Cross-Reference Analysis

Cross-Reference Analysis: 2 Timothy (English → Pashto)

Purpose and Method

This document maps every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every significant parallel to the Romans curriculum found across all four chapters of 2 Timothy. Its purpose is to give Phase 2 translators and reviewers a single lookup table so that (a) OT material already anchored to an established Pashto Bible book-name convention is rendered consistently, and (b) any wording shared with the Romans Language Package is never re-invented but reused verbatim.

Full-book coverage confirmation: all four chapters of 2 Timothy were searched for OT quotation/allusion material, messianic content, and typology. Every chapter contributes at least one entry below; none is vocabulary-empty.

Citation format: All references use the normalized “Book Chapter:Verse” style (e.g., “2 Timothy 3:16”, “Genesis 15:6”, “2 Samuel 7:12-16”). Where the destination-language OT book name is not yet fixed in the baseline package, this is flagged in Part F for confirmation before Phase 2 batch processing, per the baseline’s own cross-reference convention (12_ai_translation_requirements.md, “Cross-Reference Preservation Rules”).

Part A — OT Quotation and Allusion Matrix (Chapter Order)

#Passage (2 Timothy)ThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
A12 Timothy 1:5Faithful transmission across generationsLois, Eunice, TimothyTypological parallel to Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (teaching children the commandments); echoes the household-faith pattern of Genesis 18:19 (Abraham instructing his household)Low. Present positively; no collision risk. Reinforces “Faithful Transmission of the Gospel” as a family/household reality, resonant with Pashtun extended-family religious formation.
A22 Timothy 1:6Ordination / commissioning by laying on of handsPaul, Timothy; cf. Moses, JoshuaNumbers 27:18-23; Deuteronomy 34:9 (Moses commissions Joshua by laying on of hands and impartation of spirit); NT parallel Acts 6:6, 1 Timothy 4:14Medium. The Moses→Joshua succession pattern is a genuine positive typological resource for teaching “The Charge to Preach the Word” as a passed-down commissioning, not self-appointment.
A32 Timothy 1:8-9Unashamed suffering; eternal grace-electionPaulEchoes Servant-Song confidence of Isaiah 50:7 (“I shall not be ashamed”); “grace…before the world began” parallels Titus 1:2, and conceptually Ephesians 1:4High. Honor-shame reversal theme (see 07_semantic_analysis.md, ἐπαισχύνομαι note); teach as inversion of ordinary shame-calculus, directly relevant to a persecuted readership.
A42 Timothy 1:10Christ’s incarnate appearing abolishes deathChristFulfills Isaiah 25:8 (“he will swallow up death in victory”) and Hosea 13:14 (also quoted 1 Corinthians 15:54-55)Critical. Direct extension of the baseline incarnation and resurrection_of_christ Critical doctrines; death’s abolition must be tied to the historical, bodily resurrection, not a general afterlife belief.
A52 Timothy 2:2Chain of faithful transmissionPaul, Timothy, “faithful men”Echoes Deuteronomy 4:9 and Psalm 78:5-6 (transmitting God’s word to the next generation); NT parallel 1 Corinthians 11:23 (“I received…I delivered”)Medium. Central proof text for “Faithful Transmission of the Gospel”; content must remain the fixed apostolic deposit (see A-entry parathēkē/امانت, 08_core_glossary.md), not subject to reinterpretation at each transmission stage.
A62 Timothy 2:8Messianic Davidic descent and resurrectionJesus Christ; David2 Samuel 7:12-16; Psalm 89:3-4; Isaiah 11:1; Jeremiah 23:5-6 — fulfilled in ChristCritical / Romans parallel. Exact lexical match to Romans 1:3 (“of the seed of David”). MUST reuse baseline TM entries seed_of_david (د داود نسل) and david (داود) verbatim; see Part D and Part E rule R1.
A72 Timothy 2:9Imprisoned messenger, unbound messagePaul; typologically JeremiahTypological parallel to Jeremiah’s imprisonment while God’s word continued (Jeremiah 20:1-2, 37:15-21; cf. Jeremiah 36 — the scroll survives even when burned)Medium-High. Encouraging parallel for an imprisonment-risk readership: God’s messengers may be bound, God’s message is not.
A82 Timothy 2:11-13Union with Christ in death and life; God’s unwavering faithfulnessChrist, believersCreedal/hymnic formula; echoes Numbers 23:19 (“God is not a man, that he should lie”) and 1 Samuel 15:29; NT parallel Titus 1:2High / Major Romans parallel. Directly parallels Romans 6:8 (“if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him”). See Part D and Part E rule R2. The warning (“if we deny him, he also will deny us”) must be balanced against “he abideth faithful,” paralleling the baseline’s caution on election/predestination language.
A92 Timothy 2:19God’s sure knowledge of his own; call to depart from iniquity(a) “the Lord knoweth them that are his” — Numbers 16:5 (LXX); (b) “let every one…depart from iniquity” — echoes Isaiah 52:11 (“depart…touch no unclean thing”) and the holiness-call pattern of Leviticus 24:16High. Key proof text for “Assurance of Reward” grounded in God’s own faithfulness (see themelios/بنسټ, 08_core_glossary.md), not believer performance; must not be read as a performance-based security test.
A102 Timothy 2:20-21Vessels of honor and dishonorJeremiah 18:1-6 (the potter and the clay)High / Major Romans parallel. Directly parallels Romans 9:19-23 (potter/vessels of wrath and mercy). See Part D and Part E rule R3.
A112 Timothy 2:24-26God-granted repentanceEchoes God’s kindness leading to repentance (cf. Romans 2:4); NT parallel Acts 11:18 (“granted repentance”)High. Reinforces the baseline’s caution (already flagged for metanoia/توبه in 08_core_glossary.md) that repentance here is God’s sovereign gift, not merely human turning, against the Islamic tawba default.
A122 Timothy 3:1-5Vice list marking the “last days”Structural and substantial vocabulary overlap with Romans 1:29-31High / Major Romans parallel. See Part D and Part E rule R4 — item-by-item vocabulary must be checked against however Romans 1:29-31 was rendered in this language pair before finalizing.
A132 Timothy 3:6-7Deception of the vulnerable”silly women laden with sins”; typologically EveGenesis 3:1-6, 3:13 (the serpent’s deception of Eve); NT parallel 1 Timothy 2:14Medium. Handle pastorally — the text targets a specific historical deception tactic of false teachers, not a general statement about women’s spiritual capacity; must not be over-read as misogynistic doctrine.
A142 Timothy 3:8False teachers opposing God’s true messengerJannes, Jambres; typologically MosesExodus 7:11-12, 7:22 (Pharaoh’s unnamed magicians who opposed Moses; the names Jannes and Jambres come from extra-biblical Jewish tradition, not the Exodus text itself)Medium-High. Translators should note in teaching material that these two names are traditional identifications, not found in the Exodus text itself, to preempt a “missing OT source” objection from a hearer checking the Exodus account directly.
A152 Timothy 3:11Historical persecution enduredPaul; Antioch, Iconium, LystraNT-internal cross-reference: Acts 13:14-14:20 (not an OT connection)Low. Confirms the historicity of Paul’s suffering testimony; no doctrinal collision risk.
A162 Timothy 3:12Persecution as the normal experience of godlinessPsalm 34:19; Matthew 5:10-12; John 15:20Medium-High / Romans parallel. Parallels Romans 8:17 and Romans 5:3-5 (suffering produces proven character, leading to hope). Reinforces “Perseverance under Suffering” as validating, not abnormal, for this readership.
A172 Timothy 3:15Scripture known from childhoodTimothyBackground pattern: Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (Shema instruction to children); Psalm 119:9-11 (the young man guided by God’s word)High. See 07_semantic_analysis.md hiera grammata note — must not be heard as a generic “holy book” nor a corrupted predecessor superseded by later revelation.
A182 Timothy 3:16The nature and purpose of all ScriptureConceptually undergirded by Psalm 19:7-11 and Psalm 119 (Scripture’s perfecting, reviving, wise-making sufficiency); Isaiah 40:8 (“the word of our God shall stand for ever,” quoted 1 Peter 1:24-25); NT parallel 2 Peter 1:20-21Critical. The doctrinal center of “Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture” for the whole curriculum; see 07/08 for the θεόπνευστος/الهام note.
A192 Timothy 4:1Christ as universal Judge, at his appearing and kingdomChristDaniel 7:13-14 (the Son of Man given everlasting dominion and kingdom); Psalm 96:13, Psalm 98:9 (“he shall judge the world with righteousness”); NT parallels Acts 10:42, 1 Peter 4:5, 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10Critical. Messianic/Christological; see Part B. Christ’s exclusive judgment prerogative and kingdom directly extend the baseline deity_of_christ and kingdom_of_god Critical/Medium doctrines.
A202 Timothy 4:2The charge to proclaimConceptually parallels Isaiah 61:1 (proclamation of good news) and the herald-motif of Isaiah 40:9, 52:7; direct Romans parallel belowCritical / Romans parallel. See Part D — parallels Romans 10:14-15 and Romans 1:14-16 (Paul’s debtor-obligation to preach).
A212 Timothy 4:3-4Rejection of sound doctrine for pleasing fablesIsaiah 30:9-11 (“a rebellious people…which say to the seers, See not”); Jeremiah 5:31 (false prophets prophesy falsely, and the people love it)Critical. Core proof text for “Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days”; the OT pattern (people preferring flattering falsehood) is the same pattern Paul predicts for the church.
A222 Timothy 4:6Paul’s life poured out as an offeringPaul; typologically ChristNumbers 15:5, 28:7 (drink/libation offerings in the sacrificial system); typological fulfillment pattern in Isaiah 53:12 (“he…poured out his soul unto death”); NT parallel Philippians 2:17Medium-High. Must be clearly distinguished from the Islamic qurbani (Eid al-Adha animal sacrifice) association triggered by the natural Pashto rendering قربانۍ; this is Paul’s own life and impending death, understood in light of Christ’s self-offering, not a ritual animal sacrifice.
A232 Timothy 4:8Crown of righteousness for those who love his appearingChrist, believersConceptually parallels Romans 2:7 (“to them who…seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life”) and Romans 8:18; NT parallels James 1:12, Revelation 2:10, 1 Peter 5:4High / Major Romans parallel. See Part D and Part E rule R5 — must be anchored to imputed_righteousness (Romans 4:3, citing Genesis 15:6) so the crown is understood as grace’s completion, not separate merit.
A242 Timothy 4:14Recompense according to deedsAlexander the coppersmithPsalm 62:12 (“thou renderest to every man according to his work”); Proverbs 24:12Medium / Romans parallel. Parallels Romans 2:6 almost verbatim; see Part E rule R6.
A252 Timothy 4:16-17Deliverance from mortal dangerPaul; typologically Daniel, DavidPsalm 22:21 (“save me from the lion’s mouth”); Daniel 6:22 (Daniel delivered from the lions); 1 Samuel 17:34-37 (David delivered from the lion)High. Strong typological deliverance pattern, directly encouraging for a readership facing real danger; must be taught as God’s specific rescue in trial, distinct from the doctrine of salvation itself (see 07_semantic_analysis.md rhyomai note).
A262 Timothy 4:18Preservation unto the heavenly kingdom; closing doxologyPsalm 121:7 (“The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil”); Matthew 6:13 (“deliver us from evil”)Medium / Romans parallel. Doxology form (“to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen”) parallels Romans 11:36 and Romans 16:27; see Part E rule R7.
A272 Timothy 4:22Closing grace-benedictionStandard Pauline epistolary closing formulaLow / Romans parallel. Parallels Romans 16:20, 16:24; see Part E rule R8.

Part B — Messianic References

PassageMessianic ContentOT RootCorrective Teaching Note
2 Timothy 1:10Christ’s first appearing (incarnation) abolishing death, bringing life and immortality to lightIsaiah 25:8; Hosea 13:14Critical. Must be taught alongside the baseline’s incarnation doctrine — the historical, bodily reality of God becoming man, against the tawhid objection.
2 Timothy 2:8Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, raised from the dead2 Samuel 7:12-16; Psalm 89:3-4; Isaiah 11:1; Jeremiah 23:5-6Critical. The Davidic covenant-king typology fulfilled bodily and historically in Christ; reuse baseline seed_of_david/david entries exactly (see Part D, R1).
2 Timothy 4:1Christ’s second appearing as universal Judge and King of an eternal kingdomDaniel 7:13-14; Psalm 96:13; Psalm 98:9Critical. Collides directly with Sunni eschatology’s subordinate Isa-returns-to-Medina narrative; must assert Christ’s own sovereign judgeship, not a delegated or completing role under another prophet’s mission.
2 Timothy 4:8”his appearing” as the object of believers’ love and hope, tied to reward(see 4:1 above; also connects to Titus 2:13’s “glorious appearing”)High. Reinforces the second-appearing sense of ἐπιφάνεια established at 4:1; keep disambiguated from 1:10’s first-appearing sense throughout teaching materials (see 07_semantic_analysis.md ἐπιφάνεια note).

Part C — Typological Patterns

Type (OT)Antitype / Application (2 Timothy)Passage(s)Teaching Note
Moses commissioning Joshua as his successor (Numbers 27:18-23; Deuteronomy 34:9)Paul commissioning Timothy as his ministry successor2 Timothy 1:6; 2:2A strong, positive structural resource for “Faithful Transmission of the Gospel” and “The Charge to Preach the Word” — an entrusted, successive, non-self-appointed ministry.
Jeremiah imprisoned while God’s word endures (Jeremiah 20:1-2; 36:1-32; 37:15-21)Paul imprisoned while “the word of God is not bound”2 Timothy 2:9Encouraging typological pattern for a persecution-context readership: the messenger’s bonds do not bind the message.
The potter and the clay (Jeremiah 18:1-6)Vessels of honor and dishonor within the household of faith2 Timothy 2:20-21Shared type also underlying Romans 9:19-23; see Part D and Part E rule R3 for rendering consistency.
Eve deceived by the serpent (Genesis 3:1-6, 3:13)Vulnerable believers deceived by false teachers2 Timothy 3:6-7Applies the protological pattern of deception-through-flattery to the “last days” false-teacher problem; must not be read as a general claim about women’s spiritual competence.
Pharaoh’s magicians opposing Moses (Exodus 7:11-12, 7:22; traditionally named Jannes and Jambres)False teachers opposing sound doctrine and Timothy’s ministry2 Timothy 3:8Establishes a recurring biblical pattern: true God-sent messengers are always opposed by counterfeit ones; useful for normalizing the false-teacher problem as expected, not a sign of the true message’s failure.
Daniel delivered from the lions (Daniel 6:16-23); David delivered from the lion (1 Samuel 17:34-37); the psalmist’s cry “save me from the lion’s mouth” (Psalm 22:21)Paul delivered “out of the mouth of the lion”2 Timothy 4:17A vivid, encouraging deliverance-type directly applicable to a readership under real threat; teach as God’s specific, personal rescue pattern, not a guarantee against all suffering (cf. Paul’s own eventual martyrdom).
The drink/libation offering poured out in the sacrificial system (Numbers 15:5; 28:7); the Servant’s soul “poured out unto death” (Isaiah 53:12)Paul’s life poured out in death, modeled after Christ’s self-giving2 Timothy 4:6Frames martyrdom-facing suffering as participation in a pattern fulfilled first and supremely in Christ, not a repeatable atoning sacrifice of one’s own.

Part D — Parallels to the Romans Curriculum (Same Language Pair)

This curriculum is the second in the Pashto pipeline after Romans. Wherever 2 Timothy touches vocabulary or doctrine already anchored in the Romans baseline package, that rendering is authoritative and must not be re-derived.

2 Timothy PassageRomans PassageShared ConceptBaseline TM Term(s) to ReuseNotes
2 Timothy 2:8Romans 1:3”Of the seed of David” — Davidic descent of Christseed_of_david (د داود نسل), david (داود)Verbatim reuse required; both passages describe the identical fact (Christ’s Davidic lineage) using nearly identical Greek phrasing.
2 Timothy 2:11-13Romans 6:1-11Union with Christ in death and resurrected liferesurrection (بیا راژوندي کیدل)The hymnic “if we died with him, we shall also live with him” pattern must echo whatever verbal pairing (مړه کیدل / ژوندی کیدل) is used for Romans 6:8 in this language pair, once produced.
2 Timothy 2:20-21Romans 9:19-23Potter/vessel imagery for honor and dishonor within God’s sovereign purposes(no existing TM term; see Part E R3)Both passages use the same figure; coordinate the Pashto rendering of “vessel” (لوښی, already proposed in 08_core_glossary.md) so future Romans 9 translation work in this pair matches.
2 Timothy 3:1-5Romans 1:29-31Vice list marking human rebellion against God(item-level TM not yet extracted from Romans baseline)See Part E R4 — flag for Phase 2 cross-check against however Romans 1:29-31 was rendered.
2 Timothy 3:12Romans 5:3-5; Romans 8:17Suffering as the normal, even fruitful, experience of faithful discipleship(concept parallel only; no single shared TM term)Reinforces rather than introduces new risk; teach the two passages together for mutual reinforcement.
2 Timothy 4:1-2Romans 1:14-16; Romans 10:14-15The obligation and urgency of gospel proclamationgospel (انجیل), mission (ماموریت)Reuse baseline’s safety-critical framing verbatim; the “how shall they hear without a preacher” logic of Romans 10 directly explains why the 2 Timothy 4:2 charge is so weighty.
2 Timothy 4:8Romans 2:7; Romans 4:3 (citing Genesis 15:6); Romans 8:18Reward/glory as the outworking of a righteousness already credited by faith, not separately earnedimputed_righteousness (محسوبه شوی صداقت), righteousness (صداقت), glory (جلال)Critical anchor point — see Part E R5. Prevents the “crown of righteousness” from being read as merit added on top of grace.
2 Timothy 4:14Romans 2:6God’s recompense according to each person’s deeds(concept parallel; consider adding a shared TM entry in a later step)Nearly verbatim wording in both letters; render identically once one is fixed.
2 Timothy 4:18Romans 11:36; Romans 16:27Closing doxology (“to him be glory for ever and ever. Amen”)glory (جلال)See Part E R7 — fixed liturgical formula, must match exactly across both curricula.
2 Timothy 4:22Romans 16:20, 16:24Closing grace-benedictiongrace (فضل)See Part E R8.
2 Timothy 1:7-8Romans 1:16”Power of God” as the Spirit’s enabling for bold, unashamed gospel ministrypower_of_god (د خدای قدرت)Reuse exactly.
2 Timothy 4:1, 4:18Romans 14:17 (and baseline kingdom_of_god note)God’s/Christ’s kingdom distinguished from political-religious sovereignty claimskingdom_of_god (د خدای پاچاهي)Reuse exactly; retain baseline’s “Islamic Emirate” state-framing caution, now sharpened by 4:1’s judgment context.

Part E — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations and Parallel Passages

  1. R1 — Seed of David: Wherever 2 Timothy 2:8 renders “of the seed of David,” use the identical Pashto phrase already fixed for Romans 1:3: د داود نسل (da Dawud nasl). Never re-translate independently.
  2. R2 — Union-with-Christ death/life formula: The 2 Timothy 2:11-13 hymnic pairing (“died with him / live with him”) must use the same verb pair chosen for Romans 6:8 once that verse is rendered in this language pair. Record the chosen pair in translation memory the first time either passage is translated, and enforce it thereafter in both curricula.
  3. R3 — Potter/vessel imagery: The “vessel unto honour/unto dishonour” language of 2 Timothy 2:20-21 shares its root figure with the “vessel of wrath / vessel of mercy” language of Romans 9:19-23. Use لوښی (loshi, “vessel”) as the shared base noun in both passages; only the honor/dishonor and wrath/mercy qualifiers differ (د عزت لپاره لوښی / د سپکاوي لپاره لوښی here; د غضب لوښی / د رحمت لوښی if/when Romans 9 is translated in this pair). Flag both passages to the same reviewer for cross-check when Romans 9 material is eventually processed.
  4. R4 — Vice lists: Before finalizing 2 Timothy 3:1-5, cross-check every recurring vice-list item (e.g., “proud,” “boasters,” “disobedient,” “unthankful,” “unholy,” “without natural affection,” “fierce,” “despisers of good,” “traitors,” “heady,” “highminded,” “lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God”) against the Pashto wording used for the overlapping items in Romans 1:29-31, if that passage has already been rendered in this pipeline. Where no prior rendering exists, the choice made for 2 Timothy 3:1-5 becomes authoritative for any future Romans 1 retranslation pass — record it in translation memory explicitly as a cross-curriculum anchor.
  5. R5 — Crown of righteousness / imputed righteousness: Every occurrence of “crown of righteousness” (2 Timothy 4:8) must carry an explicit teaching note tying it back to imputed_righteousness (محسوبه شوی صداقت, Romans 4:3, citing Genesis 15:6) so the reward is understood as the gracious completion of a righteousness already credited by faith, never a separately earned merit-badge. This note is mandatory at every occurrence per the baseline’s Critical-tier enforcement rule.
  6. R6 — Recompense according to deeds: “The Lord reward him according to his works” (2 Timothy 4:14) and “who will render to every man according to his deeds” (Romans 2:6) should use matching Pashto verb-and-object structure (رد ورکول / بدله ورکول + د هغه کړنو سره سم) once either is fixed in translation memory.
  7. R7 — Closing doxology: “To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen” (2 Timothy 4:18) must match the Pashto wording used for the identical formula in Romans 11:36 and Romans 16:27, reusing جلال (jalal, glory) and the fixed آمین (Amen) transliteration per the baseline’s transliteration standards.
  8. R8 — Closing grace-benediction: “Grace be with you(all). Amen” (2 Timothy 4:22) must match Romans 16:20/16:24’s closing formula exactly, reusing فضل (fazal, grace).
  9. R9 — Proper names and OT book names: All OT figures and books referenced in this document (Moses, David, Daniel, Jeremiah, Isaiah, etc.) must use the same transliterated forms as fixed in the baseline 12_ai_translation_requirements.md Transliteration Standards, extended per Part F below.
  10. R10 — Appearing (ἐπιφάνεια) disambiguation: Because the same Pashto rendering (راڅرګندېدنه) covers both Christ’s first appearing (1:10, incarnation) and second appearing (4:1, 4:8, return/judgment), every occurrence must be accompanied by a clarifying phrase (لومړی راڅرګندېدنه / “first appearing” vs. راتلونکی راڅرګندېدنه / “coming/future appearing”) so a hearer cannot conflate the two events. Apply this same disambiguation rule to any future Pauline-corpus curriculum in this pipeline sharing the term (e.g., Titus 2:13, 1 Timothy 6:14).

Part F — Citation Normalization Reference

All citations in this document and downstream Phase 2 outputs should follow “Book Chapter:Verse” format. Book names for 2 Timothy and Romans already follow the baseline’s established convention. The following additional OT book names are referenced in this analysis and must be confirmed against the destination platform’s established Pashto Old Testament publication before Phase 2 batch processing (per the baseline’s own instruction to “confirm with the destination platform before batch processing”):

This document extends but never contradicts the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json, and it never contradicts analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md or analysis/08_core_glossary.md. Any new term surfaced here purely for OT citation purposes (e.g., proper names of OT books or figures not already fixed) should be added to translation memory in a later step, following the same version-increment discipline described in the baseline package.
