Cross-Reference Analysis
09 Cross-Reference Analysis — Revelation (English → Vietnamese)
Citation and Normalization Conventions
All Scripture citations in this document use the normalized format Book Chapter:Verse (e.g., Genesis 15:6, Isaiah 65:17, Romans 8:28), matching the convention required for machine-normalizable citations across the TRI pipeline. Vietnamese-facing outputs in Phase 2 must convert these to Bản Dịch Truyền Thống book-name conventions per the baseline AI Requirements cross-reference rules (e.g., Ê-sai 65:17, Rô-ma 8:28), while internal Phase 1 artifacts retain the English normalized form for cross-curriculum matching.
This matrix covers every chapter of Revelation (1–22), tracking Old Testament quotations and allusions, New Testament (especially Gospel and Pauline, particularly Romans) connections, messianic references, typology, and Vietnamese-specific translation sensitivity. Risk tiers (Critical/High/Medium/Low) follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json framework exactly. Where a term already appears in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json, its established rendering is reused without alteration; new sensitivities specific to a given cross-reference are noted.
Part 1 — OT/NT Cross-Reference Matrix by Chapter
Chapter 1 — Prologue and Vision of the Glorified Christ
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 1:7 | Return and Reign of Christ | Christ, “those who pierced him” | Allusion: Zechariah 12:10; Daniel 7:13 | Medium. “Every eye will see him” must retain universal, visible, bodily return language; not a private/mystical vision. |
| Revelation 1:8 | Sovereignty of God over History | God, Christ | Allusion: Isaiah 41:4; 44:6; 48:12 (“I am the first and the last”) | Low. “Alpha and Omega” (An-pha và Ô-mê-ga) is transliterated; keep consistent with 21:6, 22:13. |
| Revelation 1:12–16 | Return and Reign of Christ; Deity of Christ | Son of Man (Christ) | Allusion: Daniel 7:9–13; Daniel 10:5–6; Ezekiel 1:26–28 | High. “Son of Man” (Con Người) must be anchored to Daniel 7’s exalted-authority background, reused consistently with the baseline Romans register for divine titles. |
| Revelation 1:17–18 | Sovereignty of God over History; Resurrection | Christ | Allusion: Isaiah 44:6; Deuteronomy 32:39 | Critical. “I died, and behold I am alive forevermore” must reuse baseline resurrection (sự sống lại) framing — bodily, historical, once-for-all, never đầu thai/luân hồi. |
| Revelation 1:5–6 | Church as Bride of Christ (priesthood); Worship of the Lamb | Believers as priests | NT parallel: 1 Peter 2:9; Exodus 19:6 | High. “Made us… priests” (thầy tế lễ) must be distinguished from Buddhist monastic clergy and folk ritual specialists (thầy cúng), per baseline note. |
Chapter 2 — Letters to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 2:7 | New Heaven and New Earth (anticipatory) | — | Quotation/allusion: Genesis 2:9; Genesis 3:22–24 | Medium. “Tree of life” (cây sự sống) anticipates the full restoration in Revelation 22:2,14,19; keep terminology identical across all three occurrences. |
| Revelation 2:17 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness | — | Allusion: Exodus 16:14–15,31–35 (manna) | Low. “Hidden manna” (ma-na giấu kín); wilderness-provision typology. |
| Revelation 2:26–27 | Return and Reign of Christ | Overcomer, Christ | Quotation: Psalm 2:8–9 | High. “Rule with an iron scepter” is messianic Psalm 2 language directly applied first to believers and ultimately to Christ (19:15); must retain the shared “rod of iron” (cây gậy sắt) rendering across both occurrences. |
| Revelation 2:28 | Return and Reign of Christ | Christ (implicit) | Anticipates Numbers 24:17 (star out of Jacob) | Medium. “Morning star” (sao mai); first occurrence of a title fulfilled in 22:16. |
Chapter 3 — Letters to Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 3:5 | Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | Christ | Allusion: Exodus 32:32–33; Psalm 69:28; Daniel 12:1 | Critical. First occurrence of “book of life” (sách sự sống); must be distinguished from the folk/Taoist “sổ sinh tử” (karmic register), per Part 2 of the Semantic Analysis. |
| Revelation 3:7 | Sovereignty of God over History | Christ, David | Quotation: Isaiah 22:22 (“key of David”) | Medium, per baseline David entry. Ties Christ’s authority to the Davidic covenant fulfilled trajectory shared with Romans 1:3 (“seed of David,” dòng dõi Đa-vít). |
| Revelation 3:9 | Judgment of the Wicked; Unity of Jews and Gentiles (by contrast) | “synagogue of Satan” | Allusion: Isaiah 60:14 | Medium. Do not soften “will bow down at your feet” into a generic honor gesture; it is an OT vindication motif reapplied. |
| Revelation 3:12 | Church as Bride of Christ; New Heaven and New Earth (anticipatory) | Christ | Allusion: 1 Kings 7:21 (temple pillars); anticipates New Jerusalem (ch. 21) | Medium. |
| Revelation 3:14 | Sovereignty of God over History | Christ (“the Amen”) | Allusion: Isaiah 65:16 | Low. “Amen” transliterated (A-men), per baseline transliteration standard. |
| Revelation 3:19 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness | Christ | Quotation: Proverbs 3:12 | Low. |
Chapter 4 — The Throne Room Vision
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 4:2–3 | Sovereignty of God over History; Worship of the Lamb | God (on the throne) | Allusion: Ezekiel 1:26–28; Daniel 7:9 | High. “Throne” (ngai) is the book’s central recurring symbol; keep consistently distinct from a merely generic royal-court image. |
| Revelation 4:6–8 | Worship of the Lamb | Four living creatures | Quotation/allusion: Ezekiel 1:5–10; 10:14; Isaiah 6:2–3 | Medium. “Holy, holy, holy” (thánh, thánh, thánh) directly quotes Isaiah’s throne-room vision — the same triple-holy formula must be rendered identically wherever it recurs (cf. 4:8). |
| Revelation 4:3 | Sovereignty of God over History | — | Allusion: Genesis 9:13; Ezekiel 1:28 (rainbow around the throne) | Low. |
| Revelation 4:10–11 | Worship of the Lamb | 24 elders | NT/OT pattern: cf. Psalm 96:8–9; 1 Chronicles 29:11 | High. “Worthy” (đáng) language grounds exclusive worship due to the Creator — foundational for the ch. 5 extension to the Lamb. |
Chapter 5 — The Lamb and the Scroll
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 5:5 | Return and Reign of Christ; Messianic Promise | Christ | Quotation/allusion: Genesis 49:9–10 (“Lion of the tribe of Judah”); Isaiah 11:1,10 (“Root of David”) | High. Reuses baseline messiah (Đấng Mê-si-a) and david (Đa-vít); ties directly to Romans 1:3’s “seed of David” (dòng dõi Đa-vít) — render both consistently. |
| Revelation 5:6,9,12 | Worship of the Lamb; Judgment of the Wicked (atonement basis) | Christ (the Lamb) | Typology: Exodus 12 (Passover lamb); Isaiah 53:7 (“led like a lamb to the slaughter”) | Critical. Chiên Con (the Lamb) — central Christological title; must never be confused with generic “con chiên” (an ordinary believer, a common Vietnamese Christian self-designation). |
| Revelation 5:1,9 | Sovereignty of God over History; Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | — | Allusion: Isaiah 29:11; Ezekiel 2:9–10; Daniel 12:4 (sealed scroll/book) | Medium. |
| Revelation 5:9–10 | Church as Bride of Christ; Unity of Jews and Gentiles | The redeemed | NT parallel: Romans 3:29–30 (no distinction, one people); baseline gentiles (dân ngoại) | Medium. “From every tribe and language and people and nation” must retain unqualified universality, matching the Romans baseline’s Universal Scope of the Gospel doctrine. |
Chapter 6 — The First Six Seals
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 6:1–8 | Sovereignty of God over History; Judgment of the Wicked | Four horsemen | Allusion: Zechariah 1:8–11; 6:1–8 | Medium. Symbolic figures under God’s sovereign permission, not autonomous forces. |
| Revelation 6:9–11 | Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints; Perseverance | Martyred souls | Allusion: Genesis 4:10 (Abel’s blood crying out); Psalm 79:5,10 | High. “How long, O Lord…?” (Chúa ơi, cho đến chừng nào…?) — vindication is assured but delayed; must not be rendered as doubt about God’s sovereignty. |
| Revelation 6:12–14 | Judgment of the Wicked; Return and Reign of Christ | — | Quotation/allusion: Isaiah 34:4; Joel 2:10,31 (cosmic upheaval imagery) | Medium. Stock apocalyptic cosmic-collapse imagery; caution against over-literalizing celestial mechanics (Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine). |
| Revelation 6:16 | Judgment of the Wicked | — | Quotation/allusion: Isaiah 2:10,19; Hosea 10:8 (“hide us from the wrath of the Lamb”) | High. Pairs “wrath” with “the Lamb” (cơn thịnh nộ của Chiên Con) — retain the deliberate, startling juxtaposition. |
Chapter 7 — The 144,000 and the Great Multitude
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 7:3–8 | Sovereignty of God over History; Assurance of God’s Final Victory | 144,000 sealed | Allusion: Ezekiel 9:4–6 (mark on the foreheads of the faithful) | Medium. Symbolic completeness (12×12×1000), not a strict headcount — per Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine. |
| Revelation 7:9 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles; Church as Bride of Christ | Great multitude | NT parallel: Romans 10:12–13 (“no distinction between Jew and Greek… everyone who calls”) | Medium. Reuses baseline gentiles/nations (dân ngoại); must retain unqualified universal scope, matching Romans 10:12 exactly in doctrinal force. |
| Revelation 7:9 | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | — | Allusion: Leviticus 23:40 (palm branches, Feast of Tabernacles); Zechariah 14:16 | Low. |
| Revelation 7:16–17 | Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil; New Heaven and New Earth (anticipatory) | The Lamb as shepherd | Quotation: Isaiah 49:10; Isaiah 25:8 (“wipe away every tear”) | Critical. Directly anticipates Revelation 21:4 verbatim; both occurrences must use identical Vietnamese phrasing (sẽ lau hết nước mắt) for cross-document consistency. |
Chapter 8 — The Seventh Seal and First Trumpets
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 8:5 | Prayer and Intercession; Sovereignty of God over History | — | Allusion: Ezekiel 10:2 (coals from the altar) | High. Incense/prayer imagery (hương, lời cầu nguyện) connects directly to the baseline Prayer and Intercession doctrine’s Critical distinction from ancestor petition. |
| Revelation 8:3–4 | Prayer and Intercession | Saints | NT parallel: baseline intercession (sự cầu thay, Critical) | Critical. “Prayers of the saints” (lời cầu nguyện của các thánh đồ) rising as incense must never be modeled on cầu xin tổ tiên (petitioning ancestors); prayer here ascends to God alone. |
| Revelation 8:7–12 | Judgment of the Wicked | — | Typology: Exodus 7–10 (plagues of Egypt: hail/fire, blood, darkness) | Medium. Deliberate Exodus-plague typology; teach as historical pattern-fulfillment, not independent new imagery. |
Chapter 9 — Trumpets Five and Six; the Abyss
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 9:1–11 | Sovereignty of God over History; Judgment of the Wicked | Locusts, Apollyon | Typology: Exodus 10:12–15; Joel 1:2–2:11 | High. Demonic locust-army under God’s bounded permission, not an autonomous evil force. |
| Revelation 9:11 | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | Apollyon/Abaddon | Allusion: Job 26:6; Proverbs 15:11 (Abaddon as a name for the realm of death) | Low. Transliterated proper name (A-bô-ly-ôn). |
Chapter 10 — The Little Scroll
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 10:8–10 | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation; Perseverance and Faithful Witness | John | Quotation/allusion: Ezekiel 2:8–3:3 (eating the scroll) | Medium. Sweetness/bitterness of receiving and proclaiming God’s word — direct typological reuse of Ezekiel’s commissioning. |
| Revelation 10:7 | Sovereignty of God over History | — | Allusion: Amos 3:7 | Medium. “Mystery of God” (sự mầu nhiệm của Đức Chúa Trời); distinguish from esoteric occult “mystery,” per Semantic Analysis ch.10 note. |
Chapter 11 — The Two Witnesses; the Seventh Trumpet
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 11:3–6 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution | Two witnesses | Typology: 1 Kings 17:1 (Elijah, drought); Exodus 7:17–21 (Moses, water to blood); Zechariah 4:2–3,11–14 (two olive trees/lampstands) | High. “Two witnesses” (hai người làm chứng) combines Elijah/Moses typology with Zechariah’s lampstand imagery; do not collapse into a single OT figure. |
| Revelation 11:1–2 | Sovereignty of God over History | — | Allusion: Ezekiel 40:3 (measuring the temple); Zechariah 2:1–5 | Medium. |
| Revelation 11:11–12 | Resurrection; Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | Two witnesses | Allusion: Ezekiel 37:5,10 (breath entering slain bodies) | Critical. Their resurrection and ascension model the baseline resurrection doctrine (sự sống lại) — bodily, visible, vindicating; never đầu thai/luân hồi. |
| Revelation 11:15 | Return and Reign of Christ; Sovereignty of God over History | Christ, God | Quotation/allusion: Psalm 2:2,8; Daniel 2:44; Daniel 7:14 | Critical. “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord” (Nước của thế gian đã trở nên Nước của Chúa chúng ta) is the thesis-statement of Return and Reign of Christ; assign the same cross-document consistency priority the baseline gives Romans 10:9. |
Chapter 12 — The Woman, the Male Child, and the Dragon
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 12:1–2 | Sovereignty of God over History; Church as Bride of Christ (typological forerunner) | The woman | Allusion: Genesis 37:9–10 (sun, moon, stars — Joseph’s dream); Isaiah 66:7–8 | Medium. The woman is best read corporately (covenant people/Israel bearing the Messiah), not as an isolated individual figure to be equated with any single Vietnamese folk-mother figure. |
| Revelation 12:4–5 | Return and Reign of Christ; Messianic Promise | The male child (Christ), the dragon | Quotation/allusion: Genesis 3:15 (the protoevangelium — enmity between the woman’s offspring and the serpent); Psalm 2:9 | Critical. Genesis 3:15 is the seed-promise fulfilled in Christ’s victory over the dragon; this must be taught as the OT root of the entire Satan/dragon conflict resolved definitively at the cross and consummated in Revelation 20. |
| Revelation 12:9 | Sovereignty of God over History; Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil | The dragon, Satan | Quotation/allusion: Genesis 3:1 (“that ancient serpent”); Isaiah 27:1 (Leviathan) | Critical. Confirms δράκων = ὄφις = Σατανᾶς = διάβολος; see Semantic Analysis’s highest-severity cultural-collision note on con rồng. |
| Revelation 12:7 | Sovereignty of God over History | Michael | Allusion: Daniel 12:1 | Medium. |
| Revelation 12:11 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness; Worship of the Lamb | Believers, the dragon | NT parallel: Romans 8:37 (“more than conquerors”); Romans 16:20 (“God will soon crush Satan under your feet,” echoing Genesis 3:15) | Critical. “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony” directly parallels Romans 8:31–39’s assurance passage; both should be taught together as the same doctrinal reality — victory secured by Christ, appropriated by faith and confession. |
Chapter 13 — The Beast from the Sea and the Beast from the Earth
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 13:1–2 | Judgment of the Wicked; Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | The beast | Quotation/allusion: Daniel 7:2–8 (four beasts, composite imagery) | Critical. Deliberately combines Daniel’s four beasts into one; teach as continuation of Daniel’s vision of successive God-opposing world empires, not an unrelated new image. |
| Revelation 13:5–7 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution | The beast, the saints | Allusion: Daniel 7:21,25 (the beast persecutes the saints for a set time) | High. |
| Revelation 13:18 | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | The beast | Possible allusion: 1 Kings 10:14 (666 talents of gold — Solomon’s excess, contrasted with true wisdom) | High. Numeric symbolism (7 = completeness, divine; 6 = falling short); avoid speculative modern-identity claims in any Vietnamese teaching notes. |
Chapter 14 — The Lamb on Mount Zion; the Harvest
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 14:1 | Church as Bride of Christ; Worship of the Lamb | The Lamb, 144,000 | Allusion: Psalm 2:6 (Mount Zion, God’s king enthroned) | Medium. |
| Revelation 14:6–7 | Sovereignty of God over History; the Gospel (baseline) | An angel | NT parallel: Romans 1:16 (baseline power_of_god, gospel) | Medium. “Eternal gospel” (Tin Lành đời đời) reuses baseline gospel exactly; the universal proclamation echoes Romans’ own missionary logic (Romans 10:14–15, baseline evangelism doctrine). |
| Revelation 14:10,19 | Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | — | Quotation/allusion: Isaiah 63:1–6; Joel 3:13 (winepress) | High. “Wine/winepress of the wrath of God” (rượu/bàn ép rượu của sự thịnh nộ của Đức Chúa Trời) — full, final measure of judgment. |
| Revelation 14:12 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution | Saints | NT parallel: Romans 5:3–5 (endurance producing hope); baseline saints | High, per baseline saints entry. |
Chapter 15 — The Seven Bowls Introduced
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 15:3 | Sovereignty of God over History; Worship of the Lamb | Moses, the Lamb | Quotation/allusion: Exodus 15:1–18 (Song of Moses) | Medium. The united “song of Moses and of the Lamb” (bài ca của Môi-se và bài ca của Chiên Con) ties OT deliverance typologically to the Lamb’s redemption — continuity of Sovereignty of God over History across both Testaments. |
| Revelation 15:8 | Sovereignty of God over History | — | Allusion: Exodus 40:34–35; Isaiah 6:4 (glory-cloud filling the sanctuary) | Medium. |
Chapter 16 — The Seven Bowls Poured Out
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 16:1–21 | Judgment of the Wicked | — | Typology: Exodus 7–11 (plagues) | Medium. Continues the Exodus-plague typological pattern from chs. 8–9, now in final/complete form. |
| Revelation 16:16 | Sovereignty of God over History; Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | — | Allusion: Judges 5:19; 2 Kings 23:29–30 (Megiddo); Zechariah 12:11 | Medium. “Armageddon” symbolic; avoid literal modern military identification, per baseline Symbolic Interpretation caution. |
| Revelation 16:15 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness | Christ | NT parallel: Matthew 24:42–44 (“stay awake”) | Low. |
Chapter 17 — Babylon the Great Harlot
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 17:1–5 | Judgment of the Wicked; Worship of the Lamb (by contrast) | The great harlot, Babylon | Typology: Isaiah 47:1–15; Jeremiah 51:7,13; Nahum 3:4 | High. Corporate, symbolic idolatry personified as sexual immorality — not a statement about a single historical woman or an individual sin case study. |
| Revelation 17:14 | Return and Reign of Christ | Christ, the beast’s kings | NT parallel: Romans 16:20 (assurance of Satan’s defeat); 1 Timothy 6:15 | Critical. “King of kings and Lord of lords” (Vua của các vua, Chúa của các chúa) — first full occurrence; must match 19:16 exactly. |
Chapter 18 — The Fall of Babylon
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 18:2–3 | Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | Babylon | Quotation/allusion: Isaiah 13:19–22; Isaiah 21:9; Jeremiah 50:39–40 | High. “Babylon the great has fallen” (Ba-by-lôn lớn đã đổ rồi) directly echoes Isaiah’s oracle against historical Babylon, now applied to the entire God-opposing world-system. |
| Revelation 18:4 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness; Church as Bride of Christ | God’s people | Quotation: Jeremiah 51:45; Isaiah 48:20 (“Come out of her, my people”) | High. A call to distinct covenant loyalty, not a call to social withdrawal per se; teach with sensitivity given the weight of family/community belonging in Vietnamese culture. |
| Revelation 18:11–19 | Judgment of the Wicked | Merchants of the earth | Typology: Ezekiel 27:1–36 (lament over Tyre) | Medium. |
| Revelation 18:21 | Judgment of the Wicked | — | Allusion: Jeremiah 51:63–64 (scroll/stone thrown into the Euphrates) | Low. |
Chapter 19 — The Rider on the White Horse; the Marriage of the Lamb
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 19:7–9 | Church as Bride of Christ | The Bride, the Lamb | Typology/allusion: Isaiah 54:5; Hosea 2:19–20 (God as Bridegroom to his covenant people); Isaiah 25:6 (the eschatological banquet) | Critical. “The marriage of the Lamb” (tiệc cưới Chiên Con) fulfills the OT marriage-covenant metaphor for God and his people; directly anticipates Revelation 21:2,9. |
| Revelation 19:11–13 | Return and Reign of Christ; Sovereignty of God over History | Christ (rider on white horse) | Quotation/allusion: Psalm 45:3–5; Isaiah 63:1–6 | Critical. “Word of God” (Ngôi Lời của Đức Chúa Trời) must match the baseline incarnation entry’s Logos rendering exactly (cf. John 1:1,14). |
| Revelation 19:15 | Return and Reign of Christ; Judgment of the Wicked | Christ | Quotation: Psalm 2:9 (rod of iron); Isaiah 63:3 (winepress) | High. Must match the “rod of iron” (cây gậy sắt) rendering already used at 2:27. |
| Revelation 19:16 | Return and Reign of Christ | Christ | Allusion: Daniel 2:47; Deuteronomy 10:17 | Critical. “King of kings and Lord of lords” — cross-document consistency priority equal to Romans 10:9 and 8:28. |
| Revelation 19:20 | Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | Beast, false prophet | Typology: Genesis 19:24 (Sodom, fire and sulfur) | Critical. First full “lake of fire” (hồ lửa) occurrence; per baseline note, distinguish from cyclical Buddhist/Taoist hell cosmology. |
Chapter 20 — The Thousand Years; the Great White Throne
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 20:1–3 | Sovereignty of God over History; Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil | Satan | Allusion: Isaiah 24:21–22 (imprisonment of hostile powers) | High. Satan’s binding is bounded and under God’s direct sovereign control — not an autonomous power struggle with uncertain outcome. |
| Revelation 20:8 | Judgment of the Wicked | Gog and Magog | Quotation/allusion: Ezekiel 38–39 | Medium. Symbolic reuse of Ezekiel’s climactic-enemy imagery, not a fresh unrelated figure. |
| Revelation 20:11–12 | Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | God (on the great white throne) | Allusion: Daniel 7:9–10 (thrones set, books opened) | High. |
| Revelation 20:12,15 | Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | — | Allusion: Exodus 32:32–33; Psalm 69:28; Daniel 7:10 | Critical. “Book of life” reused from 3:5; must retain identical rendering (sách sự sống) and the distinction from the folk-Taoist “sổ sinh tử.” |
| Revelation 20:13–14 | Resurrection; Judgment of the Wicked | — | Allusion: Isaiah 26:19; Daniel 12:2 (“many who sleep… will awake”) | Critical. “The sea gave up the dead” and the final resurrection/judgment must remain within the baseline resurrection doctrine’s bodily, once-for-all framing. |
Chapter 21 (verses 1–8: Core Passage — see full verse-by-verse treatment in 07_semantic_analysis.md Part 1)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 21:1 | New Heaven and New Earth | — | Quotation: Isaiah 65:17; Isaiah 66:22 | Critical. Direct OT quotation; the Vietnamese rendering of “new heavens and a new earth” must match across Isaiah-citation contexts if Isaiah is separately translated in this curriculum’s supplementary OT readings. |
| Revelation 21:1 | New Heaven and New Earth (no more sea) | — | Allusion: Isaiah 51:10; Daniel 7:2–3 (the sea as source of chaos/beasts) | High. See baseline sea-symbolism note; collision risk with Vietnamese coastal sea-spirit veneration. |
| Revelation 21:2 | Church as Bride of Christ; New Heaven and New Earth | New Jerusalem/Bride | Quotation/allusion: Isaiah 52:1; Isaiah 61:10; Isaiah 62:1–5; Ezekiel 40–48 | Critical. New Jerusalem imagery draws directly on Ezekiel’s temple-city vision and Isaiah’s bridal-Zion oracles; must be taught as OT-promise fulfillment, not a freestanding NT invention. |
| Revelation 21:3 | Sovereignty of God over History; New Heaven and New Earth | God | Quotation/allusion: Leviticus 26:11–12; Ezekiel 37:27; Zechariah 2:10–11; Jeremiah 31:33 (covenant formula “I will be their God, and they will be my people”) | Critical. This is a direct citation of the OT covenant formula, quoted also (in NT form) at 2 Corinthians 6:16. Any Vietnamese rendering of the covenant formula used elsewhere in this curriculum’s supplementary OT passages should match: họ sẽ làm dân Ngài, và chính Đức Chúa Trời sẽ ở với họ, làm Đức Chúa Trời của họ. |
| Revelation 21:4 | Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil; New Heaven and New Earth | God | Quotation: Isaiah 25:8 (“he will wipe away the tears from all faces… he will swallow up death forever”) | Critical. Must match Revelation 7:17’s identical wording exactly (sẽ lau hết nước mắt). Death’s abolition (baseline resurrection trajectory) — not one stage of a death-rebirth cycle. |
| Revelation 21:5 | Sovereignty of God over History; Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil | God | Allusion: Isaiah 43:19 (“I am doing a new thing”) | Critical. First-person divine speech; per Semantic Analysis, retain present-tense immediacy. |
| Revelation 21:6 | Sovereignty of God over History | God/Christ | Quotation: Isaiah 55:1 (“come, buy wine and milk without money and without price” — water of life offered freely); reuses Alpha/Omega from 1:8 | Critical. “Freely” (nhưng không, δωρεάν) must preserve the merit-contrast established in the baseline Grace entry. |
| Revelation 21:7 | Church as Bride of Christ (adoption); Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | The overcomer, God | Quotation: 2 Samuel 7:14 (“I will be his father, and he will be my son” — the Davidic covenant sonship formula) | Critical. Direct OT covenant citation; must be rendered consistently with baseline adoption (sự làm con nuôi) and father (Cha) entries — grace and intimacy, not primarily Confucian filial hierarchy (hiếu). |
| Revelation 21:8 | Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | The excluded (vice list) | Typology: Genesis 19:24 (Sodom’s fire and sulfur); Deuteronomy 29:20 (covenant curse language) | Critical. “Lake of fire… the second death” — final, non-cyclical judgment; see baseline notes on hồ lửa and sự chết thứ hai. |
Chapter 21 (verses 9–27) — The New Jerusalem Described
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 21:10–14 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles; Church as Bride of Christ | — | Quotation/allusion: Ezekiel 40:2; 48:30–35 (twelve gates named for the tribes); Isaiah 54:11–12 | Medium. Foundations named for the apostles, gates for the twelve tribes — unites OT Israel and NT apostolic foundation into one people (baseline Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine). |
| Revelation 21:11,23 | Worship of the Lamb; New Heaven and New Earth | God, the Lamb | Quotation/allusion: Isaiah 60:1–3,19–20 | Medium. Reuses baseline glory (sự vinh hiển); the Lamb himself is the city’s light source, fulfilling Isaiah’s promise that the LORD himself will be Zion’s everlasting light. |
| Revelation 21:24–26 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles; Kingdom Mission | Kings of the earth | Quotation/allusion: Isaiah 60:3,5,11; Psalm 72:10–11 | Medium. Nations bringing their glory to the city — universal ingathering, not a political-nationalist image. |
| Revelation 21:27 | Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | — | Allusion: Isaiah 52:1; Joel 3:17 (“nothing unclean shall enter”) | Critical. Reuses “book of life” (sách sự sống); see note at 3:5, 20:12. |
Chapter 22 — The River of Life; Epilogue
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 22:1–2 | New Heaven and New Earth | God, the Lamb | Quotation/allusion: Ezekiel 47:1–12; Genesis 2:9–10; Zechariah 14:8; Psalm 46:4 | High. River of life flowing from the throne, echoing both Eden (Genesis 2) and Ezekiel’s temple-river vision; distinguish from the Pure Land’s jeweled ponds attained by merit. |
| Revelation 22:2–3 | New Heaven and New Earth; Unity of Jews and Gentiles | — | Quotation/allusion: Genesis 3:17–19 (the curse); Ezekiel 47:12 (healing leaves); Zechariah 14:11 | Critical. Complete reversal of the Genesis 3 curse — the theological bookend connecting Genesis 1–3 to Revelation 21–22 across the whole canon. |
| Revelation 22:4 | Worship of the Lamb; Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil | The redeemed | Allusion: Exodus 33:20 (“no one may see my face and live”); Psalm 17:15 | Critical. “They will see his face” — the reversal of the Exodus 33 restriction; unmediated vision of God as the consummate blessing. |
| Revelation 22:5 | New Heaven and New Earth; Sovereignty of God over History | God | Allusion: Isaiah 60:19–20 (no need of sun or moon) | Medium, per 21:11,23 note. |
| Revelation 22:7,12,20 | Return and Reign of Christ; Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil | Christ | Allusion: Habakkuk 2:3 (“it will surely come, it will not delay”) | Critical. “I am coming quickly” (Ta đến mau chóng) — cross-document consistency priority equal to Romans 8:28/10:9. |
| Revelation 22:16 | Messianic Promise; Davidic Covenant | Christ | Quotation/allusion: Numbers 24:17 (“a star shall come out of Jacob”); Isaiah 11:1,10 (Root of David) | High. “Root and offspring of David… bright morning star” unites Balaam’s oracle and Isaiah’s Davidic-root prophecy in a single Christological title; must remain consistent with baseline david/seed_of_david entries. |
| Revelation 22:17 | Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil; the Gospel | The Spirit, the Bride | Quotation/allusion: Isaiah 55:1 (repeats 21:6’s invitation) | Critical. “Let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price” — must match 21:6’s “nhưng không” rendering exactly. |
| Revelation 22:18–19 | Sovereignty of God over History; Inspiration of Scripture (baseline) | — | Quotation/allusion: Deuteronomy 4:2; 12:32 (do not add to or subtract from God’s word) | High. Reuses the canon-closing warning pattern already established in Deuteronomy for the Torah, now applied to the completed prophetic book. |
| Revelation 22:20 | Return and Reign of Christ; Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil | Christ, the Church | NT parallel: 1 Corinthians 16:22 (“Marana tha” — “Come, our Lord!”) | Critical. “Come, Lord Jesus!” (Lạy Đức Chúa Giê-xu, xin hãy đến!) is the Church’s own climactic responsive prayer, parallel in doctrinal weight to Romans 10:9’s confession; assign identical cross-document consistency priority. |
| Revelation 22:21 | Grace (baseline) | — | NT parallel: Romans 16:20,24 (grace-benediction closing formula shared across Pauline epistles) | Critical, per baseline grace entry. The book’s closing benediction, like Romans’ own closing benedictions, grounds the entire vision in grace, not merit. |
Part 2 — Messianic References Summary
Revelation’s messianic Christology draws on at least five distinct OT messianic streams, all converging on Christ:
| Messianic Stream | OT Source | Revelation Occurrence(s) | Vietnamese Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Davidic king | 2 Samuel 7:12–14; Isaiah 11:1,10; Psalm 89:3–4 | 5:5 (“Root of David”); 3:7 (“key of David”); 22:16 (“Root and offspring of David”) | rễ của Đa-vít / chìa khóa của Đa-vít / dòng dõi Đa-vít | High, per baseline david/messiah/seed_of_david entries. |
| Suffering Servant/Passover Lamb | Isaiah 53:7; Exodus 12:1–13 | 5:6,9,12 (“Lamb… slain”); throughout as ἀρνίον | Chiên Con | Critical, per Semantic Analysis. |
| Danielic Son of Man | Daniel 7:13–14 | 1:13; 14:14 | Con Người | High. |
| Conquering ruler (Psalm 2) | Psalm 2:6–9 | 2:26–27; 12:5; 19:15 | cây gậy sắt (rod of iron) | High. |
| Root/offspring of Jacob (Balaam’s oracle) | Numbers 24:17 | 22:16 (“bright morning star”) | sao mai sáng chói | Medium. |
Consistency rule: Every messianic title above must be rendered identically at every occurrence throughout Revelation, and must match the baseline Romans renderings for messiah (Đấng Mê-si-a), david (Đa-vít), and seed_of_david (dòng dõi Đa-vít) wherever those exact terms recur.
Part 3 — Typological Correspondences
| Type (OT) | Antitype (Revelation) | Theological Significance | Vietnamese Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Passover lamb (Exodus 12) | The Lamb slain (Revelation 5:6,9,12; throughout) | Christ’s atoning death delivers God’s people from judgment, as the Passover lamb’s blood delivered Israel from the plague of death | Chiên Con — Critical; central to Worship of the Lamb doctrine. |
| Eden and the tree of life (Genesis 2–3) | The New Jerusalem’s tree of life (Revelation 2:7; 22:2,14,19) | The end of the story restores and surpasses the beginning — Paradise regained, curse reversed | cây sự sống / sự rủa sả (curse); ties New Heaven and New Earth doctrine to the whole canon’s opening chapters. |
| The wilderness Tabernacle / Solomon’s Temple (Exodus 25–40; 1 Kings 6–8) | God’s dwelling (“tabernacling”) with his people (Revelation 21:3); the New Jerusalem needing no temple (21:22) | The mediated, tent-and-temple presence of God is fulfilled in unmediated, permanent presence | sẽ ở cùng (đóng trại giữa) — High; connect to baseline incarnation language (Ngôi Lời trở nên xác thịt, John 1:14). |
| The Exodus plagues (Exodus 7–12) | The trumpet and bowl judgments (Revelation 8–9, 16) | God’s judgment on a hardened, idolatrous world-power repeats the pattern of Egypt’s judgment, now on a cosmic/final scale | No direct new risk; teach as deliberate typological echo. |
| The Exodus/Red Sea deliverance and Song of Moses (Exodus 14–15) | The saints’ deliverance and the Song of Moses and the Lamb (Revelation 15:2–4) | Final deliverance is the fulfillment and surpassing of the first great OT deliverance | bài ca của Môi-se và bài ca của Chiên Con — Medium. |
| Babylon and its fall (Isaiah 13–14; Jeremiah 50–51) | Babylon the great and its fall (Revelation 17–18) | The paradigmatic God-opposing empire of the OT becomes the pattern-name for every subsequent God-opposing world-system | Ba-by-lôn lớn — High; must not be narrowly identified with a single ancient or modern nation. |
| Daniel’s four beasts (Daniel 7) | The beast from the sea (Revelation 13) | The final, climactic embodiment of the successive God-opposing empires Daniel foresaw | con thú — Critical. |
| Ezekiel’s temple-city vision (Ezekiel 40–48) | The New Jerusalem’s dimensions, gates, and glory (Revelation 21) | The prophetic blueprint of restored worship and God’s presence, now finally and fully realized | Giê-ru-sa-lem mới — Critical. |
| Genesis 3:15’s serpent-crushing promise | The dragon’s final defeat (Revelation 12; 20:10) | The very first gospel promise in Scripture (the protoevangelium) reaches its complete fulfillment | con rồng — Critical; highest cultural-collision severity in the book, per Semantic Analysis. |
Part 4 — Parallels to the Romans Curriculum
Because both curricula share this translation memory and language package, the following parallels require deliberate rendering consistency between the Revelation and Romans materials:
| Romans Passage/Doctrine | Revelation Passage/Doctrine | Shared Theological Ground | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Romans 10:9 (“Jesus is Lord” — Đức Chúa Giê-xu là Chúa) | Revelation 17:14; 19:16 (“King of kings and Lord of lords” — Vua của các vua, Chúa của các chúa); Revelation 22:20 (“Come, Lord Jesus!”) | Christ’s exclusive Lordship is the salvation-confession in Romans and the consummation-confession in Revelation | Chúa must be rendered identically in both curricula (baseline lord entry). The three Revelation occurrences above must be treated with the same cross-document consistency priority the baseline assigns Romans 10:9. |
| Romans 8:28–39 (Assurance of Salvation; nothing can separate) | Revelation 21:4 (no more death/mourning/crying/pain); Revelation 12:11 (overcoming by the blood of the Lamb) | Both passages ground final assurance in Christ’s finished, decisive work, not in an uncertain outcome | Reuse baseline providence (sự quan phòng của Đức Chúa Trời) and salvation (sự cứu rỗi) exactly; both curricula must present assurance as resting on God’s character and Christ’s work, never karma-adjacent uncertainty. |
| Romans 8:15,23 (adoption; “Abba, Father”) | Revelation 21:7 (“I will be his God and he will be my son”) | Both texts use the covenant sonship formula (2 Samuel 7:14 lineage) to describe believers’ filial standing | Reuse baseline adoption (sự làm con nuôi) and father (Cha) exactly; both must be taught with the baseline’s explicit caution against collapsing sonship into Confucian filial-duty hierarchy (hiếu). |
| Romans 6:1–11 (union with Christ; dead to sin, alive to God) | Revelation 20:4–6 (the first resurrection); Revelation 21:1–8 (new creation life) | Both texts ground the believer’s new life in participation in Christ’s own death/resurrection pattern | Reuse baseline resurrection (sự sống lại) exactly across both curricula; never đầu thai/luân hồi in either. |
| Romans 1:16–17 (the gospel as God’s saving power; thesis statement) | Revelation 14:6 (“eternal gospel”); Revelation 22:17 (open invitation, “let the one who is thirsty come”) | Both anchor the gospel’s universal offer in God’s own power/initiative, not human achievement | Reuse baseline gospel (Tin Lành) and power_of_god (quyền năng của Đức Chúa Trời) exactly. |
| Romans 3:23; 10:12–13 (universal accountability and universal offer, “no distinction”) | Revelation 7:9 (multitude from every nation); Revelation 22:17 (the open, unqualified invitation) | The Romans thesis of universal human need met by a universally-offered gospel reaches its narrative fulfillment in Revelation’s multinational worship scene | Reuse baseline gentiles (dân ngoại); apply the same “do not soften into a graded/karmic framework” validation rule from the AI Requirements document to both curricula. |
| Romans 3:24–25 (grace, propitiation) | Revelation 21:6; 22:17 (“without price,” δωρεάν); Revelation 22:21 (closing grace-benediction) | Both curricula ground final salvation explicitly in unmerited grace, contrasted with merit/reciprocal-debt frameworks | Reuse baseline grace (ân điển) exactly; preserve the merit-contrast (against phước đức/công đức/ơn nghĩa) at every occurrence in both curricula. |
| Romans 9–11 (Israel, the Gentiles, and God’s covenant faithfulness) | Revelation 7:4–9; 21:12–14 (144,000 of Israel’s tribes; gates named for the tribes; multinational multitude) | Both curricula affirm God’s continued faithfulness to his covenant promises to Israel while including the nations without erasing that specific promise-history | Reuse baseline israel (Y-sơ-ra-ên) exactly; teach both curricula’s Israel/Gentile material as one continuous covenant-fulfillment narrative. |
| Romans 8:26–27 (the Spirit’s intercession) | Revelation 8:3–4 (prayers of the saints as incense) | Both curricula address prayer/intercession with the same Critical-tier cultural-collision caution | Reuse baseline intercession (sự cầu thay, Critical) exactly; every occurrence in either curriculum requires the mandatory teaching note distinguishing this from ancestor petition (cầu xin tổ tiên). |
| Romans 12:1–2 (holy, living sacrifice; separation unto God’s service) | Revelation 1:6; 5:10; 20:6 (believers as priests, reigning with Christ) | Both curricula describe the believer’s set-apart identity in service to God | Reuse baseline holy (thánh) and the Separation unto God’s Service doctrine’s caution against equating this with Buddhist monastic withdrawal (xuất gia). |
Part 5 — Consolidated Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared/Repeated Citations
- Covenant formula (“I will be their God, and they will be my people” / 2 Samuel 7:14 sonship formula): render identically at every occurrence — Revelation 21:3, 21:7; consistent with baseline adoption and father entries.

- “Alpha and Omega” / “the beginning and the end” (Isaiah 41:4; 44:6): render identically at Revelation 1:8, 21:6, 22:13 — An-pha và Ô-mê-ga / là đầu tiên và cuối cùng.
- “King of kings and Lord of lords”: render identically at Revelation 17:14 and 19:16 — Vua của các vua, Chúa của các chúa; treat with Romans 10:9-level consistency priority.
- “Rod of iron” (Psalm 2:9): render identically at Revelation 2:27, 12:5, 19:15 — cây gậy sắt.
- “Book of life”: render identically at Revelation 3:5, 13:8, 17:8, 20:12, 20:15, 21:27 — sách sự sống; every occurrence carries the mandatory teaching note distinguishing it from sổ sinh tử.
- “Water/spring of life, given freely” (Isaiah 55:1): render identically at Revelation 21:6 and 22:17 — nước sự sống… nhưng không.
- “I am coming quickly”: render identically at Revelation 22:7, 22:12, 22:20 — Ta đến mau chóng; treat with Romans 8:28/10:9-level consistency priority.
- “Lake of fire… the second death”: render identically at Revelation 19:20, 20:10, 20:14–15, 21:8 — hồ lửa / sự chết thứ hai.
- Shared vocabulary with the baseline Romans translation memory (God, Lord, Jesus, Christ/Messiah, Holy Spirit, saints, holy, church, resurrection, salvation, glory, grace, faith, covenant, gentiles, kingdom of God, David, adoption, father, prophet/prophecy): every occurrence in Revenue-curriculum materials must use the exact baseline Vietnamese rendering with no deviation, per the AI Requirements’ Glossary Enforcement Priority Order.
