07 Semantic Analysis — Revelation (English → Vietnamese)
Methodology
This analysis covers the entire book of Revelation (Ἀποκάλυψις Ἰωάννου) in the original Koine Greek, chapter 1 through chapter 22. The core passage, Revelation 21:1–8, receives verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level section covering its load-bearing theological vocabulary using the same field set:
- Original (Koine Greek)
- Transliteration
- Literal meaning
- Semantic range
- English variants (as seen across major English versions)
- Contextual theological meaning (as used in Revelation)
- Vietnamese rendering & risk tier (Critical / High / Medium / Low, per the baseline risk framework)
Baseline reuse rule: Every term already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json (e.g., God, Lord, Jesus, Christ/Messiah, Holy Spirit, saints, holy, church, resurrection, salvation, glory, grace, faith, covenant, gentiles, kingdom of God, David) is reused exactly as recorded there. This document does not re-derive those renderings; it only notes new contextual senses that arise in Revelation and cites the baseline entry.
Cultural risk flag convention: Revelation raises several NEW high-collision risk categories not present in Romans, chiefly: (1) the sacred, auspicious status of the dragon (rồng) in Vietnamese national identity and folk religion, colliding directly with δράκων as a name for Satan; (2) the Buddhist/Taoist folk cosmology of multi-tiered, temporary, karmic hells (địa ngục) and an underworld ledger of deeds (sổ sinh tử), colliding with the one-time, final, non-cyclical lake of fire, second death, and book of life; (3) the Amitābha Pure Land (Tây Phương Cực Lạc) as a meritoriously-attained paradise, colliding with the New Jerusalem descending by grace; (4) ancestor/hero veneration and idol-image veneration, colliding with worship of the Lamb and the prohibition on idolatry; (5) coastal folk veneration of sea-spirits, relevant to “the sea was no more.” These are flagged throughout.
PART 1 — Core Passage: Revelation 21:1–8 (Verse-by-Verse)
Revelation 21:1
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| καινός (καινὸν… καινήν) | kainos | new (in kind/quality, not merely in time) | fresh, of a new and different order, qualitatively new vs. νέος “new in time" | "new” | Signals a new order of creation, not a repaired old one — total re-creation, the climax of the New Heaven and New Earth doctrine | trời mới / đất mới — Critical. Must not be softened into “renewed old world”; must also be clearly distinguished from ascent to the Buddhist Pure Land (Tây Phương Cực Lạc) attained through merit — this new creation descends from God to a renewed earth, it is not escaped to. |
| οὐρανός / γῆ | ouranos / gē | heaven / earth | sky-heaven, God’s dwelling; land, the physical earth | ”heaven,” “sky” / “earth,” “land” | The totality of the old created order, now passing away and replaced | trời / đất — Medium. Standard cosmological pair; risk is mainly ensuring “trời” here is not read through the folk lens of impersonal fate-Heaven (see baseline “God” note on Ông Trời). |
| ὁ πρῶτος (οὐρανὸς)… ἡ πρώτη (γῆ) | ho prōtos / hē prōtē | the first | prior, former, original | ”the first,” “the former” | The original, fallen created order that is now definitively ended | thứ nhất / trước — Low. |
| ἀπῆλθαν | apēlthan | went away, departed | to pass away, depart, be gone | ”had passed away,” “passed away,” “disappeared” | Definitive, completed departure of the old order — irreversible, not cyclical | đã qua đi / biến mất — Medium. Must convey finality, not a phase in an ongoing cosmic cycle (contrast Buddhist kalpas). |
| θάλασσα | thalassa | sea | the sea (literal); symbolically: chaos, the abyss, the origin of the beast (13:1), separation, threat | ”sea” | Symbolic elimination of the last locus of chaos, evil’s origin, and relational separation — not a literal geography claim only | biển — High. Vietnamese coastal folk religion includes sea-spirit veneration (e.g., cá Ông/whale-spirit cults, Bà Thủy); teaching must clarify this is apocalyptic symbol for the end of chaos/threat/separation from God, not a statement about literal oceans or a contest with folk sea-deities. |
Revelation 21:2
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| πόλις ἡ ἁγία | polis hē hagia | the holy city | a set-apart, consecrated city | ”holy city” | Reuses baseline holy (thánh, High) — the city itself is set apart to God, not merely architecturally impressive | thành thánh — High (per baseline “holy” entry). |
| Ἰερουσαλὴμ καινή | Ierousalēm kainē | new Jerusalem | the eschatological, heavenly capital replacing/fulfilling the earthly city | ”new Jerusalem,” “New Jerusalem” | The consummated dwelling of God with his redeemed people — the goal of redemptive history, ties Sovereignty of God over History doctrine | Giê-ru-sa-lem mới — Critical. Must not be flattened into a generic “heavenly paradise” interchangeable with the Pure Land; it is specifically God’s people gathered under the covenant promises to Israel, now fulfilled and expanded to all nations. |
| καταβαίνουσαν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ | katabainousan ek tou ouranou apo tou theou | coming down out of heaven from God | descent, arrival from above, divine origin and initiative | ”coming down out of heaven from God” | Directionality is decisive: God’s action comes down to his people; salvation and the new world are given, not climbed to by merit or ascended to by enlightenment | từ trời, từ Đức Chúa Trời mà xuống — Critical. This downward direction is the central corrective against any merit-based ascent framework (Buddhist rebirth toward the Pure Land, karmic advancement toward higher realms). |
| νύμφη | nymphē | bride | a woman betrothed/married; symbolically, the covenant people prepared for consummated union | ”bride,” “wife” | The Church/New Jerusalem as Bride of Christ — union secured by grace, prepared by God, not earned | cô dâu — Critical. Directly carries the Church as Bride of Christ doctrine; must not be assimilated to the Confucian marriage pattern in which a bride is absorbed into her husband’s family’s ancestor-worship duties (thờ cúng tổ tiên) — here the Bride’s identity and glory come from her Bridegroom’s grace and are given, not owed in return. |
| κεκοσμημένην | kekosmēmenēn | having been adorned, decorated | to order, adorn, beautify | ”adorned,” “prepared” | The Church’s beauty is Christ-given, prepared by grace, not self-achieved merit | được trang sức / được sửa soạn trang điểm — High. |
Revelation 21:3
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| θρόνος | thronos | throne | seat of royal/divine authority | ”throne” | The seat from which God’s sovereign, authoritative word issues — ties Sovereignty of God over History doctrine | ngai — Medium. Established Vietnamese Bible term for divine/royal authority; low collision but should be consistently distinguished from an ordinary royal court image so its full theological weight (God’s sovereign rule over history) is not lost. |
| σκηνή / σκηνόω | skēnē / skēnōsei | tent, tabernacle / will tabernacle, will dwell | dwelling, encampment; God’s presence pitching a tent among his people (echoes the wilderness Tabernacle and John 1:14’s “the Word became flesh and dwelt [ἐσκήνωσεν] among us”) | “dwelling place… he will dwell,” “tabernacle… will tabernacle,” “he will live with them” | The final, permanent, unmediated presence of God with his people — the fulfillment of the Tabernacle/Incarnation trajectory | sự ở cùng / sẽ ở cùng (đóng trại giữa) — High. Should be rendered consistently with the incarnation language already anchored in baseline (Ngôi Lời trở nên xác thịt, John 1:14) so learners connect this final dwelling to Christ’s first dwelling among humanity. |
| λαός (λαοὶ αὐτοῦ) | laos | people | a covenant people, a nation belonging to someone | ”his people,” “their people” | Covenant-formula language (“they will be his people, and he will be their God”) — echoes and fulfills OT covenant promises (cf. baseline covenant, Medium) | dân sự / dân Ngài — Medium. |
| αὐτὸς ὁ θεός… αὐτῶν θεός | autos ho theos… autōn theos | God himself… their God | the covenant-formula pairing of “my/his people” and “their/my God" | "God himself will be with them as their God” | The Immanuel promise consummated — reuses baseline God (Đức Chúa Trời, Critical/High); this is the personal, covenant-making God, not the impersonal, fate-dispensing “Trời” of folk speech | chính Đức Chúa Trời sẽ ở với họ, làm Đức Chúa Trời của họ — Critical (per baseline “god” entry). |
Revelation 21:4
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| ἐξαλείψει | exaleipsei | he will wipe away, erase | to wipe out, obliterate, blot out | ”will wipe away” | Tender, decisive divine action removing sorrow completely — ties Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil | sẽ lau hết — Medium. |
| δάκρυον | dakryon | tear | tears, weeping | ”tear,” “tears” | Grief in the present fallen order, to be permanently ended | nước mắt — Low. |
| θάνατος | thanatos | death | physical death; the last enemy (1 Cor 15:26) | “death” | The definitive, final abolition of death itself in the new creation — reuses baseline resurrection doctrine trajectory (Critical) | sự chết — Critical. Must be read as the total, final undoing of death, not one stage within an ongoing cycle of death-and-rebirth (samsara); this is death’s abolition, not its temporary suspension. |
| πένθος / κραυγή / πόνος | penthos / kraugē / ponos | mourning / crying (out) / pain, distress, toil | grief-language triad describing the totality of present suffering | ”mourning,” “crying,” “pain” | The full removal of the entire complex of suffering that marked the old, fallen order | sự than khóc / tiếng kêu la / sự đau đớn — Medium. |
| τὰ πρῶτα ἀπῆλθαν | ta prōta apēlthan | the first things went away | the former state of affairs, the old order in its totality | ”the former things have passed away,” “the old order of things has passed away” | Summary statement: the entire fallen created order, with all its grief, is finally over | những sự cũ đã qua rồi — Medium. |
Revelation 21:5
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| ὁ καθήμενος ἐπὶ τῷ θρόνῳ | ho kathēmenos epi tō thronō | the one seated on the throne | a divine title for God the sovereign ruler, used repeatedly through Revelation (4:2,9-10; 5:1,7,13; 6:16; 7:10,15; 19:4; 20:11; 21:5) | “he who was seated on the throne,” “the one on the throne” | God’s active, sovereign speech from his throne — the same voice governing all of redemptive history | Đấng ngồi trên ngai — High. |
| καινὰ ποιῶ πάντα | kaina poiō panta | new-things I-make all | present tense — an ongoing/already-underway act of making all things new | ”I am making everything new,” “I make all things new,” “Behold, I make all things new” | God’s own first-person declaration of total re-creation — direct assurance for Perseverance under persecution (this hope is guaranteed, not merely hoped for) | Này, Ta làm mới lại hết thảy mọi sự — Critical. Must retain the first-person divine speech and present-tense immediacy; must not be rendered as a future hope only loosely connected to God’s own agency. |
| Γράψον | grapson | Write! | imperative — command to record | ”Write this down,” “Write it down,” “Write” | Establishes Revelation’s own status as reliable, inspired Scripture — ties Inspiration/Sovereignty of God doctrine | Hãy chép — Medium. |
| λόγοι πιστοὶ καὶ ἀληθινοί | logoi pistoi kai alēthinoi | words faithful and true | trustworthy, reliable, and genuine/real (not counterfeit) | “these words are trustworthy and true,” “faithful and true” | The certainty of God’s promise of final restoration — grounds Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil | những lời này là trung tín và chân thật — High. Note: πιστός here reuses the root of baseline faith (đức tin); “trung tín” (faithful/trustworthy) should not be confused with đức tin (personal trust) but is drawn from the same word-family and should be taught as connected — these are words worthy of the same trust believers place in Christ. |
Revelation 21:6
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| Γέγοναν | gegonan | It has happened / it is done | perfect tense — a completed, settled state with ongoing effect | ”It is done!,” “It has come to pass,” “It is finished” | Echoes Christ’s cross-word “It is finished” (John 19:30, τετέλεσται) — God’s redemptive plan is now brought to its consummation | Xong rồi! / Đã hoàn thành! — High. |
| Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ | Alpha kai to Ō | Alpha and Omega | first and last letters of the Greek alphabet — a merism for total comprehensiveness | ”the Alpha and the Omega” | Christ’s/God’s title of absolute eternality and sovereignty over all history, echoing Rev 1:8, 1:17, 22:13 — ties Sovereignty of God over History | An-pha và Ô-mê-ga — Low (transliterated proper term; must remain consistent with its use in 1:8 and 22:13). |
| ἡ ἀρχὴ καὶ τὸ τέλος | hē archē kai to telos | the beginning and the end | origin and consummation; source and goal | ”the beginning and the end” | Restates Alpha/Omega in plain Greek — God/Christ as source and goal of all history | là đầu tiên và cuối cùng — Low. |
| διψῶντι | dipsōnti | to the one thirsting | physical/spiritual thirst as a picture of need and desire | ”to the thirsty” | Anyone who recognizes spiritual need/longing — universal offer, ties Universal Scope of the Gospel (baseline High) | cho kẻ khát — Medium. |
| πηγῆς τοῦ ὕδατος τῆς ζωῆς | pēgēs tou hydatos tēs zōēs | spring/fountain of the water of life | the source of life-giving water, echoing Isaiah 55, John 4 and 7 | ”the spring of the water of life,” “the fountain of the water of life” | The eternal life God freely gives, sourced in himself, not attained through ritual purification or accumulated merit | suối nước sự sống — High. Must be distinguished from the jeweled ponds/rivers of the Pure Land attained through meritorious rebirth; this water is given freely by the sovereign God, not reached by the seeker’s own progress. |
| δωρεάν | dōrean | freely, as a gift, without payment | gratuitously, without cost or merit | ”without payment,” “freely,” “as a gift” | Grace-language: salvation is a free gift, echoes baseline grace (ân điển, High/Critical) | nhưng không / cách nhưng không — High. Must preserve the explicit contrast with merit-purchase (phước đức, công đức) already flagged in the baseline Grace entry. |
Revelation 21:7
ὁ νικῶν κληρονομήσει ταῦτα, καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτῷ θεὸς καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι υἱός.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| ὁ νικῶν | ho nikōn | the one conquering/overcoming | victor, one who prevails through struggle | ”the one who conquers,” “he who overcomes,” “the one who is victorious” | The believer who perseveres in faith and faithful witness through persecution to the end — ties Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution directly; recurs at the close of each of the seven letters (ch. 2–3) and in 12:11 (“they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb”) | kẻ đắc thắng — High. Must be taught as victory secured through union with Christ and empowered by his blood/testimony (12:11), not self-achieved spiritual attainment analogous to Buddhist self-liberation through practice and insight (cf. baseline “salvation” Critical note). |
| κληρονομήσει | klēronomēsei | will inherit | to receive as an heir, a legal/familial right of inheritance | ”will have this heritage,” “will inherit these things,” “will inherit all this” | The overcomer’s reward is inheritance within God’s family, not wages earned — connects to baseline adoption doctrine (High) | sẽ được hưởng làm cơ nghiệp — High. |
| ἔσομαι αὐτῷ θεός… αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι υἱός | esomai autō theos… autos estai moi huios | I will be to him God… he will be to me a son | covenant sonship formula, echoing 2 Samuel 7:14 (the Davidic covenant) now applied to every overcoming believer | ”I will be his God and he will be my son” | Individual, filial adoption into God’s own family — direct extension of baseline adoption (sự làm con nuôi, High) and father (Cha, High) entries | Ta sẽ là Đức Chúa Trời của người, và người sẽ là con Ta — High. As in baseline’s adoption note, this sonship must be taught as grounded in grace and intimacy, not primarily the hierarchical obligation pattern of Confucian filial duty (hiếu). |
Revelation 21:8
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| δειλοῖς | deilois | to the cowardly | timid, fearful, lacking courage (specifically: to confess/persevere in faith) | “cowardly,” “fearful,” “the fainthearted” | Failure to persevere in faithful witness under pressure — the negative counterpart to “the one who overcomes” in v.7 | kẻ nhút nhát — Medium. |
| ἀπίστοις | apistois | to the unbelieving, faithless | lacking πίστις (faith); untrustworthy or without trust in God | ”faithless,” “unbelieving” | Those without saving trust in Christ — direct antonym of baseline faith (đức tin, Medium) | kẻ chẳng tin / vô tín — High. Must clearly signal absence of the very đức tin defined in the baseline, not merely “unreliable people.” |
| ἐβδελυγμένοις | ebdelygmenois | to the detestable, abominable ones | morally repulsive, ritually/morally defiling (LXX background: idolatrous, unclean practice) | “detestable,” “vile,” “abominable” | Those whose conduct is morally repugnant to God, often associated with idolatrous practice in OT usage | kẻ đáng gớm ghiếc — Medium. |
| φονεῦσι | phoneusi | to murderers | those who unlawfully kill | ”murderers” | Violation of the sanctity of human life | kẻ giết người — Low. |
| πόρνοις | pornois | to the sexually immoral | those engaging in porneia — sexual immorality broadly, including a frequent symbol for spiritual unfaithfulness/idolatry (cf. ch. 17’s “the great harlot”) | “the sexually immoral,” “fornicators” | Both literal sexual sin and, by the book’s own symbolism, spiritual unfaithfulness to God | kẻ gian dâm — Medium. |
| φαρμακοῖς | pharmakois | to sorcerers | those who practice pharmakeia — magic, sorcery, potion-based occult practice | ”sorcerers,” “those who practice magic arts” | Occult manipulation of spiritual power apart from and against God | thuật sĩ / kẻ dùng tà thuật — High. Direct collision risk with lingering Vietnamese folk practices of consulting thầy pháp/phù thủy (sorcerers/shamans) and using bùa chú (charms); needs explicit teaching that such practice, not merely “fortune-telling” (cf. baseline thầy bói note under “prophet”), is here classed with idolatry and excluded from the new creation. |
| εἰδωλολάτραις | eidōlolatrais | to idolaters | those who worship images/idols | ”idolaters” | Direct violation of exclusive worship due to God alone — ties Worship of the Lamb doctrine by negative contrast | kẻ thờ hình tượng — High. Given the prevalence of image and statue veneration in Vietnamese Buddhist and folk-temple practice (including images placed on ancestor altars), this term requires pastoral sensitivity alongside doctrinal clarity, consistent with the AI Requirements’ sensitivity guidance on family/ancestor themes. |
| ψευδέσιν | pseudesin | to liars | those who speak falsehood | ”liars,” “all who love and practice falsehood” | Total moral seriousness of falsehood before a God of truth (cf. v.5’s “words faithful and true”) | kẻ nói dối — Low. |
| μέρος | meros | portion, share, lot | an allotted share or destiny | ”portion,” “share,” “lot” | Their assigned final destiny — grimly contrasted with the overcomer’s “inheritance” (κληρονομήσει) in v.7 | phần — Low. |
| λίμνη καιομένη πυρὶ καὶ θείῳ | limnē kaiomenē pyri kai theiō | lake burning with fire and sulfur | apocalyptic image of final, everlasting judgment (cf. Genesis 19’s Sodom, Isaiah 34) | “the lake of burning sulfur,” “the fiery lake of burning sulfur,” “the lake that burns with fire and brimstone” | Final, decisive, unending judgment reserved for the unrepentant — recurs at 19:20, 20:10, 20:14-15 | hồ có lửa và diêm sinh cháy bừng bừng (hồ lửa) — Critical. Must be taught as distinct from the Vietnamese Buddhist/Taoist folk cosmology of multiple, temporary hells (địa ngục) that function as a purgative stage within an ongoing cycle of rebirth governed by karma. The lake of fire is final and non-cyclical: there is no subsequent rebirth or escape from it. |
| ὁ θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος | ho thanatos ho deuteros | the second death | final, eternal separation from God following bodily death and the resurrection/judgment (cf. 20:14) | “the second death” | The ultimate, irreversible spiritual death of the unrepentant, contrasted with the “first resurrection” (20:5-6) reserved for believers | sự chết thứ hai — Critical. Same tier as baseline salvation and resurrection: this must never be framed as one stage of an ongoing cycle of death-and-rebirth; it is the terminal, unrepeatable judgment outcome for those outside Christ. |
PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 — Prologue, Vision of the Glorified Christ
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| ἀποκάλυψις | apokalypsis | unveiling, uncovering | disclosure of what was hidden; the book’s title and genre-marker | ”revelation,” “the Revelation” | God’s disclosure of Christ’s person and the future course of history — grounds the Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine: this is revealed truth given in symbol, not human speculation | sự mặc thị — Medium. Standard Vietnamese Bible term (used as the book’s title, Khải Huyền); low collision but should be anchored as divine disclosure, not esoteric personal enlightenment. |
| μαρτυρία / μάρτυς | martyria / martys | testimony / witness | legal/eyewitness testimony; in Revelation increasingly linked to testimony maintained under threat of death (giving rise to the later sense “martyr”) | “testimony,” “witness” / “witness(es)“ | Faithful proclamation of the truth about Jesus, maintained even at the cost of life — central to Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution | lời chứng / chứng nhân — High. Distinguish carefully from “người tử đạo” (one who dies for the faith, used for later occurrences where witnesses are killed, e.g., 6:9, 11:7, 17:6) and from secular/political martyr-veneration categories familiar in Vietnamese culture (e.g., liệt sĩ, fallen national heroes venerated at memorial shrines) — biblical witness is testimony to Christ specifically, not to nation or cause. |
| Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ (1:8) | Alpha kai to Ō | Alpha and Omega | see 21:6 above | ”the Alpha and the Omega” | First occurrence of this title, establishing it for reuse at 21:6 and 22:13 | An-pha và Ô-mê-ga — Low. |
| παντοκράτωρ | pantokratōr | ruler of all, all-powerful one | absolute sovereign power; a divine title (LXX rendering of God as “Lord of hosts/Almighty”) | “the Almighty” | God’s total, unopposed sovereignty over history — ties Sovereignty of God over History doctrine | Đấng Toàn Năng — Medium. |
| θρόνος | thronos | throne | see 21:3 above | ”throne” | First of many throne-references establishing the central heavenly-court setting of the whole book | ngai — Medium. |
| τὰ ἑπτὰ πνεύματα (1:4) | ta hepta pneumata | the seven spirits | a symbolic (not numerically literal) depiction of the Holy Spirit in the fullness/completeness of his work before God’s throne | ”the seven spirits” | The one Holy Spirit represented sevenfold as a symbol of completeness — NOT seven separate spirit-beings | bảy Thánh Linh — Critical. Must never default to the bare word “thần” (forbidden per baseline Holy Spirit entry, which prohibits bare “thần linh” — the broad Vietnamese folk category of spirits/local deities). Every occurrence requires a teaching note: this is the one Đức Thánh Linh, in his complete, sevenfold-symbolized fullness — not a folk pantheon of spirits. |
| υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου | huios anthrōpou | son of man | Danielic/messianic self-designation (Daniel 7:13) denoting the glorified, universally-authoritative figure | ”son of man,” “one like a son of man” | Christ’s exalted, Daniel-7 authority over history and judgment — feeds directly into the Return and Reign of Christ doctrine | Con Người — High. Must be anchored to its Daniel 7 background so it is not misread as a mere statement of ordinary humanity. |
| ἱερεῖς (1:6, “made us… priests”) | hiereis | priests | those who mediate access to God through sacrifice/service | ”priests” | Every believer’s priestly identity and access to God through Christ | thầy tế lễ / chức tế lễ — High. Must be distinguished from Buddhist monastic clergy (thầy tu, sư) and from folk ritual specialists (thầy cúng) who mediate between worshippers and spirits/ancestors; the priesthood in view is every believer’s direct access to God through Christ’s finished work, not a ritual-mediating professional class. |
| ἐκκλησίαι (αἱ ἑπτὰ ἐκκλησίαι) | ekklēsiai | churches | plural local congregations — reuses baseline church (Hội Thánh, Medium) | “the seven churches” | Concrete, local, historical congregations addressed by name — establishes the pastoral, historical grounding for chapters 2–3 | các Hội Thánh (bảy Hội Thánh) — Medium, per baseline. |
| πρωτότοκος τῶν νεκρῶν (1:5) | prōtotokos tōn nekrōn | firstborn of the dead | first and preeminent one raised, guaranteeing others’ resurrection | ”the firstborn from the dead,” “firstborn of the dead” | Extends baseline resurrection (sự sống lại, Critical): Christ’s resurrection is the pattern and guarantee of believers’ own bodily resurrection | Đấng sinh đầu tiên từ trong kẻ chết — Critical, per baseline resurrection entry. |
Chapter 2 — Letters to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| μετανοέω | metanoeō | to change one’s mind, repent | a decisive turning from sin back to God | ”repent” | Recurring call throughout the seven letters — the necessary response to Christ’s warning and grace | ăn năn — Medium. |
| ὁ νικῶν | ho nikōn | the one who overcomes | see 21:7 above | ”the one who overcomes/conquers” | First of seven repeated promises to “the one who overcomes,” establishing the term for reuse through the whole book | kẻ đắc thắng — High, per note at 21:7. |
| ξύλον τῆς ζωῆς | xylon tēs zōēs | tree of life | Edenic tree, restored access to eternal life | ”tree of life” | Reversal of the Genesis exclusion from Eden — anticipates ch. 22 | cây sự sống — Medium. |
| θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος (2:11) | thanatos ho deuteros | second death | see 21:8 above; first occurrence | ”the second death” | First mention establishing the term reused at 20:6, 14; 21:8 | sự chết thứ hai — Critical, per note at 21:8. |
| μάννα κεκρυμμένον | manna kekrymmenon | hidden manna | wilderness provision imagery repurposed as an eschatological reward | ”hidden manna” | God’s sustaining provision for the faithful overcomer | ma-na giấu kín — Low. |
| ψῆφος λευκή | psēphos leukē | white stone/pebble | ancient token of acquittal, membership, or reward | ”white stone” | A personal token of belonging and vindication given to the overcomer | hòn sỏi trắng — Low. |
| συναγωγὴ τοῦ Σατανᾶ | synagōgē tou Satana | synagogue of Satan | a hostile religious assembly opposing the true faith, aligned with Satan | ”synagogue of Satan” | Warning that religious opposition, not only pagan persecution, can be satanically aligned | nhà hội của Sa-tan — Medium. |
| ῥάβδος σιδηρᾶ | rhabdos sidēra | iron rod/scepter | image of decisive, unbreakable royal rule (Psalm 2:9) | “rod of iron” | Christ’s coming, unbreakable rule over the nations — ties Return and Reign of Christ | cây gậy sắt — Medium. |
| ἀστὴρ ὁ πρωϊνός (2:28) | astēr ho prōinos | morning star | first occurrence of a title later applied to Christ himself (22:16) | “morning star” | A reward-image later revealed to be Christ’s own self-designation | sao mai — Medium. |
Chapter 3 — Letters to Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| βιβλίον/βίβλος τῆς ζωῆς | biblion/biblos tēs zōēs | book/scroll of life | the divine registry of those granted eternal life | ”book of life” | God’s sovereign, gracious record of the redeemed — first occurrence, reused at 13:8, 17:8, 20:12,15, 21:27 | sách sự sống — Critical. Direct collision risk with the Taoist/folk-Buddhist “sổ sinh tử” (register of life and death) kept by the underworld bureaucracy (Diêm Vương) and updated by karmic merit/demerit. Requires explicit teaching: this book records those graciously given eternal life through the Lamb (13:8), not a ledger of deeds determining reincarnation. |
| κλεὶς Δαυίδ (3:7) | kleis Dauid | key of David | authority over the Davidic covenant promises, held by Christ | ”key of David” | Christ’s exclusive authority to open/close access to God’s kingdom, fulfilling the Davidic covenant (reuse baseline david, Medium) | chìa khóa của Đa-vít — Medium, per baseline David entry. |
| θύρα ἀνεῳγμένη | thyra aneōgmenē | open door | opportunity for access/ministry, or access to God’s presence | ”open door” | God-given opportunity that no one can shut | cửa đang mở — Low. |

Chapter 4 — The Throne Room Vision
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| ἄξιος | axios | worthy | deserving, fitting, of due weight | ”worthy” | The ground of legitimate worship — only God (and, in ch. 5, the Lamb) is worthy of worship | đáng — Medium. |
| πρεσβύτεροι (εἴκοσι τέσσαρες) | presbyteroi | elders | representative heavenly worship-leaders (24), likely representing the redeemed people of both covenants | ”elders” | Heavenly worship-leaders modeling perpetual adoration of God — ties Worship of the Lamb doctrine | các trưởng lão — High. Distinguish from Confucian ancestor/elder veneration (kính lão, thờ cúng tổ tiên); these elders are themselves worshippers directing all praise to God, never objects of veneration in their own right. |
| ζῷα (τὰ τέσσαρα ζῷα) | zōa | living creatures | four symbolic creatures (echoing Ezekiel 1, Isaiah 6) representing the whole created order’s worship | ”living creatures” | The entirety of creation joining in ceaseless worship of the Creator | các sinh vật (bốn sinh vật) — Medium. |
| προσκυνέω | proskyneō | to bow down, worship | physical prostration signifying submission and adoration | ”worship” | The defining act of the throne-room scene, reserved exclusively for God (and the Lamb, ch. 5) — first major occurrence of the term central to the Worship of the Lamb doctrine | thờ phượng — High. “Thờ” is the same root used in Vietnamese for ancestor worship (thờ cúng tổ tiên) and folk-temple worship (thờ thần); every occurrence must be anchored as exclusive worship due to God and the Lamb alone, explicitly contrasted with both ancestor veneration and (later, ch.13) worship of the beast. |
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| ἀρνίον | arnion | little lamb | Christ’s dominant Christological title in Revelation (used ~28 times), pairing sacrificial gentleness with conquering kingship | ”the Lamb” | The central image of the whole book: the slain-yet-reigning Lamb, uniting the Return and Reign of Christ, Worship of the Lamb, and Judgment doctrines | Chiên Con — Critical. Established Vietnamese Bible term; must be capitalized consistently as a divine title throughout, and must never be flattened into a generic reference to livestock or a mere congregant (“con chiên” as a common Vietnamese Christian self-designation for “a believer” must not be confused with this specific Christological title). |
| ἐσφαγμένον | esphagmenon | having been slaughtered/slain | violent, sacrificial death | ”who was slain,” “as though it had been slain” | The Lamb’s atoning death is permanently visible even in his exaltation — atonement and enthronement are inseparable | đã bị giết — High. |
| ῥίζα Δαβίδ / λέων ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ἰούδα | rhiza Dabid / leōn ek tēs phylēs Iouda | root of David / lion from the tribe of Judah | messianic titles rooting Christ’s kingship in the Davidic and Judahite promises | ”the Root of David,” “the Lion of the tribe of Judah” | Reuses baseline messiah (Đấng Mê-si-a, High) and david (Đa-vít, Medium) — Christ’s kingship fulfills specific OT covenant promises | rễ của Đa-vít / sư tử của chi phái Giu-đa — High, per baseline messiah/david entries. |
| ᾆσμα καινόν | asma kainon | new song | a fresh hymn of praise composed for a new, decisive act of God | ”new song” | Worship responding specifically to the Lamb’s redemptive achievement | bài ca mới — Low. |
| βιβλίον ἑπτασφράγιστον | biblion heptasphragiston | scroll sealed with seven seals | a legal document (likely a will/inheritance-deed or covenant-title) completely secured until opened by the worthy one | ”scroll… with seven seals,” “scroll sealed with seven seals” | God’s plan for history, hidden until the Lamb alone is found worthy to unveil and execute it — ties Sovereignty of God over History | cuốn sách có bảy cái ấn — Medium. |
Chapter 6 — The Opening of the First Six Seals
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| σφραγίς | sphragis | seal | a wax/clay seal securing a document; symbolically, a stage of the unfolding divine plan | ”seal” | Each seal’s breaking releases a stage of God’s sovereign, unfolding judgment on history | ấn — Medium. |
| ὀργὴ τοῦ ἀρνίου | orgē tou arniou | wrath of the Lamb | the startling pairing of the gentle, sacrificial Lamb with righteous, judicial wrath | ”the wrath of the Lamb” | The same Lamb who was slain in mercy will judge in righteous wrath — must not be softened into mere disappointment or resolved away as inconsistent with his gentleness | cơn thịnh nộ của Chiên Con — High. |
| ψυχαὶ τῶν ἐσφαγμένων (6:9) | psychai tōn esphagmenōn | souls of those slain | the souls of martyrs under the heavenly altar, crying for vindication | ”the souls of those who had been slain” | Vindication of persecuted witnesses is assured though delayed — ties Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints directly | các linh hồn của những người đã bị giết — High. |
Chapter 7 — The 144,000 and the Great Multitude
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| ἐσφραγισμένοι (οἱ ἑκατὸν τεσσεράκοντα τέσσαρες χιλιάδες) | esphragismenoi | sealed ones (144,000) | symbolic, complete number of God’s protected covenant people (12x12x1000) | “the 144,000,” “those who were sealed” | God’s sovereign protection/ownership of his people amid judgment — symbolic completeness, not a strict headcount | những người được đóng ấn (144.000) — Medium. |
| ὄχλος πολύς | ochlos polys | great/large crowd | an uncountable multitude from every nation | ”a great multitude,” “a great crowd” | The universal scope of salvation among all nations — reuses baseline gentiles/nations (dân ngoại, Medium) and salvation (sự cứu rỗi, Critical) | một đoàn lũ rất lớn — Medium. |
| θλῖψις (ἡ θλῖψις ἡ μεγάλη) | thlipsis | tribulation, affliction | severe pressure, suffering, persecution | ”the great tribulation,” “tribulation” | The suffering the faithful endure before final vindication — ties Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution | hoạn nạn (cơn hoạn nạn lớn) — High. |
| πλύνω ἐν τῷ αἵματι τοῦ ἀρνίου | plynō en tō haimati tou arniou | washed in the blood of the Lamb | cleansing/purification accomplished by Christ’s atoning death | ”washed… in the blood of the Lamb” | Atonement, not self-purification or accumulated merit, is the ground of the multitude’s white-robed standing | được giặt sạch trong huyết Chiên Con — High. |
| σκηνώσει (7:15) | skēnōsei | he will tabernacle/dwell | see 21:3 above; first occurrence | ”he will shelter them with his presence,” “he will spread his tent over them” | Anticipates the full consummation of God’s dwelling with his people in 21:3 | sẽ ở cùng / che phủ họ — High, per note at 21:3. |
Chapter 8 — The Seventh Seal and the First Trumpets
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| σάλπιγξ | salpinx | trumpet | a battle/announcement horn | ”trumpet” | Announces successive stages of divine judgment on the unrepentant world | kèn — Low. |
| θυμιάματα… προσευχαὶ τῶν ἁγίων (8:3-4) | thymiamata… proseuchai tōn hagiōn | incense… prayers of the saints | incense symbolizing the saints’ prayers rising before God | ”incense… the prayers of the saints,” “the prayers of God’s people” | God actively receives and acts upon his people’s prayers — reuses baseline saints (các thánh đồ, High) and connects to the Prayer and Intercession doctrine’s Critical framing (distinct from petitioning ancestors) | hương… lời cầu nguyện của các thánh đồ — High, per baseline. |
| ἄψινθος | apsinthos | wormwood | a bitter plant, symbol of the bitterness of divine judgment on creation | ”Wormwood” | Judgment poisoning the created order’s life-sustaining resources | Ngải cứu (danh từ riêng, tên vì sao) — Low. |
Chapter 9 — Trumpets Five and Six; the Abyss
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| ἄβυσσος | abyssos | bottomless, the abyss | the pit of imprisonment for demonic forces, awaiting final judgment | ”the Abyss,” “the bottomless pit” | Demonic power is bounded, temporarily restrained, and destined for final judgment — not an eternal or ultimate realm | vực sâu không đáy — High. Must be distinguished from the Vietnamese folk/Buddhist multi-tiered hell realms (địa ngục), which function within an ongoing karmic cycle; the abyss is a temporary holding place under God’s sovereign control awaiting the final, non-cyclical judgment. |
| Ἀπολλύων | Apollyōn | Destroyer | the proper name of the angel/king of the abyss (Greek rendering of Hebrew Abaddon) | “Apollyon” | A personification of destructive demonic power, subordinate to and permitted by God’s sovereign plan | A-bô-ly-ôn — Low (transliterated proper name). |
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| βιβλαρίδιον | biblaridion | little scroll | a small scroll John is told to eat, symbolizing internalized prophetic revelation | ”little scroll” | The sweetness and bitterness of receiving and proclaiming God’s prophetic word (echoes Ezekiel 3) | cuốn sách nhỏ — Low. |
| μυστήριον τοῦ θεοῦ | mystērion tou theou | mystery of God | God’s previously hidden redemptive plan, now nearing completion | ”the mystery of God” | The certainty and imminent completion of God’s sovereign plan for history — ties Sovereignty of God over History | sự mầu nhiệm của Đức Chúa Trời — Medium. Distinguish from esoteric occult “mystery” categories in folk practice; this is a plan fully known to and controlled by God, now being disclosed, not an arcane secret accessed through special initiation. |
Chapter 11 — The Two Witnesses; the Seventh Trumpet
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| μάρτυρες (οἱ δύο μάρτυρες) | martyres | witnesses (the two witnesses) | prophetic witnesses who testify and are killed for their testimony, then vindicated by resurrection | ”the two witnesses” | Faithful witness even unto death, followed by vindication — models Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution and anticipates the Resurrection/Judgment doctrines | hai người làm chứng — High, per martyria/martys note at ch.1. |
| θηρίον (11:7) | thērion | the beast | first occurrence of the book’s chief antagonist figure, here rising “from the abyss" | "the beast” | First introduction of the beast, developed fully in ch. 13 and 17 | con thú — Critical, per full note at ch.13. |
| ναὸς τοῦ θεοῦ | naos tou theou | temple of God | the sanctuary, God’s dwelling place, here measured/preserved amid judgment | ”the temple of God” | God’s ongoing protection of his true worshippers amid persecution | đền thờ của Đức Chúa Trời — Medium, connects to baseline church entry’s caution against đền/chùa language for the gathered people, though here it refers to the literal/symbolic sanctuary rather than the congregation itself. |
| ἐβασίλευσεν ὁ κύριος ἡμῶν (11:15) | ebasileusen ho kyrios hēmōn | our Lord has begun to reign | the decisive declaration that earthly kingdoms have become God’s and Christ’s kingdom | ”the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord,” “he will reign for ever and ever” | The climactic thesis-statement of the Return and Reign of Christ doctrine — the certain, final transfer of all worldly authority to Christ | Nước của thế gian đã trở nên Nước của Chúa chúng ta — Critical. Reuses baseline kingdom_of_god (Nước Đức Chúa Trời, Medium) and lord (Chúa, High); this verse should be treated with the same cross-document consistency priority the baseline gives to Romans 10:9 and 8:28, given its centrality to the Return and Reign doctrine. |
Chapter 12 — The Woman, the Male Child, and the Dragon
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| δράκων (ὁ δράκων ὁ μέγας) | drakōn | dragon (the great dragon) | serpent-monster figure, explicitly identified in 12:9 as “that ancient serpent… the Devil, and Satan" | "the dragon,” “the great dragon” | Satan’s identity and cosmic hostility toward God’s people, unveiled directly | con rồng (con rồng lớn) — Critical. Highest cultural-collision risk term in the entire book. In Vietnamese national identity and folk religion, the dragon (rồng) is a sacred, auspicious symbol — Vietnamese people traditionally identify as “con Rồng cháu Tiên” (children of the Dragon and the Fairy), and the dragon appears as an imperial emblem and a benevolent, rain-bringing, prosperity-associated creature on temple and pagoda architecture. The established Vietnamese Bible tradition nonetheless renders δράκων as “con rồng,” matching the source text’s own strong, deliberately monstrous imagery. This rendering must be retained (per the pattern set by baseline “God”/Trời — keep the established term but require heavy contextual teaching), with an explicit, mandatory teaching note at every occurrence distinguishing John’s specific apocalyptic monster-dragon (identified as Satan, 12:9) from the benevolent national/cultural dragon symbol. This is analogous in severity to the baseline’s Critical intercession/ancestor-veneration note. |
| Σατανᾶς / διάβολος (12:9) | Satanas / diabolos | Satan / the devil (slanderer) | the personal, cosmic adversary of God and his people | ”Satan,” “the devil” | Direct identification of the dragon and serpent with the personal being who opposes God — ties Sovereignty of God over History (Satan’s defeat is assured) and Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil | Sa-tan / ma quỷ — High. Must be taught as a real, personal, defeated evil being, not merely a metaphor for misfortune (as “quỷ” can be used loosely in colloquial Vietnamese speech, e.g. as a casual insult) nor as one hostile spirit among many in the folk-spirit pantheon. |
| κατήγορος | katēgoros | accuser | a legal/forensic term for one who brings charges | ”accuser” | Satan’s role as accuser is decisively ended by Christ’s victory — direct assurance for believers | kẻ kiện cáo — Medium. |
| ἐνίκησαν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸ αἷμα τοῦ ἀρνίου καὶ διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς μαρτυρίας αὐτῶν (12:11) | enikēsan auton dia to haima tou arniou kai dia ton logon tēs martyrias autōn | they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony | victory secured jointly by Christ’s atonement and the believers’ faithful testimony, even unto death (“they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death”) | “they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony” | The definitive statement uniting Worship of the Lamb, Perseverance and Faithful Witness, and the earlier ὁ νικῶν promises — victory is Christ’s achievement, appropriated through faithful witness | họ đã thắng nó bởi huyết Chiên Con và bởi lời chứng của mình — Critical. This verse should be treated with cross-document consistency priority given its role as the doctrinal hinge connecting atonement, testimony, and victory throughout the book. |
Chapter 13 — The Beast from the Sea and the Beast from the Earth
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| θηρίον (ἐκ τῆς θαλάσσης / ἐκ τῆς γῆς) | thērion | wild beast | a monstrous, empowered political/religious system opposing God, given derived (not ultimate) authority by the dragon | ”the beast” | Satanically-empowered worldly power, opposing God’s people but ultimately limited and doomed — ties Judgment of the Wicked and Sovereignty of God over History | con thú — Critical. Must be taught as a symbolic apocalyptic figure representing satanically-aligned worldly power/empire, not merely “an animal”; must not be trivialized nor collapsed into a single modern political identification without appropriate hermeneutical caution (Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine applies directly here). |
| χάραγμα | charagma | mark, stamp | an imprinted or branded mark signifying ownership/allegiance | ”the mark,” “mark of the beast” | A mark of allegiance to the beast, inversely parallel to God’s seal on his own people (7:3-4, 14:1) | dấu (dấu của con thú) — Critical. Should be kept symbolic and not forced into identification with any specific real-world technology, document, or number system without strong hermeneutical qualification; also distinguish from folk protective talismans/marks (bùa) which Vietnamese shamanic practice applies for blessing/protection — the mark of the beast is a mark of allegiance to evil, not a neutral protective charm. |
| ἀριθμὸς αὐτοῦ, ἑξακόσιοι ἑξήκοντα ἕξ (13:18) | arithmos autou, hexakosioi hexēkonta hex | his number, six hundred sixty-six | a symbolic numeral (666) associated with the beast, widely debated in interpretation | ”the number of the beast… 666” | A number of specifically human, incomplete, and rebellious character (7 being complete/divine; 6 falling short) — a case study for the Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine | con số của nó là sáu trăm sáu mươi sáu (666) — High. Requires explicit interpretive caution against speculative modern identifications. |
| εἰκὼν τοῦ θηρίου | eikōn tou thēriou | image of the beast | an idol-image of the beast that people are compelled to worship | ”the image of the beast” | Direct idolatry — compelled worship of a human/political power as if divine | hình tượng của con thú — High. Direct collision-relevance to the widespread use of images/statues in Vietnamese folk-temple and ancestor-altar practice; requires the same idolatry teaching applied to εἰδωλολάτραι in 21:8. |
| προσκυνέω τὸ θηρίον | proskyneō to thērion | to worship the beast | the beast’s demand for the worship due to God alone | ”worship the beast” | The great counterfeit — idolatrous worship inverting the true worship of the Lamb (ch. 4-5) | thờ phượng con thú — High, per προσκυνέω note at ch.4. |
Chapter 14 — The Lamb on Mount Zion; the Harvest
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| εὐαγγέλιον αἰώνιον | euangelion aiōnion | eternal gospel | the unchanging good news, proclaimed to all peoples in final judgment context | ”the eternal gospel” | The gospel’s message is timeless and universally proclaimed even as final judgment nears — reuses baseline gospel (Tin Lành, Medium) with the qualifier “eternal” | Tin Lành đời đời — Medium, per baseline. |
| Βαβυλὼν ἡ μεγάλη | Babylōn hē megalē | Babylon the great | symbolic name for the corrupt world-system opposed to God (developed fully in ch. 17-18) | “Babylon the great” | First announcement of Babylon’s fall — the certain collapse of every God-opposing human system | Ba-by-lôn lớn — High. Must be taught as a symbolic designation for the entire God-opposing world-system throughout history, not narrowly identified with the ancient or any single modern nation without careful qualification. |
| θερισμός | therismos | harvest | agricultural image of final ingathering/separation | ”harvest” | Final, decisive separation of the righteous and the wicked at the close of history | mùa gặt — Medium. |
| οἶνος τοῦ θυμοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ | oinos tou thymou tou theou | wine of the wrath of God | judgment imagery of a cup of wrath poured out in full measure | ”the wine of God’s wrath” | God’s righteous judgment against sin, fully and finally poured out — ties Judgment of the Wicked doctrine | rượu của sự thịnh nộ của Đức Chúa Trời — High. |
| ὑπομονή τῶν ἁγίων | hypomonē tōn hagiōn | patient endurance of the saints | steadfast perseverance under trial, reusing baseline saints (các thánh đồ, High) | “the patience of the saints,” “the endurance of the saints” | Direct statement of the Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution doctrine | sự nhịn nhục (bền lòng) của các thánh đồ — High, per baseline saints entry. |
Chapter 15 — The Seven Bowls of Wrath Introduced
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| ᾆσμα Μωϋσέως καὶ τὸ ᾆσμα τοῦ ἀρνίου | asma Mōuseōs kai to asma tou arniou | song of Moses and song of the Lamb | a united hymn joining Exodus deliverance (Moses) and the Lamb’s redemption, reusing baseline salvation (sự cứu rỗi, Critical) | “the song of Moses… and the song of the Lamb” | Continuity between OT deliverance and NT redemption — ties Sovereignty of God over History across both Testaments | bài ca của Môi-se và bài ca của Chiên Con — Medium. |
| φιάλαι | phialai | bowls | shallow ceremonial bowls used to pour out judgment | ”bowls” | The vessels of the final series of plague-judgments before Christ’s return | các chén — Low. |
Chapter 16 — The Seven Bowls Poured Out
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| Ἁρμαγεδών | Harmagedōn | Armageddon | a symbolic place-name for the final gathering of hostile powers against God | ”Armageddon” | The climactic but ultimately futile mustering of evil powers against God’s sovereign purpose | Ha-ma-ghê-đôn — Medium. Avoid literalistic identification with a specific modern military conflict without interpretive qualification (Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine). |
| βλασφημέω | blasphēmeō | to blaspheme | to speak with contemptuous disrespect against God’s name/character | ”blasphemed,” “cursed” | The unrepentant world’s persistent, hardened rejection of God even under judgment | nói phạm đến (Đức Chúa Trời) — Medium. |
Chapter 17 — Babylon the Great Harlot
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| πόρνη ἡ μεγάλη | pornē hē megalē | the great prostitute/harlot | a personified symbol of Babylon’s corrupt religious/political-economic seduction of the nations | ”the great prostitute,” “the great harlot,” “the great whore” | Corporate spiritual unfaithfulness/idolatry personified as sexual immorality — not merely individual sexual sin | đại dâm phụ / kẻ đại gian dâm — High. Must be taught as a corporate, symbolic figure for idolatrous world-systems seducing the nations away from God, not reduced to a statement about individual sexual morality alone. |
| μυστήριον (17:5,7) | mystērion | mystery | a hidden symbolic meaning requiring angelic interpretation within the text itself | ”mystery” | The vision’s meaning is disclosed by revelation, not human speculation — models the correct method for Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | sự mầu nhiệm — Medium, per ch.10 note. |
Chapter 18 — The Fall of Babylon
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|

| θρῆνος | thrēnos | lament, dirge | a funeral song of mourning | ”lament,” “mourning” | The world’s grief at losing its idolatrous prosperity — contrasted with heaven’s rejoicing (19:1-2) | lời than vãn — Low. |
Chapter 19 — The Rider on the White Horse; the Marriage of the Lamb
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| Ἁλληλουϊά (19:1,3,4,6) | Hallelouia | Praise the Lord! | Hebrew liturgical exclamation, transliterated in Greek and English | ”Hallelujah!” | Heaven’s unrestrained, victorious praise at Babylon’s fall and Christ’s imminent reign | Ha-lê-lu-gia — Low, per AI Requirements transliteration standard. |
| γάμος τοῦ ἀρνίου | gamos tou arniou | marriage/wedding of the Lamb | the consummation of Christ’s covenant union with his redeemed people | ”the marriage of the Lamb,” “the wedding feast/supper of the Lamb” | The climactic image of the Church as Bride of Christ doctrine, anticipating the full unveiling of the Bride/New Jerusalem in ch. 21 | tiệc cưới Chiên Con — Critical. |
| Λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ (19:13) | Logos tou Theou | Word of God | a title for Christ, reusing the Johannine “Logos” also anchoring the baseline incarnation entry (Ngôi Lời trở nên xác thịt, Critical) | “the Word of God” | Christ’s identity as God’s self-revealing, personal utterance, now revealed in his conquering role | Ngôi Lời của Đức Chúa Trời — Critical, per baseline incarnation entry. |
| βασιλεὺς βασιλέων καὶ κύριος κυρίων | basileus basileōn kai kyrios kyriōn | King of kings and Lord of lords | the supreme title of absolute, exclusive sovereignty, applied to Christ (also 17:14) | “King of kings and Lord of lords” | The definitive title for the Return and Reign of Christ doctrine — Christ’s total, exclusive, universal sovereignty | Vua của các vua, Chúa của các chúa — Critical. Reuses and intensifies baseline lord (Chúa, High); this title should receive the same cross-document consistency priority as Romans 10:9. |
| λίμνη τοῦ πυρός (19:20) | limnē tou pyros | lake of fire | see full note at 21:8; first full occurrence naming the beast and false prophet’s destination | ”the lake of fire,” “the fiery lake” | The beast and false prophet’s final, non-cyclical judgment | hồ lửa — Critical, per 21:8 note. |
| ψευδοπροφήτης | pseudoprophētēs | false prophet | one falsely claiming divine authority, opposing true prophecy — reuses baseline prophet (tiên tri, Low) with negating prefix | ”the false prophet” | The beast’s religious enforcer, empowering idolatrous worship of the beast | tiên tri giả — Medium. |
Chapter 20 — The Thousand Years; the Great White Throne
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| χίλια ἔτη | chilia etē | a thousand years | a defined, bounded period of Satan’s restraint and the saints’ reign with Christ | ”a thousand years,” “the millennium” | God’s sovereign, bounded control over the entire course of history, including its final stage — the term itself should be rendered neutrally to avoid forcing a particular millennial interpretive position | một ngàn năm — High. Must be distinguished from the vast, cyclical kalpas/eons of Buddhist cosmology; this is a single, bounded, historical period under God’s direct sovereign control, not a phase in an endlessly repeating cosmic cycle. |
| ἀνάστασις ἡ πρώτη | anastasis hē prōtē | the first resurrection | extends baseline resurrection (sự sống lại, Critical) with the qualifier “first,” referring to the blessed status of those who reign with Christ | ”the first resurrection” | Assurance and vindication for those who died faithfully — a distinct, guaranteed status ahead of the final resurrection/judgment | sự sống lại thứ nhất — Critical, per baseline resurrection entry. Must not be read as implying a cycle of multiple future rebirths; “first” here marks a sequence within the single, non-repeating resurrection event, not recurring reincarnation. |
| θρόνος λευκὸς μέγας | thronos leukos megas | great white throne | the final judgment-seat scene, where the dead are judged “according to what they had done” (recorded in books) | “a great white throne” | The final, universal, individual judgment of the unsaved dead — ties Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | ngai lớn và trắng — High. |
| Ἅιδης | Hadēs | Hades | the temporary abode of the dead (following established Vietnamese Bible tradition of rendering as Âm phủ, cf. Luke 16:23) | “Hades,” “hell” (in some English versions) | A temporary holding place, itself finally cast into the lake of fire (20:14) — underscoring that Hades has no ultimate, ongoing role | Âm phủ — Critical. Direct collision with the Taoist/folk-Buddhist underworld bureaucracy (Diêm Vương’s courts, karmic ledgers, ancestor spirits residing there, possibility of transfer into a new rebirth). Requires explicit teaching: biblical Hades is a temporary intermediate state under God’s sovereignty, itself destroyed at the final judgment (20:14) — it is not an eternal or self-operating cosmic bureaucracy, nor a place from which rebirth occurs. |
Chapter 21 (verses 9–27) — The New Jerusalem Described
(Verses 1–8 receive full verse-by-verse treatment in Part 1 above; the remainder of the chapter continues the same vision.)
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| ἡ νύμφη, ἡ γυνὴ τοῦ ἀρνίου (21:9) | hē nymphē, hē gynē tou arniou | the bride, the wife of the Lamb | explicit identification of the New Jerusalem with the Bride/Wife of the Lamb | ”the bride, the wife of the Lamb” | Confirms that the entire New Jerusalem vision (21:1-22:5) is a vision of the Church as Bride of Christ, glorified | cô dâu, vợ của Chiên Con — Critical, per note at 21:2. |
| θεμέλιοι / πύλαι | themelioi / pylai | foundations / gates | twelve foundations (named for the apostles) and twelve gates (named for the twelve tribes) | “foundations… gates” | Structural symbolism uniting OT Israel and NT apostolic foundation into one people of God — ties Unity of Jews and Gentiles (baseline Medium) | các nền / các cửa — Medium. |
| τὸ ἀρνίον ὁ λύχνος αὐτῆς (21:23) | to arnion ho lychnos autēs | the Lamb is its lamp | the Lamb himself, not sun or moon, is the city’s light source | ”the Lamb is its lamp” | Christ himself as the source of all illumination/glory in the consummated kingdom — reuses baseline glory (sự vinh hiển, Medium) | Chiên Con là đèn của thành ấy — Medium. |
| δόξα τοῦ θεοῦ (21:11,23) | doxa tou theou | glory of God | reuses baseline glory (sự vinh hiển, Medium) | “the glory of God” | God’s radiant presence itself illuminates the city — no created light source is needed | sự vinh hiển của Đức Chúa Trời — Medium, per baseline. |
Chapter 22 — The River of Life; Epilogue
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Vietnamese Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| ποταμὸς ὕδατος ζωῆς / ὕδωρ τῆς ζωῆς | potamos hydatos zōēs / hydōr tēs zōēs | river of the water of life / water of life | a river flowing directly “from the throne of God and of the Lamb,” echoing Genesis 2 and Ezekiel 47 | ”the river of the water of life,” “the water of life” | Eternal life flowing directly from God/Christ’s throne — must be distinguished from the jeweled ponds and celestial rivers of the Buddhist Pure Land (Tây Phương Cực Lạc), which are reached through meritorious rebirth rather than received from a specific, personal, sovereign source | sông nước sự sống / nước sự sống — High. |
| ξύλον τῆς ζωῆς (22:2,14,19) | xylon tēs zōēs | tree of life | see ch.2 note; full restoration of Edenic access, now perpetually fruitful and healing “the nations" | "the tree of life” | Complete reversal of the Genesis 3 exclusion — universal healing available to all nations, ties Unity of Jews and Gentiles and Mission to the Nations (baseline) | cây sự sống — Medium, per ch.2 note. |
| κατάρα (22:3) | katara | curse | the Genesis 3 curse on creation | ”no longer any curse,” “there will be no more curse” | Total, final reversal of the Genesis curse — the theological bookend to the whole Bible’s storyline | sự rủa sả — Medium. |
| δοῦλοι αὐτοῦ λατρεύσουσιν αὐτῷ (22:3) | douloi autou latreusousin autō | his servants will serve/worship him | λατρεύω denotes cultic service/worship, distinct from but overlapping with προσκυνέω | ”his servants will worship him,” “his servants will serve him” | Eternal, unceasing worshipful service as the redeemed community’s final vocation — ties Worship of the Lamb doctrine | các đầy tớ Ngài sẽ hầu việc/thờ phượng Ngài — Medium. |
| ἔρχομαι ταχύ (22:7,12,20) | erchomai tachy | I am coming quickly/soon | Christ’s repeated, climactic self-announcement of his imminent return | ”I am coming soon,” “Behold, I am coming quickly,” “I am coming quickly” | The central, urgent assurance underlying the Return and Reign of Christ doctrine — must not be softened into a vague, indefinite hope | Ta đến mau chóng — Critical. This phrase, repeated three times in the closing chapter, should receive the same cross-document consistency priority the baseline gives to Romans 8:28 and 10:9. |
| μακάριος | makarios | blessed, fortunate | a state of divine favor and well-being, not mere circumstantial luck | ”blessed” | The book’s repeated beatitudes mark those who hear, keep, and are ready for Christ’s words and return | phước cho — Medium. |
| ἀστὴρ ὁ πρωϊνὸς ὁ λαμπρός (22:16) | astēr ho prōinos ho lampros | the bright morning star | Christ’s self-designation, echoing and fulfilling 2:28’s promised reward | ”the bright and morning star,” “the bright morning star” | Christ identifies himself directly with the reward-image promised to overcomers — union of Christology and Perseverance doctrines | sao mai sáng chói — Medium, per ch.2 note. |
| Ἔρχου, Κύριε Ἰησοῦ (22:20) | Erchou, Kyrie Iēsou | Come, Lord Jesus! | the Church’s climactic responsive prayer, echoing the Aramaic “Marana tha” (1 Corinthians 16:22) | “Come, Lord Jesus!” | The Church’s own heartfelt longing for Christ’s return, in direct response to his promise — the emotional and doctrinal climax of the whole book, paralleling the significance of “Jesus is Lord” in Romans 10:9 | Lạy Đức Chúa Giê-xu, xin hãy đến! — Critical. Must preserve Κύριε as Chúa (per baseline lord entry) within the direct address, and should receive the same cross-document, verbatim consistency priority as Romans 10:9-10 in the baseline. |
| χάρις (22:21) | charis | grace | reuses baseline grace (ân điển, High/Critical) exactly | ”the grace of the Lord Jesus be with all” | The book’s closing benediction grounds the entire apocalyptic vision in grace, not merit or human achievement | ân điển — Critical, per baseline. |
