Cross-Reference Analysis

09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Gospel of John

Methodology

This document satisfies PRD Phase 1 Step 3 for the John curriculum. It covers, chapter by chapter across the full book (John 1–21), every Old Testament quotation and allusion, records every messianic confession/title, maps John’s major typological structures, and cross-references every point of doctrinal or textual overlap with the Romans curriculum already governed by the baseline Language Package. Where a chapter contains no direct OT quotation/allusion, it is explicitly marked “reviewed — no direct OT citation” rather than silently omitted.

Citation format: Vietnamese Bible citation (English citation) — e.g., Giăng 3:16 (John 3:16), Sáng Thế Ký 15:6 (Genesis 15:6). Book names follow Bản Dịch Truyền Thống convention, extended per the table below for books newly relevant to John not already listed in the Romans baseline.

New book-name additions to the citation register (extending the Romans baseline’s book-name table):

PART A — OT Quotation and Allusion Matrix, Chapter by Chapter

PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Giăng 1:1 (John 1:1)Pre-existence of the Word; new creationNgôi Lời (the Word)Sáng Thế Ký 1:1 (Genesis 1:1) — “In the beginning…” deliberate echoCritical. Ngôi Lời must be read as the personal, pre-existent divine agent of creation, paralleling but exceeding Genesis 1:1’s impersonal “beginning”; teach the echo explicitly, since Vietnamese readers with low OT literacy may miss the deliberate structural quotation of the opening words of Scripture.
Giăng 1:14 (John 1:14)Glory, grace, and truth dwelling among God’s peopleNgôi Lời; Môi-se (implied)Xuất Ê-díp-tô Ký 33:18-34:7 (Exodus 33:18-34:7) — Moses’ request to see God’s glory, answered with “abounding in steadfast love (ân điển) and faithfulness (lẽ thật)”; also Xuất Ê-díp-tô Ký 25:8; 40:34 (tabernacle, God “dwelling” among Israel)High. The Greek ἐσκήνωσεν (“tabernacled,” rendered ở trong Vietnamese as simply “ở giữa chúng ta”) echoes the wilderness tabernacle; recommend a translator’s note connecting “đầy ơn và lẽ thật” to Exodus 34:6’s Hebrew hesed we’emet, so the phrase is not read as two generic virtues but as God’s self-revealed covenant character now embodied in Christ. This Exodus 33-34 background is directly shared with the Romans curriculum, since Rô-ma 9:15 (Romans 9:15) quotes Xuất Ê-díp-tô Ký 33:19 (Exodus 33:19, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy”). See Part D below for the rendering-consistency rule.
Giăng 1:23 (John 1:23)John the Baptist’s forerunner roleGiăng Báp-tít (John the Baptist)Ê-sai 40:3 (Isaiah 40:3), quoted directly — “voice of one crying in the wilderness”Medium. Direct quotation; render with the same formal quotation convention used for OT citations elsewhere in the curriculum (introduce with “như đã chép” or equivalent). No syncretism risk; requires OT background note for readers unfamiliar with Isaiah’s prophetic literature.
Giăng 1:29,36 (John 1:29,36)Lamb of God; substitutionary sacrificeGiăng Báp-tít; Đức Chúa Giê-xuXuất Ê-díp-tô Ký 12:1-13 (Exodus 12:1-13, Passover lamb); Sáng Thế Ký 22:8 (Genesis 22:8, “God will provide the lamb”); Ê-sai 53:7 (Isaiah 53:7, “led like a lamb to the slaughter”)High. Typological, not a direct quotation; requires cumulative OT teaching (Passover + Isaiah 53 Servant). Must be taught as a single, final, sufficient sacrifice — never as a repeated ritual offering (risk of drifting toward merit-repetition frameworks already forbidden in the Romans baseline’s grace entry).
Giăng 1:45,51 (John 1:45,51)Fulfillment of Moses and the prophets; Jacob’s visionPhi-líp; Na-tha-na-ên; Gia-cốp (implied)Sáng Thế Ký 28:10-17 (Genesis 28:10-17, Jacob’s ladder) — “you will see angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man”Medium. Typological allusion; Christ is presented as the true meeting-point of heaven and earth that Jacob’s ladder foreshadowed. Requires OT narrative background; no direct cultural collision.
Giăng 2:17 (John 2:17)Zeal for God’s houseĐức Chúa Giê-xuThi Thiên 69:9 (Psalm 69:9), quoted directly — “zeal for your house will consume me”Medium. Direct quotation. Psalm 69 is a shared quotation-source with the Romans curriculum — Rô-ma 11:9-10 (Romans 11:9-10) quotes Thi Thiên 69:22-23 (Psalm 69:22-23). See Part D for the consistency rule governing all Psalm 69 citations across both curricula.
Giăng 2:19-21 (John 2:19-21)Temple typology — Christ’s body as the true templeĐức Chúa Giê-xuImplicit fulfillment of the temple theology of I Các Vua 8 (1 Kings 8) and prophetic anticipation in Ê-xê-chi-ên 43 (Ezekiel 43, God’s glory returning to the temple)Medium. No direct quotation; a structural typology. See Part C (Typology Table) below.
Giăng 3:14 (John 3:14)Bronze serpent; the necessity of the crossMôi-se (Moses)Dân Số Ký 21:4-9 (Numbers 21:4-9), directly narrated typological referenceCritical. See full treatment in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md §John 3:14. The typology (looking = believing; the raised serpent = the raised Christ) must be preserved intact; do not let “lifted up” collapse into abstract exaltation without the physical, shameful sense carried by the serpent-on-a-pole image.
Giăng 3:16 (John 3:16)God’s initiating, sacrificial love for a rebellious worldĐức Chúa Trời; Con mộtNo single direct OT quotation, but summarizes covenant-love (Hebrew hesed) themes of Xuất Ê-díp-tô Ký 34:6 (Exodus 34:6) and Ô-sê 11:1 (Hosea 11:1, God’s fatherly love for Israel)Critical. See Part D for the direct doctrinal parallel to Rô-ma 5:8 (Romans 5:8) and Rô-ma 8:32 (Romans 8:32); the same self-giving love that gives “his own Son” is asserted in both books using different but theologically identical structures.
Giăng 3:36 (John 3:36)Wrath of God against unbelief(unnamed) — “whoever does not obey the Son”Thematic connection to Thi Thiên 2:12 (Psalm 2:12, “kiss the Son, lest he be angry”)High. Directly parallels Rô-ma 1:18 (Romans 1:18), “the wrath of God is revealed.” See Part D.
Giăng 4:5-6 (John 4:5-6)Jacob’s well; living water typologyGia-cốp (implied); người phụ nữ Sa-ma-riSáng Thế Ký 33:19 (Genesis 33:19) — background narrative of Jacob’s purchase of the land/wellLow. Historical-geographical allusion; minimal doctrinal weight but useful OT-background teaching point.
Giăng 4:10-14; 7:37-39 (John 4:10-14; 7:37-39)Living water = the SpiritĐức Chúa Giê-xuÊ-sai 55:1 (Isaiah 55:1, “come to the waters”); Xa-cha-ri 14:8 (Zechariah 14:8, living waters flowing from Jerusalem)Medium. Typological/thematic fulfillment; requires OT background. See Part C.
Giăng 5:39,45-46 (John 5:39,45-46)Moses and the Scriptures testify to ChristĐức Chúa Giê-xu; Môi-seGeneral reference to the Torah/Pentateuch as a unified messianic witnessHigh. Central to the “Fulfillment of Prophecy” doctrine already flagged Medium in the Romans baseline; here elevated because Jesus makes the Scriptures’ unified testimony to himself an explicit truth-claim underlying the whole Gospel’s purpose (cf. Giăng 20:31).
Giăng 6:14; 7:40 (John 6:14; 7:40)“The Prophet” — messianic expectationCrowdPhục Truyền Luật Lệ Ký 18:15,18 (Deuteronomy 18:15,18) — the promised prophet like MosesHigh. Direct messianic-title allusion; requires OT background teaching. Do not conflate with the generic “tiên tri” (prophet) category used elsewhere — here it is a specific, singular, awaited eschatological figure fulfilled in Christ.
Giăng 6:31,49 (John 6:31,49)Manna in the wildernessMôi-se (implied); Đức Chúa Giê-xuXuất Ê-díp-tô Ký 16:4,15 (Exodus 16:4,15); Thi Thiên 78:24 (Psalm 78:24), quoted/paraphrased — “he gave them bread from heaven to eat”High. Direct typological fulfillment structuring the entire Bread of Life discourse (ch. 6). See Part C.
Giăng 6:45 (John 6:45)Being taught by GodĐức Chúa Giê-xuÊ-sai 54:13 (Isaiah 54:13), quoted directly — “they shall all be taught by God”Medium. Direct quotation; ties the New Birth/regeneration doctrine to OT new-covenant promise language (cf. Giê-rê-mi 31:33-34, Jeremiah 31:33-34, not directly quoted but thematically present).
Giăng 7:42 (John 7:42)Davidic, Bethlehem birth expectationCrowd (disputing)Mi-chê 5:2 (Micah 5:2); II Sa-mu-ên 7:12 (2 Samuel 7:12)Medium. Direct link to the “Davidic Covenant” doctrine already established in the Romans baseline (seed_of_david entry, dòng dõi Đa-vít). Note the narrative irony: the crowd’s objection (“does the Christ come from Galilee?”) is factually mistaken about Jesus’ actual birthplace, which the reader/John assumes is already known from Matthew/Luke’s birth narratives.
Giăng 8:12; 9:5 (John 8:12; 9:5)Light to the nationsĐức Chúa Giê-xuÊ-sai 9:2 (Isaiah 9:2); Ê-sai 42:6; 49:6 (Isaiah 42:6; 49:6, “a light for the nations”)High. Messianic Servant-of-the-Lord background; connects directly to the Romans baseline’s “mission to the nations” and “gentiles” (dân ngoại) doctrines — Christ as light-to-the-nations fulfills the Isaianic Servant songs that also undergird Rô-ma 15:8-12 (Romans 15:8-12).
Giăng 8:17 (John 8:17)Legal validity of testimonyĐức Chúa Giê-xuPhục Truyền Luật Lệ Ký 19:15 (Deuteronomy 19:15) — “the testimony of two witnesses is true”Low. Direct legal-background citation; no syncretism risk.
Giăng 8:56-58 (John 8:56-58)Abraham’s anticipation of Christ; Christ’s eternal pre-existenceÁp-ra-ham; Đức Chúa Giê-xuSáng Thế Ký 12:1-3; 15:6; 17:17 (Genesis 12:1-3; 15:6; 17:17) — Abraham’s faith and joy in God’s promisesCritical. Directly ties Christ’s absolute “Ta là” (Ἐγώ εἰμι) self-identification (Xuất Ê-díp-tô Ký 3:14, Exodus 3:14) to the same Abraham whose faith is the central exhibit of Rô-ma 4 (Romans 4) and whose crediting of righteousness is anchored in the baseline’s “imputed_righteousness” entry (quoting Sáng Thế Ký 15:6, Genesis 15:6). See Part D.
Giăng 10:11,14 (John 10:11,14)The Good ShepherdĐức Chúa Giê-xuÊ-xê-chi-ên 34:11-16,23 (Ezekiel 34:11-16,23); Thi Thiên 23 (Psalm 23)High. Major OT shepherd typology — God himself, and the Davidic shepherd-king, fulfilled in Christ. See Part C.
Giăng 10:34 (John 10:34)“You are gods” — a fortiori argument for Christ’s deity claimĐức Chúa Giê-xu (responding to accusers)Thi Thiên 82:6 (Psalm 82:6), quoted directlyHigh. A frequently misapplied verse (sometimes cited to relativize Christ’s deity claim); the translator’s note must clarify Jesus’ argument is a fortiori (if mere human judges could be called “gods” in a derivative, functional sense, how much more the one truly “sent” and “consecrated” by the Father) — not a claim that all people are ontologically divine. Flag for human theologian review given its proximity to Giăng 10:30 (John 10:30), the Critical “Unity of the Father and the Son” anchor verse.
Giăng 12:13,15 (John 12:13,15)Triumphal entry — messianic kingshipCrowd; Đức Chúa Giê-xuThi Thiên 118:25-26 (Psalm 118:25-26, “Hosanna… blessed is he who comes”); Xa-cha-ri 9:9 (Zechariah 9:9, king entering on a donkey)High. Messianic kingship fulfillment; must be taught with the Romans-baseline caution (kingdom_of_god entry) that Christ’s kingship, though royally announced here, is not a political/nationalist claim (cf. Giăng 18:36, John 18:36).
Giăng 12:38 (John 12:38)Unbelief despite signsNarrator (citing Isaiah)Ê-sai 53:1 (Isaiah 53:1), quoted directly — “Lord, who has believed our report?”CRITICAL — shared quotation with Romans. Rô-ma 10:16 (Romans 10:16) quotes this exact same verse, Ê-sai 53:1 (Isaiah 53:1), in an argument about Israel’s unbelief in the gospel message. This is the single most important shared-quotation case in this cross-reference analysis. See Part D/E below for the mandatory rendering-consistency rule: the Vietnamese wording of this OT quotation must be verbatim identical in both the John and Romans curricula.
Giăng 12:39-40 (John 12:39-40)Judicial blinding of unbelieversNarrator (citing Isaiah)Ê-sai 6:10 (Isaiah 6:10), quoted directly — “he has blinded their eyes…”High. Direct quotation; reinforces the “Judgment and Belief/Unbelief” doctrine’s sobering claim that persistent unbelief can result in God’s own judicial hardening — parallel concept to Rô-ma 11:8 (Romans 11:8), which quotes the same underlying OT hardening-motif (via Ê-sai 29:10, Isaiah 29:10, and Phục Truyền Luật Lệ Ký 29:4, Deuteronomy 29:4). Flag for human theologian review; must not be softened into a merely circumstantial “they happened not to see,” obscuring the judicial character of the hardening.
Giăng 13:18 (John 13:18)Betrayal foretoldNarrator; Giu-đa (Judas)Thi Thiên 41:9 (Psalm 41:9), quoted directly — “he who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me”Medium. Direct quotation; typological/prophetic fulfillment of betrayal by an intimate.
Giăng 15:1,5 (John 15:1,5)The True VineĐức Chúa Giê-xuÊ-sai 5:1-7 (Isaiah 5:1-7); Thi Thiên 80:8-16 (Psalm 80:8-16); Giê-rê-mi 2:21 (Jeremiah 2:21) — Israel as God’s (often unfruitful) vineHigh. Major OT corporate-Israel typology now fulfilled/relocated in Christ himself as the true, fruitful vine, with believers grafted in as branches. See Part C, and note the conceptual (not textual) parallel to Rô-ma 11:17-24 (Romans 11:17-24)‘s olive-tree imagery — both use a cultivated-plant metaphor for covenant inclusion, though the plant differs (vine vs. olive tree); do not conflate the two images when cross-referencing.
Giăng 15:25 (John 15:25)Hatred without causeNarrator (citing a Psalm)Thi Thiên 35:19; 69:4 (Psalm 35:19; 69:4), quoted directly — “they hated me without a cause”Medium. Direct quotation; another Psalm 69 occurrence — see Part D/E Psalm 69 consistency rule.
Giăng 19:24 (John 19:24)Casting lots for Christ’s garmentsNarrator (citing a Psalm); Roman soldiersThi Thiên 22:18 (Psalm 22:18), quoted directlyHigh. Direct fulfillment quotation from the great Suffering-Servant psalm; theologically bound to the Substitutionary Death doctrine. Psalm 22 is also foundational background (though not directly quoted) to Rô-ma 8:31-39 (Romans 8:31-39)‘s assurance passage; note the thematic resonance without claiming a direct textual citation link there.
Giăng 19:28 (John 19:28)Christ’s thirst on the crossNarrator; Đức Chúa Giê-xuThi Thiên 69:21 (Psalm 69:21), quoted/echoed directlyMedium. Another Psalm 69 occurrence — see Part D/E.
Giăng 19:36 (John 19:36)No bone broken — the true Passover LambNarratorXuất Ê-díp-tô Ký 12:46 (Exodus 12:46); Dân Số Ký 9:12 (Numbers 9:12)Critical. Direct fulfillment quotation confirming the Passover-Lamb typology launched at Giăng 1:29 (John 1:29); ties Christ’s death explicitly to the Exodus deliverance narrative that also undergirds Rô-ma 3:25 (Romans 3:25)‘s propitiation language. Flag for human theologian review given its role anchoring the Substitutionary Death doctrine’s OT typological basis.
Giăng 19:37 (John 19:37)The pierced oneNarratorXa-cha-ri 12:10 (Zechariah 12:10), quoted directly — “they will look on him whom they have pierced”High. Direct fulfillment quotation; messianic/eschatological (also reused in Khải Huyền 1:7, Revelation 1:7, outside this curriculum’s scope but worth a forward-looking teaching note).

Chapters reviewed with no direct OT quotation or allusion requiring separate tabulation: Chapters 16, 17, 20, and 21 contain no direct Old Testament quotation formula (though ch. 17 draws typologically on the high-priestly office — see Part C) and are reviewed and confirmed as relying on the OT background already tabulated in earlier chapters (e.g., the Passover/Lamb typology culminating in ch. 19, the Shepherd typology of ch. 10 echoed in ch. 21’s “feed my sheep”). Chapter 11 (Lazarus) similarly contains no direct OT citation formula, but its resurrection claim structurally fulfills the general-resurrection hope voiced in Ê-sai 26:19 (Isaiah 26:19) and Đa-ni-ên 12:2 (Daniel 12:2), noted here for completeness though these are allusive rather than quoted.

Rendering-consistency rule: Every occurrence of “Đấng Christ” (Christ, the title) and “Con Đức Chúa Trời” (Son of God) across this confession table must match the exact baseline forms already fixed in translation_memory.json and reaffirmed in analysis/08_core_glossary.md Section A. No confession statement above may introduce a variant phrase (e.g., “Đấng được xức dầu” for Christ, or “con của Đức Chúa Trời” lowercase) even where the underlying Greek varies slightly in word order.

PART C — Typological Structures Table

Type (OT)Antitype (John)Key PassagesDoctrine ServedTranslation Sensitivity
Passover lamb (Xuất Ê-díp-tô Ký 12, Exodus 12)Lamb of GodGiăng 1:29,36; 19:14,31-36 (John 1:29,36; 19:14,31-36)Christ’s Substitutionary DeathCritical. Must be taught as a single, final, once-for-all sacrifice fulfilling and ending the OT sacrificial pattern, not initiating a new repeatable ritual.
Bronze serpent (Dân Số Ký 21:4-9, Numbers 21:4-9)The Son of Man lifted upGiăng 3:14-15; 12:32-33 (John 3:14-15; 12:32-33)Christ’s Substitutionary Death; Eternal Life through FaithCritical. The healing-by-looking pattern maps to salvation-by-believing; “lifted up” must retain both the literal, shameful crucifixion sense and the glorification sense.
Manna from heaven (Xuất Ê-díp-tô Ký 16, Exodus 16)Bread of LifeGiăng 6:31-58 (John 6:31-58)Eternal Life through FaithHigh. Christ as living bread supersedes the temporary, perishable manna; must not be reduced to a mere teaching/wisdom metaphor.
Tabernacle/Temple, God’s dwelling among his people (Xuất Ê-díp-tô Ký 25-40; I Các Vua 8, Exodus 25-40; 1 Kings 8)The Word became flesh; Christ’s body as the true templeGiăng 1:14; 2:19-21 (John 1:14; 2:19-21)Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; Christ’s Substitutionary DeathCritical. God’s presence formerly localized in a building is now localized in a person; do not let “đền thờ” readings default to a merely architectural sense at 2:19-21.
Shepherd-King of Israel (Ê-xê-chi-ên 34; Thi Thiên 23, Ezekiel 34; Psalm 23)The Good ShepherdGiăng 10:1-18; 21:15-17 (John 10:1-18; 21:15-17)Christ’s Substitutionary Death; Church as God’s People (Romans baseline doctrine, applied)High. The shepherd “lays down his life for the sheep” — a substitutionary, not merely custodial, shepherding; carried forward into Peter’s delegated pastoral commission in ch. 21.
Israel as God’s vine (Ê-sai 5; Thi Thiên 80; Giê-rê-mi 2:21, Isaiah 5; Psalm 80; Jeremiah 2:21)The True VineGiăng 15:1-8 (John 15:1-8)Union with Christ; parallels Romans’ olive-tree unity imagery (Rô-ma 11:17-24, Romans 11:17-24) without being textually identicalHigh. OT Israel’s vine repeatedly failed to bear fruit (judgment oracles); Christ is the vine that does not fail — fruitfulness is now relocated to abiding branches, i.e., believers united to him.
High Priest’s intercessory role (Xuất Ê-díp-tô Ký 28; Lê-vi Ký 16, Exodus 28; Leviticus 16)Christ’s high-priestly prayerGiăng 17 (John 17)Prayer and Intercession (Romans baseline doctrine); Unity of the Father and the SonCritical. Christ prays as the one who both offers and embodies the sacrifice — an intercessory pattern that must not be assimilated to the Romans-baseline-forbidden model of petitioning a deceased ancestor; Christ’s intercession here is that of the living, eternal Son, praying in unbroken unity with the Father he is about to glorify through death.
Jacob’s ladder (Sáng Thế Ký 28:12, Genesis 28:12)The Son of Man, meeting-point of heaven and earthGiăng 1:51 (John 1:51)Deity and Pre-existence of ChristMedium. Structural allusion; requires OT narrative background for first-generation believers.

PART D — Cross-Curriculum Doctrinal Parallels: John and Romans

The following table records every point at which a John passage and a Romans passage independently teach the same doctrine, so that Phase 2 translators preserve conceptual (though not necessarily verbatim) consistency between the two curricula’s Vietnamese renderings.

John PassageRomans PassageShared DoctrineRendering-Consistency Note
Giăng 1:12-13 (John 1:12-13)Rô-ma 8:14-17 (Romans 8:14-17)Adoption/new birth into God’s familyJohn’s “con cái Đức Chúa Trời” (children of God, τέκνα) and Romans’ “sự làm con nuôi” (adoption, υἱοθεσία) describe overlapping but distinct legal/relational images (birth vs. adoption); do not merge the two Vietnamese terms into one — teach them as complementary metaphors for the same underlying reality of grace-based inclusion in God’s family, following the baseline’s caution against a Confucian filial-hierarchy reading of either.
Giăng 1:14 (John 1:14)Rô-ma 1:3 (Romans 1:3)The IncarnationBoth anchor Christ’s genuine humanity (John: “trở nên xác thịt”; Romans: “dòng dõi Đa-vít… theo xác thịt”). Reuse Ngôi Lời trở nên xác thịt (baseline) at Giăng 1:14 exactly; do not substitute Romans’ more genealogical phrasing into John’s ontological claim, or vice versa.
Giăng 3:3-8 (John 3:3-8)Rô-ma 6:4 (Romans 6:4)New life/newness of lifeJohn’s “được sinh lại” (new birth, an act of God) and Romans’ “sự sống mới” (newness of life, resulting from union with Christ’s death/resurrection) describe the same regenerate life from two angles (its origin vs. its ongoing shape); keep both Vietnamese phrasings distinct as recorded, cross-referenced by a teaching note, not merged into a single term.
Giăng 3:16 (John 3:16)Rô-ma 5:8 (Romans 5:8); Rô-ma 8:32 (Romans 8:32)God’s initiating love, demonstrated by giving his SonRô-ma 5:8’s “Đức Chúa Trời tỏ lòng yêu thương” and Giăng 3:16’s “Đức Chúa Trời yêu thương thế gian” must both use yêu thương (established rendering of ἀγαπάω); do not vary the verb between the two curricula.
Giăng 3:18,36 (John 3:18,36)Rô-ma 1:18 (Romans 1:18); Rô-ma 8:1 (Romans 8:1)Present-tense wrath/condemnation vs. no condemnation in ChristThe paired realities (condemnation now resting on unbelief; no condemnation for those in Christ) must use the same verb đoán xét/lên án family consistently across both curricula so a reader tracing the theme between John and Romans study materials recognizes the shared vocabulary.
Giăng 5:24 (John 5:24)Rô-ma 6:13 (Romans 6:13)Passing from death to lifeBoth describe a decisive transfer of status; recommend the same verb-phrase “từ sự chết qua sự sống” wherever this transfer is described in either curriculum.
Giăng 5:29 (John 5:29)Rô-ma 2:6-11 (Romans 2:6-11)Final resurrection unto life or judgmentBoth texts describe a two-destiny final resurrection; sự sống lại (baseline Critical term) must be used identically in both; the double-destiny framing must remain explicit in both curricula’s teaching notes.
Giăng 8:34-36 (John 8:34-36)Rô-ma 6:16-22 (Romans 6:16-22)Slavery to sin vs. freedom in ChristBoth use the slave/free contrast (δοῦλος); recommend “làm tôi mọi cho tội lỗi” (Romans-style, if already used in Romans curriculum materials) matched consistently with John’s “tôi mọi của tội lỗi” so the same conceptual pair (slavery to sin / freedom in Christ, not self-attained enlightenment) reads identically across both books.
Giăng 8:56-58 (John 8:56-58)Rô-ma 4:1-25 (Romans 4:1-25)Abraham’s faith; Christ’s eternal pre-existence exceeding AbrahamÁp-ra-ham (established baseline form) must be used identically; the Genesis 15:6 imputed-righteousness background underlying Romans 4 should be cross-referenced (not re-derived) when John 8’s Abraham material is taught.
Giăng 9:1-3 (John 9:1-3)Rô-ma 8:28 (Romans 8:28) (conceptually; via the baseline’s “providence” entry)God’s sovereign providential purpose in sufferingBoth affirm that apparent misfortune serves God’s purposes; use sự quan phòng của Đức Chúa Trời (baseline term) consistently if this doctrine is invoked in John curriculum teaching materials.
Giăng 10:16 (John 10:16)Rô-ma 11:17-24 (Romans 11:17-24)Gentile inclusion into God’s one peopleDistinct images (one flock/one shepherd vs. grafted olive branches) teaching the same doctrine (Unity of Jews and Gentiles, already Medium risk in the baseline); do not conflate the vine/flock/olive-tree images when cross-referencing — note them as parallel, not identical, metaphors.
Giăng 11:25 (John 11:25)Rô-ma 6:4-5; 8:11 (Romans 6:4-5; 8:11)Resurrection life united to Christsự sống lại (baseline Critical term) and sự sống (life) must both be used identically; John’s personal claim (“I am the resurrection”) should be taught as the personal ground of Romans’ more corporate/applied resurrection-life language.
Giăng 14:6 (John 14:6)Rô-ma 10:9-13 (Romans 10:9-13)Exclusive means of access to God/salvationBoth assert salvation is found only through Christ (John: “chẳng bởi ta thì không ai được đến cùng Cha”; Romans: confessing “Đức Chúa Giê-xu là Chúa”). The exclusivity clause must never be softened in either curriculum’s rendering.
Giăng 14:16-17,26; 16:7-15 (John 14:16-17,26; 16:7-15)Rô-ma 8:26-27 (Romans 8:26-27)The Holy Spirit’s personal, helping ministry to believersBoth describe the Spirit’s active, personal help (John: Đấng An Ủi interceding/teaching/convicting; Romans: the Spirit’s groaning intercession). Đức Thánh Linh (baseline) must anchor both; both curricula must carry the Critical-risk warning against modeling the Spirit’s work on ancestor-spirit consultation or mediumship.
Giăng 15:13 (John 15:13)Rô-ma 5:6-8 (Romans 5:6-8)Christ’s self-giving death for othersBoth describe voluntary, substitutionary death motivated by love; recommend consistent phrasing for “laid down his life”/“died for us” (phó sự sống mình / chịu chết vì) across both curricula’s teaching materials.
Giăng 16:8 (John 16:8)Rô-ma 3:19-20 (Romans 3:19-20)The Law/Spirit exposing sinJohn’s Spirit-conviction ministry (cáo trách) and Romans’ law-exposing-sin argument serve the same underlying truth (that sin is made visible/undeniable before God) via different agents (Spirit vs. Law); keep the distinction clear in teaching notes — do not present the Spirit’s convicting work in John as simply “the Law” relocated into the NT era.
Giăng 16:33 (John 16:33)Rô-ma 8:37 (Romans 8:37)Victory/overcoming through ChristRecommend a shared translator’s note connecting “ta đã thắng thế gian rồi” (John) with “đều thắng hơn bội phần” (more than conquerors, Romans) as two expressions of the same assurance doctrine.
Giăng 17:21-23 (John 17:21-23)(no single direct Romans parallel; conceptually resonant with Rô-ma 12:4-5, Romans 12:4-5, one body)Unity of believers patterned on Father-Son unityFlag as a distinctive Johannine contribution not independently anchored in Romans; do not force an artificial verbatim-consistency rule here, but note the conceptual resonance with “one body” language for curriculum designers building thematic bridges between the two books.
Giăng 19:30 (John 19:30)Rô-ma 3:25; 5:1 (Romans 3:25; 5:1)The finished, sufficient atoning work”Được trọn rồi” (It is finished) and Romans’ propitiation/justification language both assert a completed, non-repeatable saving work; teaching materials for both curricula should cross-reference this shared “finished work” emphasis explicitly, reinforcing the Romans baseline’s rejection of công đức (accumulated merit) as any kind of supplement.
Giăng 20:31 (John 20:31)Rô-ma 1:16-17 (Romans 1:16-17)Programmatic thesis statement of the bookBoth verses are each their book’s stated purpose/thesis. Per the Romans baseline’s Theological Consistency Rules, treat Giăng 20:31 with the same “must be identical across every document” status already assigned to Rô-ma 1:16-17.

PART E — Shared Old Testament Quotations: Mandatory Rendering-Consistency Rules

The following Old Testament passages are quoted or clearly alluded to by both the Gospel of John and the Book of Romans. Because both curricula share the same Vietnamese-language learner base, the Vietnamese wording of these OT quotations must be verbatim identical wherever they occur in either curriculum’s Phase 2 output, regardless of which New Testament book is being translated at the time.

OT SourceQuoted/Echoed in JohnQuoted/Echoed in RomansRule
Ê-sai 53:1 (Isaiah 53:1)Giăng 12:38 (John 12:38)Rô-ma 10:16 (Romans 10:16)Mandatory verbatim match. Both are direct quotations of the identical Hebrew/LXX verse (“Lord, who has believed our report?”). The Vietnamese rendering fixed for Romans 10:16 in Phase 2 output MUST be reused character-for-character at John 12:38. Any deviation must be flagged for human theologian review before acceptance.
Thi Thiên 69 (Psalm 69), multiple versesGiăng 2:17 (v.9); 15:25 (v.4); 19:28 (v.21) (John 2:17; 15:25; 19:28)Rô-ma 11:9-10 (v.22-23) (Romans 11:9-10)Consistent Psalm-numbering and diction rule. Though different verses of the same psalm are quoted in each book, translators must use one single, fixed Vietnamese rendering of Thi Thiên throughout (never varying “Thi Thiên” with an alternative like “Thánh Vịnh”), and should consult the Romans-curriculum rendering of Psalm 69 phraseology already fixed in Phase 2 output before rendering any new Psalm 69 verse in John, to preserve stylistic and lexical continuity for readers encountering both books.
Xuất Ê-díp-tô Ký 33-34 (Exodus 33-34)Giăng 1:14,17 (allusion: “grace and truth”) (John 1:14,17)Rô-ma 9:15 (direct quotation of Exodus 33:19) (Romans 9:15)Consistency of theological background note, not verbatim text (since John alludes rather than quotes). Both curricula’s teaching notes should draw on the same Exodus 33-34 background material (God’s self-revealed covenant character to Moses) so that a learner moving between the two curricula recognizes the shared OT root rather than encountering two unrelated explanations of “ân điển và lẽ thật” versus “sự thương xót.”
Sáng Thế Ký 15:6 (Genesis 15:6)Not directly quoted in John, but Áp-ra-ham’s faith is invoked at Giăng 8:56 (John 8:56)Rô-ma 4:3 (direct quotation) (Romans 4:3)Consistency of proper-name and doctrinal framing only. Áp-ra-ham (baseline form) must be used identically; when John 8’s Abraham material is taught, cross-reference (rather than re-derive) the imputed-righteousness doctrine already fully established via Romans 4’s direct quotation of this verse.
Đa-ni-ên 7:13-14 (Daniel 7:13-14)Background for “Son of Man” title throughout John (e.g., Giăng 1:51; 3:13-14; 5:27; 12:23)No direct Romans quotation, but conceptually present in Rô-ma 14:9-11 (Romans 14:9-11, Christ’s universal lordship/judgment)Background-consistency note only (no shared direct quotation). Ensure “Con người” (Son of Man, established rendering) is never confused with the baseline’s generic “loài người” (mankind); the Danielic exalted-judge background should be taught identically wherever the title recurs in either curriculum’s supplementary material.

Enforcement instruction for Phase 2: Before translating any OT quotation identified above, the AI translation system must check whether the same verse has already been rendered in the Romans curriculum’s completed output. If so, the existing Romans rendering must be loaded and reused verbatim (Ê-sai 53:1 case) or used as the required stylistic reference point (Psalm 69, Exodus 33-34, Genesis 15:6, Daniel 7:13-14 cases). This rule extends the Romans baseline’s “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents” principle to cross-curriculum OT quotation handling.
