11 Doctrine Analysis — Colossians

Purpose

This document maps every doctrine identified for the Colossians curriculum onto its supporting passages across the full letter (chapters 1–4), assigns the risk tier fixed in doctrine_risk_registry.json, states the specific translation risk driving that tier, and confirms the review routing. Core passage Colossians 1:15–20 is the theological anchor of the curriculum but is not the boundary of this analysis; every chapter is reviewed below, including sections that introduce no new doctrinal risk.

  • 1:3-8 — Thanksgiving (#26); Gospel (#13); Faith (#15); Christian love (supports #19, general “love” term already logged in the Core Glossary).
  • 1:9-11 — Prayer for One Another (#20, Critical); Wisdom/full knowledge terms (logged in glossary, feed doctrine #4).
  • 1:12-14 — Inheritance and Adoption (#25); Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins (#17); Kingdom Mission (#21); Sonship of Christ (#10).

  • 1:21-23 — Reconciliation through the Cross (#3) continued; Faith (#15); Gospel (#13).
  • 1:24-29 — Church as God’s People (#24); Apostleship (#23); Warning against False Teaching (mystery/ἐπίγνωσις terms feed #4); Paul’s suffering (logged in glossary as a Colossians-specific term — reviewed, High risk per glossary, folded into doctrine #4/#3 context, no separate registry doctrine needed).

Chapter 1 coverage note: every verse range contributes to at least one registry doctrine; none reviewed as doctrinally inert.

Colossians 2 (Warning against Philosophy and Empty Tradition, Fullness of Deity, Union with Christ, Freedom from Legalistic Ordinances)

  • 2:1-5 — Warning against False Teaching (#4); Mystery/full knowledge (feeds #4); Faith (#15).
  • 2:6-8 — Warning against False Teaching (#4) — philosophy, tradition of men, elemental spirits (στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου).
  • 2:9-10 — Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily (#8, Critical); Deity of Christ (#9); Christ as Head (#2).
  • 2:11-15 — Union with Christ (#5, Critical); Reconciliation through the Cross (#3) — certificate of debt (χειρόγραφον); Resurrection of Christ (#12).
  • 2:16-23 — Warning against False Teaching (#4) — worship of angels, self-made religion, shadow/substance, elemental spirits repeated; Supremacy of Christ (#1) — “why act as if you still belonged to the world.”

Chapter 2 coverage note: the letter’s densest concentration of Critical-tier syncretism risk; every subsection maps to registry doctrines #1, #3, #4, #5, or #8.

Colossians 3 (Union with Christ Applied, Old Self/New Self, Vice/Virtue Lists, Household Codes)

  • 3:1-4 — Union with Christ (#5, Critical) — “hidden with Christ,” “when Christ appears.”
  • 3:5-11 — Putting Off Old Self and Putting On New (#6, Critical); Universal Human Accountability (#18) — wrath of God, sons of disobedience; Christian Identity in Christ and Unity (#19).
  • 3:12-17 — Sainthood and Holiness (#16); Mutual Edification (#27, Low); Thanksgiving (#26); Lordship of Christ (#11) — “whatever you do, in word or deed… in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
  • 3:18-4:1 — Household Codes (#7, High) — submission, love, obedience, masters/slaves; Lordship of Christ (#11) — human-referent κύριος (chủ) vs. divine Chúa.

Chapter 3 coverage note: every subsection maps to a registry doctrine; the vice/virtue catalog (3:5, 3:8) is fully absorbed into doctrine #6 and #18, not treated as a separate low-risk item, because the covetousness-as-idolatry clause (3:5) carries High-risk syncretism potential (see glossary).

Colossians 4 (Prayer Requests, Conduct toward Outsiders, Final Greetings)

  • 4:1 — Household Codes (#7) continued (masters’ reciprocal obligation).
  • 4:2-4 — Prayer for One Another (#20, Critical) — “continue steadfastly in prayer… praying also for us”; Warning against False Teaching (#4) — “mystery of Christ.”
  • 4:5-6 — Mission/witness-adjacent conduct toward outsiders. No new registry doctrine; consistent with baseline Evangelism-family sensitivity (conduct wisely toward “outsiders,” salt/speech metaphor) — reviewed, treated as Low-risk extension of Gospel (#13) and Mutual Edification (#27), no new tier assignment needed.
  • 4:7-9 — Personal greetings/commendations (Tychicus, Onesimus). Reviewed: proper names only, follow baseline transliteration standards; no doctrinal content; automated review sufficient (consistent with Low tier conventions).
  • 4:10-14 — Personal greetings (Aristarchus, Mark, Barnabas, Justus, Epaphras, Luke, Demas). 4:12-13 specifically carries Prayer for One Another (#20, Critical) — Epaphras “always struggling for you in his prayers.” Remaining names reviewed as doctrinally inert proper-name content.
  • 4:15-16 — Church as God’s People (#24) — “the church in her house,” circulation of the letter among churches.
  • 4:17-18 — Apostleship (#23) — ministry charge to Archippus; closing benediction (Grace, #14).

Chapter 4 coverage note: greeting-heavy sections (4:7-11, 4:14) are explicitly reviewed and confirmed to carry only Low-risk proper-name and standard-farewell content, consistent with the baseline’s transliteration and Low-risk conventions; they are not silently omitted, merely noted as contributing no new doctrinal risk beyond what is already logged for #20, #23, and #24 elsewhere in the chapter.

Summary

All four chapters of Colossians have been reviewed against the 27 doctrines fixed in doctrine_risk_registry.json. No chapter or major section is unaccounted for: sections without independent doctrinal weight (proper-name greetings in ch.4) are explicitly noted as reviewed rather than omitted. The letter’s theological center of gravity — the supremacy hymn of 1:15-20 — anchors the highest concentration of Critical-tier doctrines (#1, #2, #3, #9, #10, #12, #22), but chapters 2 and 3 carry an equal or greater density of Critical-tier syncretism risk (#4, #5, #6, #8) that must receive identical human theologian review priority in Phase 2.

Critical Risk Doctrines

The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation

Vietnamese name: Quyền Tối Cao và Sự Đầy Đủ của Đấng Christ trên Muôn Vật
Key terms: image of God, firstborn of all creation, created, thrones/dominions/rulers/authorities, before all things, elemental spirits
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: εἰκών risks collapsing into hóa thân-style manifestation-among-many; πρωτότοκος risks being misread as Christ’s membership within creation as its first instance rather than his rank over it; στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου collides sharply with the Vietnamese ngũ hành (Five Elements) cosmology and territorial/nature spirits. All three require mandatory theologian notes at every occurrence.

Reconciliation through the Cross

Vietnamese name: Sự Hòa Giải qua Thập Tự Giá
Key terms: reconcile, blood of the cross, certificate of debt, peace, forgiveness of sins
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: ἀποκαταλλάσσω collides directly with the Vietnamese ritual practice of ‘hóa giải’ (appeasing offended ancestors/spirits, initiated by the living party); the direction of initiative must be reversed and taught explicitly — God acts first, unilaterally, at his own cost. χειρόγραφον (the canceled debt-certificate) collides with karmic debt (nghiệp) and filial debt (ơn nghĩa, nợ công ơn sinh thành), which are worked off gradually rather than canceled outright.

Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism

Vietnamese name: Lời Cảnh Báo về Sự Dạy Dỗ Sai Lạc và Sự Pha Trộn Tôn Giáo
Key terms: philosophy, tradition of men, elemental spirits, worship of angels, self-made religion, mystery, full knowledge
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: This doctrine concentrates the letter’s sharpest collision points — esoteric/occult hidden-knowledge traditions (huyền bí, bùa chú), Five-Elements cosmology (ngũ hành) and territorial spirits, spirit/deity veneration practices, and self-devised ascetic religious effort resonant with Buddhist merit accumulation (công đức). Each requires its own mandatory theologian note; collectively they represent the letter’s central anti-syncretism argument.

Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)

Vietnamese name: Sự Hiệp Một với Đấng Christ (Đã Chết và Được Sống Lại với Ngài)
Key terms: died with Christ, raised with Christ, hidden with Christ, buried with him in baptism
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: This doctrine extends the baseline’s forbidden-substitution guard on ‘resurrection’ into participatory, first-person language (‘you died… you were raised’). Any hint of luân hồi or đầu thai (cyclical rebirth/reincarnation) in rendering believers’ own death-and-resurrection experience would be a doctrinally catastrophic substitution, since Vietnamese Buddhist cosmology already frames personal death-and-new-life language cyclically.

Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New

Vietnamese name: Lột Bỏ Người Cũ và Mặc Lấy Người Mới
Key terms: old self, new self, put to death, renewed after the image of the Creator, covetousness is idolatry
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: Risk of collapsing this definitive, completed identity-change (accomplished in union with Christ) into a gradual Confucian self-cultivation project (đức hạnh), already flagged as a risk pattern in the baseline’s ‘righteousness’ entry. The idolatry broadening (covetousness = idolatry) also risks being read as exclusively about physical images unless explicitly connected to Vietnamese image/idol veneration practice (thờ hình tượng).

Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily

Vietnamese name: Sự Đầy Dẫy Trọn Vẹn của Thần Tính trong Đấng Christ theo Thể Xác
Key terms: fullness, deity/Godhead, dwell, bodily
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: κατοικέω and σωματικῶς together collide with Vietnamese spirit-mediumship practice (hầu đồng/lên đồng), in which a spirit temporarily and episodically possesses a medium’s body. This doctrine must be taught as God’s essential, permanent, bodily indwelling of Christ’s own nature — categorically different from temporary ritual possession — reinforcing the baseline’s Incarnation and Deity of Christ doctrines.

Deity of Christ

Vietnamese name: Thần Tính của Đấng Christ
Key terms: image of the invisible God, fullness of deity, before all things, God over all
Review routing: Human theologian

Reused from baseline (Romans 1:4, 9:5). Colossians intensifies this doctrine with εἰκών and θεότης language, both of which risk being read through the lens of a deified historical hero or an avatar-like manifestation rather than co-equal, eternal divine nature.

Sonship of Christ

Vietnamese name: Địa Vị Con của Đấng Christ
Key terms: Son of his love, his beloved Son
Review routing: Human theologian

Reused from baseline (Romans 1:4, 8:3, 8:29). Must be taught as eternal, unique Sonship, not a title claimed by a deified ancestor or folk-hero spirit.

Resurrection of Christ

Vietnamese name: Sự Sống Lại của Đấng Christ
Key terms: firstborn from the dead, raised him from the dead
Review routing: Human theologian

Reused from baseline (Romans 1:4, 6:4-5). Bodily, historical, once-for-all resurrection; never đầu thai/luân hồi.

Prayer for One Another (Intercession-Adjacent)

Vietnamese name: Sự Cầu Nguyện cho Nhau
Key terms: praying for you, wrestling in prayer, struggling on your behalf
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: Praying ‘on behalf of’ others (esp. Epaphras ‘always struggling for you in his prayers,’ 4:12) invokes the same forbidden pattern already fixed as Critical in the baseline’s Prayer and Intercession doctrine: never modeled on cầu xin tổ tiên (petitioning deceased ancestors at the family altar). Requires an explicit note distinguishing living believers’ Spirit-enabled prayer to a living, personal God from intermediation through a departed family member.

High Risk Doctrines

Christ as Head of the Church

Vietnamese name: Đấng Christ là Đầu của Hội Thánh
Key terms: head, body, church, preeminent
Review routing: Human theologian

κεφαλή (đầu) must convey organic life-source together with authority, not a merely administrative headship, and must be kept distinct from the unrelated household-code use of headship language in ch.3, which risks conflating ecclesiology with Confucian family hierarchy (tam cương) if not clearly separated.

Household Codes

Vietnamese name: Các Quy Tắc cho Gia Đình
Key terms: submit, love, obey, do not provoke, masters, slaves, human master (kyrios)
Review routing: Human theologian

Vietnamese family structure carries deep, independent Confucian hierarchical expectations (tam cương). ὑποτάσσω must be taught as qualified ‘in the Lord’ and paired inseparably with sacrificial Christlike love, not a blanket cultural endorsement. The human-referent κύριος (master) must be rendered chủ, never Chúa, to protect the baseline’s exclusive reservation of Chúa for the divine Lord.

Lordship of Christ

Vietnamese name: Quyền Làm Chúa của Đấng Christ
Key terms: Lord, in the Lord, the Lord Christ
Review routing: Human theologian

Reused from baseline (Romans 10:9). Colossians 3:22-4:1’s use of κύριος for a human master (chủ) requires careful separation from Chúa to preserve exclusive divine Lordship in every other occurrence.

Grace

Vietnamese name: Ân Điển
Key terms: grace, grace of God
Review routing: Human theologian

Reused from baseline. Unmerited favor must be distinguished from phước đức/công đức (accumulated merit) and ơn nghĩa (reciprocal-debt favor); directly relevant to Colossians’ critique of self-made religion (ἐθελοθρησκία) in ch.2.

Sainthood and Holiness

Vietnamese name: Sự Kêu Gọi Nên Thánh Đồ và Sự Thánh Khiết
Key terms: saints, holy, blameless
Review routing: Human theologian

Reused/extended from baseline. Believers are saints; not a class of deified historical heroes (như Thánh Trần) worshipped at folk temples (đền). Bare các thánh must never be used.

Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins

Vietnamese name: Sự Cứu Chuộc và Sự Tha Thứ Tội Lỗi
Key terms: redemption, forgiveness of sins
Review routing: Human theologian

ἀπολύτρωσις’s ‘price paid’ sense risks collapsing into generic rescue; ἄφεσις risks being read through an ancestral-appeasement or merit-earning lens rather than as an unearned gracious act of a personal God.

Universal Human Accountability

Vietnamese name: Trách Nhiệm của Mọi Người trước Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: wrath of God, sons of disobedience, you also once walked in these
Review routing: Human theologian

Reused from baseline. ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ is a personal, righteous, moral response of a personal God to sin; must not be flattened into impersonal karmic retribution (nghiệp báo), which operates automatically rather than through personal divine judgment.

Providence and the Sustaining Power of Christ

Vietnamese name: Sự Quan Phòng và Quyền Nắm Giữ Mọi Vật của Đấng Christ
Key terms: in him all things hold together, before all things
Review routing: Human theologian

Extends the baseline Providence doctrine (previously grounded in God the Father, Romans 8:28) to Christ himself as the personal sustaining agent of the universe; must not be rendered as an impersonal cosmic law, fate, or the Confucian/Taoist đạo (an impersonal ordering principle of the universe).

Medium Risk Doctrines

Gospel

Vietnamese name: Tin Lành
Key terms: gospel, word of truth, preached
Review routing: Native speaker review

Reused from baseline; well established as both the theological term and the common Vietnamese name for Protestantism.

Faith

Vietnamese name: Đức Tin
Key terms: faith, faith in Christ Jesus, continue in the faith
Review routing: Native speaker review

Reused from baseline; well-established term with comparatively low ambiguity risk.

Christian Identity in Christ and Unity

Vietnamese name: Danh Tính của Cơ Đốc Nhân trong Đấng Christ và Sự Hiệp Một
Key terms: in Christ, Greek and Jew, slave and free, Christ is all, and in all
Review routing: Native speaker review

Reused/extended from baseline Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine, broadened here to every ethnic and social category; identity in Christ supersedes but does not merely socially abolish inherited categories such as social status.

Kingdom Mission (Christ-Centered)

Vietnamese name: Sứ Mệnh của Nước Đức Chúa Trời (Lấy Đấng Christ Làm Trung Tâm)
Key terms: kingdom of the Son of his love, transferred us into
Review routing: Native speaker review

Reused/extended from baseline Kingdom Mission doctrine, made explicitly Christocentric; distinguish from a political or nationalist ‘nước.‘

Apostleship

Vietnamese name: Chức Sứ Đồ
Key terms: apostle, minister of this gospel
Review routing: Native speaker review

Reused from baseline; established term with low syncretism risk.

Church as God’s People

Vietnamese name: Hội Thánh là Dân Sự của Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: church, body of Christ, church in her house
Review routing: Native speaker review

Reused from baseline; a new-covenant community, not a folk temple (đền) organized around a deified hero or local spirit.

Inheritance and Adoption

Vietnamese name: Phần Cơ Nghiệp và Sự Làm Con trong Gia Đình Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: inheritance of the saints in light, reward of the inheritance
Review routing: Native speaker review

Extends the baseline Adoption doctrine’s inheritance-rights emphasis; a guaranteed grant of grace, not an earned entitlement accumulated over time.

Low Risk Doctrines

Thanksgiving

Vietnamese name: Sự Cảm Tạ
Key terms: thanksgiving, give thanks, with thankfulness
Review routing: Automated review

Reused from baseline; standard term, minimal doctrinal risk.

Mutual Edification

Vietnamese name: Sự Gây Dựng lẫn Nhau
Key terms: teaching and admonishing one another, encourage your hearts
Review routing: Automated review

Reused from baseline; building one another up in faith, minimal doctrinal risk.
