Executive Summary
01 Executive Summary — 1 Corinthians Language Package (Vietnamese)
Smart Brevity Format
Why it matters
1 Corinthians brings the Vietnamese destination-culture syncretism risk identified in the Romans baseline into direct, weekly, kitchen-table contact. Where Romans mostly required guarding abstract doctrinal vocabulary (grace, salvation, resurrection) against Buddhist and Confucian concepts, 1 Corinthians repeatedly collides with Vietnamese believers’ lived practice — ancestor food-offerings (của cúng), death-anniversary memorial meals (giỗ, cúng cơm), spirit-mediumship (hầu đồng), and folk curse rituals (bùa, ngải, trù ẻo). This Language Package extension is what makes the difference between a translation that is merely lexically correct and one that protects a Vietnamese convert navigating a real family meal or a real accusation of dishonoring ancestors.
Key findings
- 103 total tracked terms: 36 inherited verbatim from the Romans baseline (no change) and 69 newly load-bearing in 1 Corinthians (Section B of
translation_memory.json). - 56 terms require Human theologian review at every occurrence (13 Critical + 43 High), against 32 Medium-tier terms (native speaker review) and 15 Low-tier terms (automated review) — a markedly higher Critical/High concentration than Romans, reflecting the book’s dense collision surface.
- 27 doctrines tracked; 21 require Human theologian review (4 Critical + 17 High), 5 require native speaker review (Medium), and 1 is automated-only (Low) — see
doctrine_risk_registry.jsonrisk_summary. - Four Critical-risk doctrines carry the heaviest weight: The Resurrection of Christ, The Resurrection of Believers, Idolatry and Idol Food, and The Lord’s Supper. Three of these four (idol food, Lord’s Supper, and the resurrection-body contrast) have no direct Romans-baseline precedent — they are new Critical exposures introduced specifically by this curriculum.
- Full-book coverage confirmed: every one of 1 Corinthians’ 16 chapters contributes at least one load-bearing term or doctrine; none was silently skipped (see
11_doctrine_analysis.mdcoverage confirmation).
Risks
- Idol meat / idol food (Critical): “của cúng các hình tượng” uses the same verb (cúng) as near-universal Vietnamese ancestor and tutelary-spirit food offerings. This is the single highest real-world pastoral-stakes term in the curriculum — a mistranslation or an under-taught occurrence does not just confuse doctrine, it can misguide a believer’s actual conduct toward their own parents and relatives.
- The Lord’s Supper (Critical): sits structurally adjacent to giỗ/cúng cơm ancestral memorial meals. Without the mandatory contrastive teaching note at every occurrence, “Tiệc Thánh” risks being absorbed into an existing ritual category (feeding/honoring the dead) that is theologically opposite to its actual meaning (proclaiming Christ’s finished, once-for-all death, received by faith).
- The Resurrection of Christ and Believers (Critical): Vietnamese Buddhist rebirth vocabulary (luân hồi, đầu thai, kiếp) is productive and default; “sự sống lại” and the resurrection-body compounds must be actively fenced at every occurrence in chapter 15, not merely correctly translated once.
- Tongues and Discernment of Spirits (High): collide with active Vietnamese folk practices (hầu đồng spirit-possession trance, thầy cúng/đồng cốt mediumship) that share surface phenomenology with the biblical gifts while being theologically opposite (involuntary possession vs. self-controlled, Spirit-given gift).
- Church Discipline / Anathema (High): “giao cho Sa-tan” and “A-na-them” risk conflation with folk curse-formulas (bùa, ngải, trù ẻo) if rendered or taught informally.
- Love, Marriage/Singleness, Headship (High): three doctrines where the risk is not mistranslation but silent cultural substitution — Confucian hiếu, filial marriage-duty, and patriarchal headship assumptions are linguistically adjacent enough to displace Paul’s actual argument without any lexical error being detectable.
Opportunities
- The Romans baseline’s century of settled Protestant Bible vocabulary (Đức Chúa Trời, Đức Chúa Giê-xu, Đức Thánh Linh, sự cứu rỗi, ân điển) transfers directly and needs zero re-negotiation — 36 terms carry over with no new risk.
- 1 Corinthians’ concrete, situational content (a real church’s real problems) is pedagogically well-suited to the explicit “teaching note” model already established in the Romans package; the mandatory notes required here (idol food, Lord’s Supper, tongues, love) give Vietnamese teachers ready-made bridge material rather than requiring them to invent it.
- Several genuinely useful partial bridge-concepts exist and can be used pastorally with care: Jewish chesed and Buddhist từ bi/metta for love’s selfless character (ch. 13); Confucian tôn sư deference patterns for explaining (by contrast) Paul’s anti-factionalism argument (ch. 1, 3, 4); Catholic/Orthodox celibacy traditions for explaining (by partial analogy) Paul’s dignifying of singleness (ch. 7).
Recommended actions
- Load this package’s
translation_memory.jsonandbible_term_registry.jsonalongside — never instead of — the Romans baseline equivalents for every Phase 2 segment (per12_ai_translation_requirements.md). - Route all 21 Critical/High doctrines and all 56 Critical/High terms to mandatory human theologian review before publication; do not permit native-speaker-only sign-off for these tiers.
- Treat the four Critical doctrines (Resurrection of Christ, Resurrection of Believers, Idolatry and Idol Food, The Lord’s Supper) as requiring a dedicated theologian pass even after individual segments clear automated validation, given the cumulative teaching-note burden documented in
06_linguistic_gap_analysis.mdPart C. - Brief all reviewers on the four highest-collision Vietnamese cultural practices named throughout this package — thờ cúng tổ tiên (ancestor veneration/food offerings), giỗ/cúng cơm (memorial meals), hầu đồng (spirit-mediumship), and đạo hiếu (Confucian filial duty) — before Phase 2 review begins, so that collision points are recognized on sight rather than discovered mid-review.
- Carry forward the
12_ai_translation_requirements.mdescalation rules unmodified into any Phase 2 tooling configuration; confirm the tooling can enforce dual-file (Romans + 1 Corinthians) translation memory lookups without manual merging.
