Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: Colossians — English → Pashto
This document is the Phase 1 Step 4 full doctrine matrix for the Colossians curriculum, extending the Romans baseline Language Package for Pashto. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: the same 26 doctrines, the same risk tiers, the same review routing. Colossians 1:15-20 (the Christ-hymn) is the theological anchor of the curriculum, but per the PRD Phase 1 mandate this analysis spans every chapter, first to last, so that no load-bearing doctrinal content is silently omitted.
Methodology
Each chapter of Colossians was reviewed in full for:
- Doctrines already established in the Romans baseline that recur here (reused terms, same risk tier).
- Doctrines newly load-bearing in Colossians (documented in
08_core_glossary.mdSection B and now assigned formal doctrine status here). - Sections that, while theologically rich, introduce no new doctrinal risk beyond what is already tabulated — these are explicitly marked “reviewed, no new doctrine” rather than omitted.
Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage
Colossians 1 (1:1-29)
The opening greeting, thanksgiving, and prayer (1:1-14) establish grace, faith, saints, gospel, and thanksgiving (all Romans-baseline terms, reused without modification) alongside two Colossians-specific doctrines: Adoption and Inheritance in God’s Household (1:12-14, the “inheritance,” “domain of darkness,” “kingdom of the beloved Son”) and Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins (1:14). The Christ-hymn (1:15-20) is the curriculum’s core passage and carries the highest doctrinal density in the letter: Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation, Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily (anticipated via “image,” fully stated at 1:19), Sonship of Christ, Christ as Head of the Church, Church as Christ’s Body, and Reconciliation through the Cross. Verses 21-23 extend reconciliation and introduce Resurrection of Christ by implication (1:18’s “firstborn from the dead”). Verses 24-29 introduce Sufficiency of Christ’s Atoning Suffering (1:24, the letter’s single most dangerous verse to mistranslate), The Mystery of Christ Revealed (1:26-27), Christian Identity in Christ (1:27, “Christ in you”), Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ (1:28), and background stewardship vocabulary (1:25, no independent doctrine entry — see glossary term 53).
Colossians 2 (2:1-23)
Continues The Mystery of Christ Revealed (2:2-3, paired with Wisdom and Knowledge) before pivoting to the chapter’s dominant concern, the Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism (2:8, 2:16-23) — philosophy, human tradition, elemental spirits, decrees, worship of angels, self-made religion. Verses 9-10 restate Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily and Sufficiency of Christ’s Atoning Suffering in their sharpest form (“in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily… you have been filled in him”). Verses 11-14 establish Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him) and Baptism as Participation in Christ’s Death and Resurrection, together with a second occurrence of Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins (2:13-14, the “certificate of debt”). Verse 15 gives Christ’s Triumph over Spiritual Powers its clearest statement (disarming and triumphing over rulers and authorities). Verses 16-19 continue the syncretism warning with the shadow/substance contrast and the first occurrence of the vice-sense of Warning against Asceticism and False Humility (2:18, 2:23). Verse 20 restates Union with Christ (“died with Christ to the elemental spirits”).
Colossians 3 (3:1-25)
Opens with the second grounding of Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him) (3:1-4, “raised with Christ… hidden with Christ”), directly presupposing the historical Resurrection of Christ. Verses 5-11 establish Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New and Renewal in the Image of the Creator (3:10, deliberately reusing 1:15’s “image” vocabulary), culminating in 3:11’s radical restatement of Christian Identity in Christ (“no Greek and Jew… but Christ is all”). Verses 12-14 give the virtue-sense of Warning against Asceticism and False Humility (true humility, 3:12) and establish Forgiveness and Community Ethics (bond of perfection, compassionate hearts, forgive as the Lord forgave). Verse 15-17 restate Kingdom/peace themes and introduce The Word of Christ in Corporate Worship (3:16), plus a further Thanksgiving occurrence. Verses 18-25 are the first half of the Household Codes, including Lordship of Christ (3:24’s “reward from the Lord”), a further Adoption and Inheritance occurrence (3:24), and the opening of Slavery and Christian Ethics in the Household Code (3:22-25).
Colossians 4 (4:1-18)
Verse 1 completes the Household Codes unit begun in 3:18, containing the letter’s sharpest Lordship of Christ disambiguation challenge (κύριος used for both a human master and God/Christ in the same verse) and completing Slavery and Christian Ethics in the Household Code. Verses 2-6 establish Mission and Evangelism under Persecution (“open door for the word,” “mystery of Christ for which I am in chains”) and restate Prayer and Intercession and Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ (4:5, “walk in wisdom toward outsiders”), plus a final Thanksgiving occurrence (4:2). Verses 7-18 (greetings and co-worker commendations) are reviewed and contain no new doctrine beyond background Christian Fellowship vocabulary already fixed in the Romans baseline (کلیسا/ملګرتیا-root terms); no new entry is warranted, and this section is noted here explicitly as reviewed rather than silently omitted.
Full Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Supporting Passages (Colossians) | Risk | Translation Risk (grounded reason) | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation | 1:15-17, 1:18b, 2:10 | Critical | ”Firstborn” (لومړی زوی) without a mandatory preeminence gloss confirms the Quranic reading of Christ as a created being rather than eternal Creator — the single most exploitable term in the letter for an Arian/Islamic misreading; must always pair with “before all things” (1:17) and the creation-agency verb (1:16). | Human theologian |
| 2 | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | 1:19, 2:9, 1:15 | Critical | بشپړتیا (fullness) must communicate totality, not a fragment or emanation, of God’s nature dwelling in Christ bodily; anything less concedes the tawhid objection that Christ is at most an honored created vessel of divine power — the paradigm case of shirk from a tawhid standpoint. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Sonship of Christ | 1:13, 1:15, 3:1 | Critical | The Quranic denial (112:3, 19:35), already Critical in the Romans baseline, is intensified here by “firstborn” language sitting in close proximity to “beloved Son,” which must not be allowed to collapse eternal Sonship into a created-being reading. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Christ as Head of the Church | 1:18, 1:24, 2:19 | High | سر (head) is the same word later applied to a husband’s headship (3:18); in a strongly patriarchal Pashtun culture hearers default to top-down authority, so Christ’s headship must be explicitly taught with its self-sacrificial, cross-shaped content, not generic hierarchical control. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Church as Christ’s Body | 1:18, 1:24, 3:15 | Critical | Extends the Romans baseline’s Critical “Church as God’s People” rating; بدن (body) must never be rendered as a mere organization or committee, and must be taught with the same persecuted, dispersed-community framing already required in Afghanistan/Pakistan. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:20, 1:22, 2:14 | Critical | پخلاینه is Pashtunwali’s own word for ending a feud, normally negotiated BETWEEN two roughly equal hostile parties via a mediating jirga; biblical reconciliation must be taught as God’s sovereign, unilateral, gracious initiative toward guilty humanity, not a negotiated settlement of equals. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Resurrection of Christ | 1:18, 2:12, 3:1 | Critical | Shares the Quran’s crucifixion-denial (4:157), already Critical in the Romans baseline; Colossians grounds the believer’s own resurrection-with-Christ directly on this historical event, doubling the doctrinal stakes of any softening. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:8, 2:16-23 | Critical | The warning against appeasing cosmic “elemental spirits” and angelic intermediaries intersects directly with live Pashtun folk-Islamic practice around jinn, the evil eye, and protective amulets (taweez); mistranslation risks implying these powers are equal independent forces to fear, or appearing to attack mainstream Islamic angelology and tradition wholesale rather than a specific syncretistic teaching. | Human theologian |
| 9 | The Mystery of Christ Revealed | 1:26-27, 2:2, 4:3 | High | راز (mystery) is a live term in regional Sufi devotional poetry for ongoing hidden truth reserved for initiates — the opposite of Paul’s point that this mystery is NOW OPENLY DISCLOSED; every occurrence must pair راز with explicit “now revealed” language. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him) | 2:11-12, 2:20, 3:1-4 | Critical | The believer’s own “raising with Christ” presupposes Christ’s historical resurrection actually occurred; teaching this doctrine in isolation from that historical grounding leaves it vulnerable to the same crucifixion/resurrection-denial pressure already flagged Critical throughout the Romans baseline. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Baptism as Participation in Christ’s Death and Resurrection | 2:12 | Critical | تعمید must be sharply distinguished from Islamic ritual washing (غسل/وضو), a repeated ceremonial-purity act before prayer; this describes a one-time participatory union with Christ’s death and resurrection, not a repeatable purification rite. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Sufficiency of Christ’s Atoning Suffering | 1:24, 1:19-20, 2:9-10 | Critical | Colossians 1:24’s “filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions” is the single most theologically dangerous verse in the letter: any rendering suggesting Christ’s own atoning suffering was incomplete directly contradicts the letter’s sufficiency-of-Christ doctrine and hands a ready-made argument to interlocutors primed by Islamic theology to see the cross as unnecessary or insufficient. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | 3:5-10 | High | The clothing metaphor is a genuine cultural asset given Pashtun dress-and-honor culture (turban, chador as identity markers), but without care it can be flattened into external behavior modification or social performance for honor rather than Spirit-empowered inward transformation. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Renewal in the Image of the Creator | 3:10 | High | Reuses the same انځور (image) word as 1:15’s Christ-hymn; if rendered inconsistently between the two passages, Paul’s deliberate literary link between cosmic Christology and personal renewal is lost. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Household Codes | 3:18-4:1 | Critical | The same Greek word (κύριος) denotes an ordinary human household master (3:22, 4:1a) and God/Christ as heavenly Lord (4:1b) within the same short unit; using خداوند for the human master dilutes the baseline’s Critical, exclusive reservation of that word for Christ, while using مالک for God undershoots the deity claim — the two senses must be tracked clause by clause. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Lordship of Christ | 1:3, 2:6, 3:17, 3:24, 4:1 | Critical | خداوند must never be diluted by association with the ordinary human “masters” addressed in the same household-code unit; every occurrence applied to Christ/God must retain the exclusive, supreme sense already fixed Critical in the Romans baseline (10:9). | Human theologian |
| 17 | Slavery and Christian Ethics in the Household Code | 3:22-25, 4:1 | High | This passage addresses a historically situated first-century social institution and relativizes but does not directly abolish it within the text, grounding slave and master under a common heavenly Master; must be taught with explicit historical framing and never presented as a timeless divine endorsement of slavery, a sensitivity heightened by the region’s own history of bonded labor. | Human theologian |
| 18 | Forgiveness and Community Ethics | 3:12-14 | High | Everyday, grace-grounded mutual forgiveness modeled on Christ’s own costly forgiveness must be distinguished from Pashtunwali’s نانواتی, a formal, one-time ritual-submission act ending a specific blood feud; collapsing the two reduces ongoing Christian forgiveness to an occasional formal transaction. | Human theologian |
| 19 | Christ’s Triumph over Spiritual Powers | 1:16, 2:10, 2:15, 2:20 | High | A genuine positive apologetic resource against widespread Pashtun folk-Islamic fear of jinn, the evil eye, and protective amulets (taweez): Christ’s cross is an already-accomplished, total, public triumph over every such power, not an invitation to relocate appeasement practices into a “Christian” spiritual-warfare framework that repeats the same appeasement logic. | Human theologian |
| 20 | Warning against Asceticism and False Humility | 2:18, 2:23, 3:12 | High | Self-imposed ascetic severity closely parallels regional Sufi mystical practice, already High risk in the Romans baseline’s “Separation unto God’s Service” doctrine; the SAME Greek word (tapeinophrosynē) must receive two DIFFERENT Pashto renderings depending on whether it names the criticized false self-abasement (2:18, 2:23) or the genuine Spirit-produced virtue (3:12). | Human theologian |
| 21 | Adoption and Inheritance in God’s Household | 1:12-14, 3:24 | High | Extends the Romans baseline’s Critical Adoption doctrine into a pointed, countercultural application: God’s household economy credits even a socially low-status slave with a full inheritance-reward, directly challenging the rigid patrilineal tribal genealogy (qawm/khel descent) by which Pashtun inheritance and status are normally determined. | Human theologian |
| 22 | Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins | 1:14, 2:13-14 | High | خلاصون (redemption) must never be rendered with فدیه, the specific Islamic legal term for a compensatory exemption-payment (e.g., fidya), which would reduce Christ’s costly, personal deliverance from bondage to a narrow legalistic exemption rather than an outright cancellation of a real debt. | Human theologian |
| 23 | Christian Identity in Christ | 1:27, 2:6-7, 3:1-4, 3:11 | High | Extends the Romans baseline’s High-risk doctrine; Colossians 3:11’s “no Greek and Jew… but Christ is all” presses this identity claim directly against tribal genealogy (qawm/khel) and honor-code standing, the primary anchors of Pashtun social identity, and must be taught as replacing rather than merely supplementing those categories. | Human theologian |
| 24 | Mission and Evangelism under Persecution | 4:2-6 | Critical | Paul’s own imprisonment for proclaiming “the mystery of Christ” directly parallels the real, severe legal and social danger — including potential capital punishment for apostasy under some interpretations enforced in Taliban-controlled areas — faced by evangelists and converts in the Pashto-speaking world today. | Human theologian |
| 25 | Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ | 1:9, 1:28, 2:3, 4:5 | Medium | حکمت (wisdom) is a broadly compatible shared virtue term paralleling Islamic hikmah, similar in risk profile to the baseline’s Low-risk شکر; the doctrinal point that ALL wisdom and knowledge reside in Christ, ruling out supplementary secret knowledge, must be kept anchored specifically to Christ rather than left generic. | Native speaker review |
| 26 | The Word of Christ in Corporate Worship | 3:16 | Medium | Established regional Bible tradition often renders Logos-adjacent “word” vocabulary as کلام, but that word also denotes Quranic revelation (Kalam Allah) and Islamic kalam theology; since 3:16 refers to Christ’s own message dwelling in the community rather than a technical Logos-Christology claim, the less loaded خبرې/پیغام is preferred. | Native speaker review |
| 27 | Kingdom of the Beloved Son | 1:13 | Medium | Extends the Romans baseline’s Medium-risk Kingdom of God doctrine with explicit Christ-centered, already-inaugurated framing; must be distinguished from competing political-religious sovereignty claims in the region’s recent history, including explicit “Islamic Emirate” state framing. | Native speaker review |
| 28 | Prayer and Intercession | 4:2-4, 4:12 | Medium | Extends the Romans baseline’s Medium-risk doctrine; Epaphras’s “struggling in prayer” (4:12) should be taught as intense, ongoing intercessory labor, not confused with the formal نانواتی mediation custom already reserved as a cultural bridge for Christ’s unique intercession specifically. | Native speaker review |
| 29 | Thanksgiving | 1:3, 1:12, 3:15, 3:17, 4:2 | Low | شکر is also a major Islamic virtue; broadly compatible, low risk, consistent with the Romans baseline’s Low rating for this term. | Automated review |
Chapters Reviewed With No New Doctrinal Risk
- Colossians 4:7-18 (greetings and co-worker commendations): reviewed in full; contains only background fellowship/church-community vocabulary already fixed at Critical/Low risk in the Romans baseline (کلیسا, ملګرتیا-root terms) and the Colossians church-as-body doctrine already tabulated above (1:18, 4:15-16). No new doctrine entry is warranted; explicitly noted here rather than silently omitted per the PRD Phase 1 full-book-coverage mandate.

Critical Risk Doctrines
The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Pashto name: د مسیح لومړیتوب او بشپړتیا پر مخلوق
Key terms: firstborn, image, creation, thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities, before all things, preeminent
Review routing: Human theologian
لومړی زوی (firstborn) without the preeminence gloss risks confirming the Quranic reading of Christ as a created being rather than eternal Creator; this is the single most exploitable term in the letter for an Arian/Islamic misreading and must always be taught paired with ‘before all things’ (1:17) and the creation-agency verb (1:16).
Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Pashto name: د مسیح بشپړ الوهیت په بدني ډول
Key terms: fullness, bodily, image, incarnation
Review routing: Human theologian
بشپړتیا (fullness) must communicate the totality, not a fragment or emanation, of God’s nature dwelling in Christ; anything less directly concedes the tawhid objection that Christ is at most an honored created vessel of divine power, the paradigm case of shirk from a tawhid standpoint.
Sonship of Christ
Pashto name: د مسیح زوی توب
Key terms: son of God, his beloved Son, firstborn
Review routing: Human theologian
The same Quranic denial (112:3, 19:35) already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline applies with full force here; Colossians intensifies the risk by using ‘firstborn’ language in close proximity to ‘beloved Son,’ which must not be allowed to collapse Christ’s eternal Sonship into a created-being reading.
Church as Christ’s Body
Pashto name: کلیسا د مسیح بدن په توګه
Key terms: body, church, one body
Review routing: Human theologian
Extends the Romans baseline’s Critical ‘Church as God’s People’ rating; بدن (body) must never be rendered as a mere organization or committee, and must be taught with the same persecuted, dispersed-community framing already required in Afghanistan/Pakistan, where public church buildings are essentially unavailable to Muslim-background believers.
Reconciliation through the Cross
Pashto name: د صلیب له لارې پخلاینه
Key terms: reconcile, making peace, blood of his cross
Review routing: Human theologian
پخلاینه is Pashtunwali’s own word for ending a feud, normally negotiated BETWEEN two roughly equal hostile parties through a mediating jirga; biblical reconciliation must be taught as God’s sovereign, unilateral, gracious initiative toward guilty humanity, not a negotiated settlement of equals, echoing the same caution the baseline already applies to covenant and nanawatai.
Resurrection of Christ
Pashto name: د مسیح بیا راژوندي کیدل
Key terms: firstborn from the dead, raised, resurrection
Review routing: Human theologian
Shares the Quran’s crucifixion-denial (4:157) already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline; Colossians grounds the believer’s own resurrection-with-Christ (2:12, 3:1) directly on this historical event, so any softening here undermines Union with Christ as well, doubling the doctrinal stakes.
Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Pashto name: د غلط تعلیم او مذهبي ګډوډۍ خبرداری
Key terms: philosophy, human tradition, elemental spirits, worship of angels, self-made religion, decrees
Review routing: Human theologian
The warning against appeasing cosmic ‘elemental spirits’ and angelic intermediaries intersects directly with live Pashtun folk-Islamic practice around jinn, the evil eye, and protective amulets (taweez); mistranslation risks either implying these powers are equal independent forces to be feared, or provoking unnecessary offense by appearing to attack mainstream Islamic angelology and tradition (hadith/sunnah) wholesale rather than a specific syncretistic teaching.
Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Pashto name: د مسیح سره یووالی (ورسره مړ شوی او بیا راژوندی شوی)
Key terms: buried with him, raised with him, hidden with Christ, circumcision of Christ
Review routing: Human theologian
The believer’s own ‘raising with Christ’ presupposes Christ’s historical resurrection actually occurred; teaching this doctrine in isolation from that historical grounding leaves it vulnerable to the same crucifixion/resurrection-denial pressure already flagged Critical throughout the Romans baseline.
Baptism as Participation in Christ’s Death and Resurrection
Pashto name: تعمید د مسیح مړینې او بیا راژوندي کیدلو کې ګډون
Key terms: baptism, buried with him
Review routing: Human theologian
تعمید must be sharply distinguished from Islamic ritual washing (غسل/وضو), a repeated ceremonial-purity act before prayer; Colossians 2:12 describes a one-time participatory union with Christ’s death and resurrection, and collapsing the two categories would reduce baptism to a repeatable purification rite rather than a definitive identity change.
Sufficiency of Christ’s Atoning Suffering
Pashto name: د مسیح د قربانۍ بشپړتوب
Key terms: filling up Christ’s afflictions, fullness, reconcile
Review routing: Human theologian
Colossians 1:24’s ‘filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions’ is the single most theologically dangerous verse in the letter to mistranslate: any rendering suggesting Christ’s own atoning suffering was incomplete directly contradicts the letter’s own sufficiency-of-Christ doctrine and would hand a ready-made argument to interlocutors already primed by Islamic theology to see the cross as either unnecessary or insufficient; mandatory footnote and theologian review at every occurrence.
Household Codes
Pashto name: د کورنۍ احکام
Key terms: submit, husbands love, children obey, fathers do not provoke, slaves obey, masters, Lord in heaven
Review routing: Human theologian
This passage requires the sharpest disambiguation in the whole letter: the same Greek word (κύριος) denotes an ordinary human household master (3:22, 4:1a) and God/Christ as heavenly Lord (4:1b) in the same short unit; using خداوند for the human master would dilute the baseline’s Critical, exclusive reservation of that word for Christ’s supreme Lordship, while using مالک for God would undershoot the deity claim — the two senses must be tracked clause by clause and never conflated.
Lordship of Christ
Pashto name: د مسیح خداوندي
Key terms: Lord, Christ Jesus the Lord, Lord in heaven
Review routing: Human theologian
خداوند must never be diluted by association with the ordinary human ‘masters’ addressed in the same household-code unit (3:22-4:1); every occurrence applied to Christ/God must retain the same exclusive, supreme sense already fixed Critical in the Romans baseline (10:9).
Mission and Evangelism under Persecution
Pashto name: د ځورونې لاندې ماموریت او بشارت
Key terms: open door for the word, mystery of Christ for which I am in chains, walk in wisdom toward outsiders
Review routing: Human theologian
Paul’s own imprisonment for proclaiming ‘the mystery of Christ’ directly parallels the real, severe legal and social danger — including potential capital punishment for apostasy under some interpretations enforced in Taliban-controlled areas — faced by evangelists and converts in the Pashto-speaking world today; language of open proclamation must be handled with acute awareness of this danger to both speaker and hearer.
High Risk Doctrines
Christ as Head of the Church
Pashto name: مسیح د کلیسا سر په توګه
Key terms: head, body, church
Review routing: Human theologian
سر (head) is the same word later applied to a husband’s headship in the household code (3:18); in an already strongly patriarchal Pashtun culture, hearers default to top-down authority connotations, so Christ’s headship must be explicitly taught with its self-sacrificial, cross-shaped content (1:20, 24), not generic hierarchical control.
The Mystery of Christ Revealed
Pashto name: د مسیح راز چې اوس ښکاره شوی
Key terms: mystery, Christ in you, riches of glory
Review routing: Human theologian
راز (mystery) is a live term in regional Sufi devotional poetry for an ongoing hidden truth reserved for spiritual initiates — the opposite of Paul’s point that this mystery is NOW OPENLY DISCLOSED to all who believe, including Gentiles; every occurrence must pair راز with explicit ‘now revealed’ language to prevent an esoteric-elite misreading.
Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Pashto name: زوړ انسان لرې کول او نوی انسان اغوستل
Key terms: old self, new self, put off, put on
Review routing: Human theologian
The vivid clothing metaphor is a genuine cultural asset given Pashtun dress-and-honor culture (turban, chador as identity markers), but without care the metaphor can be flattened into external behavior modification or social performance for honor rather than Spirit-empowered inward transformation flowing from union with Christ.
Renewal in the Image of the Creator
Pashto name: د پیدا کوونکي انځور ته بیا نوی کیدل
Key terms: image of the Creator, new self
Review routing: Human theologian
Reuses the same انځور (image) word as 1:15’s Christ-hymn; if rendered inconsistently between the two passages, Paul’s deliberate literary link between cosmic Christology and personal renewal is lost, weakening the doctrinal case that believers are being remade after the pattern of the divine Christ himself.
Slavery and Christian Ethics in the Household Code
Pashto name: غلامي او مسیحي اخلاق په کورنۍ کوډ کې
Key terms: bondservants obey, masters treat justly, inheritance from the Lord
Review routing: Human theologian
This passage addresses a real, historically situated first-century social institution and relativizes but does not directly abolish it within the text itself, grounding both slave and master under a common heavenly Master who shows no partiality; it must be taught with explicit historical framing and never presented or excerpted as a timeless divine endorsement of slavery, a sensitivity heightened by the region’s own history of bonded labor and servitude.
Forgiveness and Community Ethics
Pashto name: بښنه او د ټولنې اخلاق
Key terms: forgive as the Lord forgave, bond of perfection, compassionate hearts
Review routing: Human theologian
Everyday, grace-grounded mutual forgiveness modeled on Christ’s own costly forgiveness must be distinguished from Pashtunwali’s نانواتی, a formal, one-time ritual-submission act that ends a specific blood feud; collapsing the two risks reducing ongoing Christian forgiveness to an occasional formal transaction rather than a continuous grace-shaped posture.
Christ’s Triumph over Spiritual Powers
Pashto name: پر روحاني واکونو د مسیح بریا
Key terms: thrones dominions rulers authorities, disarmed and triumphed over, elemental spirits
Review routing: Human theologian
This is a genuine positive apologetic resource against the widespread Pashtun folk-Islamic fear of jinn, the evil eye, and reliance on protective amulets (taweez): Christ’s cross is an already-accomplished, total, public military-style triumph over every such power, not an invitation to relocate appeasement practices into a ‘Christian’ spiritual-warfare framework that merely repeats the same appeasement logic.
Warning against Asceticism and False Humility
Pashto name: د خوځښت (رياضت) او درغلي عاجزۍ خبرداری
Key terms: self-made religion, severity to the body, false humility, true humility
Review routing: Human theologian
Self-imposed ascetic severity closely parallels regional Sufi mystical practice (self-mortification, extreme fasting, withdrawal), already flagged High risk in the Romans baseline’s ‘Separation unto God’s Service’ doctrine; the SAME Greek word (tapeinophrosynē) must receive two DIFFERENT Pashto renderings depending on whether it names the criticized false self-abasement (2:18, 2:23) or the genuine Spirit-produced virtue (3:12), since collapsing the distinction either condemns true humility or endorses the very asceticism Paul rejects.
Adoption and Inheritance in God’s Household
Pashto name: د خدای کورنۍ کې زوی توب او میراث
Key terms: inheritance, kingdom of the beloved Son, domain of darkness
Review routing: Human theologian
Extends the Romans baseline’s Critical Adoption doctrine into a pointed, countercultural application: God’s household economy credits even a socially low-status slave with a full inheritance-reward, directly challenging the rigid patrilineal tribal genealogy (qawm/khel descent) by which Pashtun inheritance and status are normally determined.
Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Pashto name: خلاصون او د ګناهانو بښنه
Key terms: redemption, forgiveness of sins, certificate of debt
Review routing: Human theologian
خلاصون (redemption) must never be rendered with فدیه, the specific Islamic legal term for a compensatory exemption-payment (e.g., fidya for a missed religious duty), which would reduce Christ’s costly, personal deliverance from bondage to a narrow legalistic exemption rather than an outright cancellation of a real debt, as pictured in the ‘certificate of debt’ metaphor of 2:14.
Christian Identity in Christ
Pashto name: په مسیح کې مسیحي پیژندنه
Key terms: Christ in you, hidden with Christ, in Christ
Review routing: Human theologian
Extends the Romans baseline’s High-risk ‘Christian Identity in Christ’ doctrine; Colossians 3:11’s ‘no Greek and Jew… but Christ is all’ presses this identity claim directly against tribal genealogy (qawm/khel) and honor-code standing, the primary anchors of Pashtun social identity, and must be taught as replacing rather than merely supplementing those categories.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ
Pashto name: په مسیح کې پټ حکمت او پوهه
Key terms: wisdom, treasures of wisdom and knowledge, stewardship
Review routing: Native speaker review
حکمت (wisdom) is a broadly compatible shared virtue term paralleling Islamic hikmah, similar in risk profile to the baseline’s Low-risk شکر (thanksgiving); the doctrinal point that ALL wisdom and knowledge, without remainder, reside in Christ (ruling out supplementary secret knowledge) must be kept anchored specifically to Christ rather than left as generic sagacity.
The Word of Christ in Corporate Worship
Pashto name: د مسیح خبرې او ګډ عبادت
Key terms: word of Christ dwell richly, psalms hymns spiritual songs
Review routing: Native speaker review
Established regional Bible tradition often renders Logos-adjacent ‘word’ vocabulary as کلام, but that word also denotes Quranic revelation (Kalam Allah) and Islamic kalam theology; since Colossians 3:16 refers to Christ’s own teaching/message dwelling in the believing community rather than a technical Logos-Christology claim, the less loaded خبرې/پیغام is preferred here to avoid an unintended equation with the Quranic revelation category.
Kingdom of the Beloved Son
Pashto name: د ګران زوی پاچاهي
Key terms: kingdom of his beloved Son, domain of darkness
Review routing: Native speaker review
Extends the Romans baseline’s Medium-risk Kingdom of God doctrine with an explicit Christ-centered, already-inaugurated framing; must be distinguished from competing political-religious sovereignty claims in the region’s recent history, including explicit ‘Islamic Emirate’ state framing, per the baseline’s existing caution.
Prayer and Intercession
Pashto name: دعا او منځګړیتوب
Key terms: devote yourselves to prayer, open door for the word, struggling in prayer
Review routing: Native speaker review
Extends the Romans baseline’s Medium-risk Prayer and Intercession doctrine into Colossians’ closing exhortations; Epaphras’s ‘struggling in prayer’ (4:12) should be taught as intense, ongoing intercessory labor, not confused with the formal نانواتی mediation custom already reserved as a cultural bridge for Christ’s unique intercession specifically.
Low Risk Doctrines
Thanksgiving
Pashto name: شکر
Key terms: thanksgiving, give thanks
Review routing: Automated review
شکر is also a major Islamic virtue; broadly compatible, low risk, consistent with the Romans baseline’s Low rating for this term.
