Semantic Analysis

07 Semantic Analysis — Jude (Koine Greek → Vietnamese)

0. Book Overview

Jude is a single-chapter, twenty-five-verse letter (Ἰούδα ἐπιστολή). Because the book has only one chapter, the PRD’s “every chapter first to last” mandate and the “core passage” mandate converge: the whole book minus the salutation (vv.1–2) and closing doxology (vv.24–25) is the core passage (vv.3–23). To satisfy full-book coverage explicitly and without silent omission, this document:

  1. Treats Jude 1:3–23 verse-by-verse (Section 1) — the theological anchor and the assigned core passage.
  2. Treats Chapter 1 in full (Section 2) — explicitly re-confirming vv.3–23 as “covered above,” and giving the same verse-by-verse term treatment to the salutation (vv.1–2) and doxology (vv.24–25), which lie outside the core passage but are still part of the one chapter that constitutes the entire book.

No other chapters exist in Jude, so no chapter can be marked “no new vocabulary” — every verse of the book receives direct treatment in this document.

Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are reused exactly: πίστις → đức tin, χάρις → ân điển, κύριος → Chúa, Ἰησοῦς Χριστός → Đức Chúa Giê-xu / Đấng Christ, θεός → Đức Chúa Trời, πνεῦμα ἅγιον → Đức Thánh Linh, ἅγιος/ἅγιοι → thánh / các thánh đồ, κλητός → được kêu gọi, ἀπόστολος → sứ đồ, σωτηρία → sự cứu rỗi, εἰρήνη → sự bình an, σώζω-root → cứu, προφητεύω/προφητεία-root → nói tiên tri / lời tiên tri, Μωϋσῆς → Môi-se. These are marked “(reuse)” below and are not re-argued.

SECTION 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: Jude 1:3–23

Jude 1:3

“Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”

the faith [deposit sense]πίστιςpististrust; that which is trusted/believed(1) personal trust in Christ; (2) the objective body of apostolic doctrine (“the faith”) — the sense active here”the faith,” “the faith once delivered”Distinct sense from “faith” as personal trust elsewhere in NT usage; here πίστις is the content defended, the deposit of revealed truthđức tin (reuse of baseline term, with contextual note — see Doctrine Note below)High
the saintsἁγίοιςhagioisholy onescorporate designation of all believers, recipients of the deposit”saints,” “God’s people”The whole church, not an elite class, is entrusted with guarding this depositcác thánh đồ (reuse)High

Doctrine Note — Contending for the Faith Once Delivered: Vietnamese possesses a generic word for “a religion/way,” đạo (used across Buddhism, Confucianism, Caodaism, and folk religion, as in Đạo Phật, Đạo Tin Lành, Đạo Ông Bà). If πίστις in its “deposit of doctrine” sense were rendered with bare đạo, the text would read as “the way/religion” in the generic multi-religious Vietnamese sense — one path among many — rather than the specific, closed, apostolic deposit of revealed truth. Per the reuse rule, đức tin is retained (matching baseline “faith”), but every occurrence of this “deposit” sense (vv.3, 20) requires a translator/teaching note distinguishing it from personal trust-usage and from generic “đạo.” This elevates the risk above baseline’s Medium rating for ordinary “faith.”

Jude 1:4

denyἀρνούμενοιarnoumenoito refuse to acknowledgedisown, repudiate”deny,” “disown”Denial is practical (lifestyle) more than verbal creed-denial — living as though Christ has no claim on themchối bỏMedium

Doctrine Note — Deity/Lordship of Christ: The grammar of v.4 (single article over δεσπότην καὶ κύριον, both in apposition to Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν) must not be translated in a way that separates “Master” (Father) from “Lord” (Christ). Both titles belong to Jesus Christ, reinforcing the baseline’s Critical-risk “Lordship of Christ” and “Deity of Christ” doctrines. Đấng Chủ Tể must clearly co-refer to Đức Chúa Giê-xu, not read as a separate divine title for the Father.

Doctrine Note — Inspiration of Scripture / Fulfillment of Prophecy: Jude’s citation of a saying paralleled in 1 Enoch (a text outside the Hebrew and Christian canon) requires explicit teaching: Jude affirms this specific statement as a true prophetic word under divine inspiration when he cites it in Scripture; he does not thereby certify 1 Enoch as a whole as canonical Scripture. In the Vietnamese context, this must be distinguished from popular acceptance of old almanacs, prophetic-sounding folk texts, or the sayings of a thầy bói (fortune-teller) as equally authoritative — Jude’s authority for this saying rests on its inspired inclusion in an apostolic letter, not on the antiquity or reputation of its original source document.

Doctrine Note — Kept by God and Presented Blameless: Verses 1, 6, 13, 21, and 24 all use τηρέω/φυλάσσω. The Vietnamese rendering must let readers track the shifts: (a) angels failed to keep their position (v.6, negative); (b) they are now judicially kept in chains (v.6, negative custodial); (c) believers are kept by Jesus Christ (v.1, gracious, secure); (d) believers must keep themselves in God’s love (v.21, responsible cooperation); (e) God alone is able to keep believers from stumbling (v.24, ultimate ground of assurance). This is the theological spine of the letter’s final movement and requires a single consistent Vietnamese root (giữ) across all five occurrences, with translator notes distinguishing which sense is active at each point.

SECTION 2 — Full-Book Chapter Coverage: Jude, Chapter 1 (the entire book)

Jude consists of a single chapter. This section confirms full-book coverage by explicitly accounting for every verse:

  • Jude 1:3–23 — the assigned core passage — fully treated verse-by-verse in Section 1 above. (No further repetition here; cross-referenced as covered.)
  • Jude 1:1–2 (Salutation) and Jude 1:24–25 (Doxology) — outside the core passage, treated below with the same term-level fields, so that the whole one-chapter book receives direct coverage with no silent omission.
