Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — Ephesians (English → Vietnamese)

Why it matters

Ephesians is the highest doctrinal-density, highest syncretism-risk curriculum this Language Package has processed to date. Its core passage (2:1-10) restates Romans’ grace-through-faith thesis with an even sharper works-exclusion antithesis (2:9), while five of its six chapters introduce entirely new vocabulary — predestination, the church as Christ’s body/fullness, the mystery of Christ, spiritual warfare and the armor of God, and Christ-centered household codes — that collide directly with three live, actively-practiced Vietnamese religious systems: Mahayana Buddhist merit/rebirth cosmology, Confucian family hierarchy, and folk ancestor-veneration/spirit-mediumship practice. Getting this Language Package right determines whether Vietnamese learners receive Ephesians’ teaching on grace, spiritual power, and family as Scripture intends, or unintentionally reabsorb it into familiar merit-based, fatalistic, or ritual-appeasement frameworks.

Key findings

  • 123 total terms now govern Ephesians translation: 37 inherited exactly from the Romans baseline (translation_memory.json) and 86 new terms introduced by this book, none of which were needed for Romans.
  • 17 Critical-risk terms and 47 High-risk terms — 64 of 123 terms (52%) require mandatory human theologian review per the escalation rules, compared to a Critical+High count of 19 in the Romans baseline.
  • 36 total doctrines mapped across all six chapters (doctrine_risk_registry.json): 9 Critical, 22 High, 4 Medium, 1 Low31 of 36 doctrines (86%) require human theologian review, versus 4 requiring native speaker review and 1 automated-only.
  • Every chapter of Ephesians was confirmed to carry load-bearing new theological vocabulary; no chapter was found to contribute zero new terms — a notably higher new-vocabulary burden than the Romans baseline anticipated for a single-book extension.
  • Four collision clusters account for the majority of Critical/High risk: (1) Eph 2:1-10’s grace-vs-works antithesis, (2) Eph 6:10-20’s spiritual-warfare/armor-of-God material colliding with Vietnam’s active spirit-hierarchy and protective-amulet practice, (3) Eph 5:21-6:9’s household codes colliding with Confucian tam cương/tòng phu/đạo hiếu, and (4) Eph 5:1-2 and 5:18’s sacrificial-offering and Spirit-filling imagery colliding respectively with ancestor incense/food offerings and spirit-mediumship trance (hầu đồng/lên đồng).

Risks

  • Highest-severity risk: rendering “filled with the Holy Spirit” (5:18) or the armor-of-God/principalities-and-powers material (1:21; 2:2; 3:10; 6:10-20) without mandatory fencing notes could cause readers to model biblical Spirit-filling on spirit-possession trance, or biblical spiritual warfare on folk exorcism, mediumship, or protective amulets — the two most viscerally live cultural collision points identified in this analysis.
  • Second-highest risk: a careless single-word rendering of “works” (ἔργα) across Eph 2:9 and 2:10 could silently reintroduce Buddhist công đức or Confucian đức hạnh as salvation’s basis rather than its fruit — the exact inversion of the core passage’s argument.
  • Ancestor-practice collision risk: “inheritance” (cơ nghiệp), “sealed by the Spirit” (được đóng dấu), and “offering and sacrifice” (5:2) all sit adjacent to emotionally significant, actively practiced Vietnamese ancestor-veneration concepts (hương hỏa, bùa, đốt nhang/cúng lễ vật); under-fencing any of these risks the deepest kind of pastoral and doctrinal confusion.
  • Household-codes risk: isolating Eph 5:22-24 (wives submit) from 5:21 and 5:25-33 in any teaching material would align the text with unconditional Confucian tam cương/tòng phu subordination rather than its actual Christ-qualified, mutual, correlatively-weighted structure.
  • Predestination risk: Vietnamese folk fatalism (số phận, số mệnh, định mệnh, nghiệp) is unusually rich and ready-to-hand vocabulary that could quietly convert Paul’s personal, response-compatible sovereignty (1:5,11 read with 1:13) into an impersonal deterministic mechanism.

Opportunities

  • Ephesians’ household-of-God, honor-your-father-and-mother, and children-obey-parents material offers genuine positive overlap with Vietnamese family values (hiếu) — a rare case in this curriculum where the translation task is anchoring rather than fencing, and can be taught as affirming rather than displacing Vietnamese family devotion.
  • The Spirit’s grieving (4:30) and Spirit’s filling (5:18) passages offer a strong positive apologetic opportunity: both directly evidence the Holy Spirit’s personhood, reinforcing the Romans baseline’s Critical caution against the impersonal folk category thần linh with the book’s own internal argument.
  • The mystery-of-Christ material (1:9; 3:1-13; 5:32; 6:19) offers an opportunity to positively contrast the gospel’s openly-proclaimed-to-everyone structure against Vietnamese folk religion’s esoteric, initiate-only huyền bí knowledge — a distinctive that can be taught as good news about how truth is known, not only defended against as a collision risk.
  1. Load assets/translation_memory.json (Ephesians version, 123 terms) and analysis/12_ai_translation_requirements.md into every Phase 2 translation session before processing any Ephesians segment; do not rely on the Romans-only baseline files for this curriculum.
  2. Prioritize Phase 2 back-translation review capacity toward the four collision clusters identified above (Spirit-filling/armor-of-God/powers, works-exclusion, household codes, ancestor-offering imagery) ahead of lower-risk chapters, per the ranked list in 06_linguistic_gap_analysis.md §5.
  3. Staff theologian review capacity for 31 of 36 doctrines, a substantially higher proportion than Romans’ 19-of-27 equivalent; native-speaker-only review capacity can remain proportionally smaller (4 doctrines).
  4. Attach the mandatory fencing notes specified in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md at every occurrence (not merely first use per lesson) for the highest-risk terms: sự mầu nhiệm, sự định trước, các nơi trên trời, cơ nghiệp, được đóng dấu, khí giới của Đức Chúa Trời, lễ vật và của lễ có mùi thơm, and được đầy dẫy Đức Thánh Linh.
  5. Brief human theologian reviewers explicitly on the household-codes pairing rule (5:22-24 must never be excerpted without 5:21 and 5:25-33) before Phase 2 review of Ephesians 5 begins.
