Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — Mark
Full-Book Doctrine Matrix | English → Vietnamese
0. Method and Scope
This matrix covers Mark 1–16 in full. The core passage, Mark 10:35–45, is the theological anchor of the curriculum (Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness; The Ransom for Many) but is never treated as the boundary of analysis: every chapter is reviewed below, and chapters that introduce no new doctrine are explicitly marked “carries forward” rather than silently omitted.
Doctrine names, risk tiers, and review routing below are held identical to assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (Mark). This document adds the narrative/chapter organization and translation-risk rationale required for Phase 1 Step 4; it introduces no new risk determinations that conflict with the registry.
Risk tier definitions (unchanged from the Romans baseline, carried forward for Mark):
| Tier | Definition | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | Mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine | Human theologian, every occurrence |
| High | Mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk | Human theologian |
| Medium | Mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning | Native speaker review |
| Low | Mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding or imprecision | Automated review |
1. Full Doctrine Matrix (Narrative Order)
| # | Doctrine | Primary Mark Passages | Risk | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gospel of the Kingdom | 1:1; 1:14-15; 8:35; 10:29; 13:10; 14:9; 16:15 | Medium | Tin Lành is already the common Vietnamese name for Protestantism; must stay anchored to the specific in-breaking reign announced at 1:15, not a generic “good news” phrase. | Native speaker review |
| 2 | Sonship of Christ | 1:1; 1:11; 5:7; 9:7; 14:61-62; 15:39 | Critical | Con Đức Chúa Trời must retain eternal, co-equal Sonship; risk of being heard as an honorific claimed by a deified hero/spirit (e.g., Thánh Trần) venerated at folk temples (đền). | Human theologian |
| 3 | Deity of Christ | 2:5-12; 12:35-37; 14:61-64 | Critical | Christ’s authority to forgive sin and his identity as David’s Lord assert full deity; risk of flattening into “highly honored teacher/sage” within a Confucian moral-authority framework. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Son of Man Title | 2:10; 2:28; 8:31,38; 9:31; 10:33,45; 13:26; 14:62 | Critical | Con Người risks reading as mere “a human being,” losing the Danielic exalted-authority sense (Dan 7:13-14); over-theologizing conversely destroys the Messianic Secret’s deliberate ambiguity. Capitalize consistently; footnote Daniel 7 at each recurrence. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Authority over Sickness | 1:29-34; 1:40-45; 2:1-12; 5:21-43; 7:31-37; 8:22-26; 10:46-52 | Medium | Healing flows from Christ’s own inherent authority (quyền phép), not petition to or channeling of a spirit as in folk-healing/spirit-mediation practice (đồng bóng). | Native speaker review |
| 6 | Satanic Opposition to the Kingdom | 1:12-13; 3:22-27; 4:15; 8:33 | High | Sa-tan is one personal chief adversary already being defeated through Christ, not one folk-spirit among many (ma, quỷ) to be placated. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Authority over Demons | 1:21-28; 1:32-34; 1:39; 3:11; 3:22-27; 5:1-20; 6:7,13; 7:24-30; 9:14-29 | Critical | Quỷ / tà linh ô uế must be distinguished from folk spirit-mediation (cầu cơ, trừ tà); Christ commands unilaterally and is never a medium for the spirits he confronts. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Fulfillment of Prophecy (leprosy/purity backdrop) | 1:40-45 | Medium | Carries forward the baseline’s Fulfillment-of-Prophecy framing; healing includes social/ritual restoration under the Law, not folk-purification ritual. | Native speaker review |
| 9 | Authority over Sin (Forgiveness) | 2:1-12 | High | Tha tội as unique divine authority; risk of conflation with karma (nghiệp) dissolving through merit, ritual, or time rather than a personal God’s outright decree. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Christ’s Lordship over the Sabbath | 2:23-28; 3:1-6 | Medium | Ties Con Người and Chúa together; must not imply the Law is abolished or Sabbath observance now meaningless. | Native speaker review |
| 11 | Blasphemy against the Spirit | 3:28-30 | Critical | Sự phạm thượng names the unforgivable sin; must not be softened to generic insult nor conflated with ordinary, forgivable tội lỗi. | Human theologian |
| 12 | The True Family of God | 3:31-35 | High | Redefined kinship around obedience to God’s will risks being heard as devaluing hiếu (filial duty); must be framed as gracious inclusion, not rejection of blood family. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Mystery of the Kingdom | 4:11-12 | Critical | Sự mầu nhiệm must be distinguished from esoteric/occult secret-knowledge traditions (bí truyền, huyền bí); truth graciously disclosed, not earned through initiation. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Parables of the Kingdom | 4:1-34 | Medium | Ví dụ/thí dụ both reveal and conceal according to the hearer’s disposition; not a mere simple moral illustration. | Native speaker review |
| 15 | Authority over Nature | 4:35-41; 6:45-52 | Medium | Nature obeys Christ’s spoken command; distinct from appeasing nature spirits (thần sông, thần núi) through offering/negotiation. | Native speaker review |
| 16 | The Kingdom of God Breaking In | 1:15; 4:26-32; 9:1; 10:14-15; 14:25 | Medium | Already-and-not-yet in-breaking reign through Christ; not purely future-only hope, nor a political nation-state project. | Native speaker review |
| 17 | Healing and Salvation Overlap (sōzō) | 5:23,28,34; 6:56; 10:52; 13:13,20 | High | One Greek verb spans physical healing and eternal salvation; each occurrence requires individual contextual judgment (được lành bệnh vs. sự cứu rỗi), not a blanket rule. | Human theologian |
| 18 | Faith and Discipleship amid Fear | 4:40-41; 5:36; 6:50; 9:23-24; 10:32; 16:8 | Medium | Đức tin here coexists with real fear/doubt, including narrated failure; must not read as stoic fearlessness or fatalistic số phận acceptance. | Native speaker review |
| 19 | Discipleship Community and Fellowship | 3:14; 6:7-13,30; 9:33-35; 10:28-31 | Low | Reflects the baseline’s sự thông công; minimal risk beyond cross-document terminological consistency. | Automated review |
| 20 | Humanity of Christ | 6:3; 14:33-36; 15:34 | High | Real hunger, fatigue, anguish, abandonment-cry; not a temporary manifestation as in deity/bodhisattva human-form stories. Guard against reverent minimizing of Christ’s genuine suffering. | Human theologian |
| 21 | Fulfillment of Prophecy (John the Baptist / Elijah typology) | 6:14-29; 9:11-13 | Medium | Carries forward baseline Fulfillment-of-Prophecy doctrine; linear OT-to-NT fulfillment, not cyclical time. | Native speaker review |
| 22 | True Purity versus Ritual Defilement | 7:1-23 | High | Jesus relocates defilement to the heart’s moral condition; no exact parallel in folk ritual-purity categories (purification rites at đền/chùa). Critique of paradosis (truyền thống) must not be heard as blanket rejection of ancestral tradition. | Human theologian |
| 23 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles (generic ἔθνη sense) | 7:24-30; 10:42; 11:17; 13:10 | Medium | dân ngoại reused for lexical consistency; 10:42’s generic “worldly nations” sense requires a translator note to prevent conflation with the Jew-Gentile salvation-historical category. | Native speaker review |
| 24 | The Messianic Secret | 1:34,44; 3:12; 5:43; 7:36; 8:29-30; 9:9 | High | Deliberate strategy of gradual disclosure tied to the cross being understood first; risk of assimilation to bí truyền (esoteric inner-circle teaching) rather than temporary veiling later fully unveiled (13:26; 15:39). | Human theologian |
| 25 | Suffering Servant of Isaiah | 9:12; 10:45; 14:24; 15:1-39 | High | Vicarious suffering on behalf of “many”; risk of reframing through Buddhist merit-accumulation (tích đức) for oneself rather than substitutionary suffering for others. | Human theologian |
| 26 | Passion Predictions | 8:31; 9:30-32; 10:32-34 | High | Repeated, deliberate self-prediction of suffering/death/resurrection; sovereign, willing foreknowledge — not fate imposed by nghiệp or số phận. | Human theologian |
| 27 | The Cost of Discipleship | 1:16-20; 8:34-38; 10:21,28-31; 10:35-45 | High | Cross-bearing/self-denial distinct from Buddhist renunciation (xuất gia, tu hành) undertaken toward one’s own liberation; cost flows from union with and imitation of Christ. | Human theologian |
| 28 | Incarnation | 10:45; 1:1 | Critical | Mark has no birth narrative, but “the Son of Man came” presupposes the eternal Son permanently assuming human nature, once. Never hóa thân (one manifestation among many). | Human theologian |
| 29 | Eternal Life and the Cost of Discipleship | 10:17-31 | High | Sự sống đời đời distinct from a works-merit framework and from Buddhist liberation from rebirth (sự giải thoát); received by grace through costly discipleship. | Human theologian |
| 30 | Necessity of the Cross | 8:31; 9:31; 10:33-34,45; 14:22-24,36; 15:20-39 | Critical | Repeated δεῖ (“must”); unrepeatable, once-for-all atoning event. Risk of softening into one exemplary instance of meritorious suffering among many. | Human theologian |
| 31 | The Ransom for Many | 10:45; 14:24 | Critical | Giá chuộc paid by Christ alone, once, in substitution (“thay cho”), for many; never modeled on merit-based self-redemption. Anchors the core passage, Mark 10:35-45. | Human theologian |
| 32 | Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness | 9:33-37; 10:35-45 | High | Đầy tớ / tôi mọi must preserve the escalating rhetorical pair, not collapse into ordinary Confucian hierarchical servant status; greatness is voluntary, Christ-modeled self-giving, not inverted worldly merit-logic. Anchors the core passage. | Human theologian |
| 33 | Davidic Messianic Promise | 10:47-48; 11:9-10; 12:35-37 | Medium | Requires OT covenant background; no rival Vietnamese messianic-Davidic figure, so risk is unfamiliarity, not syncretism. Must preserve the paradox: Messiah is David’s son AND David’s Lord. | Native speaker review |
| 34 | Temple Judgment | 11:11-25; 13:1-2 | High | Prophetic judgment on corrupted worship, foreshadowing the Temple’s replacement by Christ’s body/community. đền thờ must not be confused with, or lend associations to, the baseline’s Hội Thánh. | Human theologian |
| 35 | Eschatological Watchfulness | 13:1-37 | Medium | Urgent vigilance for the Son of Man’s return; must not flatten into fatalistic waiting on impersonal số trời, but active, alert faith in a personal God’s sovereign timetable. | Native speaker review |
| 36 | Institution of the Lord’s Supper | 14:22-25 | Critical | ”Blood of the covenant… for many” echoes 10:45’s ransom language directly; must retain sacrificial, substitutionary force, and not be confused with ancestor-veneration food/drink offerings (cúng cơm, giỗ). | Human theologian |
| 37 | Gethsemane and the Father’s Will | 14:32-42 | High | Áp-ba/Cha intimacy amid real anguish and fear must retain grace-based intimacy, not formal filial obligation (đạo hiếu) — the pattern the baseline’s Romans 8:15 doctrine later extends to believers. | Human theologian |
| 38 | Peter’s Denial and the Hope of Restoration | 14:27-31; 14:66-72; 16:7 | Medium | Failure under fear (chối) is not final; retain the implicit hope of restoration without over-reading permanent, unrecoverable shame within Vietnamese honor-shame frameworks. | Native speaker review |
| 39 | Thanksgiving | 6:41; 8:6; 14:23 | Low | Standard term (reuse baseline sự cảm tạ); minimal doctrinal risk in feeding narratives and Last Supper. | Automated review |
| 40 | Crucifixion and Kingship | 15:1-39 | Critical | The mocking title “King of the Jews” is ironically true kingship achieved through the cross, fulfilling the Servanthood-vs-Greatness paradox of 10:42-45; must retain full theological weight, not mere dramatic irony. | Human theologian |
| 41 | Resurrection of Christ | 16:1-8; 16:9-20 (longer ending) | Critical | Climactic vindication of every Son of Man saying and the cross’s necessity. Absolutely never đầu thai/luân hồi (rebirth/reincarnation), per baseline forbidden-substitution rule applied with full force. | Human theologian |
| 42 | Great Commission Proclamation | 16:15-20 (longer ending) | Medium | Confirming signs (dấu lạ) must stay tied explicitly to proclaimed Tin Lành, not blend with folk điềm (omens) or independent divination. | Native speaker review |
(Note: the matrix above numbers 42 rows because two Fulfillment-of-Prophecy carry-forward entries [#8, #21] and the generic-sense Unity-of-Jews-and-Gentiles entry [#23] are recorded here for full-book traceability even though they are represented in the registry under the baseline’s existing Romans-derived doctrine keys rather than as new Mark-specific registry keys. All 39 doctrine keys unique to doctrine_risk_registry.json for Mark are present above; risk tiers and routing for every registry key are unchanged.)

3. Core Passage Doctrinal Convergence — Mark 10:35–45
The core passage is the point where the greatest concentration of Critical- and High-risk doctrine converges in the entire book:
- Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness (High) — the disciples’ request for status versus Christ’s servant paradigm (vv. 35-44)
- The Ransom for Many (Critical) — v. 45’s λύτρον ἀντὶ πολλῶν, the doctrinal and lexical climax of the whole Gospel
- Son of Man Title (Critical) — v. 45’s self-designation, tying Danielic authority to voluntary self-giving
- Necessity of the Cross / Suffering Servant of Isaiah (Critical/High) — the “cup” (v. 38) and “baptism” (v. 39) as figures for the passion already predicted in 10:33-34
- The Cost of Discipleship (High) — vv. 38-39’s implicit call for James and John to share Christ’s suffering
No other single passage in Mark carries this density of Critical-tier doctrine; all downstream translation review for this curriculum should treat 10:35-45 as requiring full human theologian sign-off on every clause.

Critical Risk Doctrines
Sonship of Christ
Vietnamese name: Địa Vị Con của Đấng Christ
Key terms: son of God, beloved Son, my Son
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Con Đức Chúa Trời must retain eternal, unique divine Sonship. Readers from an ancestor-veneration or deified-hero background (e.g., Thánh Trần venerated at folk temples, đền) risk hearing ‘Con’ as an honorific title claimed by a spirit or hero rather than co-equal, eternal Sonship within the Godhead.
Deity of Christ
Vietnamese name: Thần Tính của Đấng Christ
Key terms: lord, son of God, I am
Review routing: Human theologian
Jesus’ authority to forgive sins and his identity as David’s Lord assert full deity, not merely exceptional religious insight. Risk of these claims being flattened into the status of a highly honored teacher or sage within a Confucian framework of moral authority, rather than co-equal divine identity.
Son of Man Title
Vietnamese name: Danh Hiệu Con Người
Key terms: Son of Man
Review routing: Human theologian
Con Người risks being read merely as ‘a human being,’ losing the Danielic exalted-authority dimension (Dan 7:13-14); over-theologizing the phrase, conversely, destroys the deliberate ambiguity central to the Messianic Secret. Requires consistent capitalized rendering and a footnote anchoring it to Daniel 7 at every recurrence.
Incarnation
Vietnamese name: Sự Nhập Thể
Key terms: came, Son of Man came, flesh
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Mark has no birth narrative, but 10:45’s ‘the Son of Man came’ presupposes the eternal Son permanently taking on human nature, once. Never framed through hóa thân, the Buddhist concept of a bodhisattva’s or deity’s manifestation into a body as one instance among many possible manifestations.
Mystery of the Kingdom
Vietnamese name: Sự Mầu Nhiệm của Nước Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: mystery, secret of the kingdom, parable
Review routing: Human theologian
Sự mầu nhiệm must be distinguished from esoteric/occult secret-knowledge traditions (bí truyền, huyền bí) present in Vietnamese folk religion and Buddhism; this is truth God graciously discloses to disciples, not knowledge earned through initiation, ritual, or hidden practice.
Jesus’ Authority over Demons
Vietnamese name: Quyền Năng của Đấng Christ trên Các Quỷ
Key terms: demon, unclean spirit, cast out, Legion
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Quỷ / tà linh ô uế must be distinguished from folk spirit-mediation practices (cầu cơ, trừ tà) where a shaman or medium negotiates with or manipulates spirits. Christ commands with unilateral, decisive divine authority, once, and is never himself a channel or medium for the spirits he confronts.
The Necessity of the Cross
Vietnamese name: Sự Cần Thiết của Cây Thập Tự
Key terms: must suffer, must be killed, cross, delivered up
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Christ’s death is presented as divinely necessary (a repeated δεῖ, ‘must’) and unrepeatable, once-for-all. Risk of the cross being softened into one exemplary instance of meritorious suffering among many, rather than the singular, necessary atoning event fulfilling Isaiah 53 and inaugurating the new covenant.
The Ransom for Many
Vietnamese name: Giá Chuộc cho Nhiều Người
Key terms: ransom, for many, give his life, blood of the covenant
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Giá chuộc, paid by Christ alone, once, in substitution (‘thay cho’), for many, must never be modeled on Buddhist merit-based self-redemption (chuộc tội through the sinner’s own good works or ritual offerings). Also guard against reading the ransom as a business transaction devoid of its substitutionary, self-giving force.
Blasphemy against the Spirit
Vietnamese name: Sự Phạm Thượng đến Đức Thánh Linh
Key terms: blasphemy, unforgivable, eternal sin
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Sự phạm thượng names the unforgivable sin — deliberate, informed attribution of the Spirit’s manifest work to Satan. Must not be softened to generic rudeness or insult, nor conflated with ordinary, forgivable tội lỗi.
Institution of the Lord’s Supper
Vietnamese name: Sự Lập Lễ Tiệc Thánh
Key terms: this is my body, blood of the covenant, poured out for many
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: ‘My blood of the covenant… for many’ directly echoes the ransom language of 10:45; must retain sacrificial, substitutionary force and not be reduced to a merely symbolic commemorative meal, nor confused with ancestor-veneration food and drink offerings (cúng cơm, giỗ) presented at the family altar.
Crucifixion and Kingship
Vietnamese name: Sự Đóng Đinh và Địa Vị Làm Vua
Key terms: King of the Jews, crucified, veil torn
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: The mocking title ‘King of the Jews’ is ironically true kingship achieved through the cross, directly fulfilling the Servanthood-versus-Greatness paradox of 10:42-45. Must not be flattened into ordinary dramatic irony without conveying the full theological weight that the King’s throne is the cross.
Resurrection of Christ
Vietnamese name: Sự Sống Lại của Đấng Christ
Key terms: he has risen, not here, resurrection
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Sự sống lại, the climactic vindication of the whole Gospel’s Son of Man sayings (10:45), the cross’s necessity, and the Father’s approval of the Son. Absolutely never đầu thai/luân hồi (rebirth/reincarnation within the cycle of samsara), per the baseline’s forbidden-substitution rule, applied here with full force.
High Risk Doctrines
The Messianic Secret
Vietnamese name: Sự Bí Ẩn về Đấng Mê-si-a
Key terms: tell no one, keep silent, who do you say I am
Review routing: Human theologian
Jesus’ repeated commands to silence are a deliberate strategy of gradual disclosure tied to the necessity of the cross being understood first, not perpetual concealment. Risk that Vietnamese readers may assimilate this pattern to bí truyền (esoteric teaching reserved for an inner circle), a category present in Vietnamese Buddhist and folk-religious tradition, rather than a temporary veiling that is later fully unveiled (13:26; 15:39).
Suffering Servant of Isaiah
Vietnamese name: Người Đầy Tớ Chịu Khổ theo Ê-sai
Key terms: ransom, for many, cup, poured out
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s suffering fulfills Isaiah 53’s servant who bears the guilt of ‘many.’ Risk that this vicarious, substitutionary suffering is reframed through a Buddhist lens of enduring suffering to accumulate merit (tích đức) for oneself, rather than suffering borne on behalf of others by a unique servant-Messiah.
Humanity of Christ
Vietnamese name: Nhân Tính của Đấng Christ
Key terms: carpenter’s son, troubled, sorrowful, my God, my God
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s hunger, fatigue, anguish, and cry of abandonment reflect fully real human experience, not a temporary manifestation as in stories of deities or bodhisattvas appearing in human form. Risk of readers minimizing the reality of Christ’s human suffering out of reverence, treating it as merely apparent.
Jesus’ Authority over Sin
Vietnamese name: Quyền Tha Tội của Đấng Christ
Key terms: forgive sins, authority to forgive, your sins are forgiven
Review routing: Human theologian
Jesus claims unique divine authority to forgive sin (tha tội) as a debt only God can release. Risk of conflation with the Buddhist notion that bad karma (nghiệp) is dissolved through merit, ritual, or the passage of time rather than granted outright by a personal God’s authoritative decree.
The Cost of Discipleship
Vietnamese name: Giá Phải Trả để Theo Đấng Christ
Key terms: take up his cross, deny himself, sold all, follow me
Review routing: Human theologian
Costly self-denial and cross-bearing must be distinguished from Buddhist renunciation practice (xuất gia, tu hành) undertaken to accumulate merit toward one’s own liberation; discipleship’s cost flows from union with and imitation of Christ, not self-generated spiritual achievement.
Passion Predictions
Vietnamese name: Những Lời Báo Trước về Sự Thương Khó
Key terms: must suffer, be killed, after three days rise
Review routing: Human theologian
Jesus repeatedly and deliberately predicts his own suffering, death, and resurrection as necessary and foreknown; must be rendered as sovereign, willing foreknowledge, not as a fate imposed by impersonal karma (nghiệp) or destiny (số phận).
Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness
Vietnamese name: Sự Làm Đầy Tớ Đối Nghịch với Sự Làm Lớn theo Thế Gian
Key terms: servant, slave, first, last, not so among you
Review routing: Human theologian
Đầy tớ / tôi mọi must preserve an escalating rhetorical pair rather than collapsing into ordinary Confucian social-hierarchy servant status; kingdom greatness is achieved through voluntary, Christ-modeled self-giving service, not by inverting worldly rank while keeping its logic of merit and status intact.
The True Family of God
Vietnamese name: Gia Đình Thật của Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: brothers, sister, mother, whoever does the will of God
Review routing: Human theologian
Redefining kinship around obedience to God’s will risks being heard as devaluing filial duty (hiếu) and blood-family obligation central to Vietnamese Confucian-shaped culture; must be framed as gracious inclusion into God’s family, not rejection of blood family or ancestral honor.
True Purity versus Ritual Defilement
Vietnamese name: Sự Trong Sạch Thật đối lại Sự Ô Uế theo Nghi Thức
Key terms: defiled, unclean, tradition, what comes out of a man
Review routing: Human theologian
Jesus relocates true defilement from ritual/external categories to the heart’s moral condition — a distinction with no exact parallel in folk ritual-purity categories (e.g., purification rites at đền/chùa) and requiring explicit unpacking; the critique of paradosis must not be heard as a blanket rejection of ancestral tradition or family honor.
Eternal Life and the Cost of Discipleship
Vietnamese name: Sự Sống Đời Đời và Giá Phải Trả để Theo Chúa
Key terms: eternal life, inherit, sell all, who then can be saved
Review routing: Human theologian
Sự sống đời đời must be kept distinct from a works-merit framework implied by the rich young man’s question, and from Buddhist liberation from rebirth (sự giải thoát); eternal life is received by grace through costly discipleship, not earned by ascetic achievement or almsgiving.
Temple Judgment
Vietnamese name: Sự Phán Xét trên Đền Thờ
Key terms: house of prayer, den of robbers, not one stone left
Review routing: Human theologian
The Temple-clearing and prediction of destruction enact prophetic judgment on corrupted worship, foreshadowing the Temple’s replacement by Christ’s body/community. Đền thờ must not be confused with, nor lend its associations to, the baseline’s Hội Thánh (Church) term, which deliberately avoids đền because of its folk-temple connotations.
Gethsemane and the Father’s Will
Vietnamese name: Vườn Ghết-sê-ma-nê và Ý Muốn của Đức Chúa Cha
Key terms: Abba, Father, not what I will, this cup
Review routing: Human theologian
Jesus’ Abba/Father prayer models submission to the Father’s will amid real anguish and fear. The Áp-ba/Cha intimacy must not be reduced to formal filial obligation (đạo hiếu) but retain grace-based intimacy, now shown to originate in Christ’s own relationship with the Father before it is given to believers (cf. Romans 8:15).
Healing and Salvation Overlap
Vietnamese name: Sự Trùng Lặp giữa Sự Lành Bệnh và Sự Cứu Rỗi
Key terms: sōzō, made you well, saved, healed
Review routing: Human theologian
The single Greek verb σῴζω covers both physical healing and eternal salvation; Vietnamese translators must evaluate each occurrence individually (được lành bệnh vs. sự cứu rỗi) rather than defaulting to one sense, to avoid either overclaiming salvation in a healing narrative or stripping intended soteriological resonance from a healing account.
Satanic Opposition to the Kingdom
Vietnamese name: Sự Chống Nghịch của Sa-tan đối với Nước Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: Satan, tempted, Beelzebul, get behind me, Satan
Review routing: Human theologian
Sa-tan is a single personal chief adversary opposing God’s kingdom, already being defeated through Christ’s ministry; risk of assimilation into the broad Vietnamese folk category of malevolent spirits (ma, quỷ) understood as one among many local spirits to be placated rather than the singular, decisive, already-opposed adversary of this Gospel’s narrative.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Gospel of the Kingdom
Vietnamese name: Tin Lành về Nước Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: gospel, good news, kingdom of God
Review routing: Native speaker review
Tin Lành is already so established it is the common Vietnamese name for Protestantism; in Mark it must be anchored specifically to the in-breaking kingdom announced in 1:15, not left as a generic ‘good news’ phrase detached from the reign of God now arriving.
The Kingdom of God Breaking In
Vietnamese name: Nước Đức Chúa Trời Đang Đến Gần
Key terms: kingdom of God, at hand, has come near
Review routing: Native speaker review
Nước Đức Chúa Trời is well established; must be read as God’s dynamic, already-and-not-yet in-breaking reign through Christ, not a purely future-only hope nor a political nation-state project.
Jesus’ Authority over Sickness
Vietnamese name: Quyền Năng của Đấng Christ trên Bệnh Tật
Key terms: healed, made well, authority, leprosy
Review routing: Native speaker review
Christ heals by his own inherent, legitimate authority (quyền phép), not by petitioning, being possessed by, or channeling a spirit as in folk-healing or spirit-mediation practice (đồng bóng); the source of healing must remain unambiguously Christ’s own divine power.
Jesus’ Authority over Nature
Vietnamese name: Quyền Năng của Đấng Christ trên Thiên Nhiên
Key terms: wind and sea obey, calmed the storm, walked on the water
Review routing: Native speaker review
Nature obeys Christ’s direct spoken command; keep distinct from folk practices of appeasing nature spirits (thần sông, thần núi) through offering or ritual negotiation — Christ commands, he is not petitioned.
Faith and Discipleship amid Fear
Vietnamese name: Đức Tin và Sự Theo Chúa Giữa Cơn Sợ Hãi
Key terms: do not be afraid, why are you afraid, I believe; help my unbelief, they were afraid
Review routing: Native speaker review
Faith (đức tin) here is honest trust that coexists with real fear and doubt, including narrated failure; must not be read as stoic fearlessness or fatalistic acceptance of an outcome already fixed (an bài theo số phận).
Christ’s Lordship over the Sabbath
Vietnamese name: Quyền Làm Chúa của Đấng Christ trên Ngày Sa-bát
Key terms: Son of Man is lord, Sabbath, lord even of the Sabbath
Review routing: Native speaker review
Ties Con Người and Chúa titles together; must retain Christ’s authority over the Law’s institutions without implying the Law itself is abolished or that Sabbath observance is now meaningless.
Parables of the Kingdom
Vietnamese name: Các Ví Dụ về Nước Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: parable, sower, mustard seed, growing seed
Review routing: Native speaker review
Ví dụ / thí dụ must be taught as a device that both reveals and conceals kingdom truth according to the hearer’s disposition, not merely a simple moral illustration divorced from the Messianic Secret’s revelatory logic.
Davidic Messianic Promise
Vietnamese name: Lời Hứa về Đấng Mê-si-a Thuộc Dòng Đa-vít
Key terms: Son of David, David called him Lord
Review routing: Native speaker review
Requires OT covenant background; Vietnamese culture has no rival messianic-Davidic figure, so the primary risk is unfamiliarity rather than syncretism. Must preserve the paradox that the Messiah is both David’s son and David’s Lord.
Eschatological Watchfulness
Vietnamese name: Sự Tỉnh Thức Trông Đợi Ngày Sau Rốt
Key terms: watch, be alert, no one knows the day or hour
Review routing: Native speaker review
Urgent vigilance for the Son of Man’s return must not be flattened into fatalistic waiting for an impersonal số trời (fate-dispensing Heaven), but active, alert faith grounded in a personal God’s sovereign timetable.
Peter’s Denial and the Hope of Restoration
Vietnamese name: Sự Chối Chúa của Phi-e-rơ và Hy Vọng Được Phục Hồi
Key terms: deny, wept, go tell his disciples and Peter
Review routing: Native speaker review
Failure under fear (chối) is not the final word; must retain the implicit hope of restoration (16:7) without over-reading shame dynamics into permanent, unrecoverable disgrace within Vietnamese honor-shame cultural frameworks.
Great Commission Proclamation
Vietnamese name: Sứ Mệnh Rao Truyền Tin Lành cho Muôn Dân
Key terms: go into all the world, preach the gospel, signs
Review routing: Native speaker review
Confirming signs (dấu lạ) accompanying gospel proclamation must be kept tied explicitly to the proclaimed Tin Lành, not left to blend with folk điềm (omens) or independent divination practices.
Low Risk Doctrines
Thanksgiving
Vietnamese name: Sự Cảm Tạ
Key terms: gave thanks, blessed
Review routing: Automated review
Standard term (REUSE baseline sự cảm tạ); minimal doctrinal risk in the feeding narratives and Last Supper.
Discipleship Community and Fellowship
Vietnamese name: Sự Thông Công trong Cộng Đồng Các Môn Đồ
Key terms: the Twelve, sent them out two by two, followed him
Review routing: Automated review
The Twelve’s shared life and mission reflect the baseline’s sự thông công (fellowship) concept; minimal doctrinal risk beyond maintaining terminological consistency with the Romans baseline.
