| Knowledge | γνῶσις / gnōsis | knowledge, understanding | general cognitive knowledge or understanding (contrast ἐπίγνωσις above, the deeper relational knowing) | “knowledge” | Part of the virtue list (1:5) — a distinct, more general term for growing understanding, distinguished in Vietnamese from ἐπίγνωσις to preserve the nuance | sự hiểu biết | Medium |

| Flood / Noah | κατακλυσμός / Νῶε / kataklysmos / Nōe | flood / Noah | the historical Genesis Flood and its sole preacher of righteousness | ”flood,” “Noah” | [Builds on REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: sự công bình] Noah as “a preacher of righteousness” — OT background needed for Vietnamese readers with low OT narrative literacy | cơn nước lụt; Nô-ê, người truyền giảng sự công bình | Low |

| Patience / longsuffering | μακροθυμία / makrothymia | slowness to anger, forbearance, patience | patient restraint that delays deserved judgment for a purpose | ”patience,” “longsuffering,” “forbearance” | Doctrinal anchor for “Patience of God’s Timing.” God’s seeming delay is in fact purposeful patience “not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (3:9) — a personal, purposeful forbearance, not an indifferent or impersonal cosmic slowness | sự nhẫn nại | High |
| One day as a thousand years | μία ἡμέρα ὡς χίλια ἔτη / mia hēmera hōs chilia etē | one day like a thousand years | a proverbial statement (echoing Psalm 90:4) about God’s transcendence over human time-perception | ”a day is like a thousand years” | Defends the certainty of the promise against the appearance of delay by relativizing human time-perception to God’s, without collapsing history into an endless repeating cycle | một ngày như ngàn năm | Medium |
| Day of the Lord | ἡμέρα Κυρίου / hēmera Kyriou | day of the Lord | the fixed future day of God’s decisive intervention in judgment and consummation | ”Day of the Lord” | Doctrinal anchor for “The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment.” A specific, linear, one-time, unrepeatable future day. Must not be assimilated to the Buddhist cosmological cycle of world-ages (thành – trụ – hoại – không: formation, continuation, destruction, emptiness), which teaches repeated cosmic destructions and re-formations without a final, personal Judge or a final new creation | ngày của Chúa | Critical |
| Elements / heavens dissolved by fire | στοιχεῖα…λυθήσεται / stoicheia…lythēsetai | elements…will be dissolved | the basic components of the cosmos, destroyed by fire | ”elements,” “will melt/dissolve” | Describes the violent, final dissolution of the present cosmic order at the Day of the Lord | các nguyên tố… sẽ bị tiêu hủy | Medium |
| New heavens and new earth | καινοὺς οὐρανοὺς καὶ γῆν καινήν / kainous ouranous kai gēn kainēn | new heavens and new earth | the final, renewed created order following the judgment of the present one | ”new heavens and a new earth” | Established Vietnamese Bible phrase, echoing Isaiah and Revelation. Must be taught as a final, linear, one-time renewal following judgment of the present order — not a recurring kalpa-cycle of cosmic destruction and re-formation as in Buddhist cosmology, and not one stage in an endless cycle but the permanent dwelling place of righteousness | trời mới đất mới | Critical |
| Spotless and blameless | ἄσπιλοι καὶ ἀμώμητοι / aspiloi kai amōmētoi | without spot, without blame | moral purity and freedom from reproach | ”spotless and blameless” | The ethical goal toward which believers strive in light of the coming Day, achieved through Christ, not self-purification through ritual or meritorious accumulation | không dấu vết, không chỗ trách được | Medium |
| Scripture | γραφή / graphē | (see 1:20 above) | “the Scriptures,” “writings” | Explicitly includes Paul’s letters (3:16) alongside the OT as authoritative, inspired writing that can be “twisted” | Kinh Thánh | High | |
| Twist / distort (Scripture) | στρεβλοῦσιν / strebloun | to twist, to torture, to wrench | literally, to torture on a rack; figuratively, to distort meaning through forced misreading | ”twist,” “distort,” “wrest” | Warns that Paul’s writings (and Scripture generally) can be willfully misused by “the untaught and unstable” to their own destruction — Scripture’s inspiration does not prevent its abuse by bad-faith readers | xuyên tạc | Medium |
| Untaught and unstable | ἀμαθεῖς καὶ ἀστήρικτοι / amatheis kai astēriktoi | uninstructed and unstable | lacking sound teaching and firm grounding | ”untaught,” “unstable,” “ignorant” | Those vulnerable to distorting Scripture and falling into error | không được dạy dỗ và không vững vàng | Low |
| Error | πλάνη / planē | wandering, error, deception | a straying from truth, often with a deceiving agent implied | ”error,” “delusion” | The destination toward which the lawless lead the unstable, contrasted with steadfastness in truth | sự sai lạc | Medium |
| Grow in grace and knowledge | αὐξάνετε ἐν χάριτι καὶ γνώσει / auxanete en chariti kai gnōsei | grow in grace and knowledge | ongoing, cumulative growth | ”grow in grace and knowledge” | [REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: ân điển] The letter’s closing exhortation returns to ch. 1’s themes of grace and knowledge, framing the whole epistle around growth rather than static status | tăng trưởng trong ân điển và sự hiểu biết | Medium |
Summary of Whole-Book Coverage

- Chapter 2: introduces false-teacher vocabulary, judgment vocabulary, and the three OT judgment/rescue examples (angels, Flood/Noah, Sodom and Gomorrah, Balaam) — no chapter is without new load-bearing terms.
- Chapter 3: introduces the Parousia-doubt of the scoffers, the Day of the Lord, God’s patience, and the new-heavens-new-earth hope, closing with a return to the grace/knowledge language of chapter 1.
No chapter in 2 Peter is without new theological vocabulary; all three chapters are covered above in full.
