace” doctrine’s melmastia-reciprocity caution — the same cultural mechanism, now applied to hospitality rather than salvation-by-gift.
- Spiritual Fatherhood and Discipleship must be kept distinct from baseline “Adoption into God’s Family” (Critical) — spiritual discipleship language here is pastoral, not a claim of inheritance-bearing legal sonship.
- Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes) and Authority of Apostolic Eldership extend baseline “Church as God’s People” (Critical) — both assume the same dispersed, often secret house-church context documented in the baseline registry.
- Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius) has no direct baseline Romans counterpart but shares the baseline’s general methodology of preferring native/neutral vocabulary over Islamic-loaded cognates (cf. باseline’s ناموس over شریعت, ملګرتیا over شراکت) — here applied to شاهدي over شهادت/شهيد.
This document, together with analysis/08_core_glossary.md and assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json, constitutes the complete Phase 1 doctrine-analysis deliverable for 3 John and is ready to feed the Phase 2 AI Translation Requirements extension (Step 5).
This analysis extends, and does not contradict, the baseline Pashto Romans Language Package. All risk tiers and routing decisions are identical to those recorded in assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json for this curriculum.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius)
Pashto name: د باوري شاهد ستاینه (دیمتریوس)
Key terms: testimony, testify, true, everyone, the truth itself
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: μαρτυρέω/μαρτυρία occurs three times in this single short letter and forms this doctrine’s core. The obvious Perso-Arabic cognate cluster شهادت/شهيد is exceptionally dangerous: شهادت is the technical Islamic term for both the Shahada (the core creedal confession ‘there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger’) and for religious/jihadi martyrdom; شهيد specifically means ‘martyr,’ a highly charged regional political-religious term. Rendering ordinary Christian character-testimony with either risks (a) implying invocation of the Islamic creed, and (b) in a persecution context, dangerously suggesting the vocabulary of religious martyrdom. The more neutral courtroom/daily-use noun شاهدي must be used at every occurrence without exception - arguably the single sharpest collision risk of any term identified across this entire pipeline to date, given it collides with the majority religion’s own core creedal confession structure.
High Risk Doctrines
Authority of Apostolic Eldership
Pashto name: د رسولي مشرتوب واک
Key terms: elder, the elder, beloved
Review routing: Human theologian
مشر (mashar) is the exact native Pashto word for a Pashtunwali tribal/jirga chieftain or family patriarch, an office carrying binding customary legal authority inherited by status or lineage. The Elder’s pastoral authority in 3 John must be explicitly distinguished from this tribal governance pattern - it is a recognized, relational, service-oriented church office, never a bare jirga-style title, and must always appear qualified as ‘د کلیسا مشر’ at first use so readers do not import hereditary or binding-arbitration expectations onto it.
Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Pashto name: سفري خادمینو ته مېلمه پالنه
Key terms: stranger, guest, send on their way, support, fellow worker, ought
Review routing: Human theologian
مېلمه (guest) is the operative term of Pashtunwali’s melmastia hospitality code, the same institution flagged in the baseline’s ‘grace’ entry as reciprocity-creating - a host customarily gains honor and expects future repayment or alliance from a guest. 3 John commends hosting people who offer NO possible social repayment (v.7 - they take nothing even from outsiders). This is the same theological tension already documented for grace and must be taught explicitly: gospel hospitality strips melmastia of its honor-reciprocity expectation, rendered ‘worthily of God’ rather than for tribal or personal gain.
Missionary Authority in the Name of Christ
Pashto name: د مسیح نوم د ماموریت اختیار
Key terms: the Name, went out for the sake of the Name, pagans, accepting nothing from unbelievers
Review routing: Human theologian
The absolute, unqualified early-church usage ‘the Name’ (= Christ’s name, invoked as the authority and honor for which missionaries travel) risks being read against the vast Islamic devotional category of asma al-husna, the 99 Names of Allah, if left unglossed. It must always be rendered explicitly as ‘د عیسی مسیح د نوم لپاره.’ The verse’s related term ἐθνικός (‘pagans/unbelieving outsiders’) is also a distinct sense from Romans’ ἔθνη (Gentiles); mechanically reusing the baseline’s غیر یهودیان would wrongly import the Jew/Gentile redemptive-historical category, and the more available cognate کافر carries severe real-world safety danger for this persecuted readership if the material is discovered by hostile parties.

Spiritual Fatherhood and Discipleship
Pashto name: روحاني پلرتوب او پیروتوب
Key terms: my children, walking in truth, greater joy, soul prospers

The Elder’s ‘children’ are spiritual disciples, not biological or legally-adopted offspring; the term must be qualified as روحاني اولاد (spiritual children) so it is not confused with the baseline’s Critical-risk ‘adoption’ doctrine (which concerns full legal inheritance status) or with Pashtun patrilineal descent categories. Gaius’s inner ‘soul’-condition (ψυχή) must also be kept distinct from روح القدس (Holy Spirit) by using ساه/رواني حالت rather than روح alone.
