Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — Colossians (Koine Greek → Vietnamese)
Purpose
This document analyzes every chapter of Colossians in the original Koine Greek, first to last, to surface every load-bearing theological term for the Vietnamese (destination language) translation pipeline. The core passage, Colossians 1:15–20, receives verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing terms. Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked [REUSE] and MUST carry the identical Vietnamese rendering already established. Terms new to this curriculum are marked [NEW] and are carried forward into 08_core_glossary.md for formal registry entry.
Risk tiers (Critical / High / Medium / Low) follow the definitions fixed in the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json.
PART 1 — Core Passage: Colossians 1:15–20 (Verse-by-Verse)
This passage is the Christological anchor of the whole curriculum: the Supremacy of Christ over Creation, Christ as Head of the Church, and Reconciliation through the Cross are all concentrated here.
Colossians 1:15
Greek: ὅς ἐστιν εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἀοράτου, πρωτότοκος πάσης κτίσεως
- εἰκών (eikōn) — transliteration: eikōn. Literal meaning: “image, likeness, exact visual representation” (cf. an image stamped on a coin). Semantic range: a copy that carries the essential character of its original, not a mere resemblance. English variants: “image,” “likeness,” “exact representation.” Contextual theological meaning: Christ is the visible, exact manifestation of the invisible God — the anchor text for the Deity of Christ. Vietnamese rendering: hình ảnh (of Đức Chúa Trời). Risk: Critical. Must not be softened to a term implying mere resemblance, symbolism, or one manifestation among many (echoing the baseline’s warning against hóa thân for “incarnation”). Requires a translator note reinforcing that Christ is God’s own exact self-disclosure, not an avatar or emanation.
- ἀόρατος (aoratos) — “invisible.” Standard, low-ambiguity term: vô hình / không thấy được. Risk: Low.
- πρωτότοκος (prōtotokos) — transliteration: prōtotokos. Literal meaning: “firstborn.” Semantic range in Hellenistic usage: (1) literal birth order; (2) a title of rank, preeminence, and inheritance-right (as Israel’s firstborn tribe, or a firstborn son’s legal standing), independent of birth order. English variants: “firstborn,” “preeminent one.” Contextual theological meaning: Christ holds supreme rank and inheritance-right over all creation as its eternal Lord — NOT that he was the first created being (the ancient Arian and modern Jehovah’s Witness misreading). Vietnamese rendering recommendation: Con đầu lòng (của mọi vật dựng nên), consistent with established Vietnamese Protestant usage of “con đầu lòng” as a rank-and-inheritance title elsewhere in Scripture. Risk: Critical. This is the single highest-risk term in the core passage. Every occurrence requires a mandatory translator/theologian note clarifying that “đầu lòng” here signals supreme rank and inheritance authority OVER creation, not membership WITHIN creation as its first instance. Must be read together with v.16-17 (“in him all things were created… he is before all things”) to foreclose any subordinationist reading.
- κτίσις (ktisis) — “creation, created thing(s).” Semantic range: the totality of what has been made, or an individual created being. Vietnamese rendering: muôn vật được dựng nên / tạo vật. Risk: Medium. Must clearly denote the created order as object, distinguishing Christ (the Creator, uncreated) from κτίσις (the created).
Colossians 1:16
- κτίζω (ktizō) — “to create.” Contextual theological meaning: Christ is the active agent (“in him,” “through him,” “for him”) of the entire created order — direct evidence that he is not himself part of τὰ πάντα (“all things”) but its Creator. Vietnamese rendering: dựng nên / sáng tạo. Risk: Critical. The threefold prepositional structure (ἐν αὐτῷ / διʼ αὐτοῦ / εἰς αὐτὸν — “in him / through him / for him”) must be preserved in translation syntax; collapsing it risks losing the exhaustive scope of Christ’s creative agency.
- θρόνοι / κυριότητες / ἀρχαί / ἐξουσίαι (thronoi / kyriotētes / archai / exousiai) — “thrones / dominions / rulers / authorities.” Semantic range: ranked classes of spiritual/angelic powers in Second Temple Jewish cosmology, both good and fallen. English variants: “powers,” “principalities.” Contextual theological meaning: Christ is supreme Creator and sovereign even over every rank of spiritual power. Vietnamese rendering: các ngôi, các quyền thống trị, các kẻ cầm quyền, các thế lực. Risk: High. Vietnamese folk religion has an elaborate hierarchy of spirits (thần linh, thổ địa, thành hoàng, and other tutelary/territorial spirits). These terms must be framed as created, subordinate powers under Christ’s sovereign authority — never rendered so generically that they merge with the folk category of thần linh addressed as objects of devotion in their own right (cf. the baseline Critical warning on “holy_spirit” vs. bare thần linh).
Colossians 1:17
Greek: καὶ αὐτός ἐστιν πρὸ πάντων, καὶ τὰ πάντα ἐν αὐτῷ συνέστηκεν.
- πρὸ πάντων (pro pantōn) — “before all things.” Semantic range: temporal priority (existing before) and rank priority (supreme over). Contextual theological meaning: Christ’s eternal preexistence, prior to and independent of creation. Vietnamese rendering: có trước muôn vật. Risk: Critical. Directly supports the Deity of Christ doctrine; must not be flattened into merely “greater than” without the temporal-priority sense.
- συνίστημι (synistēmi) — “to hold together, sustain, cohere.” Semantic range: cohesion, ongoing structural sustenance (not a one-time act). Contextual theological meaning: Christ actively and continuously sustains the coherence of the universe — a doctrine of ongoing personal providence exercised by Christ himself. Vietnamese rendering: nắm giữ mọi vật / mọi vật đứng vững trong Ngài. Risk: High. Must be rendered as the personal, purposive sustaining activity of a divine Person (paralleling the baseline’s “providence” entry, sự quan phòng của Đức Chúa Trời), never as an impersonal cosmic law, fate, or the Confucian/Taoist “đạo” (an impersonal ordering principle of the universe).
Colossians 1:18
Greek: καὶ αὐτός ἐστιν ἡ κεφαλὴ τοῦ σώματος τῆς ἐκκλησίας· ὅς ἐστιν ἀρχή, πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν, ἵνα γένηται ἐν πᾶσιν αὐτὸς πρωτεύων.
- κεφαλή (kephalē) — “head.” Semantic range: literal body part; figuratively, source, authority, and origin of life for a body. Contextual theological meaning: Christ as Head of the Church doctrine — Christ is both the authoritative ruler of the Church and its life-source. Vietnamese rendering: đầu (của thân thể, là Hội Thánh). Risk: High. Must convey organic life-source together with authority — not a merely administrative “head of an organization,” and not confused with the household-code use of headship in ch. 3 (a distinct application, not identical doctrine).
- σῶμα (sōma) — “body.” Here figurative for the Church as one living organism united to its Head. Vietnamese rendering: thân thể. Risk: Medium.
- ἐκκλησία (ekklēsia) — [REUSE] established Vietnamese rendering Hội Thánh (baseline: Church as God’s People doctrine). Risk: Medium, per baseline.
- ἀρχή (archē) — “beginning, origin, first principle.” Contextual theological meaning: Christ as the source/originator (paired with the second epithet, “firstborn from the dead”). Vietnamese rendering: Đấng khởi nguyên / cội nguồn. Risk: Medium. Guard against merging with Taoist/Buddhist notions of an impersonal cosmic first-principle (đạo, bản thể); Christ is a personal originator, not a metaphysical abstraction.
- πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν (prōtotokos ek tōn nekrōn) — “firstborn from the dead.” Contextual theological meaning: ties directly to the Resurrection of Christ doctrine (baseline term [REUSE] sự sống lại). Risk: Critical. Christ’s bodily, historical, once-for-all resurrection as the guarantee and pattern of believers’ own resurrection — never rendered with any hint of luân hồi/đầu thai (cyclical rebirth), the forbidden substitution already fixed in the baseline for “resurrection.”
- πρωτεύω (prōteuō) — “to hold first place, be preeminent.” Vietnamese rendering: đứng đầu hơn hết / có địa vị cao trọng hơn hết. Risk: Medium.
Colossians 1:19
Greek: ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ εὐδόκησεν πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα κατοικῆσαι.
- πλήρωμα (plērōma) — transliteration: plērōma. Literal meaning: “fullness, that which fills up, the sum total.” Semantic range: full measure/completeness — here, of deity itself (further specified in Colossians 2:9 as πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος). English variants: “fullness,” “totality,” “full measure.” Contextual theological meaning: the entirety of God’s nature, without remainder, resides in Christ — the anchor for the Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily doctrine, and the direct answer to the false teaching Paul opposes throughout the letter (which apparently used “plērōma” language to describe a hierarchy of intermediary spiritual beings, of which Christ was allegedly only one). Vietnamese rendering: sự đầy dẫy trọn vẹn (của Đức Chúa Trời). Risk: Critical. Must never be read as a graded scale of spiritual attainment or enlightenment (cf. Buddhist concepts of progressive “fullness” of insight/merit toward giác ngộ) or as one node in a hierarchy of semi-divine beings; the entire, undivided fullness of God’s nature is in Christ alone.
- κατοικέω (katoikeō) — “to dwell, inhabit permanently, take up permanent residence.” Semantic range: settled, ongoing indwelling, contrasted with a temporary visitation. Contextual theological meaning: God’s full nature dwells in Christ permanently and essentially, not episodically. Vietnamese rendering: ở trong / ngự trong. Risk: Critical. This term carries an acute, specific cultural collision risk: Vietnamese folk religion practices spirit-mediumship (hầu đồng / lên đồng), in which a deity or spirit is understood to temporarily and episodically possess a medium’s body during a ritual trance. κατοικέω must be taught and rendered as God’s essential, permanent, and unique indwelling of Christ’s own nature — categorically different from temporary ritual possession of a human medium by a visiting spirit. This distinction requires an explicit translator/theologian note at every occurrence (also relevant at 2:9).
- εὐδοκέω (eudokeō) — “to be well pleased, to delight in, to resolve gladly.” Vietnamese rendering: vui lòng / đẹp ý. Risk: Medium. God’s sovereign, glad decision — not a reluctant concession.
Colossians 1:20
Greek: καὶ διʼ αὐτοῦ ἀποκαταλλάξαι τὰ πάντα εἰς αὐτόν, εἰρηνοποιήσας διὰ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ σταυροῦ αὐτοῦ, εἴτε τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς εἴτε τὰ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς.
- ἀποκαταλλάσσω (apokatallassō) — transliteration: apokatallassō. Literal meaning: “to reconcile completely, to restore to a former state of harmony.” An intensified compound of καταλλάσσω (“reconcile”), doubly emphasizing thoroughness. Semantic range: full, comprehensive restoration of a broken relationship, initiated by the offended party. English variants: “reconcile,” “restore to favor.” Contextual theological meaning: God himself, through Christ, unilaterally and completely restores a hostile universe to himself — the anchor for the Reconciliation through the Cross doctrine. Vietnamese rendering: sự hòa giải (trọn vẹn). Risk: Critical. Vietnamese culture has an existing and pervasive practice of ritual “hóa giải” — resolving perceived offenses against, or the displeasure of, ancestors or spirits through offerings, rites, or mediums at the family altar or temple, initiated by the living party seeking to appease the spirit. Reconciliation in Colossians 1:20 must be taught, with an explicit note at every occurrence, as the reverse direction and reverse initiative: God himself acts first, unilaterally, at his own cost (Christ’s blood), not humanity performing a ritual to appease or satisfy an offended power.
- εἰρηνοποιέω (eirēnopoieō) — “to make peace.” Built on the noun εἰρήνη, [REUSE] baseline rendering sự bình an. Vietnamese rendering: làm cho hòa thuận / lập lại sự bình an. Risk: Medium, per baseline peace_with_god doctrine — relational, covenantal peace secured by Christ’s finished work, not an inner calm cultivated by human practice.
- αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ (haima tou staurou) — “blood of the cross.” Semantic range: metonymy for Christ’s actual, historical, violent death by crucifixion; αἷμα recalls the OT sacrificial system, σταυρός names the specific, literal Roman execution instrument. English variants: “blood of the cross,” “blood shed on the cross.” Contextual theological meaning: reconciliation was achieved at a specific historical cost, Christ’s literal sacrificial death — not achieved through moral instruction, philosophical insight, or ritual technique. Vietnamese rendering: huyết của thập tự giá (Ngài). Risk: Critical. σταυρός (thập tự giá, “cross”) must remain a concrete historical execution device, and αἷμα (huyết, “blood”) must retain its sacrificial, atoning force — never abstracted into a purely symbolic “sacrifice” divorced from the literal, historical crucifixion.
PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 (remaining material: 1:1–14, 1:21–29)
(vv.15–20 fully treated above)
- ἀπόστολος (apostolos) — “apostle.” [REUSE] sứ đồ. Risk: Medium, per baseline Apostleship doctrine.
- χάρις (charis) — “grace.” [REUSE] ân điển. Risk: High, per baseline Grace doctrine (Colossians 1:2, 1:6).
- εἰρήνη (eirēnē) — “peace.” [REUSE] sự bình an. Risk: Medium, per baseline.
- εὐχαριστέω / εὐχαριστία (eucharisteō / eucharistia) — “to give thanks / thanksgiving.” [REUSE] sự cảm tạ. Risk: Low, per baseline (Colossians 1:3, 1:12).
- πίστις (pistis) — “faith.” [REUSE] đức tin. Risk: Medium, per baseline (Colossians 1:4, 1:23).
- ἀγάπη (agapē) — “love.” [NEW] Literal meaning: self-giving, committed love, distinct from erotic (ἔρως) or mere affection (φιλία). Contextual theological meaning: love for the saints flowing from faith and hope (1:4, 1:8). Vietnamese rendering: sự yêu thương / tình yêu thương. Risk: Medium. Distinguish from Confucian relational obligation (ơn nghĩa) or generalized benevolence; this is Spirit-given love (1:8, “love in the Spirit”).
- ἐλπίς (elpis) — “hope.” [NEW] Semantic range: confident expectation grounded in God’s promise, not wishful optimism. Contextual theological meaning: hope “laid up in heaven” (1:5), the object and ground of faith and love. Vietnamese rendering: sự trông cậy. Risk: Medium. Must be distinguished from a vague wish or from fatalistic acceptance (số phận), consistent with the baseline’s caution on “calling.”
- εὐαγγέλιον (euangelion) — “gospel.” [REUSE] Tin Lành. Risk: Medium, per baseline (Colossians 1:5, 1:23).
- καρποφορέω (karpophoreō) — “to bear fruit.” [NEW] Vietnamese rendering: kết quả. Risk: Low.
- ἐπίγνωσις (epignōsis) — “full knowledge, precise/thorough knowledge.” [NEW] Literal meaning: an intensified compound of γνῶσις (“knowledge”), denoting fuller, more exact knowledge. Contextual theological meaning: the true, God-given knowledge of his will (1:9-10), set in deliberate contrast to the false teachers’ claimed esoteric γνῶσις. Vietnamese rendering: sự hiểu biết đầy đủ / sự nhận biết. Risk: High. This term sits at the center of the Warning against False Teaching doctrine. It must never be rendered in a way that suggests secret, higher knowledge reserved for a spiritual elite — the very error Colossians opposes — and must be kept distinct from Buddhist giác ngộ (enlightenment attained through progressive practice/insight) or esoteric folk-occult knowledge (huyền bí, bùa chú).
- σοφία (sophia) — “wisdom.” [NEW] Vietnamese rendering: sự khôn ngoan. Risk: Medium. True, Spirit-given wisdom (1:9, 1:28), contrasted later (2:8, 2:23) with merely human philosophy.
- σύνεσις (synesis) — “understanding, insight, discernment.” [NEW] Vietnamese rendering: sự thông sáng. Risk: Low.
- δύναμις / δυναμούμενοι (dynamis / dynamoumenoi) — “power / being empowered.” [NEW] Distinct from baseline “power_of_God” (which anchors Romans 1:16 specifically); here God’s power strengthens believers for endurance (1:11) and empowers Paul’s ministry (1:29). Vietnamese rendering: quyền năng / được ban thêm sức. Risk: Medium.
- ὑπομονή / μακροθυμία (hypomonē / makrothymia) — “endurance / longsuffering.” [NEW] Vietnamese rendering: sự nhịn nhục / sự nhẫn nhục. Risk: Low.
- κλῆρος (klēros) — “inheritance, allotted portion.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: “the inheritance of the saints in light” (1:12) — believers’ guaranteed share in God’s eternal reward, resonant with (but distinct from) the baseline’s Adoption doctrine. Vietnamese rendering: phần cơ nghiệp. Risk: Medium.
- ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους (exousia tou skotous) — “the dominion/authority of darkness.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: the spiritual realm of estrangement from God from which believers have been rescued (1:13). Vietnamese rendering: quyền của sự tối tăm. Risk: High. Must be taught as a moral-spiritual condition of separation from God, not conflated with Vietnamese folk cosmology’s cõi âm / âm phủ (the underworld realm inhabited by ancestor spirits), which carries very different connotations (continuity of family relationship, not moral estrangement).
- βασιλεία τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ (basileia tou huiou tēs agapēs autou) — “the kingdom of the Son of his love.” Builds on [REUSE] Nước Đức Chúa Trời (baseline Kingdom Mission doctrine), here explicitly Christocentric. Vietnamese rendering: Nước của Con yêu dấu Ngài. Risk: Medium.
- ἀπολύτρωσις (apolytrōsis) — “redemption.” [NEW] Literal meaning: release secured by payment of a price (as for a slave or captive). Contextual theological meaning: believers’ deliverance was purchased at the cost of Christ’s blood (implied here; explicit in Ephesians/Romans parallels) — distinct from, but closely related to, the baseline’s sự cứu rỗi (salvation), which names the broader outcome. Vietnamese rendering: sự cứu chuộc. Risk: High. Must retain the “price paid” sense; never collapse into generic “rescue” without the ransom/purchase component.
- ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν (aphesis tōn hamartiōn) — “forgiveness of sins.” [NEW] Builds on [REUSE] tội lỗi (sin). Vietnamese rendering: sự tha thứ tội lỗi. Risk: Medium. A gracious act of God, never earned through merit-cancelling ritual, ancestral appeasement, or accumulated good deeds (cf. baseline’s grace vs. công đức distinction).
- μυστήριον (mystērion) — “mystery.” [NEW — but recurring throughout the letter: 1:26, 1:27, 2:2, 4:3]. Literal meaning: a formerly hidden truth, now disclosed by revelation. Semantic range in Colossians: NOT an occult secret reserved for spiritual initiates, but God’s redemptive plan — Christ himself, and specifically “Christ in you” — now openly proclaimed to all. Contextual theological meaning: this is the single most important anti-syncretism term in the letter, since the false teachers evidently traded in claims of exclusive hidden knowledge. Vietnamese rendering: sự mầu nhiệm. Risk: High. Requires a mandatory translator/theologian note at every occurrence distinguishing the biblical mystērion — a truth once hidden but now openly revealed to all believers — from esoteric or occult “hidden knowledge” traditions familiar in the Vietnamese context (huyền bí, bùa chú, and secret transmission in some folk-Buddhist and esoteric practice), and from initiate-only enlightenment teaching.
- πάθημα / θλῖψις (pathēma / thlipsis) — “suffering / affliction.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: Paul’s statement that he “fills up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions” (1:24) is a notorious translation flashpoint. Vietnamese rendering: sự khổ nạn / sự hoạn nạn. Risk: High. Must be taught with an explicit note that this does NOT mean Christ’s atoning suffering was insufficient (which would contradict the Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ doctrine at the heart of this curriculum) — Paul refers to his own apostolic sufferings undergone for the sake of the church’s growth, never to any addition to Christ’s finished atoning work. This distinction also guards against conflation with merit-accumulating ascetic suffering (công đức tích lũy).
- οἰκονομία (oikonomia) — “stewardship, administration, commission.” [NEW] Vietnamese rendering: chức vụ quản trị. Risk: Medium.
- διάκονος (diakonos) — “servant, minister.” [NEW] Vietnamese rendering: người phục vụ / chấp sự. Risk: Low.
Chapter 2
- φιλοσοφία (philosophia) — “philosophy.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: “philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition” (2:8) — human speculative systems that displace Christ’s supremacy and sufficiency. Vietnamese rendering: triết học. Risk: High. Must be taught carefully so as not to appear anti-intellectual; the object of the warning is any human system of thought (religious or secular) that competes with or supplements Christ’s sufficiency, not learning or reasoning as such.
- παράδοσις (paradosis) — “tradition.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: “tradition of men” (2:8) opposed to Christ. Vietnamese rendering: truyền thống. Risk: High. Vietnamese culture places immense weight on truyền thống, especially ancestor-related family tradition (thờ cúng tổ tiên). This doctrine must be carefully framed: it rejects traditions that displace Christ’s supremacy or add requirements to the finished gospel, not filial respect or family honor as such. Requires a theologian’s teaching note distinguishing the two.
- στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου (stoicheia tou kosmou) — “elemental spirits/elements of the world.” [NEW] Literal meaning: basic components — of a system of thought, of the physical world, or (most likely here) elemental spiritual powers thought to govern the cosmos and its calendar. Semantic range: disputed among scholars between “elemental substances,” “basic principles,” and “elemental spirits.” Contextual theological meaning: whatever the precise referent, Paul says believers have died to these powers’ claim on them (2:20). Vietnamese rendering: những thế lực sơ khai của thế gian. Risk: Critical. This is one of the sharpest cultural collision points in the letter. Vietnamese folk cosmology and geomancy (phong thủy) is organized around the Five Elements (ngũ hành) and associated nature/territorial spirits (thần đất, thần sông, thần núi). This term must be explicitly distinguished from the ngũ hành framework and from any implication that Christian teaching validates an elemental-spirit cosmology needing appeasement; instead it must be taught as a category Christ has decisively defeated and from which believers have been set free.
- θεότης (theotēs) — “deity, Godhead,” i.e., the essential nature of being God. [NEW] Distinct from the more general adjective θεῖος (“divine, of God-like quality”). Contextual theological meaning: “the whole fullness of deity dwells in him bodily” (2:9) — the doctrinal peak statement of Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily. Vietnamese rendering: thần tính. Risk: Critical. Anchors the Deity of Christ doctrine already flagged Critical in the baseline; must denote Christ’s full, essential, undiminished divine nature, not merely divine qualities or empowerment.
- σωματικῶς (sōmatikōs) — “bodily, corporeally.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: God’s full deity dwells in Christ “bodily” — in a real, physical human body, permanently, not as a temporary spiritual visitation upon a body. Vietnamese rendering: trong thân xác / cách thể xác. Risk: Critical. This adverb directly rules out any docetic or Gnostic-style reading in which Christ only seemed to have a body, and equally rules out any framing (paralleling κατοικέω at 1:19) resembling temporary spirit-possession of a human medium (hầu đồng/lên đồng). Requires a mandatory teaching note reinforcing the Incarnation doctrine already fixed in the baseline (Ngôi Lời trở nên xác thịt) — full deity, permanently, in a real human body, once.
- χειρόγραφον (cheirographon) — “handwritten document, certificate of indebtedness.” [NEW] Literal meaning: a legal document recording a debt in the debtor’s own hand. Contextual theological meaning: the record of sin-debt against believers, canceled (“wiped out,” ἐξαλείψας) and nailed to the cross (2:14). Vietnamese rendering: văn kiện ghi nợ (tội lỗi). Risk: Critical. This legal-debt metaphor carries a severe collision risk in the Vietnamese context, where the concept of karmic debt (nghiệp) and filial debt to be repaid to parents/ancestors (nợ công ơn sinh thành, ơn nghĩa) are deeply embedded cultural frameworks. Requires an explicit theologian’s note: the sin-debt in Colossians 2:14 is canceled entirely and unilaterally by God through the cross — it is not gradually reduced through merit, ritual, or accumulated good deeds, and is categorically different from karmic debt that must be worked off across lifetimes.
- δόγμα / δογματίζω (dogma / dogmatizō) — “decree, regulation / to submit to regulations.” [NEW] Vietnamese rendering: quy tắc / luật lệ. Risk: Medium.
- θριαμβεύω (thriambeuō) — “to lead in a triumphal procession, to triumph over.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: Christ’s public, decisive victory over the ἀρχαί and ἐξουσίαι at the cross (2:15) — see also 1:16 above. Vietnamese rendering: đắc thắng / khải hoàn. Risk: Medium.
- σκιά / σῶμα (skia / sōma, contrastive use) — “shadow / substance.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: OT ceremonial regulations (food, festivals, sabbaths) were a “shadow” pointing to the reality (σῶμα) now present in Christ (2:17). Vietnamese rendering: hình bóng / thực thể. Risk: Medium.
- ταπεινοφροσύνη (tapeinophrosynē, negative sense here) — “humility,” used ironically of false, self-imposed asceticism (2:18, 2:23). Vietnamese rendering: sự khiêm nhường (giả dối) — flagged contextually. Risk: High. This exact term recurs with a POSITIVE sense in 3:12 as a Christian virtue. Translators must render the same Vietnamese word in both places (sự khiêm nhường) but flag ch. 2’s usage as ironic/critical of self-devised false humility, requiring a contextual note to prevent confusion.
- θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων (thrēskeia tōn angelōn) — “worship of angels.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: a component of the false teaching Paul condemns (2:18). Vietnamese rendering: sự thờ phượng các thiên sứ. Risk: High. Direct relevance to Vietnamese religious practice, in which a wide range of spirits, guardian deities, and tutelary figures (thần hộ mệnh, thổ địa, thành hoàng) receive devotion and offerings. Must be taught as a warning against any devotion directed to created spiritual beings, however exalted, in place of or alongside Christ.
- ἐμβατεύω (embateuō) — “to enter into, dwell on” (of visions). [NEW] Rare, technical term. Vietnamese rendering: chú tâm vào (những sự hiện thấy). Risk: Medium.
- ἐθελοθρησκία (ethelothrēskia) — “self-made/self-willed religion.” [NEW] Literal meaning: a compound of “willing/choosing for oneself” and “religion/worship” — religious practice devised by human will rather than commanded by God. Vietnamese rendering: tôn giáo tự đặt ra / sự thờ phượng theo ý riêng. Risk: High. This term names precisely the self-effort religious pattern the baseline already flags in its Grace doctrine notes (contrast with phước đức/công đức, merit accumulated through self-directed practice). Requires a note connecting this warning explicitly to the sufficiency of Christ’s finished work as the alternative to any self-devised path of religious achievement.
- ἀφειδία σώματος (apheidia sōmatos) — “severity/harsh treatment of the body,” ascetic self-denial. [NEW] Vietnamese rendering: sự khắc khổ thân thể. Risk: Medium. Resonates with ascetic practice in Vietnamese Buddhist tradition; must be framed as a rejected human strategy for holiness, contrasted with Spirit-empowered sanctification ([REUSE] sự nên thánh).
- σάββατα / νεομηνία / ἑορτή (sabbata / neomēnia / heortē) — “sabbaths / new moon / festival.” [NEW] Calendar observances Paul says are not to bind the conscience (2:16). Vietnamese rendering: ngày Sa-bát / ngày trăng mới / ngày lễ. Risk: Medium. Note the cultural resonance (without doctrinal equivalence) with the Vietnamese lunar calendar’s festival cycle (Tết and related observances); the point of the passage is Christian liberty from ceremonial regulation, not a judgment on cultural calendar practice as such.
Chapter 3
- συνηγέρθητε / συζωοποιέω (synēgerthēte / syzōopoieō) — “you were raised with [Christ] / made alive together with.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: the anchor for Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him) — believers’ spiritual union with Christ’s own death and resurrection (3:1, cf. 2:12-13). Vietnamese rendering: được sống lại với Đấng Christ, drawing on [REUSE] sự sống lại. Risk: Critical. Must retain the same forbidden-substitution guard already fixed in the baseline for “resurrection”: never rendered with any resonance of luân hồi/đầu thai. Union-with-Christ language (dying and rising WITH him) must be clearly relational/participatory, not a personal cycle of death-and-rebirth.
- συναποθνήσκω / ἀποθνήσκω (synapothnēskō / apothnēskō) — “to die with [Christ].” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: believers’ old identity has died with Christ (2:20, 3:3). Vietnamese rendering: đã chết với Đấng Christ. Risk: Critical, same guard as above.
- κρύπτω (kryptō) — “to hide.” Contextual theological meaning: “your life is hidden with Christ in God” (3:3) — security of identity, not concealment or shame. Vietnamese rendering: được giấu kín. Risk: Medium.
- φανερόω (phaneroō) — “to reveal, manifest, appear.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: Christ’s future appearing and believers’ appearing with him in glory (3:4). Vietnamese rendering: hiện ra. Risk: Low-Medium.
- νεκρόω (nekroō) — “to put to death.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: the active, decisive mortification of sinful practices (3:5) as the practical outworking of Putting Off the Old Self. Vietnamese rendering: làm cho chết (đi). Risk: Medium.
- Vice list (3:5, 3:8-9): πορνεία (fornication, tà dâm), ἀκαθαρσία (impurity, ô uế), πάθος (passion, dục vọng xấu xa), ἐπιθυμία κακή (evil desire, sự ham muốn xấu xa), πλεονεξία (covetousness, sự tham lam), ὀργή (wrath/anger, sự giận dữ), θυμός (rage, sự hung ác), κακία (malice, sự hiểm độc), βλασφημία (slander, sự nói xấu), αἰσχρολογία (filthy language, lời tục tĩu), ψεῦδος (lying, sự dối trá). Risk: Medium, low ambiguity individually.
- πλεονεξία … εἰδωλολατρία (pleonexia … eidōlolatria) — “covetousness, which is idolatry.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: Paul explicitly names covetousness “idolatry” — displacing God’s rightful claim on the heart with the love of possessions. Vietnamese rendering: sự tham lam … sự thờ hình tượng. Risk: High. Directly relevant to the Vietnamese context of household and temple idol/image veneration (thờ cúng thần tượng, thờ hình tượng); the passage broadens idolatry beyond literal image-worship to any misplaced ultimate desire, which is itself an important teaching point requiring a note so it is not read as ONLY about physical images.
- ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ (orgē tou theou) — “the wrath of God” (3:6). [NEW] Vietnamese rendering: cơn thịnh nộ của Đức Chúa Trời. Risk: High. A personal, righteous, moral response of a personal God to sin — must not be flattened into impersonal karmic retribution (nghiệp báo), which operates automatically and impersonally rather than as the judgment of a personal God, per the baseline’s caution on “sin.”
- παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος (palaios anthrōpos) — “the old man/self.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: the pre-conversion identity, put off decisively at conversion (3:9) — the direct anchor for Putting Off the Old Self. Vietnamese rendering: người cũ. Risk: Critical. Must convey a definitive, completed putting-off (an accomplished fact in union with Christ), not a gradual moral self-improvement project (which would collapse this doctrine into a Confucian self-cultivation model, đức hạnh, already flagged as a risk in the baseline’s “righteousness” entry).
- νέος / καινός ἄνθρωπος (neos / kainos anthrōpos) — “the new man/self.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: the new identity given in Christ, being progressively renewed (3:10) — the direct anchor for Putting On the New. Vietnamese rendering: người mới. Risk: Critical, same doctrinal pairing as above.
- ἀνακαινούμενον (anakainoumenon) — “being renewed.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: ongoing renewal “in knowledge, after the image of its Creator” — deliberately recalling εἰκών from 1:15. Vietnamese rendering: được đổi mới. Risk: High. Must be tied back explicitly to the εἰκών doctrine of 1:15 (Christ as the image of God) — believers are being remade after that same divine image, in Christ, by the Spirit, not through self-generated effort.
- Unity list (3:11): Ἕλλην, Ἰουδαῖος, περιτομή, ἀκροβυστία, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος — “Greek, Jew, circumcised, uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free.” [NEW/partial REUSE] Contextual theological meaning: parallels the baseline’s Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine but broadens it to every ethnic and social distinction, all dissolved “in Christ.” Vietnamese rendering: reuse dân ngoại pattern where applicable; new terms: người nô lệ (slave), người tự do (free). Risk: Medium-High. Christian identity in Christ (baseline doctrine, reused) must be taught as superseding, not abolishing in a purely social sense, every inherited social category.
- σπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ, χρηστότης, ταπεινοφροσύνη (positive sense), πραΰτης, μακροθυμία (3:12) — “heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience.” [NEW] Vietnamese rendering: lòng thương xót, sự nhân từ, sự khiêm nhường, sự nhu mì, sự nhẫn nhục. Risk: Low-Medium, standard virtue vocabulary; note the contextual flag on ταπεινοφροσύνη from ch. 2 above.
- ἀνέχομαι / χαρίζομαι (anechomai / charizomai) — “to bear with / to forgive graciously.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: mutual forgiveness modeled explicitly on Christ’s own forgiveness — direct tie to [REUSE] ân điển (grace). Vietnamese rendering: nhường nhịn nhau / tha thứ nhau. Risk: Medium.
- σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητος (syndesmos tēs teleiotētos) — “the bond of perfection/completeness” (of love, 3:14). Vietnamese rendering: dây liên kết của sự trọn lành. Risk: Medium.
- λόγος τοῦ Χριστοῦ (logos tou Christou) — “the word of Christ” (3:16). Vietnamese rendering: lời của Đấng Christ. Risk: Low.
- ψαλμοί, ὕμνοι, ᾠδαὶ πνευματικαί (psalmoi, hymnoi, ōdai pneumatikai) — “psalms, hymns, spiritual songs” (3:16). Vietnamese rendering: các bài thi thiên, các bài thánh ca, các bài hát thiêng liêng. Risk: Low.
- Household code terms (3:18-4:1):
- ὑποτάσσω (hypotassō) — “to submit, to place oneself under.” [NEW] Contextual theological meaning: wives’ submission “in the Lord” (3:18), paired immediately with the husband’s command to ἀγαπᾶτε (love, 3:19) — mutual, Christ-centered household order, not unilateral hierarchy. Vietnamese rendering: vâng phục. Risk: High. Vietnamese family structure carries deep Confucian hierarchical expectations (tam cương — the three fundamental bonds, including husband-wife) predating and independent of any Christian framing. This doctrine (Household Codes) requires explicit theological framing that submission here is qualified “in the Lord,” paired inseparably with sacrificial Christlike love from the husband, and must not be taught as validating a purely hierarchical Confucian household model on its own cultural terms.
- ἀγαπᾶτε (agapate) — “love!” (imperative, husbands, 3:19). Builds on [REUSE]-adjacent ἀγάπη above. Risk: Medium.
- ὑπακούετε (hypakouete) — “obey!” (children, 3:20; slaves, 3:22). [NEW] Distinct from, but conceptually adjacent to, the baseline’s obedience_of_faith doctrine (sự vâng phục của đức tin), which concerns obedience flowing from faith rather than household hierarchy. Vietnamese rendering: vâng lời / vâng phục. Risk: Medium. Flag the distinction from obedience_of_faith so the two are not conflated in teaching.
- μὴ ἐρεθίζετε (mē erethizete) — “do not provoke/embitter” (fathers toward children, 3:21). Vietnamese rendering: chớ làm cho … buồn lòng / ngã lòng. Risk: Low.
- δοῦλοι … κύριοι (douloi … kyrioi) — “slaves … masters” (3:22-4:1). Risk: High — a distinct and important translation caution: κύριος here names a HUMAN master, not the divine Lord. The baseline reserves Chúa exclusively for God/Christ (lord doctrine, Critical risk). This human-referent κύριος MUST be rendered with a different Vietnamese term — chủ (master/employer) — to avoid any confusion with, or dilution of, the exclusive divine title Chúa. This distinction must be documented explicitly for Phase 2 segment translation. The passage’s historical slavery context also requires a brief contextual note for contemporary application (workplace relationships), without collapsing the original historical referent.
- προσωπολημψία (prosōpolēmpsia) — “partiality, favoritism” (3:25, 4:1). Vietnamese rendering: sự tây vị. Risk: Low-Medium.
Chapter 4
- προσευχή / προσεύχομαι (proseuchē / proseuchomai) — “prayer / to pray” (4:2). [NEW] General term for prayer, distinct from the baseline’s [REUSE] sự cầu thay (intercession, Critical risk, Romans 8). Vietnamese rendering: sự cầu nguyện. Risk: Medium. Where Colossians 4:2-4, 4:12 describes praying “on behalf of” others (Epaphras “always struggling for you in his prayers,” 4:12), apply the same Critical-risk guard already fixed in the baseline for intercession: never modeled on cầu xin tổ tiên (petitioning deceased ancestors); always the Spirit-enabled prayer of a living believer to a living, personal God, not intermediation through a departed family member.
- γρηγορέω (grēgoreō) — “to watch, stay alert” (4:2). Vietnamese rendering: tỉnh thức. Risk: Low.
- θύρα τοῦ λόγου (thyra tou logou) — “a door for the word” (4:3), an evangelistic-opportunity metaphor. Vietnamese rendering: cửa ngõ cho lời Chúa. Risk: Low.
- μυστήριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ (mystērion tou Christou) — “the mystery of Christ” (4:3). [Same term as ch.1] Risk: High, per ch.1 analysis above.
- ἐν ἅλατι ἠρτυμένος (en halati ērtymenos) — “seasoned with salt” (4:6), idiom for gracious, attractive speech. Vietnamese rendering: lời nói có ơn, đậm đà như có muối. Risk: Low. Handle as a natural Vietnamese idiom for winsome speech rather than a literal salt reference; no doctrinal content at risk.
- σύνδουλος / συνεργός (syndoulos / synergos) — “fellow servant / fellow worker” (4:7, 4:11). Vietnamese rendering: bạn cùng làm tôi mọi (cho Chúa) / bạn đồng công. Risk: Low.
- ἀσπάζομαι (aspazomai) — “to greet” (throughout 4:10-15). Vietnamese rendering: chào / gởi lời chào. Risk: Low.
- Proper names (Τυχικός, Ὀνήσιμος, Ἀρίσταρχος, Μᾶρκος, Ἐπαφρᾶς, Λουκᾶς, Δημᾶς, Νύμφα, Ἄρχιππος, etc.) — [NEW, proper nouns] Use established Vietnamese Protestant Bible transliteration conventions (Tу-chi-cơ, Ô-nê-sim, A-ri-tạc, Mác, Ê-pháp-ra, Lu-ca, Đê-ma, Nim-pha, Ạc-chíp). Risk: Low. No doctrinal risk; consistency with established Bible-translation transliteration forms is the only concern.
Chapter 4 summary note: Chapter 4 introduces no new Critical- or High-risk doctrinal terms beyond μυστήριον (already established in ch.1) and the intercession-adjacent caution on προσευχή; it otherwise consists of standard epistolary greeting, travel, and commendation vocabulary with low doctrinal risk, plus proper names following established transliteration conventions.
