Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis: James 1–5 (Koine Greek → Pashto)
Governing Principle
This analysis extends, and never contradicts, the baseline Romans Language Package for Pashto. Every term already fixed in translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.json (πίστις/ایمان, χάρις/فضل, δικαιοσύνη/صداقت, δικαίωσις/صادق ګڼل کیدل, σωτηρία/نجات, νόμος/ناموس, κύριος/خداوند, θεός/خدای, πατήρ/پلار, ἁμαρτία/ګناه, εἰρήνη/سوله, κοινωνία/ملګرتیا, κλητός/بلل شوی, βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ/د خدای پاچاهي, ἐκκλησία/کلیسا, etc.) is reused exactly below wherever James uses the same Greek root or the same theological concept. James introduces a substantial layer of new load-bearing vocabulary not present in Romans (ἔργα/works, πειρασμός/trial, δοκίμιον/testing, σοφία/wisdom, γλῶσσα/tongue, προσωποληψία/favoritism, ἐπιθυμία/desire, μακροθυμία/patience-in-waiting, γέεννα/Gehenna, etc.); these are analyzed fresh and proposed for addition to translation memory in Step 2/3 of the pipeline.
James is a paraenetic (exhortatory), intensely practical letter, addressed to a scattered, tested community (1:1, διασπορά). Its central theological tension for this destination language is the apparent collision between James’s “faith without works is dead” (2:17, 26) and Paul’s “justified by faith apart from works” (Romans 3:28, already Critical-risk in the baseline) — a collision that, left unresolved, risks confirming rather than correcting the Islamic deeds-weighing (mizan) framework the baseline repeatedly warns against. This tension is flagged at every relevant verse below and must be carried into doctrine analysis (Step 2) as the single highest-stakes translation decision in this curriculum.
PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: James 2:14–26 (Verse-by-Verse)
James 2:14
Greek: τί τὸ ὄφελος, ἀδελφοί μου, ἐὰν πίστιν λέγῃ τις ἔχειν, ἔργα δὲ μὴ ἔχῃ; μὴ δύναται ἡ πίστις σῶσαι αὐτόν;
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| benefit/good | ὄφελος | ophelos | ”profit, advantage” | practical use-value; what something accomplishes | ”good,” “profit,” “use” | Opens a rhetorical diatribe: claimed faith that produces nothing is being questioned on its practical fruit, not denied as a category | ګټه (gata, “benefit/profit”) | Low |
| brothers | ἀδελφοί | adelphoi | ”male siblings” (vocative, inclusive) | direct familial address to the whole community | ”brothers,” “brothers and sisters” | Reinforces house-church intimacy; James writes as family, not tribunal | وروڼه (wrune) | Low |
| faith | πίστις | pistis | ”trust, belief, fidelity” | (1) intellectual assent (2) personal trust/reliance (3) fidelity/faithfulness | ”faith,” “belief,” “trust” | REUSE baseline — the very faith under discussion is the same trust-in-Christ category as Romans, not a different “faith” | ایمان (established) | High (per baseline) |
| works | ἔργα | erga | ”deeds, actions, accomplishments” | any produced action; can be neutral (labor), moral (good/evil deeds), or covenantal (Torah observance) | “works,” “deeds,” “actions” | James’s “works” = concrete acts of obedient love flowing from genuine faith (see 2:15-16), not merit earned before God. New term, no baseline entry | کارونه (karona, native “works/deeds”) | Critical — see note below |
| save | σῶσαι (< σῴζω) | sōsai | ”to rescue, deliver, heal” | physical rescue; ultimate eschatological deliverance | ”save,” “rescue,” “deliver” | Same root as established نجات (salvation, Critical baseline). Question is rhetorical: mere profession-without-fruit cannot deliver | نجات ورکول / نجات کول | Critical (reuse) |
Critical Note on “works” (ἔργα): Pashto readers share, via regional Sunni Islamic culture, a deeds-weighing (mīzān) soteriology in which a’māl (اعمال) are literally weighed on the Day of Judgment (Qur’an 101:6-9) as the basis of salvation. If “works” is rendered with the loaded Arabic-Islamic term اعمال, “faith without works is dead” risks being heard as confirmation of exactly the works-salvation framework Romans 3-4 and the baseline’s Critical-risk imputed_righteousness entry were built to correct. This analysis recommends the native Pashto کارونه (karona) rather than اعمال, precisely as the baseline preferred native ملګرتیا over Arabic-rooted شراکت for “fellowship.” The doctrinal content (James’s works are the evidence and fruit of a living faith already granted by grace, not its precondition) must be taught explicitly at every occurrence — this is the single most important harmonization task for the whole curriculum.
James 2:15
Greek: ἐὰν ἀδελφὸς ἢ ἀδελφὴ γυμνοὶ ὑπάρχωσιν καὶ λειπόμενοι τῆς ἐφημέρου τροφῆς
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| brother/sister | ἀδελφός/ἀδελφή | adelphos/adelphē | sibling, male/female | fellow believer, not only blood kin | ”brother,” “sister” | Explicitly names a sister — the poor believer is a full member of the household of faith regardless of gender | ورور/خور | Low |
| poorly clothed | γυμνοί | gymnoi | ”naked, stripped, inadequately clothed” | literal nakedness or (as here) severe lack of adequate clothing | ”poorly clothed,” “naked,” “in rags” | Concrete material need, not metaphorical spiritual nakedness | بې کالی / کم کالي لرونکی | Low |
| daily food | ἐφήμερος τροφή | ephēmeros trophē | ”food for the day” | subsistence-level daily provision | ”daily food,” “daily bread” | Echoes “give us this day our daily bread” register; the test case is basic subsistence, the most acute form of poverty | ورځنی خوراک | Low |
James 2:16
Greek: εἴπῃ δέ τις αὐτοῖς ἐξ ὑμῶν· ὑπάγετε ἐν εἰρήνῃ, θερμαίνεσθε καὶ χορτάζεσθε, μὴ δῶτε δὲ αὐτοῖς τὰ ἐπιτήδεια τοῦ σώματος, τί τὸ ὄφελος;
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| go in peace | ὑπάγετε ἐν εἰρήνῃ | hypagete en eirēnē | ”depart in peace” | a conventional dismissal/blessing formula (cf. synagogue benediction) | “go in peace,” “go well” | REUSE established سوله (peace, baseline Medium). Here it exposes empty religious-sounding speech detached from action — a warning against pious words substituting for love | په سوله لاړ شئ | Medium (reuse سوله) |
| be warmed and filled | θερμαίνεσθε καὶ χορτάζεσθε | thermainesthe kai chortazesthe | ”warm yourselves and be filled” | physical comfort verbs | ”be warmed and filled,” “keep warm and eat well” | Emphasizes the hollowness of verbal blessing without material provision | تاسو ګرم شئ او مړه شئ | Low |
| things needed for the body | τὰ ἐπιτήδεια τοῦ σώματος | ta epitēdeia tou sōmatos | ”the necessities of the body” | practical bodily provision | ”bodily needs,” “necessities” | Grounds the whole illustration: real faith meets real material need | د بدن اړتیاوې | Low |
James 2:17
Greek: οὕτως καὶ ἡ πίστις, ἐὰν μὴ ἔχῃ ἔργα, νεκρά ἐστιν καθ’ ἑαυτήν.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| by itself/alone | καθ’ ἑαυτήν | kath’ heautēn | ”by itself,” “in itself” | isolated, unaccompanied | ”by itself,” “alone,” “in isolation” | Faith considered in complete isolation from any resulting action — not “faith as the means of salvation” (Paul’s sense) but “professed faith with zero observable fruit” | په خپل ځان کې / یوازې | High |
| dead | νεκρά (< νεκρός) | nekra | ”dead, lifeless” | literal corpse; metaphorical: inert, without life-force | ”dead,” “lifeless,” “barren” | The thesis statement of the passage. Critical harmonization point: this “dead faith” is not true, Spirit-given saving faith (Romans 8) failing to save; it is a counterfeit, merely notional faith that never was living trust | مړه (mara) | Critical |
Critical Doctrinal Flag: 2:17 is the verse most likely to be quoted in isolation to argue James contradicts Paul. Any teaching material accompanying the translation must state plainly: James does not say faith plus works saves; he says a “faith” that produces no works was never living faith at all (cf. 2:26’s body/spirit analogy). This must be reinforced in the doctrine analysis, not left to translator discretion.
James 2:18
Greek: ἀλλ’ ἐρεῖ τις· σὺ πίστιν ἔχεις κἀγὼ ἔργα ἔχω· δεῖξόν μοι τὴν πίστιν σου χωρὶς τῶν ἔργων, κἀγὼ σοι δείξω ἐκ τῶν ἔργων μου τὴν πίστιν.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| show me | δεῖξόν μοι | deixon moi | ”demonstrate to me,” “prove to me” | evidentiary demonstration | ”show me,” “demonstrate,” “prove” | Works function as evidence, not cause, of faith — an important distinction for the honor-shame culture’s evidence-of-character expectations | ما ته وښایه | Medium |
| apart from | χωρίς | chōris | ”without, separated from” | separation, absence of accompaniment | ”apart from,” “without,” “separate from” | Sets up the impossibility: faith cannot even be displayed apart from works, because works are its visible fruit, not an optional add-on | پرته / بې (له) | High |
| by/from | ἐκ | ek | ”out of, from, by means of” | source or origin | ”by,” “from,” “out of” | Marks works as the outflow of faith, the channel through which invisible trust becomes visible | له / د…له لارې | Medium |
James 2:19
Greek: σὺ πιστεύεις ὅτι εἷς θεός ἐστιν, καλῶς ποιεῖς· καὶ τὰ δαιμόνια πιστεύουσιν καὶ φρίσσουσιν.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| you believe God is one | πιστεύεις ὅτι εἷς θεός ἐστιν | pisteueis hoti heis theos estin | ”you believe that God is one” | a direct echo of the Shema (Deut 6:4) | “you believe God is one,” “you affirm monotheism” | Critical apologetic pressure point. This is functionally identical in form to the Islamic shahada’s core content (“There is no god but God”). James’s argument is that bare monotheistic assent, even if entirely correct, is not saving faith | ایمان لرئ چې خدای یو دی | Critical |
| demons believe and shudder | τὰ δαιμόνια πιστεύουσιν καὶ φρίσσουσιν | ta daimonia pisteuousin kai phrissousin | ”the demons believe and bristle/tremble with horror” | φρίσσω: hair standing on end from dread | ”demons believe and tremble,” “demons believe and shudder” | The rhetorical climax: correct doctrinal content held even by demons proves doctrinal correctness ≠ saving faith. This directly, respectfully, but unmistakably challenges any framework (Islamic or nominal-Christian) that equates verbal creedal confession with right standing before God | جنونه ایمان لري او رېږدي | High |
Note: ﻑریسو (φρίσσω, “shudder/tremble in dread”) → رېږدل (regdal). Low term-level risk; the doctrinal weight sits entirely in the surrounding argument, flagged High above.
James 2:20
Greek: θέλεις δὲ γνῶναι, ὦ ἄνθρωπε κενέ, ὅτι ἡ πίστις χωρὶς τῶν ἔργων ἀργή ἐστιν;
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| foolish/empty person | ἄνθρωπε κενέ | anthrōpe kene | ”O empty/hollow man” | κενός: void, without content, futile | ”you foolish person,” “you empty-headed one” | Direct diatribe address; sharply rhetorical but not insulting in the sense of dishonoring — a rabbinic-style argumentative device | ای بېعقله انسانه | Medium |
| useless | ἀργή (< ἀργός) | argē | ”idle, unproductive, inactive” — literally “without ergon (work)“ | inactive, non-functioning, barren | ”useless,” “barren,” “unproductive,” “dead” (synonym pickup from v.17,26) | A wordplay in Greek (ἀ-εργός, “without-work”) largely untranslatable directly into Pashto; must be rendered by sense (useless/unproductive) rather than attempting the pun | بې ګټې / ناکاره | Medium |
James 2:21
Greek: Ἀβραὰμ ὁ πατὴρ ἡμῶν οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων ἐδικαιώθη, ἀνενέγκας Ἰσαὰκ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον;
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Abraham our father | Ἀβραὰμ ὁ πατὴρ ἡμῶν | Abraam ho patēr hēmōn | ”Abraham the father of us” | shared covenantal ancestor | ”Abraham our father,” “our forefather Abraham” | Shared, positively-regarded Quranic patriarch (Ibrahim); James assumes this shared reverence to make his argument land | ابراهیم زموږ پلار | High |
| was justified | ἐδικαιώθη (< δικαιόω) | edikaiōthē | ”was declared/shown righteous, was vindicated” | (1) forensic declaration of right standing (Paul’s dominant sense) (2) demonstrative vindication by evidence (James’s sense here) | “was justified,” “was shown righteous,” “was vindicated” | CRITICAL — the central doctrinal-harmonization term of the entire curriculum. James uses the same verb Paul uses for the forensic declaration (Romans 4, quoting the same Genesis 15:6 text James quotes in 2:23!) but in a demonstrative/evidentiary sense: Abraham’s obedient offering of Isaac vindicated/displayed a righteousness already credited to him by faith decades earlier (Genesis 15). Must reuse the baseline’s established صادق ګڼل کیدل exactly, but require an explanatory note at every James 2 occurrence distinguishing “James’s vindication-before-others/before-evidence sense” from “Paul’s initial forensic-declaration sense,” so the two do not read as contradictory | صادق ګڼل کیدل (reuse — with mandatory harmonizing note) | Critical |
| offered up | ἀνενέγκας (< ἀναφέρω) | anenegkas | ”having carried up, having offered (as sacrifice)“ | technical sacrificial-offering vocabulary | ”offered up,” “offered as a sacrifice” | Refers to the binding of Isaac (Genesis 22); shared narrative with the Quranic account of Ibrahim’s near-sacrifice of his son (Qur’an 37:100-107, though the Quranic tradition is ambiguous/disputed as to whether the son is Isaac or Ishmael) — a real point of cultural resonance requiring careful, respectful handling, not avoidance | وړاندې کول (قربانۍ) | High |
| altar | θυσιαστήριον | thysiastērion | ”place of sacrifice” | the physical structure for offering sacrifice | ”altar” | Concrete OT cultic term; low independent risk, needs no correction, only comprehension support for readers unfamiliar with OT sacrificial system | قربانګاه | Low |
James 2:22
Greek: βλέπεις ὅτι ἡ πίστις συνήργει τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἔργων ἡ πίστις ἐτελειώθη
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| worked together with | συνήργει (< συνεργέω) | synērgei | ”worked together, cooperated” | joint operation, cooperative activity | ”worked together with,” “was active along with” | Faith and works are presented as inseparable co-operating realities in a single life, not as two competing paths to righteousness | فعاله وه (سره یو ځای) | High |
| was completed/perfected | ἐτελειώθη (< τελειόω) | eteleiōthē | ”was brought to completion, was made perfect/mature” | same root family as τέλειος (1:4, “perfect/complete/mature”) | “was completed,” “was perfected,” “was brought to maturity” | Works do not create faith but bring it to its intended mature, visible completeness — connects directly to the τέλειος thread running through James 1 | بشپړه شوه | High |
James 2:23
Greek: καὶ ἐπληρώθη ἡ γραφὴ ἡ λέγουσα· ἐπίστευσεν δὲ Ἀβραὰμ τῷ θεῷ, καὶ ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην, καὶ φίλος θεοῦ ἐκλήθη.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scripture was fulfilled | ἐπληρώθη ἡ γραφή | eplērōthē hē graphē | ”the Scripture was filled up/completed” | prophetic-textual fulfillment formula | ”Scripture was fulfilled,” “the Scripture came true” | Same fulfillment vocabulary family flagged in the baseline’s fulfillment_of_prophecy doctrine (High risk re: naskh/abrogation default) | لیکنه پوره شوه | High (reuse doctrine) |
| believed… credited to him as righteousness | ἐπίστευσεν… ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην | episteusen… elogisthē autō eis dikaiosynēn | ”believed… it was reckoned/credited to him unto righteousness” | accounting/ledger metaphor: a credit entered to one’s account, not wages earned | ”credited as righteousness,” “reckoned to him as righteousness” | Identical Greek clause to Romans 4:3, already fixed in baseline as imputed_righteousness → محسوبه شوی صداقت, Critical, with the explicit rejection of لاسته راوړی صداقت (“earned righteousness”). MUST reuse exactly. This is the strongest textual proof that James 2 and Romans 4 draw on the same Genesis 15:6 event to make compatible, not contradictory, points | ایمان راوړ… او دا ورته د صداقت په توګه محسوبه شوه (reuse محسوبه شوی صداقت) | Critical |
| friend of God | φίλος θεοῦ | philos theou | ”friend of God” | intimate relational title, not a formal office | ”friend of God,” “God’s friend” | Strong positive cultural bridge: Abraham/Ibrahim is already called Khalil Allah (“Friend/Intimate of God”) in Islamic tradition (Qur’an 4:125) — a rare case of near-verbatim shared title. Reuse established ملګرتیا root for resonance with baseline’s “fellowship” term. Must clarify the friendship flows from faith credited as righteousness (per this very verse), not from Abraham’s own merit as understood in the Islamic khalil-tradition | د خدای ملګری | High |
James 2:24
Greek: ὁρᾶτε ὅτι ἐξ ἔργων δικαιοῦται ἄνθρωπος καὶ οὐκ ἐκ πίστεως μόνον.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| is justified | δικαιοῦται (< δικαιόω) | dikaioutai | present tense, “is being shown/vindicated righteous” | see 2:21 note | ”is justified,” “is shown righteous” | Same Critical harmonization requirement as 2:21 — reuse صادق ګڼل کیدل with mandatory explanatory framing | صادق ګڼل کیدل (reuse) | Critical |
| by works | ἐξ ἔργων | ex ergōn | ”out of/from works” | source-marking preposition + noun | ”by works,” “from works” | The verse most susceptible to a decontextualized “James contradicts Paul” reading if translated and taught in isolation from 2:14-23 and 2:26 | له کارونو | Critical |
| by faith alone | ἐκ πίστεως μόνον | ek pisteōs monon | ”from faith only” | note: this is the only occurrence of the phrase “faith alone” (πίστις μόνον) in the entire NT, and James denies it in this specific sense (a bare, fruitless, unaccompanied claim to believe) | “by faith alone,” “from faith only” | James is not opposing Paul’s sola fide (justification’s ground) but a caricature of faith that produces zero fruit. This distinction is essential and must be carried into every teaching note accompanying this verse | یوازې له ایمان (سره) | Critical |
James 2:25
Greek: ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ Ῥαὰβ ἡ πόρνη οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων ἐδικαιώθη, ὑποδεξαμένη τοὺς ἀγγέλους καὶ ἑτέρᾳ ὁδῷ ἐκβαλοῦσα;
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rahab the prostitute | Ῥαὰβ ἡ πόρνη | Rhaab hē pornē | ”Rahab, the prostitute” | πόρνη: one who sells sexual services | ”Rahab the prostitute,” “Rahab the harlot” | A second witness alongside the honored patriarch Abraham — deliberately pairing the most honored figure with one of the least honorable social status, undercutting any status-based (tribal/honor) reading of who can be vindicated by faith-produced action. Requires careful pastoral framing given honor-shame sensitivities around discussing sexual sin/status openly | راحاب فاحشه | High (pastoral sensitivity; term itself Low) |
| received | ὑποδεξαμένη (< ὑποδέχομαι) | hypodexamenē | ”welcomed, received as a guest” | hospitality-reception vocabulary | ”received,” “welcomed,” “took in” | Genuine positive bridge: hospitality to strangers under threat is a core Pashtunwali value (melmastia, and especially nanawatai-adjacent protection of those seeking refuge) — Rahab’s action of sheltering the spies resonates strongly with this cultural script | ننداره یې وکړه / یې کوربتوب وکړ | Medium (positive) |
| messengers/spies | ἀγγέλους (here = “messengers/spies,” not “angels”) | angelous | ”messengers, envoys” (context: the Israelite spies, Joshua 2) | ἄγγελος normally = “angel” elsewhere in NT; here it means human envoys | ”messengers,” “spies,” “envoys” | Translators must not default to “angels” (فرشتې) — context requires “human messengers/spies” (استخباراتي استازي or ډلمشران), avoiding an unintended supernatural reading | استازي / سترګباڼان (spies) | Medium |
James 2:26
Greek: ὥσπερ γὰρ τὸ σῶμα χωρὶς πνεύματος νεκρόν ἐστιν, οὕτως καὶ ἡ πίστις χωρὶς [τῶν] ἔργων νεκρά ἐστιν.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| body without spirit | σῶμα χωρὶς πνεύματος | sōma chōris pneumatos | ”body apart from spirit/breath” | πνεῦμα here likely = “breath/life-force” not the Holy Spirit specifically | ”body without spirit,” “body without breath” | The summary analogy of the whole passage: just as a corpse looks like a body but has no life, a fruitless profession looks like faith but has none of faith’s living reality | بدن پرته له روح | High |
| faith without works is dead | ἡ πίστις χωρὶς ἔργων νεκρά ἐστιν | hē pistis chōris ergōn nekra estin | (repeats 2:17 verbatim in sense) | — | “faith without works is dead” | Closes the passage with the same thesis as 2:17, forming a tight inclusio. This is the verse most likely to be memorized/quoted standalone in teaching — the harmonizing note (faith that produces no works was never living faith) must travel with it every time it is cited apart from its context | ایمان پرته له کارونو مړه دی | Critical |
PART 2 — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE WHOLE BOOK
Chapter 1 — Greeting, Trials, Wisdom, Hearing and Doing, Pure Religion
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| servant (of God) | δοῦλος (θεοῦ) | doulos (theou) | “slave, bondservant” | total, willing submission to a master; the standard NT self-designation for ministry leaders | ”servant,” “slave,” “bondservant” | Positive bridge: parallels the common Islamic personal-name convention Abdullah (“servant/slave of God”); James’s self-humbling opening models the servant posture the letter commends throughout | غلام (د خدای) | Medium |
| the Dispersion | διασπορά | diaspora | ”scattering, dispersion” | Jews scattered outside the Holy Land; by extension, believers scattered among the nations | ”the Dispersion,” “scattered among the nations,” “the Diaspora” | Strong contemporary resonance: today’s Pashto-speaking house-church readership is itself scattered and often secret, echoing the letter’s original addressees — connects directly to baseline’s Critical church_as_gods_people doctrine note on dispersed, persecuted community | شاتیت شوی/خواره شوی قوم | Medium (positive resonance) |
| trial | πειρασμός | peirasmos | ”test, trial” — same word-family used for “temptation to sin” later in the chapter (1:13-14) | (1) external, faith-refining hardship (1:2-12, positive purpose) (2) internal enticement to sin (1:13-15, negative) | “trials,” “temptations,” “testing” | James uses one Greek word-family for both senses; Pashto requires two distinct renderings to avoid confusing external hardship (which God permits for growth) with a lure to sin (which James insists does not come from God, 1:13) | ازموینه (trial, 1:2-12) / وسوسه (temptation-to-sin, 1:13-14) | High |
| testing/proving | δοκίμιον | dokimion | ”the process/means of testing genuineness” (metallurgical refining imagery) | proving something authentic through fire/pressure | ”testing,” “the proving of,” “genuineness” | Distinguishes the outcome (steadfastness, ὑπομονή) from the trial itself (πειρασμός); best rendered contextually alongside ازموینه rather than as a separate lexical item | ازموینه (context-combined with πειρασμός) | Medium |
| steadfastness/endurance | ὑπομονή | hypomonē | ”remaining under,” patient endurance | active perseverance under pressure, not passive resignation | ”endurance,” “perseverance,” “steadfastness,” “patience” | Distinguished from μακροθυμία (ch.5, patient waiting for others/for the Lord’s coming) — ὑπομονή is endurance under trial | زغم (zgham) | High |
| perfect/complete/mature | τέλειος | teleios | ”complete, whole, mature” | moral/spiritual maturity, not sinless perfection | ”perfect,” “complete,” “mature,” “full-grown” | Recurs at 1:17, 1:25, 3:2; must be rendered consistently to preserve the thread. Explicitly not “flawless performance” | بشپړ (bashpar) | Medium |
| doubting | διακρίνομαι | diakrinomai | ”to be divided in judgment, to waver” | uncertainty, internal division of mind | ”doubting,” “wavering” | The doubter’s prayer described as ineffective; connects to δίψυχος below | شک کول | Medium |
| double-minded | δίψυχος | dipsychos | literally “two-souled” | inner division of loyalty/allegiance | ”double-minded,” “two-souled,” “wavering” | Recurs 4:8. Genuine cultural bridge: Pashtunwali’s demand for undivided loyalty (nang) makes “double-heartedness” a recognizable form of dishonor, useful for teaching wholehearted trust in God | دوه‑زړی (dwa-zRy) | Medium |
| Father of lights | πατὴρ τῶν φώτων | patēr tōn phōtōn | ”Father of the lights [heavenly bodies]“ | God as the unchanging source and giver of all light/good, contrasted with shifting shadows | ”Father of lights,” “Father of the heavenly lights” | Combines two flagged elements: established Critical-risk پلار (Father) plus light/glory-adjacent imagery; must be taught as relational generosity, not distant cosmological title | د رڼاګانو پلار | High (reuse پلار) |
| good gift / perfect gift | δόσις ἀγαθὴ / δώρημα τέλειον | dosis agathē / dōrēma teleion | ”a good giving” / “a complete/perfect gift” | generous, complete divine giving | ”good gift,” “perfect gift” | Distinct Greek root from χάρις (grace); still must avoid melmastia’s reciprocity-creating gift-logic already flagged for فضل in the baseline | ښه ورکړه / بشپړه ورکړه | Medium |
| word of truth / implanted word | λόγος ἀληθείας / ἔμφυτος λόγος | logos alētheias / emphytos logos | ”word of truth” / “in-planted/rooted word” | the gospel message as a life-giving seed planted within | ”word of truth,” “implanted word,” “word rooted in you” | κلام (kalam) carries heavy Islamic ilm al-kalam (scholastic theology) resonance and Qur’anic “Kalam Allah” associations; must be clarified as God’s life-giving gospel message, not a technical theological-discourse category or a claim about a separate revealed text | د حقیقت کلام / ریښه شوی کلام | High |
| doer of the word / hearer only | ποιητὴς λόγου / ἀκροατής | poiētēs logou / akroatēs | ”doer of the word” / “a hearer” | active practice vs. passive reception | ”doer of the word,” “hearer only” | Directly anticipates the Faith-and-Works argument of chapter 2; must be rendered so the doer/hearer contrast is recognizably the same theme as 2:14-26 | د کلام کوونکی / يوازې اوریدونکی | Medium |
| law of liberty / perfect law | νόμος τέλειος τῆς ἐλευθερίας | nomos teleios tēs eleutherias | ”the perfect law, the [law] of freedom” | the moral/ethical teaching of Christ, summarized in love, that liberates rather than condemns | ”law of liberty,” “perfect law of freedom” | REUSE established Critical-risk ناموس. Must add explanatory note: this is neither Mosaic law, nor shari’a, nor Pashtunwali customary law, but the liberating ethical teaching of Christ fulfilled in love (cf. 2:8) — a different referent from Romans’ νόμος discussions, which must not be flattened into it | د ازادۍ ناموس (reuse ناموس) | Critical |
| religion | θρησκεία | thrēskeia | ”religious practice, cultic observance” | outward religious observance/worship practice | ”religion,” “religious practice,” “worship” | دین (din) carries the full weight of Islam’s own self-designation as a total way of life; using it here is a deliberate, high-value but high-risk move — it forces “what counts as true din” to be redefined around caring for the vulnerable and moral purity, which can be leveraged pastorally but must never be taught as “good deeds define true religion apart from faith in Christ” | دین (with mandatory clarifying note) | High |
| orphans and widows | ὀρφανοὺς καὶ χήρας | orphanous kai chēras | ”orphans and widows” | the paradigmatic vulnerable/dependent members of ancient society | ”orphans and widows” | Low collision risk; concrete social-ethics term, positively resonant with both biblical and regional customary charity expectations | یتیمان او کونډې | Low |
| unstained from the world | ἄσπιλος ἀπὸ τοῦ κόσμου | aspilos apo tou kosmou | ”unspotted/unstained from the world” | moral purity maintained amid worldly corruption | ”unstained by the world,” “keep oneself pure from the world” | Introduces the κόσμος (world) theme developed fully in ch. 4; see that entry | له نړۍ نه ناپاک نه شوی | Medium |
Chapter 2 (vv. 1–13) — Favoritism and the Poor, the Royal Law
(vv. 14-26, the core passage, are treated in full above.)
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| favoritism | προσωποληψία | prosōpolēpsia | literally “face-receiving/face-taking” | judging or treating people differently based on external status/appearance | ”favoritism,” “partiality,” “showing favor” | Directly opposed to Pashtunwali’s honor-status hierarchy, in which deference to the wealthy/honorable guest (melmastia) is customary etiquette; James makes such deference to status, when it demeans the poor, a sin against “the Lord of glory” (2:1) | جانبداري | High |
| assembly/synagogue | συναγωγή | synagōgē | ”synagogue,” “gathering place” | reflects the very early Jewish-Christian setting, where believers still called their meeting a “synagogue" | "assembly,” “meeting,” “synagogue,” “gathering” | Distinct from established کلیسا (technical church doctrine term). Rendering literally risks implying a directive toward the Jewish institution; render descriptively as “your gathering/assembly” and flag the historical background explicitly, so as not to be confused with, or contradict, the باسиline کلیسا doctrine | غونډ (ghund, “assembly/gathering”) | Medium |
| poor | πτωχός | ptōchos | ”poor, destitute, beggarly” | economic and social lowliness | ”poor,” “the poor,” “destitute” | Foundational to the whole doctrine “Favoritism and the Poor”; God’s special regard for the poor (2:5) counters the honor-hierarchy default | غریب / مسکین | Medium |
| rich | πλούσιος | plousios | ”rich, wealthy” | economic prosperity, often morally suspect in James (cf. ch.5) | “rich,” “the wealthy” | Consistently placed in tension with genuine faith throughout James (1:10-11; 2:6-7; 5:1-6) | شتمن | Low |
| royal law | νόμος βασιλικός | nomos basilikos | ”kingly/royal law” | the law of love for neighbor, summarized as supreme/sovereign over other legal claims | ”royal law,” “the king’s law” | REUSE ناموس (Critical) + established پاچاهي root (from kingdom_of_god, د خدای پاچاهي); combination requires the same “not shari’a, not Pashtunwali” clarifying note as law of liberty above | د پاچاهي ناموس | Critical |
| love your neighbor | ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου | agapēseis ton plēsion sou | ”you shall love your neighbor” | quotation of Leviticus 19:18, foundational OT ethic | ”love your neighbor as yourself” | The substance of the “royal law”; must be rendered consistently with any future Gospels/Leviticus material in this pipeline | ګاونډی/ نژدی دې ته مینه کوه | Medium |
| mercy | ἔλεος | eleos | ”mercy, compassion shown to the needy” | compassionate action toward those in a position of need | ”mercy,” “compassion” | 2:13 “judgment without mercy… mercy triumphs over judgment” — ties directly to the poor/favoritism doctrine and anticipates the works-of-mercy argument in 2:14-26 | رحم / مهربانۍ | Medium |
Chapter 3 — Taming the Tongue, Wisdom from Above
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| teacher | διδάσκαλος | didaskalos | ”teacher, instructor” | one who authoritatively instructs others in the community | ”teacher,” “instructor” | 3:1 warns of stricter judgment for teachers — relevant given how ministry/teaching roles are exercised (often informally, in secret) in persecuted house-churches | ښوونکی | Low |
| tongue | γλῶσσα | glōssa | ”tongue” (organ of speech) | metonym for speech itself, its power for both blessing and destruction | ”tongue,” “speech” | High-stakes doctrine, not just term: in a culture where speech (gossip, insult, accusation) can trigger honor-based retaliation and even blood feud (badal), James’s warning that the tongue can “set the whole course of life on fire” (3:6) carries acute, real-world danger, not merely rhetorical force | ژبه | High (doctrine-level; term itself Low) |
| set on fire by Gehenna | φλογιζομένη ὑπὸ τῆς γεέννης | phlogizomenē hypo tēs geennēs | ”set aflame by Gehenna [hell]“ | γέεννα: the Valley of Hinnom, standard NT term for the place/state of final judgment/fire | ”set on fire by hell,” “set aflame by Gehenna” | جهنم (jahannam) is the shared Islamic-Arabic eschatological term for hell, broadly compatible in basic content (place of fiery divine judgment) but must not import the developed Islamic doctrine of hell’s tiered punishments; the point here is purely that the tongue’s corrupting power has an ultimately infernal, not divine, source | د جهنم اور یې بلوي | Medium |
| tame | δαμάζω | damazō | ”to tame, subdue, domesticate” | control of a wild animal, applied metaphorically to the untameable tongue | ”tame,” “subdue,” “control” | 3:7-8 explicitly says the tongue “no human being can tame” — a sobering admission requiring the Spirit’s work, not self-discipline alone, connecting to the sanctification doctrine (تقدیس) | زبات کول / منزه کول | Medium |
| likeness of God | καθ’ ὁμοίωσιν θεοῦ | kath’ homoiōsin theou | ”according to the likeness of God” | humanity’s creation in God’s image/likeness (Genesis 1:26) | “the likeness of God,” “made in God’s likeness” | Tawhid theology resists any suggestion of resemblance between humans and God; must be explained as moral/relational representation (why cursing another human is a grave wrong), not physical or ontological equivalence with God | د خدای مثال / شان | High |
| wisdom from above | ἡ ἄνωθεν σοφία | hē anōthen sophia | ”the wisdom from above” | heavenly-sourced wisdom, contrasted with earthly wisdom | ”wisdom from above,” “heavenly wisdom” | REUSE established حکمت framing (positive Islamic-wisdom-literature resonance) but must be anchored to the specific fruit named in 3:17 (pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, sincere) | له پاسه حکمت | Medium |
| earthly, unspiritual, demonic [wisdom] | ἐπίγειος, ψυχική, δαιμονιώδης | epigeios, psychikē, daimoniōdēs | ”earthly,” “soul-ish/natural,” “demon-like” | wisdom whose source is merely human nature or actively demonic, producing jealousy/strife | ”earthly, unspiritual, demonic” | شیطاني (shaytani) for δαιμονιώδης is a strong, resonant, largely positive-risk bridge given the shared devil-figure tradition; must connect clearly to the visible fruit (jealousy, selfish ambition, disorder) rather than occult/folk-magic associations specifically | ځمکنی، نفسي، شیطاني (حکمت) | Medium |
| peacemakers / fruit of righteousness | εἰρηνοποιοῦντες / καρπὸς δικαιοσύνης | eirēnopoiountes / karpos dikaiosynēs | ”those who make peace” / “fruit of righteousness” | closing benediction of the chapter | ”peacemakers,” “fruit of righteousness” | REUSE established سوله and صداقت exactly for full consistency with baseline | د سولې پیدا کوونکي / د صداقت مېوه | Medium (reuse) |
Chapter 4 — Worldliness versus Friendship with God, Submission and Humility
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| desires/passions | ἐπιθυμία | epithymia | ”strong desire, craving, lust” | can be neutral (desire) but consistently negative in James’s usage — the internal source of conflict and sin | ”desires,” “passions,” “cravings,” “lusts” | Genuine cultural/ethical bridge: Islamic ethics already frames restraining base desire (hawas/nafs) as central to piety; must be anchored to James’s specific remedy — submission and drawing near to God (4:7-8), not self-discipline/tariqa-style nafs-subjugation alone | هوس (hawas) | High |
| wars and fights among you | πόλεμοι καὶ μάχαι | polemoi kai machai | ”wars and battles/quarrels” | metaphorical for interpersonal community conflict, rooted in unmet desire | ”quarrels and conflicts,” “wars and fightings” | Concrete, low-risk term; theological weight carried by ἐπιθυμία above | جنګونه او شخړې | Low |
| spiritual adultery | μοιχαλίδες | moichalides | ”adulteresses” | OT-prophetic metaphor (cf. Hosea) for covenant unfaithfulness to God through worldly idolatry | ”adulteresses,” “unfaithful ones,” “spiritual adultery” | CRITICAL: زنا (zina) is not only religiously loaded but carries severe, sometimes lethal, real-world legal and honor-code consequences (including honor-killing risk) in Pashtun society when applied to actual persons. Its use here is entirely metaphorical (covenant unfaithfulness to God), but if decontextualized it risks being read as a literal accusation with dangerous social consequences. Must be taught with explicit, careful framing as OT-prophetic covenant-idiom, never as literal accusation | مو (روحاني) زنا کوونکې (mandatory explanatory framing) | Critical |
| friendship with the world = enmity with God | ἡ φιλία τοῦ κόσμου ἔχθρα τοῦ θεοῦ ἐστιν | hē philia tou kosmou echthra tou theou estin | ”the friendship of the world is enmity of/toward God” | φιλία: warm relational alliance, here applied negatively | ”friendship with the world is enmity with God” | REUSE ملګرتیا root (baseline fellowship, Low risk in its normal sense) but stretched here to a negative alliance; must be clearly disambiguated so readers do not confuse this negative “friendship with the world” with the positive doctrine of Christian fellowship elsewhere in the curriculum | د نړۍ سره ملګرتیا د خدای سره دوښمني ده | High |
| grace | χάρις | charis | ”grace, favor” | quotation of Proverbs 3:34, “God gives grace to the humble" | "grace” | REUSE established فضل exactly (baseline Critical/High) | فضل (reuse) | High (reuse) |
| submit to God | ὑποτάγητε τῷ θεῷ | hypotagēte tō theō | ”be subjected/submit to God” | voluntary yielding to God’s authority | ”submit to God,” “yield to God” | تابع/تسلیم carries the full weight of Islam’s own root meaning (“submission”); must be distinguished from generic total-submission religious performance and tied to this specific context — resisting the devil, drawing near in relationship — per the baseline’s obedience_of_faith doctrine note on competing submission categories | خدای ته تابع شئ | High |
| resist the devil | ἀντίστητε τῷ διαβόλῳ | antistēte tō diabolō | ”stand against/resist the devil” | active spiritual resistance | ”resist the devil,” “stand firm against the devil” | Shared devil-figure vocabulary (Shaytan/Iblis) is a genuine cultural asset here, low collision risk | د شیطان مقابله وکړئ | Medium |
| draw near to God | ἐγγίσατε τῷ θεῷ | eggisate tō theō | ”come near/approach God” | relational nearness, reciprocal (“he will draw near to you”) | “draw near to God,” “come close to God” | Emphasizes intimacy that must counterbalance the “submission” language above — relational, not merely hierarchical | خدای ته نږدې شئ | Medium |
| purify your hearts | ἁγνίσατε τὰς καρδίας | hagnisate tas kardias | ”cleanse/purify [your] hearts” | moral-repentance cleansing, distinct Greek root from ἁγιάζω (sanctify) | “purify your hearts,” “cleanse your hearts” | Distinct from the technical sanctification doctrine term تقدیس (which must remain reserved for ἁγιασμός); this everyday repentance-call may use پاکول, but a translator note must flag that this is NOT a second rendering of the sanctification doctrine, to prevent confusing the two unrelated Greek terms | زړونه پاک کړئ | Medium |
| double-minded | δίψυχοι | dipsychoi | see ch.1 note | — | “double-minded” | REUSE دوه‑زړی established above | دوه‑زړی (reuse) | Medium |
| humble yourselves | ταπεινώθητε | tapeinōthēte | ”be humbled, humble yourselves” | voluntary self-lowering before God | ”humble yourselves” | تواضع (tawadu) is also a recognized Islamic virtue — positive bridge, low collision | ځان ته تواضع وکړئ / متواضع شئ | Medium |
| lawgiver and judge | νομοθέτης καὶ κριτής | nomothetēs kai kritēs | ”lawgiver and judge” | God’s unique dual authority to establish and enforce moral law | ”lawgiver and judge” | REUSE ناموس (Critical); paired here with judicial authority — connects to the eschatological Judge title in ch.5 | د ناموس ورکوونکی او قاضي/داور | High |
| if the Lord wills | ἐὰν ὁ κύριος θελήσῃ | ean ho kyrios thelēsē | ”if the Lord should will [it]“ | conditioning human plans on divine sovereignty | ”if the Lord wills,” “God willing” | Strong natural-language bridge: near-identical in form and daily usage to the ubiquitous “In sha’Allah” (إن شاء الله); low collision risk, but confirm خداوند/خدای here still refers to the God of the gospel per established convention, not a generic fatalistic formula emptied of content | که خداوند وغواړي | Medium |
Chapter 5 — Warning to the Rich, Patience and the Lord’s Return, Prayer and Healing, Confession and Restoration
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Pashto Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| wages of the laborers | μισθὸς τῶν ἐργατῶν | misthos tōn ergatōn | ”the pay/wage of the workers” | withheld/unjust wages, an OT prophetic indictment (cf. Malachi 3:5) | “wages of the laborers,” “workers’ pay” | Live pastoral-justice application given Pashtun agrarian land-owner/laborer dynamics; low term-level risk, Medium doctrinal application risk | د کارکوونکو مزدوري | Medium |
| Lord of hosts / Lord Sabaoth | κύριος σαβαώθ | kyrios sabaōth | ”Lord of [heavenly] armies” | transliterated Hebrew military-sovereignty title for God | ”Lord of hosts,” “Lord Sabaoth,” “Lord of armies” | REUSE established خداوند (Critical). The military/“hosts” imagery requires care in a region marked by decades of literal armed conflict; must be clarified as a title of God’s sovereign power over all created and heavenly authority, never as endorsement of or comparison to literal warfare/jihad framing | د لښکرو خداوند | High |
| patience [in waiting] | μακροθυμία | makrothymia | ”long-temperedness,” patient forbearance | patience specifically toward people/circumstances while waiting, distinct from ὑπομονή’s endurance-under-pressure sense | ”patience,” “long-suffering,” “forbearance” | Distinguished from ch.1’s ὑπομονή (endurance under trial); paired with the farmer-waiting-for-rain illustration (5:7) | صبر (sabr) | High |
| the coming of the Lord | ἡ παρουσία τοῦ κυρίου | hē parousia tou kyriou | ”the arrival/presence/coming of the Lord” | technical NT term for Christ’s promised return in glory as sovereign Judge | ”the coming of the Lord,” “the Lord’s return,” “the Parousia” | CRITICAL: Islamic eschatology includes a shared expectation of Isa’s (Jesus’s) return, but subordinated to the Mahdi and cast in a very different role (affirming Islam, defeating the Dajjal) than the NT’s sovereign, self-returning divine Judge and Bridegroom. This shared-vocabulary-different-content collision must be actively corrected at every occurrence, on the same footing as the baseline’s messiah and resurrection_of_christ Critical entries | د خداوند راتلل | Critical |
| Job’s endurance | ἡ ὑπομονὴ Ἰώβ | hē hypomonē Iōb | ”the endurance of Job” | reference to Job’s proverbial steadfastness under suffering | ”Job’s patience/endurance” | Strong positive bridge: Job (Ayyub) and his proverbial patience (“sabr Ayyub”) are already a well-known, positively-regarded Islamic virtue paradigm — a genuine cultural asset for teaching this doctrine | د ایوب زغم | Medium (positive) |
| the judge is standing at the door | ὁ κριτὴς πρὸ τῶν θυρῶν ἕστηκεν | ho kritēs pro tōn thyrōn hestēken | ”the judge stands before the doors” | imminence of final judgment | ”the Judge stands at the door,” “the Judge is at the gates” | قاضي (qazi) evokes the formal Islamic sharia-court judge role; داور (dawar) is more neutral but may still evoke tribal jirga adjudication. Either way, must clarify Christ’s eschatological judgeship as neither a sharia-court role nor a jirga-elder role, but unique divine authority | داور د دروازې پر سر ولاړ دی | High |
| do not swear | μὴ ὀμνύετε | mē omnyete | ”do not swear [an oath]“ | prohibition/restriction on oath-taking, echoing Matthew 5:33-37 | ”do not swear,” “take no oaths” | Oaths (قسم) carry heavy legal-social weight in both Islamic law and Pashtunwali tribal custom (e.g., stone/Qur’an oath-taking); must be taught as a call to integrity of everyday speech (“let your yes be yes”), not a blanket prohibition on all formal legal oath contexts | قسم مه خورئ | High |
| prayer of faith | ἡ εὐχὴ τῆς πίστεως | hē euchē tēs pisteōs | ”the vow/prayer of faith” | prayer offered in confident trust | ”the prayer of faith” | REUSE established ایمان | د ایمان دعا | High (reuse) |
| anoint with oil | ἀλείψαντες ἐλαίῳ | aleipsantes elaiō | ”having anointed with oil” | a simple physical act accompanying prayer for the sick | ”anoint with oil” | Must be distinguished from folk-Islamic amulet (taweez) and ruqya exorcism practices common in the region’s folk religion; this is a simple, faith-expressing physical act of care, not a magical or protective ritual object | په غوړ سره تیلي کول | High |
| elders | πρεσβύτεροι | presbyteroi | ”elder ones” | recognized spiritual leaders/overseers of a local congregation | ”elders” | Strong dual-meaning cultural resonance: مشران (meshran) is the everyday word for tribal/village elders exercising customary jirga authority; using it for church elders offers a familiar leadership category but must be clearly distinguished from tribal-jirga legal/customary authority — church elders exercise spiritual care and prayer ministry, not tribal adjudication | مشران (کلیسا) | High |
| save the sick / the Lord will raise him up | σώσει τὸν κάμνοντα / ἐγερεῖ αὐτὸν ὁ κύριος | sōsei ton kamnonta / egerei auton ho kyrios | ”will save/heal the one who is weary/ill” / “the Lord will raise him up” | σώζω here in a physical-healing sense, distinct from but related to soteriological “salvation" | "will save/heal the sick,” “the Lord will raise him up” | REUSE established نجات and خداوند; must clarify σώζω’s range here (physical healing) without diluting the doctrinal weight of نجات elsewhere as spiritual salvation | به یې روغ (نجات) کړي / خداوند به یې راپورته کړي | Critical (reuse) |
| sins will be forgiven | ἀφεθήσεται αὐτῷ | aphethēsetai autō | ”it will be forgiven/released to him” | ἀφίημι: releasing, letting go, remitting a debt | ”will be forgiven” | New term for this glossary; broadly compatible with Islamic forgiveness concepts (Allah’s ghafur/rahim attributes) but must be tied specifically to Christ’s authority and the prayer of faith, not generic divine mercy dispensed apart from the gospel | بخښل کیږي | Medium |
| confess your sins to one another | ἐξομολογεῖσθε ἀλλήλοις τὰς ἁμαρτίας | exomologeisthe allēlois tas hamartias | ”confess/acknowledge sins to one another” | mutual, voluntary, restorative confession within the believing community | ”confess your sins to one another” | CRITICAL — safety-critical term: اقرار (formal legal confession/admission) carries connotations of judicial/punitive confession under Islamic jurisprudence categories. Given the real physical danger converts face if private matters (including Christian practice itself) become known, “confess to one another” must be taught strictly as safe, voluntary, healing disclosure within a small trusted house-church circle — never implying formal, public, or judicially-binding admission. Directly connects to baseline’s Critical church_as_gods_people note on dispersed, secret community | یو تر بل ګناهونه بیانول (mandatory safety framing) | Critical |
| cover a multitude of sins | καλύψει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν | kalypsei plēthos hamartiōn | ”will cover a multitude of sins” | God’s gracious forgiveness extended through restorative correction | ”will cover a multitude of sins” | High risk of misreading through the honor-shame “cover-up-to-preserve-honor” cultural script (concealment of wrongdoing to protect family/tribal honor, sometimes escalating to honor-based violence); must be clarified as gracious forgiveness through genuine repentance and restoration, never culturally-driven concealment that avoids accountability | ډیری ګناهونه پوښي (mandatory clarifying note) | High |
| turn back a sinner from wandering | ἐπιστρέψῃ ἁμαρτωλὸν ἐκ πλάνης | epistrepsē hamartōlon ek planēs | ”turn back a sinner from error/wandering” | restorative pursuit of a straying believer | ”turn back a sinner,” “bring back one who wanders” | Ties sin (established ګناه) to the restoration doctrine; low independent term risk | ګناهکار له تیري نه راګرځول | Medium |
| Elijah | Ἠλίας | Ēlias | proper name | shared, positively-regarded Quranic prophet (Ilyas) | “Elijah” | Good bridge figure; note the specific narrative detail (withholding rain 3.5 years through prayer) as consistent biblical history supplementing, not contradicting, the shared prophetic tradition | الیاس | Medium |
Cross-Book Consistency Requirements
- Every occurrence of πίστις, χάρις, δικαιοσύνη/δικαιόω, σωτηρία/σῴζω, νόμος, κύριος, θεός, πατήρ, ἁμαρτία, εἰρήνη, κοινωνία, βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ, ἐκκλησία must reuse the exact baseline Pashto rendering, with James-specific sense distinctions layered on as translator notes, never as alternate renderings.
- The δικαιόω tension (James 2 vindication-sense vs. Romans forensic-sense) requires a standing harmonizing footnote template to be applied at every occurrence in James 2:14-26, carried forward into Phase 2 segment translation.
- ἔργα (works) is proposed as a new Critical-risk term: کارونه, never اعمال, for the reasons given at James 2:14.
- πειρασμός/πειράζω requires two distinct Pashto renderings by context (ازموینه for trial, وسوسه for temptation-to-sin) — this dual-rendering rule must be documented in translation memory as an explicit disambiguation instruction, not left to per-segment translator judgment.
- ὑπομονή (ch.1, ch.5:11) and μακροθυμία (ch.5:7-8,10) are distinct terms requiring distinct renderings (زغم vs. صبر respectively) despite both being glossed “patience” in English.
