Biblical Theme Map
10 Biblical Theme Map — Ephesians (English → Vietnamese)
Purpose
This document maps Ephesians’ theme structure onto the whole canon’s storyline and shows how the letter’s nine curriculum doctrines connect backward into the Old Testament and sideways into the Romans Language Package already established for Vietnamese. It complements 09_cross_reference_analysis.md (which tracks specific citations) by tracing thematic arcs across Scripture and across curricula.
Section 1: The Letter’s Own Theme Structure
Ephesians has a recognized two-part architecture that itself carries translation significance:
- Chapters 1–3 (Indicative — who believers ARE): a sustained meditation on God’s eternal plan, accomplished in Christ, applied to the church — election (ch.1), salvation and new humanity (ch.2), mystery and prayer (ch.3).
- Chapters 4–6 (Imperative — how believers are to WALK): practical outworking of that identity — unity and gifts (ch.4:1-16), personal holiness (ch.4:17–5:20), household relationships (5:21–6:9), spiritual warfare (6:10-20).
The hinge word is περιπατέω (“walk,” ăn ở/bước đi), which occurs at the pivot of ch.2 (the old “walk” of death, 2:2, reversed into the new “walk” of good works, 2:10) and then governs the entire ethical section (4:1,17; 5:2,8,15). Every occurrence must be tracked as the same recurring keyword; see 08_core_glossary.md.
A second structuring phrase, “in Christ” / “in Christ Jesus” / “in him”, occurs roughly 30 times through the letter and is the theological glue connecting the indicative and imperative sections — believers’ new status and new conduct are both located “in Christ,” never in ancestral lineage, family religious duty, or accumulated merit (reinforcing the baseline’s Christian Identity in Christ doctrine).
A third structuring phrase, “heavenly places” (τὰ ἐπουράνια), binds together Christ’s exaltation (1:20), the church’s present position (2:6), the cosmic display of God’s wisdom (3:10), and the spiritual conflict of ch.6 (6:12) — showing that Ephesians’ theology of salvation, ecclesiology, and spiritual warfare are one integrated whole, not separate topics.
Section 2: The Nine Curriculum Doctrines Across the Canon
1. Salvation by Grace through Faith
- Creation/Fall root: Genesis 3 — humanity’s fall into death, the condition Ephesians 2:1-3 describes (“dead in trespasses”).
- Patriarchal anchor: Genesis 15:6 — Abraham’s faith credited as righteousness, the OT template for grace-through-faith (directly quoted in Romans 4:3; thematically identical to Ephesians 2:8-9 though not directly cited there).
- Prophetic anchor: Isaiah 64:8 — humanity as clay in the potter’s hands, echoed in Ephesians 2:10’s “workmanship.”
- Fulfillment in Christ: Ephesians 2:4-10 — grace, faith, not works, God’s gift, good works as fruit.
- Romans connection: Romans 3:21–4:25 is the fullest prior treatment of this doctrine in the Vietnamese Language Package; Ephesians 2:8-9 is its most compressed, memorable restatement. Vocabulary must match exactly (see 09, Section D).
- Vietnamese cultural touchpoint: the single sharpest point of contrast with Buddhist công đức (accumulated merit) and Confucian đức hạnh (cultivated virtue); grace-by-faith is the gospel’s most countercultural claim in this context.
2. Election and Predestination in Christ
- Creation root: Genesis 1 — “before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4) presupposes a Creator who plans prior to creation itself.
- Covenant anchor: Deuteronomy 7:6-8 — God’s choice of Israel grounded in his own love, not Israel’s size or merit; the OT template for unconditional election.
- Prophetic anchor: Exodus 33:19 (quoted in Romans 9:15) — “I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy,” the classic OT statement of sovereign, personal choice.
- Fulfillment in Christ: Ephesians 1:3-14 — chosen, predestined, adopted, sealed, all “in Christ,” before time and applied in time through the gospel (1:13, “when you believed”).
- Romans connection: Romans 8:28-30; 9:6-24 develop the same doctrine at length; Ephesians 1 is its most doxological (worship-shaped) presentation.
- Vietnamese cultural touchpoint: the doctrine most at risk of collapsing into folk fatalism (số phận, số mệnh, nghiệp); must be taught as compatible with, not opposed to, genuine human belief and responsibility.
3. The Church as the Body of Christ
- OT background: no single OT body-metaphor precedent, but strong temple/dwelling-place imagery (Exodus 25:8; 1 Kings 6; Ezekiel 40-48) and corporate-Israel-as-one-people imagery (Exodus 19:5-6).
- Fulfillment in Christ: Ephesians 1:22-23; 2:19-22; 4:4,12,16; 5:23,30 — the church as Christ’s organic body and God’s own indwelt temple.
- Romans connection: Romans 12:4-5 introduces the body metaphor briefly for the purpose of spiritual-gift diversity; Ephesians develops it into a full ecclesiology bound up with Christ’s headship and cosmic fullness.
- Vietnamese cultural touchpoint: must be distinguished from a folk temple (đền) housing a deified hero or local spirit; the church is a living, Spirit-indwelt people, not a shrine.
4. Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
- OT background: the Abrahamic promise that “all nations” would be blessed through Abraham’s seed (Genesis 12:3; 22:18); Isaiah’s servant as “a light to the Gentiles” (Isaiah 49:6); Isaiah’s vision of peace to those far and near (Isaiah 57:19).
- Fulfillment in Christ: Ephesians 2:11-22 — the dividing wall abolished, one new man created, both reconciled to God in one body through the cross.
- Romans connection: Romans 3:29-30; 9–11 (especially the olive-tree image, Romans 11:17-24) is the extended prior treatment; Ephesians 2 is the doctrine’s most vivid single-passage statement.
- Vietnamese cultural touchpoint: comparatively low direct folk-religious collision risk; the main task is OT/covenant-history background teaching for an audience with generally low OT narrative literacy.
5. The Mystery of Christ Revealed
- OT background: Daniel’s use of “mystery” (Daniel 2:18-19,28-30) for divinely disclosed, previously hidden truth — the closest OT precedent for Paul’s μυστήριον vocabulary.
- Fulfillment in Christ: Ephesians 1:9-10; 3:2-11; 5:32; 6:19 — the mystery is specifically Gentile inclusion with Israel in one body, and secondarily marriage as a picture of Christ and the church.
- Romans connection: Romans 11:25 (mystery of Israel’s partial hardening) and Romans 16:25-27 (doxological reference to the mystery now revealed) use the identical Greek term; Vietnamese rendering must be identical across both books.
- Vietnamese cultural touchpoint: sharply distinguish from esoteric/occult “huyền bí” (secret knowledge gained through initiation or meditative attainment); Paul’s mystery is now openly proclaimed to everyone.
6. Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God
- OT background: the Divine Warrior motif (Exodus 15:3; Isaiah 59:17, the LORD himself arming for battle with righteousness and salvation; Isaiah 11:5, the Messiah girded with righteousness).
- Fulfillment in Christ: Ephesians 6:10-20 — believers now wear the very armor once described as God’s/the Messiah’s own, because Christ has already triumphed over the powers (1:20-21; Colossians 2:15, a wider-canon parallel).
- Romans connection: Romans 8:38 (“nor rulers, nor powers”) and Romans 13:12 (“put on the armor of light”) are brief anticipations; Ephesians 6 is the canon’s fullest single development of this motif.
- Vietnamese cultural touchpoint: the single largest new syncretism-risk category introduced by this curriculum — must be sharply distinguished from Vietnamese folk spirit-hierarchy (thổ địa, thành hoàng, vong linh), protective amulets (bùa), and ritual specialists (thầy pháp, thầy cúng). See
07_semantic_analysis.mdand08_core_glossary.md.
7. Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
- OT background: the Fifth Commandment (Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16); the marriage-covenant metaphor for God and Israel (Hosea 2:16-20; Ezekiel 16:8-14; Isaiah 54:5, 62:5); household/family legislation (Leviticus 25; Deuteronomy 15, on servants).
- Fulfillment in Christ: Ephesians 5:21–6:9 — mutual submission, Christ-modeled sacrificial love in marriage, filial obedience “in the Lord,” servant-master relations under a shared heavenly Master.
- Romans connection: Romans 13:1-7 (authority) and Romans 6:16-22 (slave/master as theological metaphor) provide partial precedent, but the household-specific application is unique to Ephesians (and its close parallel, Colossians 3:18–4:1, outside this Language Package’s current scope).
- Vietnamese cultural touchpoint: requires the most nuanced navigation in the whole curriculum — genuine positive overlap with Vietnamese filial-piety (hiếu kính) and family-honor values, alongside a clear relocation of ultimate authority “in the Lord” rather than in an autonomous ancestral-hierarchical system.
8. Gifts for Building Up the Church
- OT background: God’s raising up of specific leaders/shepherds for his people (Jeremiah 3:15; Isaiah 61:1, anointed for a specific task).
- Fulfillment in Christ: Ephesians 4:7-16 — Christ’s ascension gifts of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers, given to equip the whole body for growth into maturity.
- Romans connection: Romans 12:6-8 lists spiritual gifts (charismata) generally; Ephesians 4 specifies particular equipping offices distinct from, though related to, that broader gift-list. Keep the two categories (ân tứ thuộc linh vs. the office-list of Ephesians 4:11) visibly distinct.
- Vietnamese cultural touchpoint: established modern Vietnamese Protestant church-office vocabulary; low syncretism risk, but must be kept distinct from Buddhist monastic teacher (thầy) or folk ritual-specialist roles.
9. Walking in Newness of Life
- OT background: the “new heart, new spirit” promise (Ezekiel 36:26); the “walk” idiom for covenant faithfulness throughout the Torah and Psalms (e.g., Psalm 1:1, Genesis 17:1, “walk before me”).
- Fulfillment in Christ: Ephesians 4:17–5:20 — old man/new man, renewed mind, walking in love and light, being filled with the Spirit.
- Romans connection: Romans 6:1-11 (dead to sin, alive to God) and Romans 12:1-2 (renewed mind, discerning God’s will) are the doctrine’s earlier statement; Ephesians 4–5 supplies the fullest itemized ethical outworking.
- Vietnamese cultural touchpoint: two acute risk points — (a) the fragrant-offering/sacrifice language of 5:2, requiring explicit distinction from ancestor-offering ritual; (b) the “filled with the Spirit” language of 5:18, requiring explicit distinction from spirit-mediumship trance (hầu đồng/lên đồng).
Section 3: Canonical Storyline Map
| Epoch | Key OT Text(s) | Ephesians Connection | Theological Thread |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creation | Genesis 1:26-27 | Ephesians 4:24 (“new man” created after God’s likeness) | Humanity made in God’s image; re-made in Christ. |
| Fall | Genesis 2:17; 3:1-19 | Ephesians 2:1-3 (“dead in trespasses”) | Universal human deadness apart from God’s initiative. |
| Promise (Abraham) | Genesis 12:3; 15:6; 22:18 | Ephesians 2:8-9 (grace/faith); 3:6 (Gentiles fellow heirs) | Blessing to all nations by faith, not lineage or law. |
| Exodus/Redemption | Exodus 12; Leviticus 16 | Ephesians 1:7 (redemption through his blood) | Deliverance purchased at a cost, applied by grace. |
| Covenant/Temple | Exodus 19:5-6; 1 Kings 6; Ezekiel 40-48 | Ephesians 2:19-22 (holy temple, God’s dwelling) | The church as the new, living temple. |
| Davidic Kingship | Psalm 8:6; Psalm 110:1 | Ephesians 1:20-22 (Christ enthroned, all things under his feet) | Messianic enthronement fulfilled in Christ’s exaltation. |
| Prophetic Hope | Isaiah 9:6; 28:16; 52:7; 57:19; 59:17; 63:10 | Ephesians 2:14,17,20; 4:30; 6:14-17 | Peace, cornerstone, gospel-feet, armor, grieving the Spirit — all directly rooted in Isaiah. |
| Mystery Disclosed | Daniel 2:18-19,28-30 | Ephesians 3:2-11 (mystery of Christ, Gentile inclusion) | Hidden divine plan now openly revealed. |
| New Covenant Renewal | Ezekiel 36:26; Jeremiah 31:31-34 | Ephesians 4:22-24 (new man, renewed mind) | Inner transformation, not external ritual observance. |
| Consummation (forward-looking) | Isaiah 60:1-2; 65:17 | Ephesians 1:10 (“fullness of times,” uniting all things); 5:14 (hymn: “Christ shall shine on you”) | Linear, historical trajectory toward a final, cosmic gathering in Christ — not a cyclical cosmology. |
Section 4: Cross-Curriculum Theme Connections (Romans ↔ Ephesians)
| Shared Theme | Romans Treatment | Ephesians Treatment | Vietnamese Consistency Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grace excludes works | Romans 3:21–4:25; 11:5-6 | Ephesians 2:8-9 | Identical core vocabulary (ân điển, đức tin, việc làm); see 09, Section D. |
| Election/predestination | Romans 8:28-30; 9:6-24 | Ephesians 1:3-14 | ”Được chọn”/“sự định trước” must be harmonized; Ephesians introduces the Critical new term sự định trước not present in the baseline. |
| Adoption/Sonship | Romans 8:14-17,23 | Ephesians 1:5 | Reuse [Romans TM: sự làm con nuôi] exactly. |
| Body of Christ | Romans 12:4-5 | Ephesians 1:22-23; 4:4,12,16; 5:23,30 | Same organic-union teaching; Ephesians expands with “head/fullness” vocabulary absent from Romans. |
| Jew-Gentile unity | Romans 3:29-30; 9–11 | Ephesians 2:11-22; 3:6 | Shared “no distinction” formula; shared Isaiah 28:16 citation (cornerstone). |
| Spiritual powers | Romans 8:38 | Ephesians 1:21; 3:10; 6:12 | Single stable Vietnamese term-set for archē/exousia/dynamis/kyriotēs. |
| Armor imagery | Romans 13:12,14 | Ephesians 6:11-17 | Harmonized “armor” vocabulary; Ephesians’ itemized list is a unique expansion. |
| Old self/new self | Romans 6:6; 12:2 | Ephesians 4:22-24 | Same decisive-change doctrine; Vietnamese “người cũ/người mới” should track Romans’ “cũ…được biến hóa” language where it overlaps. |
| Prayer/intercession | Romans 8:26-27; 15:30-32 | Ephesians 3:14-19; 6:18-20 | Reinforces, does not alter, the baseline’s Critical caution against ancestor-petition framing. |
| Universal human accountability | Romans 1:18–3:20; 2:11 | Ephesians 2:1-3; 6:9 | Shared “no partiality” formula (Romans 2:11 / Ephesians 6:9). |
| Resurrection-life union | Romans 6:4-5; 8:11 | Ephesians 1:19-20; 2:5-6 | Forbidden-substitution rule against đầu thai/luân hồi applies identically in both books. |
Section 5: Recurring Motif-Tracing Tables
”Walk” (περιπατέω)
Ephesians 2:2 (old walk, death) → 2:10 (new walk, good works) → 4:1 (walk worthy of the calling) → 4:17 (no longer walk as the Gentiles) → 5:2 (walk in love) → 5:8 (walk as children of light) → 5:15 (walk in wisdom). A single Vietnamese rendering root (ăn ở / bước đi) must be tracked across all seven occurrences as one deliberate literary thread.
”In Christ” / “In him”
Occurs in every chapter (1:1,3,4,6,7,9,10,11,12,13,15,20; 2:6,7,10,13,21,22; 3:6,11,12,21; 4:1,17,21,32; 5:8; 6:1,10,21) — the single most frequent theological anchor phrase in the letter. Every occurrence should retain visible “in Christ/in him” wording in Vietnamese rather than being absorbed into surrounding grammar, to preserve the phrase’s function as a structural refrain.
”Fullness” (πλήρωμα / πληρόω)
1:23 (church as Christ’s fullness) → 3:19 (filled with all the fullness of God) → 4:13 (mature manhood, fullness of Christ) → 5:18 (filled with the Spirit). Tracked in 08_core_glossary.md as sự đầy dẫy; never viên mãn.
”Mystery” (μυστήριον)
1:9 → 3:3,4,6,9 → 5:32 → 6:19. Tracked as sự mầu nhiệm across the whole book and harmonized with Romans 11:25/16:25-27.
Section 6: Theological Synthesis Note for the Vietnamese Context
Ephesians completes and extends the Romans Language Package’s doctrinal foundation in three specific directions that carry the highest translation stakes for Vietnamese readers:
- It corporatizes doctrines Romans treats more individually (salvation, adoption, resurrection-life) into a full ecclesiology (body, temple, household of God) — requiring careful distinction from Vietnamese religious institutions (folk temples, ancestral halls, spirit-hierarchies).
- It cosmicizes the gospel by placing it explicitly against a backdrop of real spiritual powers “in the heavenly places” — the curriculum’s single largest new syncretism-risk zone relative to Vietnamese folk spirit-practice.
- It domesticates the gospel by applying it directly to marriage, parenting, and household economic relationships — the curriculum’s most culturally delicate zone, where the text’s teaching both affirms and reframes deeply held Vietnamese family and filial values.
All three extensions must be translated with full awareness of, and explicit continuity with, the Romans baseline’s established vocabulary and risk conventions, while introducing the additional Critical- and High-risk terms catalogued in 08_core_glossary.md and cross-referenced in 09_cross_reference_analysis.md.
This document, together with 09_cross_reference_analysis.md, completes PRD Phase 1 Step 3 for the Ephesians curriculum in Vietnamese.
