Linguistic Gap Analysis
Linguistic Gap Analysis: 3 John — English → Pashto
Purpose and Scope
This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 8 for the 3 John curriculum (destination language: Pashto). It maps the destination language’s available vocabulary against the theological load of 3 John, identifies missing vocabulary and crowded semantic neighborhoods, decides transliteration-vs-paraphrase strategy for each gap, and ranks this letter’s highest-risk ambiguities. Findings here are load-bearing inputs to the downstream semantic analysis (07) and core glossary (08) steps and must not be contradicted by them; where this analysis and those later artifacts overlap, they are already in agreement by design.
Doctrines in scope: Hospitality to Traveling Ministers; Imitating Good rather than Evil; Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes); Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius); Truth and Christian Fellowship.
Core passage: 3 John 1:1–14.
Full-Book Chapter Coverage Statement
3 John is a single-chapter book (1:1–14), and its entire text is coextensive with the assigned core passage. There is no additional chapter material outside the core passage to review separately; this analysis therefore already constitutes full-book coverage. No verses are silently omitted — every verse of 1:1–14 is represented in at least one row of the matrices below or in the surrounding discussion.
This curriculum sits downstream of, and must not contradict, the baseline Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json, 12_ai_translation_requirements.md). Where a term already carries a baseline ruling (e.g., خدای for God, کلیسا for church, سوله for peace), that ruling is reused exactly and is noted as [BASELINE REUSE] rather than re-derived here.
1. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix
| Doctrine | Key term(s) | Available Pashto term(s) | Weakness / Collision | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | ξένος (guest/stranger) | مېلمه (melma) | Direct collision with Pashtunwali’s melmastia code, in which hosting a guest customarily creates an honor-debt/reciprocity obligation on the guest — the same cultural default already flagged as High risk in the baseline’s “grace” entry. | Use مېلمه but pair every occurrence with explicit teaching that gospel hospitality (esp. v.7, “taking nothing from the pagans”) expects no repayment — melmastia stripped of its reciprocity logic. |
| Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | προπέμπω (send on one’s way, materially) | No single word; nearest options د لاره ښودل (show the way, too weak), الوداع کول (bid farewell, loses material sense) | Both native candidates lose the technical “provision for the journey” sense entirely, reducing an act of costly material partnership to a polite social gesture. | Missing vocabulary → use descriptive compound phrase: د سفر لپاره مرسته کول (“to help/provide for the journey”). |
| Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | ἀξίως τοῦ θεοῦ (worthily of God) | د خدای وړ ډول | Risk of being read as merely “generous by Pashtun social custom” rather than a standard set by God himself. | Retain explicit comparison to God’s standard in every occurrence; never abbreviate to a generic “well” or “properly.” |
| Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | συνεργός (fellow worker) | همکار | Generic secular “co-worker/business partner” sense by default. | Qualify as د رښتیا همکار (“fellow worker for the truth”) every time; never leave bare. |
| Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | ἐθνικός (pagans/unbelieving outsiders) | غیر مؤمنان (recommended); کافر/کافران (rejected) | کافر carries severe political/social danger for a persecuted minority readership if this material is discovered; مechanically reusing Romans’ غیر یهودیان would wrongly import a Jew/Gentile redemptive-historical category into a believer/non-believer contrast. | Use غیر مؤمنان; do not reuse baseline غیر یهودیان; never use کافر. |
| Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | ὄνομα, absolute “the Name” | (د عیسی مسیح) نوم | Bare “the Name” collides with asma al-husna, the 99 Names of Allah, a major devotional category in regional Islam. | Always gloss at first occurrence as “for the sake of the name of Jesus Christ”; never leave the noun unqualified. |
| Imitating Good rather than Evil | μιμέομαι (imitate) | پیروي کول (recommended); تقلید (rejected) | تقلید is the specific Islamic jurisprudential term for unreasoned submission to a jurist’s prior ruling (opposite of ijtihad) — it would reframe the exhortation as legal-precedent submission rather than personal moral emulation of an observed example. | Use native پیروي کول throughout; flag as forbidden-substitution alongside the baseline’s existing forbidden list. |
| Imitating Good rather than Evil | κακός/ἀγαθός (evil/good) | بد, ښه (+ compounds بد کوونکی, ښه کوونکی) | None significant; standard native moral vocabulary, well understood. | Direct use; Low risk. |
| Imitating Good rather than Evil | ὁράω, “has not seen God” (v.11) | لیدلی دی | Literal rendering risks a physical-sight reading. | Teach idiomatically as relational knowledge of God, consistent with Johannine usage elsewhere. |
| Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes) | πρεσβύτερος (elder) | مشر [BASELINE-ADJACENT: same word ruling as established in bible_term_registry.json] | Identical word to the Pashtunwali tribal/jirga chieftain or family patriarch title, an office carrying binding customary legal authority, hereditary expectation, and jirga arbitration power. | Always qualify: مشر (د کلیسا مشر); never leave bare, in any occurrence in this letter. |
| Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes) | φιλοπρωτεύω (loves to be first) | No single word; د مخکښۍ مینه لري / لومړیتوب غواړي | Pashtunwali’s nang (honor) code often views status-seeking through generosity and visible leadership positively; the text’s condemnation is narrower and sharper than a blanket anti-ambition statement. | Missing vocabulary → descriptive phrase, with explicit teaching that the sin condemned is self-exalting control within the believing community, not leadership or generosity as such. |
| Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes) | ἐκβάλλω (expel from church) | له کلیسا نه شړل | For a persecuted, often secret single-congregation readership, wrongful expulsion may cut off a believer’s only safe community entirely — materially higher real-world stakes than in multi-congregation contexts. | Retain literal force (“expel/cast out”); do not soften to “ask to leave”; flag every occurrence for theologian review per baseline escalation convention. |
| Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes) | ἐπιδέχομαι (receive/accept) | منل | Same verb covers two distinct referents in this letter (accepting apostolic authority, v.9; hosting guests, v.10) — a genuine polysemy risk if not tracked per occurrence. | Context-sensitive rendering; annotate which sense is active at each occurrence in the segment cache. |
| Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes) | κωλύω (forbid/hinder) | منع کول | Could be read as mere disapproval rather than active coercive obstruction. | Retain the active-obstruction sense in surrounding phrasing; do not weaken to passive disagreement. |
| Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes) | ἐκκλησία (church) | کلیسا [BASELINE REUSE] | N/A — already resolved in baseline; never امت. | Reuse exactly; reinforce “small/secret house-gathering” real-world referent. |
| Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius) | μαρτυρέω / μαρτυρία (testify/testimony) | شاهدي (ورکول) (recommended); شهادت/شهيد (rejected) | شهادت is the Islamic creedal confession (Shahada); شهيد is specifically “martyr” — an intensely loaded regional term. Either would risk implying invocation of the Islamic creed, or in a persecution context, dangerously importing martyrdom vocabulary where the text means only a truthful character reference. This is the sharpest single collision in the letter (occurs 3x: vv. 3, 6, 12). | Use neutral, everyday شاهدي (courtroom/daily-use “testimony”) paired with ورکول; forbid the ش-ه-د root cognates outright; theologian review at every occurrence. |
| Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius) | ἀληθής (true) | رښتینی/رښتیني (recommended); حقیقي (rejected) | حقیقي shares the same Sufi-mystical loading as حقیقت (see below). | Use رښتینی/رښتیني, matching the noun-form decision for ἀλήθεια. |
| Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius) | πιστός (faithful) | وفادار | Overlaps with tribal loyalty/nang vocabulary and patron-client fidelity language. | Anchor explicitly to faithfulness in gospel-partnership; keep distinct from the noun ایمان (faith). |
| Truth and Christian Fellowship | ἀλήθεια (truth) | رښتیا (recommended); حقیقت (rejected) | حقیقت is the third of the four traditional Sufi mystical stages (Shari’a–Tariqa–Haqiqat–Ma’rifat), an esoteric reality for advanced initiates — not the shared, public, morally-binding truth 3 John describes (its most concentrated theme, 6 occurrences of the noun in 14 verses). | Use native رښتیا throughout; forbidden-substitution status for حقیقت, parallel to the baseline’s preference for native over loaded Arabic-derived terms. |
| Truth and Christian Fellowship | ἀγάπη/ἀγαπάω (love) | مینه | Shared with romantic-love and regional Sufi love-mysticism poetic vocabulary (Rahman Baba tradition) — devotional asset but risk of over-mystification or romantic misreading. | Anchor explicitly to committed, self-giving, action-evidenced love (illustrated concretely by hospitality, v.6), not sentiment or mystical absorption. |
| Truth and Christian Fellowship | ἀδελφός (brother) | ورور/ورونه | Strong Pashtunwali blood-tribe (qawm/khel) solidarity and badal-obligation connotations. | Teach explicitly as kinship constituted by shared faith in Christ, not lineage — ties to baseline’s “Christian Identity in Christ” doctrine. |
| Truth and Christian Fellowship | φίλος (friend) | ملګری/ملګري | Risk of collapsing into ورونه (brother) and losing the Greek’s deliberate register shift at the letter’s close (v.14). | Preserve the shift; do not use one word for both ἀδελφός and φίλος. |
| Truth and Christian Fellowship | τέκνα (spiritual children) | روحاني اولاد | Bare اولاد/زامن risks confusion with the biological/patrilineal descent categories already Critical in the baseline’s “adoption” entry. | Always qualify روحاني (spiritual); never leave bare. |
| Truth and Christian Fellowship | ψυχή (soul) | ساه / رواني حالت | روح alone risks confusion with روح القدس (Holy Spirit), baseline Critical term. | Avoid روح in isolation; use ساه or رواني حالت. |
| Truth and Christian Fellowship | εἰρήνη (peace, epistolary) | سوله [BASELINE REUSE, context-adapted] | None new; risk is only conflating the closing farewell-blessing sense with the distinct Romans 5:1 justification doctrine. | Reuse سوله; teach the two contexts (farewell-blessing vs. justification-peace) as related but distinct. |
2. Missing Vocabulary vs. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods
2.1 Missing Vocabulary (true lexical gaps — no existing Pashto word covers the sense)
These Greek terms have no single-word Pashto equivalent and require a descriptive/compound phrase. This is a gap of coverage, not of collision — the risk is under-translation (flattening a technical sense into an everyday one), not doctrinal collision with a competing religious system.
| Term | Gap | Required strategy |
|---|---|---|
| προπέμπω | No word distinguishes “materially provision a traveler” from a bare social farewell. | Compound phrase: د سفر لپاره مرسته کول |
| ἀξίως τοῦ θεοῦ | No adverb carries “to a standard fitting God himself.” | Phrase retaining explicit God-comparison: د خدای وړ ډول |
| ὑπολαμβάνω | No verb distinguishes “assume material responsibility for” from ordinary “receive.” | Compound phrase: مالي مرسته کول / پالنه کول |
| φιλοπρωτεύω | No single word for “craves being first/preeminent.” | Descriptive phrase: د مخکښۍ مینه لري / لومړیتوب غواړي |
| λόγοις πονηροῖς φλυαρῶν | No single word for “malicious, slanderous rambling talk” as a moral category. | Compound phrase: بد سخنۍ کول / تور لګول |
| συνεργός (in this letter’s specific sense) | همکار exists but is generic; the gospel-partnership sense has no dedicated word. | Qualify: همکار (د رښتیا همکار) |
Implication for Phase 2: every descriptive phrase above must be locked in translation memory as a fixed compound, not re-generated ad hoc per segment, or consistency across the (single-chapter) curriculum will fail the baseline’s cross-document consistency rule.
2.2 Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods (existing Pashto words carry strong competing associations that must be fenced)
These are not missing-word problems; the Pashto word exists and is the natural choice, but it already has a dominant meaning in Islamic theology or Pashtunwali custom that will crowd out or distort 3 John’s sense unless explicitly fenced off at first use and reinforced.
| Pashto word | Its dominant existing association | Fence required |
|---|---|---|
| مشر | Pashtunwali tribal/jirga chieftain, family patriarch (binding customary legal authority) | Always bind with د کلیسا (of the church) |
| ورور | Qawm/khel blood-tribe solidarity, badal obligation | Explicit “kinship by faith, not blood” teaching note at first occurrence |
| مینه | Romantic love; Sufi love-mysticism (Rahman Baba tradition) | Anchor to hospitality-evidenced, self-giving love (v.6) |
| مېلمه | Melmastia reciprocity-creating hospitality code | Explicit “expects no repayment” teaching note (parallel to baseline’s grace entry) |
| نوم (bare “the Name”) | Asma al-husna, the 99 Names of Allah | Mandatory gloss at first use: (د عیسی مسیح) نوم |
| رښتیا vs حقیقت | حقیقت = Sufi mystical third-stage esoteric reality | رښتیا locked in as the only permitted rendering; حقیقت forbidden |
| شاهدي vs شهادت/شهيد | Shahada (creedal confession) / religious-political martyrdom | شهادت/شهيد forbidden outright; شاهدي (ورکول) is the only permitted rendering |
| پیروي کول vs تقلید | تقلید = Islamic jurisprudential unreasoned submission to precedent (opposite of ijtihad) | تقلید forbidden; پیروي کول is the only permitted rendering |
| غیر مؤمنان vs کافر | کافر = severely loaded apostate/infidel term with real persecution-context danger | کافر forbidden outright for safety reasons, independent of doctrinal accuracy |
| وفادار | Tribal loyalty (nang), patron-client fidelity | Anchor explicitly to gospel-partnership faithfulness, distinct from ایمان |
3. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions
| Category | Decision | Examples | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proper names with no prior Pashto Bible precedent | Phonetic transliteration, locked for consistent reuse | ګایوس (Gaius), دیمتریوس (Demetrius), دیوترفیس (Diotrephes) | 3 John’s addressee and named individuals have no attested prior Pashto Bible translation tradition to draw on (unlike Paul/پولوس or David/داود in the baseline); a single consistent phonetic form must be fixed now to avoid drift across any future Pashto materials referencing this letter. |
| Established proper names already fixed in the baseline | Reuse baseline form exactly | عیسی مسیح (Jesus Christ) | [BASELINE REUSE] — no new decision required. |
| Technical single-referent theological nouns with a safe native equivalent | Paraphrase-free direct native word | رښتیا (truth), مینه (love), ورور (brother), مېلمه (guest) | A native word exists and is intelligible; the risk is contextual fencing (Section 2.2), not absence of vocabulary, so paraphrase would be unnecessarily verbose and would weaken register. |
| Technical single-referent nouns with a dangerous native/Arabic-derived equivalent | Reject the loaded word outright; substitute a different, unloaded native/plain word (not a paraphrase, a different term) | شاهدي instead of شهادت/شهيد; پیروي کول instead of تقلید; غیر مؤمنان instead of کافر; رښتیا instead of حقیقت | These are forbidden-substitution decisions, following the exact pattern already established in the baseline (شریعت→ناموس, امت→کلیسا, شراکت→ملګرتیا, پاکوالی→تقدیس). |
| Compound/technical actions with no single Pashto word | Descriptive multi-word paraphrase, locked as a fixed compound in translation memory | د سفر لپاره مرسته کول (send on journey); د خدای وړ ډول (worthily of God); د مخکښۍ مینه لري (loves to be first); بد سخنۍ کول (malicious talk) | No native single word exists; ad hoc paraphrase per segment would fracture consistency, so the phrase must be fixed once and reused verbatim, per the baseline’s cross-document consistency rule. |
| Absolute/bare theological shorthand requiring disambiguation | Paraphrase with mandatory first-use gloss, then may shorten | (د عیسی مسیح) نوم for bare “the Name” | The Greek’s bare absolute usage is itself the risk (it invites the 99-Names association); an explicit gloss neutralizes this without permanently lengthening every subsequent occurrence. |
4. Ranked List of Highest-Risk Ambiguities in 3 John
Ranked by combined severity of doctrinal distortion risk and real-world (safety/social) consequence for this letter’s persecuted, house-church readership.
-
μαρτυρέω/μαρτυρία → شاهدي, NOT شهادت/شهيد (Critical). The single sharpest collision in the letter: Shahada (creedal confession) and “martyr(dom)” are both religiously and politically explosive terms; misuse here could either imply an Islamic creedal act or dangerously suggest martyrdom vocabulary in a context where believers’ safety already depends on discretion. Occurs 3x (vv. 3, 6, 12) — every occurrence requires theologian review.
-
πρεσβύτερος → مشر (High). Identical word to a binding-authority Pashtunwali tribal/jirga office; unqualified use would import customary legal authority, hereditary status, and jirga arbitration expectations onto the Elder’s pastoral office.
-
ξένος → مېلمه (High). Direct collision with the melmastia reciprocity code — the same cultural default already flagged Critical-adjacent in the baseline’s “grace” doctrine — creating risk that gospel hospitality is read as honor-debt-generating rather than freely given.
-
ἀδελφός → ورور (High). Risk of collapsing spiritual, faith-constituted kinship into Pashtunwali’s blood-tribe (qawm/khel) solidarity and badal-obligation framework, undermining the letter’s implicit challenge to tribal identity categories.
-
ὄνομα (absolute “the Name”) → نوم (High). Unglossed use directly risks resonance with asma al-husna (the 99 Names of Allah), a major devotional category, obscuring that this is specifically Christ’s name and authority.
-
ἐθνικός → غیر مؤمنان, NOT کافر (High). Doctrinal risk (wrongly importing Romans’ Jew/Gentile category) compounded by acute physical safety risk if the loaded term کافر were used and this material were discovered by hostile actors.
-
φιλοπρωτεύω → د مخکښۍ مینه لري (High). Cultural risk runs opposite to most other entries: Pashtunwali’s nang code often views status-seeking through visible generosity/leadership positively, so the text’s specific condemnation of self-exalting control within the believing community could be either missed entirely or overcorrected into a blanket anti-ambition message.
-
ἐκβάλλω → له کلیسا نه شړل (High). Doctrinally straightforward, but real-world stakes are unusually severe: for a reader whose single house-church may be their only safe Christian community, wrongful expulsion is not merely a leadership-ethics illustration but a live pastoral danger.
-
μιμέομαι → پیروي کول, NOT تقلید (High). Using تقلید would silently reframe the letter’s call to personal moral emulation as juristic submission to precedent, inverting the text’s individual-conscience appeal.
-
ἀλήθεια/ἀληθής → رښتیا/رښتینی, NOT حقیقت/حقیقي (High). As 3 John’s single most concentrated theme (6 occurrences of the noun in 14 verses), a slide toward the Sufi-mystical حقیقت reading would relocate the letter’s dominant category from public, lived, morally-binding truth into esoteric mystical experience — a subtle but pervasive risk given how frequently the term recurs.
Medium-tier ambiguities worth monitoring but not requiring theologian escalation: ἀγάπη/مینه (romantic/mystical over-reading), πιστός/وفادار (tribal-loyalty overlap), τέκνα/روحاني اولاد (adoption-doctrine confusion if unqualified), ἐπιδέχομαι/منل (polysemy between “accept authority” and “host a guest” requiring per-occurrence tracking).
5. Summary of Recommendations Carried Forward
- Extend the baseline’s forbidden-substitution list with: شهادت/شهيد (for testimony/witness), تقلید (for imitate), حقیقت/حقیقي (for truth/true), کافر/کافران (for pagans/unbelievers).
- Lock all descriptive compound phrases identified in Section 2.1 into translation memory verbatim before Phase 2 begins, to prevent per-segment re-generation drift.
- Require a first-use gloss rule for ὄνομα (“the Name”) analogous to the existing first-use-explanation convention for technical theological terms in
12_ai_translation_requirements.md. - Flag πρεσβύτερος, ἀδελφός, ξένος, φιλοπρωτεύω, ἐκβάλλω, μαρτυρέω/μαρτυρία, and μιμέομαι for mandatory theologian review at every occurrence, consistent with the baseline’s Critical/High review-routing convention.
- Carry the ἐθνικός vs. baseline ἔθνη distinction forward explicitly so Phase 2 workers do not mechanically reuse غیر یهودیان from the Romans translation memory in this letter’s different sense.
These findings are the required input to 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md, which must not depart from the term decisions and risk tiers established here without an explicit, documented rationale.
This analysis extends, and does not contradict, the baseline Pashto Romans Language Package. All terms already resolved in translation_memory.json are reused exactly as recorded there.
