Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — Philippians (Pashto Language Package)
Methodology Note
This analysis extends the baseline Romans Language Package for Pashto. Every term already recorded in translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json (e.g. گناه, ایمان, فضل, صداقت, نجات, خداوند, خدای, عیسی, مسیح, انجیل, روح القدس, پلار, مقدسان, ملګرتیا, سوله, شکر, بلنه, ناموس, جلال, بیا راژوندي کیدل) is reused exactly with no change to translation, transliteration, or risk tier, per hard rule. New terms introduced by Philippians receive full field treatment (original, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, destination-language rendering risk) and are proposed for addition to translation memory at the end of this document’s companion glossary (08).
Risk tiers (Critical/High/Medium/Low) and review routing follow the baseline’s doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions exactly.
PART 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse Analysis: Philippians 2:1-11
This is the Christ Hymn (Carmen Christi), the theological anchor of the curriculum, treating the Incarnation, self-emptying (kenosis), humility, and exaltation of Christ. Every load-bearing term is treated below.
Philippians 2:1
“So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy…”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| encouragement | παράκλησις | paraklēsis | a calling-alongside; comfort/exhortation | comfort, appeal, encouragement, consolation | ”encouragement,” “comfort,” “consolation” | The mutual strengthening believers have because they are “in Christ” — grounds Paul’s appeal for unity. | Medium. Render هڅونه (hakol root already in TM for “exhort”) or تسلي (tasalli, comfort). Must not read as mere pep-talk; source is union with Christ. |
| in Christ | ἐν Χριστῷ | en Christō | in Christ (locative/incorporative) | union, sphere of belonging, instrumental | ”in Christ,” “united to Christ” | Paul’s signature identity-formula; the ground of every appeal that follows. Ties directly to baseline doctrine “Christian Identity in Christ” (Romans 6, 8, 12). | High. Must render consistently as په مسیح کې (pa Masih ke) throughout Philippians, matching Romans usage. Identity in Christ, not tribal/qawm identity — see baseline note under christian_identity_in_christ. |
| participation/fellowship | κοινωνία πνεύματος | koinōnia pneumatos | shared participation of/in the Spirit | joint-participation, partnership, sharing | ”fellowship of the Spirit,” “participation in the Spirit,” “sharing in the Spirit” | Believers’ common, Spirit-given bond, not mere social camaraderie. | Medium. Reuse baseline ملګرتیا (fellowship) + روح القدس (Holy Spirit): د روح القدس ملګرتیا. Must retain the personal, divine referent (Spirit), not read as a generic “team spirit.” |
| affection and sympathy | σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί | splanchna kai oiktirmoi | bowels/inward parts and compassions (Hebraic idiom for deep emotion) | tenderness, compassion, deep affection, mercy | ”affection and sympathy,” “tenderness and compassion,” “bowels of mercy” (KJV) | Deep, gut-level compassion, the emotional register underlying unity. | Low-Medium. Do not translate literally as “intestines”; use مینه او زړه سوی (love and heart-compassion) or similar natural Pashto idiom. Idiom-handling rule applies. |
Philippians 2:2
“complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| joy | χαρά | chara | joy, gladness | joy, delight, gladness, rejoicing | ”joy,” “gladness” | The dominant emotional-theological key of the whole letter (used ~16x); here Paul’s joy is completed by the church’s unity. Anchors curriculum doctrine “Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment.” | High. New baseline term required: خوشحالي (khushhali). Must be distinguished from mere circumstantial happiness and from Islamic ṣabr (patient endurance) — Pauline chara is an active, Spirit-given gladness that coexists with suffering, not stoic resignation to it. See glossary entry. |
| same mind / mind-set | τὸ αὐτὸ φρονῆτε | to auto phronēte | to think the same thing | to have the same disposition, attitude, opinion, purpose | ”be of the same mind,” “think the same way,” “have the same attitude” | Not merely intellectual agreement but shared disposition and purpose — the verb φρονέω (phroneō) recurs as a structural keyword across Philippians (1:7; 2:2, 5; 3:15, 19; 4:2, 10) and anchors doctrine “Unity and Humility in the Church.” | High. Render همفکري لرل (hamfikri larel, “having same-mindedness”) or يو فکر کول. Pashtun jirga (tribal council) culture values achieving group consensus, a possible positive bridge — but the unity in view here is spiritual unity grounded in Christ’s own humility (v.5), not tribal/political consensus for social ends; this distinction must be taught explicitly. |
| one mind / one accord | σύμψυχοι, τὸ ἓν φρονοῦντες | sympsychoi, to hen phronountes | joined in soul; thinking the one thing | unity of soul, singleness of purpose | ”united in spirit,” “of one mind,” “one accord” | Reinforces the same-mindedness with emotional/volitional depth (soul-union). | Medium. Render یو روح (yaw rooh, “one soul/spirit”) or یو موخه لرل (having one goal); avoid confusion with the Holy Spirit’s fellowship above — this is inter-believer unity, not divine indwelling per se. |
Philippians 2:3
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| selfish ambition | ἐριθεία | eritheia | rivalry, factional self-seeking | strife, selfish ambition, party-spirit | ”selfish ambition,” “rivalry,” “strife” | Ambition that fractures community, the opposite of the unity Paul commands. | Medium. Render شخړه-ايستونکې خود غرضي (khud-gharzi, self-interest/selfishness) or ځان غوښتنه. |
| conceit / vain glory | κενοδοξία | kenodoxia | empty glory | vanity, conceit, empty pride | ”conceit,” “vainglory,” “empty pride” | Note the κενο- (empty) root, the same root as v.7’s ἐκένωσεν (“emptied himself”) — Paul sets up a deliberate wordplay: believers must empty themselves of empty pride, following the pattern of Christ who emptied himself of his rightful glory. This wordplay is a load-bearing literary and theological link the translation should preserve if at all possible, or at minimum flag in a translator’s note. | High. Render خالي جلال-غوښتنه (khali jalal-ghushtana, “empty glory-seeking”) or simply جلال-غوښتنه (vainglory) with a footnote connecting to v.7’s خالي کول. Given honor-shame Pashtunwali culture, seeking glory/honor (nang) is the social default; Paul’s command against it is sharply countercultural and should be flagged as High risk for pastoral explanation. |
| humility | ταπεινοφροσύνη | tapeinophrosynē | lowliness of mind | humility, lowliness, modesty | ”humility,” “lowliness of mind” | The positive virtue commanded, exemplified supremely by Christ in v.8 (ἐταπείνωσεν, same root). Core term for doctrine “Unity and Humility in the Church.” | High. Render تواضع (tawaze’, a Persian/Arabic-origin term already positively valued in regional Sufi ethical vocabulary) or native ټیټ فکري (teet fikri, “low/humble mindedness”). Genuine cultural tension: Pashtunwali’s honor code (nang) treats self-lowering, especially by someone of standing, as shameful and dishonorable — voluntary humility inverts the entire tribal honor economy. This must be taught explicitly as Christ’s own pattern (v.6-8), not weakness. |
| count others more significant | ὑπερέχοντας ἑαυτῶν ἡγούμενοι | hyperechontas heautōn hēgoumenoi | considering [others] surpassing themselves | esteeming, regarding as superior | ”count others more significant than yourselves,” “esteem others better than yourselves” | The concrete outworking of humility: honor deliberately redirected toward others. | High. Render نور له ځان څخه غوره ګڼل (nor la zaan tsakha ghwara ganel, “consider others better than self”). Directly inverts Pashtunwali’s honor-accumulation default (nang, badal-linked status competition); must be taught as a deliberate doctrinal reversal, not a vague nicety. |
Philippians 2:4
“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| look to / consider | σκοπέω (imperative σκοπεῖτε) | skopeite | to look at, fix attention on | consider, look out for, pay attention to | ”look to,” “have regard for,” “be concerned about” | Shares the σκοπ- root with 3:14’s “goal” (σκοπός, skopos), part of the “Pressing on toward the Goal” doctrine — attentiveness to others here, attentiveness to the prize there. | Medium. Render پام کول (paam kawul, to pay attention) or خیال ساتل. Track the root-link to 3:14 in translator notes for consistency of theological theme, though a single Pashto word need not be forced across both occurrences. |
| interests | τὰ ἑαυτῶν / τὰ ἑτέρων | ta heautōn / ta heterōn | one’s own things / the things of others | personal concerns, advantage, welfare | ”his own interests,” “the interests of others” | Concrete, everyday concerns — not abstract sentiment. | Low. Render ګټه/ اړتیاوې (benefit/needs). |
Philippians 2:5
“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,“
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| have this mind | τοῦτο φρονεῖτε | touto phroneite | think/have this disposition | same φρονέω root as v.2 | ”have this mind,” “let this mind be in you” (KJV) | The hinge verse: commands believers to adopt the very disposition displayed in the hymn that follows (vv.6-11) — Christ’s humility is the pattern for church unity, not abstract theology alone. | High. Render دا فکر/دا نظر مو په خپلو کې وساتئ. Must be translated so the connective function (this attitude = the one about to be described) is clear; do not let the hymn read as a detached doctrinal insert. |
| in Christ Jesus | ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ | en Christō Iēsou | in Christ Jesus | see v.1 | ”in Christ Jesus” | Same identity-formula as v.1, framing the hymn as the pattern of life for those in Christ. | High. Reuse رendering from v.1 for consistency: په مسیح عیسی کې. |
Philippians 2:6
“who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,“
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| form of God | μορφῇ θεοῦ | morphē theou | form, essential nature of God | outward form implying inward reality; visible manifestation of essence | ”form of God,” “nature of God,” “very nature of God” (NIV) | Asserts Christ’s pre-existent full divine nature — the foundational premise of the whole hymn and of the doctrine “Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ.” Without this premise, the “emptying” of v.7 could wrongly be read as a lesser being descending, rather than God the Son condescending. | CRITICAL. Render د خدای بڼه (da Khudai bana, “the form/nature of God”). Directly collides with tawhid: to say a man once possessed “the form of God” is, from a strict Islamic standpoint, the paradigm case of shirk. Must be paired with explicit teaching (as with baseline’s incarnation/deity_of_christ entries) that this is not a created being sharing God’s glory but God the Son himself. Human theologian review mandatory at every occurrence. |
| equality with God | τὸ εἶναι ἴσα θεῷ | to einai isa theō | to be equal to God | equal status, equal rank, sameness of nature | ”equality with God,” “to be equal with God” | Christ’s equality with God was not usurped or seized — it was already, rightfully, his own; he did not need to grasp for what was already his. | CRITICAL. Render له خدای سره برابري (la Khudai sara barabari, “equality with God”). Same collision as above; must never be softened to “closeness to God” or “a great honor from God,” which would erase the deity claim. Pair explicitly with baseline’s deity_of_christ and son_of_god entries. |
| a thing to be grasped | ἁρπαγμόν | harpagmon | a thing seized/plundered; or, a thing to be exploited/held onto | robbery, prize to be seized, or (better attested sense here) something to cling to/exploit for advantage | ”a thing to be grasped,” “something to be used to his own advantage” (NIV), “robbery” (KJV) | The key exegetical crux: Christ did not treat his equality with God as a status to cling to or exploit, in contrast to Adam’s grasping in Eden and to worldly power-seeking generally. This grounds the self-emptying that follows as voluntary, not coerced or diminishing. | High. Render نیول شوی شی (a thing to be seized/held on to) or ګټه اخیستلو ته وړ شی (a thing to exploit for gain). Must not obscure that Christ already possessed this equality; the point is voluntary relinquishment of its outward privileges, not its inward reality. |
Philippians 2:7
“but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| emptied himself | ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν | heauton ekenōsen | he emptied himself | to pour out, make void, divest oneself of status/privilege | ”emptied himself,” “made himself nothing” (NIV), “made himself of no reputation” (KJV) | The technical center of the doctrine of kenosis: Christ did not empty himself of deity (he remains “in the form of God,” v.6) but of the outward privileges, glory, and prerogatives of that status, taking on genuine human existence and servanthood. Orthodox Christology insists this is addition of humanity, not subtraction of divinity. | CRITICAL. Render خپل ځان یې خالي کړ (khpal zaan ye khali kar, “he emptied himself”). This is the newest and most theologically delicate term in the Philippians vocabulary set for Pashto, given the baseline’s own note that Pashto’s Christian tradition is the youngest and thinnest in this translation pipeline with no settled local precedent. Must be taught carefully alongside تجسد (incarnation, already in baseline) so readers do not conclude Christ ceased being divine (a kenotic heresy) rather than that he veiled his glory and added a human nature. Human theologian review mandatory at every occurrence. |
| form of a servant | μορφὴν δούλου | morphēn doulou | the form/nature of a slave | genuine servant/slave nature, not costume or role-play | ”form of a servant,” “form of a slave,” “very nature of a servant” (NIV) | Deliberately mirrors “form of God” (v.6, same μορφή word) — the same Christ who genuinely possessed divine nature now genuinely possesses servant nature. Total, not partial, condescension. | High. Render د غلام بڼه (da ghulam bana, “the form of a slave/servant”). غلام (ghulam, slave/servant) carries strong social-status connotations in a culture still shaped by lingering honor/patron-client and historical slavery memory; the term’s shock value (the God-man taking literal slave status, the lowest social rank) should be preserved, not softened to a generic “helper.” |
| likeness of men | ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων | homoiōmati anthrōpōn | in the likeness of humans | resemblance, corresponding form; can denote either genuine identity or mere outward similarity depending on context | ”likeness of men,” “human likeness,” “in human form” | Affirms genuine, full humanity (not illusion or mere appearance) — the doctrine “Humanity of Christ” already flagged as High risk in the baseline Romans registry applies with equal force here. | High. Render د انسانانو په شان (da insananو pa shan, “in the likeness/manner of humans”) or, more strongly, رښتیني انسان شو (he truly became a human) to avoid any docetic (“only appeared human”) misreading. This shares the same root risk as the Quran’s crucifixion-denial “shubbiha lahum” (it was made to appear so) already flagged for resurrection in the baseline — translators must actively avoid vocabulary that could be heard as “seemed human” rather than “became human.” |
Philippians 2:8
“And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| found in human form | σχήματι εὑρεθεὶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος | schēmati heuretheis hōs anthrōpos | found in outward fashion/appearance as a man | outward form/pattern as observed by others | ”found in human form,” “found in appearance as a man” | Reinforces v.7’s genuine humanity from the standpoint of outward observation — what onlookers actually saw. | Medium. Render لکه انسان وموندل شو (he was found/seen as a human). Same docetism caution as v.7 applies; په بڼه (in form/appearance) must not be read as “merely seemed.” |
| humbled himself | ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν | etapeinōsen heauton | he humbled himself | self-lowering, voluntary descent in status | ”humbled himself,” “he lowered himself” | The verb form of v.3’s ταπεινοφροσύνη (humility) — Christ is the concrete pattern believers are commanded to imitate. The self-humbling is voluntary and active, from a position of supreme dignity, all the way to death. | High. Render خپل ځان یې ټیټ کړ (khpal zaan ye teet kar, “he lowered/humbled himself”). Same Pashtunwali honor-code tension as v.3: for a person of the highest possible standing (God the Son) to voluntarily lower himself to death is maximally countercultural in an honor-shame society and should be taught as the theological center of the whole hymn, not softened into mere meekness. |
| obedient | ὑπήκοος | hypēkoos | obedient, submissive to another’s voice | compliance, submission, obedience | ”obedient,” “he became obedient” | Christ’s obedience to the Father, unto death — distinct from, yet consonant with, the baseline’s “obedience of faith” doctrine (Romans 1:5), though here it is Christ’s own perfect obedience rather than the believer’s faith-response. | High. Render اطاعت مند شو (ita’at-mand sho, “became obedient”), reusing the اطاعت root already established in baseline’s د ایمان اطاعت (obedience of faith). Distinguish clearly: this is Christ’s unique redemptive obedience, the ground of salvation, not merely an ethical example of submission to religious or tribal authority. |
| death on a cross | θανάτου σταυροῦ | thanatou staurou | death of a cross | crucifixion, the specific Roman method of execution reserved for slaves and rebels — the most shameful conceivable death in the ancient Mediterranean honor system | ”death on a cross,” “even death on a cross,” “death by crucifixion” | The nadir of the hymn’s descent: not just death, but the most humiliating death reserved for the lowest social class — matching the “form of a servant” of v.7. The paradox at the heart of the gospel: ultimate shame becomes the means of ultimate glory (v.9-11). | CRITICAL. Render د صلیب مرګ (da saleeb marg). صلیب (saleeb, cross) is the established Pashto Christian loanword and must be retained, never softened to a generic “execution” or “hardship.” Shares the Quran’s crucifixion-denial (Surah 4:157) risk flagged for “resurrection” in the baseline — every occurrence requires explicit historical-apologetic affirmation that Christ was truly crucified. Additionally, in an honor-shame culture, crucifixion’s social meaning (a slave’s/criminal’s death, maximal public shame) must be explained so the paradox of v.9-11 (shame reversed into supreme glory) lands with its full rhetorical force. Human theologian review mandatory. |
Philippians 2:9
“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,“
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| highly exalted | ὑπερύψωσεν | hyperypsōsen | super-exalted, exalted to the highest degree | the ὑπερ- (hyper-) prefix intensifies “exalted,” signaling an exaltation beyond ordinary honor — to the highest possible position | ”highly exalted,” “super-exalted,” “exalted to the highest place” (NIV) | The direct reversal of and reward for the self-emptying/humbling of vv.7-8 — the honor-shame logic of the whole hymn: maximal self-lowering results in maximal exaltation by God himself. Structurally central to the “Incarnation and Self-Emptying” doctrine. | High. Render خدای هغه ډېر اوچت کړ (Khudai hagha der ochat kar, “God raised/exalted him very high”) or خدای هغه له ټولو نه لوړ مقام ته پورته کړ (God raised him to a rank above all). Must convey exaltation to the highest supreme rank, not mere praise or honor among others — this is the immediate ground for the universal worship of vv.10-11. |
| bestowed / graciously gave | ἐχαρίσατο | echarisato | he graciously gave, bestowed as a gift | freely gave, granted as a favor — from the same χαρ- root as χάρις (charis, “grace”) | “bestowed on him,” “graciously gave him,” “freely gave” | The Father’s exaltation of the Son is itself an act of grace-language (same root as فضل, “grace,” in the baseline), reinforcing that even Christ’s exaltation flows from the Father’s favor, not mere transaction. | Medium. Render ورکړ / وبښه (gave/granted). Note for translators: shares root with باسلاین’s فضل (grace) — a subtle intertextual echo worth flagging but not requiring the identical Pashto word, since the referent here (a title/name) differs from soteriological grace. |
| name above every name | ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα | onoma to hyper pan onoma | the name [that is] above every name | supreme rank/authority (in Hebraic thought, “name” signifies identity, authority, and reputation, not merely a label) | “the name that is above every name,” “a name above all names” | Almost certainly refers to the title “Lord” (κύριος, kyrios) conferred in v.11 — echoing the divine name YHWH of the Greek Old Testament (LXX uses kyrios for YHWH). This is a direct assertion of Christ’s deity and supreme Lordship, connecting to the baseline’s Critical-risk lordship_of_christ doctrine. | CRITICAL. Render له هر نوم نه اوچت نوم (le har num na ochat num, “a name higher than every name”). Must be taught explicitly alongside v.11’s “Lord” confession as the same divine-name claim already flagged Critical in the baseline (Romans 10:9’s “Jesus is Lord” = عیسی خداوند دی). Human theologian review mandatory. |
Philippians 2:10
“so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,“
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| every knee should bow | πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ | pan gony kampsē | every knee should bend | posture of worship, submission, homage | ”every knee should bow,” “every knee will bow” | Universal, cosmic worship owed to Christ specifically because of his exaltation (v.9) — total submission of all creation, willing or unwilling, to his Lordship. | High. Render هر زنګون به وچوکي (har zangoon ba wa-chuki, “every knee will bend”). CAUTION: do not render as سجده کول (sajda kawul), the specific term for the Islamic prostration posture of formal salat prayer — using سجده here risks either (a) implying Christ-worship is merely another performance of Islamic ritual prayer, collapsing the unique Christian confession into existing Islamic praxis, or (b) provoking severe offense/danger by appearing to claim Christ as an object of salat. زنګون کیول (“bending the knee”) is the safer literal rendering; the worship content should be made explicit in surrounding teaching rather than carried by the verb itself. |
| heaven, earth, under the earth | ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων | epouraniōn kai epigeiōn kai katachthoniōn | heavenly, earthly, and under-earthly [beings] | the entire cosmic order — angelic/heavenly beings, living humans, and the dead/underworld | ”in heaven and on earth and under the earth” | Total, three-tiered cosmic scope: no being anywhere is exempt from owing homage to the exalted Christ. | Medium. Render آسمان کې، ځمکه کې، او د ځمکې لاندې (in heaven, on earth, and under the earth). Straightforward merism; low ambiguity beyond faithful completeness of the three-part list. |
Philippians 2:11
“and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| every tongue confess | πᾶσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται | pasa glōssa exomologēsētai | every tongue should openly acknowledge/confess | public, verbal, formal acknowledgment/declaration | ”every tongue confess,” “every tongue acknowledge,” “every tongue will confess” | Parallels “every knee bow” — total, universal, verbal acknowledgment of Christ’s Lordship, matching the confession-and-salvation pattern of Romans 10:9-10 already established in the baseline. | High. Render هره ژبه به اقرار وکړي (har zhaba ba iqrar wa-kri, “every tongue will confess/acknowledge”). اقرار (iqrar, confession/acknowledgment) intentionally echoes the confessional structure of the Islamic shahada (“I bear witness that…”) — a real and useful rhetorical bridge (confession-as-decisive-act is already a familiar category), but the content confessed here (Jesus Christ is Lord) directly displaces, rather than parallels, the shahada’s content. This must be taught explicitly, not left as an implicit parallel. |
| Jesus Christ is Lord | Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς Κύριος | Iēsous Christos Kyrios | Jesus Christ [is] Lord | the church’s earliest and most basic confessional formula | ”Jesus Christ is Lord,” “Jesus Christ, Lord” | The same confession mandated as the salvation-confession in Romans 10:9 in the baseline Language Package, here in its fuller triple-name form (name + messianic title + lordship title) as the goal and content of universal worship. | CRITICAL. Render عیسی مسیح خداوند دی (Isa Masih Khudawand day), building on the baseline’s mandated Romans 10:9 rendering عیسی خداوند دی by adding مسیح (Masih) per this verse’s fuller formula. Per the baseline’s Theological Consistency Rules, the core “Jesus is Lord” clause must remain recognizably identical to the Romans 10:9 rendering in root wording (عیسی … خداوند دی) even when Philippians’ fuller form adds مسیح. Never soften خداوند to a respectful title; this is the full deity/Lordship claim. Human theologian review mandatory at every occurrence. |
| to the glory of God the Father | εἰς δόξαν θεοῦ πατρός | eis doxan theou patros | unto the glory of God [the] Father | purpose/result clause — the ultimate aim of Christ’s exaltation and universal confession | ”to the glory of God the Father,” “for the glory of God the Father” | Christ’s exaltation and universal worship do not compete with, but rather fulfill, the Father’s own glory — Trinitarian harmony, not rivalry. | Medium. Reuse baseline جلال (glory) and پلار (Father): د پلار خدای جلال ته. Note: پلار carries the same tawhid-anthropomorphism and Pashtun patriarchal-authority risk flagged in the baseline father entry; the warmth/intimacy counterbalance recommended there (Abba/ابا, Romans 8) applies equally to this occurrence. |
PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Analysis of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 (Philippians 1:1-30)
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| servants (of Christ Jesus) | δοῦλοι | douloi | slaves | slaves, bondservants | ”servants,” “bondservants,” “slaves” | Paul and Timothy’s self-designation (1:1) — voluntary, total ownership by Christ, the same status-word Christ himself takes on in 2:7. | High. Render غلامان (ghulaman, slaves/servants) to preserve the deliberate link with 2:7’s “form of a servant” (same root word), reinforcing that apostolic ministry mirrors Christ’s own self-lowering pattern. |
| overseers (bishops) | ἐπίσκοποι | episkopoi | overseers, supervisors | congregational leaders responsible for oversight/care | ”overseers,” “bishops,” “elders” (functionally overlapping in the NT) | Local church leadership structure (1:1), addressed alongside “saints” and “deacons.” | Medium. Render ناظر / ناظرین (nazer/nazerin, overseer). Given that much of the Pashto-speaking house-church is small, dispersed, and often meets secretly (per baseline’s church_as_gods_people entry), this term should be taught as a functional description of spiritual oversight and care, not an institutional hierarchical office bearing outward, public authority — a title like this could itself be a security risk if used publicly to identify leaders. |
| deacons | διάκονοι | diakonoi | servants, ministers | those who serve/minister in practical church ministry | ”deacons,” “ministers,” “servants” | Named alongside overseers as a recognized ministry role (1:1). | Medium. Render خادمان (khademan, servants/ministers). Same security-context caution as “overseers” above regarding public office-titles in restricted contexts. |
| saints | ἅγιοι | hagioi | holy ones | all believers, corporate | ”saints,” “holy ones” | Baseline term, reused exactly. | Reuse مقدسان exactly per baseline (Medium risk, corporate sense for all believers, not an ascetic elite). |
| grace and peace | χάρις καὶ εἰρήνη | charis kai eirēnē | grace and peace | the standard Pauline greeting-pair | ”grace and peace” | Standard salutation formula, identical in force to Romans 1:7. | Reuse فضل (grace) and سوله (peace) exactly per baseline; High and Medium risk respectively as already documented. |
| thanksgiving | εὐχαριστία / εὐχαριστῶ | eucharistia / eucharistō | thanksgiving / I give thanks | gratitude to God | ”thanksgiving,” “I thank” | Paul’s thanksgiving for the Philippians’ partnership (1:3-5). | Reuse شکر exactly per baseline (Low risk). |
| partnership/fellowship in the gospel | κοινωνία εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον | koinōnia eis to euangelion | fellowship/partnership unto the gospel | joint participation, shared investment (the term can carry a commercial/financial partnership sense) | “partnership in the gospel,” “fellowship in the gospel,” “your partnership in furtherance of the gospel” (KJV) | The Philippians’ active, material and spiritual co-laboring with Paul in gospel ministry — anchors curriculum doctrine “Partnership in the Gospel.” Distinct from mere social fellowship; implies shared risk, shared resources, shared mission. | High. Reuse baseline ملګرتیا (fellowship, Low risk generally) but flag this specific collocation with انجیل as High risk in this persecution context: shared “partnership in the gospel” (financial support, prayer, personal risk-sharing with an imprisoned apostle) could itself constitute evidence of illegal religious activity in restrictive jurisdictions. Treat with the same security sensitivity as the baseline’s mission and evangelism entries. |
| gospel | εὐαγγέλιον | euangelion | good news | proclamation of Christ’s saving work | ”gospel,” “good news” | Recurs throughout ch.1 (defense/confirmation of the gospel, advance of the gospel, etc.) | Reuse انجیل exactly per baseline (High risk, tahrif-assumption caution). |
| bonds / imprisonment | δεσμοί | desmoi | bonds, chains, imprisonment | literal imprisonment; by extension, “chains” for the gospel’s sake | ”my imprisonment,” “my chains,” “my bonds” | Paul’s actual Roman imprisonment, reframed as serving to advance the gospel (1:12-14) — the direct textual anchor for curriculum doctrine “Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment.” | CRITICAL. Render زندان (zindan, prison) / زنځیرونه (zanjeeruna, chains). This term carries acute real-world danger for the target readership: Muslim-background Pashto-speaking believers, especially in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, face genuine risk of imprisonment for their faith. Teaching materials referencing Paul’s imprisonment must be handled with the same security awareness mandated in the baseline for mission and evangelism — this is not a distant historical curiosity for this audience but a live possibility. Human theologian review mandatory; security review recommended alongside doctrinal review. |
| defense and confirmation of the gospel | ἀπολογία καὶ βεβαίωσις τοῦ εὐαγγελίου | apologia kai bebaiōsis tou euangeliou | defense and confirmation of the gospel | legal-forensic defense; establishing/confirming as true | ”defense and confirmation of the gospel,” “defending and confirming the gospel” | Paul’s imprisonment functions as a legal defense of the gospel’s truth before Roman authorities. | Medium. Render د انجیل دفاع او تصدیق (da Injil difa’a aw tasdiq, “defense and confirmation of the gospel”). |
| to live is Christ, to die is gain | τὸ ζῆν Χριστός, τὸ ἀποθανεῖν κέρδος | to zēn Christos, to apothanein kerdos | to live [is] Christ, to die [is] gain | Paul’s personal existential summary — life finds its entire meaning in Christ, and death is not loss but greater gain (union with Christ). | ”For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” | A pinnacle statement of contentment-in-suffering doctrine: death itself is reframed not as tragedy or defeat but as gain, directly relevant to a persecuted readership who may face martyrdom. | High. Render ژوند مې مسیح دی، مرګ مې ګټه ده (zhwand me Masih day, marg me gata da). Must be taught pastorally, not fatalistically — this is confident hope in the resurrection and eternal union with Christ (see baseline resurrection and salvation entries), not stoic indifference to death or a suicidal disregard for life; care is needed given the acute persecution context of the intended readership. |
| striving together | συναθλέω | synathleō | to contend/struggle together (athletic-combat metaphor) | joint struggle, contending together as in athletic competition | ”striving together,” “contending together,” “laboring side by side” | Describes united effort “for the faith of the gospel” amid opposition (1:27-30). | High. Render يوځای مبارزه کول (yaw-zaay mubaraza kawul, “to struggle/strive together”). EXPLICITLY AVOID جهاد (jihad) as a rendering, despite its surface semantic fit for “struggle” — جهاد carries loaded connotations of religious armed struggle in the surrounding Islamic culture and would badly misrepresent Paul’s meaning (nonviolent, communal perseverance in gospel witness amid suffering) as a call to militant struggle. This is a critical forbidden-substitution-style caution parallel to the baseline’s شریعت/امت prohibitions. |
| fruit of righteousness | καρπὸς δικαιοσύνης | karpos dikaiosynēs | fruit of righteousness | the visible, good outcomes flowing from a righteous standing/life | ”fruit of righteousness,” “harvest of righteousness” | The practical outworking, in Paul’s life and the Philippians’ lives, of the righteousness already secured by faith (a theme fully developed in ch.3). | Medium. Reuse baseline صداقت (righteousness): د صداقت میوه. Must be read as fruit that flows from righteousness already given, not righteousness earned by producing good fruit — same grace/works distinction flagged Critical throughout the baseline. |
| joy / rejoice | χαρά / χαίρω | chara / chairō | joy / to rejoice | recurring keyword throughout the letter (1:4, 18, 25; 2:2, 17-18, 28-29; 3:1; 4:1, 4, 10) | “joy,” “rejoice,” “I rejoice” | Introduced already in ch.1 (1:4, 18, 25) as the letter’s dominant emotional-theological register, sustained even from prison. | High — see full treatment under core-passage v.2 above and glossary entry. Consistent rendering required across every occurrence: خوشحالي / خوشحالېدل. |
Chapter 2 (Philippians 2:12-30) — remainder, after the core passage (2:1-11 treated in Part 1 above)
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| work out your own salvation | κατεργάζεσθε τὴν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν | katergazesthe tēn heautōn sōtērian | work out/produce your own salvation | to bring to completion, carry out to full effect (not “earn” or “produce from nothing”) | “work out your own salvation,” “continue to work out your salvation” | Immediately follows the Christ-hymn: because God has acted decisively in Christ (2:6-11) and works within believers (2:13), they are to actively live out (not earn) the salvation already given. | CRITICAL. Render خپل نجات په ویره او لړزون سره بشپړ/پوره کړئ (khpal nejat pa wera aw larzun sara bashpar/pura krai — “work out/complete your salvation with fear and trembling”), reusing baseline نجات (salvation, Critical risk) exactly. Grave risk of misreading as works-based salvation, directly contradicting فضل (grace) and reinforcing the Islamic deeds-weighing framework already flagged Critical in the baseline salvation entry. Must be paired with explicit teaching (drawing on 2:13, “God who works in you”) that this is the outworking of a salvation already secured by grace through faith, not its earning. Human theologian review mandatory. |
| grumbling and disputing | γογγυσμοί καὶ διαλογισμοί | gongysmoi kai dialogismoi | murmurings and disputings | complaint, dissension, quarreling | ”grumbling and disputing,” “complaining and arguing” | The behaviors incompatible with the unity/humility commanded in 2:1-4. | Low. Render شکایتونه او شخړې (shikayatuna aw shakhre). |
| blameless and innocent, children of God | ἄμεμπτοι καὶ ἀκέραιοι, τέκνα θεοῦ | amemptoi kai akeraioi, tekna theou | blameless and pure, children of God | moral integrity; the identity-title “children of God" | "blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish” | Connects to the baseline’s adoption doctrine (children/sons of God, full family status) — see baseline adoption/زوی نیول entry. | Medium-High. Reuse conceptual link to baseline زوی نیول (adoption) framework; render د خدای ماشومان/زامن without blemish as بې عیبه. |
| shine as lights | φαίνεσθε ὡς φωστῆρες | phainesthe hōs phōstēres | you shine/appear as luminaries | stars/heavenly lights, a positive public-witness image | ”shine as lights,” “shine like stars” | Positive image of visible, contrasting witness “in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation” (2:15). | Low-Medium. Render لکه ستوري روښانه کیدل (like stars, shining). Note: in a persecution context, “visible shining” must be taught as moral/character witness, not necessarily public identification that endangers safety — nuance worth flagging alongside baseline’s mission/evangelism security notes. |
| word of life | λόγος ζωῆς | logos zōēs | word of life | the gospel message, source of (eternal) life | ”word of life,” “the message of life” | The content Philippian believers “hold fast” as lights in the world. | Medium. Render د ژوند کلام (da zhwand kalam). |
| poured out as a drink offering | σπένδομαι | spendomai | I am being poured out [as a libation] | Old Testament sacrificial imagery — a drink offering poured out beside/upon another sacrifice | ”poured out as a drink offering,” “being poured out like a libation” | Paul frames his possible martyrdom as a sacrificial offering poured out upon the Philippians’ own sacrificial faith — reinforcing “Joy in Suffering” (2:17-18, “I am glad and rejoice with you all”). | High. Render لکه صدقه/قربانۍ توی کیدل (like an offering being poured out). Requires explanation of unfamiliar OT drink-offering imagery; also carries acute real-world resonance (potential martyrdom) for the persecuted target readership — must be handled with the same pastoral and security sensitivity as the “to die is gain” entry above. |
| minister/servant (of Epaphroditus, Timothy) | λειτουργός / διάκονος (sense) | leitourgos | one who renders public service/ministry | service, ministry, official service | ”minister,” “servant,” “messenger” | Describes Epaphroditus and Timothy’s practical gospel service. | Low. Render خدمتګار (khedmatgar, servant/minister). |
Chapter 3 (Philippians 3:1-21)
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| rejoice | χαίρετε | chairete | rejoice! | see ch.1/2 joy entries | ”rejoice in the Lord” | Reiterates the letter’s keynote (3:1); reused rendering. | Reuse خوشحالي / خوشحالېدل exactly, High risk as established. |
| circumcision | περιτομή | peritomē | circumcision | the Jewish covenant-sign rite; by metonymy, Jewish identity/Judaizing legalists | ”circumcision,” “the circumcision” | Paul redefines true “circumcision” as worship by the Spirit, not the physical rite (3:2-3) — directly feeds doctrine “Righteousness by Faith versus the Law.” | High. Render سنت (sunnat), the existing, everyday Pashto/Islamic term for the practice (already a normal Islamic custom for Pashtun boys). RISK: unlike Paul’s original Jewish-Gentile Judaizing controversy, sunnat is a living, unremarkable Islamic and cultural practice for this readership, not a point of live religious controversy — the text’s polemic could be misheard as opposing the physical practice itself rather than its use as a false basis for righteousness before God. Must be taught with explicit historical framing (first-century Judaizer controversy) so readers don’t conclude Paul forbids the cultural practice of sunnat as such. |
| concision / mutilation (wordplay) | κατατομή | katatomē | a cutting-off, mutilation | Paul’s deliberately derogatory wordplay against περιτομή | ”the concision,” “those who mutilate the flesh” (NIV), “the mutilation” | A sharp, sarcastic dismissal of merely physical circumcision divorced from true spiritual reality. | Medium. Render يوازې د غوښې پرې کول (mere cutting of flesh) or similar periphrasis capturing the derogatory force; a Pashto pun matching the Greek wordplay is unlikely to be recoverable and need not be forced — meaning over wordplay per idiom-handling rule. |
| confidence in the flesh | πεποιθὼς ἐν σαρκί | pepoithōs en sarki | having confidence/trust in the flesh | reliance on external/physical qualifications, ethnic pedigree, law-keeping | ”confidence in the flesh,” “trust in the flesh” | Paul lists his own impeccable Jewish pedigree and law-keeping (3:4-6) only to count it all loss (3:7-8) — the core textual engine of “Righteousness by Faith versus the Law.” | High. New term flesh (σάρξ, sarx) = جسد (jasad, body/flesh) or غوښه (ghwakha, literal flesh) in this contrastive sense; render confidence as باور/تکیه: په جسد باندې تکیه. Must clarify “flesh” here means external, humanly-achieved religious/ethnic credentials, not merely the physical body, and functions as a direct parallel to reliance on shari’a-observance or tribal/lineage pedigree (qawm) for standing before God — both are here explicitly rejected as grounds of righteousness. |
| rubbish / dung | σκύβαλα | skybala | refuse, dung, excrement | garbage, waste, dung — a deliberately crude, forceful term | ”rubbish,” “dung” (KJV), “garbage,” “filth” | Paul’s shockingly strong language for everything he once counted as religious gain, now worthless compared to knowing Christ (3:8). | Medium. Render خځلات (khazalat, garbage/refuse) or a similarly forceful native term. Must retain rhetorical force (this is intentionally crude/shocking in the Greek) without crossing into a register the destination Bible-translation tradition would consider unacceptably vulgar — balance force and formal register per the Language Package’s register requirements. |
| righteousness of my own / from the law vs. righteousness from God through faith | ἐμὴν δικαιοσύνην τὴν ἐκ νόμου … τὴν ἐκ θεοῦ δικαιοσύνην ἐπὶ τῇ πίστει | emēn dikaiosynēn tēn ek nomou … tēn ek theou dikaiosynēn epi tē pistei | my own righteousness which is from law … the righteousness from God based on faith | the central antithesis of the letter’s soteriology, restating Romans’ justification doctrine in personal, autobiographical terms | ”a righteousness of my own that comes from the law… the righteousness from God that depends on faith” | The direct textual core of curriculum doctrine “Righteousness by Faith versus the Law” (3:9), restating with full force the baseline’s Critical-risk righteousness/justification doctrines. | CRITICAL. Reuse baseline صداقت (righteousness), ناموس (law), ایمان (faith) exactly, in the same honor-restoration-supplemented forensic framing already established. This verse should be flagged for identical treatment (and, where feasible, textually harmonized phrasing) with Romans 3-4’s justification-by-faith passages, per the baseline’s cross-document consistency rules. Human theologian review mandatory. |
| knowing Christ / knowledge | γνῶσις / τοῦ γνῶναι αὐτόν | gnōsis / tou gnōnai auton | knowledge / to know him | personal, relational, experiential knowing (not abstract or esoteric information) | “the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus,” “that I may know him” | Paul’s supreme, all-surpassing goal (3:8, 10) — relational, transformative knowledge of Christ himself, not rule-keeping or doctrinal information alone. | Medium-High. Render پیژندنه (pejandana, knowing/knowledge) — د مسیح پیژندل. Distinguish from Islamic ma’rifa/Sufi esoteric “knowledge of God” attained through mystical stages under a spiritual guide (pir); Paul’s “knowing Christ” is relational union secured by faith and grace, freely available, not an advanced stage reserved for spiritual elites. |
| fellowship of his sufferings | κοινωνία παθημάτων αὐτοῦ | koinōnia pathēmatōn autou | fellowship/participation of his sufferings | shared participation specifically in Christ’s own sufferings, not merely generic hardship | ”the fellowship of his sufferings,” “sharing in his sufferings” | Paul’s aim to know Christ includes participatory suffering with him — anchors curriculum doctrine “Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment” at its deepest theological level. | High. Render د هغه له کړاونو سره ملګرتیا (da hagha la krrawuno sara malgartia), reusing baseline ملګرتیا (fellowship). New companion term suffering: کړاو (krrao, hardship/suffering — a native Pashto word, deliberately preferred over the Arabic-origin مصیبت/museebat which carries strong association with impersonal, fatalistic qadar-trials in regional Islamic piety). Must be taught as participatory union with Christ’s own redemptive suffering, not generic misfortune or impersonal fate. |
| conformed to his death | συμμορφιζόμενος τῷ θανάτῳ αὐτοῦ | symmorphizomenos tō thanatō autou | being conformed/formed together with his death | shares the μορφ- (form) root with 2:6-7’s “form of God”/“form of a servant” — being shaped into the same pattern | ”becoming like him in his death,” “conformed to his death” | Deliberate lexical echo of the Christ-hymn (2:6-7): believers are progressively shaped into Christ’s own self-giving, sacrificial pattern. | High. Render د هغه له مرګ سره همشکله کیدل (da hagha la marg sara ham-shakla kedal, “being conformed to his death”). Flag the root-link to 2:6-7’s “form” vocabulary for translator awareness, even though a single identical Pashto root need not be forced. |
| attain the resurrection from the dead | ἐξανάστασις ἐκ νεκρῶν | exanastasis ek nekrōn | the out-resurrection from the dead | intensified compound of the standard resurrection term, denoting the future bodily resurrection of believers | ”attain the resurrection from the dead” | Christian hope of bodily resurrection, following Christ’s own — shares the baseline’s Critical-risk resurrection doctrine. | CRITICAL. Reuse baseline بیا راژوندي کیدل (resurrection) exactly. Same Quranic-denial risk and oral-apologetic recommendation as documented in the baseline resurrection entry apply fully here. |
| press on / pursue | διώκω | diōkō | to pursue, chase, press toward | pursuit (can also mean “persecute” in other contexts — same verb) | “press on,” “pursue,” “I press on toward the goal” | Central verb of curriculum doctrine “Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ” (3:12-14) — active, athletic, wholehearted pursuit of maturity in Christ, acknowledging one has not yet arrived. | Medium-High. Render مخکې منډه وهل (makhke manda wahal, “to run/press forward”) or تعقیبول (ta’qibawul, to pursue). Distinguish the positive sense here (pursuing Christ) from the same verb’s other biblical sense of “persecute” — no confusion risk in Pashto if rendered contextually, but flag for translator awareness. |
| perfect / mature | τέλειος | teleios | complete, mature, having reached the end/goal (τέλος) | completeness, maturity, perfection (contextually determined) | “perfect,” “mature,” “those who are mature” | Paul explicitly denies he is already “perfect” (3:12) in the sense of having fully arrived, while calling mature believers “perfect” (3:15) in a relative sense of settled maturity — the term shifts sense within six verses. | Medium. Render بشپړ (bashpar, complete) with context-sensitive care, similar to the baseline’s context-sensitive “called” entry: distinguish “not yet perfect/complete” (3:12, still pursuing) from “mature” (3:15, a settled disposition of maturity, not sinlessness). Avoid any reading suggesting attainable moral perfection/sinlessness in this life. |
| prize of the upward call | τὸ βραβεῖον τῆς ἄνω κλήσεως | to brabeion tēs anō klēseōs | the prize of the upward calling | athletic-games imagery (a race prize) combined with the noun for divine “calling” already in the baseline | ”the prize of the upward call of God,” “the goal for the prize of the upward call” | The eschatological reward toward which believers press, framed as God’s own “calling” (κλῆσις, reusing baseline بلنه) upward to himself. | Medium-High. Render د پورتنۍ بلنې انعام (da purtanai balane in’am, “the prize of the upward calling”), reusing baseline بلنه (calling) exactly. New companion term prize/انعام (in’am, reward/prize) — Low-Medium risk on its own, but must be anchored to the calling’s divine, not tribal-honor, source. |
| citizenship in heaven | πολίτευμα | politeuma | commonwealth, state, citizenship, homeland/civic community | civic/political belonging, homeland, the body of citizens of a particular state | ”citizenship is in heaven,” “our commonwealth is in heaven,” “we are citizens of heaven” (NIV) | The direct textual anchor of curriculum doctrine “Citizenship in Heaven” (3:20): believers’ ultimate civic/political identity and allegiance belongs to heaven, not to any earthly state. | CRITICAL. Render زموږ تابعیت پر آسمان کې دی (zamung tabe’iyat par aasman ke day, “our citizenship is in heaven”) using تابعیت (tabe’iyat, the standard modern legal/political term for citizenship/nationality). This is one of the sharpest cultural-collision points in the whole curriculum: Pashtun identity is intensely organized around tribal/national belonging (qawm, watan), contested and fraught given Afghanistan-Pakistan border realities (the Durand Line dispute) and widespread statelessness/refugee experience; and the Taliban’s explicit “Islamic Emirate” framing already flagged Medium risk in the baseline’s kingdom_of_god entry represents a direct, live, competing claim on ultimate political-religious allegiance. To assert that believers’ true “citizenship” (tabe’iyat) lies elsewhere is not an abstract spiritual metaphor for this audience but a claim with real, current political resonance and potential danger; it must be taught pastorally as displacing ultimate (not necessarily practical/legal) allegiance, and requires the same security sensitivity as the baseline’s mission_to_nations and church_as_gods_people entries. Human theologian review mandatory. |
| transform / conform to his glorious body | μετασχηματίσει … σύμμορφον τῷ σώματι τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ | metaschēmatisei … symmorphon tō sōmati tēs doxēs autou | he will transform/refashion … conformed to the body of his glory | future bodily resurrection transformation, matching Christ’s own risen, glorified body | ”will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body” | Ties heavenly citizenship (3:20) to bodily resurrection hope (3:21), reusing جلال (glory, baseline term) and the μορφ- (form) root already tracked through the chapter. | High. Render زموږ ټیټ بدن به د هغه له جلالي بدن سره برابر کړي, reusing جلال (glory) exactly per baseline. Shares Critical-adjacent resurrection-doctrine risk; treat with same care as resurrection entry above. |
| enemies of the cross of Christ | ἐχθροὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ τοῦ Χριστοῦ | echthroi tou staurou tou Christou | enemies of the cross of Christ | those who live in a manner opposed to the meaning/demand of Christ’s cross | ”enemies of the cross of Christ” | Warning against false teachers/self-indulgent living that contradicts the self-emptying, self-giving pattern of the Christ-hymn. | Medium. Reuse baseline صلیب (cross, from core passage v.8): د مسیح د صلیب دښمنان. |
| minds set on earthly things | τὰ ἐπίγεια φρονοῦντες | ta epigeia phronountes | thinking/minding earthly things | the same φρονέω (phroneō) root as the “same mind”/“this mind” vocabulary of 2:2-5 | ”their minds are set on earthly things,” “who mind earthly things” (KJV) | Direct negative counterpart to the Christ-like, heavenward “mind” (phroneō) commanded in ch.2 and reinforced by “citizenship in heaven” (3:20) immediately following. | Medium-High. Render ځمکنیو شیانو ته يې فکر featured, or دنیوي شیانو باندې فکر کول (thinking on worldly things). Flag the recurring φρονέω root for translator awareness across 1:7; 2:2, 5; 3:15, 19; 4:2, 10 — while a single fixed Pashto word need not be forced in every instance, the conceptual thread (right vs. wrong “mind-set”) should be traceable through the translation. |
Chapter 4 (Philippians 4:1-23)
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| same mind in the Lord | τὸ αὐτὸ φρονεῖν ἐν κυρίῳ | to auto phronein en kyriō | to think the same thing in the Lord | see 2:2 entry | ”agree in the Lord,” “be of the same mind in the Lord” | Paul’s appeal to Euodia and Syntyche (4:2) applies the ch.2 unity doctrine to a concrete local conflict. | Reuse همفکري / يو فکر rendering established at 2:2, High risk as documented there. |
| rejoice in the Lord always | χαίρετε ἐν κυρίῳ πάντοτε | chairete en kyriō pantote | rejoice in the Lord always | see joy entries above | ”rejoice in the Lord always… again I will say, rejoice” | The letter’s most concentrated statement of joy-as-command, regardless of circumstance (4:4) — the climactic textual anchor for “Joy in Suffering.” | Reuse خوشحالي / خوشحالېدل exactly, High risk as established; render همیشه په خداوند کې خوشحاله اوسئ. |
| peace of God which surpasses all understanding | ἡ εἰρήνη τοῦ θεοῦ ἡ ὑπερέχουσα πάντα νοῦν | hē eirēnē tou theou hē hyperechousa panta noun | the peace of God which surpasses every mind/understanding | supernatural, inexplicable peace given by God, exceeding human reasoning’s ability to produce or fully comprehend | ”the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding” | Direct answer to anxious prayer (4:6-7) — reuses baseline peace (سوله) but here specifically as an internal, guarding, supernatural gift. | Medium. Reuse baseline سوله exactly, noting the baseline’s own observation that سوله resonates strongly with lived experience of war/conflict-ending negotiation (sola jirga) — here the sense shifts slightly from “peace with God” (Romans 5:1, justification) to an internal, Spirit-given peace “which surpasses understanding” (guarding the heart amid anxiety); both senses should be taught as connected but distinct applications of the same root reality. |
| requests / petitions | αἰτήματα | aitēmata | requests, petitions | things asked for in prayer | ”requests,” “petitions” | Part of the “prayer and supplication with thanksgiving” formula (4:6). | Low. Render غوښتنې (ghushtane, requests). |
| supplication | δέησις | deēsis | earnest request, entreaty | a form of prayer emphasizing need/entreaty | ”supplication,” “prayer” | Paired with “prayer” (προσευχή) in 4:6; connects to baseline’s Medium-risk prayer_and_intercession doctrine. | Low-Medium. Render دعا/زاري (du’a/zaari, prayer/earnest entreaty). |
| think on these things | λογίζεσθε | logizesthe | reckon, consider, take into account | deliberate mental focus/evaluation (also the verb used for “reckoned/credited” righteousness in Romans 4 — same root as the baseline’s imputed_righteousness entry) | “think on these things,” “dwell on these things,” “meditate on these things” | Paul’s list of virtues (true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable) to be the deliberate object of the mind (4:8). | Low-Medium. Render فکر/غور وکړئ (think/reflect on). Note the shared λογίζ- root with imputed righteousness (Romans 4/baseline محسوبه شوی صداقت) is an interesting intertextual link for translator awareness, though a distinct Pashto rendering is appropriate here given the different context (ethical meditation, not forensic crediting). |
| learned the secret / I have learned to be content | ἔμαθον … μεμύημαι | emathon … memyēmai | I learned … I have been initiated/let into the secret | μεμύημαι specifically evokes the technical vocabulary of Greco-Roman mystery-religion initiation (“I have been initiated into the mystery”) | “I have learned the secret of being content,” “I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content” (KJV) | Paul’s hard-won, experiential contentment regardless of circumstance (4:11-12) — directly anchors curriculum doctrine “Contentment in All Circumstances.” | High. Render زه دا راز زده کړی دی (za da raaz zda kray day, “I have learned this secret”) or simply زه دا زده کړې ده چې… (I have learned that…) to avoid over-technical mystery-cult vocabulary. CAUTION: “learning a secret” through lived experience could be conflated with Sufi mystical initiation traditions prominent among Pashtuns (a pir/spiritual master transmitting hidden sirr/secret knowledge to a disciple through stages of spiritual advancement) — a live and specific risk given the baseline’s own note about the region’s rich Sufi poetic-devotional tradition (Rahman Baba, Khushal Khan Khattak). Must be taught as Paul’s own lived, Christ-dependent experience (4:13, “through him who strengthens me”), available to every ordinary believer, not an esoteric attainment reserved for spiritual elites under a human master’s guidance. |
| contentment | αὐτάρκεια / αὐτάρκης | autarkeia / autarkēs | self-sufficiency, contentment | a well-known Stoic philosophical ideal (self-sufficient imperviousness to circumstance) which Paul deliberately redefines as Christ-dependent, not self-generated | ”content,” “contentment,” “self-sufficient” (in non-biblical Greek usage) | Directly names curriculum doctrine “Contentment in All Circumstances” (4:11) — crucially, Paul’s contentment is explicitly Christ-empowered (4:13), not autonomous self-sufficiency. | High. Render قناعت (qanaat), the existing, positively-regarded Islamic/regional ethical virtue term for contentment/satisfaction with one’s lot. Genuine cultural asset (an already-honored virtue, similar in function to the baseline’s treatment of سوله/peace and تواضع/humility as bridge-terms) — BUT qanaat in Islamic and folk usage is frequently bound to fatalistic acceptance of qadar (divine decree) or Sufi ascetic detachment from worldly desire achieved by the self’s own discipline. Paul’s contentment is explicitly relational and Christ-dependent (“through him who strengthens me,” 4:13), not self-achieved detachment or resigned fatalism. This distinction must be actively taught, following the same “asset requiring correction” pattern as the baseline’s peace/سوله entry. |
| I can do all things through him who strengthens me | πάντα ἰσχύω ἐν τῷ ἐνδυναμοῦντί με | panta ischyō en tō endynamounti me | I am strong/able for all things in the one strengthening me | Christ-dependent capability, in context specifically about enduring both scarcity and abundance with contentment | ”I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” “I can do everything through him who gives me strength” (NIV) | Immediate ground for Paul’s contentment claim — often quoted in isolation and misapplied as a generic promise of success/achievement rather than its actual context of enduring hardship and plenty alike with contentment. | Medium-High. Render زه د هغه چا په مرسته چې ما ته قوت راکوي هر څه کولی شم (za da hagha cha pa maraste che maa ta qowat rakawi har tsa kawlai sham). Flag for translator/teaching note: this verse must be anchored to its immediate context (contentment amid want and plenty, 4:11-13), not extracted as a general promise of success, achievement, or health/wealth — a common misapplication risk in many language traditions, worth flagging explicitly here. |
| God will supply every need | πληρώσει πᾶσαν χρείαν ὑμῶν | plērōsei pasan chreian hymōn | he will fill/fulfill all your need | God’s provision, in the specific context of the Philippians’ sacrificial financial gift to Paul (4:15-18) | “my God will supply every need of yours,” “God shall supply all your need” (KJV) | A promise rooted in the immediate narrative of the Philippians’ partnership-in-giving (4:10-19), not a context-free blanket guarantee. | Medium. Render خدای به ستاسو ټولې اړتیاوې پوره کړي (Khudai ba stasso tolay aratyawe pura kri). Flag same prosperity-gospel misapplication risk as above — teach in its actual context of sacrificial giving and God’s faithful provision for those who give, not a general wealth guarantee. |
| fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God | ὀσμὴ εὐωδίας, θυσία δεκτή, εὐάρεστος τῷ θεῷ | osmē euōdias, thysia dektē, euarestos tō theō | an odor/aroma of sweet fragrance, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God | Old Testament sacrificial-system imagery (cf. Leviticus’s “pleasing aroma” offerings) applied metaphorically to the Philippians’ financial gift | ”a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God” | The Philippians’ gift to Paul is described in explicitly sacrificial-cultic terms, elevating their material partnership (echoing 1:5’s κοινωνία) to an act of worship. | Medium. Render يوه خوشبويه قربانۍ، منل شوی او خدای ته خوښ قربان (a fragrant sacrifice, an accepted and God-pleasing offering). Requires OT sacrificial-system background explanation for readers without deep familiarity with Levitical imagery; connect explicitly back to ch.1’s κοινωνία (partnership in the gospel) so the material-gift-as-worship link is not lost. |
| Rejoice in the Lord | Χαίρετε ἐν κυρίῳ | Chairete en kyriō | Rejoice in the Lord | closing benediction-adjacent exhortation, bookending the letter’s joy theme | ”Rejoice in the Lord” | Final reiteration of the letter’s dominant note. | Reuse خوشحالي / خوشحالېدل exactly, High risk as established. |
