Executive Summary
01 Executive Summary — 2 Timothy Language Package (Vietnamese)
Why it matters
2 Timothy hands Timothy — and this curriculum’s Vietnamese readers — the sufficiency of Scripture, a charge to preach, and a warning about apostasy, precisely as Paul faces death. Translated carelessly into Vietnamese, this book’s core claims collide harder with the dominant Buddhist/Confucian/ancestor-veneration religious landscape than almost any other NT book already handled in this pipeline: a “God-breathed” text sits one syllable away from a Buddhist sutra (kinh); a “crown of reward” sits one concept away from accumulated merit (công đức); “suffering endured” sits one instinct away from karmic debt (nghiệp). Getting this Language Package right is what keeps 2 Timothy’s distinctive doctrines from being quietly re-absorbed into the surrounding worldview during translation.
Key findings
- Full-book coverage complete. All 4 chapters of 2 Timothy analyzed verse-by-verse (core passage 3:14–4:5) and chapter-by-chapter (remainder); no chapter contributes zero load-bearing vocabulary.
- 22 doctrines documented, extending the baseline Romans set without contradiction: 4 Critical, 13 High, 5 Medium, 0 Low — 17 of 22 doctrines require mandatory human theologian review, a materially higher theologian-review burden than the Romans baseline’s proportion.
- ~91 terms locked in
translation_memory.json: 25 inherited exactly from the Romans baseline (gospel, grace, salvation, resurrection, Holy Spirit, etc.) plus ~66 new terms specific to 2 Timothy. Of the new terms, 8 are Critical and 27 are High risk per the core glossary — meaning roughly 35 of ~91 total terms (Critical+High combined) require theologian sign-off before Phase 2 translation may proceed. - Highest-stakes single passage: 2 Timothy 3:16–4:2, carrying Inspiration/Sufficiency of Scripture (Critical), the Charge to Preach (High), Eschatological Judgment (High), and the Second Coming (High) simultaneously — no segment in this span may clear review by native-speaker or automated tiers alone.
Risks
- Đạo lành / “sound doctrine” risks being heard as “a good religion” among several (đạo Phật, đạo Ông Bà) if left unmodified — a Vietnamese-specific ambiguity absent from the Romans baseline.
- Crown of righteousness / mão triều thiên is the single highest syncretism risk in the letter: unless every occurrence is grace-anchored, it will be heard as a Christianized công đức (proportional merit reward), inverting 2:13’s actual logic.
- The 2:18 resurrection-denial heresy must be flagged as false teaching in every occurrence; because Vietnamese popular cosmology (rebirth, ongoing ancestor-spirit presence) already pictures continued existence without bodily resurrection, an unflagged rendering could read as the more culturally intuitive position.
- 2:12–13’s denial/faithfulness couplet is doctrinally the most delicate single statement in the curriculum — it must hold together a real warning and an unconditional assurance without either collapsing into the other.
- Suffering language (“chịu khổ”) left ungoverned by an explicit Christ-directed cause defaults toward either Buddhist dukkha-transcendence or karmic-debt explanatory frameworks already dominant in everyday Vietnamese speech about hardship.
Opportunities
- Vietnam’s century-old, well-established Protestant Bible vocabulary (Đức Chúa Trời, sự cứu rỗi, sự sống lại, Đức Thánh Linh) already carries almost all of the Critical-risk baseline terms this letter reuses — no vocabulary invention needed there, only disciplined enforcement.
- The culturally familiar mechanism of guarded teacher-to-disciple transmission (Confucian sage-lineage, Buddhist teacher-disciple lineage) gives “điều đã được giao thác” and “giao lại” (the deposit / hand on) an intuitive on-ramp — the content (a fixed, externally revealed apostolic deposit, not self-cultivated insight) is the only piece requiring active reframing.
- The athletic/military crown-and-race imagery (4:7–8) already has an established, well-loved Vietnamese Protestant idiom (“đánh trận tốt lành”) ready to carry the Assurance of Reward doctrine without new coinage.
Recommended actions
- Lock
assets/translation_memory.json(91 terms) and route all 8 Critical + 27 High new terms through theologian sign-off before Phase 2 begins. - Confirm the Jannes-and-Jambres proper-name transliteration (flagged discrepancy between draft analyses) against the authoritative Bản Dịch Truyền Thống text of 2 Timothy 3:8 before locking chapter 4 proper names.
- Enforce the mandatory teaching-note triggers on every Critical/High occurrence per
analysis/12_ai_translation_requirements.md— especially θεόπνευστος (3:16), the crown of righteousness (4:8), the 2:18 heresy marker, and the 2:12–13 couplet. - Route the core passage (3:14–4:5) exclusively through human theologian review in Phase 2 Step 17; no automated or native-speaker-only approval permitted for this span.
- Brief native-speaker reviewers specifically on the “đạo lành” bare-noun risk and the “chịu khổ” ungoverned-clause risk — both are Vietnamese-specific ambiguities not present in the Romans baseline and are easy to miss without explicit briefing.
