Linguistic Gap Analysis
06 Linguistic Gap Analysis — 2 Corinthians
Purpose
This analysis identifies where Vietnamese vocabulary is missing (no ready term exists and one must be built), where Vietnamese vocabulary is crowded (a term exists but is already claimed by Buddhist, Confucian, or folk-religious meaning and must be fenced with teaching notes), and where a transliteration vs. paraphrase decision must be made. It closes with a ranked list of this letter’s highest-risk ambiguities. It governs the term choices later fixed in 08_core_glossary.md and the term-level registries, and must not contradict the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json, which remains the language authority for every term it already fixes.
Method: every chapter of 2 Corinthians (1–13) was swept for load-bearing vocabulary tied to the eight curriculum doctrines — Reconciliation with God, New Creation in Christ, Suffering and Comfort in Ministry, The New Covenant versus the Old, Sincerity and Apostolic Authority, Generosity and Grace in Giving, Power in Weakness, Genuine versus False Apostleship — with 5:11–21 treated as the theological anchor, not the scope boundary.

2. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix
| Doctrine | Available Vietnamese Term(s) | Weaknesses / Gaps | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reconciliation with God | hòa giải (noun); hòa thuận lại với (imperative) | “Hòa giải” is the standard legal/civil term for a negotiated settlement between two equal parties (hòa giải tranh chấp, hòa giải ly hôn) — implies mutual concession, not a unilateral divine act toward a guilty, non-negotiating party. | Retain “sự hòa giải” as the closest available noun (no better native alternative exists) but fence every occurrence with a mandatory teaching note: God is sole initiator; humanity is recipient, not co-negotiator; basis is Christ’s finished death, not compromise. Use the distinct imperative phrase “hòa thuận lại với Đức Chúa Trời” (5:20) to keep the passive, receiving sense separate from the noun’s negotiated-settlement connotation. |
| New Creation in Christ | tạo vật mới (compound: tạo = create + vật = created thing/being + mới = new) | No single native word for an instantaneous, gift-based re-creation of identity. The nearest cultural analogues (đầu thai, hóa kiếp, chuyển kiếp — all rebirth/transmigration vocabulary) actively describe the wrong doctrine: gradual attainment across cycles of existence. | Use the compound “tạo vật mới,” never a rebirth-family word. Fence with explicit teaching: instantaneous, once-for-all, grace-given new identity in union with Christ — not progressive self-transformation earned through practice or merit across lifetimes. |
| Suffering and Comfort in Ministry | sự hoạn nạn / sự chịu khổ (affliction); sự an ủi (comfort) | “Khổ” is the core Buddhist term for dukkha (suffering as an impersonal, universal condition escaped through detachment/liberation). “An ủi” alone can read as generic consolation without a personal divine source. | Retain both terms (no better native alternatives exist) but fence every occurrence: affliction has personal meaning under a sovereign, comforting, personal God producing hope and ministry to others — not an impersonal condition escaped through detachment. Comfort must be traced explicitly to “the Father of mercies” (1:3), not left as free-floating consolation. |
| The New Covenant versus the Old | giao ước mới (built on locked baseline “giao ước”); văn tự / Thánh Linh (letter/Spirit) | “Giao ước mới” risks being read as a human religious upgrade of an existing ethical tradition — a pattern familiar from Confucian classical-tradition renewal — rather than God’s own gracious inaugurating act. “Văn tự” (written text) and “Thánh Linh” risk flattening into an abstract “letter vs. spirit-of-the-law” principle rather than the personal Holy Spirit. | Reuse locked “giao ước” exactly; fence “mới” with teaching that this is God’s sovereign inaugurating act through Christ, not human ethical progress. Always retain the full “Đức Thánh Linh” or contextually clear “Thánh Linh” (never a bare abstract “tinh thần”) to preserve the personal referent of πνεῦμα in 3:6. |
| Sincerity and Apostolic Authority | sự chân thành / sự trong sạch (sincerity); hãy tự xét mình (examine yourselves); buôn bán lời của Đức Chúa Trời để trục lợi (peddling) | “Sự chân thành” can read as mere social politeness/tact rather than transparency of motive before God. “Tự xét mình” risks collapsing into a karmic self-accounting (mental tally of merit/demerit) given popular nhân quả reasoning. | Fence “tự xét mình” (13:5) explicitly as a faith-union test (“am I genuinely in Christ?”), not a merit audit. Frame sincerity vocabulary consistently as motive-transparency before God, distinguishing it from social/relational politeness norms. |
| Generosity and Grace in Giving | ân điển (extended sense); gieo / gặt (sowing/reaping); người dâng cho cách vui lòng (cheerful giver) | The most heavily crowded doctrine in the letter. “Gieo nhân nào, gặt quả nào” is a live Vietnamese proverb popularly understood through Buddhist nhân quả (impersonal karmic cause-and-effect). “Làm phước” / “cúng dường” (merit-generating almsgiving, including giving on behalf of a deceased relative) is a deeply entrenched cultural practice that closely resembles the form of Christian giving while contradicting its theology. | Reuse locked “ân điển” for the giving material (chs. 8–9); use “gieo / gặt” but fence every occurrence (9:6) as God’s own personal, sovereign, gracious multiplying of blessing — never an automatic impersonal mechanism. Explicitly and repeatedly distinguish cheerful, grace-motivated giving from merit-generating almsgiving: giving here accrues no standing before God. |
The paradox (strength perfected through weakness, not despite it) has no native proverbial equivalent and risks being flattened into a self-help “try harder despite hardship” message, which would collapse into Confucian self-cultivation (tu thân) or Buddhist self-effort toward enlightenment. “Cái giằm” (thorn) risks being read through the popular quả báo/nhân quả lens as retribution for sin. | Render 12:9 as a fixed, non-abbreviated dual clause (grace-sufficiency + power-perfected-in-weakness) — never split or paraphrased loosely — and fence with a note that sufficiency is located in grace received, not effort exerted. Fence the thorn (12:7) explicitly as God-permitted sanctifying affliction, not retributive punishment. |
| Genuine versus False Apostleship | sứ đồ (locked) + giả (false) / hơn hết (super-, ironic); thiên sứ sáng láng (giả) / sứ giả của Sa-tan; thần của thế gian này | Vietnamese folk religion’s pantheon model (every locale, ancestor, or element may have its own legitimate “thần”) makes “thần của thế gian này” for Satan risky without explicit clarification. “Thiên sứ sáng láng” collides with the trusted folk category of benevolent ancestor/spirit visitations in dreams (báo mộng). | Fence “thần của thế gian này” (4:4) every occurrence as a title for a defeated, false usurper, never a legitimate object of reverence. Fence “thiên sứ sáng láng (giả)” and “sứ giả của Sa-tan” (11:14; 12:7) every occurrence as deceptive counterfeit, explicitly contrasted with trustworthy ancestor-visitation categories the reader may otherwise assume. |
3. Missing Vocabulary vs. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods
3.1 Missing Vocabulary (true gaps — no ready Vietnamese term; compound/descriptive coinage required)
| Concept | Why the gap exists | Coinage strategy adopted |
|---|---|---|
| New Creation (καινὴ κτίσις) | No single word for instantaneous, gift-based re-creation of personal identity distinct from gradual attainment | Compound “tạo vật mới” (create + new-being) |
| Christ made sin (5:21) | No single verb captures the judicial “great exchange”; Vietnamese has no term for imputed guilt-transfer distinct from moral corruption | Full descriptive clause: “Đức Chúa Trời đã làm cho Ngài chịu tội lỗi vì chúng ta” |
| Not counting trespasses (5:19) | No single verb for forensic non-crediting of specific offenses | Compound sharing the baseline’s accounting-verb root “kể”: “không kể tội lỗi (sự vi phạm) của họ cho họ” |
| Judgment seat of Christ (bēma) | No native image for a raised evaluative platform distinct from a criminal court or a karmic ledger | Paraphrase “tòa án của Đấng Christ” plus mandatory contrast note (reward evaluation of the already-saved, not condemnation) |
| Ambassador in a purely spiritual sense (5:20) | “Đại sứ” exists only as a diplomatic/political office | Qualified phrase “đại sứ (thay mặt cho Đấng Christ)“ |
| Triumphal procession / fragrance of Christ (2:14–16) | Roman military-parade custom and OT sacrificial-aroma imagery have no Vietnamese cultural referent | Literal paraphrase with mandatory explanatory gloss at first occurrence |
| Super-apostles, ironic register (11:5; 12:11) | Vietnamese has no ready ironic-superlative apostolic title | Descriptive paraphrase “những kẻ tự xưng là sứ đồ hơn hết” preserving the self-claiming, ironic sense |
3.2 Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods (terms exist but are already claimed by a rival framework; require fencing, not replacement)
| Term | Competing Vietnamese-culture claimant | Fencing requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Reconciliation (hòa giải) | Legal/civil mediated settlement between equal parties | Note: God is sole initiator; not a negotiated compromise |
| Transformed (biến đổi, must avoid biến hóa) | Folkloric/legendary shape-shifting by deities and spirits (Tây Du Ký-style biến hóa) | Never use biến hóa; frame as gradual Spirit-wrought moral likeness, not magical form-change |
| Comfort / Affliction (an ủi / khổ) | Buddhist dukkha and detachment-based consolation | Frame suffering as meaningful under a sovereign personal God, not an impersonal reality escaped via detachment |
| Sowing and Reaping (gieo / gặt) | Popular nhân quả (karma) proverb “gieo nhân nào gặt quả nào” | Frame as God’s personal, gracious multiplying, not automatic impersonal cause-effect |
| Generosity/Grace-Giving (ân điển extended) | Buddhist làm phước / cúng dường (merit-generating almsgiving, including for deceased relatives) | Frame giving as gratitude-response to grace already received, accruing zero merit |
| Fear of the Lord (kính sợ Chúa) | Folk appeasement-fear of displeased ancestors/spirits (cúng giải hạn) | Frame as reverential awe tied to future accountability before a personal God, not ritual appeasement |
| God of this age / Angel of light (thần / thiên sứ) | Legitimate folk pantheon deities; trusted ancestor-spirit dream-visitations (báo mộng) | Frame explicitly as defeated, deceptive counterfeit power, never a legitimate or trustworthy spirit |
| Temple of the Living God (đền thờ) | Folk shrine buildings (đền, miếu) housing spirits/deified heroes receiving incense offerings | Frame believers themselves, Spirit-indwelt, as meant — not a physical shrine needing ritual offerings |
| Examine Yourselves (tự xét mình) | Karmic self-accounting / mental merit-demerit tally | Frame as a faith-union test, not a merit audit |
| Boasting (khoe mình) | Confucian modesty norm treating any self-boasting as shameful | Frame Paul’s paradoxical “boasting in the Lord / in weakness” as distinct from condemned self-glorification, or the rhetorical argument of chs. 10–12 collapses |
| Godly Sorrow (buồn rầu theo ý Đức Chúa Trời) | Ritual guilt-appeasement of ancestors/spirits (xin lỗi tổ tiên, cúng giải hạn) | Frame as relational, God-ward sorrow producing saving repentance, not ritual restitution |
| Judgment Seat of Christ (tòa án của Đấng Christ) | Popular nghiệp báo / quả báo (karmic retribution) | Frame as reward-evaluation of the already-secure believer, not a karmic ledger of condemnation |
| Inner/Outer Man (con người bên trong/ngoài) | Buddhist “true self”/Buddha-nature discourse; Taoist-influenced inner-cultivation (nội công) | Frame as Spirit-wrought renewal grounded in union with Christ, not self-realized enlightenment |
| Paradise / Third Heaven (Ba-ra-đi / tầng trời thứ ba) | Tiered, merit-attained Buddhist cosmology (multiple cõi trời reached through accumulated practice) | Frame as a singular, unearned, sovereignly granted revelatory experience, not a cosmological tier reached by spiritual achievement |
4. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions
| Term | Decision | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Paradise / Third Heaven | Hybrid: transliterate “Ba-ra-đi” + literal paraphrase “tầng trời thứ ba” | Transliteration alone would be opaque to first-generation readers without the descriptive gloss; pure paraphrase alone would lose the proper-noun weight of the term Paul himself uses |
| False Apostles / Super-Apostles | Paraphrase (compound with locked “sứ đồ”) | No transliteration exists in Vietnamese Bible tradition for these Pauline coinages; compounding with the already-fixed “sứ đồ” preserves lexical continuity with baseline apostleship vocabulary |
| New Creation | Paraphrase/compound (“tạo vật mới”) | Transliterating a Greek phrase here would produce an unreadable neologism with zero traditional-usage support; a compound using existing, doctrinally safe morphemes is preferred per the baseline’s “avoid inventing new coinages” instruction |
| God of this age | Paraphrase (“thần của thế gian này”), NOT the locked “Đức Chúa Trời” | Applying the established God-term to Satan would be doctrinally catastrophic; a lower-case common noun with a restrictive qualifying phrase is required, always accompanied by a fencing note |
| Angel of Light / Messenger of Satan | Paraphrase, reusing the standard Vietnamese term for “angel” (thiên sứ) with explicit “giả”/Satan qualifiers | No transliteration tradition exists; “thiên sứ” alone is safe and standard, but must always carry the falsity/Satan qualifier in this context |
| Triumphal Procession / Fragrance of Christ | Paraphrase with mandatory explanatory gloss at first occurrence | No Vietnamese loanword for the Roman military triumph exists; brief explanatory framing carries lower risk than either a borrowed foreign term or a domesticating substitute image |
| Holy Kiss | Literal paraphrase retained (“cái hôn thánh”), not culturally substituted | Registry precedent: retain the literal phrase per the Bản Dịch Truyền Thống convention of translating cultural greeting customs literally, while permitting teaching notes on modern equivalent practice |
| Messiah / Christ / proper names | Transliteration (reuse baseline forms exactly: Đấng Christ, Phao-lô, etc.) | Already fixed in the baseline; 2 Corinthians introduces no new proper names requiring a fresh decision |
| Thorn in the Flesh | Literal paraphrase (“cái giằm xóc trong thịt”) | The image translates naturally and vividly into Vietnamese with no cultural substitution needed; only the interpretation (not the image) requires fencing against karmic-retribution reading |
5. Ranked List of Highest-Risk Ambiguities in 2 Corinthians
Ranked by combined severity (doctrinal centrality × syncretism collision risk × frequency/visibility). Items 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, and 13 all fall within the core passage (5:11–21), confirming that 2 Corinthians 5:11–21 is unusually dense with stacked Critical-risk ambiguities — a structural feature the review-routing workflow (Phase 2 Step 17) should weight accordingly.
| Rank | Ambiguity | Passage | Why highest-risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ”Christ made sin” — the great exchange | 5:21 | Critical; a single mistranslation can imply moral corruption in Christ or reduce substitution to sympathetic identification, destroying the doctrine of Reconciliation at its climax |
| 2 | Reconciliation (καταλλαγή) | 5:18–20 | Critical; “hòa giải” defaults to mutual, negotiated settlement, directly inverting the unilateral, gracious divine initiative the doctrine requires |
| 3 | New Creation | 5:17 | Critical; adjacent vocabulary space (đầu thai, hóa kiếp) names the opposite doctrine (cyclical rebirth by attainment) rather than instantaneous grace-gift |
| 4 | God of this age | 4:4 | Critical; Vietnamese folk cosmology’s legitimate-pantheon model makes it easy to unconsciously grant Satan real deity-status via the word “thần” |
| 5 | Angel of Light / Messenger of Satan | 11:14; 12:7 | Critical; collides with the trusted, benevolent folk category of ancestor/spirit dream-visitation (báo mộng) |
| 6 | Grace Is Sufficient / Power Perfected in Weakness | 12:9 | Critical; doctrinal center of “Power in Weakness”; easily collapsed into Confucian self-cultivation or Buddhist self-effort if softened |
| 7 | Resurrection as ground for New Creation | 4:14; 5:15 | Critical carryover from baseline; any drift toward đầu thai/luân hồi corrupts both resurrection and new-creation doctrines simultaneously |
| 8 | Not Counting Trespasses | 5:19 | Critical; must retain lexical/doctrinal symmetry with imputed righteousness (shared “kể” root) or the forensic double-sided grace of the core passage is broken |
| 9 | Substitutionary death — “one died for all… all died” | 5:14–15 | Critical; risks either universalist misreading (automatic salvation for all) or karmic misreading (extinguishing of self), rather than representative, faith-appropriated death in Christ |
| 10 | Lordship of Christ (pervasive) | throughout, esp. 4:5 | Critical baseline carryover; the letter’s dense apostolic-authority argument depends on Christ’s exclusive Lordship remaining unambiguous in every occurrence |
| 11 | Boasting — legitimate vs. illegitimate | 5:12; 10–12 | High; Confucian modesty norms treat all self-reference as shameful, which can flatten Paul’s entire paradoxical rhetorical strategy in chs. 10–12 |
| 12 | Sowing and Reaping | 9:6 | High; the identical proverb form is already popularly filled with Buddhist karmic content, making silent reinterpretation by the reader likely without an explicit fence |
| 13 | Fear of the Lord | 5:11 | High; sits inside the core passage itself, immediately preceding the reconciliation argument, and risks collapsing apostolic motive into ancestor/spirit appeasement-fear |
| 14 | Ministry (diakonia) | throughout | High; “chức vụ” carries Confucian office-rank connotations that can invert the servant-nature Paul insists on, especially in chs. 3–6 and 8–9 |
| 15 | Temple of the Living God | 6:16 | High; “đền thờ” remains conceptually adjacent to folk shrine buildings (đền, miếu) that house spirits receiving ritual offerings |
6. Handoff Notes
- This analysis confirms no additional Critical/High terms beyond those already captured in
08_core_glossary.mdandassets/bible_term_registry.json; all fencing requirements identified here are already reflected astranslation_notesin those artifacts. - Ranks 1–10 (all Critical) must route to human theologian review on every occurrence per baseline routing convention; ranks 11–15 (High) likewise require human theologian review per the baseline’s High-risk routing rule.
- The unusual density of Critical ambiguities within 5:11–21 should be flagged to the Phase 2 batch-processing workflow as a passage requiring sequential (not parallel) worker processing, since several of its terms (reconciliation, not-counting-trespasses, christ-made-sin, substitutionary death) are mutually load-bearing within the same six verses.
- No further missing-vocabulary gaps were identified beyond §3.1; all crowded neighborhoods in §3.2 have an assigned fencing strategy carried forward into the term registry.
This document feeds Phase 1 Step 8 outputs (07_semantic_analysis.md, 08_core_glossary.md) and the translation-memory update in Phase 1 Step 2. It does not alter any baseline Romans term; it only extends coverage to 2 Corinthians-specific vocabulary.
