Cross-Reference Analysis
09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — 1 John (Full Book)
Destination Language: Vietnamese
Methodology Note
1 John contains almost no formal, introduced Old Testament quotations (unlike Romans, which quotes the LXX extensively). Its scriptural connective tissue is instead built from allusion, typology, and shared theological vocabulary — much of it shared with the Gospel of John (same author, same Logos/light/love/life/world/abide vocabulary) and with Pauline theology already fixed in the Romans baseline (grace, righteousness, sonship, assurance, universal scope, Holy Spirit witness). This analysis therefore documents:
- Every explicit OT reference/allusion in 1 John, chapter by chapter (full-book coverage).
- Messianic references and their OT grounding.
- Typological patterns (persons, rites, objects that prefigure or illuminate NT realities).
- Parallels to Romans, the other Vietnamese-language curriculum sharing this translation memory, with rendering-consistency rules so that shared terms and quotations are never translated two different ways across curricula.
Every chapter of 1 John (1-5) is represented below. Where a chapter contains comparatively few independent OT connections, this is noted explicitly rather than omitted.
PART A — CROSS-REFERENCE MATRIX (Chapter by Chapter)
Chapter 1 — The Word of Life; Light and Darkness; Confession and Cleansing
| Passage | Theme | Related Character/Figure | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 John 1:1-2 | The Word of Life; eyewitness incarnation testimony | Christ (the Logos); the apostolic eyewitnesses | Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning”); John 1:1-14; cf. Romans 1:3 (seed of David / incarnation doctrine) | Critical — must use “Ngôi Lời” consistently with any future John’s Gospel curriculum and with the baseline’s incarnation term (Ngôi Lời trở nên xác thịt) |
| 1 John 1:5 | God is Light | God the Father | Genesis 1:3-4 (light spoken into being); Isaiah 9:2; Psalm 27:1; John 1:5, 8:12 | High — see 07/08 analysis; essential-nature statement, not created light |
| 1 John 1:6-7 | Walking in light vs. darkness; fellowship | Believers | Isaiah 2:5; Ephesians 5:8-11 (walking as children of light) | Medium |
| 1 John 1:7 | Blood of Jesus cleanses | Christ | Leviticus 17:11 (blood = life, atonement); Exodus 12:13 (Passover blood); Hebrews 9:22 | High — see “huyết” entry, glossary 08; once-for-all, not repeatable ritual sacrifice |
| 1 John 1:8-9 | Confession and forgiveness | Believers, before God | Psalm 32:5; Psalm 51:1-4; Proverbs 28:13 | High — direct, unmediated confession to God; guard against Catholic-sacrament framing (see “xưng tội,” glossary 08) |
| 1 John 1:9b | God “faithful and just” to forgive | God’s character | Exodus 34:6-7 (God’s covenant faithfulness); Deuteronomy 7:9; Romans 3:25-26 (God’s justice satisfied in Christ) | Critical — links directly to propitiation doctrine (2:2, 4:10) and to Romans’ justification vocabulary; forgiveness grounded in God’s own righteous character, not in ritual performance |
| 1 John 1:10 | Universal sinfulness if one denies sin | All humanity | Romans 3:23 (“all have sinned”); 1 Kings 8:46; Ecclesiastes 7:20 | High — parallels Romans’ “Universal Human Accountability” doctrine; must not be softened |
Chapter 2 — Advocate; Commandments; the World; Antichrist; Anointing
| Passage | Theme | Related Character/Figure | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 John 2:1 | Christ as Advocate before the Father | Christ, the Father | Job 16:19-21 (heavenly witness/advocate imagery); Romans 8:34 (“Christ…who intercedes for us”); Hebrews 7:25 | Critical — same doctrine as baseline “intercession” (sự cầu thay / Đấng cầu thay); never modeled on cầu xin tổ tiên |
| 1 John 2:2 | Propitiation for the whole world | Christ | Leviticus 16 (Day of Atonement); Isaiah 53:5-6, 10-12; Romans 3:25 (hilastērion); John 3:16 | Critical — “của lễ chuộc tội” must be applied consistently to Romans 3:25’s atonement language if/when that passage is retranslated under this Language Package (see Rendering-Consistency Rules, Part D) |
| 1 John 2:3-6 | Keeping commandments as evidence of knowing God | Believers | Deuteronomy 6:5-6; Psalm 119 (keeping God’s word); John 14:15 | Medium |
| 1 John 2:7-8 | Old commandment / new commandment (love) | Believers | Leviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor”); Deuteronomy 6:5; John 13:34-35 | Medium-High — feeds directly into 4:7-21 core passage; ensure “điều răn” rendering is identical here and in ch. 4 |
| 1 John 2:9-11 | Hating a brother = walking in darkness | Believers | Leviticus 19:17-18; anticipates Cain/Abel typology (3:11-12) | High — anticipates the “brother” (anh em) doctrine fully developed in 3:10-17 and 4:20-21 |
| 1 John 2:12-14 | Sins forgiven; overcoming the evil one | Believers (“children,” “young men,” “fathers”) | Psalm 103:3 (forgiveness); anticipates “overcome” (νικάω) theme fully developed in ch. 5 | Medium |
| 1 John 2:15-17 | Do not love the world | Believers vs. “the world” | Genesis 3:6 (Eve’s threefold temptation pattern — desire of the eyes, appetite, pride — a recognized OT antecedent to 2:16’s triad); Matthew 4:1-10 (Christ’s temptation, same threefold pattern); Romans 12:2 (“do not be conformed to this world”) | Medium-High — parallels Romans’ contrast between this age and renewed mind; “thế gian” ambiguity noted in glossary 08 |
| 1 John 2:18-19 | Antichrist(s); the last hour | False teachers | Daniel 7:8,25 (the little horn who speaks against the Most High); 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 (the man of lawlessness); Matthew 24:5,24 (false messiahs) | Critical — see glossary 08 “antichrist”; doctrinal denial of Christ’s identity, not a generic evil-spirit figure |
| 1 John 2:20-21,27 | Anointing from the Holy One | Believers (all, not an elite) | Exodus 30:30 (priestly anointing); Isaiah 61:1 (Spirit’s anointing on the Servant); Joel 2:28 / Acts 2:17 (Spirit poured on all flesh) | High — universal Spirit-given teaching presence, not a special-class marker; distinguish from folk medium-anointing ritual |
| 1 John 2:22-23 | Denial that Jesus is the Christ = antichrist; denying the Son denies the Father | False teachers | Psalm 2:2,7 (the LORD’s Anointed / “You are my Son”); 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic covenant); parallels Romans 1:3-4 (seed of David, declared Son of God) | Critical — direct doctrinal parallel to Romans’ “Messianic Promise” and “Sonship of Christ” doctrines; must use identical Đấng Christ / Con Đức Chúa Trời vocabulary |
| 1 John 2:28-29 | Confidence at Christ’s coming; born of him, practices righteousness | Believers | Malachi 3:1-2 (the Lord’s sudden coming); Romans 8:19 (creation awaiting revealing of God’s children) | Medium |
Chapter 3 — Children of God; Cain and Abel; Love in Deed and Truth
| Passage | Theme | Related Character/Figure | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 John 3:1-2 | Children of God; future glorification | Believers, the Father | Hosea 1:10 (“sons of the living God”); John 1:12; Romans 8:16-17,19-21 (children and heirs, glory to be revealed) | High — must be taught alongside, not confused with, baseline adoption doctrine (sự làm con nuôi); see glossary 08 |
| 1 John 3:3-6 | Purification; Christ sinless; sin as lawlessness | Christ, believers | Leviticus 11:44-45 (“be holy, for I am holy”); Habakkuk 1:13 (God cannot look on evil) | Medium |
| 1 John 3:8 | The devil sins from the beginning | The devil (diabolos) | Genesis 3:1-15 (the serpent in Eden); John 8:44 (“you are of your father the devil”) | Medium — singular personal adversary, not folk spirit taxonomy |
| 1 John 3:9 | Seed of God abiding in the believer | Believers | Genesis 3:15 (seed of the woman — distinct sense, note contrast below); 1 Peter 1:23 (“born again…through the living and abiding word of God”) | Medium — must be distinguished from baseline “seed of David” (dòng dõi Đa-vít, physical lineage); this is spiritual generative nature, not bloodline |
| 1 John 3:10 | Children of God vs. children of the devil, tested by love of brother | Believers vs. unbelievers | Directly resumes Genesis 4 typology developed in the next two verses | High |
| 1 John 3:11-12 | Explicit OT reference: Cain and Abel | Cain, Abel | Genesis 4:1-12 (direct narrative reference — the one explicit named OT allusion in 1 John); Hebrews 11:4; Hebrews 12:24; Jude 1:11; Matthew 23:35 | Critical — this is the letter’s single explicit OT figure-reference; must render “Cain” using the established Vietnamese Bible proper-name form (Ca-in) and preserve the force of the comparison: hating a brother is spiritually continuous with the first murder, not merely “unkind behavior” |
| 1 John 3:13-15 | The world’s hatred; murder in the heart | Believers vs. the world | Genesis 4:5-8 (Cain’s hatred preceding murder); Matthew 5:21-22 (Christ’s escalation of the murder command to include hatred) | High |

| 1 John 3:19-24 | Confidence before God; keeping commandments; the Spirit given | Believers | Psalm 139 (God knows the heart); Romans 8:16 (the Spirit bears witness) | Medium-High — anticipates the Spirit-testimony theme of 5:6-10 |
Chapter 4:1-6 — Testing the Spirits
| Passage | Theme | Related Character/Figure | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 John 4:1 | Test the spirits | Believers (as discerners), false prophets | Deuteronomy 13:1-3 (testing a prophet’s message against known truth even if signs occur); Deuteronomy 18:20-22 (a prophet’s word tested by fulfillment/faithfulness to the LORD); Matthew 7:15-20 (“by their fruit”); 1 Corinthians 12:3; 1 Thessalonians 5:21 | Critical — see glossary 08; sharp collision risk with Vietnamese spirit-mediumship practice (gọi hồn, cầu cơ, hầu đồng); flag every occurrence for human theologian review |
| 1 John 4:2-3 | Confessing Jesus Christ come in the flesh; spirit of antichrist | Christ (incarnate); false teachers | Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 9:6; Micah 5:2; parallels Romans 1:3 (incarnation, “according to the flesh”) | Critical — same doctrine as baseline incarnation; the confession standard for distinguishing true from false spirits |
| 1 John 4:4-6 | Believers have overcome; spirit of truth/error; “he who is in you is greater” | Believers, the Holy Spirit | 2 Kings 6:16 (“those who are with us are more than those who are with them” — thematic parallel of divine superiority over opposing spiritual forces); anticipates ch. 5’s “overcome” (νικάω) theme | High |
Chapter 4:7-21 — Core Passage (see 07 Semantic Analysis for full verse-by-verse treatment)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character/Figure | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 John 4:7-8 | God is Love; new birth and knowing God tied to loving | God, believers | Exodus 34:6-7 (“merciful and gracious…abounding in steadfast love”); Deuteronomy 7:7-8 (God’s love as the ground of election, not merit) | Critical — essential-nature statement; see 07 analysis |
| 1 John 4:9-10 | Only Son sent; propitiation | The Father, the Son | Genesis 22:2,12,16 (“your son, your only son…you have not withheld him from me” — Isaac typology of the beloved/only son given); John 3:16; Romans 8:32 (“did not withhold his own Son”) | Critical — Isaac/Abraham typology directly illuminates monogenēs (Con một); must be flagged for theologian teaching notes; propitiation cross-references 2:2 (see above) |
| 1 John 4:11 | Debt/obligation to love one another | Believers | Leviticus 19:18; Romans 13:8 (“owe no one anything, except to love one another” — same ὀφείλω/debt-language root) | High — direct Romans parallel; rendering-consistency rule required (see Part D) |
| 1 John 4:12-16 | No one has seen God; mutual abiding; Spirit given; confession of the Son | God, the Holy Spirit, believers | Exodus 33:20 (“no one may see me and live”); John 1:18; Romans 8:9-11 (the Spirit’s indwelling as evidence of belonging to Christ) | High — abiding (μένω) theme; Spirit-indwelling parallel to Romans 8 |
| 1 John 4:15 | Confessing “Jesus is the Son of God” | Believers | Parallels Romans 10:9-10 (“if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord…”) — the letter’s counterpart salvation-confession | Critical — must receive the same verbatim cross-document consistency treatment the baseline requires for Romans 10:9-10 (see Part D rendering-consistency rules) |
| 1 John 4:17-18 | Confidence at the day of judgment; perfect love casts out fear | Believers | Isaiah 41:10 (“fear not, for I am with you”); Romans 8:1,15 (“no condemnation”; “not a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear”) | High — direct thematic parallel to Romans 8’s assurance doctrine; consistency in “sự dạn dĩ” and contrast with servile fear |
| 1 John 4:19 | God loved us first | God, believers | Deuteronomy 7:7-8; Romans 5:8 (“God shows his love for us in that…Christ died for us”) | High — parallels Romans’ grace-precedes-response doctrine |
| 1 John 4:20-21 | Loving God while hating a brother is a lie; the commandment | Believers | Resumes Genesis 4 (Cain/Abel) typology from 3:11-12; Matthew 22:37-39 (the two great commandments); Romans 13:8-10 (love fulfills the law) | Critical — ties together the letter’s central ethical-doctrinal test; must retain full force of ψεύστης (“liar”) without softening |
Chapter 5 — New Birth and Faith; Overcoming the World; Three Witnesses; Eternal Life; Idols
| Passage | Theme | Related Character/Figure | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 John 5:1-3 | Born of God through faith; loving God’s children; commandments not burdensome | Believers | Deuteronomy 30:11 (“this commandment…is not too hard for you”); Romans 8:14-16 (Spirit-led children of God) | Medium-High |
| 1 John 5:4-5 | Overcoming the world through faith | Believers | Genesis 3:15 (the protoevangelium — ultimate victory over the serpent/world-system, distant background); John 16:33 (“I have overcome the world”); Romans 8:37 (“more than conquerors”) | High — parallels Romans’ Assurance of Salvation doctrine (“more than conquerors” = same victory theme as νικάω here) |
| 1 John 5:6-8 | The Spirit, the water, and the blood — three witnesses | The Holy Spirit; Christ | Deuteronomy 19:15 (two or three witnesses establish a matter); John 19:34 (blood and water flowing from Christ’s side at the cross); Exodus 12 (Passover blood); Numbers 19 (purifying water) | High — must preserve the historical, Christ-identity-testifying function; not primarily a later sacramental reference |
| 1 John 5:9-12 | God’s testimony concerning the Son; whoever has the Son has life | God, believers | Psalm 19:7 (God’s testimony/law is sure); John 5:24; Romans 6:23 (“the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus”) | High — direct Romans parallel; consistency required for “sự sống đời đời” |
| 1 John 5:13 | Assurance: written so you may know you have eternal life | Believers | Parallels Romans 8:16 (“the Spirit himself testifies…that we are children of God”) and Romans 8:38-39 (nothing can separate) | Critical — this verse is the letter’s own assurance-of-salvation thesis statement, parallel in weight to Romans 8:38-39; recommend identical cross-document consistency treatment |
| 1 John 5:14-15 | Confidence in prayer | Believers | Jeremiah 33:3 (“call to me and I will answer you”); Romans 8:26-27 (the Spirit’s intercession undergirding believers’ prayer) | Medium |
| 1 John 5:16-17 | Sin unto death; praying for a sinning brother | Believers | Numbers 15:30-31 (deliberate/defiant sin vs. unintentional sin under the Law); Hebrews 6:4-6, 10:26 (deliberate apostasy) | Medium — genuinely debated phrase; flag for theologian review; do not over-specify |
| 1 John 5:18-19 | Born of God does not keep on sinning; the whole world lies in the evil one | Believers vs. the world | Genesis 3 (the fall, background to “the evil one’s” dominion); Romans 5:12 (sin’s entrance and reign through Adam, contrasting reign) | Medium |
| 1 John 5:20 | The Son of God has come to give understanding; he is the true God and eternal life | Christ | Jeremiah 24:7 (“I will give them a heart to know me”); John 17:3 (“this is eternal life, that they know you”) | Critical — a direct predication of Christ’s full deity (“he is the true God”), parallel to the baseline’s Deity of Christ doctrine (Romans 9:5) |
| 1 John 5:21 | Keep yourselves from idols | Believers | Exodus 20:3-4; Deuteronomy 5:7-8; 1 Corinthians 10:14; Acts 15:20,29 (idols named explicitly in instructions to Gentile believers) | Critical — see glossary 08; application to Vietnamese ancestor-altar practice (bàn thờ gia tiên) is a pastoral question requiring human theologian input, not a lexical translation decision; flag every occurrence |
PART B — MESSIANIC REFERENCES SUMMARY
| Reference in 1 John | OT Messianic Root | Fulfillment Claim | Romans Parallel | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 John 2:22; 4:2; 5:1 — “Jesus is the Christ” | Psalm 2:2,7; 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic covenant); Isaiah 9:6-7 | Denial of this claim is the defining mark of antichrist; affirmation is the ground of new birth and fellowship with God | Romans 1:3-4 (seed of David, declared Son of God); Romans 9:5; baseline doctrine “Messianic Promise” | Critical |
| 1 John 4:2 — “Jesus Christ has come in the flesh” | Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 9:6; Micah 5:2 | Real, historical incarnation, not appearance/phantom (proto-docetism denied) | Romans 1:3; baseline doctrine “Incarnation” | Critical |
| 1 John 4:9,14 — the Son “sent,” “Savior of the world” | Genesis 12:3 (all nations blessed); Isaiah 49:6 (light to the nations) | Universal scope of the Messiah’s saving mission | Romans 1:16; Romans 3:29-30; Romans 10:12-13; baseline doctrine “Universal Scope of the Gospel” | Critical |
| 1 John 5:20 — “he is the true God and eternal life” | Isaiah 44:6; Jeremiah 10:10 (the true, living God contrasted with idols) | Full, explicit predication of Christ’s deity | Romans 9:5 (“Christ, who is God over all”); baseline doctrine “Deity of Christ” | Critical |
PART C — TYPOLOGICAL CONNECTIONS
| Type (OT) | Antitype (1 John) | Connecting Passages | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cain’s murder of Abel (Genesis 4:1-12) | Hatred of a brother as spiritual murder; the believer’s love as the reversal of Cain’s pattern | 1 John 3:11-15; 4:20-21; cf. Hebrews 12:24 (Abel’s blood vs. the blood of Christ, “which speaks a better word”) | Critical — the letter’s one explicit named OT figure; must not be flattened to a generic morality illustration |
| Isaac, Abraham’s “only son,” offered and not withheld (Genesis 22:2,12,16) | God’s “only Son” (μονογενής) sent and given for the world | 1 John 4:9-10; cf. Romans 8:32; John 3:16 | Critical — illuminates “Con một”; recommend a teaching note connecting the two “only son” passages |
| Passover lamb’s blood applied for deliverance (Exodus 12:1-13) | The blood of Jesus that cleanses from sin | 1 John 1:7; 5:6-8; cf. 1 Corinthians 5:7; John 1:29 | High — once-for-all, not a repeated ritual; see “huyết” glossary entry |
| Day of Atonement sacrifice, sins covered by substitute (Leviticus 16) | Christ as hilasmos, the propitiation for sin | 1 John 2:2; 4:10; cf. Romans 3:25; Hebrews 9:11-14 | Critical — same rendering (“của lễ chuộc tội”) must be used at every occurrence across both curricula |
| The serpent’s deception and the woman’s seed promise (Genesis 3:1-15) | The devil’s ongoing opposition; the believer’s decisive victory “in Christ” | 1 John 3:8; 5:4-5,19; cf. Romans 16:20 (“God will soon crush Satan under your feet”) | Medium-High — victory theme (νικάω) grounded in Christ’s finished work, not human effort |
| Priestly and prophetic anointing with oil (Exodus 30:30; 1 Samuel 16:13; Isaiah 61:1) | The Spirit’s anointing given to every believer | 1 John 2:20,27; cf. Joel 2:28; Acts 2:17 | High — universal, not elite-class; see glossary 08 |
| Multiple witnesses required to establish a legal matter (Deuteronomy 19:15) | The Spirit, water, and blood as converging testimony to Christ’s identity | 1 John 5:6-8 | High — legal/testimonial force must be retained, not reduced to symbolism alone |
PART D — PARALLELS TO ROMANS AND RENDERING-CONSISTENCY RULES
Because Romans and 1 John share the same Vietnamese translation memory, the following shared doctrines/vocabulary items MUST be rendered identically across both curricula. Any deviation must be flagged for human theologian review before being accepted.
| Shared Doctrine/Term | Romans Passage | 1 John Passage | Vietnamese Rendering (fixed) | Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salvation confession | Romans 10:9-10 (“Jesus is Lord”) | 1 John 4:15; 5:1 (“Jesus is the Son of God” / “Jesus is the Christ”) | Đức Chúa Giê-xu là Chúa (Rom 10:9); Đức Chúa Giê-xu là Con Đức Chúa Trời (1 John 4:15) | Both confessions are salvation-defining and Critical-tier; render each exactly and consistently every time it recurs; do not blend the two titles into one confession |
| Propitiation/atonement | Romans 3:25 (hilastērion, no fixed baseline term recorded — flagged only as an escalation trigger) | 1 John 2:2; 4:10 (hilasmos) | của lễ chuộc tội | ESTABLISH: this 1 John rendering should be adopted retroactively for Romans 3:25 if/when that verse is processed under this Language Package, so the same Greek word-family is never rendered two different ways across curricula |
| Grace/love precedes human response | Romans 5:8; 11:5-6 (grace not by works) | 1 John 4:10,19 (God loved us first) | ân điển (grace, Romans); sự yêu thương (love, 1 John) — kept as distinct terms, but both must carry the “God-initiated, unearned, non-reciprocal-debt” doctrinal shape | Do not let 1 John’s ὀφείλομεν (“we ought,” 4:11) drift into ơn nghĩa (reciprocal debt) any more than Romans’ grace may |
| Sonship/children of God | Romans 8:14-17,29 (adoption, huiothesia — legal/inheritance emphasis) | 1 John 3:1-2,9-10 (tekna theou, born of God — organic/new-birth emphasis) | sự làm con nuôi (Romans) / con cái Đức Chúa Trời (1 John) | Teach both together as complementary, non-contradictory truths about the same reality; do not collapse one into the other |
| Assurance of salvation | Romans 8:1,28-39 | 1 John 5:11-13; 4:17-18 | sự dạn dĩ (confidence); no condemnation language consistent with Romans 8:1 | Both passages are the respective letters’ assurance-thesis statements; apply identical Critical-tier review routing |
| Holy Spirit as witness | Romans 8:16 (“the Spirit himself testifies”) | 1 John 5:6-10 (the Spirit as witness); 3:24; 4:13 | Đức Thánh Linh | Never bare “thần linh”; the Spirit’s testimony function must read identically in both letters |
| Deity of Christ | Romans 9:5 (“Christ, who is God over all”) | 1 John 5:20 (“he is the true God”) | Đức Chúa Giê-xu (proper name retained); deity predicated explicitly, never softened | Critical-tier; both verses require identical theologian-review routing |
| Universal scope of salvation | Romans 1:16; 3:29-30; 10:12-13 | 1 John 2:2; 4:14 (“Savior of the world”) | dân ngoại / thế gian used per baseline; Cứu Chúa (Savior) | Universal (“whole world,” “no distinction”) language must never be narrowed to an ethnic, ancestral, or lineage-based group in either letter |
| Love as God’s own nature/action, contrasted with merit | Romans 5:5,8; 11:5-6 | 1 John 4:7-19 | sự yêu thương / ân điển kept distinct but both anchored as God-originated and non-merit-based | Reinforce in teaching notes that “sự yêu thương” (1 John) and “ân điển” (Romans) are theologically complementary but lexically distinct; do not substitute one for the other |
| Overcoming/victory | Romans 8:37 (“more than conquerors”) | 1 John 5:4-5; 4:4 | thắng / sự đắc thắng | Same victory-in-Christ theology; grounded in faith and new birth, not self-effort, in both letters |
| Law/lawlessness | Romans 2:12-15; 3:19-20 (nomos) | 1 John 3:4 (anomia) | luật pháp (law) / sự trái luật pháp (lawlessness) | 1 John’s anomia is the general moral-law sense; keep distinguishable in teaching notes from Romans’ more frequent Mosaic-Law-specific usage |
| Sin as personal transgression, not karma | Romans 1:18-3:20; 5:12-21 | 1 John 1:7-10; 3:4; 5:16-17 | tội lỗi | Identical across both letters; never nghiệp xấu |
Additional Rule — Chapter 4:7-21 Core Passage Priority
Because 1 John 4:7-21 is this curriculum’s theological anchor (parallel in function to Romans 1:16-17 and 8:28 in the baseline), its key renderings — Đức Chúa Trời là sự yêu thương (4:8,16), Con một (4:9), của lễ chuộc tội (4:10), Đức Chúa Giê-xu là Con Đức Chúa Trời (4:15), and sự dạn dĩ (4:17) — must be applied with the same verbatim, cross-document consistency the baseline requires for Romans 1:16-17, 8:28, and 10:9-10. Any future 1 John translation memory file must record these as Critical-tier, no-deviation entries.
