Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — 1 Timothy (Full Book, Koine Greek)
Methodology
This analysis proceeds in two parts, per PRD Phase 1 Step 1:
- Core passage verse-by-verse treatment — 1 Timothy 3:1-13 (Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons), the theological anchor of this curriculum.
- Chapter-by-chapter treatment of the whole book, first to last, covering every chapter’s load-bearing theological vocabulary not already treated in the core passage (including 1 Timothy 3:14-16, which falls outside the core verse range but inside the core chapter).
Every term is assessed against the baseline Romans Language Package for Vietnamese. Where a term already exists in translation_memory.json, the baseline rendering is reused exactly and is marked “(baseline reuse).” New terms proposed here are candidate Phase 1 renderings for Phase 2 enforcement and for addition to translation memory.
Risk tiers follow the baseline’s four-tier framework (Critical / High / Medium / Low) and its established Vietnamese religious-collision categories: Mahayana Buddhist cosmology and merit theology, Confucian filial hierarchy, folk ancestor veneration (thờ cúng tổ tiên), folk spirit/deity practice, Taoist immortality cultivation, and Vietnamese Catholic institutional vocabulary.
PART A — CORE PASSAGE: 1 Timothy 3:1-13 (Verse-by-Verse)
Verse 1
Greek: Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος· Εἴ τις ἐπισκοπῆς ὀρέγεται, καλοῦ ἔργου ἐπιθυμεῖ.
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Faithful is the saying | πιστὸς ὁ λόγος (pistos ho logos) | “Trustworthy [is] the word/statement” | A fixed formula in the Pastoral Epistles (cf. 1:15; 4:9; 2 Tim 2:11; Titus 3:8) marking a reliable, authoritative teaching worth full acceptance | ”This is a faithful saying” (KJV), “The saying is trustworthy” (ESV), “This is a trustworthy saying” (NIV) | Introduces the qualifications list as settled apostolic teaching, not personal opinion | ”Lời nầy chắc chắn” / “Đây là lời đáng tin cậy”. Risk: Low. Reuses baseline sense of πιστός (faith-root); no folk-religious collision. |
| Overseer’s office | ἐπισκοπή (episkopē) | “Oversight, superintendence” (episkeptomai, “to look upon/inspect”) | The office/function of oversight, as distinct from ἐπίσκοπος (the office-holder) | “office of a bishop” (KJV), “overseer” (ESV), “elder” (NIV) | The formal, sought-after leadership office in the local congregation | ”chức vụ giám mục” / “chức coi sóc Hội Thánh”. Risk: High. See v.2 note on ἐπίσκοπος below; the abstract office-noun carries the same Catholic-diocesan collision risk as the concrete title. |
| Aspires | ὀρέγομαι (oregomai) | “To stretch oneself out toward, reach for” | Legitimate desire/ambition for a role, not self-promotion | ”desire” (KJV/ESV), “sets his heart on” (NIV) | A godly aspiration to serve, not worldly ambition for status | ”mong ước” / “ước ao”. Risk: Low. |
| Good work | καλὸν ἔργον (kalon ergon) | “Noble/good deed or task” | A commendable, beneficial undertaking | ”a good work” (KJV/ESV), “a noble task” (NIV) | The eldership itself is framed as service, not privilege | ”việc tốt lành” / “công việc cao quý”. Risk: Low. |
Verse 2
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| It is necessary | δεῖ (dei) | “It is binding/necessary” | Divine obligation, not mere preference | ”must” (all major versions) | Frames all following qualifications as non-negotiable requirements, not suggestions | ”cần phải” / “phải”. Risk: Low. |
| Overseer/bishop | ἐπίσκοπος (episkopos) | “One who watches over, superintendent” | Synonymous with πρεσβύτερος (elder) in the Pastorals and Titus 1:5-7; a local-congregation shepherding office, not a multi-parish administrative rank | ”bishop” (KJV), “overseer” (ESV), “elder” (NIV) | The pastoral shepherd-leader of a single local church, responsible for teaching and oversight | ”giám mục”. Risk: Critical. This is the established 1926 Vietnamese Protestant Bible rendering (matching the KJV “bishop” tradition it followed) and must be reused for consistency with existing Vietnamese Protestant hymnody and liturgical vocabulary. However, “giám mục” in contemporary Vietnamese religious usage is the standard term for the Roman Catholic diocesan bishop — a high hierarchical office overseeing multiple parishes within an institutional chain of authority. Every occurrence requires an explicit teaching note: 1 Timothy’s ἐπίσκοπος is functionally identical to πρεσβύτερος (elder, 5:17) — the overseer of one local congregation, not a multi-church diocesan administrator. Left unexplained, Vietnamese readers (especially those with any exposure to Catholic structures) will default to the diocesan model, importing an institutional hierarchy Paul does not describe. |
| Above reproach | ἀνεπίλημπτος (anepilēmptos) | “Not able to be laid hold of/seized upon [with an accusation]“ | Blameless in public reputation, not sinless perfection | ”blameless” (KJV/ESV), “above reproach” (NIV) | A publicly verifiable, not merely internal, standard | ”không chỗ trách được”. Risk: Medium. Distinguish from Confucian public-honor/face-preservation (giữ thể diện), which can be maintained by concealment; this is genuine, examined integrity. |
| Husband of one wife | μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα (mias gynaikos andra) | “A one-wife man” | Debated: monogamous fidelity vs. prohibition of remarriage/polygamy vs. general marital faithfulness | ”husband of one wife” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Marital exclusivity and fidelity as a leadership qualification | ”chồng chỉ một vợ”. Risk: High. Vietnamese historical practice of concubinage (thê thiếp, nhiều vợ) in pre-modern and some rural contexts makes this qualification culturally pointed; must be taught as a positive standard of covenant fidelity, not merely a legal technicality, and applied without ambiguity toward past or present polygamous unions among candidates. |
| Sober-minded | νηφάλιος (nēphalios) | “Free from the influence of wine; clear-headed” | Both literal sobriety and figurative mental clarity/vigilance | ”vigilant” (KJV), “sober-minded” (ESV), “temperate” (NIV) | Alert, undistracted spiritual clear-headedness | ”tiết độ” / “tỉnh thức”. Risk: Low. |
| Self-controlled | σώφρων (sōphrōn) | “Of sound mind; self-mastering” | Prudent self-governance of desires and judgment | ”sober” (KJV), “self-controlled” (ESV), “self-controlled” (NIV) | Disciplined inner life, distinct from mere outward rule-keeping | ”tiết độ” / “khôn ngoan chừng mực”. Risk: Low. |
| Respectable | κόσμιος (kosmios) | “Orderly, well-arranged” | Dignified, well-ordered manner of life | ”of good behaviour” (KJV), “respectable” (ESV), “respectable” (NIV) | Visible orderliness consistent with the gospel’s dignity | ”đứng đắn” / “nết na”. Risk: Low. |
| Hospitable | φιλόξενος (philoxenos) | “Loving/friendly to strangers” (philos + xenos) | Active welcome of outsiders, including traveling believers | ”given to hospitality” (KJV), “hospitable” (ESV/NIV) | Practical, sacrificial welcome, important in a house-church context | ”tiếp khách” / “có lòng tiếp đãi khách lạ”. Risk: Low. |
| Able to teach | διδακτικός (didaktikos) | “Skilled/apt in teaching” | Competence and aptitude for instructing others in doctrine | ”apt to teach” (KJV), “able to teach” (ESV/NIV) | Doctrinal teaching ability is a non-negotiable qualification, tying leadership directly to Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching | ”có tài dạy dỗ” / “có khả năng dạy dỗ”. Risk: Medium. Must be distinguished from generic rhetorical eloquence or Confucian scholarly erudition (học vấn cao); the competence in view is specifically the ability to teach sound apostolic doctrine. |
Verse 3
Greek: μὴ πάροινον, μὴ πλήκτην, ἀλλὰ ἐπιεικῆ, ἄμαχον, ἀφιλάργυρον,
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Not a drunkard | μὴ πάροινον (mē paroinon) | “Not beside/given to wine” | Habitual overindulgence in wine, not total abstinence per se | ”not given to wine” (KJV/ESV), “not a drunkard” (NIV) | Disqualifying vice for a public teaching office | ”không mê rượu”. Risk: Low. |
| Not violent | μὴ πλήκτην (mē plēktēn) | “Not a striker/bruiser” | Physical aggression or violent temper | ”not a striker” (KJV), “not violent” (ESV/NIV) | Excludes any pattern of physical aggression from leadership | ”không hung bạo”. Risk: Low. |
| Gentle | ἐπιεικής (epieikēs) | “Yielding, considerate, reasonable” | Forbearing gentleness that does not insist on rigid rights | ”patient” (KJV), “gentle” (ESV/NIV) | Christlike gentleness as a positive leadership virtue | ”hiền hòa” / “nhu mì”. Risk: Low. |
| Not quarrelsome | ἄμαχος (amachos) | “Not disposed to fight” (a + machē) | Peaceable disposition, avoiding needless conflict | ”not a brawler” (KJV), “not quarrelsome” (ESV/NIV) | Contrasts with the false teachers’ love of disputes (6:4) | “không hay tranh cạnh”. Risk: Low. |
| Not a lover of money | ἀφιλάργυρος (aphilargyros) | “Not money-loving” (a + philos + argyros) | Freedom from greed, especially relevant to handling church resources | ”not greedy of filthy lucre” (KJV), “not a lover of money” (ESV/NIV) | Anticipates 6:10’s “love of money is a root of all evils”; ties leadership integrity to Godliness and Contentment | ”không tham tiền bạc”. Risk: Medium. Must be distinguished from the culturally normal Vietnamese family expectation that a household head provide and accumulate for extended-family/ancestral obligations; the prohibition targets greed as a ruling love, not provision itself. |
Verse 4
Greek: τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου καλῶς προϊστάμενον, τέκνα ἔχοντα ἐν ὑποταγῇ μετὰ πάσης σεμνότητος·
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Managing his own household well | τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου καλῶς προϊστάμενον (tou idiou oikou kalōs proistamenon) | “Standing before/presiding over his own house well” | Household governance as a visible proving-ground for church leadership | ”ruleth well his own house” (KJV), “manage his own household well” (ESV/NIV) | Domestic leadership is a public, testable qualification for church oversight (cf. v.5) | “quản trị nhà riêng mình cho tốt”. Risk: Medium. Must be taught as loving spiritual headship modeled on Christ’s servant-leadership (cf. Eph 5), not a claim to authoritarian Confucian patriarchal rule (gia trưởng chế) as an end in itself. |
| Children in submission | τέκνα ἐν ὑποταγῇ (tekna en hypotagē) | “Children in subjection/orderly arrangement” | Respectful, orderly obedience of children within the household | ”children in subjection” (KJV), “children submissive” (ESV), “obey him” (NIV) | Evidence of a well-ordered household under godly leadership | ”con cái biết vâng phục”. Risk: Medium. Distinguish from đạo hiếu (Confucian filial piety) as a self-standing moral system; the submission in view flows from a home ordered under gospel authority, not filial duty as an independent religious obligation. |
| Dignity/reverence | σεμνότης (semnotēs) | “Gravity, seriousness, worthiness of respect” | Moral seriousness commanding respect | ”gravity” (KJV), “dignity” (ESV/NIV) | The tone of the whole household’s conduct, matching the leader’s character | ”sự nghiêm trang” / “sự đứng đắn”. Risk: Low. |
Verse 5
Greek: εἰ δέ τις τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου προστῆναι οὐκ οἶδεν, πῶς ἐκκλησίας θεοῦ ἐπιμελήσεται;
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Church of God | ἐκκλησία θεοῦ (ekklēsia theou) | “Assembly of God” | The gathered covenant congregation, God’s, not man’s, possession | ”the church of God” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Reuses core ecclesiology; household management is training-ground logic for care of God’s own assembly | ”Hội Thánh của Đức Chúa Trời”. Risk: Medium (baseline reuse — “Hội Thánh” + “Đức Chúa Trời”). Both terms are already in translation memory; combine per baseline rules. No new collision beyond what baseline already documents. |
| Take care of | ἐπιμελέομαι (epimeleomai) | “To take care of, attend to” | Attentive, responsible oversight (same root used of the Good Samaritan’s care, Luke 10:34-35) | “take care of” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Pastoral care modeled on compassionate, hands-on attention | ”coi sóc” / “chăm sóc”. Risk: Low. |
Verse 6
Greek: μὴ νεόφυτον, ἵνα μὴ τυφωθεὶς εἰς κρίμα ἐμπέσῃ τοῦ διαβόλου.
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Not a recent convert | νεόφυτος (neophytos) | “Newly planted” (neos + phyton) | A believer recently converted, lacking tested maturity | ”not a novice” (KJV), “not a recent convert” (ESV/NIV) | Maturity, not mere enthusiasm or knowledge, qualifies for oversight | ”người mới tin Chúa” / “tân tín đồ”. Risk: Low. |
| Puffed up (with conceit) | τυφωθείς (typhōtheis) | “Enveloped in smoke; clouded/inflated” | Metaphor for prideful self-inflation clouding judgment | ”lifted up with pride” (KJV), “puffed up with conceit” (ESV/NIV) | Pride, not lack of knowledge alone, is the specific danger of premature leadership | ”kiêu ngạo” / “tự cao”. Risk: Low. |
| Judgment/condemnation | κρίμα (krima) | “A judicial decision, verdict” | Here, God’s or the community’s condemning verdict, cf. judicial ruin | ”condemnation” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Real spiritual danger of disqualification and downfall, not a minor setback | ”sự phán xét” / “sự kết án”. Risk: Low. |
| The devil | διάβολος (diabolos) | “Slanderer, accuser” | Both the proper title for Satan and, adjectivally, “slanderous” (used of women in v.11) | “the devil” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | A real, personal spiritual adversary who exploits pride to bring down leaders | ”ma quỷ” / “Kẻ Ác”. Risk: High. Must be distinguished from the broad Vietnamese folk category of “ma” (wandering spirits of the improperly-honored dead, addressed in rites like cúng cô hồn); διάβολος names a specific personal, malevolent spiritual being opposed to God, not an ancestral or nature spirit requiring propitiation. |
Verse 7
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Good testimony | μαρτυρία καλή (martyria kalē) | “Good witness/reputation” | Reputation verifiable by those outside the church | ”good report” (KJV), “good reputation” (ESV/NIV) | The overseer’s credibility must extend beyond the congregation into wider society | ”danh tiếng tốt” / “chứng tốt”. Risk: Low. |
| Outsiders | οἱ ἔξωθεν (hoi exōthen) | “Those from outside” | Non-believers observing the church from without | ”them which are without” (KJV), “outsiders” (ESV/NIV) | Missional accountability — leadership integrity affects gospel witness (Evangelism doctrine) | “những người ở ngoài” / “người ngoài Hội Thánh”. Risk: Low. |
| Disgrace | ὀνειδισμός (oneidismos) | “Reproach, disgrace” | Public shame, socially damaging | ”reproach” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Genuine concern for corporate testimony, not mere personal embarrassment | ”sự sỉ nhục” / “điều ô danh”. Risk: Low. |
| Snare | παγίς (pagis) | “Trap, snare” (as for birds) | A trap laid by an adversary | ”snare” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | The devil actively exploits public disgrace to destroy leaders and the church’s witness | ”cái bẫy”. Risk: Low. |
Verse 8
Greek: Διακόνους ὡσαύτως σεμνούς, μὴ διλόγους, μὴ οἴνῳ πολλῷ προσέχοντας, μὴ αἰσχροκερδεῖς,
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deacons | διάκονος (diakonos) | “Servant, one who waits on tables/ministers” | A recognized church office of practical service (cf. Acts 6:1-6 background), distinct from the teaching/overseeing role of ἐπίσκοπος | ”deacons” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | A second, distinct order of recognized church leadership devoted to practical service | ”chấp sự”. Risk: Medium. “Chấp sự” is the established Vietnamese Protestant institutional term (used in “Ban Chấp sự” church-board structures). Risk: the institutional/administrative connotation of “chấp sự” can obscure the root meaning of διάκονος as humble table-service; a teaching note should recover the servant-heart origin of the office against any drift toward status-seeking. |
| Likewise | ὡσαύτως (hōsautōs) | “In the same way” | Signals a parallel, equally serious qualifications list to that for overseers | ”likewise” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Deacons are held to a standard of character as serious as elders’, though the function differs | ”cũng vậy” / “cũng như thế”. Risk: Low. |
| Dignified | σεμνός (semnos) | “Worthy of respect, dignified” | Same root as σεμνότης (v.4) | “grave” (KJV), “dignified” (ESV/NIV) | Character qualification paralleling elders | ”đáng trọng” / “nghiêm trang”. Risk: Low. |
| Not double-tongued | δίλογος (dilogos) | “Saying the same thing twice [differently]; two-faced in speech” | Insincerity, saying different things to different people | ”not doubletongued” (KJV), “not double-tongued” (ESV/NIV) | Integrity of speech required for a trusted service role handling church affairs/resources | ”không nói hai lời” / “không giả dối trong lời nói”. Risk: Low. |
| Not addicted to much wine | μὴ οἴνῳ πολλῷ προσέχοντας (mē oinō pollō prosechontas) | “Not giving attention to much wine” | Habitual drunkenness | ”not given to much wine” (KJV/ESV), “not given to drunkenness” (NIV) | Self-control required in a service role, paralleling v.3 | ”không mê rượu quá độ”. Risk: Low. |
| Not greedy for dishonest gain | αἰσχροκερδής (aischrokerdēs) | “Shamefully greedy for profit” (aischros + kerdos) | Sordid, dishonorable gain-seeking, especially relevant given deacons’ likely handling of church funds/charity | ”not greedy of filthy lucre” (KJV), “not greedy for dishonest gain” (ESV/NIV) | Financial integrity in a role tied to caring for the poor/widows (ch.5) | “không tham lợi bất chính”. Risk: Medium. Distinguish from generic Confucian merchant-thrift ethics; the concern is dishonorable exploitation of a trusted church-service role, directly connected to the “Care for Widows and the Household of Faith” doctrine where deacons likely administered relief funds. |
Verse 9
Greek: ἔχοντας τὸ μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως ἐν καθαρᾷ συνειδήσει.
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mystery of the faith | μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως (mystērion tēs pisteōs) | “The hidden-thing-now-revealed of the faith” | The core revealed content of Christian doctrine, once hidden in God’s plan, now disclosed (cf. 3:16’s hymn) | “the mystery of the faith” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Deacons must hold the full, revealed apostolic gospel content, not merely perform tasks competently — ties Church Leadership to Sound Doctrine and Guarding the Deposit | ”lẽ mầu nhiệm của đức tin” (μυστήριον = mầu nhiệm, new term; πίστις = đức tin, baseline reuse). Risk: High. “Mầu nhiệm” in Vietnamese religious vocabulary broadly denotes something wondrous, ineffable, or ritually sacred (used in Vietnamese Catholic sacramental theology for “the Mysteries,” and resonant with Buddhist/folk notions of esoteric truth accessible only through mystical experience or ritual initiation). Must be taught as a truth once hidden in God’s redemptive plan and now fully and clearly revealed in the gospel — not an ongoing riddle requiring meditative insight (ngộ) to access. |
| Clear conscience | καθαρὰ συνείδησις (kathara syneidēsis) | “Clean/pure conscience” | The inner moral faculty, cleansed and functioning rightly before God | ”pure conscience” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Integrity of inner life matching outward doctrinal fidelity | ”lương tâm trong sạch”. Risk: Medium. συνείδησις (“lương tâm”) is a well-established general Vietnamese ethical term, but must be taught here as the God-answerable inner faculty cleansed by the gospel (cf. Heb 9:14), not merely Confucian social conscience concerned with maintaining honor/face (thể diện) before others. |
Verse 10
Greek: καὶ οὗτοι δὲ δοκιμαζέσθωσαν πρῶτον, εἶτα διακονείτωσαν ἀνέγκλητοι ὄντες.
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Let them be tested | δοκιμάζεσθωσαν (dokimazesthōsan) | “Let them be examined/proved [as genuine]“ | Testing metal for genuineness by fire; here, a probationary character examination before appointment | ”let them…be proved” (KJV), “let them be tested” (ESV/NIV) | Institutes a formal process of vetting prior to office, not mere self-nomination | ”hãy được thử nghiệm” / “hãy được xem xét kỹ”. Risk: Low. |
| Blameless (having served) | ἀνέγκλητος (anenklētos) | “Not open to accusation” | Similar to ἀνεπίλημπτος (v.2), a synonym reinforcing the same public-integrity standard | ”blameless” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | The same rigorous character standard applies once service begins, not only at the point of testing | ”không chỗ trách được”. Risk: Low. (Same rendering as v.2’s ἀνεπίλημπτος is acceptable; both are synonyms for the same public-blamelessness concept.) |
Verse 11
Greek: γυναῖκας ὡσαύτως σεμνάς, μὴ διαβόλους, νηφαλίους, πιστὰς ἐν πᾶσιν.
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Women/wives | γυναῖκας (gynaikas) | “Women” (also “wives,” context-dependent — no distinct Greek word for “wife” apart from “woman”) | Genuinely ambiguous: (a) deacons’ wives, (b) women deacons/deaconesses as a distinct third group alongside overseers and deacons | ”their wives” (KJV/NIV interpretive gloss), “women” (ESV, literal) | A major, historically contested exegetical decision affecting church-office structure | ”các bà” / “những người đàn bà”. Risk: High. This is a genuinely ambiguous term requiring an explicit translator’s choice with a documented rationale (per Ambiguity Handling protocol). Rendering as “vợ của các chấp sự” (deacons’ wives) forecloses the deaconess reading; rendering as “những người đàn bà làm chấp sự” (women serving as deacons) forecloses the wives reading. Recommend a literal, non-committal “các bà” (“the women,” unqualified) with a mandatory footnote presenting both readings, flagged for human theologian review — this is a live debate among Vietnamese Protestant denominations regarding women’s diaconal service. |
| Slanderers | διαβόλους (diabolous, adj.) | ”Slanderous, devil-like in speech” | The adjectival use of διάβολος (cf. v.6); malicious gossip/slander | ”slanderers” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Same root as “the devil” — verbal malice is treated as devilish in character | ”không nói xấu người khác” / “không vu khống”. Risk: Low. |
| Sober-minded | νηφάλιος (nēphalios) | Same as v.2 | Clear-headed self-control | ”sober” (KJV), “sober-minded” (ESV/NIV) | Same standard of clear-headed self-mastery as overseers | ”tiết độ”. Risk: Low. (Consistent with v.2 rendering.) |
| Faithful in all things | πιστὰς ἐν πᾶσιν (pistas en pasin) | “Trustworthy/faithful in all things” | Reliability across every area of responsibility | ”faithful in all things” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Comprehensive trustworthiness required for this role of service | ”trung tín trong mọi sự”. Risk: Low (πιστός/đức tin family — baseline-consistent root). |
Verse 12
Greek: διάκονοι ἔστωσαν μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρες, τέκνων καλῶς προϊστάμενοι καὶ τῶν ἰδίων οἴκων.
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Husband of one wife | μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρες (mias gynaikos andres) | Same construction as v.2 | Same marital-fidelity qualification, now applied to deacons | ”husbands of one wife” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Confirms deacons are held to the identical marital-fidelity standard as overseers | ”chồng chỉ một vợ”. Risk: High (same as v.2). |
| Managing children and households well | τέκνων καλῶς προϊστάμενοι καὶ τῶν ἰδίων οἴκων (teknōn kalōs proistamenoi kai tōn idiōn oikōn) | Same construction as v.4 | Domestic governance as proving-ground, extended to deacons | ”ruling their children and their own houses well” (KJV), “managing their children and their households well” (ESV/NIV) | Same household-integrity logic as overseer qualifications | ”quản trị con cái và nhà riêng mình cho tốt”. Risk: Medium (same considerations as v.4). |
Verse 13
Greek: οἱ γὰρ καλῶς διακονήσαντες βαθμὸν ἑαυτοῖς καλὸν περιποιοῦνται ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Having served well | καλῶς διακονήσαντες (kalōs diakonēsantes) | “Having ministered/served well” | Verb form of διάκονος, faithful discharge of the office | ”used the office…well” (KJV), “served well” (ESV/NIV) | Faithful service, not office-holding itself, is what is rewarded | ”hầu việc cách tốt lành” / “chấp sự trung tín”. Risk: Low. |
| Good standing | βαθμὸν καλόν (bathmon kalon) | “A good step/rank” (literally, a “threshold” or “degree”) | Standing, reputation, or spiritual progress gained through faithful service | ”good degree” (KJV), “good standing” (ESV), “well” / “respect” (NIV, paraphrastic) | A God-given commendation and increased confidence/boldness in ministry, not a merit-earned promotion in a works-based system | ”địa vị tốt” / “sự tin nhiệm cao hơn”. Risk: Medium. Must be carefully distinguished from Buddhist merit-accumulation (công đức tích lũy, already rejected in the baseline’s imputed_righteousness entry) — this “gain” is relational confidence and reputation within grace-based service, not spiritual merit banked toward salvation or a better rebirth. |
| Faith in Christ Jesus | πίστις ἡ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ (pistis hē en Christō Iēsou) | “The faith [that is] in Christ Jesus” | Faith with Christ as its specific, named object | ”faith which is in Christ Jesus” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Grounds the entire qualifications passage back in the gospel of salvation by faith in Christ, not achievement | ”đức tin trong Đấng Christ Jêsus” (baseline reuse: đức tin, Đức Chúa Giê-xu/Đấng Christ). Risk: Medium (baseline reuse; low incremental risk). |
PART B — WHOLE-BOOK CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY
Chapter 1 — Sound Doctrine, Paul’s Testimony, and the Charge to Timothy
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grace, mercy, peace | χάρις, ἔλεος, εἰρήνη (charis, eleos, eirēnē, 1:2) | “Gift-favor, compassion, wholeness” | Standard Pauline greeting triad, expanded from the usual “grace and peace” to include mercy | ”grace, mercy, and peace” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | God’s threefold disposition toward Timothy as a “true child in the faith” | Grace = “ân điển” (baseline reuse, High risk per baseline). Peace = “sự bình an” (baseline reuse, Medium risk). Mercy = “sự thương xót” (new term, Risk: Medium — distinguish God’s compassion toward the guilty, freely extended through Christ, from Buddhist compassion/từ bi operating within a karma-relieving framework, and from the transactional mercy sometimes sought from ancestors or deities in folk petition). |
| True child in the faith | γνήσιον τέκνον ἐν πίστει (gnēsion teknon en pistei, 1:2) | “Genuine/legitimate child in [the] faith” | Spiritual, mentor-disciple parent-child relationship, not biological or legal | ”my own son in the faith” (KJV), “true child in the faith” (ESV/NIV) | Builds on but is distinct from the Adoption doctrine (Romans 8) — a discipleship relationship, not adoption into God’s family | ”con thật trong đức tin”. Risk: Medium. Must be distinguished from Confucian master-disciple lineage transmission (as in Buddhist dharma-lineage or Confucian scholarly succession), which typically confers institutional authority by pedigree; Paul’s language is relational and gospel-shaped, not a formal lineage-transmission credential. |
| Different doctrine | ἑτεροδιδασκαλέω (heterodidaskaleō, 1:3) | “To teach otherwise/differently” | A compound coined by Paul for teaching that deviates from apostolic doctrine | ”teach no other doctrine” (KJV), “teach a different doctrine” (ESV/NIV) | Central term for the curriculum’s “Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching" | "dạy đạo khác” / “dạy giáo lý khác”. Risk: Medium. Low direct folk-religious collision, but must be taught with reference to a fixed, apostolic, once-given standard of true doctrine (see Guarding the Deposit doctrine, 6:20), not one valid teaching among many equally legitimate religious paths, as Vietnamese religious pluralism (Buddhism/Confucianism/Catholicism/Cao Đài/Đạo Mẫu coexisting) might otherwise suggest. |
| Myths | μῦθος (mythos, 1:4) | “Story, tale, fable” | Speculative, non-historical religious narrative | ”fables” (KJV), “myths” (ESV/NIV) | Distraction from the gospel through speculative religious storytelling | ”truyện hoang đường” / “chuyện thần thoại”. Risk: Medium. Must not be read as a blanket condemnation of Vietnamese/Chinese-origin traditional legendary narrative (thần thoại, truyền thuyết) as a genre; the target is specifically speculative teaching that displaces sound apostolic doctrine, not folklore or cultural memory as such. |
| Genealogies | γενεαλογία (genealogia, 1:4) | “Tracing of lineage/descent” | Endless, speculative ancestral lineage-tracing tied to false teaching (likely proto-Gnostic speculation) | “genealogies” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | A specific feature of the false teaching Paul opposes at Ephesus | ”gia phả” / “chuyện gia hệ dài dòng”. Risk: High. Vietnamese culture places deep, positive value on family genealogical records (gia phả) and lineage identity as central to ancestor veneration (thờ cúng tổ tiên) and family honor. This passage must carry an explicit teaching note: Paul condemns speculative, endless mythical genealogies fueling false doctrine — not the cultural practice of keeping or honoring one’s family lineage record. Misapplied without this distinction, the passage could be misheard as Scripture devaluing gia phả itself, a serious pastoral and cultural sensitivity. |
| Love from a pure heart, good conscience, sincere faith | ἀγάπη ἐκ καθαρᾶς καρδίας καὶ συνειδήσεως ἀγαθῆς καὶ πίστεως ἀνυποκρίτου (1:5) | “Love out of a clean heart and a good conscience and unhypocritical faith” | The intended positive goal of “the charge,” contrasted with the false teachers’ myths/genealogies | ”love out of a pure heart…” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Right doctrine is meant to produce love, not merely correct information | Conscience = “lương tâm” (see core-passage 3:9 note, Medium risk); Faith = “đức tin” (baseline reuse). Risk: Low-Medium overall. |
| Law (lawfully) | νόμος (nomos, 1:8-9) | “Law” | The Mosaic Law, its proper use versus misuse by false teachers | ”law” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | (baseline reuse: “luật pháp”) | “luật pháp”. Risk: Medium (baseline reuse). |
| Sound doctrine | ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία (hygiainousa didaskalia, 1:10) | “Healthy/health-giving teaching” | Doctrine that produces spiritual health, opposed to teaching that spreads like disease (cf. 2 Tim 2:17’s “gangrene”) | “sound doctrine” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Foundational phrase for the whole letter’s central doctrine, Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching | ”giáo lý lành mạnh” / “sự dạy dỗ lành mạnh” (new term, Risk: Medium — “giáo lý” must be anchored as revealed, apostolic teaching rooted in Scripture, not treated as one denominational “giáo lý” among the many co-existing religious systems’ teachings in Vietnam’s pluralistic religious landscape). |
| Glorious gospel | εὐαγγέλιον τῆς δόξης (euangelion tēs doxēs, 1:11) | “Gospel of the glory” | The gospel entrusted to Paul, characterized by God’s glory | ”glorious gospel” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | (baseline reuse: gospel = “Tin Lành”; glory = “sự vinh hiển”) | “Tin Lành về sự vinh hiển”. Risk: Medium (baseline reuse). |
| Chief of sinners | πρῶτος ἁμαρτωλῶν (prōtos hamartōlōn, 1:15) | “First/foremost of sinners” | Paul’s self-description as the paradigm recipient of grace toward the greatest offender | ”chief” (KJV), “foremost” (ESV), “worst” (NIV) | Grace is sufficient even for the most extreme case, encouraging assurance | Sin = “tội lỗi” (baseline reuse). Risk: Low (baseline reuse). |
| Patience/longsuffering | μακροθυμία (makrothymia, 1:16) | “Long-temperedness, forbearance” | God’s patience displayed toward Paul as a pattern for others | ”longsuffering” (KJV), “perfect patience” (ESV), “patience” (NIV) | God’s forbearance as grounds for others’ hope of salvation | ”sự nhịn nhục” / “lòng khoan nhẫn”. Risk: Low. |
| King eternal, immortal, invisible | βασιλεὺς τῶν αἰώνων, ἄφθαρτος, ἀόρατος (1:17) | “King of the ages, incorruptible, unseen” | A doxological description of God’s transcendent nature | ”King eternal, immortal, invisible” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Anticipates the fuller doxology of 6:15-16; foreshadows the ἀθανασία (immortality) collision-risk term treated below in ch. 6 | ”Vua muôn đời, không hư nát, không thấy được”. Risk: High — see ch. 6 note on ἀθανασία; incorruptibility/immortality language must not evoke Taoist “trường sinh bất tử” (immortality achieved through cultivation). |
| Wage the good warfare | στρατεύῃ τὴν καλὴν στρατείαν (strateuē tēn kalēn strateian, 1:18) | “Wage the good military campaign” | Military metaphor for persevering faithfully in ministry | ”war a good warfare” (KJV), “fight the good fight” (ESV/NIV) | Anticipates 6:12’s “fight the good fight of faith" | "đánh trận tốt lành” / “chiến đấu trong cuộc chiến tốt lành”. Risk: Low. |
| Shipwrecked (concerning the faith) | περὶ τὴν πίστιν ἐναυάγησαν (peri tēn pistin enauagēsan, 1:19) | “Suffered shipwreck concerning the faith” | Metaphor: abandoning a good conscience leads to catastrophic loss of faith | ”concerning faith have made shipwreck” (KJV), “suffered shipwreck in regard to the faith” (ESV/NIV) | A vivid warning that rejecting conscience is not a minor lapse but a total wreck | ”làm chìm đắm đức tin” / “đắm mất đức tin”. Risk: Low. |
| Delivered to Satan | παρέδωκα τῷ Σατανᾷ (paredōka tō Satana, 1:20) | “Handed over to Satan” | Disciplinary excommunication, removing protective fellowship, likely for corrective purposes | ”delivered unto Satan” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Serious church discipline for those who reject sound doctrine (Hymenaeus, Alexander) | Satan = “Sa-tan” (established transliteration). Risk: Low-Medium; ensure this is read as formal church discipline, not a curse or malediction ritual analogous to folk cursing practices. |
Chapter 2 — Public Worship, Prayer, and the One Mediator
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings | δεήσεις, προσευχάς, ἐντεύξεις, εὐχαριστίας (deēseis, proseuchas, enteuxeis, eucharistias, 2:1) | “Petitions, prayers [general], intercessions, thanksgivings” | Four near-synonymous prayer terms stacked for comprehensive emphasis | ”supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Establishes the Public Worship and Prayer doctrine’s comprehensive scope, including prayer for civil authorities | Supplications = “lời khẩn nguyện”; Prayers = “lời cầu nguyện”; Intercessions = “sự cầu thay” (baseline reuse, Critical risk) — must retain the baseline’s mandatory teaching note distinguishing Christ’s/the Spirit’s/believers’ intercession from cầu xin tổ tiên (petitioning deceased ancestors at the family altar); Thanksgivings = “sự cảm tạ” (baseline reuse, Low risk). |
| Kings and all who are in authority | βασιλεῖς καὶ πάντων τῶν ἐν ὑπεροχῇ ὄντων (basileis kai pantōn tōn en hyperochē ontōn, 2:2) | “Kings and all those existing in a position of prominence” | Prayer duty extends to civil rulers, regardless of their disposition toward the church | ”kings, and for all that are in authority” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Church’s posture toward civil government — prayer, not political agitation | ”các vua và mọi người có quyền cao”. Risk: Low-Medium; sensitive in any political context but doctrinally straightforward. |
| Quiet and peaceable life | ἤρεμον καὶ ἥσυχον βίον (ēremon kai hēsychon bion, 2:2) | “Tranquil and quiet life” | The desired social outcome of prayer for rulers | ”quiet and peaceable life” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Not political power but ordered stability for gospel witness | ”cuộc sống yên tĩnh và bình an”. Risk: Low. |
| Godliness and dignity | εὐσέβεια καὶ σεμνότης (eusebeia kai semnotēs, 2:2) | “Godly reverence and dignified seriousness” | (see full treatment of εὐσέβεια under Ch. 4/6 and the Glossary; σεμνότης as in 3:4) | “godliness and honesty” (KJV), “godliness and dignity” (ESV/NIV) | Introduces εὐσέβεια, the letter’s central virtue-term, for the first time | εὐσέβεια = “sự tin kính” (new term, Risk: High — full treatment in Glossary and Ch. 4/6 notes below). |
| God our Savior | θεὸς ὁ σωτὴρ ἡμῶν (theos ho sōtēr hēmōn, 2:3) | “God our Savior/Deliverer” | God as the ultimate source and agent of salvation | ”God our Saviour” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Ties directly to the Salvation doctrine (baseline Critical risk) | Savior = “Cứu Chúa” (new term paired with baseline salvation root; Risk: Critical — must never drift toward sự giải thoát/Buddhist liberation imagery; “Cứu Chúa” specifically names God/Christ as the personal Rescuer, consistent with baseline’s sự cứu rỗi). |
| One God, one mediator | εἷς θεός, εἷς μεσίτης (heis theos, heis mesitēs, 2:5) | “One God, one go-between/intermediary” | Foundational monotheism plus the unique, singular mediatorial role of Christ | ”one God, one mediator” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Core thesis of the Christ as the One Mediator doctrine | μεσίτης = “Đấng Trung Gian” (new term, Risk: Critical — see full treatment in Glossary; must be distinguished from folk spirit-mediums/đồng, Catholic saintly intercessors, and ancestor-intermediaries). |
| Man Christ Jesus | ἄνθρωπος Χριστὸς Ἰησοῦς (anthrōpos Christos Iēsous, 2:5) | “The man Christ Jesus” | Affirms Christ’s full, genuine humanity as qualifying him uniquely as mediator | ”the man Christ Jesus” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Connects to the Romans-baseline Incarnation and Humanity of Christ doctrines | ”Đấng Christ Jêsus, là người” (baseline reuse for names; humanity affirmed explicitly). Risk: High — must not be read through hóa thân (temporary divine manifestation); Christ’s humanity is real, permanent, historical (consistent with baseline’s Incarnation entry). |
| Ransom | ἀντίλυτρον (antilytron, 2:6) | “A ransom-price paid in exchange” (anti + lytron) | The price paid to free captives/slaves, applied to Christ’s atoning death | ”a ransom” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Christ’s substitutionary, once-for-all payment for sin | ”giá chuộc” (new term, Risk: Medium — see Glossary; must not evoke a payment to satisfy karmic debt or ancestral obligation). |
| Testimony given at the proper time | τὸ μαρτύριον καιροῖς ἰδίοις (to martyrion kairois idiois, 2:6) | “The testimony in its own/proper times” | God’s sovereign historical timing of gospel proclamation | ”to be testified in due time” (KJV), “given at the proper time” (ESV/NIV) | Ties to Fulfillment of Prophecy doctrine (baseline: linear, historical, not cyclical) | “lời chứng vào thời điểm đã định”. Risk: Medium (baseline-consistent linear-history framing). |
| Lifting holy hands, without anger or quarreling | ἐπαίροντας ὁσίους χεῖρας χωρὶς ὀργῆς καὶ διαλογισμοῦ (epairontas hosious cheiras chōris orgēs kai dialogismou, 2:8) | “Raising devout/holy hands without wrath and disputing” | Prescribed posture and disposition for public prayer by men | ”lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Public worship instruction | Holy = “thánh”/“thánh sạch” (baseline reuse for “holy”). Risk: Low (baseline reuse). |
| Respectable apparel, modesty, self-control | καταστολῇ κοσμίῳ μετὰ αἰδοῦς καὶ σωφροσύνης (katastolē kosmiō meta aidous kai sōphrosynēs, 2:9) | “Orderly/decent clothing with modesty and self-control” | Instruction on women’s public dress in worship | ”modest apparel…shamefacedness and sobriety” (KJV), “respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control” (ESV/NIV) | Public worship propriety, not merely fashion — related to κόσμιος (3:2) | “cách phục sức đứng đắn với sự khiêm nhường và tiết độ”. Risk: Medium. Vietnamese culture holds strong, largely compatible modesty norms; risk lies in over-literalizing 1st-century dress specifics rather than the underlying modesty/self-control principle. |
| Learn quietly with all submissiveness; not to teach or exercise authority over a man | ἐν ἡσυχίᾳ…διδάσκειν δὲ γυναικὶ οὐκ ἐπιτρέπω, οὐδὲ αὐθεντεῖν ἀνδρός (2:11-12) | “In quietness…I do not permit a woman to teach, nor to have-authority-over/dominate a man” | αὐθεντέω is a rare word: “to exercise authority” or, in some usage, “to domineer/usurp authority” — genuinely contested lexically | ”usurp authority” (KJV), “exercise authority” (ESV), “assume authority” (NIV) | A historically and theologically contested passage on gender and church-teaching roles | Teach = “dạy dỗ” (baseline-adjacent); αὐθεντέω = “cầm quyền trên” or “lấn quyền trên” (new term, Risk: High — significant scholarly disagreement over whether this denotes ordinary authority or domineering/usurped authority; flagged for mandatory human theologian review given (a) genuine lexical ambiguity and (b) heightened sensitivity in Vietnamese Confucian-patriarchal culture where either an overly restrictive or overly permissive rendering could reinforce or subvert existing gender hierarchies in ways beyond the text’s own scope). |
| Saved through childbearing | σωθήσεται δὲ διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας (sōthēsetai de dia tēs teknogonias, 2:15) | “She will be saved/preserved through childbearing” | Highly debated: (a) spiritual salvation conditioned on motherhood [problematic], (b) physical preservation through childbirth, (c) salvation through “the childbearing” = the birth of Christ, (d) sanctified fulfillment within the domestic calling | ”saved in childbearing” (KJV), “saved through childbearing” (ESV), “will be saved through childbearing” (NIV) | Must never be read as contradicting salvation by grace through faith alone | Salvation root = “sự cứu rỗi” (baseline reuse). Risk: Critical. This phrase must never be rendered or taught in a way suggesting salvation is earned or secured by the act/role of childbearing, which would directly contradict the baseline’s Critical-risk Salvation doctrine (sola gratia, sola fide) and could be misread as validating a merit-based framework parallel to Buddhist karmic merit accumulation through fulfilling one’s assigned role. Requires a mandatory theologian’s teaching note presenting the range of scholarly interpretation and firmly excluding any works-based salvation reading. |
Chapter 3 (continued) — 1 Timothy 3:14-16: The Church as Pillar of Truth and the Mystery of Godliness
(Verses 3:1-13 receive full verse-by-verse treatment in Part A above. The remainder of the chapter, outside the core-passage range, is treated here.)
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Household of God | οἴκῳ θεοῦ (oikō theou, 3:15) | “House/household of God” | Family metaphor for the church, paired with the architectural metaphor following | ”house of God” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Frames the church as God’s own family, connecting to Care for Widows and the Household of Faith doctrine | ”nhà của Đức Chúa Trời” (baseline reuse: Đức Chúa Trời). Risk: Medium. |
| Church of the living God | ἐκκλησία θεοῦ ζῶντος (ekklēsia theou zōntos, 3:15) | “Assembly of the living God” | Reinforces God’s personal, active nature against any impersonal deity concept | ”the church of the living God” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Distinguishes God from an impersonal cosmic force | ”Hội Thánh của Đức Chúa Trời hằng sống” (baseline reuse: Hội Thánh, Đức Chúa Trời). Risk: Medium — reinforces baseline’s caution against Đức Chúa Trời collapsing into impersonal Ông Trời folk usage. |
| Pillar and buttress/foundation of the truth | στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας (stylos kai hedraiōma tēs alētheias, 3:15) | “Pillar and support/foundation of the truth” | Architectural metaphor: the church upholds and displays revealed truth publicly, like a pillar in a temple | ”the pillar and ground of the truth” (KJV), “a pillar and buttress of the truth” (ESV), “the pillar and foundation of the truth” (NIV) | Central statement of the Church as Pillar of Truth doctrine | ”cột trụ và nền của lẽ thật” (new term, Risk: Medium — see Glossary; the church upholds and guards a truth revealed once by God, it does not generate or evolve that truth as a living, self-authenticating tradition the way Confucian classical transmission through successive sages is sometimes understood). |
| Mystery of godliness | τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον (to tēs eusebeias mystērion, 3:16) | “The mystery of godliness/piety” | The revealed content of the Christian confession, summarized in the hymn that follows | ”the mystery of godliness” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Introduces the earliest known Christological confession/hymn embedded in the NT | μυστήριον = “lẽ mầu nhiệm” (see 3:9 note, Risk: High); εὐσέβεια = “sự tin kính” (see Glossary, Risk: High). Combined phrase: “lẽ mầu nhiệm của sự tin kính”. |
| He was manifested in the flesh | ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί (ephanerōthē en sarki, 3:16) | “Was made visible/manifest in flesh” | The Incarnation stated in creedal shorthand | ”manifest in the flesh” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Directly parallels the baseline’s Critical-risk Incarnation doctrine | ”được tỏ ra trong xác thịt” — paired with baseline’s “Ngôi Lời trở nên xác thịt” concept. Risk: Critical. Must never be rendered with hóa thân (a deity’s repeatable/temporary manifestation); this affirms one, historical, permanent assumption of human flesh, exactly per the baseline’s Incarnation entry. |
| Vindicated/justified in the Spirit | ἐδικαιώθη ἐν πνεύματι (edikaiōthē en pneumati, 3:16) | “Was declared righteous/vindicated in [the] Spirit” | Christ’s resurrection-vindication by the Spirit, not personal moral justification (he had no sin) | “justified in the Spirit” (KJV), “vindicated by the Spirit” (ESV), “vindicated by the Spirit” (NIV) | Distinct sense of δικαιόω applied to Christ himself, not the believer — requires care not to conflate with the baseline’s believer-justification entry | Root shares baseline’s “sự xưng công bình” vocabulary but applied Christologically. Risk: High — must be taught as God’s vindicating declaration of Christ’s righteousness (supremely displayed in the resurrection), distinct from (though related to) the imputation of righteousness to believers (baseline: sự công bình được kể cho). |
| Seen by angels…preached among the nations…believed on in the world…taken up in glory | ὤφθη ἀγγέλοις, ἐκηρύχθη ἐν ἔθνεσιν, ἐπιστεύθη ἐν κόσμῳ, ἀνελήμφθη ἐν δόξῃ (3:16) | “Was seen by angels, was proclaimed among nations, was believed on in [the] world, was taken up in glory” | The remaining four lines of the hymn, summarizing the gospel’s cosmic and historical scope | ”seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory” (KJV/ESV/NIV, near-identical) | Ties Christ’s ascension/glory to the Mission to Nations and Deity of Christ doctrines | Gentiles/nations = “dân ngoại” (baseline reuse); Glory = “sự vinh hiển” (baseline reuse). Risk: Medium (baseline reuse). |
Chapter 4 — False Asceticism, Training in Godliness, and Timothy’s Example
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Later times… depart from the faith | ἐν ὑστέροις καιροῖς… ἀποστήσονταί τινες τῆς πίστεως (4:1) | “In later times…some will fall away from the faith” | Eschatological warning of apostasy | ”in the latter times some shall depart from the faith” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Connects Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching to end-times apostasy | Faith = “đức tin” (baseline reuse). Risk: Medium. |
| Deceitful spirits and teachings of demons | πνεύμασιν πλάνοις καὶ διδασκαλίαις δαιμονίων (pneumasin planois kai didaskaliais daimoniōn, 4:1) | “Deceiving spirits and teachings of demons” | Attributes false doctrine to a personal demonic source, not merely human error | ”seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils” (KJV), “deceitful spirits and teachings of demons” (ESV/NIV) | Reinforces that false teaching has a spiritual-warfare dimension | δαιμόνιον = “quỷ” / “tà linh” (new term, Risk: High — see Glossary; must be distinguished from the broad Vietnamese folk-spirit category of “ma” (restless/hungry ghosts of the improperly-honored dead) and from “thần” (tutelary/local deities); biblical demons are specifically fallen, personal, malevolent beings in active rebellion against God, the source named here for deceptive teaching). |
| Seared conscience | κεκαυστηριασμένων τὴν ἰδίαν συνείδησιν (kekaustēriasmenōn tēn idian syneidēsin, 4:2) | “Having had their own conscience branded/cauterized” | A conscience rendered insensitive through repeated sin, like scar tissue from a branding iron | ”conscience seared with a hot iron” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Extreme consequence of persistent false teaching and hypocrisy | ”lương tâm chai lì” / “lương tâm bị cháy”. Risk: Low-Medium (see 3:9 συνείδησις note). |
| Forbidding marriage, requiring abstinence from foods | κωλυόντων γαμεῖν, ἀπέχεσθαι βρωμάτων (kōlyontōn gamein, apechesthai brōmatōn, 4:3) | “Forbidding to marry, [commanding] to abstain from foods” | The specific ascetic false teaching Paul confronts: mandatory celibacy and food restriction as marks of superior spirituality | ”forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats” (KJV), “forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods” (ESV/NIV) | Directly relevant to converts from an ascetic religious background who may import similar assumptions | Risk: Critical. Marriage-prohibition intersects Vietnamese Buddhist monastic celibacy (xuất gia) as a culturally honored “higher path”; food-abstinence intersects Vietnamese Buddhist vegetarian fasting practice (ăn chay), widely understood in Buddhist teaching to accumulate merit and avoid killing-karma. This passage’s target is the false doctrine that abstaining from marriage or certain foods is required for or confers spiritual superiority/purity/merit — every creature of God is good and received with thanksgiving (4:4). This must be taught with great pastoral care to (a) firmly reject any merit-based framework for these practices while (b) not blanket-condemning believers who, for non-doctrinal cultural or health reasons, remain single or abstain from certain foods. Mandatory theologian review. |
| Sanctified by the word of God and prayer | ἁγιάζεται γὰρ διὰ λόγου θεοῦ καὶ ἐντεύξεως (hagiazetai gar dia logou theou kai enteuxeōs, 4:5) | “For it is sanctified/made holy through God’s word and prayer/petition” | Food is rendered fit for grateful use through Scripture and prayer, not through ritual purity codes | ”sanctified by the word of God and prayer” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Ties to Sanctification (baseline reuse) and Prayer doctrines | Sanctified = “được nên thánh” (baseline reuse: sự nên thánh). ἔντευξις here again = “sự cầu thay”-family term (see Ch. 2 note; here in the sense of “petition/prayer” over a meal) — Risk: Medium, distinguish from any ritual food-blessing offered to ancestors or spirits (cúng, offering food to ancestral altars), which this passage’s prayer-over-food is not. |
| Good minister of Christ Jesus | καλὸς διάκονος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ (kalos diakonos Christou Iēsou, 4:6) | “Good servant/minister of Christ Jesus” | General ministerial service, not the formal office of ch. 3 | ”good minister” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Distinguishes the general sense of διάκονος (service) from the formal office sense in 3:8-13 | ”người đầy tớ tốt của Đấng Christ Jêsus” — note the deliberate difference from “chấp sự” (the formal office rendering) to preserve the distinction between office and general ministry sense. Risk: Medium (translation-consistency risk: workers must not conflate this general usage with the formal office term). |
| Irreverent, silly myths | βεβήλους καὶ γραώδεις μύθους (bebēlous kai graōdeis mythous, 4:7) | “Profane and old-womanish myths” | Dismissive characterization of the false ascetic teaching’s speculative content | ”profane and old wives’ fables” (KJV), “irreverent, silly myths” (ESV/NIV) | Reuses μῦθος (see 1:4 note) | “truyện hoang đường nhạt nhẽo”. Risk: Medium (same as 1:4 note). |
| Train yourself for godliness | γύμναζε σεαυτὸν πρὸς εὐσέβειαν (gymnaze seauton pros eusebeian, 4:7) | “Exercise/train yourself toward godliness” | Athletic-training metaphor applied to spiritual discipline | ”exercise thyself…unto godliness” (KJV), “train yourself for godliness” (ESV/NIV) | Central verse for the Godliness and Contentment doctrine — godliness is disciplined, not passive | γυμνάζω = “tập luyện” (Low risk); εὐσέβεια = “sự tin kính” (Risk: High, see Glossary — this training-metaphor context risks being assimilated to Buddhist meditative “tu tập” self-cultivation disciplines aimed at enlightenment/merit; must be taught as grace-empowered discipline aimed at knowing and honoring the true God, not self-generated spiritual attainment). |
| Godliness is profitable for all things, holding promise for the present life and also the life to come | ἡ…εὐσέβεια πρὸς πάντα ὠφέλιμός ἐστιν, ἐπαγγελίαν ἔχουσα ζωῆς τῆς νῦν καὶ τῆς μελλούσης (4:8) | “…godliness is profitable toward all things, having promise of the life now and the [life] about to be” | Contrasts limited value of physical training with godliness’s comprehensive present-and-future benefit | ”godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Ties present sanctified living to future eschatological hope | Life = “sự sống” (general); Promise = “lời hứa” (general). Risk: Low. |
| Savior of all people, especially of believers | σωτὴρ πάντων ἀνθρώπων, μάλιστα πιστῶν (sōtēr pantōn anthrōpōn, malista pistōn, 4:10) | “Savior of all men, most of all/especially believers” | A carefully qualified universalism: God’s saving disposition/provision is for all, but its effectual/experienced reality is for believers | ”the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Must be taught carefully alongside baseline Salvation doctrine to avoid universalist misreading | Savior = “Cứu Chúa”/“Đấng Cứu Rỗi” (baseline-adjacent, Risk: Critical, same reasoning as 2:3 note — must not be read as guaranteeing salvation apart from faith, preserving baseline’s sola fide framing). |
| Gift…through prophecy with the laying on of hands of the elders | χαρίσματος…διὰ προφητείας μετὰ ἐπιθέσεως τῶν χειρῶν τοῦ πρεσβυτερίου (charismatos…dia prophēteias meta epitheseōs tōn cheirōn tou presbyteriou, 4:14) | “Gift…through prophecy with the laying-on of the hands of the council of elders” | Timothy’s ordination/commissioning event, combining prophetic word and elder-body ritual act | ”the gift…by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery” (KJV), “…council of elders” (ESV/NIV) | Ties Spiritual Gifts (baseline reuse) to formal church commissioning practice, linking to the Qualifications for Church Leadership doctrine | χάρισμα = “ân tứ” (baseline reuse: ân tứ thuộc linh). ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν = “sự đặt tay” (new term, Risk: Medium — see Glossary; must be distinguished from folk healing-touch or spirit-medium ritual touch; it is a commissioning act accompanying prayer, not a channel of magical power). πρεσβυτέριον = “hội đồng trưởng lão” (new term, Risk: Medium — see Glossary). |
Chapter 5 — Widows, Elders, and the Household of Faith
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rebuke… exhort as father, mother, brothers, sisters | πρεσβυτέρῳ μὴ ἐπιπλήξῃς…παρακάλει ὡς πατέρα…ὡς μητέρας…ὡς ἀδελφούς…ὡς ἀδελφάς (5:1-2) | “Do not rebuke sharply an elder [older man]…appeal to/exhort as a father…as mothers…as brothers…as sisters” | Family-metaphor framework for pastoral relationships across age/gender within the congregation | ”rebuke not an elder…entreat him as a father” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Establishes the household-of-faith relational model underlying ch.5’s widow instructions | Exhort = “khích lệ” / “khuyên nài” (baseline reuse, context-sensitive per baseline note). Risk: Low (baseline reuse). |
| Honor widows | χήρας τίμα (chēras tima, 5:3) | “Honor widows” | Practical, material respect and support, not merely verbal regard | ”honour widows” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Foundational command for the Care for Widows doctrine | χήρα = “người goá bụa” (new term, Risk: Medium — see Glossary). τίμα = “hãy tôn kính” / “hãy trọng đãi”. Risk: Medium — deliberately avoid “hiếu kính” here (which is reserved in this analysis for Confucian filial-duty contexts) to prevent conflating gospel-motivated congregational honor with a filial-piety merit framework; render instead with a term emphasizing respectful material provision (trọng đãi/chăm sóc trọng thể). |
| Repay their parents/forebears | ἀμοιβὰς ἀποδιδόναι τοῖς προγόνοις (amoibas apodidonai tois progonois, 5:4) | “To give back recompense to their forebears/ancestors” | Practical financial/physical care owed by children/grandchildren to living parents and grandparents | ”requite their parents” (KJV), “make some return to their parents” (ESV), “repaying their parents and grandparents” (NIV) | Grounds church welfare policy: families care for their own first | πρόγονος = literally “ancestor/forebear.” Risk: CRITICAL. This is a term-level landmine unique to this curriculum. Rendering πρόγονοι with a term evoking tổ tiên (ancestors, the object of thờ cúng tổ tiên/ancestor veneration) risks the passage being heard as a biblical mandate to make ritual offerings, perform rites, or venerate deceased forebears — the opposite of the passage’s actual, practical meaning: living children/grandchildren providing tangible material support to living parents/grandparents. Recommend rendering as “cha mẹ và ông bà” (parents and grandparents, i.e., the immediately preceding living generations) rather than a term suggesting the broader ancestral-lineage/deceased-ancestor category, and require a mandatory theologian’s teaching note clarifying this is about the duty of the living toward the living, entirely distinct from ancestor-veneration ritual. |
| This is pleasing/acceptable in the sight of God | τοῦτο…ἀπόδεκτόν ἐστιν ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ (touto…apodekton estin enōpion tou theou, 5:4) | “This is acceptable/well-received before God” | Frames family care as an act of worship pleasing to God | ”good and acceptable before God” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Reinforces that ordinary family duty is itself a spiritual act | ”đẹp lòng Đức Chúa Trời” (baseline reuse: Đức Chúa Trời). Risk: Low (baseline reuse). |
| Widow indeed | ἡ ὄντως χήρα (hē ontōs chēra, 5:3, 5) | “The truly/really widow” | A technical designation for a widow genuinely without family support, qualifying for church assistance | ”widows indeed” (KJV), “the widow who is truly a widow” (ESV/NIV) | Establishes the church’s formal order/roll of supported widows | ”người quả phụ thật sự” / “người đàn bà goá thật”. Risk: Medium — must convey the technical, examined category (age 60+, tested character, per 5:9-10), not just the general state of widowhood. |
| Enrolled | καταλέγεσθαι (katalegesthai, 5:9) | “To be enrolled/listed” | Formal registration into the church’s supported-widows roster | ”let…be taken into the number” (KJV), “let a widow be enrolled” (ESV/NIV) | Institutional structure underlying the Care for Widows doctrine | ”được ghi vào danh sách”. Risk: Low. |
| Deny the faith | τὴν πίστιν ἤρνηται (tēn pistin ērnētai, 5:8) | “Has denied the faith” | Failing to provide for one’s own family is treated as a practical denial of the Christian faith, not merely a social failing | ”denied the faith” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Elevates family provision to a test of genuine faith | ”chối bỏ đức tin” (baseline reuse: đức tin). Risk: Medium (baseline reuse; note the weight this places on family provision within a culture where extended-family support is already a strong existing norm — reinforces rather than conflicts with Vietnamese values here). |
| Elders who rule/lead well, worthy of double honor | οἱ καλῶς προεστῶτες πρεσβύτεροι διπλῆς τιμῆς ἀξιούσθωσαν (5:17) | “The elders presiding/leading well are to be considered worthy of double honor” | Financial and respect-based compensation for faithful teaching elders | ”elders that rule well…double honour” (KJV), “elders who rule well…double honor” (ESV/NIV) | Ties Qualifications for Church Leadership to material support of teaching elders | πρεσβύτερος = “trưởng lão” (new term, Risk: Medium — see Glossary). Double honor = “sự tôn trọng gấp đôi” / support in the sense of honorarium. Risk: Medium. |
| The laborer deserves his wages | ἄξιος ὁ ἐργάτης τοῦ μισθοῦ αὐτοῦ (axios ho ergatēs tou misthou autou, 5:18) | “The worker [is] worthy of his wage” | Citation-style principle (echoing Deut 25:4 and Jesus’ teaching) justifying elder compensation | ”the labourer is worthy of his reward” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Practical financial principle for supporting church leadership | ”người làm công đáng được tiền lương”. Risk: Low. |
| Do not receive an accusation against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses | κατ’ … μὴ παραδέχου, ἐκτὸς εἰ μὴ ἐπὶ δύο ἢ τριῶν μαρτύρων (5:19) | Legal-procedural instruction requiring corroborating testimony before accepting accusations against elders | Judicial due-process principle applied to church discipline of leaders | ”against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Protects Qualifications for Church Leadership doctrine from unfounded accusation while still allowing for accountability (5:20’s public rebuke of persistent sinners) | “chứng cớ của hai hoặc ba người làm chứng”. Risk: Low. |
Chapter 6 — Slaves and Masters, False Teachers, Contentment, and the Charge to Guard the Deposit
| Term | Original (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slaves/bondservants under a yoke, masters | δοῦλοι ὑπὸ ζυγόν, δεσπόται (douloi hypo zygon, despotai, 6:1-2) | “Slaves under a yoke,” “masters/despots” | First-century household-slavery social structure, addressed pastorally rather than politically | ”servants…under the yoke,” “masters” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Ethical instruction within an existing social structure Paul does not here abolish; requires careful historical framing for modern readers | δοῦλος = “đầy tớ” / “nô lệ” (new term, Risk: Medium — requires a clear historical-context teaching note that this addresses first-century household slavery without either excusing the institution or being anachronistically read as a modern political endorsement; low direct folk-religious collision but high potential for misapplication without context). |
| Sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ | ὑγιαίνουσι λόγοις τοῖς τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (hygiainousi logois tois tou kyriou hēmōn Iēsou Christou, 6:3) | “Healthy words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ” | Reuses the ὑγιαίνω (“healthy”) root from 1:10’s “sound doctrine" | "wholesome words…of our Lord Jesus Christ” (KJV), “the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ” (ESV/NIV) | Anchors sound doctrine specifically in Christ’s own words/teaching, not merely apostolic tradition in the abstract | ”lời lành mạnh của Đức Chúa Giê-xu Christ chúng ta” (baseline reuse: Đức Chúa Giê-xu; Lord = Chúa). Risk: High (baseline reuse of Lordship of Christ doctrine). |
| Supposing that godliness is a means of gain | νομίζοντας πορισμὸν εἶναι τὴν εὐσέβειαν (nomizontas porismon einai tēn eusebeian, 6:5) | “Thinking godliness to be a means of profit/gain” | False teachers monetizing religious teaching | ”supposing that gain is godliness” (KJV), “imagining that godliness is a means of gain” (ESV/NIV) | Direct warning against prosperity-oriented false teaching | εὐσέβεια = “sự tin kính” (Risk: High, see Glossary); πορισμός = “phương tiện kiếm lợi” (new term, Risk: High — this warning must be taught with direct, explicit relevance to the widespread Vietnamese folk-religious pattern of transactional devotion at temples/pagodas/shrines — offering money or incense specifically to petition for wealth and fortune (cầu tài, cầu lộc) — since Paul is confronting the identical underlying error of treating devotion to God as a means to material gain, even though the cultural form differs). |
| Godliness with contentment is great gain | ἔστιν δὲ πορισμὸς μέγας ἡ εὐσέβεια μετὰ αὐτάρκειας (estin de porismos megas hē eusebeia meta autarkeias, 6:6) | “But godliness with contentment/self-sufficiency is great gain” | Redefines true “gain” as the inner sufficiency that accompanies godliness, not material profit | ”godliness with contentment is great gain” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | THE central verse for the Godliness and Contentment doctrine | εὐσέβεια = “sự tin kính” (Risk: High); αὐτάρκεια = “sự thỏa lòng” (new term, Risk: Critical — see Glossary; must NOT be rendered “tri túc” 知足, the loaded Buddhist virtue-term for contentment-with-few-desires achieved through disciplined detachment as a step toward liberation from craving; Paul’s contentment is trust-based satisfaction grounded in God’s provision and godliness, not self-achieved detachment from desire). |
| Love of money is a root of all evils | ῥίζα…πάντων τῶν κακῶν ἐστὶν ἡ φιλαργυρία (rhiza…pantōn tōn kakōn estin hē philargyria, 6:10) | “A root of all the evils is the love of money” | Note the Greek grammar: “a root,” not “the [sole] root” — money-love as a major, not exclusive, source of sin | ”the love of money is the root of all evil” (KJV), “a root of all kinds of evils” (ESV/NIV) | Ties directly to the ἀφιλάργυρος qualification for elders (3:3) | φιλαργυρία = “sự tham tiền bạc” (new term, Risk: Medium — see Glossary). |
| Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness | δίωκε δικαιοσύνην, εὐσέβειαν, πίστιν, ἀγάπην, ὑπομονήν, πραϋπαθίαν (6:11) | “Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience/endurance, gentleness” | A positive virtue-list contrasting with the false teachers’ vices | ”follow righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness” (KJV/ESV/NIV, near-identical) | Summarizes the positive alternative to false teaching | Righteousness = “sự công bình” (baseline reuse, High risk); Faith = “đức tin” (baseline reuse); Godliness = “sự tin kính” (Risk: High). Risk: Medium overall (mostly baseline reuse). |
| Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life | ἀγωνίζου τὸν καλὸν ἀγῶνα τῆς πίστεως, ἐπιλαβοῦ τῆς αἰωνίου ζωῆς (agōnizou ton kalon agōna tēs pisteōs, epilabou tēs aiōniou zōēs, 6:12) | “Fight/compete in the good contest of the faith, take hold of the eternal life” | Athletic-contest metaphor, echoing 1:18’s military metaphor | ”fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Reinforces perseverance theme | ”chiến đấu trận tốt lành của đức tin, nắm lấy sự sống đời đời”. Risk: Low. |
| The good confession | τὴν καλὴν ὁμολογίαν (tēn kalēn homologian, 6:12-13) | “The good confession/acknowledgment” | Both Timothy’s own public confession of faith (at baptism or ordination) and Christ’s own testimony before Pilate (v.13) | “professed a good profession” / “witnessed a good confession” (KJV), “made the good confession” (ESV/NIV) | Connects individual public confession of faith to Christ’s own faithful witness under trial | ὁμολογία = “lời tuyên xưng” / “lời xưng nhận” (new term, Risk: Medium — see Glossary; shares the “xưng” root with baseline’s sự xưng công bình; must be distinguished from a Buddhist ritual vow-taking (thọ giới/phát nguyện) which functions as a merit-generating religious commitment — this is public testimony to a truth already accomplished by grace, not a self-generating vow). |
| Blessed and only Sovereign, King of kings and Lord of lords | ὁ μακάριος καὶ μόνος δυνάστης, ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων (6:15) | “The blessed and only Potentate/Ruler, the King of the ones ruling and Lord of the ones lording” | Doxological title emphasizing God’s absolute, sole, and supreme sovereignty | ”the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords” (KJV/ESV/NIV) | Climactic doxology; ties to Deity of Christ / God doctrines | δυνάστης = “Đấng Chủ Quyền duy nhất” (new term, Risk: High — see Glossary; must not be assimilated to Ngọc Hoàng, the supreme Jade Emperor deity presiding over a bureaucratic pantheon in Vietnamese folk-Taoist cosmology; God’s sovereignty here is unique, exclusive, and absolute — not “chief among the spirits/gods” but the sole true sovereign). Lord = “Chúa” (baseline reuse, Critical risk, reinforced here). |
| Who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light | ὁ μόνος ἔχων ἀθανασίαν, φῶς οἰκῶν ἀπρόσιτον (6:16) | “The only one having immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light” | God’s inherent, uncreated, self-existent immortality and holiness | ”who only hath immortality…light which no man can approach unto” (KJV), “who alone has immortality…in unapproachable light” (ESV/NIV) | Foundational statement of God’s uniquely divine nature | ἀθανασία = “sự bất tử” (new term, Risk: High — see Glossary; must be distinguished from Taoist/folk “trường sinh bất tử,” immortality achieved through cultivation, alchemy, or the legendary Eight Immortals (Bát Tiên); God’s immortality is not attained but is his eternal, uncreated nature). |
| Rich toward good works, ready to share | πλουτεῖν ἐν ἔργοις καλοῖς, εὐμεταδότους (ploutein en ergois kalois, eumetadotous, 6:18) | “To be rich in good works, generous/ready-to-share” | Instruction to the materially wealthy on proper use of riches | ”rich in good works, ready to distribute” (KJV), “rich in good works, generous and ready to share” (ESV/NIV) | Practical outworking of Godliness and Contentment for the wealthy | ”giàu về việc lành, sẵn lòng chia sẻ”. Risk: Low. |
| Guard the deposit entrusted to you | τὴν παραθήκην φύλαξον (tēn parathēkēn phylaxon, 6:20) | “Guard the thing entrusted/deposited” | A banking/trust metaphor: doctrine received is to be preserved intact and passed on, not altered | ”keep that which is committed to thy trust” (KJV), “guard the deposit entrusted to you” (ESV/NIV) | THE central verse for the Guarding the Deposit of Faith doctrine | παραθήκη = “điều đã giao thác” (new term, Risk: Medium — see Glossary; must convey a sacred trust to be preserved unaltered and transmitted faithfully, not a private possession to be freely modified nor a one-time financial transaction concluded and forgotten). |
| Avoiding irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge | τὰς βεβήλους κενοφωνίας καὶ ἀντιθέσεις τῆς ψευδωνύμου γνώσεως (tas bebēlous kenophōnias kai antitheseis tēs pseudōnymou gnōseōs, 6:20) | “The profane empty-sounding [talk] and oppositions of the falsely-named knowledge” | Likely a direct reference to early proto-Gnostic speculative “knowledge” (gnōsis) claims | ”avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called” (KJV), “avoid…the contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge” (ESV/NIV) | Concludes the letter’s Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching and Guarding the Deposit doctrines together | ψευδώνυμος γνῶσις = “tri thức mạo xưng” / “sự hiểu biết giả danh” (new term, Risk: High — see Glossary; must be distinguished from Buddhist “trí tuệ” (wisdom/enlightened insight attained through meditation) and from legitimate secular “tri thức” (knowledge/learning); this targets specifically counterfeit doctrinal speculation opposing revealed apostolic truth, not knowledge or learning as such). |
| Grace be with you | ἡ χάρις μεθ’ ὑμῶν (hē charis meth’ hymōn, 6:21) | “Grace [be] with you [plural]“ | Standard Pauline epistolary benediction | ”grace be with thee” (KJV, singular textual variant), “Grace be with you [plural]” (ESV/NIV) | Closing benediction, framing the whole letter within grace | ”ân điển” (baseline reuse, Risk: High). Risk: High (baseline reuse). |
