Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — 2 John (Full Book, Original Koine Greek)
Scope Note
2 John is a single-chapter letter of 13 verses. Per the PRD Phase 1 full-book-coverage mandate, this document treats every verse of the letter first to last: the core passage (1:4–11) receives full verse-by-verse treatment, and the salutation (1:1–3) and closing (1:12–13) — which together constitute the remainder of the book’s single chapter — receive the same term-by-term treatment under a “Chapter 1: Remaining Verses” heading. No verse is silently omitted. Where a verse repeats a term already treated, that repetition is noted rather than re-analyzed in full.
Author: traditionally John the Apostle (“the elder,” ὁ πρεσβύτερος), writing to “the elect lady and her children” — read by most interpreters either as a named individual and her household or as a personification of a local church and its members (“sister” congregations in 1:13).
Relationship to the baseline Romans Language Package: 2 John shares core Johannine-and-Pauline vocabulary with Romans (grace, peace, Father, Jesus, God, fellowship) and these MUST reuse the baseline translation_memory.json renderings exactly. 2 John also introduces vocabulary absent from the Romans set (truth as a standalone theological term, love as a standalone theological term, deceiver, antichrist, confess, teaching/doctrine of Christ, abide, mercy) which this analysis defines for the first time and which must be added to translation memory before Phase 2 processing.
CORE PASSAGE: 2 John 1:4–11 (Verse-by-Verse)
2 John 1:4
Gloss: “I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, just as we received commandment from the Father.”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| walking | περιπατοῦντας (περιπατέω) | peripatountas (peripateō) | “to walk about, tread” | Literal ambulation; frequent NT metaphor for habitual conduct/lifestyle | walking, living, conducting oneself | Not a single act but an ongoing, visible pattern of life consistent with truth — the letter’s governing metaphor (also vv.6 twice) | “đi theo” / “sống theo” (bước đi trong) — Medium risk. Vietnamese Bible tradition uses “bước đi trong lẽ thật” (to walk/tread in truth) as an established idiom; must not be flattened to a one-time “believing” act. Consistent with Romans register (cf. “walk” imagery not in Romans TM but idiom-compatible). |
| truth | ἀληθείᾳ (ἀλήθεια) | alētheia | ”unhiddenness, that which is not concealed” | Factual accuracy; also, in John’s writings, God’s revealed reality and moral/relational faithfulness embodied in Christ | truth, faithfulness, reality | The governing theme of 2 John (occurs 5x in 13 verses): not abstract propositional accuracy alone but the revealed reality of who Christ is and how his people must live | ”lẽ thật” — High risk (NEW TERM, add to TM). “Lẽ thật” is the established 1926 Vietnamese Protestant Bible term (cf. John 14:6). Must NOT be rendered “chân lý,” which in Vietnamese carries strong Buddhist philosophical connotations (the Buddha’s realized insight into reality, the Four Noble Truths — Tứ Diệu Đế) and could reframe “lẽ thật” as one impersonal philosophical realization among others rather than the personal, revealed reality of Christ. Must also not be flattened to “sự thật” (mere factual/secular truth), which loses the covenantal-relational weight. |
| commandment | ἐντολὴν (ἐντολή) | entolēn | ”an injunction, charge, order” | A specific directive; in Johannine usage, frequently Christ’s/the Father’s authoritative command to love | commandment, instruction, charge | Grounds ethical “walking in truth” in a command received FROM the Father, not self-generated ethics | ”điều truyền dạy” / “mệnh lệnh” — Medium risk. Recommend “điều truyền dạy” or simply “mạng lệnh,” consistent register with baseline’s “obedience of faith” (sự vâng phục của đức tin), so that obedience here is read as flowing from relationship with the Father, not as đạo hiếu-style hierarchical duty. |
| Father | πατρός (πατήρ) | patros (patēr) | “father” | Familial father; in NT, God as personal Father of believers/of Christ | Father | God the Father as the source and authority behind the commandment | ”Cha” — reuse baseline TM exactly (High risk doctrine: Adoption/Fatherhood). No deviation. |
2 John 1:5
Gloss: “And now I ask you, lady, not as though writing a new commandment to you, but the one we have had from the beginning: that we love one another.”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| lady | κυρία | kyria | ”lady, mistress” (feminine of κύριος) | Respectful form of address to a woman; in some readings, a personification of a church | lady, madam, mistress | The letter’s addressee, honored but not deified | ”bà” — Medium risk. Must be visually and doctrinally distinguished from Chúa (baseline TM: “Lord,” κύριος, Critical-risk Lordship doctrine). κυρία shares a root with κύριος; a careless transliteration or gloss could suggest a divine title. “Bà” carries no such risk and should be retained plainly as a term of address. |
| new commandment | ἐντολὴν καινὴν | entolēn kainēn | ”a new injunction” | Contrasted here with an ancient, received commandment | new commandment | Explicitly denies novelty — the command to love is ancient, apostolic, dominical | ”điều truyền mới” — Low-Medium risk; straightforward once “commandment” is fixed above. |
| beginning | ἀρχῆς (ἀρχή) | archēs (archē) | “beginning, origin, first cause” | Temporal starting point; in Johannine usage, often “from the start of the gospel proclamation” or echoing Genesis/John 1:1 | beginning, origin | Roots the ethic of love in apostolic, foundational teaching, not evolving novelty | ”từ ban đầu” — Low risk, standard. |
| love (verb) | ἀγαπῶμεν (ἀγαπάω) | agapōmen (agapaō) | “to love” | Self-giving, willed love; distinct from ἔρος (romantic) and φιλία (affectionate friendship) | love | The commanded, obedient love that defines walking in truth (linked directly to v.6’s “walk according to his commandments”) | “yêu thương” — High risk (NEW TERM, add to TM). See full glossary entry below: must be anchored to obedience to Christ’s commands, not reduced to sentiment, romance, or Confucian filial affection (hiếu). |
| one another | ἀλλήλους | allēlous | ”each other, one another” | Reciprocal pronoun | one another, each other | The horizontal, mutual dimension of the command | ”lẫn nhau” — Low risk, standard. |
2 John 1:6
Gloss: “And this is love: that we walk according to his commandments. This is the commandment, just as you heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| love | ἡ ἀγάπη | hē agapē | ”the love” (noun) | See v.5 | love | Defined here NOT as a feeling but as an action: walking according to commandments. This is the doctrinal core of “Walking in Truth and Love" | "sự yêu thương” — High risk. Same term as v.5; the definition clause (“this IS love…”) is a load-bearing doctrinal statement and must not be softened into “tình cảm” (mere feeling/sentiment). |
| walk (repeated 2x) | περιπατῶμεν / περιπατῆτε | peripatōmen / peripatēte | See v.4 | See v.4 | walk, conduct oneself, live | Emphatic repetition (walk…walk) binds love inseparably to obedient conduct, not mere internal disposition | ”bước đi” / “sống theo” — Medium risk, consistent with v.4. |
| heard | ἠκούσατε (ἀκούω) | ēkousate (akouō) | “to hear” | Physical hearing; in NT, receiving apostolic teaching | heard, received teaching | The command is not new revelation but received, apostolic tradition | ”đã nghe” — Low risk, standard. |
2 John 1:7
Gloss: “For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those not confessing Jesus Christ coming in the flesh; this one is the deceiver and the antichrist.”
This is the theological hinge verse of the letter — the doctrine of “Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation.”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| deceivers | πλάνοι (πλάνος) | planoi (planos) | “wanderers, misleaders” (from πλανάω, “to lead astray”) | Someone who causes others to stray from truth; a false teacher | deceivers, seducers, impostors | Specifically those who deny the incarnation — doctrinal deceivers, not merely dishonest people | ”những kẻ lừa dối” — High risk (NEW TERM, add to TM). Must be understood specifically as doctrinal false teachers denying Christ’s true humanity, not generic liars/con-artists (which would trivialize the doctrinal stakes). |
| went out | ἐξῆλθον (ἐξέρχομαι) | exēlthon (exerchomai) | “went out, departed” | Physical departure; in Johannine usage often departure from the fellowship of believers (cf. 1 John 2:19) | went out, have gone out | These deceivers were once (or claimed to be) within the community and left/departed doctrinally and/or physically | ”đã ra đi” — Low-Medium risk, standard. |
| world | κόσμον (κόσμος) | kosmon (kosmos) | “world, order, system” | The created order; in Johannine usage frequently the fallen human system in opposition to God | world | The sphere of the deceivers’ active, spreading influence | ”thế gian” — Medium risk, standard established Bible term; reuse consistent with Johannine usage elsewhere. |
| confessing | ὁμολογοῦντες (ὁμολογέω) | homologountes (homologeō) | “to say the same thing, to agree, to acknowledge/affirm openly” | Public, verbal affirmation of a truth-claim | confess, acknowledge, affirm | The public, verbal confession that is the litmus test of authentic faith — echoes Romans 10:9’s confession pattern | ”xưng nhận” — High risk (NEW TERM, add to TM). Chosen to echo the “xưng” root already established in baseline TM’s “sự xưng công bình” (justification = declared righteous), preserving lexical resonance between “declaring/confessing” theological realities. Must not be weakened to a private, internal “believing” — this is public affirmation. |
| Jesus Christ | Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν | Iēsoun Christon | Proper name + title | See baseline TM | Jesus Christ | The specific object of the required confession | ”Đức Chúa Giê-xu Christ” — reuse baseline TM “Jesus” = Đức Chúa Giê-xu exactly; combine with “Đấng Christ” per doc 12 transliteration standard for “Christ.” Critical risk, no deviation permitted. |
| coming in the flesh | ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί | erchomenon en sarki | ”coming in flesh” (present participle — ongoing/timeless confession of an accomplished, abiding reality) | The confession that the eternal Son has genuinely, permanently assumed human nature | come in the flesh, coming in flesh, incarnate | This is the doctrinal center of the letter: denial of Christ’s true, real, bodily humanity (an early docetic/proto-Gnostic heresy) is denial of the gospel itself | ”đã đến trong xác thịt” / “lấy xác thịt mà đến” — CRITICAL risk (NEW TERM tied directly to baseline Critical doctrine “Incarnation” / “Ngôi Lời trở nên xác thịt”). Must use “xác thịt” consistent with the baseline incarnation term (never bare “hóa thân,” the Buddhist bodhisattva/deity temporary-manifestation concept — same forbidden substitution as baseline’s Incarnation entry applies here with full force, since this verse is precisely a warning against denying real, permanent, bodily incarnation). Requires human theologian review on every occurrence. |
| the deceiver and the antichrist | ὁ πλάνος καὶ ὁ ἀντίχριστος | ho planos kai ho antichristos | ”the deceiver and the one against/instead-of Christ” | Personal/collective title for anyone who denies Christ’s incarnation | the deceiver, the antichrist | Identifies incarnation-denial as the defining mark of antichrist, not merely one error among many | ”kẻ địch lại Đấng Christ” for ἀντίχριστος — CRITICAL risk (NEW TERM). Established Vietnamese Protestant rendering (parallel to 1 John 2:18, 2:22, 4:3) meaning “the one who opposes/stands against Christ.” Requires theologian review; must never be softened to a vague “enemy” or “opponent” losing the specific Christological referent. |
2 John 1:8
Greek: βλέπετε ἑαυτούς, ἵνα μὴ ἀπολέσητε ἃ εἰργασάμεθα ἀλλὰ μισθὸν πλήρη ἀπολάβητε. Gloss: “Watch yourselves, so that you do not lose what we worked for, but that you receive a full reward.”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| watch yourselves | βλέπετε ἑαυτούς | blepete heautous | ”see/look to yourselves” | Vigilant self-examination against a stated danger | watch yourselves, take heed, be on guard | Direct pastoral warning flowing from v.7’s danger of doctrinal deception | ”hãy tự giữ mình” / “hãy coi chừng” — Medium risk; standard warning idiom, doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ. |
| lose | ἀπολέσητε (ἀπόλλυμι) | apolesēte (apollymi) | “to lose, destroy, ruin” | Loss of something possessed/earned | lose, forfeit | Warns of forfeiting the fruit of apostolic labor through doctrinal compromise | ”mất” — Low risk, standard. |
| what we worked for | ἃ εἰργασάμεθα (ἐργάζομαι) | ha eirgasametha (ergazomai) | “what we labored/worked” | Effort expended, in context, apostolic ministry investment in the recipients | what we have worked for, our labor | The apostolic investment of teaching and pastoral care that could be undone | ”công khó mà chúng tôi đã làm” — Low-Medium risk. |
| full reward | μισθὸν πλήρη | misthon plērē | ”full wage/reward” | Recompense, often eschatological in NT usage | full reward, complete reward | An eschatological reward that can be forfeited by compromise, not earned salvation merit (must not be read as “công đức,” Buddhist accumulated merit) | “phần thưởng đầy đủ / trọn vẹn” — Medium-High risk (NEW TERM). Must not be rendered with any term suggesting merit-accumulation toward salvation itself (cf. baseline’s rejection of “công đức” for grace/righteousness); this is a ministry/service reward category, distinguishable from justification, which is by grace alone. |
2 John 1:9
Gloss: “Everyone who goes beyond and does not abide in the teaching of Christ does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, this one has both the Father and the Son.”
The doctrinal center of “Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ.”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| goes beyond / transgresses | προάγων (προάγω) | proagōn (proagō) | “to go ahead of, go beyond, precede” | Can carry a false-positive sense of “progress” or a negative sense of “overstepping/abandoning” | goes beyond, transgresses, runs ahead, progresses | The false teachers likely claimed spiritual advancement/superior insight (proto-Gnostic overtones) while actually departing from apostolic teaching — the verse reframes their “progress” as apostasy | ”đi vượt quá” / “bỏ qua” — High risk (NEW TERM). Must be rendered so it is clearly NOT read as commendable spiritual progress; recommend “vượt quá sự dạy dỗ của Đấng Christ” (goes beyond/oversteps the teaching of Christ) with a translator note clarifying that in context this describes doctrinal abandonment framed by false teachers as advancement, not genuine growth. |
| abide/remain | μένων (μένω) | menōn (menō) | “to remain, stay, abide, continue” | Continuing presence or state; a key Johannine verb (cf. John 15’s “abide in me”) | abide, remain, continue in | Perseverance in apostolic teaching as the mark of authentic relationship with God — repeated 2x for emphasis | ”ở lại” / “cứ ở trong” — High risk (NEW TERM, add to TM). Central verb for the doctrine “Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ.” Should be rendered consistently across the letter (also appears in vv.2, cf. below) so learners recognize the recurring theme. |
| teaching (of Christ) | τῇ διδαχῇ (τοῦ Χριστοῦ) | tē didachē (tou Christou) | “the teaching, instruction” | The body of authoritative apostolic/dominical instruction about who Christ is and how to live | teaching, doctrine, instruction | The specific, defined body of apostolic teaching about Christ’s person (esp. incarnation) and ethic (love/obedience) — the boundary marker of authentic faith | ”sự dạy dỗ của Đấng Christ” — CRITICAL risk (NEW TERM, add to TM). Do NOT render διδαχή as “đạο” (a term Vietnamese uses generically for “religion/way,” e.g., đạo Phật/Buddhism, đạo Cao Đài/Caodaism, đạo Nho/Confucianism, and colloquially even đạo Tin Lành for Protestantism itself). Using “đạο Đấng Christ” would reduce Christ’s singular, authoritative teaching to one “đạο” among many equally valid religious paths in Vietnam’s religiously pluralistic landscape — precisely the syncretism this doctrine warns against. “Sự dạy dỗ của Đấng Christ” (the teaching/instruction of Christ) preserves the distinctiveness. Requires human theologian review on every occurrence. |
| has God / has the Father and the Son | θεὸν οὐκ ἔχει / τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὸν υἱὸν ἔχει | theon ouk echei / ton patera kai ton huion echei | ”does not have God” / “has the Father and the Son" | "Having” here denotes a genuine, saving relationship, not possession of an object | has/does not have God, has/lacks relationship with God | A binary, exclusive claim: right doctrine about Christ’s person is inseparable from genuine relationship with God — one cannot have the Father while rejecting the Son’s true incarnation | ”không có Đức Chúa Trời” / “có cả Cha và Con” — Critical risk. Reuse baseline TM exactly: Đức Chúa Trời (God), Cha (Father). For “Son” here (τὸν υἱὸν), see note below on Sonship. |
| the Son | τὸν υἱὸν | ton huion | ”the son” | See baseline “son_of_god” doctrine | the Son | Christ’s unique Sonship, inseparable from the Father — echoes baseline’s Critical “Sonship of Christ” doctrine | ”Con” — Critical risk. In isolation “Con” is ambiguous (any son); recommend supplying “Đấng Christ, Con của Đức Chúa Trời” in surrounding context/footnote to anchor the reference, consistent with baseline’s “Con Đức Chúa Trời” (Critical) doctrine, without altering this verse’s shorter Greek phrasing unnecessarily. |
2 John 1:10
Greek: εἴ τις ἔρχεται πρὸς ὑμᾶς καὶ ταύτην τὴν διδαχὴν οὐ φέρει, μὴ λαμβάνετε αὐτὸν εἰς οἰκίαν καὶ χαίρειν αὐτῷ μὴ λέγετε· Gloss: “If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not say to him, ‘Greetings.’”
The doctrinal center of “Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment” — the highest cultural-collision risk in this letter for a Vietnamese audience.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| does not bring this teaching | ταύτην τὴν διδαχὴν οὐ φέρει | tautēn tēn didachēn ou pherei | ”does not bring/carry this teaching” | Same διδαχή as v.9; φέρω = to carry/bring | does not bring/hold this teaching | The visiting teacher’s doctrine about Christ’s incarnation (v.7) and Christ’s teaching generally is the test for hospitality, not personal charisma or social status | ”không mang theo sự dạy dỗ này” — High risk, consistent with v.9’s διδαχή rendering. |
| do not receive him into your house | μὴ λαμβάνετε αὐτὸν εἰς οἰκίαν | mē lambanete auton eis oikian | ”do not take/receive him into house” | λαμβάνω = receive/take; οἰκία = house/household — in the ancient world, receiving a traveling teacher into one’s home implied material support, endorsement, and a platform to teach further | do not receive him into your house, do not welcome him into your home | A concrete, costly instruction: withhold the specific hospitality that would materially enable a false teacher to spread incarnation-denying doctrine further | ”đừng tiếp người ấy vào nhà” — HIGH RISK cultural-collision term (NEW TERM). Vietnamese culture places extraordinarily high value on hospitality toward guests, elders, and religious teachers (“khách đến nhà, chẳng gà thì vịt” — a folk proverb on the sacred duty to feed guests; hospitality is a core social virtue tied to family honor). A command to actively refuse hospitality will feel sharply countercultural and potentially shame-inducing to a Vietnamese reader. Requires human theologian AND native-speaker cultural review, with explicit teaching notes: (1) this instruction targets a specific traveling teacher actively promoting incarnation-denial, not general hospitality to strangers/neighbors, which Scripture elsewhere commands; (2) the point is refusing a platform for false doctrine, not simple rudeness or a violation of Vietnamese hospitality norms. |
| do not say to him, ‘Greetings’ | χαίρειν αὐτῷ μὴ λέγετε | chairein autō mē legete | ”do not say to him ‘to rejoice’ [i.e., ‘hail/God speed’]“ | χαίρειν used as a fixed epistolary/verbal greeting formula (lit. “rejoice!”), functioning as a blessing/endorsement, not mere “hello” | do not wish him well, do not give him a greeting, do not say “God speed” | Withholding a formal greeting-blessing that would imply approval/endorsement of the false teacher’s ministry — distinct from ordinary politeness | ”đừng chào (chúc) người ấy” — High risk (NEW TERM). Must be taught as withholding a specific formal blessing/endorsement greeting, not licensing believers to be rude, unkind, or dismissive of persons generally — an important distinction given the weight Vietnamese culture places on respectful greeting of elders/guests. Recommend rendering with a clarifying phrase such as “đừng chúc phước cho người ấy” (do not bless/wish [God’s] favor on him) to make clear this is a withheld blessing-formula, not ordinary courtesy. |
2 John 1:11
Greek: ὁ λέγων γὰρ αὐτῷ χαίρειν κοινωνεῖ τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ τοῖς πονηροῖς. Gloss: “For the one who says to him ‘Greetings’ shares/partakes in his evil works.”
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| shares/partakes | κοινωνεῖ (κοινωνέω) | koinōnei (koinoneō) | “to share, participate, have fellowship with” | Same root as κοινωνία (fellowship, baseline TM “sự thông công”), but used here in a NEGATIVE sense — partnering with evil, not the positive fellowship of believers in Christ | shares in, partakes of, becomes complicit in, has fellowship with | Extending endorsement/hospitality to a doctrinal deceiver makes the host morally complicit in the deceiver’s evil work — a strong warning grounding the “Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment” doctrine | ”dự phần vào” — HIGH RISK (NEW TERM, add to TM). MUST NOT use baseline’s positive fellowship term “sự thông công” here — that term is reserved (per baseline TM) for shared participation in Christ among believers. Using it for participation in evil works would create a severe doctrinal confusion, implying “fellowship” itself (a treasured, positive category in the baseline) can mean partnership in sin. This is the single highest-priority NEW forbidden-substitution rule this book adds to the pipeline: κοινωνέω in a negative context (2 John 11) → “dự phần” (partake), never “thông công.” |
| his evil works | τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῖς τοῖς πονηροῖς | tois ergois autois tois ponērois | ”his works, the evil ones” | ἔργα = deeds/works; πονηρός = evil, wicked, morally corrupt | evil deeds, wicked works | The false teacher’s doctrinal deception is itself characterized as morally evil “work,” not a neutral intellectual error | ”những việc ác của người ấy” — Medium risk, standard; connects to baseline’s “sin” doctrine (tội lỗi) as morally serious, not neutral disagreement. |
CHAPTER 1: REMAINING VERSES (1:1–3 Salutation; 1:12–13 Closing)
2 John has only one chapter. Per the full-coverage mandate, the salutation and closing — which surround the core passage — receive the same term-by-term treatment below. No new doctrine categories arise here beyond what the core passage establishes, but several terms are introduced for the first time and must be added to translation memory.
2 John 1:1–3 (Salutation)
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| elder | ὁ πρεσβύτερος | ho presbyteros | ”elder, older man” | Age-based respect term; also a formal church office title (cf. Acts 14:23) | the elder, an elder | The author’s self-designation of pastoral authority, likely the Apostle John late in life | ”Trưởng lão” — Medium risk (NEW TERM). Established Vietnamese Bible term for church elder. Note collision risk: “Trưởng lão” is also a title for senior monks in Vietnamese Theravada Buddhist monastic hierarchy. Context (Christian epistolary greeting, apostolic authority) should sufficiently disambiguate, but a brief teaching note is recommended for first occurrence. |
| elect lady | ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ | eklektē kyria | ”chosen/elect lady” | ἐκλεκτός = chosen, selected (same root as baseline’s “election,” sự lựa chọn); κυρία = lady, see v.5 | the elect lady, a chosen lady, an honored lady | Either an individual Christian woman or (many scholars) personification of a local church, chosen/elect in the same sense believers generally are elect in Christ | ”bà được chọn” — Medium risk (NEW TERM). “Được chọn” mirrors the grammatical pattern of baseline’s “được kêu gọi” (called) and connects to baseline doctrine “Election” (sự lựa chọn). Translator note: referent (individual woman vs. personified church) is genuinely ambiguous in the Greek and should be flagged, not resolved, in translation. |
| children | τοῖς τέκνοις | tois teknois | ”children” | Biological children; or, if κυρία is a church, spiritual “children” (members) | children | Same ambiguity as κυρία above extends here | ”các con” — Low risk, standard. |
| known the truth | οἱ ἐγνωκότες τὴν ἀλήθειαν | hoi egnokotes tēn alētheian | ”those having known the truth” (perfect participle — a settled, completed state of knowing) | γινώσκω = to know, come to know, recognize | those who have come to know the truth | Truth here is not a private possession of the author but shared, corporately recognized reality among all genuine believers | ”những người đã biết lẽ thật” — Medium risk, consistent with “lẽ thật” rendering established above. |
| abiding/remaining | μένουσαν (μένω) | menousan (menō) | “abiding, remaining” | Same verb as v.9’s μένων | abides, remains, dwells | Truth is not a fleeting insight but a permanent indwelling reality — anticipates the “abide in the teaching” language of v.9 | ”ở lại” / “ở trong” — consistent with v.9 rendering. |
| forever | εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα | eis ton aiōna | ”into the age” | Standard NT idiom for eternity | forever, for ever, eternally | Truth’s abiding permanence, contrasted implicitly with the transience of the deceivers’ error | ”đời đời” — Low risk, standard established Bible idiom. |
| grace, mercy, peace | χάρις ἔλεος εἰρήνη | charis eleos eirēnē | ”grace, mercy, peace” | Triad of blessing (distinct from Paul’s usual “grace and peace” pairing) | grace, mercy and peace | A fuller apostolic blessing triad; source explicitly named as both God the Father and Jesus Christ, jointly, implying shared deity | χάρις: “ân điển” (reuse baseline TM exactly, High risk); εἰρήνη: “sự bình an” (reuse baseline TM exactly, Medium risk); ἔλεος: “sự thương xót” — Medium-High risk (NEW TERM, add to TM). Must not be rendered “lòng từ bi,” the standard Vietnamese Buddhist term for the compassion of a bodhisattva (esp. associated with Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát/Avalokiteśvara), which carries an entirely different soteriological framework (compassion flowing from enlightenment, extended to all sentient beings impersonally) rather than the personal mercy of the covenant God toward specific sinners. |
| God the Father | θεοῦ πατρός | theou patros | ”God Father” | See baseline TM | God the Father | Reuse baseline exactly | ”Đức Chúa Trời, Cha” — reuse baseline TM exactly (Critical risk, no deviation). |
| Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father | Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός | Iēsou Christou tou huiou tou patros | ”Jesus Christ, the son of the Father” | See baseline “son_of_god” doctrine, extended here with “of the Father” | Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father | A close variant of baseline’s Critical “Son of God” doctrine — same eternal, unique Sonship, specified relationally to the Father | ”Đức Chúa Giê-xu Christ, Con của Cha” — Critical risk (NEW TERM tied to existing Critical doctrine). Recommend explicit theologian review to confirm this phrase is taught as identical in force to baseline’s “Con Đức Chúa Trời” (Sonship/Deity of Christ, Critical), not as a lesser or different category of sonship. |
| truth and love | ἐν ἀληθείᾳ καὶ ἀγάπῃ | en alētheia kai agapē | ”in truth and love” | See above entries | in truth and love | Names the letter’s twin governing doctrine explicitly, as the sphere in which grace/mercy/peace operate | ”trong lẽ thật và sự yêu thương” — High risk; the letter’s thematic banner phrase, consistency required across all future 2 John materials. |
2 John 1:12–13 (Closing)
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| hope | ἐλπίζω | elpizō | ”to hope” | Confident expectation, not mere wishing | hope, expect | Ordinary epistolary hope for a future visit — low doctrinal weight here | ”hy vọng” — Low risk, standard. |
| mouth to mouth (face to face) | στόμα πρὸς στόμα | stoma pros stoma | ”mouth to mouth” | Hebraic idiom for direct, personal, unmediated communication (cf. Numbers 12:8 LXX) | face to face, in person | Prefers oral, personal fellowship over written communication — an idiom, not literal | ”mặt đối mặt” / “trực tiếp” — Low risk. Per idiom-handling rule, do not translate literally (“miệng đối miệng” would be unnatural and mildly comic in Vietnamese); use the natural Vietnamese equivalent for face-to-face meeting. |
| joy | ἡ χαρὰ | hē chara | ”joy” | Deep gladness; shares a root with χαίρειν (v.10-11’s greeting formula) but a distinct sense (subjective joy vs. a greeting-blessing formula) | joy, gladness | Mutual joy anticipated from face-to-face fellowship — the positive counterpart to the letter’s warnings | ”sự vui mừng” — Low risk, standard. Translator note: shares a Greek root with χαίρειν (vv.10-11) but must not be confused with it; render with distinct Vietnamese words (“sự vui mừng” for joy vs. “chào/chúc” for the greeting formula) to avoid implying the letter contradicts itself by both forbidding and desiring “joy.” |
| fulfilled/full | πεπληρωμένη (πληρόω) | peplērōmenē (plēroō) | “having been filled, made full” (perfect passive participle) | Completeness, fullness | fulfilled, made full, complete | The relational goal of the letter: complete, unhindered joy through direct fellowship | ”được đầy dẫy” / “được trọn vẹn” — Low risk, standard. |
| greets/sends greetings | Ἀσπάζεταί (ἀσπάζομαι) | Aspazetai (aspazomai) | “greets, salutes” | Standard ancient epistolary closing-greeting verb | greets, sends greetings | Ordinary, warm closing greeting — DISTINCT from the χαίρειν greeting-formula of vv.10-11, which is a different Greek word and a different context (an act of doctrinal endorsement, not a normal epistolary closing) | “gửi lời chào” / “kính chào” — Low risk, but flag for translator clarity: ἀσπάζομαι (here) and χαίρειν (vv.10-11) are different Greek words serving different functions; render with visibly different Vietnamese phrasing so readers do not think the letter forbids ordinary greetings altogether. |
| sister | τῆς ἀδελφῆς | tēs adelphēs | ”the sister” | Literal blood sister; or, if κυρία represents a church, a “sister church” | sister | Closing greeting from the addressee’s (literal or figurative) sister’s children — mirrors the ambiguity of κυρία in v.1 | ”em/chị” — Medium risk (referent ambiguity, same as κυρία above; flag, do not resolve). |
| elect (repeated) | τῆς ἐκλεκτῆς | tēs eklektēs | ”the elect/chosen [sister]“ | See ἐκλεκτή, v.1 | the elect, the chosen | Frames the closing greeting with the same election language that opened the letter, bracketing the whole letter in election/covenant-belonging language | ”được chọn” — consistent with v.1 rendering. |
