Core Glossary
Core Glossary — The Gospel of Mark (English → Pashto)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, across all sixteen chapters of Mark. Section 1 lists terms already established in the Romans baseline (translation_memory.json); these renderings MUST be reused exactly and are cited here for completeness, not re-decided. Section 2 lists new terms required for Mark that are not present in the Romans baseline, each assigned a risk tier using the identical Critical/High/Medium/Low framework the baseline uses. Chapter-of-first-occurrence is noted for traceability back to 07_semantic_analysis.md.
Section 1 — Baseline Terms Reused Exactly (from Romans translation_memory.json)

| Lord | خداوند | Critical | 1:3, 2:28, 5:19, 11:3, 11:9, 12:36-37, 13:35 | Must remain distinct from negative κατακυριεύω (“lord over/dominate,” Mark 10:42) — see Section 2 |

Coverage Statement
This glossary covers load-bearing terms drawn from every chapter of Mark (1-16), cross-referenced to 07_semantic_analysis.md. Terms belonging to the Romans baseline’s Pauline forensic vocabulary that do not occur in Mark at all (e.g., δικαιοσύνη/“righteousness,” χάρις/“grace,” νόμος/“law” as a technical term, δικαίωσις/“justification”) are intentionally excluded from this glossary rather than forced into artificial Markan citations, consistent with this document’s method note that Mark conveys equivalent doctrinal content narratively rather than through Paul’s abstract vocabulary.
Critical Risk Terms
Salvation
Approved rendering: نجات
Transliteration: nejat
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: σωτηρία / σῴζω
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: beyond the shared Islamic deeds-weighing framework, Pashtunwali’s badal (revenge) code operates on a cyclical debt-for-debt logic; nanawatai is a positive cultural bridge for substitutionary satisfaction. In Mark this same root (σῴζω) is deliberately reused for physical healing/rescue — see new entry ‘heal_save’ for the resulting double-sense translation requirement. Inherited from Romans package.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: بیا راژوندي کیدل
Transliteration: bya rajwandi kedal
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Original: ἀνάστασις / ἐγείρω
Category: Eschatology
CRITICAL: shares the Quran’s crucifixion-denial (4:157). Mark 16:6’s aorist passive (‘he has been raised’) anchors this doctrine narratively and should be taught with oral/narrative apologetic weight (named women witnesses, empty tomb) given lower baseline literacy in much of the readership. Inherited from Romans package.
Lord
Approved rendering: خداوند
Transliteration: Khudawand
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: مالک
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: مالک is too transactional and undershoots the claim. In Mark, this rendering must be kept lexically distinct from the negative κατακυριεύω (‘lord it over/dominate,’ 10:42) — see new entry ‘lord_over_dominate’ — which shares the same root but describes abusive worldly power Jesus condemns. Never use خداوند or its cognates for that negative sense. Inherited from Romans package.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: د خدای زوی
Transliteration: da Khudai zoy
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: the same Quranic denial (112:3, 19:35) applies with full force. Forms Mark’s own structural bracket across the whole Gospel (1:1, 1:11, 3:11, 5:7, 9:7, 14:61, climactically 15:39’s Gentile centurion confession). Inherited from Romans package.
Messiah
Approved rendering: مسیح
Transliteration: Masih
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: carries the same pre-loaded Quranic content as Arabic’s al-Masih. Peter’s confession (Mark 8:29) is the book’s own structural turning point, dividing the ministry-narrative from the Passion-narrative; every occurrence must actively correct the honored-prophet, non-divine, non-crucified default content. Inherited from Romans package.
Jesus
Approved rendering: عیسی
Transliteration: Isa
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: the settled, uncontroversial Pashto Christian usage. The risk is entirely in content: ‘Isa’ still carries the Quranic prophet-only, non-crucified, non-divine narrative that must be actively corrected throughout Mark. Inherited from Romans package.
God
Approved rendering: خدای
Transliteration: Khudai
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: الله
Original: θεός
Category: God
CRITICAL: Khudai is a native word from the same Old Iranian root as Persian’s Khoda. Strict tawhid theology must be distinguished from the Trinitarian conception denoted by the same word throughout Mark. Inherited from Romans package.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: روح القدس
Transliteration: Rooh-ul-Qudus
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
CRITICAL: identical Quranic phrase and identical mainstream tafsir identification with Jibril. Must be kept sharply distinct from Mark’s own ‘unclean spirit’ (see new entry ‘unclean_spirit’) despite sharing the root روح. Inherited from Romans package.
Father
Approved rendering: پلار
Transliteration: plar
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
CRITICAL: shares the tawhid-anthropomorphism objection; ‘plar’ in Pashtun patriarchal tribal culture also carries strong stern-authority connotations. Especially load-bearing at Mark 14:36 (Gethsemane) and 13:32; must counterbalance the authority-default with warmth. Inherited from Romans package.
Son Of Man
Approved rendering: د انسان زوی
Transliteration: da insan zoy
Doctrine: Son of Man Title / Jesus as the Suffering Servant and Son of God
Original: ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Mark’s single most important Christological title (~14 occurrences: 2:10, 2:28, 8:31, 8:38, 9:31, 10:33, 10:45, 13:26, 14:21, 14:41, 14:62). Fuses a generic Semitic idiom for ‘a human being’ with Daniel 7:13-14’s exalted, dominion-receiving apocalyptic figure. A Pashto/Muslim-background reader may hear ‘د انسان زوی’ as merely confirming plain humanity, reinforcing the Quranic ‘Isa was only a human prophet’ reading, unless the Daniel 7 authority-and-glory content is taught explicitly at every major occurrence. No dynamic paraphrase permitted; retain the literal calque so the deliberate ambiguity Mark exploits is preserved for teaching to resolve.
Ransom
Approved rendering: فدیه
Transliteration: fidya
Doctrine: The Ransom for Many
Rejected alternatives: بدل
Original: λύτρον
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. Mark 10:45’s λύτρον, the theological climax of the whole book. فدیه is the standard Islamic-legal ransom/compensation term (Qur’an 2:196, 47:4) and risks being read as a lesser discharge-of-obligation payment rather than a person’s life given once for all. بدل is explicitly rejected as the ransom-noun because it is the operative term of Pashtunwali’s badal revenge-cycle code and would import cyclical life-for-life retaliation logic into a text whose actual logic is substitutionary and gracious. Invoke nanawatai (ritual submission accepted in place of retaliation) carefully as a positive, calibrated bridge while correcting both فدیه’s ritual-compensation default and بدل’s revenge-cycle default. Every occurrence requires human theologian review.
Substitution Anti
Approved rendering: د … پر ځای / د … په بدل کې
Transliteration: da … par zaay / da … pa badal ke
Doctrine: The Ransom for Many
Rejected alternatives: د … په ګټه کې (a weaker ‘for the sake of’/ὑπέρ-style rendering)
Original: ἀντί
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. Renders Mark 10:45’s strict substitutionary preposition ἀντί (‘in place of, instead of’ — the same preposition used in the LXX for the lex talionis). Must not be softened to a weaker ‘for the sake of’ rendering, which would blunt the very point Isaiah 53 and this verse make. Limited, strictly prepositional use of بدل (‘exchange’) here is lower-risk than using بدل as the ransom-noun itself (see ‘ransom’ entry) since it functions only grammatically, not as an imported revenge-code concept.
Unclean Spirit
Approved rendering: ناپاک روح
Transliteration: napak rooh
Doctrine: Jesus’ Authority over Sickness, Sin, and Nature
Original: πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον
Category: Spiritual Warfare
NEW TERM. Built deliberately on روح (spirit), shared with روح القدس (Holy Spirit), so Mark’s own Holy/unclean contrast (esp. 3:28-30) is preserved. The qualifier ناپاک must NEVER be dropped, abbreviated, or implied by context alone in any occurrence (11 times in Mark), or a reader could momentarily read ‘spirit’ alone as ambiguous between the Holy Spirit and a demonic spirit.
Ego Eimi
Approved rendering: زه یم
Transliteration: za yem
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: softened ‘it’s me, don’t be afraid’ reassurance-only rendering
Original: ἐγώ εἰμι
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Jesus’s ‘I am’ self-disclosure (Mark 6:50, walking on water; climactically 14:62, before the high priest), echoing Exodus 3:14’s divine self-naming. The greatest risk is under-translation: rendering this as merely reassuring loses the Christological force entirely, since the council’s own blasphemy charge (14:63-64) depends on hearers recognizing an unambiguous divine self-identification. Light touch with cross-reference note at 6:50; full unpacking required at 14:62.
Necessity Must Suffer
Approved rendering: پکار دی چې … ووزغمي
Transliteration: pkar day che … wu-zaghmi
Doctrine: The Necessity of the Cross
Original: δεῖ + πάσχω
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Renders δεῖ + πάσχω, binding divine necessity that the Son of Man suffer, be rejected, and be killed (Mark 8:31, 9:31, 10:33-34). Directly opposes the mainstream Sunni expectation, reinforced by Qur’an 4:157, that God would rescue rather than abandon a true prophet/Messiah to shameful, apparently defeated suffering; must be taught as a deliberate, Scripture-fulfilling doctrinal claim, not an incidental narrative detail.
Cross Discipleship
Approved rendering: صلیب
Transliteration: saleeb
Doctrine: The Necessity of the Cross / Costly Discipleship and Persecution
Original: σταυρός
Category: Discipleship
NEW TERM. First used metaphorically as a call to costly discipleship (Mark 8:34) before its literal historical use in ch.15 (see ‘crucify_cross’). ‘Take up your cross and follow me’ is not a purely spiritual metaphor for this specific readership but a call to potentially fatal discipleship, not hypothetical for many Pashto-speaking house-church believers; must be taught with full pastoral seriousness.
Gehenna
Approved rendering: جهنم
Transliteration: jahannam
Doctrine: Eschatological Judgment (Gehenna)
Original: γέεννα
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM. جهنم is the standard, richly elaborated Quranic term for hell, carrying an entire attached apparatus (named levels, works-and-mercy entry framework, vivid folk-tradition punishments). This full conceptual apparatus must be actively distinguished from Mark 9:43-48’s Gehenna, taught as real, serious, final exclusion from God’s presence, not a graduated punishment system matched to a ledger of deeds — parallel to the baseline’s treatment of god/holy_spirit.
Blood Of Covenant
Approved rendering: د تړون وینه
Transliteration: da tarun weena
Doctrine: Blood of the New Covenant
Original: τὸ αἷμά μου τῆς διαθήκης
Category: Covenant
NEW TERM. Mark 14:22-24, ‘my blood of the covenant, poured out for many,’ deliberately echoing the ransom saying’s ‘for many’ (10:45). Sharpens the baseline covenant entry’s caution that Pashtunwali-resonant تړون implies a negotiated, revocable pact between equals; here the covenant is sealed unilaterally by the Son’s own body and blood. Blood language, resonant with Qurbani sacrificial categories, must be taught as once-for-all atoning blood, not a repeatable seasonal sacrifice.
Crucify Cross
Approved rendering: صلیب کول / صلیب
Transliteration: saleeb kawul / saleeb
Doctrine: Historicity of the Crucifixion
Original: σταυρόω / σταυρός
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. The single highest-stakes historical-event term in the entire Gospel (Mark 15:20-25). Qur’an 4:157 explicitly denies Jesus was killed or crucified (‘it was made to appear so,’ shubbiha lahum), a doctrine most of the surrounding religious culture holds. Mark supplies named eyewitnesses (the women, 15:40; the centurion, 15:39; Joseph of Arimathea, 15:43-46) that should be foregrounded as concrete, embodied historical detail rather than left as abstract doctrinal assertion. Requires human theologian review at every occurrence.
Cry Of Dereliction
Approved rendering: ایلوی ایلوی، لما سبقتني (خدایه زما، خدایه زما، ته ولې پرېښودم؟)
Transliteration: Eloi Eloi, lema sabakhthani (Khudaya zma, Khudaya zma, te wale prekhodam?)
Doctrine: The Cry of Dereliction
Original: Ἐλωΐ Ἐλωΐ, λεμὰ σαβαχθανί
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Mark 15:34, quoting Psalm 22:1. Must not be smoothed over or explained away as merely rhetorical, nor allowed to suggest an actual rupture within the Trinity; requires careful theological framing distinguishing felt experienced abandonment from any claim the Father ceased to love or be present with the Son. Given the culture’s strong expectation God would never let his righteous prophet suffer such abandonment, requires careful, non-flippant pastoral teaching and human theologian review.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: انجیل
Transliteration: Injil
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: زیری
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Shares the same tahrif (corruption) assumption found across the Islamicate world; must be taught as the NT record itself, not a lost predecessor text. In Mark this is additionally the book’s own opening title-word (1:1) and recurs at every mission/evangelism-critical passage (1:14-15, 13:10, 16:15). Inherited from Romans package.
Faith
Approved rendering: ایمان
Transliteration: iman
Doctrine: Faith
Original: πίστις / πιστεύω
Category: Faith
Shares the shared Islamic six-pillars creedal structure, but Pashtun listeners also measure loyalty against Pashtunwali’s own honor code (nang). In Mark, faith is repeatedly dramatized against fear (4:40, 5:36, 9:24) rather than argued forensically; ایمان must remain audibly distinct from ویره (fear) throughout so this narrative contrast is legible. Inherited from Romans package.
Apostle
Approved rendering: رسول
Transliteration: rasul
Doctrine: Apostleship
Original: ἀπόστολος / ἀποστέλλω
Category: Church
Same collision with Muhammad’s defining title as in Arabic and Persian. Mark 3:14, 6:7-13, 6:30 (sending of the Twelve) must not be read as a parallel prophetic-succession claim. Inherited from Romans package.
Called
Approved rendering: بلل شوی
Transliteration: balal shaway
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Original: καλέω / κλητός
Category: Salvation
Context-sensitive. In Mark, the calling of the fishermen (1:20) and of sinners (2:17) are direct, personal summonses that must convey sovereign initiative, not human-initiated seeking. Inherited from Romans package.
Sin
Approved rendering: ګناه
Transliteration: gunah
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Beyond Islam’s fitrah doctrine, Pashtunwali’s honor-shame ethics primarily track violations of nang, not transgression against a personal God. Mark ties this directly to Jesus’s own authority to forgive (2:5-10), a deity claim in narrative form that must not be softened. Inherited from Romans package.
Prophet
Approved rendering: پیغمبر
Transliteration: peghambar
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Original: προφήτης
Category: Covenant
Same finality-of-prophethood risk as Arabic’s nabi. Mark 6:4, 6:15, 8:28 repeatedly show crowds categorizing Jesus as merely ‘a prophet’; this must be paired with fuller Christological titles (Christ, Son of God) so ‘prophet’ is never mistaken for Jesus’s complete or final identity. Inherited from Romans package.
Covenant
Approved rendering: تړون
Transliteration: tarun
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: διαθήκη
Category: Covenant
Resonant with Pashtunwali’s own treaty-making, but such pacts are negotiated between relative equals and revocable, whereas the biblical covenant is unilaterally, graciously given. Sharpened further at Mark 14:24’s Last Supper — see new entry ‘blood_of_covenant.’ Inherited from Romans package.
Election
Approved rendering: غوره کول
Transliteration: ghwara kawul
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Original: ἐκλεκτός
Category: Salvation
Beyond the shared Sunni qadar doctrine, must not be read through Pashtun tribal lineage-based status or bloodline prestige. Mark 13:20, 22, 27’s apocalyptic ‘elect’ are gathered by God’s own initiative. Inherited from Romans package.
Mission
Approved rendering: ماموریت
Transliteration: ma’muriyat
Doctrine: Mission to the Nations
Original: ἀποστέλλω / πέμπω
Category: Church
Open evangelism carries severe, potentially life-threatening legal and social risk for converts from Islam. Mark 13:10 pairs this mission with the same necessity-vocabulary (δεῖ) used for Christ’s own suffering — see new entry ‘necessity_must_suffer.’ Inherited from Romans package.
Israel
Approved rendering: اسرائیل
Transliteration: Esra’il
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: Ἰσραήλ
Category: Covenant
Carries general pan-Islamic solidarity-based negative sentiment. Appears in the Shema quotation (Mark 12:29) and the mocking-inscription context (15:32); requires the same pastoral framing as the baseline. Inherited from Romans package.
Abba
Approved rendering: ابا
Transliteration: Abba
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: ἀββά
Category: God
Aramaic intimacy-term. Mark 14:36 is the Gospel narrative’s own enactment of the intimacy the baseline’s Romans 8:15 entry anticipates doctrinally. Inherited from Romans package.
Seed Of David
Approved rendering: د داود نسل
Transliteration: da Dawud nasl
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: σπέρμα Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant
Conveys physical lineage and OT covenant fulfillment; background to Mark 12:35-37’s question about David’s son and Lord. See also new entry ‘son_of_david’ for the distinct direct messianic address-title. Inherited from Romans package.
Baptism
Approved rendering: تعمید
Transliteration: ta’mid
Doctrine: Faith and Discipleship amid Fear / The Necessity of the Cross
Original: βάπτισμα / βαπτίζω
Category: Discipleship
NEW TERM. تعمید’s primary association for a Muslim-background reader is the specific Christian water rite (1:4-11), which may obscure the metaphorical ‘immersion into suffering’ sense in Mark 10:38-39; it also sits near Islamic ritual purification (wudu/ghusl), risking a cleansing reading rather than participation in suffering. Both senses must be flagged and explained at first occurrence.
Authority
Approved rendering: واک
Transliteration: wak
Doctrine: Jesus’ Authority over Sickness, Sin, and Nature
Original: ἐξουσία
Category: Authority
NEW TERM. Jesus’s unique, non-delegated authority over teaching (1:22), unclean spirits (1:27), and sin (2:10). Must be kept lexically distinguishable from the negative κατεξουσιάζω/κατακυριεύω (‘lord over,’ Mark 10:42 — see ‘lord_over_dominate’) despite the shared root family, or Jesus’s own positive authority collapses into the same category as the abusive worldly domination he condemns.
Lord Over Dominate
Approved rendering: پر مخکې واکمني کول
Transliteration: par mukhke wakmani kawul
Doctrine: Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness
Rejected alternatives: خداوند / any Lord-cognate rendering — FORBIDDEN
Original: κατακυριεύω / κατεξουσιάζω
Category: Servanthood
NEW TERM. Renders Mark 10:42’s κατακυριεύω/κατεξουσιάζω, the negative, self-serving pattern of worldly rulers. Shares the same root family as خداوند (Lord), which the baseline reserves exclusively for Christ’s supreme, saving Lordship. MUST NEVER be rendered with خداوند or its cognates, or Jesus’s own true Lordship risks linguistic conflation with the abusive pattern he condemns. This is the single most consequential fencing rule in the Mark package.
Servant
Approved rendering: خدمتګار
Transliteration: khedmatgar
Doctrine: Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness
Original: διάκονος
Category: Servanthood
NEW TERM. Renders διάκονος (Mark 9:35, 10:43). Pashtunwali’s honor code (nang) and the tribal khan/servant social hierarchy make voluntary servant status inherently low-honor and actively shameful for a man of standing; Jesus’s command must be taught explicitly as an inversion of the culture’s default honor-ranking, not softened into a vague call to be helpful.
Slave
Approved rendering: غلام
Transliteration: gholam
Doctrine: Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness / The Ransom for Many
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Servanthood
NEW TERM. Renders δοῦλος (Mark 10:44), a sharper term than διάκονος. غلام carries positive devotional resonance (‘slave/servant of God,’ ‘abd) as pious self-abasement before God — a genuine bridge for the general category of submission — but Jesus’s command to be slave ‘of all’ (πάντων) is more radical and has no ready parallel in Islamic devotional vocabulary or Pashtunwali honor culture; must be taught as a deliberate, culture-defying extension.
Heal Save
Approved rendering: روغ شوی / نجات موندل
Transliteration: rogh shaway / nejat mundal
Doctrine: The Kingdom of God Breaking In / Salvation
Original: σῴζω
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. Renders σῴζω, a single Greek verb Mark deliberately uses both for physical healing (5:23, 5:28, 5:34, 6:56, 10:52) and eternal salvation (8:35, 10:26, 13:13). If translators default to a purely medical rendering throughout, Mark’s deliberate wordplay is lost; if they default to نجات even in purely medical contexts, readers may wrongly infer every healed person was thereby eternally saved. Each occurrence requires judgment; flag 5:34 and 10:52 for native-speaker and, where doctrinally load-bearing, theologian review.
Repentance
Approved rendering: توبه / توبه کول
Transliteration: tauba / tauba kawul
Doctrine: Repentance and the Kingdom
Original: μετανοέω / μετάνοια
Category: Kingdom
NEW TERM. توبه is a deeply established Islamic devotional category for a sinner’s own act of contrition seeking Allah’s mercy within a deeds-and-mercy framework. Mark’s repentance (1:4, 1:15, 6:12) is the necessary response to a specific, dawning Kingdom and to Christ’s own direct authority to forgive (2:10) — this connection must be taught explicitly, not left as generic penitence.
Blasphemy
Approved rendering: د خدای سپکاوی
Transliteration: da Khudai spakawi
Doctrine: The Necessity of the Cross / The Unforgivable Sin
Rejected alternatives: کفر (kufr)
Original: βλασφημία / βλασφημέω
Category: Sin
NEW TERM. کفر is explicitly rejected: it denotes the whole Islamic category of unbelief/disbelief in God, not the NT’s narrower category of willful verbal dishonor against God’s name or the Spirit’s work; using kufr would conflate blasphemy with unbelief itself and distort Mark 3:29’s unforgivable-sin saying into a blanket condemnation of unbelief.
Unforgivable Sin
Approved rendering: تلپاتې ګناه
Transliteration: talpaate gunah
Doctrine: The Unforgivable Sin
Original: ἁμάρτημα αἰώνιον / οὐκ ἔχει ἄφεσιν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα
Category: Sin
NEW TERM. Mark 3:28-30’s ‘eternal sin.’ In a context where deeds-weighing and the possibility of Allah’s mercy for even serious sins is a live and comforting doctrine, this saying’s apparent severity requires careful pastoral framing (a settled, willful rejection of the Spirit’s testimony, not any specific angry word) to avoid despair-inducing misapplication.
Mystery
Approved rendering: رمز / پټ راز
Transliteration: ramz / pat raaz
Doctrine: The Messianic Secret
Original: μυστήριον
Category: Messianic Secret
NEW TERM. Regional Sufi asrar/ramz tradition (secrets disclosed only to initiated seekers under a pir’s guidance) is a resonant but risky frame: it suggests an esoteric, effort-graded initiation, whereas Mark 4:11’s ‘mystery’ is a divine passive gift (δέδοται) given to ordinary disciples, not earned through spiritual advancement. This distinction must be taught explicitly alongside the term.
Corban
Approved rendering: قربان
Transliteration: Qurban
Doctrine: Human Tradition versus God’s Commandment
Original: κορβάν
Category: Covenant
NEW TERM. قربان/قربانی is the standard Pashto/Islamicate term for a dedicatory sacrifice (notably Eid al-Adha’s qurbani) — an excellent etymological match for Mark 7:11’s κορβάν, but teaching must clarify Jesus critiques a specific legal loophole exploiting vow-language to withhold support from parents, not sacrificial dedication itself or contemporary Qurbani practice.
Defile Unclean
Approved rendering: ناولی کول
Transliteration: naawali kawul
Doctrine: Dietary Purity and Defilement
Original: κοινός / κοινόω
Category: Sin
NEW TERM. Directly parallels, and could easily be heard as directly attacking, the halal/haram dietary system governing daily Muslim-background readers’ community life; Mark 7:14-23 must be presented as relocating moral defilement to the human heart, not as a blanket dismissal of dietary discipline.
Shame
Approved rendering: شرمیدل
Transliteration: sharmedal
Doctrine: Faith and Discipleship amid Fear / Costly Discipleship and Persecution
Original: ἐπαισχύνομαι
Category: Discipleship
NEW TERM. Renders ἐπαισχύνομαι, Mark 8:38 (‘whoever is ashamed of me’). In an honor-shame culture, public shame is an intensely serious social category; being (or refusing to be) ashamed of Christ before others carries very real social and, for this readership, physical danger. Keep distinct from ‘mock_ridicule’ (what was done to Christ) so the directional distinction remains visible.
Transfiguration
Approved rendering: بدلون (د بڼې)
Transliteration: badloon (da banai)
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: μεταμορφόω
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Mark 9:2-7, Jesus’s appearance visibly changed, confirmed by the Father’s voice naming him ‘my beloved Son.’ Must be presented as objective, three-witnessed, divinely authenticated confirmation of Christ’s unique Sonship — not relativized to a generic mystical-vision category comparable to Sufi visions of divine light, though that resonance may be noted as a point of cultural contact.
Divorce Adultery
Approved rendering: طلاق ورکول / زنا
Transliteration: talaaq warkawul / zina
Doctrine: Divorce and Marriage Ethics
Original: ἀπολύω / μοιχεία
Category: Ethics
NEW TERM. طلاق and زنا are heavily regulated, legally consequential categories in Islamic personal law, with زنا carrying severe penalties under some interpretations of sharia and, in some jurisdictions, statutory law. Jesus’s Genesis-rooted teaching (Mark 10:2-12) must be taught pastorally with acute awareness of the real legal and social stakes for this readership.
Eternal Life Inheritance
Approved rendering: د تلپاتې ژوند میراث اخیستل
Transliteration: da talpaate zhwand miraath akhistal
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος / κληρονομέω
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. Renders κληρονομέω/ζωὴ αἰώνιος at Mark 10:17-30. Reuses میراث (inheritance), the same vocabulary the baseline’s adoption entry flags as culturally loaded given Pashtun patrilineal inheritance custom; a non-merited inheritance received through faith rather than earned through blood-lineage or moral performance is a sharp departure from the culture’s default logic and must be taught explicitly against it.
Son Of David
Approved rendering: د داود زوی
Transliteration: da Dawud zoy
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant and Messianic Promise
Original: υἱὸς Δαυίδ
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Bartimaeus’s public, insistent messianic address (Mark 10:47-48) despite crowd attempts to silence him — one of the few moments in Mark where a messianic title is proclaimed loudly and unsuppressed rather than kept secret, a deliberate signal that the Messianic Secret is beginning to lift as Jesus approaches Jerusalem.
Cornerstone
Approved rendering: د کونج کاڼی
Transliteration: da konj kaanai
Doctrine: The Necessity of the Cross / Fulfillment of Prophecy
Original: κεφαλὴ γωνίας
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Mark 12:10-11, quoting Psalm 118:22-23. Directly connects the ‘must suffer and be rejected’ language of the Passion predictions with Christ’s ultimate exaltation/resurrection, countering the Islamic expectation that a true prophet/Messiah would not be permitted to suffer rejection and apparent defeat at all.
Abomination Of Desolation
Approved rendering: د ورانۍ کرغیړنتوب
Transliteration: da wraani karghirantob
Doctrine: The Abomination of Desolation and Apocalyptic Warning
Original: τὸ βδέλυγμα τῆς ἐρημώσεως
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM. Mark 13:14, quoting Daniel 9:27/11:31/12:11. Given the region’s own recent history of conflict, foreign occupation, and competing ‘Islamic Emirate’ religious-political sovereignty claims, teachers must resist speculative contemporary political identification and instead teach the passage’s pastoral purpose of warning and hope amid real tribulation.
Handed Over
Approved rendering: خیانت کول (Judas) / سپارل کیدل (divine plan)
Transliteration: khianat kawul / sparal kedal
Doctrine: The Necessity of the Cross
Original: παραδίδωμι
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Renders παραδίδωμι, used of Judas’s treacherous betrayal AND, in the passive, of the Son of Man’s being handed over as part of the Father’s sovereign redemptive plan. Both senses must be tracked with distinct vocabulary, especially at Mark 14:41 where both converge, or God appears complicit in treachery / Judas’s culpability is wrongly softened.
Will Thelema
Approved rendering: رضا / خوښه
Transliteration: raza / khwakha
Doctrine: The Necessity of the Cross / Providence
Original: θέλημα
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Mark 14:36, Gethsemane’s ‘not what I will, but what you will.’ Jesus’s agonized, personal, freely-chosen submission of his own will to the Father’s redemptive plan must be distinguished from impersonal fatalistic submission to qadar (destiny); this is relational, anguished, filial submission between two Persons in loving communion.
King Of The Jews
Approved rendering: د یهودیانو پاچا
Transliteration: da yahudiano paacha
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant and Messianic Promise
Original: ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. The title used mockingly by Pilate, the soldiers, and inscribed on the cross itself (Mark 15:2, 9, 12, 18, 26). Mark deploys this title with sustained, deliberate irony — spoken in mockery, yet objectively true; teachers should highlight this irony explicitly rather than treat it as a mere historical execution detail.
Mark Longer Ending Textual Note
Approved rendering: د مرقس ۱۶:۹-۲۰ اوږده پایله (متني یادښت)
Transliteration: da Marqus 16:9-20 awgada payla (matni yaadasht)
Doctrine: Textual Reliability of the Longer Ending
NEW TERM (textual-critical, not a lexical rendering). The earliest and most reliable manuscripts (Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Vaticanus) end at Mark 16:8; verses 9-20 are present in the majority of later manuscripts and virtually all historic translation traditions but are widely regarded as a later addition. Recommend retaining 16:9-20 per established Pashto Bible-tradition convention with a clear textual footnote, and frame 16:17-18’s ‘new tongues,’ ‘serpents,’ and ‘drinking poison’ carefully against literalist snake-handling/poison-testing practices that would be pastorally harmful if imported uncritically into this readership’s practice.
Medium Risk Terms
Calling
Approved rendering: بلنه
Transliteration: balana
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
Generally everyday invitation-vocabulary; the direction of address (God calling a person) must be made explicit, especially at Mark 3:13. Inherited from Romans package.
Holy
Approved rendering: مقدس
Transliteration: moqaddas
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Shared vocabulary across the region; needs the relational, Spirit-wrought sense reinforced over ritual-observance holiness. Mark 1:24’s ironic use — unclean spirits themselves correctly name Jesus ‘the Holy One of God’ — should be taught as retaining full doctrinal weight in translator notes even though this entry’s enforced risk tier remains as inherited from the baseline. Inherited from Romans package.
Peace
Approved rendering: سوله
Transliteration: sola
Doctrine: Peace with God
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
An asset here rather than primarily a risk: resonant with regional war-ending negotiation practice. Used in Mark’s dismissal-blessings (‘go in peace,’ 5:34) and discipleship exhortation (9:50). Inherited from Romans package.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: د خدای پاچاهي
Transliteration: da Khudai pachahi
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Distinguish God’s spiritual reign from competing claims to political-religious sovereignty, including explicit ‘Islamic Emirate’ state framing. Mark 1:15 is this book’s own programmatic thesis verse and must receive the same fixed, cross-document-consistent rendering the baseline mandates for Romans 1:16-17. Inherited from Romans package.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: غیر یهودیان
Transliteration: gheyr yahudian
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: امتونه
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Church
امتونه shares the loaded Ummah root and must never substitute. In Mark, context-sensitive: sometimes the Jew/Gentile theological contrast (7:26, 11:17, 13:10), sometimes simply ‘the nations’ worldly rulers’ (10:42) — translator judgment required per occurrence, and the more neutral نړیوال ملتونه may fit the latter sense better. Inherited from Romans package.
Glory
Approved rendering: جلال
Transliteration: jalal
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: δόξα
Category: Christology
Pashto’s Sufi poetic tradition uses jalal-adjacent vocabulary for divine majesty. In Mark, James and John request a share in this glory (10:37) before Jesus reveals it is reached only through the cup and baptism of suffering (10:38) — the irony must be preserved. Inherited from Romans package.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: د خدای قدرت
Transliteration: da Khudai qodrat
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Original: δύναμις θεοῦ
Category: God
Broadly compatible concept. In Mark chiefly miracle-working power (5:30, 6:2, 9:1, 13:25-26), an extension of the baseline’s Romans 1:16 sense. Inherited from Romans package.
Providence
Approved rendering: د خدای تدبیر
Transliteration: da Khudai tadbir
Doctrine: Providence
Original: — (cf. ἡτοίμασται, Mark 10:40; θέλημα, 14:36)
Category: God
God’s personal, purposive care; keep distinct from folk qadar fatalism. In Mark expressed through the Father’s reserved ordering of honors (10:40) and Christ’s Gethsemane submission (14:36), which is relational and anguished, not impersonal resignation. Inherited from Romans package.
David
Approved rendering: داود
Transliteration: Dawud
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant
Shared, positively-regarded Quranic prophet-king figure; supply the covenant-king typology pointing to Messiah explicitly. Background to Mark 12:35-37’s ‘how can David call him Lord?’ riddle. Inherited from Romans package.
Cup Of Suffering
Approved rendering: پیاله
Transliteration: piyala
Doctrine: The Necessity of the Cross
Original: ποτήριον
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. The literal object is completely ordinary in Pashtun tea culture, an asset for vividness, but the metaphorical extension to ‘appointed suffering’ (Mark 10:38; 14:36) is not native to Pashto idiom and must be taught explicitly at first use, cross-referenced across both occurrences (core passage and Gethsemane).
Demon
Approved rendering: دیو
Transliteration: dev
Doctrine: Jesus’ Authority over Sickness, Sin, and Nature
Rejected alternatives: جن (jinn)
Original: δαιμόνιον
Category: Spiritual Warfare
NEW TERM. دیو is a Persian/Pashto literary term (cf. Shahnameh) deliberately chosen over Quranic جن, a broader, morally mixed category with its own jurisprudence and folk-practice (ruqyah, amulets). Mark’s demons are uniformly hostile personal agents under a single evil authority, not a neutral species; using جن risks implying Jesus’s exorcisms are a variety of existing folk jinn-expulsion practice.
Sabbath
Approved rendering: سبت
Transliteration: sabt
Doctrine: Jesus’ Authority over Sickness, Sin, and Nature
Original: σάββατον
Category: Covenant
NEW TERM. Transliterated loanword, already used in Persian/Urdu Bible tradition. Pashtun Islamic practice has no direct Sabbath-observance equivalent (Friday/Jumu’ah is a communal prayer day, not a comparable rest-day); the concept requires background explanation, and Jesus’s specific point (his own authority over the Sabbath’s meaning, 2:27-28) must be distinguished from a comparative-religion ‘which day is correct’ discussion.
Fasting
Approved rendering: روژه نيول
Transliteration: roza neyol
Doctrine: Faith and Discipleship amid Fear
Original: νηστεύω
Category: Discipleship
NEW TERM. Strong positive practice-bridge shared with Ramadan fasting, but the underlying logic differs: Mark’s Jesus reframes fasting around his own presence as Bridegroom (2:19-20), a Christ-centered rationale distinct from Ramadan’s calendrical, communal-obligation framework.
Bridegroom
Approved rendering: زوم
Transliteration: zoom
Doctrine: The Kingdom of God Breaking In
Original: νυμφίος
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. No problematic Islamic-doctrinal collision, but requires explicit unpacking since without background the reader will not connect ‘bridegroom’ (Mark 2:19-20) to a messianic self-claim.
Satan
Approved rendering: شیطان
Transliteration: Shaytan
Doctrine: The Necessity of the Cross / Spiritual Warfare and Exorcism
Original: σατανᾶς
Category: Spiritual Warfare
NEW TERM. Broadly shared adversarial-spirit concept across Islamic and Christian tradition; the Quranic Iblis narrative differs in origin story from the biblical tempter/accuser tradition, but for Mark’s purposes (3:23-26, 8:33) the traditions are close enough that no major correction is required beyond noting differing origin accounts if asked.
Parable
Approved rendering: تمثیل
Transliteration: tamsil
Doctrine: The Messianic Secret
Original: παραβολή
Category: Messianic Secret
NEW TERM. Broadly compatible with existing Islamicate literary parabolic tradition; the specific doctrinal care required is not the word itself but Mark 4:11-12’s hardening/mystery motif (see ‘mystery’ entry).
Fear
Approved rendering: ویره / ويريدل
Transliteration: weera / weeredal
Doctrine: Faith and Discipleship amid Fear
Original: φοβέομαι
Category: Discipleship
NEW TERM. Fear is not inherently negative (cf. positive reverence), but Mark repeatedly contrasts unbelieving/paralyzing fear with trusting faith (4:40, 5:36, and recurring through 16:8). The Pashto rendering must keep this fear-versus-faith contrast audible across every recurrence.
Legion
Approved rendering: لیژن
Transliteration: lezhan
Doctrine: Jesus’ Authority over Sickness, Sin, and Nature
Original: Λεγιών
Category: Spiritual Warfare
NEW TERM. Roman military-unit name given by the multitude of unclean spirits (Mark 5:9). Naming an internal affliction after an occupying foreign army carries unusual resonance for a population with its own generational experience of foreign military occupation; the historical Roman referent should be briefly explained so the resonance is grounded rather than merely assumed.
Tradition
Approved rendering: رواج
Transliteration: rawaj
Doctrine: Human Tradition versus God’s Commandment
Rejected alternatives: روایت (riwayat)
Original: παράδοσις
Category: Covenant
NEW TERM. روایت, the technical Islamic hadith-transmission term, is deliberately avoided since it would suggest Jesus critiques the entire methodology of religious tradition-transmission (Mark 7:3-13) rather than his actual, narrower point that a specific human custom wrongly displaced a specific divine command.
Commandment
Approved rendering: حکم
Transliteration: hukm
Doctrine: Human Tradition versus God’s Commandment
Original: ἐντολή
Category: Covenant
NEW TERM. Standard and appropriately weighty, but also the technical term for a formal Islamic legal ruling (fiqh hukm); ensure Mark’s ‘commandment of God’ (7:8-9; 12:28-31) is heard as God’s own direct, relational instruction, not one ruling among a jurisprudential system administered by religious scholars.
Rejected
Approved rendering: رد کول
Transliteration: rad kawul
Doctrine: The Necessity of the Cross
Original: ἀποδοκιμάζω
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Renders ἀποδοκιμάζω, part of the Passion-prediction formula (8:31) and the cornerstone citation (12:10); connects directly to the rejected-then-vindicated cornerstone pattern.
Self Denial
Approved rendering: د ځان نه انکار کول
Transliteration: da zaan na inkar kawul
Doctrine: The Necessity of the Cross
Original: ἀπαρνέομαι
Category: Discipleship
NEW TERM. Renders ἀπαρνέομαι at Mark 8:34, the precondition for cross-bearing discipleship. Context must clearly distinguish this positive call from the later negative occurrence of the same verb — Peter’s denial of Christ himself (ch.14) — so the root is not read as morally uniform across both uses.
Unbelief
Approved rendering: بې ایمانی
Transliteration: be-imani
Doctrine: Faith and Discipleship amid Fear
Original: ἀπιστία
Category: Faith
NEW TERM. Renders ἀπιστία, Mark 9:24’s desperate father’s cry. Ordinary Pashto usage of بې ایمانی can carry a moral-dishonesty connotation; context must clarify this is about the strength of trust in Christ, preserving the father’s honest, sympathetic self-diagnosis rather than making him sound like he is confessing dishonesty.
Cause To Stumble
Approved rendering: د ګناه سبب کیدل
Transliteration: da gunah sabab kedal
Doctrine: (Discipleship ethics)
Original: σκανδαλίζω
Category: Ethics
NEW TERM. Renders σκανδαλίζω, Mark 9:42-47. The accompanying millstone/self-mutilation hyperbole requires careful pastoral framing as hyperbolic warning, not literal instruction, especially for a lower-literacy, oral-culture readership.
Child
Approved rendering: ماشوم
Transliteration: mashoom
Doctrine: Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness
Original: παιδίον
Category: Kingdom
NEW TERM. Jesus’s chosen image for kingdom-receptivity and true greatness (Mark 9:36-37, 10:13-16). The socially powerless model true greatness and are personally identified with Christ himself; teach in direct connection with the core passage’s servanthood doctrine.
Temple Den Of Robbers
Approved rendering: کوټلی / د غلانو کوهنه
Transliteration: kotali / da ghalaano kohana
Doctrine: The Temple and Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: ἱερόν / σπήλαιον λῃστῶν
Category: Church
NEW TERM. Mark 11:15-17, quoting Isaiah 56:7 and Jeremiah 7:11. Connects directly to ‘a house of prayer for all nations’ and the Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine; must not be read merely as generic anti-clericalism or anti-commercialism disconnected from its specific worship-access, all-nations point.
Love Agapao
Approved rendering: مینه کول
Transliteration: mina kawul
Doctrine: (Ethics — the Greatest Commandment)
Original: ἀγαπάω
Category: Ethics
NEW TERM. Mark 12:28-31, quoting the Shema and Leviticus 19:18. Regional Sufi devotional poetry (Rahman Baba) provides genuine positive resonance for wholehearted love of God; the pairing of love-of-God with love-of-neighbor as summarizing the whole law should be taught as fulfilling, not abolishing, the commandments discussed in Mark 7.
Tribulation
Approved rendering: سختي
Transliteration: sakhti
Doctrine: Faith and Discipleship amid Fear
Original: θλῖψις
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM. Renders θλῖψις, Mark 13:19, 13:24. Directly and immediately relevant, not merely theoretical, for this specific persecuted readership; should be taught with pastoral realism connecting to the real θλῖψις many readers already experience.
Watch Alert
Approved rendering: پام کول / خبردار اوسل
Transliteration: paam kawul / khabardaar osal
Doctrine: (Discipleship / Eschatology)
Original: γρηγορέω
Category: Discipleship
NEW TERM. Renders γρηγορέω, the apocalyptic discourse’s repeated closing command (13:33-37), echoed at Gethsemane (14:34, 37-38). Preserve consistent vocabulary across both passages so the literary echo remains visible.
Passover
Approved rendering: فسح / پسخه
Transliteration: Fasah / Paskha
Doctrine: (Covenant background)
Original: πάσχα
Category: Covenant
NEW TERM. Mark 14:1, 12-16, the Last Supper’s setting. Requires Old Testament background-teaching (the Exodus, the Passover lamb) to be meaningful; without it, the Last Supper’s sacrificial logic will not land for a Pashto-speaking audience unfamiliar with the Exodus narrative.
Mock Ridicule
Approved rendering: ملنډې وهل
Transliteration: malande wahal
Doctrine: Historicity of the Crucifixion
Original: ἐμπαίζω
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Renders ἐμπαίζω, Mark 15:16-20, 29-32. In an honor-shame culture, public mockery of this kind is understood immediately and viscerally as maximal, deliberate shaming; should be taught as intensifying the weight of what Christ endured, making his vindication all the more powerful a reversal within an honor-shame framework. Keep distinct from ‘shame’ (the disciple’s own potential shame of Christ).
Angel
Approved rendering: پرښته
Transliteration: preshta
Doctrine: (Resurrection narrative, contextual)
Original: ἄγγελος
Category: God
NEW TERM. Mark 16:5, the tomb-messenger, described in the earliest manuscripts simply as ‘a young man.’ Angels are a shared, positively regarded category across Islamic and Christian tradition, unlike the more contested Jibril/Holy Spirit identification; translators may wish to preserve Mark’s own text-critical reticence literally with a footnote rather than harmonizing to more angelic parallel-Gospel language.
Low Risk Terms
Prophecy
Approved rendering: نبوت
Transliteration: nabuwat
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Original: προφητεία / γραφή
Category: Covenant
Low independent risk beyond the prophet entry’s own caution. Fulfilled narratively throughout Mark (e.g. 7:6-7, 14:27). Inherited from Romans package.
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: شکر
Transliteration: shukr
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστέω
Category: Faith
Shukr is also a major Islamic virtue; broadly compatible, low risk. Preserve the identical ‘took/gave thanks/broke/gave’ verb sequence across Mark 6:41, 8:6, and 14:22-23 so the deliberate narrative echo toward the Last Supper is recognizable. Inherited from Romans package.
Scribe
Approved rendering: د دین عالمان
Transliteration: da din olamaa
Doctrine: (Historical opposition group)
Original: γραμματεύς
Category: Historical
NEW TERM. Historical proper designation, a recurring opponent-group in Mark. Avoid anachronistic over-identification with contemporary religious authorities (mullahs, olama) in a way that imports present-day social tension into the first-century narrative.
Pharisee
Approved rendering: فريسي
Transliteration: Farisi
Doctrine: (Historical opposition group)
Original: Φαρισαῖος
Category: Historical
NEW TERM. Transliterated proper group-name; same anachronism caution as ‘scribe.‘
Beelzebul
Approved rendering: بعل زبول
Transliteration: Ba’al-Zabul
Doctrine: (Historical/contextual)
Original: Βεελζεβούλ
Category: Historical
NEW TERM. Unfamiliar proper name requiring a footnote gloss (‘prince of the demons,’ as Mark 3:22 itself glosses it); no independent doctrinal collision risk.
Talitha Koum
Approved rendering: طلیتا قوم (زويي، پاڅه!)
Transliteration: talitha koum (zoyay, paatsa!)
Doctrine: (Textual/stylistic)
Original: ταλιθὰ κούμ
Category: Textual-Critical
NEW TERM. Aramaic, preserved untranslated by Mark himself (5:41) then glossed. Preserve the transliteration exactly, followed by the Pashto gloss in brackets, mirroring Mark’s own bilingual technique; no doctrinal collision, purely stylistic/text-critical.
Ephphatha
Approved rendering: اېفَتا (پرانستل شه!)
Transliteration: ephphatha (praanistal sha!)
Doctrine: (Textual/stylistic)
Original: ἐφφαθά
Category: Textual-Critical
NEW TERM. Aramaic, preserved untranslated by Mark (7:34) then glossed. Preserve the transliteration with gloss, following Mark’s own bilingual technique; no doctrinal collision.
Have Mercy
Approved rendering: رحم وکړه
Transliteration: raham wu-kra
Doctrine: (Faith, contextual)
Original: ἐλεέω
Category: Faith
NEW TERM. Renders ἐλεέω, Mark 10:47-48. Broadly compatible with Islamicate devotional vocabulary (al-Rahman, al-Rahim); no major correction needed beyond ensuring the cry is heard as addressed to Jesus as one with authority/ability to grant it.
Hosanna
Approved rendering: هوشعنا
Transliteration: Hosha’na
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant and Messianic Promise
Original: ὡσαννά
Category: Worship
NEW TERM. Untranslated Hebrew/Aramaic acclamation quoting Psalm 118:25-26 (Mark 11:9-10). Requires a footnote gloss (‘save now!’); the accompanying quotation ‘blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’ reuses the Critical-risk ‘lord’ vocabulary and should be flagged for consistency with that entry.
Vineyard
Approved rendering: تاکستان
Transliteration: taakestaan
Doctrine: (Kingdom, contextual parable image)
Original: ἀμπελών
Category: Kingdom
NEW TERM. Mark 12:1-11, setting for the Parable of the Wicked Tenants, drawing on Isaiah 5’s vineyard-Israel imagery. Straightforward agricultural image; doctrinal weight lies in the following cornerstone citation.
Sanhedrin
Approved rendering: مشرانو شورا
Transliteration: masharaano shura
Doctrine: (Historical/contextual)
Original: συνέδριον
Category: Historical
NEW TERM. Mark 14:55, 15:1, the Jewish ruling council that tried Jesus. Recommend a historical note distinguishing it from a contemporary tribal jirga/shura despite structural similarity, to avoid anachronistic conflation.
