Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — Gospel of John (Full-Book Coverage)
Purpose
This document maps every doctrine named in the curriculum parameters — plus the supporting doctrines already captured in assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json — onto its complete set of supporting passages across all 21 chapters of John. The core passage (John 3:1-21) is the theological anchor of the curriculum but is not treated as the scope boundary; every chapter is reviewed and every doctrinal occurrence tracked, per the PRD Phase 1 full-book coverage mandate.
Risk tiers, doctrine names, and Vietnamese doctrine names below are copied verbatim from assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json and must not be altered independently in Phase 2. Review routing follows the same convention as the Romans baseline: Critical/High → human theologian review; Medium → native speaker review; Low → automated review.

Full Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrine Matrix
| Ch. | Section / Pericope | Doctrines Active | Supporting Passages (John) | Risk (max) | Translation Risk Note | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Prologue: the Word, witness of John the Baptist, first disciples | D1, D2, D3, D13, D14, D15, D19, D24 | 1:1-5, 1:6-9, 1:12-14, 1:15, 1:19, 1:29, 1:32-34, 1:41, 1:45, 1:51 | Critical | 1:1-3 is the single highest-stakes verse in the book: Ngôi Lời must name a distinct, eternal, personal divine Being, not a message; 1:14’s Ngôi Lời trở nên xác thịt must never shade toward hóa thân. “Con cái Đức Chúa Trời” (1:12-13) must not merge with Con Đức Chúa Trời. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Wedding at Cana; temple cleansing | D19, D25, D11 (foreshadowed) | 2:1-11, 2:13, 2:19-22 | Critical | 2:19-22 previews the resurrection claim (“destroy this temple… raise it”) that must be kept literal-bodily, not read as a figurative renewal cycle. Dấu lạ (sign) at 2:11 must retain attestation sense, not bare wonder-working. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Nicodemus discourse (CORE PASSAGE); bronze serpent typology; John the Baptist’s final testimony | D4, D5, D6, D7, D10 (typology), D14, D19, D22 | 3:1-8, 3:9-15, 3:14, 3:16-18, 3:19-21, 3:22-30, 3:31-36 | Critical | Theological anchor of the curriculum. “Được sinh lại” (3:3,7) must never shade toward tái sinh (karmic rebirth). “Phải” (must, 3:7) is a necessity, not advice. “Sự sống đời đời” (3:15-16) is a present possession, not an escape from personal existence. “Thế gian” (3:16) must not read as something to be renounced. “Đã bị đoán xét rồi” (3:18) must stay present-tense, not future-only. “Cơn thịnh nộ của Đức Chúa Trời” (3:36) must not soften into karma. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Samaritan woman; living water; healing of official’s son | D5, D6, D16, D25 | 4:10, 4:14, 4:20-24, 4:42, 4:54 | High | ”Thờ phượng” (4:23-24) must be kept fully distinct from thờ cúng (ancestor-altar offerings). “Cứu Chúa của thế gian” (4:42) must retain full salvific weight, not read as generic “helper/rescuer.” | Human theologian (D6); Native speaker (D16) |
| 5 | Healing at Bethesda; discourse on the Son’s authority and witnesses | D11, D12, D15, D22, D24 | 5:16-18, 5:18, 5:23, 5:24, 5:28-29, 5:31-39 | Critical | 5:18’s “equal with God” claim is the first explicit Unity-of-Father-Son flashpoint in the book and must convey ontological equality, not favored-relationship status. 5:28-29’s two resurrections must stay a single bodily event with two destinies, not cyclical rebirths. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Feeding of the 5,000; Bread of Life discourse; Peter’s confession | D5, D8, D25, D21 | 6:1-14, 6:20, 6:35, 6:47, 6:48, 6:51, 6:69, 6:70 | Critical | First of the seven “I Am” predicated statements (6:35); must retain exclusive, life-giving identity, not “a” source of nourishment among others. 6:70 (devil) must be taught as a singular personal adversary, not folk spirit-category. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Feast of Tabernacles teaching; debate over Messiah’s origin | D19, D24 | 7:1, 7:13, 7:26-27, 7:40-43 | Medium | No new load-bearing terms; reuses Đấng Mê-si-a, tiên tri, người Giu-đa already tabled. Reviewed — reused terms only. | Native speaker review |
| 8 | Light of the World; “before Abraham was, I Am”; children of the devil | D1, D8, D14, D21, D22, D24 | 8:12, 8:24, 8:28, 8:44, 8:58 | Critical | 8:58’s absolute ἐγώ εἰμι (“đã có ta”) is the single sharpest pre-existence claim in the book and must never be flattened into comparative seniority (“existed before Abraham did,” a relative-time claim). Echoes Exodus 3:14; requires an explicit theologian note. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Healing of the man born blind | D14, D22, D25, D26 | 9:5, 9:22, 9:39-41 | Medium | No new load-bearing theological terms beyond those already tabled (sự sáng, dấu lạ, nhà hội, tội lỗi, Con người). Reviewed — reused terms only; doctrinal content (willful vs. neutral blindness) still active and must be preserved in context. | Native speaker review (Medium/Low terms); Human theologian for judgment framing carried from D22 |
| 10 | Good Shepherd; “I and the Father are one” | D8, D10, D12, D20, D21 | 10:9, 10:11, 10:14-18, 10:28-30, 10:30-33 | Critical | 10:30 (“Ta và Cha là một”) must avoid both a mere-agreement reading and a modalist collapse of Persons. 10:9’s exclusivity of access (“the door”) must resist the many-paths-one-mountain folk-syncretistic reading. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Raising of Lazarus | D3, D8, D11, D25 | 11:25, 11:33-35, 11:52 (also D13) | Critical | 11:25 intensifies resurrection Christology: Christ does not merely predict resurrection, he personally IS it — a single, universal, bodily event, categorically distinct from rebirth cycles. 11:33-35’s genuine grief undercuts any docetic reading. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Triumphal entry; the grain of wheat; being lifted up; light/darkness summary | D10, D14, D19, D21 | 12:23-24, 12:31, 12:32-33, 12:35-36, 12:46-48 | Critical | ”Lifted up” (12:32-33) must retain both the physical/shameful crucifixion sense and the exaltation sense together; rendering exaltation alone erases the substitutionary dimension. 12:31 “ruler of this world” must not be rendered with any term visually/lexically overlapping Chúa. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Foot washing; new commandment; Judas’s betrayal foretold | D3, D21, D23 | 13:2, 13:27, 13:34-35 | Medium | The new commandment (13:34-35) must not be read through the Confucian reciprocal-debt lens (ơn nghĩa); love here flows from Christ’s own self-giving example. | Native speaker review (D23); Human theologian (D21 Satan entering Judas) |
| 14 | Upper Room discourse: “the way, the truth, and the life”; the Counselor promised; peace | D8, D9, D12, D20, D21 | 14:6, 14:10, 14:16-17, 14:26, 14:27, 14:30 | Critical | 14:6’s exclusivity clause (“no one comes to the Father except through me”) must remain explicit against the many-paths metaphor. 14:16-17,26 introduce Đấng An Ủi, which must never be modeled on consulted spirits, mediums, or ancestor-spirits sought for comfort. | Human theologian |
| 15 | The True Vine; abiding; new commandment continued; the Spirit of truth’s coming testimony | D9, D17, D23 | 15:1-17 (esp. 15:4-5, 15:12-13,17), 15:26 | High | ”Cứ ở trong” must be rendered identically across all 11 occurrences in this chapter, preserving John’s deliberate repetition; fruitfulness must remain entirely relationally contingent, not self-cultivated merit. | Human theologian |
| 16 | The Spirit’s convicting and guiding ministry; sorrow turned to joy; “I have overcome the world” | D9, D20, D21, D22 | 16:7-15, 16:8-11, 16:33 | Critical | The Spirit’s “convicting” ministry (16:8-11) must echo 3:20’s cáo trách consistently; this is the Spirit continuing Christ’s own exposing work, not an impersonal moral sense. | Human theologian |
| 17 | The High Priestly Prayer | D1, D5, D12, D18 | 17:3, 17:5, 17:11, 17:18, 17:21-23 | Critical | 17:21-23 extends Father-Son unity to believers and must preserve the καθὼς (“just as”) causal link — not substitute the Confucian social-harmony ideal, which would ground unity in interpersonal goodwill rather than participatory union in Christ. | Human theologian |
| 18 | Arrest and trials before Annas, Caiaphas, Pilate | D10, D24 | 18:5-8 (Ta là echo), 18:33-39 | Critical | 18:5-8’s ἐγώ εἰμι echoes the absolute self-identification of 8:58 and must not be flattened to a mere “It is I” self-identification in the narrative. “Người Giu-đa” must remain contextually qualified (leadership vs. crowd) throughout the trial narrative. | Human theologian |
| 19 | Crucifixion; “It is finished”; blood and water; burial | D3, D10, D19, D24 | 19:19-21, 19:24, 19:28, 19:30, 19:34, 19:36-37 | Critical | ”Được trọn rồi” (19:30) must never suggest an incomplete, ongoing, or supplementable work — directly reinforcing the rejection of accumulated merit (công đức) as any part of salvation’s ground. 19:34’s blood and water underscores a real, verifiable physical death. | Human theologian |
| 20 | Resurrection appearances; Thomas’s confession; stated purpose of the book | D5, D11, D12, D15 | 20:1-18, 20:19-23 (Spirit given), 20:24-29, 20:28, 20:30-31 | Critical | 20:28’s confession (“Lạy Chúa tôi và Đức Chúa Trời tôi!”) must be rendered as deliberate worship joining deity and bodily resurrection, not a colloquial exclamation echoing folk “Trời ơi!” speech. 20:31 anchors the whole book’s purpose in eternal life through belief. | Human theologian |
| 21 | Epilogue: miraculous catch; restoration of Peter; concluding testimony | D18, D27, D15 | 21:15-19, 21:24 | Low | Reuses môn đồ, làm chứng, and the already-flagged yêu/yêu mến translation-technique note (no two-verb Vietnamese equivalent for ἀγαπάω/φιλέω); reviewed — no new doctrinal collision beyond the tabled note. | Automated review (D27); Native speaker review (D18, D15) |
Summary Statistics
Consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json:
| Risk Tier | Count of Doctrines | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 10 | Human theologian (mandatory, every occurrence) |
| High | 10 | Human theologian (mandatory) |
| Medium | 6 | Native speaker review |
| Low | 2 | Automated review |
Chapters carrying at least one Critical-tier doctrine: 1, 2, 3 (core passage), 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 — the majority of the book, reflecting John’s sustained Christological and pneumatological density.
Chapters reviewed with no new doctrinal collision risk (reused terms only): 7, 9, 21 (partial — 21 introduces the Low-risk agapaō/phileō translation-technique flag but no doctrinal collision). All are explicitly noted above per the full-book-coverage mandate; none are silently omitted.
This matrix must be loaded alongside assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json and the John core glossary (08_core_glossary.md) before Phase 2 segment translation begins. Any new doctrine surfaced during Phase 2 that is not represented above must be added to both this matrix and the doctrine risk registry before translation of the affected segment proceeds.
Critical Risk Doctrines
The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Vietnamese name: Thần Tính và Sự Hiện Hữu Trước Vô Cùng của Đấng Christ (Ngôi Lời)
Key terms: Logos, Ngôi Lời, Ta là, before Abraham was, I am, glory before the world existed
Review routing: Human theologian
Ngôi Lời must never be softened to ‘lời của Đức Chúa Trời’ (functional message content) in 1:1-3, which asserts a distinct, eternal, personal divine Being, not merely a message. 8:58’s ‘đã có ta’ must not be flattened into a comparative temporal claim (‘existed before Abraham’ as mere priority in time); Vietnamese has no rival concept threatening syncretism here, but underspecified grammar risks reducing an absolute eternal-existence claim to relative seniority, echoed also in 8:24,28; 13:19; 18:5-8.
Incarnation
Vietnamese name: Sự Nhập Thể
Key terms: Word became flesh, Ngôi Lời trở nên xác thịt, flesh
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Never rendered through ‘hóa thân,’ the standard Vietnamese Buddhist term for a bodhisattva’s or deity’s repeatable manifestation into a body. John 1:14 is the direct source verse for the Romans baseline’s Incarnation entry; the fuller phrase preserves the once-for-all, historical, single-incarnation framing against Vietnam’s folk-religious multiple-manifestation expectation.
The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Vietnamese name: Sự Sinh Lại và Sự Tái Tạo bởi Đức Thánh Linh
Key terms: born again, born from above, được sinh lại, born of water and the Spirit, wind/Spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Must never use ‘tái sinh,’ the standard Vietnamese Buddhist term for karmic rebirth/reincarnation within the cycle of saṃsāra. ‘Được sinh lại’ keeps the concept anchored in an ordinary human-birth metaphor applied to a single, Spirit-wrought event, not a repeatable cycle of successive lives determined by karma. The necessity (‘phải,’ must, 3:7) must not be softened to advice. ‘Born of water’ (3:5) must not be taught as water itself regenerating, a mechanical/ritual view close to folk purificatory water-rite expectations.
Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Vietnamese name: Sự Sống Đời Đời qua Đức Tin nơi Đấng Christ
Key terms: eternal life, sự sống đời đời, believe, life, living water
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Must be clearly distinguished from luân hồi/tái sinh (an endlessly repeating cycle of lives) and from giải thoát/Nirvana (an impersonal, self-attained state of non-being, already Critical in the Romans baseline salvation entry). Eternal life in John is a present possession (present tense ‘ἔχῃ’ in 3:15-16) and a personal relationship with God through Christ (17:3), received as a gift, not an escape from personal existence or a state earned through successive lives of merit.
The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Vietnamese name: Bảy Lời Tuyên Bố ‘Ta Là’ của Đấng Christ
Key terms: bread of life, light of the world, the door, the good shepherd, the resurrection and the life, the way the truth and the life, the true vine, Ta là
Review routing: Human theologian
Each predicated ‘Ta là’ statement asserts exclusive, life-giving identity that must not be softened into one option among several — most acutely at 10:9 (‘the door’) and 14:6 (‘the way’), where the exclusivity clause (‘no one comes to the Father except through me’) collides directly with the common Vietnamese folk-Buddhist/syncretistic metaphor of many paths up one mountain. The absolute, predicate-less ἐγώ εἰμι occurrences (8:58 etc.) are separately flagged Critical under Deity/Pre-existence.
The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Vietnamese name: Đức Thánh Linh là Đấng An Ủi
Key terms: Counselor, Advocate, Paraclete, Đấng An Ủi, Spirit of truth, convict
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: The Holy Spirit as ‘another Paraclete’ must be taught as a distinct, personal, divine Advocate continuing Christ’s own ministry, not an impersonal comforting presence, and emphatically not modeled on Vietnamese folk-religious categories of consulted spirits, mediums, or ancestor-spirits sought for comfort or guidance at the family altar — the same collision risk already flagged Critical for ‘intercession’ and for bare ‘thần linh’ in the Romans baseline.
Christ’s Substitutionary Death
Vietnamese name: Sự Chết Thay của Đấng Christ
Key terms: Lamb of God, lifted up, lay down his life, It is finished, grain of wheat
Review routing: Human theologian
‘Lifted up’ (ὑψόω) must retain both the physical, shameful act (‘bị treo lên’) and the exaltation sense together, not honorific exaltation alone (‘được tôn cao’), which would erase the substitutionary, sacrificial dimension. ‘Được trọn rồi’ (19:30) must never suggest an ongoing, repeatable, or supplementable work — directly reinforcing the Romans baseline’s rejection of accumulated merit (công đức) as any part of the ground of salvation. The Lamb of God title requires OT sacrificial/Passover background teaching so it is not read as a generic, repeatable ritual offering.
Christ’s Resurrection
Vietnamese name: Sự Sống Lại của Đấng Christ
Key terms: I am the resurrection and the life, resurrection of life, resurrection of judgment, My Lord and my God
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Never đầu thai/luân hồi (rebirth/reincarnation into the cycle of samsara). 11:25 intensifies the Romans baseline warning: Christ does not merely predict or perform resurrection, he personally IS resurrection-life, a single, once-for-all, universal, bodily event with two possible destinies (5:29), categorically different from repeated cycles of rebirth. Thomas’s confession (20:28) must be rendered as deliberate worship, not a colloquial exclamation (‘Trời ơi!’-style outburst), joining deity and bodily resurrection in one act of worship.
Unity of the Father and the Son
Vietnamese name: Sự Hiệp Một của Cha và Con
Key terms: I and the Father are one, equal with God, that they may be one, honor the Son as the Father
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Must avoid two opposite errors: reducing ‘one’ (ἕν) to mere agreement or shared purpose, a weaker unity any two allied people could claim (undermining the deity claim); or collapsing the distinction of Persons into a single undifferentiated being (modalism, undermining Trinitarian personal distinction). 17:21-23’s extension of this unity to believers must preserve the ‘καθὼς’ (just as) link to the Father-Son unity, not substitute the Confucian social-harmony ideal familiar in Vietnamese culture, which would ground unity in interpersonal goodwill rather than participatory union in Christ.
High Risk Doctrines
Humanity of Christ
Vietnamese name: Nhân Tính của Đấng Christ
Key terms: flesh, wept, groaned, blood and water
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s humanity was fully real physical existence with genuine emotion and physical death, not a temporary manifestation as in stories of deities or bodhisattvas appearing in human form (hóa thân); 19:34’s blood and water underscores a real, verifiable physical death against any docetic-adjacent reading a syncretistic audience might supply.
God’s Love for the World
Vietnamese name: Sự Yêu Thương của Đức Chúa Trời đối với Thế Gian
Key terms: God so loved the world, gave his only Son, world, thế gian
Review routing: Human theologian
‘Thế gian’ already carries strong Vietnamese Buddhist connotations as something to be renounced or seen through (vô thường, impermanence) on the path to liberation. John 3:16 asserts the opposite relational posture: God actively, deliberately loves this very thế gian in its fallen, hostile state rather than teaching detachment from it. Requires an explicit teaching note contrasting renunciation with rescuing love followed by holy engagement (cf. 17:15-18).
Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Vietnamese name: Sự Đoán Xét và Đức Tin/Sự Vô Tín
Key terms: condemn, condemned already, light and darkness, perish, wrath of God, convict
Review routing: Human theologian
The perfect-tense present reality of unbelief’s condemnation (‘đã bị đoán xét rồi,’ 3:18) must not be softened into a future-only warning. ‘Hư mất’ (perish) must not be reduced to a temporal, reversible setback. ‘Cơn thịnh nộ của Đức Chúa Trời’ (3:36) must not be softened into impersonal misfortune or bad karma (nghiệp). The light/darkness contrast must be taught as willful moral preference, not neutral ignorance.
Children of God (Believers’ Derived Sonship)
Vietnamese name: Địa Vị Con Cái của Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: children of God, born of God, not of the will of the flesh
Review routing: Human theologian
Must never be conflated with Con Đức Chúa Trời (Christ’s unique, eternal Sonship, υἱός); τέκνα is a granted, derived status. The explicit rejection of bloodline, human will, or human effort as the basis of this status (‘not of the will of the flesh’) directly rebuts any framing where becoming a child of God could be inherited by family lineage or ancestral religious status, a point of real weight in Vietnam’s lineage-conscious, ancestor-venerating family structures.
Light and Darkness (Revelation and Willful Rejection)
Vietnamese name: Sự Sáng và Sự Tối Tăm
Key terms: light of the world, darkness, loved darkness rather than light
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s incarnate presence as ‘sự sáng’ must be capitalized/treated titularly where it names Christ himself, distinct from generic moral-illumination usage; the preference for darkness must be taught as an active, willful choice, not neutral ignorance, a distinction easily lost without a translator’s note in Vietnamese, which has no comparable light/darkness idiom pair already carrying this exact moral freight.
Union with Christ (Abiding and Fruitfulness)
Vietnamese name: Sự Hiệp Nhất với Đấng Christ (Cứ Ở Trong Ngài)
Key terms: abide, true vine, apart from me you can do nothing, friends not servants
Review routing: Human theologian
‘Cứ ở trong’ must be rendered consistently across all 11 occurrences in ch.15 and elsewhere, preserving John’s deliberate repetitive stylistic and theological device; fruitfulness is entirely contingent on this relationship, not independent effort — a point requiring care against any drift toward a self-cultivated-merit framing.
Spiritual Opposition (The Devil)
Vietnamese name: Sự Chống Nghịch Thuộc Linh (Ma Quỉ)
Key terms: devil, ruler of this world, father of lies
Review routing: Human theologian
Must be taught as a singular, personal adversary of God cast out through the cross, distinguished from the populated Vietnamese folk-religious spirit-world of ancestor-spirits and nature-spirits (thần linh); conflating the two would dissolve a decisive, judged enemy into one spirit among many to be managed or appeased.
The Wrath of God and Present Judgment
Vietnamese name: Cơn Thịnh Nộ của Đức Chúa Trời và Sự Đoán Xét Hiện Tại
Key terms: wrath of God, condemned already, judgment
Review routing: Human theologian
Must not be softened into impersonal misfortune, fate, or bad karma (nghiệp/số trời); this is the settled judicial displeasure of a personal God, and the present tense of condemnation for unbelief (‘already,’ 3:18) must not be reduced to a future-only warning.
Careful Handling of ‘The Jews’ (Ioudaioi)
Vietnamese name: Cách Xử Lý Cẩn Trọng Cụm Từ ‘Người Giu-đa’
Key terms: the Jews, ruler of the Jews, King of the Jews
Review routing: Human theologian
John’s Greek term Ἰουδαῖοι refers variably to the people generally, regional/religious groups, and most often hostile leadership figures. A blanket rendering risks the false impression, foreign to the text itself (where many believers, including the disciples, are also Ἰουδαῖοι), that John indicts an entire ethnicity; ‘người Giu-đa’ with consistent contextual qualification (leadership groups vs. crowds) must be maintained throughout.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Witness and Testimony to Christ
Vietnamese name: Sự Làm Chứng về Đấng Christ
Key terms: testify, witness, we speak what we know
Review routing: Native speaker review
Must be taught as formal, legal/eyewitness testimony to directly observed truth, distinguished from Vietnamese folk practices of oracular or mediumistic ‘witnessing’ involving spirit communication.
Worship in Spirit and Truth
Vietnamese name: Sự Thờ Phượng bằng Tâm Thần và Lẽ Thật
Key terms: worship, in spirit and truth, true worshipers
Review routing: Native speaker review
‘Thờ phượng’ must be kept distinct from ‘thờ cúng’ (ancestor-veneration offerings at the family altar); worship here is redefined as inward, Spirit-enabled, and Father/Son-centered rather than tied to a fixed sacred location.
Mission and Sending
Vietnamese name: Sứ Mệnh và Sự Được Sai Đi
Key terms: sent, as you sent me so I have sent them, how will they hear
Review routing: Native speaker review
The Father’s sending of the Son becomes the explicit pattern for the disciples’ own sending into the world; kept proclamation-focused per the Romans baseline’s mission entry, avoiding institutional religious-propagation language.
Fulfillment of Prophecy and OT Typology
Vietnamese name: Sự Ứng Nghiệm Lời Tiên Tri và Hình Bóng trong Cựu Ước
Key terms: Moses lifted up the serpent, Passover, Scripture fulfilled, Lamb of God
Review routing: Native speaker review
Requires OT/Exodus and Numbers background teaching for first-generation believers with low OT narrative literacy; low direct cultural-collision risk, but the typological logic (bronze serpent, Passover lamb) must be explained rather than assumed as background knowledge.
Assurance and Victory over the World
Vietnamese name: Sự Chắc Chắn và Sự Đắc Thắng Thế Gian
Key terms: I have overcome the world, no one can snatch them out of my hand, peace I leave with you
Review routing: Native speaker review
Assurance rests on Christ’s finished victory and his personal keeping power, not on an uncertain karmic outcome or on maintaining family ancestor-veneration obligations, paralleling the Romans baseline’s Assurance of Salvation caution.
The New Commandment (Christ-Modeled Love)
Vietnamese name: Điều Răn Mới (Yêu Thương theo Mẫu Mực của Đấng Christ)
Key terms: new commandment, love one another as I have loved you, by this all will know
Review routing: Native speaker review
Must not be read through a Confucian reciprocal-obligation ethic (ơn nghĩa, a favor creating a debt to repay); love here flows from and imitates Christ’s own self-giving example, not a social debt.
Signs as Attestation of Christ’s Identity
Vietnamese name: Dấu Lạ như Sự Chứng Thực về Danh Tính của Đấng Christ
Key terms: sign, these signs, no one can do these signs unless God is with him
Review routing: Native speaker review
‘Dấu lạ,’ not bare ‘phép lạ’ (generic wonder-working closer to folk-magic feats), must retain the sense of an attesting pointer to Christ’s identity, not an end in itself; John’s own stated purpose (20:30-31) frames the signs as written so readers would believe and have life.
Low Risk Doctrines
Synagogue and Jewish Religious Institutions
Vietnamese name: Nhà Hội và Các Cơ Chế Tôn Giáo Do Thái
Key terms: synagogue, cast out of the synagogue
Review routing: Automated review
‘Nhà hội’ must be distinguished from Hội Thánh (the church); low doctrinal risk, but a useful cultural-sensitivity note for the real social cost some Vietnamese converts face when excluded from family ancestor-rites participation, paralleling the social cost of synagogue expulsion.
Christ’s Restoration of Peter (Agapaō/Phileō Exchange)
Vietnamese name: Sự Phục Hồi Phi-e-rơ (Cuộc Đối Đáp Yêu/Yêu Mến)
Key terms: do you love me, yêu, yêu mến, feed my sheep
Review routing: Automated review
A translation-technique flag rather than a doctrinal collision: Vietnamese lacks two distinct verbs paralleling ἀγαπάω/φιλέω, so a translator’s note is recommended rather than doctrinal correction; the pastoral force of Christ restoring Peter after his denial is independent of the lexical distinction.
