Executive Summary

Executive Summary: 2 Peter — English → Pashto Language Package

Why it matters

2 Peter is the doctrinal keystone this pipeline has been missing on inspiration of Scripture and the certainty of Christ’s return — and it introduces the single highest-risk phrase in the entire Pashto Bible-translation pipeline to date: “partakers of the divine nature” (1:4). For a persecuted, Muslim-background Pashto house-church readership, this letter puts the sharpest tawhid-collision term of any curriculum so far directly beside the letter’s core teaching passage (1:16-21), which is itself the NT’s clearest single statement on how Scripture was written. Getting both right — without ever brushing the ش-ر-ک (shirk) root, and without collapsing inspiration into Islamic wahy-style dictation — is the central task of this Language Package.

Key findings

  • Full-book scope, three chapters, 19 doctrines. Every chapter (1, 2, 3) carries load-bearing doctrinal content; none was skipped or treated as filler. The doctrine matrix consolidates to 8 Critical, 7 High, and 4 Medium doctrines — zero Low-risk doctrines in this entire letter.
  • 81 enforced glossary terms, 23 inherited exactly from the Romans baseline (God, Jesus, Christ, Lord, Son of God, Holy Spirit, Father, Apostle, Faith, Righteousness, Grace, Peace, Holy, Election, Called, Calling, Kingdom of God, Sin, Glory, Prophet, Prophecy, Fellowship, Salvation) and 58 newly introduced by this curriculum, including 7 proper names.
  • 38 terms rated Critical or High risk (17 Critical, 21 High), each requiring mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence per the escalation rules — a notably higher concentration than the Romans baseline, reflecting 2 Peter’s density of deity, inspiration, and eschatology claims within just three short chapters.
  • The single highest-risk item in this entire pipeline: “partakers of the divine nature” (κοινωνοὶ θείας φύσεως, 1:4). A careless rendering is the literal linguistic shape of shirk, the gravest sin in Islamic theology, in one direction, or a tawhid-violating deification claim in the other — resolved only through a mandatory fixed periphrasis routed exclusively through the ملګرتیا word-family, never شریک/شراکت.
  • A genuinely new security-sensitive category: “false prophet” (درواغجن پیغمبر, 2:1) collides directly with پیغمبر, Muhammad’s own defining Quranic title — a risk that is not merely theological but carries real safety implications for translators and distributors in restrictive contexts.
  • Strong positive cultural bridges exist and should be actively used, not just risk-managed: eyewitness testimony (parallels hadith isnad culture), judgment and new-heavens/new-earth language (parallels Yawm al-Qiyama and Q14:48), brotherly affection (parallels Pashtunwali kinship loyalty), and the “bought”/ransom motif (parallels diyya blood-money categories).

Risks

  • Critical (8 doctrines, mandatory theologian review, zero exceptions): Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture; Deity and Sonship of Christ; Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption; False Teachers and Their Judgment; The Certainty of Christ’s Return; The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment; Lordship of Christ; Salvation.
  • High (7 doctrines, mandatory theologian review): Eyewitness Testimony and Apostolic Authority; Growing in Christian Virtue; Divine Calling and Election; Historical Certainty of Divine Judgment; Patience of God’s Timing; Repentance and Salvation; Canon and Inspired Apostolic Writings.
  • Compounding risk: several Critical/High terms cluster inside the core passage itself (1:16-21 contains myths, eyewitness, majestic glory, beloved, more sure, morning star, private interpretation, and carried along in six verses), meaning the curriculum’s theological center of gravity is also its highest-density risk zone — Phase 2 review capacity should be weighted accordingly.
  • Over-assimilation risk (a subtler failure mode than collision): judgment and new-creation vocabulary overlap so favorably with Islamic eschatology that a technically faithful word-for-word rendering can still lose 2 Peter’s specifically Christ-centered criterion (response to Christ, not deeds-weighing) without an explicit distinguishing clause at every occurrence.

Opportunities

  • Repentance (μετάνοια) and God’s patience (μακροθυμία) are genuine gap-fills for the wider Language Package — absent from the Romans baseline — and should be formally adopted as permanent additions to the pipeline’s cross-curriculum vocabulary going forward, not treated as one-off 2 Peter terms.
  • Hadith isnad culture’s reverence for eyewitness chains gives “eyewitness” (ἐπόπτης, 1:16) unusually strong native resonance for teaching apostolic authority — a positive bridge largely unavailable to less orally-oriented target languages in this pipeline.
  • The Pashtunwali brotherhood/kinship default, normally a risk to fence (as with tribal-lineage election concerns), becomes a genuine asset for teaching φιλαδελφία (brotherly affection, 1:7) once explicitly extended beyond blood-tribal boundaries to the whole multi-ethnic church.
  1. Route all Phase 2 translation of 1:4 and its surrounding context through mandatory theologian review with zero exceptions, treating any شریک/شراکت back-translation hit as an automatic hard-fail, not a flag.
  2. Require the fixed OT/NT-internal contextual anchor clause on every single occurrence of “false prophet,” and brief distribution/security planning accordingly given the real-world risk profile.
  3. Load both the Romans and 2 Peter translation memories and requirements documents together for every Phase 2 session on this curriculum, per the extended pre-flight checklist, to guarantee cross-curriculum term consistency for shared readers.
  4. Weight theologian review scheduling toward chapters 1 and 3, where Critical-risk density is highest (deity/sonship, inspiration, divine nature, parousia, day of the Lord, patience/repentance all cluster there), while still fully covering chapter 2’s False Teachers doctrine given its unique security profile.
  5. Propose “repentance” and “God’s patience” for formal promotion into the shared cross-curriculum baseline glossary, given their now-demonstrated recurrence value beyond this single letter.
