Executive Summary
Executive Summary: 2 John (English → Pashto) — Phase 1
Why it matters
2 John is short — thirteen verses — but it concentrates some of the highest-stakes translation decisions in this entire pipeline into a single chapter. Its core passage (1:4-11) requires a Pashto-speaking, mostly Muslim-convert house-church readership to affirm Christ’s genuine incarnation, reject a specific class of traveling false teacher, and withhold two forms of customary social endorsement from that teacher — all while the surrounding culture treats hospitality (melmastia) and the exchange of salam as near-sacred, honor-bound, safety-relevant obligations. Getting this book wrong risks either theological compromise (softening the incarnation or Christ’s deity) or real physical danger to readers (if withholding fellowship is confused with withholding the everyday social greeting from Muslim neighbors). This Language Package extension exists to make both risks explicit and manageable before Phase 2 translation begins.
Key findings
- 37 total glossary terms are now tracked for this curriculum in
translation_memory.json: 10 inherited unchanged from the Romans baseline (grace, peace, father, son_of_god, jesus, messiah, god, election, fellowship, incarnation) and 27 newly introduced by 2 John. - 10 terms are Critical risk and 15 terms are High risk — 25 of 37 terms (68%) require mandatory human theologian review wherever they occur, a notably higher concentration than the Romans baseline given this letter’s short length and doctrinally dense core passage.
- 15 doctrines are documented in
doctrine_risk_registry.json: 4 Critical, 6 High, 4 Medium, 1 Low — 10 of 15 doctrines (67%) require human theologian review; 4 require native speaker review; 1 is automated-only. - Two doctrines in this book — Refusing House Reception to False Teachers and Withholding the Doctrinal Greeting — have no direct Romans precedent and are the most acute new safety risks introduced by this curriculum, on top of the Christological risks (Denial of the Incarnation, Spirit of Antichrist) that intensify existing Romans-baseline patterns.
- Full-book coverage is confirmed: all 13 verses of the chapter have been reviewed (07, 08, 11 documents), including salutation (1:1-3) and closing (1:12-13) sections that introduce no Critical doctrine but do introduce Medium-risk honorific-address terms requiring careful fencing from the Romans election doctrine.
Risks
- Antichrist / Dajjal collision (Critical). A wrong lexical choice (الدجال) would relocate “antichrist” inside the Sunni Mahdi/Dajjal end-times narrative, which itself denies Christ’s crucifixion, resurrection, and deity. Mitigated by mandating ضد مسیح.
- Incarnation denial (Critical). 2 John 1:7 is this curriculum’s single highest-stakes phrase, compounding the Qur’an’s tawhid objection with mainstream Islamic Christology’s explicit prophet-only view of Isa, against Pashto’s thinnest incarnational-vocabulary precedent in the pipeline. Mitigated by mandatory periphrastic pairing (په غوښه راتلل + تجسد).
- Withheld-greeting safety risk (Critical). Rendering the withheld χαίρειν with سلام risks real physical danger for Muslim-background readers, since withholding salam signals excommunication or apostasy exposure in the surrounding culture. Mitigated by a bounded, non-سلام phrase plus mandatory translator’s notes at every occurrence.
- Melmastia hospitality collision (Critical). The command to refuse house reception to a false teacher runs directly against Pashtunwali’s near-sacred hospitality code and, because “the house” often IS the covert house-church, carries genuine security implications. Mitigated by requiring explicit doctrinal reasoning alongside every occurrence.
- Deeds-weighing bleed-through (High). “Reward” (اجر) and “evil works” (بد عملونه) both sit inside Islamic soteriological and judgment vocabulary; without careful framing, either could be misread as contributing to a merit-based standing before God, contradicting فضل (grace) alone.
- Naskh (abrogation) collision (High). The claim that the love-commandment is “not new… but from the beginning” (1:5-6) runs against the live Islamic doctrine that later revelation supersedes earlier revelation, requiring explicit anti-naskh framing rather than assumed comprehension.
Opportunities
- مشر (elder, 1:1) offers a genuine, positively-resonant cultural bridge to jirga elder authority, usable to build trust in the apostolic-pastoral voice of the letter, provided it is anchored away from tribal-political authority.
- رحمت (mercy, 1:3) and سوله (peace, 1:3) both carry strong positive resonance with regional Islamic piety and lived conflict-resolution experience respectively, giving this letter’s salutation an unusually warm on-ramp for a Pashtun audience when anchored explicitly to the Father and the Son together.
- The letter’s structural warmth (1:4, 1:12-13 — rejoicing, longing for face-to-face fellowship) provides a built-in counterbalance to the sternness of vv. 7-11, useful for teaching the full range of pastoral tone this Language Package requires.
Recommended actions
- Load
assets/translation_memory.json(2 John) and confirm all 10 inherited Romans terms remain byte-for-byte unchanged before any Phase 2 segment translation begins. - Route all Critical-tier terms and doctrines — antichrist, coming-in-flesh/incarnation, receive-into-house, withheld-greeting, and the four corresponding doctrines — to mandatory human theologian review with zero exceptions, per
analysis/12_ai_translation_requirements.md. - Attach the mandatory translator’s note to every rendering of 2 John 1:10-11’s withholding instruction, distinguishing it explicitly from the everyday social obligation to exchange salam.
- Enforce the qualifier discipline (
د پلار حکم,د مسیح تعلیم) at every occurrence of “commandment” and “teaching” respectively; flag bare occurrences for native speaker review. - Carry the two new Critical Forbidden Substitutions (الدجال, سلام-in-withholding-context) and the extended fellowship-verb substitution rule (شریکول/شراکت for ملګری کیدل) into all Phase 2 validation tooling before batch processing begins.
