Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: James 1–5 (English → Pashto)
Purpose
This document is the full doctrine matrix for the James curriculum, extending the baseline Romans Language Package for Pashto without contradicting it. It is produced in Phase 1 Step 4 and is downstream of 08_core_glossary.md (Step 1) and assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (Step 3, already generated). Risk tiers below are identical to doctrine_risk_registry.json and must not be altered here. This document adds the supporting-passage matrix, translation-risk rationale, and full chapter-by-chapter coverage audit required by the PRD’s full-book-coverage mandate.
Core passage: James 2:14-26 (Faith and Works) is the theological anchor of the curriculum but not its scope boundary. All five chapters are analyzed below.
1. Full Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Pashto Doctrine Name | Risk | Supporting Passages (James) | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Faith and Works | ایمان او کارونه | Critical | 1:22-25; 2:1-13 (royal law); 2:14-26 (core); 3:13 | James 2:24 (“justified by works, not by faith alone”) uses the same δικαιόω verb and the same Genesis 15:6 citation as the baseline’s Critical imputed_righteousness/justification entries, but argues evidentially (faith proven genuine by its fruit), not forensically (God’s declarative act). Unharmonized, this reads as confirming Islamic mizan (deeds-weighing) soteriology exactly where the baseline worked hardest to prevent that reading. “Works” (کارونه) must stay native, never اعمال. Every occurrence requires a standing harmonizing footnote distinguishing James’s vindication sense from Paul’s forensic sense. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Trials and the Testing of Faith | ازموینې او د ایمان ازمویل | High | 1:2-4; 1:12-15; 5:7-11 (Job) | Single Greek word-family πειρασμός covers both faith-refining external hardship (ازموینه) and internal enticement to sin (وسوسه); James 1:13 explicitly denies God is the source of the latter. Two distinct Pashto terms are required so readers do not conclude God tempts toward sin, and so the shared devil-figure/waswas expectation of purely external temptation is corrected. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Wisdom from Above | له پاسه حکمت | Medium | 1:5-8; 3:13-18 | حکمت carries strong positive resonance with Islamic hikmah tradition — a genuine asset — but risks remaining generalized/philosophical unless anchored to 3:17’s specific named fruit (pure, peaceable, gentle, full of mercy) and to its divine source via undivided-faith request (1:5-8), not human attainment or mystical insight. | Native speaker review |
| 4 | Favoritism and the Poor | جانبداري او غریبان | High | 2:1-13; 5:1-6 | Directly opposes Pashtunwali’s melmastia etiquette of deferential treatment toward wealthy/honorable guests. James 2:5 (God choosing the poor as heirs) and 2:1 (favoritism as sin against “the Lord of glory”) require deliberate teaching against a deeply held cultural default, not an assumption that partiality is self-evidently wrong here. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Taming the Tongue | د ژبې نری ساتل | High | 1:19-20, 26; 3:1-12; 4:11-12; 5:9, 12 | In an honor-shame culture where insult, gossip, or public accusation can trigger badal (retaliation) and escalate to blood feud, James 3:6’s “the tongue sets the whole course of life on fire” carries acute real-world social and physical danger, not merely rhetorical warning. Teaching must engage this concrete stakes-raising context. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Worldliness versus Friendship with God | د نړۍ مینه او د خدای سره ملګرتیا | High | 1:27; 4:1-12 | Contains a Critical-severity internal pressure point: James 4:4’s metaphorical “adulteresses” (μοιχαλίδες), if decontextualized, risks being heard as a literal accusation of زنا with potentially lethal honor-code consequences. James 4:7’s “submit to God” also collides with Islam’s root meaning of submission and with Pashtunwali’s competing loyalty codes (nang, tribal-elder authority). Both require mandatory explanatory framing at every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Prayer and Healing | دعا او روغتیا | High | 5:13-18 | Two convergent risks: مشران (elders) shares its everyday sense with tribal/village jirga elders and must be distinguished from that adjudicative authority; anointing with oil (5:14) must be distinguished from folk-Islamic amulet (taweez) and ruqya exorcism practice so the act is not read as magical/protective ritual rather than faith-expressing pastoral care. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Patience and the Lord’s Return | صبر او د خداوند راتلل | Critical | 5:1-6; 5:7-11 | Islamic eschatology shares an expectation of Isa’s return but subordinates it to the Mahdi and recasts its purpose (affirming Islam, defeating the Dajjal), unlike the NT’s sovereign, self-returning divine Judge and Bridegroom. This shared-vocabulary-different-content collision parallels the baseline’s Critical messiah/resurrection_of_christ entries and must be actively corrected at every occurrence of “the coming of the Lord” (5:7-8) and the imminent-Judge imagery (5:9). | Human theologian |
| 9 | Confession and Restoration | اقرار او بیارغونه | Critical | 5:16; 5:19-20 | Safety-critical: “confess your sins to one another” (5:16) must never carry اقرار’s formal, judicial-admission connotation under Islamic jurisprudential categories, given the real, sometimes life-threatening danger converts face if private matters — including the practice of the Christian faith itself — become known. “Cover a multitude of sins” (5:20) risks misreading through the honor-shame “cover-up-to-preserve-honor” script rather than gracious forgiveness through genuine repentance. | Human theologian |

- Coverage status: Reviewed — final chapter, all four sub-sections separately load-bearing; none silently omitted.
3. Doctrines With No Chapter Silently Omitted — Confirmation Table
| Chapter | Doctrines Touched | New-Term Contribution? | Explicit Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Trials/Testing; Wisdom; Worldliness (religion root); Faith and Works (seed) | Yes — heavy | Fully reviewed above; foundational chapter, no omission |
| 2 | Favoritism/Poor; Faith and Works (core passage) | Yes — heaviest in book | Fully reviewed above; anchor chapter, no omission |
| 3 | Taming the Tongue; Wisdom (contrast) | Yes | Fully reviewed above; no omission |
| 4 | Worldliness/Friendship with God | Yes | Fully reviewed above; no omission |
| 5 | Favoritism (echo); Patience/Lord’s Return; Taming the Tongue (echo); Prayer/Healing; Confession/Restoration | Yes — heavy, multi-doctrine | Fully reviewed above; final chapter, no omission |
No chapter of James contributes zero new theological content; every chapter is explicitly accounted for per the PRD full-book-coverage mandate. This matches the glossary’s own finding in 08_core_glossary.md that “all five chapters of James contribute load-bearing new theological vocabulary.”

5. Relationship to the Baseline Romans Language Package
None of the doctrines or risk tiers above override, soften, or contradict any baseline Romans entry. Where James doctrines reuse baseline Critical/High terms (faith, righteousness, justification, salvation, law, lord, god, father, sin, called, kingdom_of_god, fellowship, church), the baseline’s established Pashto rendering is retained without modification; James’s contribution is exclusively the addition of context-specific explanatory notes (e.g., the Faith-and-Works harmonizing footnote) required because James applies these terms in argumentative contexts distinct from Romans.
This document is the required input to Phase 1 Step 5 (Cultural/Religious Collision Notes expansion) and downstream Phase 2 review routing. It must be read alongside 08_core_glossary.md and assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json; no risk tier here may be changed without a corresponding version increment to the registry.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Faith and Works
Pashto name: ایمان او کارونه
Key terms: works, faith, dead_faith, justification, friend_of_god, word_of_truth, law_of_liberty_royal_law
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: James 2:24’s ‘a person is justified by works and not by faith alone’ uses the identical δικαιόω verb and even quotes the identical Genesis 15:6 clause behind the baseline’s Critical imputed_righteousness entry, yet argues in an evidentiary/vindication sense rather than Paul’s forensic-declaration sense. Left unharmonized, this collides directly with, and risks confirming, the Islamic mizan (deeds-weighing) soteriology the baseline was built to correct. Requires a standing harmonizing footnote at every occurrence distinguishing James’s sense from Paul’s, and requires ‘works’ rendered natively (کارونه) rather than with the loaded اعمال.
Patience and the Lord’s Return
Pashto name: صبر او د خداوند راتلل
Key terms: patience_in_waiting, coming_of_the_lord, judge_at_the_door, jobs_endurance, lord_of_hosts
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Islamic eschatology shares an expectation of Isa’s (Jesus’s) return but subordinates it to the Mahdi and recasts its purpose (affirming Islam, defeating the Dajjal) rather than the NT’s sovereign, self-returning divine Judge and Bridegroom; this shared-vocabulary-different-content collision (parallel to the baseline’s Critical messiah and resurrection_of_christ entries) must be actively corrected at every occurrence of ‘the coming of the Lord’ (5:7-8) and the imminent-Judge imagery (5:9).
Confession and Restoration
Pashto name: اقرار او بیارغونه
Key terms: confess_sins_to_one_another, cover_multitude_of_sins, turn_back_a_sinner, forgiven
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, safety-critical: ‘confess your sins to one another’ (5:16) must never be taught with the connotations of اقرار’s formal, judicial-admission sense under Islamic jurisprudential categories, given the real, sometimes life-threatening danger converts face if private matters (including the practice of the Christian faith itself) become known; and ‘cover a multitude of sins’ (5:20) risks misreading through the honor-shame ‘cover-up-to-preserve-honor’ cultural script rather than as gracious forgiveness through genuine repentance.
High Risk Doctrines
Trials and the Testing of Faith
Pashto name: ازموینې او د ایمان ازمویل
Key terms: trial, temptation, testing_genuineness, steadfastness_endurance, perfect_mature, doubting
Review routing: Human theologian
James uses one Greek word-family (πειρασμός) for both faith-refining external hardship and internal enticement to sin, explicitly denying God is the source of the latter (1:13). Pashto must use two distinct terms (ازموینه vs. وسوسه) to prevent readers from concluding God tempts people toward sin, which would also collide with the shared devil-figure tradition’s expectation that temptation is purely external/satanic (echoing waswas).
Favoritism and the Poor
Pashto name: جانبداري او غریبان
Key terms: favoritism, poor, rich, assembly_synagogue, called
Review routing: Human theologian
Directly opposes Pashtunwali’s own honor-status etiquette, in which deferential treatment of a wealthy or honorable guest (melmastia) is customary and expected; James 2:5’s choosing of the poor as heirs of the kingdom, and 2:1’s naming favoritism a sin against ‘the Lord of glory,’ require deliberate teaching against a deeply held cultural default rather than assuming it self-evident.
Taming the Tongue
Pashto name: د ژبې نری ساتل
Key terms: tongue, gehenna, likeness_of_god, do_not_swear
Review routing: Human theologian
In a culture where speech — insult, gossip, public accusation — can trigger honor-based retaliation and escalate into blood feud (badal), James’s warning that the tongue ‘sets the whole course of life on fire’ (3:6) carries acute, real-world social and physical danger, not merely rhetorical force; teaching must engage this concrete stakes-raising context, not treat the warning as generic etiquette advice.
Worldliness versus Friendship with God
Pashto name: د نړۍ مینه او د خدای سره ملګرتیا
Key terms: desires_passions, spiritual_adultery, friendship_with_the_world, submit_to_god, draw_near_to_god, religion, lawgiver_and_judge
Review routing: Human theologian
Contains a Critical-severity pressure point within this High-risk doctrine: James 4:4’s metaphorical ‘adulteresses’ (μοιχαλίδες) uses OT covenant-unfaithfulness imagery that, if decontextualized, risks being heard as a literal accusation of زنا with severe, potentially lethal honor-code consequences in Pashtun society; and 4:7’s ‘submit to God’ collides with Islam’s own root meaning of submission and with Pashtunwali’s competing loyalty codes (nang, tribal-elder authority). Both require mandatory explanatory framing at every occurrence.
Prayer and Healing
Pashto name: دعا او روغتیا
Key terms: prayer_of_faith, anoint_with_oil, elders, forgiven, salvation
Review routing: Human theologian
Two collision risks converge here: مشران (elders) shares its everyday meaning with tribal/village jirga elders and must be distinguished from that customary adjudicative authority; and anointing with oil (5:14) must be clearly distinguished from folk-Islamic amulet (taweez) and ruqya exorcism practices common in regional folk religion, so the simple, faith-expressing act of pastoral care is not read as a magical or protective ritual.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Wisdom from Above
Pashto name: له پاسه حکمت
Key terms: wisdom, wisdom_from_above, earthly_wisdom, double_minded
Review routing: Native speaker review
حکمت carries strong positive resonance with the Islamic hikmah wisdom tradition, a genuine cultural asset, but risks remaining generalized/philosophical unless anchored to the specific fruit James names in 3:17 (pure, peaceable, gentle, full of mercy) and to its divine source (asking God in undivided faith, 1:5-8), not human attainment.
