Doctrine Analysis

11 Doctrine Analysis — Jude (English → Vietnamese)

Overview

Jude is a single-chapter letter (25 verses). Per the PRD’s full-book coverage mandate, this analysis treats the entire chapter as the scope, organized into seven sections that follow the letter’s natural argument. The core passage (Jude 1:3-23) is the theological anchor and receives the deepest treatment, but the opening greeting (1:1-2) and closing doxology (1:24-25) are explicitly analyzed rather than silently omitted, since they carry Critical- and High-risk doctrinal freight of their own (the “kept” theme in 1:1 and the “our Savior” title in 1:25).

This matrix is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: the same 13 doctrines, the same risk tiers, and the same review routing. This document adds per-section passage mapping and translation-risk detail; it introduces no new doctrines and no tier changes.

Section 1: Greeting (Jude 1:1-2)

DoctrineSupporting PassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Kept by God and Presented Blameless1:1 (“kept for Jesus Christ”)HighOpening use of τηρέω (giữ) establishes the security theme before any warning is issued — sequencing matters. If the translation buries or weakens “được giữ” here, the reader loses the frame that makes the letter’s warnings land as warnings to the kept, not threats to the unkept.Human theologian
Divine Calling (contextual — “called,” κλητοῖς)1:1(Carried under Kept by God; not a separate registry entry)“Được kêu gọi” must read as the same effectual, sovereign calling established in the Romans baseline (1:6-7; 8:28-30), not a generic invitation.Human theologian
Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering (greeting form)1:2 (“mercy, peace, and love be multiplied”)Highἔλεος opens the letter as a blessing before it becomes an exhortation (1:22-23); translators must keep “sự thương xót” consistent across both occurrences so the reader recognizes the callback.Human theologian

Chapter coverage note: This section is fully reviewed; no additional doctrines beyond those already tracked in the registry are introduced here.

Section 2: Occasion and Purpose (Jude 1:3-4)

DoctrineSupporting PassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Contending for the Faith Once Delivered1:3Highἐπαγωνίζεσθαι must avoid the politically loaded Vietnamese “đấu tranh” (class-struggle rhetoric); πίστις in its deposit sense must never default to generic “đạo.”Human theologian
Deity and Exclusive Lordship of Christ1:4 (“our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ”)CriticalThe single Greek article governs both δεσπότην and κύριον, both applied to Jesus Christ; Vietnamese must not split these into separate referents (Father vs. Son) or reduce “Chúa” to generic respectful address.Human theologian
Grace Perverted into License1:4CriticalThis is the letter’s sharpest inversion of ân điển; must explicitly preserve the baseline’s grace-versus-merit/debt distinction while adding that grace never cancels moral accountability.Human theologian
Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers (introduced)1:4 (“designated for this condemnation”)Highκρίμα (sự kết án) is a judicial sentence appointed in advance by a personal God, not an impersonal karmic maturation.Human theologian

Section 3: Old Testament Warning Types — Israel, Angels, Sodom (Jude 1:5-7)

DoctrineSupporting PassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel, Angels, Sodom)1:5 (Israel/Exodus generation), 1:6 (angels), 1:7 (Sodom and Gomorrah)Critical”Eternal fire” and “eternal chains” must be taught as final, linear, unrepeatable judgment, never as purifying suffering preceding rebirth (as in the cycle of samsara). “Thiên sứ” must stay distinct from folk tutelary/ancestor spirits (thần linh).Human theologian
Angelology and Spiritual Warfare (introduced)1:6 (“angels who did not stay within their own position”)Highἄγγελος concerns created spirit-beings under God’s authority, not local deities or departed-ancestor spirits placated at the family altar.Human theologian
Kept by God and Presented Blameless (contrast sense)1:6 (“did not keep their own position… kept in eternal chains”)HighTwo senses of τηρέω collide in one verse: the angels’ failure to keep, and God’s judicial keeping (custody) of them. Vietnamese must render both with the “giữ” root but disambiguate the subject/agency in context notes.Human theologian

Section 4: False Teachers Described (Jude 1:8-13)

DoctrineSupporting PassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers1:8-10, 1:12-13High”Không tin kính” must remain a relational-moral category (irreverence toward a personal God), never softened to impoliteness or bad luck. “Đá ngầm” vs. “dấu ô uế” (1:12) is a textual-tradition-dependent choice affecting meaning (danger vs. moral stain); document the choice made.Human theologian
Angelology and Spiritual Warfare1:8-9 (“the glorious ones,” “the devil,” “archangel Michael”)High”Ma quỷ” (the devil) is the one personal cosmic adversary and must not be conflated with “ma” (wandering/hungry ghosts) placated in folk and ancestor-veneration ritual. Michael’s restraint models godly authority, contrasted with the false teachers’ recklessness.Human theologian
Deity and Exclusive Lordship of Christ (implicit, via Michael’s deference to “the Lord”)1:9CriticalEven an archangel defers to “Chúa” rather than pronouncing judgment himself — reinforcing exclusive divine authority; must not be flattened into a mere courtesy exchange between spirit-beings.Human theologian
Mutual Edification in the Church (love feasts corrupted)1:12Low”Tiệc yêu thương” (love feasts) as a positive practice now defiled by false teachers; standard low-risk fellowship vocabulary.Automated review

Section 5: Enoch’s Prophecy and Coming Judgment (Jude 1:14-16)

DoctrineSupporting PassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Inspiration and Authority of Scripture (the Enoch citation)1:14-15HighJude’s citation affirms this specific inspired statement, not the canonicity of the whole non-canonical source document (1 Enoch). Must be distinguished from popular Vietnamese deference to almanacs or a fortune-teller’s (thầy bói) sayings as comparably authoritative.Human theologian
Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers1:15 (ἀσεβής ×4), 1:16HighFourfold repetition of “ungodly” in a single verse is a rhetorical intensifier; Vietnamese should preserve the repetition’s force rather than collapsing synonyms for variety.Human theologian

Section 6: Apostolic Warning and the Church’s Response (Jude 1:17-23)

DoctrineSupporting PassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Apostolic Warning Concerning the Last Days1:17-18Medium”Thời kỳ sau cùng” (last time) must be a single linear final epoch of history, not a recurring stage in a cosmological cycle of ages/kalpas.Native speaker review
Regeneration and the Indwelling Spirit1:19-20Critical”Devoid of the Spirit” (không có Đức Thánh Linh) must state starkly and completely that false teachers lack the Spirit’s indwelling — not softened into a vague lack of “spirituality” that could describe any devout Buddhist or Confucian practitioner. “Có tánh xác thịt” must match the established 1 Corinthians 2:14 Vietnamese Bible usage.Human theologian
Contending for the Faith Once Delivered (“most holy faith,” praying in the Spirit)1:20HighSame deposit-of-doctrine sense as 1:3, now intensified (“rất thánh”); must retain closed-deposit force, not drift toward generic personal piety.Human theologian
Kept by God and Presented Blameless (human responsibility clause)1:21 (“keep yourselves in the love of God”)HighHuman responsibility (“giữ mình”) must be framed as exercised in dependence on God’s keeping power (culminating in 1:24), not as a self-sufficient effort that could imply salvation is maintained by merit.Human theologian
Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering1:21-23Highἔλεος must be modeled on the personal, rescuing compassion of a covenant God who actively saves — not on từ bi (Buddhist compassion cultivated through meditative insight) and not on the ritual pattern of cầu xin tổ tiên (petitioning the departed). The threefold graded response (have mercy / save / have mercy with fear) must retain its escalating structure.Human theologian

Section 7: Doxology (Jude 1:24-25)

DoctrineSupporting PassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Kept by God and Presented Blameless (climax)1:24 (“able to keep you from stumbling… present you blameless”)HighThis is the climactic ground of assurance: God’s power, not human effort, secures final perseverance. “Trình… không chỗ trách được” carries a sacrificial-purity image (unblemished offering) that must not be flattened into a merely moral “good behavior” sense.Human theologian
Doxology and God’s Preserving Power1:24-25High”The only God” must retain unqualified monotheistic exclusivity — not one savior-deity among many in Vietnam’s pluralistic religious marketplace. “Before all time… and forever” must be a single unbroken eternal timeline, not recurring cosmic ages/kalpas.Human theologian
Deity and Exclusive Lordship of Christ (Savior title tied to Jesus Christ)1:25 (“through Jesus Christ our Lord”)Critical”Cứu Chúa của chúng ta” must terminologically link back to “our common salvation” (1:3), reinforcing that the letter’s opening and closing frame the same saving work.Human theologian

Full-book coverage confirmation: all 25 verses of Jude 1 have been mapped to at least one doctrine above; no verse or section was silently omitted. Sections 1 (greeting) and 7 (doxology), which lie outside the core passage boundary (1:3-23) but inside the full book, are explicitly reviewed above and carry High/Critical doctrinal weight of their own (the “kept” theme’s bookends and the Savior/Lord title convergence).

See assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json for the canonical risk tier and routing values. See analysis/08_core_glossary.md for the full term-level rationale underlying each translation-risk note above.

Critical Risk Doctrines

Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel, Angels, Sodom)

Vietnamese name: Những Lời Cảnh Báo trong Cựu Ước như Hình Bóng (Y-sơ-ra-ên, Các Thiên Sứ, Sô-đôm)
Key terms: destroyed, angels, eternal chains, Sodom and Gomorrah, eternal fire
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: ‘eternal fire’ (lửa đời đời) and ‘eternal chains’ must be taught as final, linear, unrepeatable judgment under a personal God, never as a purifying or temporary suffering preceding rebirth or restoration as in Buddhist cosmology’s cycle of samsara. ‘Thiên sứ’ (angels) must be distinguished from the Vietnamese folk category of local or ancestor spirits (thần linh) invoked in ancestor-veneration practice.

Deity and Exclusive Lordship of Christ

Vietnamese name: Thần Tính và Quyền Làm Chúa Duy Nhất của Đấng Christ
Key terms: our only Master and Lord, Lord
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: the single Greek article governing both δεσπότην and κύριον, both applied to Jesus Christ in 1:4, must not be split so that ‘Master’ reads as a separate title for the Father distinct from the Son; ‘Chúa’ must retain exclusive, supreme lordship throughout, not the generic respectful-address level of ‘chúa/chủ’ used for any master or owner in secular Vietnamese speech.

Regeneration and the Indwelling Spirit

Vietnamese name: Sự Tái Sinh và Đức Thánh Linh Ngự Trong Lòng
Key terms: worldly, devoid of the Spirit, praying in the Holy Spirit
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: ‘devoid of the Spirit’ states starkly that the false teachers entirely lack the Holy Spirit’s indwelling; must not be softened to a vague lack of general ‘spirituality’ that could describe any devout Buddhist or Confucian practitioner. ‘Có tánh xác thịt’ (worldly/natural) must remain the specific anthropological category of the unregenerate, matching the established 1 Corinthians 2:14 Vietnamese Bible usage.

Grace Perverted into License

Vietnamese name: Ân Điển Bị Biến Thành Cái Cớ Cho Sự Luông Tuồng
Key terms: grace, sensuality, deny our only Master and Lord
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: this is the letter’s sharpest possible misuse of ân điển — false teachers twist the very grace that saves into a license for sin. The rendering must reinforce the baseline’s warning that ân điển is never phước đức/công đức (earned merit) nor ơn nghĩa (a reciprocal debt), and here must specifically make clear that grace never removes moral accountability before a personal God.

High Risk Doctrines

Contending for the Faith Once Delivered

Vietnamese name: Sự Tranh Chiến Vì Đức Tin Đã Được Truyền Cho Một Lần Đủ Cả
Key terms: contend for, once for all delivered, the faith, most holy faith
Review routing: Human theologian

The ‘deposit of doctrine’ sense of πίστις risks collapsing into the generic Vietnamese term đạo (the ‘Way’/religion, used indiscriminately of Buddhism, Confucianism, Caodaism, and folk religion). Must be taught as a closed, exclusive, non-repeatable apostolic deposit of revealed truth, not one path among many available religious ways.

Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers

Vietnamese name: Sự Phán Xét trên Những Kẻ Dạy Dối Không Tin Kính
Key terms: ungodly, condemnation, judgment, woe, blaspheme, worldly
Review routing: Human theologian

Judicial, personal condemnation by God must not be flattened into impersonal karmic consequence (nghiệp) or fate; ‘không tin kính’ must remain a relational-moral category — fundamental lack of reverence toward a personal God — not mere impoliteness or bad luck.

Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering

Vietnamese name: Sự Thương Xót và Giải Cứu Những Người Đang Lưỡng Lự
Key terms: mercy, those who doubt, save snatching from the fire, with fear, garment stained
Review routing: Human theologian

ἔλεος (mercy) must be modeled on the personal, rescuing compassion of a covenant God who actively saves, not on từ bi (Buddhist compassion cultivated through meditative insight and practice) and not on the ritual pattern of cầu xin tổ tiên (petitioning deceased ancestors at the family altar). This mercy is extended by the church toward living, wavering members, not toward the departed.

Kept by God and Presented Blameless

Vietnamese name: Được Đức Chúa Trời Giữ Gìn và Trình Ra Không Chỗ Trách Được
Key terms: kept, keep yourselves, keep from stumbling, present blameless
Review routing: Human theologian

A single Vietnamese root (giữ) must track five distinct senses across the letter — angels’ failure to keep their position; God’s judicial custody of the fallen angels; Christ’s secure keeping of believers; believers’ own responsible self-keeping; and God’s final, decisive keeping from stumbling — without collapsing the responsibility/security tension into either pure self-effort or a fatalistic security divorced from present holiness.

Doxology and God’s Preserving Power

Vietnamese name: Lời Chúc Tôn và Quyền Năng Bảo Tồn của Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: the only God, our Savior, glory, majesty, dominion, authority, before all time forever
Review routing: Human theologian

‘The only God’ must retain explicit, unqualified monotheistic exclusivity and not be read as one savior-deity among many available in Vietnam’s pluralistic religious marketplace; ‘before all time… and forever’ must be a single unbroken eternal timeline, not the recurring cosmic ages/kalpas of Buddhist cosmology.

Inspiration and Authority of Scripture (the Enoch Citation)

Vietnamese name: Sự Soi Dẫn và Quyền Uy của Kinh Thánh (qua Lời Tiên Tri của Hê-nóc)
Key terms: prophesied, Enoch, apostles, predictions
Review routing: Human theologian

Jude’s citation of a saying paralleled in the non-canonical Book of 1 Enoch affirms that specific inspired statement without certifying the whole source document as canonical Scripture. Must be distinguished from popular Vietnamese acceptance of old almanacs or a thầy bói’s (fortune-teller’s) sayings as equally authoritative; the saying’s authority rests on its inspired inclusion in Jude’s apostolic letter, not on the antiquity or reputation of its original source.

Angelology and Spiritual Warfare

Vietnamese name: Giáo Lý về Thiên Sứ và Cuộc Chiến Thuộc Linh
Key terms: archangel Michael, the devil, angels, glorious ones
Review routing: Human theologian

‘The devil’ (ma quỷ) is the one personal, cosmic adversary of God and must not be modeled on, or confused with, the broad Vietnamese folk category of wandering or hungry ghosts (ma) placated, exorcised, or appeased through ancestor-veneration and folk ritual practice. ‘Thiên sứ’ (angels) is likewise distinct from local tutelary or ancestor spirits (thần linh).

Medium Risk Doctrines

Apostolic Warning Concerning the Last Days

Vietnamese name: Lời Cảnh Báo của Các Sứ Đồ về Thời Kỳ Sau Cùng
Key terms: apostles, last time, scoffers
Review routing: Native speaker review

‘The last time’ must be understood as a single, linear, final epoch of history moving toward Christ’s return, not one recurring stage within an ongoing cosmological cycle of ages/kalpas as in Buddhist cosmology.

Low Risk Doctrines

Mutual Edification in the Church

Vietnamese name: Sự Gây Dựng Nhau Trong Hội Thánh
Key terms: building yourselves up, love feasts
Review routing: Automated review

Standard positive counterpart to the false teachers’ divisiveness; comparatively low syncretism risk, consistent with the baseline’s Low-risk ‘Mutual Edification’ and ‘Christian Fellowship’ doctrines.
