Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis: Jude (Greek Original) → Pashto

Book Overview and Coverage Note

Jude is a single-chapter epistle of 25 verses in Koine Greek. Because the entire book is one chapter, the PRD’s “every chapter first to last” mandate and the “core passage gets verse-by-verse treatment” mandate converge almost completely: the core passage (Jude 1:3-23) comprises 21 of the book’s 25 verses. Part 1 below gives full verse-by-verse treatment of the core passage (vv.3-23). Part 2 completes full-book coverage by treating the two remaining sections of Chapter 1 not covered by the core passage — the salutation (vv.1-2) and the closing doxology (vv.24-25) — with the same field structure, so that literally every verse of the book has received load-bearing-term analysis. No verse of Jude is silently omitted.

Author: Jude (Ἰούδας), likely half-brother of Jesus and brother of James, writing to a general/circular audience of Jewish-and-Gentile believers facing infiltration by false teachers. Jude shares extensive material with 2 Peter 2 and quotes non-canonical Jewish material (1 Enoch, and likely the Assumption of Moses tradition in v.9) — a distinct translation/doctrinal issue flagged at v.9 and v.14 below.

Established Romans-baseline renderings are reused verbatim throughout: انجیل (gospel — not used in Jude), فضل (grace), ایمان (faith), مقدسان (saints), مقدس (holy), روح القدس (Holy Spirit), خداوند (Lord), عیسی (Jesus), مسیح (Christ/Messiah), خدای (God), رسول (apostle), جلال (glory), سوله (peace), ګناه (sin), بلل شوی (called), موسی (Moses), آمین (Amen).

PART 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse Analysis (Jude 1:3-23)

Jude 1:3

σωτηρίαsōtēriadeliverance, rescuerescue from danger; specifically eschatological deliverance from God’s wrathsalvation, deliveranceThe “common salvation” shared by all believers, already established doctrine now under threat from false teachersنجات (reuse baseline TM). Risk Critical (inherited from baseline) — must not be read as this-worldly rescue.
ἐπαγωνίζομαιepagōnizomaito struggle/fight upon, to contend earnestly (athletic/combat metaphor, intensified form of ἀγωνίζομαι)vigorous, effortful struggle in a contest; used of athletic and military exertioncontend, strive, fight earnestlyBelievers must actively, energetically defend revealed doctrine against corruption — not passive assentمبارزه کول (mubaraza kawul). Risk High. رejected: جهاد کول (jihad kawul) — carries the specific Islamic holy-war/armed-struggle connotation and must never be used; مبارزه is the safer general “contend/struggle” word used in secular and sports contexts.
ἅπαξ παραδοθείσῃhapax paradotheisēhaving been handed down once (for all)a completed, unrepeatable, authoritative act of transmission”once for all delivered,” “once entrusted”The apostolic faith is a fixed, closed deposit, not evolving revelation — direct tension with the regional naskh (abrogation) expectation that later revelation supersedes earlierRender as یو ځل لپاره ورکړل شوی (yau zal lapara warkraly shaway, “given once for all”). Risk High — must be paired with explicit teaching against abrogation-style thinking (cf. baseline “fulfillment_of_prophecy” doctrine note).
πίστιςpististrust, that which is believedsubjective trust; here objective — the body of belief entrusted to the church”the faith,” “faith”Not merely personal trust (as elsewhere in Romans) but the content of apostolic doctrine, a closed deposit to be defendedایمان (reuse baseline TM), but flagged here in its objective, doctrinal-content sense (“the faith”) rather than its usual subjective-trust sense. Risk High — translators must disambiguate by context; a footnote explaining “the faith” = the body of apostolic teaching is recommended at first use.
ἅγιοιhagioiholy onescorporate designation for all believerssaintsThe whole believing community, not an ascetic elite, is entrusted with defending this faithمقدسان (reuse baseline TM).

Doctrine anchor: Contending for the Faith Once Delivered. This verse is the thesis statement of the whole epistle and should receive the same cross-document consistency treatment the baseline gives Romans 1:16-17.

Jude 1:4

παρεισδύνωpareisdynōto slip in secretly, to creep in unnoticedcovert infiltration”crept in,” “slipped in unnoticed”False teachers entered the community disguised as legitimate members, not as open outsidersپټ ورننوتل (pat war-nanawatal, “to secretly enter”). Risk Medium — must convey covert infiltration, not open arrival.
κρίμαkrimaverdict, sentencea judicial decision/condemnation already rendered”condemnation,” “judgment”These men’s condemnation was determined in advance (by God’s foreknowledge, not fatalistic predestination of persons to evil)فيصله (faisala, “verdict”). Risk Medium — must not read as unconditional fatalism (qadar); pair with brief note that this is prophetic foreknowledge of a pattern, not arbitrary predetermination of individuals to sin.
ἀσεβήςasebēsirreverent, impious, ungodlyactively dishonoring God, as opposed to merely lacking religionungodly, godlessCentral term for the doctrine “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers” — these are not outsiders but insiders acting against God’s characterبې دینه (be-dina). Risk High — “be-dina” can be misheard as simply “non-religious/secular”; must be taught as active impiety by people who outwardly participate in the community’s worship (cf. v.12, love feasts), not mere absence of belief.
χάριςcharisfavor, giftunmerited divine favorgraceGrace perverted into a license, the opposite of its intended fruitفضل (reuse baseline TM). Risk Critical (inherited) — this verse is a direct example of the very melmastia-reciprocity misunderstanding the baseline warns against: false teachers treat grace as a permission-token rather than a gift with no repayment obligation and no license implication.
ἀσέλγειαaselgeiaunrestrained sensuality, licentiousnessshameless indulgence of bodily appetite, often sexualsensuality, licentiousness, debaucheryMoral libertinism justified by a distortion of graceشهوت پرستي (shahwat-parasti, “lust-indulgence”). Risk Medium — “پرستي” (parasti) root can suggest “worship,” which is a fitting irony (they worship their appetite) but must not be misread as literal idol-worship.
δεσπότηςdespotēsmaster, absolute ownerone who holds outright ownership/sovereign authority over a person or household (distinct from κύριος, which stresses rule/authority more broadly)Master, Sovereign Lord, OwnerJude deliberately stacks two titles — absolute ownership (δεσπότης) and supreme authority (κύριος) — onto Christ; denying either is denying his deityمالک (malik, “owner/master”). Risk Critical. NOTE: the baseline Romans package rejected مالک as a rendering for κύριος (“too transactional, undershoots the deity claim”) — that rejection stands and is NOT reversed here. δεσپότης is a different Greek word than κύριος, and Jude uses both together in the same clause; مالک is retained specifically and only for δεσπότης, kept distinct from خداوند (khudawand), which must still render κύριος in the same verse. Losing this two-title distinction flattens Jude’s cumulative deity claim.
κύριοςkyrioslordsupreme authorityLordPaired with δεσπότης for maximal emphasis on Christ’s absolute deity and authorityخداوند (reuse baseline TM). Risk Critical (inherited).
ἀρνέομαιarneomaito deny, disownrefusal to acknowledge or confessdeny, disown, renounceThe false teachers’ practical unbelief functions as an active denial of Christ’s Lordship, the inverse of Romans 10:9’s confessionانکار کول (inkar kawul). Risk Low-Medium — should be worded to echo/contrast with the “عیسی خداوند دی” confession formula established in the baseline for Romans 10:9.

Doctrine anchor: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers; Lordship of Christ (baseline-inherited Critical doctrine, now under direct denial).

Jude 1:5

σώζωsōzōto save, rescuedeliverance from danger/death; salvation-family root of σωτηρίαsaved, deliveredGod’s historical act of saving Israel from Egypt is the first OT type/warning: a saved people can still fall under judgment for unbeliefVerb form of نجات (نجات ورکول / ژغورل — nejat warkawul / zhghorel). Risk High — must not be flattened to a merely political/national deliverance without its typological force.
πιστεύωpisteuōto believe, trustverb form of πίστιςbelieve, have faithUnbelief, not mere disobedience, is the specific cause of the wilderness generation’s destruction — the OT type for the false teachers’ dangerباور کول (bawar kawul) / verb form of ایمان راوړل (iman rawrel). Risk High — reuse the ایمان root established in baseline TM.
ἀπόλλυμιapollymito destroy, cause to perishruin, loss of life, or (theologically) final ruin/damnationdestroyed, perishedFirst of three “type” judgments (Israel, angels, Sodom) establishing the pattern: privileged status does not exempt from judgment for unbeliefهلاک کول / تباه کول (halak kawul / taba kawul, “to destroy/ruin”). Risk Medium-High — recurs in vv.5, 11; keep rendering consistent across all occurrences within Jude for thematic cohesion.

Doctrine anchor: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel). This is the first of three back-to-back OT type-warnings (Israel v.5, Angels v.6, Sodom v.7); rendering choices for ἀπόλλυμι should stay identical across all three for the parallelism to register in Pashto.

Jude 1:6

ἄγγελοςangelosmessengera spiritual being sent as God’s messenger; also, in secular Greek, any messengerangelSecond OT-adjacent type: even angels who abandoned their assigned position fell under judgmentپرښته (preshta). Risk High — پرښته is also the standard Islamic term for angels (فرښتې, e.g. Jibril, Mikail), a class of sinless, obedient beings in mainstream Sunni theology. Jude’s picture of angels who rebelled and are now imprisoned is a genuine point of friction with the popular assumption that angels cannot sin; this must be taught explicitly, not assumed as obviously compatible.
τηρέωtēreōto keep, guard, watch overto maintain, preserve, keep in a state or placekept, guarded, observedFirst occurrence of Jude’s dominant “keep/kept” theme (also vv.1, 13, 21, 24) — here angels failed to keep their position; later God keeps believers. The contrast is the theological spine of the letter.ساتل (satal, “to keep/guard/preserve”). Risk High — this single verb family must be rendered consistently (ساتل) at every occurrence across the whole book so the “kept/failed-to-keep/kept-by-God” wordplay is visible to the Pashto reader; inconsistent rendering would destroy the letter’s structural argument. See doctrine “Kept by God and Presented Blameless.”
ἀρχήarchē (here in sense “domain, position, rank”)first place, rule, domain”beginning” in most NT usage, but here specifically “own proper domain/rank""position,” “domain,” “own place of authority”The angels’ sin was abandoning their assigned rank/place in the created order — a rebellion against divinely appointed structure, not a moral lapse in the ordinary senseخپل منصب (khpal mansab, “their own office/rank”). Risk Medium — do not render with the ordinary Pashto word for “beginning” (پیل), which would obscure this specialized sense.
οἰκητήριονoikētēriondwelling place, habitationa proper, assigned abodedwelling, home, habitationThe angels left their proper heavenly abode, paralleling their abandonment of ἀρχήاستوگنځی (استوگنځی, “dwelling place”). Risk Low.
κρίσιςkrisisjudging, judgment (as process/event)the act or occasion of judgment, distinct from κρίμα (the verdict itself)judgmentThe specific future occasion (“the great day”) when this imprisonment will culminate in final sentencingمحاکمه (mahakama, “trial/judgment process”). Risk Medium — keep distinct from فيصله (faisala) used for κρίμα in v.4, so Pashto readers can track Jude’s distinction between the verdict already fixed and the future day of judgment.
δεσμοῖς ἀιδίοιςdesmois aidioiswith eternal/everlasting bondspermanent, unbreakable restrainteternal chains, everlasting bondsPresent imprisonment anticipating final judgmentتلپاتې زنځیرونه (talpate zanjeruna, “everlasting chains”). Risk Low-Medium.
ζόφοςzophosthick gloom, nether darknessthe deep darkness associated with the underworld/place of confinement (distinct from ordinary σκότος, “darkness”)gloom, blackness, deep darknessThe specific, intensified darkness of angelic imprisonment, distinguishing it from ordinary nightتیره تیارې (tera tyare, “deep/thick darkness”). Risk Low.

Doctrine anchor: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Angels); Kept by God and Presented Blameless (first occurrence of τηρέω theme).

Jude 1:7

Σόδομα, ΓόμορραSodoma, Gomorraproper namescities destroyed for grave sin (Genesis 19)Sodom, GomorrahThird OT type: total, visible, historical divine judgment on flagrant sinسدوم، عموره (Sadum, Amora — standard transliteration). Risk Low-Medium; these place names are widely known regionally via the Quranic account of the “people of Lut,” which is a genuine cultural bridge for the historicity of the judgment, though the Quranic account differs in some narrative details and must not be assumed identical.
ἐκπορνεύωekporneuōto commit fornication/sexual immorality thoroughly (intensive form of πορνεύω)flagrant, comprehensive sexual immoralitycommitted sexual immorality, gave themselves over to fornicationSodom’s defining sin, given as an example (δεῖγμα) of judgment on unrestrained immoralityجنسي بدکاري (jinsi badkari, “sexual immorality/wrongdoing”). Risk High — رejected: زنا (zina). زنا is a specific, narrowly-defined Islamic legal (شريعت hadd) category carrying a fixed legal punishment (lashing/stoning depending on interpretation); using it here would import an entire Islamic legal-penal framework foreign to Jude’s argument, which is about divine eschatological judgment, not human legal sentencing. جنسي بدکاري keeps the moral content without triggering that legal category.
σὰρξ ἑτέραsarx heteraother/strange fleshflesh outside the natural created order”unnatural desire,” “strange flesh,” “other flesh”Describes the specific unnatural character of Sodom’s sinبل ډول بدني تمایل (bal dol badani tamayul, “another kind of bodily inclination”) — a euphemistic but clear phrase. Risk Medium — translators should avoid crude or clinical vocabulary given the formal register requirement, while not obscuring the moral content.
δεῖγμαdeigmaexample, samplea specimen displayed for instruction/warningexample, warningSodom’s fate stands publicly as a permanent warning-example for all generationsنمونه (numuna, “example”). Risk Low.
πῦρ αἰώνιονpyr aiōnioneternal fireunending fire of judgmenteternal fireThe same final, unending punishment reserved for the ungodly, echoing later NT teaching (cf. Matt 25:41)تلپاتې اور (talpate oor, “eternal fire”). Risk Medium — regional Islamic eschatology (دوزخ/جهنم, dozakh/jahannam) has a vivid, well-known fire-of-judgment concept, which is a genuine bridge, but must be tied specifically to God’s judgment on unbelief/rebellion in Christ’s name, not treated as generically identical to the Islamic doctrine of hell’s conditions or duration debates.
δίκηdikēpenalty, punishment, retributive justicea just legal penaltypunishment, vengeance, retributionThe just, deserved consequence of Sodom’s sin, standing as the pattern for the false teachers’ coming judgmentسزا (saza, “punishment”). Risk Low-Medium.

Doctrine anchor: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Sodom) — completes the triad of OT type-warnings (Israel, Angels, Sodom).

Jude 1:8

μιαίνωmiainōto defile, polluteritual or moral contaminationdefile, pollute, corruptThe false teachers repeat Sodom’s pattern of self-defilement in their own generationککړول (kakarawal, “to defile/pollute”). Risk Low-Medium.
κυριότηςkyriotēslordship, dominion (abstract noun)authority/rule as a category, distinct from κύριος as a titleauthority, dominion, lordshipLikely refers to rejecting either Christ’s own lordship or the divinely-appointed order of angelic authority — an authority-defiance parallel to their denial of Christ in v.4واکمني (wakmani, “dominion/rulership”). Risk Medium-High — must be distinguished in Pashto from خداوند (Lord, the title) even though etymologically related in Greek; conflating them would blur whose authority is being rejected.
ἀθετέωatheteōto set aside, reject, treat as invaliddisregard, nullify, repudiatereject, despise, set at noughtActive, contemptuous repudiation of legitimate authorityرد کول (rad kawul, “to reject”). Risk Low.
δόξα (plural, δόξας)doxaiglorious ones (here plural, referring to angelic/majestic beings, not to God’s own glory)in this specific plural construction, a term for exalted spiritual beings”glorious ones,” “celestial beings,” “dignitaries”A specialized, contextual sense distinct from the ordinary theological use of δόξα for God’s own glory (as in v.24-25)جلالمن مخلوقات (jalalman makhluqat, “glorious/majestic beings”) — deliberately NOT the bare word جلال alone, to avoid readers assuming this refers to God’s own glory. Risk High — this is a genuine disambiguation risk: the same Pashto root (جلال, reused from baseline TM for “glory”) must be visibly modified/contextualized here so it is not confused with God’s own glory in vv.24-25.
βλασφημέωblasphēmeōto speak evil of, slander, blasphemeirreverent, contemptuous speech against a person or the divineblaspheme, slander, revileThe false teachers arrogantly revile spiritual authorities/beings they do not understand (developed further in v.10)توهين کول (tawhin kawul, “to insult/dishonor”). Risk High. رejected: کفر ویل (kufr wayal) — کفر carries the specific, identity-loaded Islamic sense of “disbelief/apostasy from Islam,” which would misdirect the reader toward an Islamic apostasy framework rather than Jude’s point about contemptuous, ignorant speech against legitimate authority.

Doctrine anchor: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers.

Jude 1:9

Μιχαήλ ὁ ἀρχάγγελοςMichaēl ho archangelosMichael the chief-messengerthe specific named archangelMichael the archangelContrasts the false teachers’ reckless contempt (v.8) with a genuine archangel’s restraint even toward the devilميکائيل، لوی پرښته (Mikail, loy preshta). Risk Medium — Michael/Mikail is also a named angel in the Quran (2:98), a positive shared-name bridge, but translators must not assume the surrounding narrative (dispute over Moses’ body, drawn from Jewish extra-biblical tradition) has any Quranic counterpart; it does not, and should not be presented as though it does.
διάβολοςdiabolosslanderer, accuserthe chief adversary of God and humanitydevil, Satan, the slandererThe specific adversarial figure Michael disputes with over Moses’ body (drawing on the extra-biblical “Assumption of Moses” tradition)شیطان (Shaytan). Risk High — شیطان/Iblis is a well-known figure in Islamic theology (Quran’s Iblis narrative, refusal to bow to Adam), a genuinely shared adversarial figure, but the specific narrative content here (dispute over Moses’ body) has no Quranic parallel and must not be conflated with the Iblis-and-Adam story.
διακρίνομαιdiakrinomai (here: “to dispute/contend”)to be divided, to contend, to disputein this context, engaging in legal/verbal disputecontended, disputedMichael’s restrained legal dispute, not physical combatجدال کول (jidal kawul, “to dispute/argue”). Risk Low.
ἐπιτιμάωepitimaōto rebuke, charge sternlyauthoritative correction/rebukerebukeMichael defers ultimate judgment to the Lord rather than pronouncing it himself — a model of restraint the false teachers utterly lackرغندنه کول / نیوکه کول (righandana kawul, “to rebuke”). Risk Low-Medium.

Translator Note (non-glossary, doctrinal): This verse (and v.14 below) draws on Jewish extra-biblical literature (the Assumption of Moses and 1 Enoch) not part of the Protestant OT canon. This raises a live question for the doctrine of Inspiration of Scripture (cf. Romans baseline doctrine “inspiration_of_scripture,” High risk): Jude’s inspired citation of non-canonical material does not thereby canonize those documents; Jude affirms the truth of specific statements/traditions, not the full inspiration of their source texts. This distinction must be taught explicitly to avoid two opposite errors: (1) assuming these are “lost scriptures” recovered (which would feed the regional tahrif/corrupted-scripture narrative already flagged in the baseline), or (2) assuming Jude’s citation destabilizes the doctrine of a closed canon. Risk: High. Human theologian review required at every occurrence.

ΚάϊνKainCainthe first murderer (Genesis 4)Cain”The way of Cain” = a pattern of self-willed, God-defying religion that ends in violence/rejectionقابيل (Qabil — shared transliteration with Islamic tafsir tradition, though Cain/Abel are not named in the Quran’s own text). Risk Medium — the name is culturally recognizable, but the specific moral point (“the way of Cain” as a pattern of false religion) is a distinctly biblical-typological argument not present in Islamic tradition and must be taught, not assumed.

NOTE: some regional tafsir traditions associate the Quranic figure Qarun (Quran 29:39, 40:24 — a wealthy man swallowed by the earth for arrogance) with Korah; this identification is disputed among scholars and should NOT be asserted as certain in translation materials, though it may be mentioned as a possible cultural bridge for the “swallowed up/judged for rebellion” theme.

Doctrine anchor: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers — three OT exemplars of corrupted religious leadership (Cain, Balaam, Korah), distinct from the earlier triad of judgment-types in vv.5-7.

τετήρηταιtetērētaihas been kept/reservedperfect passive of τηρέωreserved, keptThird occurrence of the τηρέω theme — this time darkness is “kept/reserved” for the ungodly, the grim mirror-image of God “keeping” believers in v.1, 21, 24ساتل شوی دی (satal shaway di) — same root ساتل as established for τηρέω throughout. Risk High for consistency; this ironic reversal (judgment “kept” for the wicked vs. believers “kept” by God) is only visible in Pashto if the same verb root is used at every occurrence.

Risk High — rejected: ادريس (Idris). Islamic tradition often identifies Idris (Quran 19:56-57, a prophet “raised up”) with Enoch, but the identification is a later tafsir tradition, not textually certain, and importing the name “Idris” would smuggle in an entire separate body of Islamic legend about Idris that has no connection to Jude’s actual citation. Use خنوخ and explain the Genesis 5 background directly.

Risk High — disambiguation failure here would wrongly suggest believers themselves accompany final judgment in the same sense angels do, or conversely suggest angels are called “saints” in the ordinary believer-sense.

Risk High — this term must be explicitly paired and contrasted with روحاني (rohani, “spiritual,” reused from the baseline TM’s رendering for “spiritual gifts”) so the نفساني/روحاني contrast is visible: these people operate by nafs alone, having no روح القدس (Holy Spirit) — a direct, load-bearing contrast at the heart of this verse.

Risk Critical — this must retain the full personal, divine sense of روح القدس established in the baseline (distinguishing the Person of the Spirit from the Quranic identification with the angel Jibril); the point here is absence of the divine Spirit’s presence, not merely absence of religious feeling.

Doctrine anchor: This verse is the theological hinge distinguishing the false teachers (no Spirit) from the true believers addressed in v.20 (praying “in the Holy Spirit”). Flag for human theologian review given direct Holy Spirit content.

Risk High — same consistency requirement as noted at v.6 and v.13; this is the fourth of five occurrences of the τηρέω root and must match exactly.
ἔλεοςeleosmercy, compassionundeserved compassion shown toward those in need/distress, especially toward the guiltymercyBelievers wait expectantly for Christ’s mercy at his return — the doctrinal anchor for “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering”رحمت (rahmat). Risk Critical — رحمت (rahmat/Ar-Rahim) is one of the two most central divine attribute-names in Islamic theology (the opening Quranic invocation “Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim”); this is simultaneously the strongest available Pashto word for mercy and the highest-collision term in this book. It must always be anchored explicitly to Christ (“د خداوند عیسی مسیح رحمت,” “the mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ”) so it is never left as an unattributed, generic invocation of divine mercy detachable from its specifically Christological source.

Doctrine anchor: Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering — the pastoral climax of the letter, standing in deliberate contrast to the certain judgment described in vv.4-16.

PART 2 — Whole-Book Chapter Study (Completing Full-Book Coverage)

As noted above, Jude is a single chapter. The core passage (vv.3-23) has been fully analyzed in Part 1. This section completes full-book coverage of Chapter 1 by treating the two remaining sections — the salutation (vv.1-2) and the closing doxology (vv.24-25) — with the same field structure, so that no verse of the book is left unexamined.

Jude 1:1-2 (Salutation)

Risk High (new term) — بنده is also the standard Islamic-Persianate term for a human being’s devotional relationship to Allah (banda-i-Khuda), a genuine and positive shared piety-vocabulary bridge, but must retain the specific object “of Jesus Christ” at every occurrence so it is not read as generic submission-to-God-in-general (cf. baseline “obedience_of_faith” doctrine’s caution about competing loyalty-codes).

Risk High — this is the FIRST occurrence of the theme; consistency with all later occurrences is essential for the letter’s argument to register.
