Linguistic Gap Analysis

Linguistic Gap Analysis: 2 John (English → Pashto)

Purpose

This document identifies where standard Pashto vocabulary is adequate, deficient, missing, or dangerously overloaded for the four core doctrines of this curriculum, and prescribes fencing and transliteration/paraphrase strategy ahead of Phase 2 segment translation. It extends, and must not contradict, the Romans translation_memory.json baseline and the 2 John 08_core_glossary.md and bible_term_registry.json already produced. Risk tiers (Critical/High/Medium/Low) follow the baseline’s doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions exactly.

Full-chapter coverage note: 2 John has only one chapter (13 verses). All 13 verses have been reviewed. §6 below maps every verse to its vocabulary load; verses contributing no new terms (1:2–3 salutation reuse, 1:12–13 closing) are explicitly marked “reviewed, no new vocabulary” rather than omitted.

1. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix

1.1 Walking in Truth and Love (۲ یوحنا ۱:۱–۶)

Available Pashto term(s)Weakness / collision riskRecommended strategy
رښتیا (truth) vs. حقیقت (rejected)حقیقت is closely tied to الحق (al-Ḥaqq), a divine name in regional Islamic piety; using it collapses Johannine personal, Christ-revealed truth into a generic divine-attribute claimMandate رښتیا throughout; never substitute حقیقت. Teach truth as a relational, Christ-anchored reality (cf. 1:1–2’s “truth that abides in us”), not abstract correctness
مینه (love)Undifferentiated in ordinary Pashto from familial/romantic affection; collides with Pashtunwali’s nang-bound, reciprocity-generating loyalty and melmastia-style honor-debt loveRetain مینه (no lexical alternative exists) but require an explicit teaching gloss at first occurrence establishing agapē as freely willed and non-reciprocal, paralleling the baseline’s grace/melmastia caution
حکم (commandment)حکم is also the standard word for a Shari’a legal ruling; unqualified use risks reading the Father’s charge as an independent legal ordinance parallel to Islamic hukmNever use حکم unqualified in this letter; always pair with “د پلار حکم” (the Father’s commandment) or explicit relational framing (1:4–6)
نوی (new) / پیل (beginning)The claim that this is “not a new commandment” but one held “from the beginning” collides with the Islamic doctrine of naskh (abrogation), where later revelation supersedes earlier revelationExplicit teaching note at 1:5 clarifying this is an anti-naskh, fixed-revelation claim, echoing the baseline’s High-risk “Fulfillment of Prophecy” collision
چلند کول (walk/conduct oneself)Literal “walking” (ګرځېدل) will not by itself convey “manner of life” to a reader unfamiliar with the biblical idiomPair چلند کول with the literal walking image on first occurrence (1:4) to teach the metaphor explicitly, not assume it is transparent

1.2 Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation (۲ یوحنا ۱:۷)

Available Pashto term(s)Weakness / collision riskRecommended strategy
ګمراه کوونکی (deceiver)Sits inside the Islamic guidance/misguidance (hidayah/ḍalāl) framework, where the Qur’an and Sunnah are the corrective authority — risks being redirected back onto the Christian message itself as “the” misguidanceAnchor every occurrence tightly to the specific denial named in 1:7b (incarnation), never leave as a generic “false religion” charge
ضد مسیح (antichrist) vs. الدجال (rejected)دجال imports the entire Sunni end-times apocalyptic scheme (Mahdi, Dajjal, Isa’s return to defeat Dajjal) — a narrative that itself denies Christ’s crucifixion, resurrection, and deityضد مسیح mandatory, never دجال. Add to Critical Forbidden Substitutions list for this curriculum. Human theologian review on every occurrence
اقرار کول (confess)Resonates with the shahada confession-formula structure central to Islamic religious identityTeach as confession of specific historical-theological content (Christ’s incarnation), never a ritual formula analogous to the shahada
په غوښه راتلل + تجسد (coming in the flesh / incarnation)The single highest-stakes phrase in the letter: shares the Qur’an’s tawhid objection to God taking human form, compounded by mainstream Islamic Christology’s explicit denial of exactly this claim, further compounded by Pashto’s thinnest Christian theological precedent in this pipelineAlways render both together — literal/periphrastic په غوښه راتلل alongside the technical doctrinal noun تجسد — never the noun alone. Mandatory human theologian review
عیسی / مسیح (reused baseline)Both names carry pre-loaded Quranic content (prophet-only, non-incarnate, non-divine) that this verse directly attacksEvery occurrence in 1:7 and 1:9 must actively assert, not merely name, the incarnational and divine content under denial
دنیا (world)Carries the Islamic dunya/ākhirah (this-world/next-world) ethical dichotomy, not identical to John’s usageEnsure the moral-sphere sense (opposed to God’s truth) is retained; do not flatten to “worldly [non-religious] life”

1.3 Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment (۲ یوحنا ۱:۱۰–۱۱)

Available Pashto term(s)Weakness / collision riskRecommended strategy
کور ته منل / راوستل (receive into the house)Runs directly against Pashtunwali’s melmastia code, which treats receiving any traveler — even a stranger or enemy — as a near-sacred, honor-bound dutyEvery occurrence must carry explicit doctrinal reasoning (withholding = non-endorsement of false teaching about Christ, not personal enmity), never presented as a blanket anti-hospitality command
کور (house)In much of the Pashto-speaking world there is no public church building; “the house” often is the church, so refusal carries real, sometimes life-threatening, security implicationsTeach alongside the baseline’s Critical “Church as God’s People” doctrine — a dispersed, covert house-church in view, not a private domestic matter only
withheld greeting formula (χαίρειν) — NOT سلامWithholding سلام among Pashtuns signals excommunication, blood feud, or irreversible enmity; generalizing this beyond the narrow doctrinal-fellowship context could expose a Muslim-background believer as an apostate at real personal riskNEVER render with سلام. Use a narrow, context-bound phrase (a doctrinal-welcome formula) tied only to 1:10a, with a mandatory translator’s note distinguishing it from everyday social salam obligations. Human theologian review mandatory
ملګری کیدل (share in, v.11) vs. شریکول (rejected)شریکول shares the ش-ر-ک root with shirk (idolatrous partnership), already forbidden for the noun “fellowship” in the Romans baselineExtend the baseline’s forbidden-substitution rule explicitly to this verb form; mandate ملګری کیدل
بد عملونه (evil works)عمل (amal) is a major Islamic deeds-weighing term recorded and judged at the endKeep descriptive of the deceiver’s harmful activity only; do not let it drift into a salvation-merit framework, echoing the baseline’s Critical cautions on “salvation” and “imputed_righteousness”

1.4 Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ (۲ یوحنا ۱:۸–۹)

Available Pashto term(s)Weakness / collision riskRecommended strategy
تعلیم (teaching)Ordinary word for Islamic religious/madrasa instruction generallyNever leave bare; always pair with qualifier “د مسیح تعلیم” (the teaching of Christ) at every occurrence, per the core glossary’s enforcement note
قايم پاتې کیدل (abide/remain)Bare “stay” (پاتې کیدل) risks reading as mere physical remaining in one place rather than ongoing relational fidelityRetain the fuller compound قايم پاتې کیدل to capture settled, ongoing doctrinal fidelity
له تعلیم نه مخکې تلل (goes ahead / transgresses)Unqualified مخکې تلل (“goes ahead/forward”) sounds commendable (progress, advancement) — exactly inverted from John’s warningMandatory explicit negative qualifier (“beyond/away from the teaching”) so doctrinal departure is never mistaken for spiritual maturity
اجر (reward)Standard Islamic term for divine recompense for deeds, embedded in a deeds-weighing soteriological frameworkEvery occurrence must clarify this is the fruit of remaining in Christ’s teaching, never the basis of standing before God (that rests on فضل/grace alone) — parallels the baseline’s Critical caution on “salvation”
زوی / د خدای زوی + پلار (reused baseline)1:9 makes possession of both Father and Son a binary salvation test; softening the Son’s deity or unique sonship (per the Quranic denial, 112:3, 19:35) breaks the verse’s logical structurePreserve the Father-Son pairing as an indivisible unit; do not translate “has the Father” and “has the Son” as independent or separable claims

2. Missing Vocabulary (No Adequate Native or Loan Term Exists)

GapDescriptionResolution
AntichristNo native Pashto term exists that names “opposed-to/instead-of Christ” without either (a) importing the loan-word دجال with its full apocalyptic freight, or (b) sounding like a merely generic villainCoin/retain the compound ضد مسیح, built directly on the reserved name مسیح, rather than either a transliteration of ἀντίχριστος or the loan دجال
Incarnation (technical noun)تجسد is an Arabic-derived loan with the thinnest attestation in Pashto Christian usage of any language in this pipeline; a bare noun cannot be assumed to communicateNo noun-only solution exists; مانا periphrastic pairing (په غوښه راتلل + تجسد) is mandatory at every occurrence, not optional
Agapē vs. philia/eros distinctionOrdinary Pashto مینه does not lexically distinguish willed, non-reciprocal covenantal love from affectionate or honor-bound loveNo single-word fix exists; must be handled entirely through explicit teaching gloss, not vocabulary choice
Withheld-fellowship greeting signal (χαίρειν negated)Pashto has no dedicated ritual phrase for “a greeting withheld specifically on doctrinal grounds, distinct from social/kinship rupture” — the nearest social equivalent (withholding سلام) signals something far more severe and dangerousMust be handled by a bespoke, narrowly-scoped phrase invented for this passage plus a mandatory translator’s note (see §1.3, §4) rather than reused general vocabulary
”Elder” as apostolic-pastoral office marker (1:1)مشر is available and positively resonant (jirga-elder authority) but has no built-in marker distinguishing ecclesial/apostolic authority from tribal-political authorityRetain مشر but require an anchoring gloss at first use tying it to the church rather than the jirga

3. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods Requiring Fencing

Several Pashto lexical items sit inside dense Islamic or Pashtunwali semantic fields shared with terms this letter must use for distinct Christian content. Each pairing below must be actively fenced apart in Phase 2 output and reviewer training.

Term used in 2 JohnNeighboring term it must be fenced fromFencing requirement
رښتیا (truth)حقیقت (al-Ḥaqq resonance)Never substitute حقیقت; رښتیا only
حکم (commandment, 1:4-6)Shari’a حکم (legal ruling)Always qualify with “د پلار حکم”
تعلیم (teaching, 1:9-10)Madrasa/Islamic تعلیمAlways qualify with “د مسیح تعلیم”
اجر (reward, 1:8)Islamic deeds-weighing اجرAlways frame as fruit of perseverance, never basis of standing; cross-reference baseline’s فضل (grace) contrast
بد عملونه (evil works, 1:11)Islamic عمل (recorded/weighed deeds)Keep descriptive only; never merit-framework language
ضد مسیح (antichrist, 1:7)الدجال and the full Mahdi/Dajjal apocalyptic schemeNever allow bleed-through of Sunni end-times narrative; theologian review mandatory
ملګری کیدل (share in, 1:11)شریکول / شراکت (shirk-root)Extend baseline forbidden-substitution rule to this verb explicitly
ګمراه کوونکی (deceiver, 1:7)Hidayah/ḍalāl guidance frameworkAnchor strictly to denial of the incarnation; never generic “false religion”
ګرانه / ګرانې خور (honorific addresses, 1:1, 1:5)غوره کول (doctrinal election, Romans 9) / خداوند (reserved Lord title)Two separate fences: (a) chosen-lady honorific must never imply predestination doctrine; (b) “lady” (κυρία) address must never be confused with or rendered as خداوند
دنیا (world, 1:7)Islamic dunya/ākhirah dichotomyRetain moral-sphere-opposed-to-truth sense, not this-worldly/next-worldly framing
withheld-greeting phrase (1:10)سلام and its social/religious withdrawal signalNever use سلام; bespoke bounded phrase plus mandatory translator’s note

4. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions

ItemDecisionRationale
Ἰησοῦς / ΧριστόςTransliteration (established): عیسی / مسیحSettled Pashto Christian Bible-tradition forms per Romans baseline; reuse exactly
ἀντίχριστοςNeither straight transliteration nor loan-word; coined compound ضد مسیحAvoids importing الدجال’s apocalyptic scheme; keeps the term visibly anchored to مسیح rather than a free-floating transliterated technical term
ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί (incarnation content)Dual-track: retain the Arabic-derived doctrinal loan تجسد AND mandatory periphrasis په غوښه راتللA loan-only strategy is judged too thin given Pashto’s weak precedent; paraphrase-only would lose the technical doctrinal handle needed for cross-document consistency
κυρία (lady, 1:1, 1:5)Paraphrase only (ګرانې خور); no transliteration attemptedA transliterated “کوریا” would be meaningless to readers and a literal “خانمه” risks drifting toward خداوند-adjacent formality; a warm honorific paraphrase is safest
ἐκλεκτή (elect/chosen, 1:1)Paraphrase (ګرانه), explicitly not the doctrinal term غوره کولPreserves the address’s affectionate, non-doctrinal force and prevents collision with Romans 9 election teaching
χαίρειν (withheld greeting, 1:10)Contextual paraphrase, never سلام, never a literal “rejoice” gloss aloneThe Greek greeting formula has no safe Pashto lexical equivalent once its withholding is the point; must be handled entirely through a bounded, explained phrase
στόμα πρὸς στόμα (idiom, 1:12)Paraphrase to natural idiom له مخ مخLiteral “mouth to mouth” carries an inappropriate physical connotation in Pashto; meaning-for-meaning idiom substitution required per standard idiom-handling rules
πρεσβύτερος (elder, 1:1)Transliteration avoided; native term مشر usedمشر is a live, positively-resonant native word (jirga elder); no reason to prefer a loan
ἀγάπη / ἀλήθειαNative terms only (مینه / رښتیا); no transliteration consideredBoth concepts have adequate, well-established native Pashto Bible-tradition equivalents; the risk is semantic crowding (see §3), not lexical absence

5. Ranked List of Highest-Risk Ambiguities

Ranked by combined doctrinal severity and collision specificity to Pashtun Islamicate and Pashtunwali context. All Critical-tier items require mandatory human theologian review per the baseline’s escalation rules.

  1. ۲ یوحنا ۱:۷ — “coming in the flesh” / incarnation denial (Critical). The letter’s central polemic collides simultaneously with tawhid theology and mainstream Islamic Christology’s explicit prophet-only view of Isa; compounded by Pashto’s thinnest incarnational-vocabulary precedent in this pipeline. Highest-stakes single phrase in the curriculum.
  2. ۲ یوحنا ۱:۷ — “antichrist” term selection (Critical). A single wrong lexical choice (دجال) would relocate the term inside a hostile end-times narrative that itself denies the crucifixion, resurrection, and deity of Christ.
  3. ۲ یوحنا ۱:۱۰ — withheld greeting formula (Critical, safety-critical). Rendering with سلام risks a real, physically dangerous misreading for Muslim-background believers; the correct rendering must be invented and bounded specifically for this verse.
  4. ۲ یوحنا ۱:۹ — “has the Father and the Son” as binary salvation test (Critical). Any softening of either the Father’s warmth or the Son’s full, co-equal deity collapses the verse’s diagnostic force; the pairing must be preserved as an indivisible unit.
  5. ۲ یوحنا ۱:۱۰–۱۱ — receive into the house / withhold hospitality (Critical). Runs directly against the deeply held melmastia code; without explicit doctrinal framing, the command risks being read either as unthinkable (and thus ignored) or as license for a general anti-hospitality posture, both misreadings.
  6. ۲ یوحنا ۱:۹ — “goes ahead” (προάγω) (High). The Greek’s ironic sense (departure framed as false progress) is easily inverted into a positive reading in Pashto without an explicit negative qualifier.
  7. ۲ یوحنا ۱:۸ — “reward” (μισθός) (High). Sits inside the same deeds-weighing gravitational field as the baseline’s Critical cautions on salvation and imputed righteousness; must be kept strictly to “fruit,” never “basis.”
  8. ۲ یوحنا ۱:۵ — “not a new commandment… from the beginning” (Medium-High). Direct collision with the Islamic naskh (abrogation) framework; without an explicit note, “not new” could be heard as conceding that Christian teaching is itself subject to later supersession.
  9. ۲ یوحنا ۱:۱ — “elect lady” / κυρία address (Medium). Dual fencing risk: (a) possible confusion with the doctrinal election term غوره کول, implying individual predestination; (b) possible confusion of κυρία with the reserved title خداوند.
  10. ۲ یوحنا ۱:۷ — “world” (κόσμος) (Medium). Risk of flattening into the Islamic dunya/ākhirah ethical dichotomy rather than John’s morally-opposed-sphere sense; lower severity than items 1–9 since it does not directly touch Christology or safety.

  1. Add ضد مسیح (never دجال) and the withheld-greeting formula (never سلام) to the Critical Forbidden Substitutions list, extending the Romans baseline’s existing list.
  2. Extend the baseline’s fellowship forbidden-substitution rule (شراکت/شریکول) explicitly to the 2 John 1:11 verb form.
  3. Mandate periphrastic pairing (پـه غوښه راتلل + تجسد) at every incarnation-related occurrence; no noun-only rendering permitted.
  4. Require qualifier enforcement checks for حکم (“د پلار حکم”) and تعلیم (“د مسیح تعلیم”) at every occurrence — flag bare occurrences for native-speaker review per the core glossary’s enforcement note §5.
  5. Route all Critical-tier ambiguities in §5 (items 1–5) to mandatory human theologian review; route items 6–10 to at minimum native-speaker review per the baseline’s risk-tier routing convention.
  6. Carry all new terms above forward into the translation_memory.json version increment before Phase 2 segment translation begins, per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md’s Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions.
