Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — 1 John (Chapters 1–5)
Purpose
This document maps every doctrine addressed anywhere in 1 John to (a) its supporting passages across the full letter, (b) its risk tier as fixed in doctrine_risk_registry.json, (c) the specific translation risk facing Vietnamese renderings, and (d) the review routing this triggers in Phase 2. Risk tiers and review routing here are load-bearing and must not be altered independently of the registry; any change requires a registry version increment.
Eight curriculum doctrine headings were supplied for 1 John: God is Light and God is Love; Fellowship with God and One Another; Confession and Forgiveness of Sin; Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth; The Incarnation and Antichrist; Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life; Overcoming the World; Testing the Spirits. This analysis expands those eight into the 24 discrete doctrines already tracked in the registry, since several curriculum headings (e.g. “The Incarnation and Antichrist”) carry more than one distinct doctrinal claim requiring separate translation handling.
Chapter-by-Chapter Walkthrough
1 John 1 (1:1–10)
Establishes the letter’s epistemological and theological foundations: eyewitness testimony to the incarnate Word, fellowship as the purpose of proclamation, God’s nature as light, and the necessity and provision of confession.
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages (1 John) | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Incarnation and Humanity of Christ | 1:1-3 | Critical | ”Word of Life” (Lời của sự sống / Ngôi Lời) must echo the same Logos-Incarnation doctrine as Romans 1:3 and John 1:14; never hóa thân. Physical eyewitness verbs (“heard,” “seen,” “touched”) must be rendered concretely, not metaphorically, to resist a docetic reading. | Human theologian |
| Fellowship with God and One Another | 1:3 | Medium | Sự thông công must be shown as flowing from, not substituting for, fellowship with the Father and the Son; risk of flattening into generic social community language. | Native speaker review |
| God Is Light | 1:5 | Critical | Essential-nature predication (“God IS light”) must not be softened to “God has light” or reframed as an attainable enlightenment state (ánh sáng giác ngộ). | Human theologian |
| Walking in the Light: Christian Conduct | 1:6-7 | Medium | The “walk” metaphor is relational conduct in fellowship with God, not progress along a self-directed meditative path (tu tập). | Native speaker review |
| Confession and Forgiveness of Sin | 1:7-10 | High | Xưng tội risks a Catholic priest-mediated confession association (tòa giải tội); must be taught as direct, unmediated, ongoing confession to God. | Human theologian |
| Universal Human Sinfulness and Lawlessness | 1:8-10 | Medium | Tội lỗi must remain moral transgression against a personal God, never nghiệp xấu (impersonal karma). | Native speaker review |
1 John 2 (2:1–29)
Moves from confession to Christ’s advocacy, then to the ethical test of obedience and love, warnings about worldliness, the appearance of antichrists, the Spirit’s anointing, and the introduction of new-birth righteousness.
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages (1 John) | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Christ’s Advocacy and Intercession | 2:1 | Critical | Đấng cầu thay must never be modeled on cầu xin tổ tiên (petitioning a deceased ancestor at the family altar); Christ’s advocacy is grounded in his finished, unrepeatable atoning work before a living Father. | Human theologian |
| Propitiation / Atoning Sacrifice | 2:2 | Critical | Của lễ chuộc tội must be distinguished from repeatable ritual appeasement offerings (cúng tổ tiên, cúng cô hồn) or Buddhist merit-transfer offerings (làm phước); God’s own initiative, sufficient once for all. | Human theologian |
| Walking in the Light: Christian Conduct | 2:6, 2:9-11 | Medium | Same conduct-metaphor risk as chapter 1; “walking as he walked” is imitation grounded in relationship, not self-cultivation. | Native speaker review |
| Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth | 2:9-11 | High | Anh em must be extended to all believers in Christ without erasing genuine biological/clan loyalty (huyết thống, dòng họ) as a separate, still-honored category. | Human theologian |
| The Commandment to Love | 2:7-8 | Low | Điều răn is well-established, low-risk Vietnamese Bible vocabulary. | Automated review |
| Overcoming the World | 2:13-17 | High | Thắng/đắc thắng and thế gian must be kept grounded in faith and new birth, not self-cultivated willpower or moral discipline (tu thân); the “lust of the flesh/eyes, pride of life” triad is descriptive, not a call to ascetic renunciation as an end in itself. | Human theologian |
| Antichrist: Denial of Christ | 2:18-23 | Critical | Kẻ địch lại Đấng Christ must not collapse into a generic demon (ma quỷ) or folk demon-king figure; the specific doctrinal content — denial that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God — must remain explicit. | Human theologian |
| Anointing of the Spirit | 2:20, 2:27 | High | Sự xức dầu must be taught as universal to every believer, not a mark of an especially gifted leadership elite, and must be distinguished from folk-ritual anointing performed by a spirit medium. | Human theologian |
| Fellowship with God and One Another | 2:24, 2:27-28 | Medium | ”Abide” (ở trong / cứ ở trong) is relational, mutual indwelling, not Buddhist meditative self-cultivated dwelling (an trú). | Native speaker review |
| New Birth (Born of God) | 2:29 | Critical | ”Born of him” (được sinh bởi Đức Chúa Trời) must not be heard through the lens of luân hồi; one-time, non-repeatable spiritual begetting. | Human theologian |
1 John 3 (3:1–24)
Develops the family-of-God identity of believers, the ethical incompatibility of sin with the new nature, the concrete demand of sacrificial love, and confidence before God grounded in obedience and the Spirit.
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages (1 John) | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sonship and the Family of God | 3:1-2, 3:10 | High | Con cái Đức Chúa Trời must complement, not replace, baseline legal-adoption doctrine (sự làm con nuôi); must not collapse into Confucian hierarchical filial-duty framing (đạo hiếu) at the expense of grace-grounded intimacy. | Human theologian |
| New Birth (Born of God) | 3:9 | Critical | ”Seed of God” (hạt giống của Ngài) is a divine generative nature implanted at spiritual birth, not a bloodline claim parallel to “seed of David”; guard against reincarnation-adjacent readings. | Human theologian |
| Universal Human Sinfulness and Lawlessness | 3:4-9 | Medium | Sự trái luật pháp extends the general moral-law sense of luật pháp; not the specifically Mosaic ceremonial code. | Native speaker review |
| Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth | 3:10-17 | High | The Cain/Abel contrast and “laying down one’s life” must retain their force as concrete, costly, other-directed love, not softened into sentiment. | Human theologian |
| Practical Love in Deed and Truth | 3:16-18 | High | The “ought” (nên/phải yêu thương) is a grateful moral response to received love; must not be rendered through debt-repayment vocabulary (nợ) that risks an ơn nghĩa reciprocal-obligation framing. | Human theologian |
| Confidence before God | 3:19-21 | High | Sự dạn dĩ must be grounded in Christ’s finished work and God’s love, never a self-generated confidence built on accumulated good deeds. | Human theologian |
| The Commandment to Love | 3:23 | Low | Standard, low-risk vocabulary; faith and love named together as the content of God’s commandment. | Automated review |
| Testing the Spirits (background) | 3:24 | Critical | The Spirit given as the ground of assurance anticipates the ch. 4 test; must not be pre-emptively reframed as a felt experience verifiable by folk-ritual means. | Human theologian |
1 John 4 (4:1–21) — Core Passage
Contains the letter’s doctrinal core: the test of the spirits by confession of the incarnate Christ, and the extended meditation on God’s own nature as love, the sending of the Son as propitiation, and love for the brethren as the necessary fruit and evidence of that love received.
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages (1 John) | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Testing the Spirits | 4:1-6 | Critical | Thử các thần is doctrinal, Scripture- and confession-based discernment by the ordinary believer — the direct opposite of ritual spirit-consultation practices (gọi hồn, cầu cơ, hầu đồng, đồng bóng) still active in Vietnamese folk religion. This is the single highest collision-risk doctrine in the book for this destination language. | Human theologian |
| Incarnation and Humanity of Christ | 4:2-3 | Critical | ”Come in the flesh” is the confessional test itself; never hóa thân (a repeatable divine manifestation). | Human theologian |
| Antichrist: Denial of Christ | 4:3 | Critical | Same as 2:18-23; “spirit of antichrist” already active in the world, not confined to a future figure. | Human theologian |
| God Is Love | 4:8, 4:16, 4:7-21 | Critical | The identity statement “God IS love” (Đức Chúa Trời LÀ sự yêu thương) must not be demoted to “Đức Chúa Trời có lòng yêu thương” (a possessed attribute) nor conflated with từ bi (Buddhist compassion generated within the practitioner). This is the theological center of the entire curriculum’s core passage. | Human theologian |
| Propitiation / Atoning Sacrifice | 4:10 | Critical | God’s own initiative in sending the Son “to be the propitiation” — same doctrine as 2:2, restated as proof of love, not appeasement sought by humans. | Human theologian |
| New Birth (Born of God) | 4:7 | Critical | ”Everyone who loves is born of God” — love as evidence, not cause, of new birth; must not invert the causal order into a merit-earns-birth framing. | Human theologian |
| Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth | 4:7-8, 4:11, 4:20-21 | High | The core passage’s structural argument (God’s love received → love for brethren produced) must be preserved intact across the whole unit; love for an unseen God is tested by love for a seen brother. | Human theologian |
| Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | 4:14, 4:17 | Critical | ”Savior of the world” (Cứu Chúa) retains universal scope; assurance (“as he is, so are we in this world”) must not be reframed as merit-based confidence. | Human theologian |
| Confidence before God | 4:17-18 | High | Sự dạn dĩ at the judgment; “fear” (sự sợ hãi) as servile dread displaced by mature love must stay distinguishable from kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời (reverent fear), which is not being negated. | Human theologian |
| Practical Love in Deed and Truth | 4:11 | High | Same ought/debt risk as 3:16-18. | Human theologian |
1 John 5 (5:1–21)
Closes the letter with faith as the ground of overcoming the world, the threefold witness to Christ’s identity, assurance of eternal life, confidence in prayer, the difficult “sin unto death” passage, and a final warning against idols.
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages (1 John) | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Overcoming the World | 5:1-5 | High | ”Whatever is born of God overcomes the world… this is the victory, our faith” — victory must be shown as flowing from faith and new birth, not self-effort. | Human theologian |
| New Birth (Born of God) | 5:1, 5:4, 5:18 | Critical | Repeated perfect-tense “has been born of God” throughout ch. 5 must render consistently with 2:29, 3:9, 4:7; a fixed, completed, non-repeatable state. | Human theologian |
| Sonship and the Family of God | 5:2 | High | Con cái Đức Chúa Trời again; consistency check against 3:1-2. | Human theologian |
| The Threefold Witness: Spirit, Water, and Blood | 5:6-9 | High | Must not be prematurely reduced to a later sacramental (baptism/communion) reading alone; primary function is converging testimony to Christ’s true incarnate identity against docetic-leaning denial. Requires a teaching note at first occurrence. | Human theologian |
| Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | 5:10-13, 5:20 | Critical | Sự sống đời đời is a present, personal, relational possession received now in the Son — not an unending rebirth cycle (the opposite of the liberation a Buddhist practitioner seeks) nor a future merit-earned afterlife destination. | Human theologian |
| Confidence before God | 5:14 | High | Sự dạn dĩ in prayer; consistency with 3:21 and 4:17-18. | Human theologian |
| Sin unto Death | 5:16-17 | Medium | A genuinely debated phrase (tội đến nỗi chết); translators must not resolve the ambiguity by inventing a more specific doctrine than the source text states. | Native speaker review |
| Universal Human Sinfulness and Lawlessness | 5:17 | Medium | ”All unrighteousness is sin” — consistency with 1:8-10, 3:4-9. | Native speaker review |
| New Birth (Born of God) — protection | 5:18 | Critical | ”Whoever is born of God does not sin… he who is born of God keeps him” — the protective, ongoing-keeping sense must not be lost in translation compression. | Human theologian |
| Idolatry and Rival Worship | 5:21 | High | Hình tượng must preserve the doctrinal warning without the translation itself resolving its application to ancestor-altar practice (bàn thờ gia tiên) — a pastoral/theological application question, not a lexical one. | Human theologian |

Critical Risk Doctrines
God Is Light
Vietnamese name: Đức Chúa Trời Là Sự Sáng
Key terms: light, darkness, walk
Review routing: Human theologian
An essential-nature predication about God, parallel to ‘God is love.’ Collides with Buddhist ‘ánh sáng giác ngộ’ (light of enlightenment attained through practice) and folk esoteric light-attainment traditions; must be taught as God’s own unchanging moral nature revealed to humanity, not an inner state a person achieves.
God Is Love
Vietnamese name: Đức Chúa Trời Là Sự Yêu Thương
Key terms: love, God is love
Review routing: Human theologian
Essential-nature statement risking demotion to ‘Đức Chúa Trời có lòng yêu thương’ (a mere possessed attribute) or conflation with từ bi (Buddhist compassion generated within the practitioner rather than received from a personal God); the identity statement ‘God IS love’ must be retained without softening.
Propitiation / Atoning Sacrifice
Vietnamese name: Của Lễ Chuộc Tội
Key terms: propitiation, blood, advocate
Review routing: Human theologian
Must never be modeled on repeated ritual offerings made to appease ancestor spirits or local deities (cúng tổ tiên, cúng cô hồn) or Buddhist merit-transfer offerings (làm phước, hồi hướng công đức); this is God’s own initiative, an unrepeatable and fully sufficient sacrifice satisfying his own justice.
Christ’s Advocacy and Intercession
Vietnamese name: Sự Cầu Thay của Đấng Christ
Key terms: advocate, intercession
Review routing: Human theologian
Extends the baseline’s Critical flag on intercession exactly: Christ’s present advocacy before the Father, grounded in his finished atoning work, must never be modeled on cầu xin tổ tiên (petitioning a deceased ancestor for blessing/protection at the family altar), a central and frequent Vietnamese practice.
New Birth (Born of God)
Vietnamese name: Sự Sinh Lại bởi Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: born_of_god, seed_of_god, children_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Readers from a Buddhist background may hear ‘born of/begotten of God’ through the lens of luân hồi (reincarnation into a new existence). Must be explicitly taught as a one-time, non-repeatable spiritual begetting by a personal God producing a permanently new identity, not rebirth into another cycle of existence.
The Incarnation and Humanity of Christ
Vietnamese name: Sự Nhập Thể của Đấng Christ
Key terms: word_of_life, incarnation, christ_title
Review routing: Human theologian
Same Critical doctrine as the baseline’s Incarnation entry; 1 John 4:2-3 makes confessing that Jesus Christ has come ‘in the flesh’ the very test of true versus false spirits, never rendered through hóa thân (a bodhisattva’s or deity’s repeatable manifestation into a body).
Antichrist: Denial of Christ
Vietnamese name: Kẻ Địch Lại Đấng Christ
Key terms: antichrist, christ_title, son_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Must not be flattened into a generic evil spirit/demon (ma quỷ) or a mythological demon-king figure from folk cosmology; the specific doctrinal content — denial that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God come in the flesh — must remain explicit at every occurrence.
Testing the Spirits
Vietnamese name: Sự Thử Nghiệm Các Thần
Key terms: test_the_spirits, spirit_of_truth_and_error
Review routing: Human theologian
Direct and serious collision risk with Vietnamese folk-religious practice of consulting spirits through mediums (đồng bóng, hầu đồng) or calling ancestral/other spirits (gọi hồn, cầu cơ). 1 John’s instruction is a doctrinal, Scripture- and confession-based discernment exercise performed by the ordinary believer — the opposite of ritual spirit-consultation.
Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Vietnamese name: Sự Chắc Chắn của Sự Cứu Rỗi và Sự Sống Đời Đời
Key terms: eternal_life, confidence_boldness, testimony, savior
Review routing: Human theologian
‘Eternal life’ risks two Buddhist-adjacent misreadings: an unending cycle of rebirths (the opposite of the liberation from rebirth a Buddhist practitioner ultimately seeks) or a vague afterlife destination earned by accumulated merit. Must be taught as a present, personal, relational possession received now by faith in the Son, not a future reward accumulated through practice.
High Risk Doctrines
Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Vietnamese name: Sự Xưng Tội và Sự Tha Thứ
Key terms: confess, forgive, cleanse, blood, sin
Review routing: Human theologian
‘Xưng tội’ carries strong association with the Catholic sacrament of confession performed through a priest in a confessional booth (tòa giải tội); must be taught as direct, unmediated confession to God, an ongoing practice grounded in God’s faithfulness and Christ’s finished atoning work, not a merit-earning ritual.
Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Vietnamese name: Tình Yêu Thương Anh Em Là Dấu Hiệu của Sự Sinh Lại
Key terms: brother, love, born_of_god, ought
Review routing: Human theologian
‘Anh em’ must be taught as the new-covenant family bond among all believers in Christ, not limited to blood relatives (huyết thống) or clan members (dòng họ); risk of either erasing genuine family loyalty or failing to extend love beyond biological kin as the text requires.
Sonship and the Family of God
Vietnamese name: Địa Vị Con trong Gia Đình Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: children_of_god, adoption, father
Review routing: Human theologian
Complements without replacing the baseline’s legal-adoption doctrine (sự làm con nuôi); risk of collapsing the organic new-birth sonship of τέκνα θεοῦ into Confucian hierarchical filial-duty framing (đạo hiếu) rather than grace-grounded family intimacy.
Anointing of the Spirit
Vietnamese name: Sự Xức Dầu của Đức Thánh Linh
Key terms: anointing
Review routing: Human theologian
Vietnamese charismatic/Pentecostal usage sometimes applies ‘được xức dầu’ to a special class of especially gifted or authoritative leaders; 1 John teaches a universal possession of every believer, not a mark of a spiritual elite, and must be distinguished from folk-ritual anointing performed by a medium during spirit consultation.
Confidence before God
Vietnamese name: Sự Dạn Dĩ trước Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: confidence_boldness, fear
Review routing: Human theologian
Confidence/boldness must be grounded explicitly in Christ’s finished work and God’s love, never implying a self-generated confidence based on accumulated good deeds (colliding with Buddhist merit-accumulation thinking) or an uncertain hope contingent on an ongoing karmic ledger.
Overcoming the World
Vietnamese name: Sự Đắc Thắng Thế Gian
Key terms: overcome, world, lust_pride_triad
Review routing: Human theologian
κόσμος carries two distinct senses (humanity as object of God’s love, and the organized value-system opposed to the Father) that a single Vietnamese word ‘thế gian’ must carry; victory (thắng) must be kept grounded in faith and new birth, not self-cultivated willpower or moral discipline (tu thân), which would reframe the doctrine as self-achieved.
Practical Love in Deed and Truth
Vietnamese name: Yêu Thương bằng Việc Làm và Lẽ Thật
Key terms: love, ought, brother
Review routing: Human theologian
The ‘ought’ (ὀφείλομεν) language of moral obligation to love risks collision with Confucian ơn nghĩa (a favor creating a reciprocal debt requiring repayment), the same class of risk already flagged for grace in the baseline; must be rendered as a grateful moral response to received love, not a discharge of a reciprocal debt.
The Threefold Witness: Spirit, Water, and Blood
Vietnamese name: Ba Chứng Cớ: Thánh Linh, Nước, và Huyết
Key terms: water_and_blood, testimony, holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
Risk of premature reduction to later sacramental ritual (baptism/communion) alone, losing the passage’s primary function as converging testimony to Christ’s true incarnate identity against docetic-leaning denial; requires a teaching note at first occurrence.
Idolatry and Rival Worship
Vietnamese name: Sự Thờ Hình Tượng
Key terms: idols
Review routing: Human theologian
Many Vietnamese households maintain ancestor altars (bàn thờ gia tiên) understood by families as honoring deceased parents rather than worshipping a rival deity; the doctrinal warning must be preserved without the translation itself resolving how it applies to ancestor-veneration practice, a pastoral/theological application question requiring human theologian input.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Fellowship with God and One Another
Vietnamese name: Sự Thông Công với Đức Chúa Trời và với Nhau
Key terms: fellowship, abide, walk
Review routing: Native speaker review
Risk of flattening into generic social community-building language, losing the letter’s structure that horizontal fellowship among believers rests on prior vertical fellowship with the Father and the Son.
Universal Human Sinfulness and Lawlessness
Vietnamese name: Tội Lỗi và Sự Trái Luật Pháp của Mọi Người
Key terms: sin, lawlessness
Review routing: Native speaker review
Sin must be kept as moral transgression against a personal God, never nghiệp xấu (impersonal bad karma); comparatively low direct-collision risk beyond the term-level distinction already established in the baseline.
Walking in the Light: Christian Conduct
Vietnamese name: Bước Đi trong Sự Sáng
Key terms: walk, light, darkness
Review routing: Native speaker review
The walking metaphor should be kept as relational conduct lived out in fellowship with God, not reframed as progress along a self-directed moral or meditative path (con đường đạo, tu tập) toward personal attainment.
Sin unto Death
Vietnamese name: Tội Đến Nỗi Chết
Key terms: sin_unto_death
Review routing: Native speaker review
A genuinely debated phrase with multiple defensible interpretive options (e.g., a settled, final apostasy); translators should not resolve the ambiguity by inventing a more specific doctrine than the text itself states. Native speaker review with optional theologian consultation recommended.
Low Risk Doctrines
The Commandment to Love
Vietnamese name: Điều Răn Yêu Thương
Key terms: commandment, beloved
Review routing: Automated review
Standard, established Vietnamese Bible vocabulary (as in ‘Mười Điều Răn’); minimal syncretism risk.
