Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — 2 Peter 1–3
This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 4 (doctrine identification and risk-tiering) and Step 5 (chapter-by-chapter mapping) for the full text of 2 Peter. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: the same 17 doctrines, the same risk tiers, and the same review-routing conventions are used throughout. The core passage (2 Peter 1:16–21) anchors the Inspiration of Scripture, Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony, Deity and Sonship of Christ, and Certainty of Christ’s Return doctrines, but scope extends across all three chapters of the letter, first verse to last.
Part A — Full Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Risk | Primary Passages (2 Peter) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture | Critical | 1:19–21; 3:2; 3:16 | Denial that prophecy originates in a prophet’s own ἐπίλυσις or human will must not soften into “inspired human insight,” which would parallel Buddhist sutra-transmission-through-realization or Confucian sage-transmission. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony | High | 1:16–18 | Peter’s explicit denial of “cleverly devised myths” must remain historical/verifiable, not a private mystical or visionary experience. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Deity and Sonship of Christ | Critical | 1:1; 1:17 | The Father’s declaration “my Son, my beloved” must convey eternal, co-equal Sonship, never an honorific/adoptive title akin to a deified folk hero. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Savior Christology | High | 1:1; 1:11; 2:20; 3:2; 3:18 | ”Savior” applied jointly to God and Christ (1:1) affirms deity; must not be assimilated to a devotional helper-figure (e.g., Quan Thế Âm) operating within cyclical suffering. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption | Critical | 1:3–4 | ”Partakers of the divine nature” must not be taught as innate Phật tánh (Buddha-nature) self-realized; it is a granted status via promise and knowledge of Christ. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Growing in Christian Virtue | High | 1:3; 1:5–8 | The virtue list must be Spirit-enabled fruit added onto grace already given, not Confucian self-cultivated nhân đức (one of the Five Constant Virtues). | Human theologian |
| 7 | Divine Calling and Election | Medium | 1:10 | ”Make your calling and election sure” concerns growing assurance, not manipulating or securing an impersonal số phận/số mệnh (fixed fate). | Native speaker review |
| 8 | False Teachers and Their Judgment | High | 2:1–3; 2:10–19 | ”False teacher” must denote insiders denying Christ’s Lordship/atonement while claiming Christian authority, not mere rival religious teachers. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Certainty of Divine Judgment (OT Precedents) | High | 2:4–10a; 2:15–16 | ”Cast into Tartarus” must not import the Buddhist multi-level địa ngục tied to karmic cycle/rebirth; κρίσις must remain personal moral verdict, not nghiệp/quả báo. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Denial of Christ’s Atoning Purchase | Critical | 2:1 | ”Bought/purchased” must remain a completed, gracious, unrepayable transaction, not an ongoing debt echoing Confucian ơn nghĩa or karmic-debt logic. | Human theologian |
| 11 | The Certainty of Christ’s Return | Critical | 1:16; 1:19; 3:3–4; 3:9–10 | παρουσία (sự quang lâm) must never suggest reincarnation/rebirth or a recurring-avatar/future-Buddha pattern (e.g., Di-lặc); it is one singular historic return. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Patience of God’s Timing | High | 3:8–9; 3:15 | God’s delay must remain personal, purposeful forbearance “not wishing that any should perish,” not impersonal số trời or nghiệp slowly running its course. | Human theologian |
| 13 | The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | Critical | 3:7; 3:10; 3:12 | ”Ngày của Chúa” must remain a fixed, linear, final day, never assimilated to the Buddhist cyclical thành–trụ–hoại–không cosmology. | Human theologian |
| 14 | New Heavens and New Earth (Final Renewal) | Critical | 3:13–14 | ”Trời mới đất mới” must be the final, permanent, one-time renewal, not one stage in a recurring kalpa-cycle of cosmic destruction/re-formation. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Scripture’s Reliability Against Distortion | High | 3:15–16 | Paul’s letters placed alongside “other Scriptures” as equally authoritative; willful distortion (xuyên tạc) by bad readers must not be read as normal interpretive plurality (as with sutra commentarial traditions). | Human theologian |
| 16 | Sanctification and Holy Living in Light of Judgment | Medium | 2:21; 3:11; 3:14 | Holy conduct must remain the Spirit’s grace-rooted work, not ritual self-purification or công đức (merit accumulation) to influence outcome. | Native speaker review |
| 17 | Growth in Grace and Knowledge | Medium | 1:2–3; 3:18 | Growth must be the outworking of a status already fully granted by grace, never merit accumulation increasing standing before God. | Native speaker review |
Risk summary (matches doctrine_risk_registry.json): Critical = 7, High = 7, Medium = 3, Low = 0. Total requiring human theologian review = 14; total requiring native speaker review = 3; total automated-only = 0.
Part B — Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage
Chapter 1
| Passage | Doctrine(s) Active | Risk | Translation Risk Notes | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | Savior Christology; Deity and Sonship of Christ; (Faith, Righteousness — reused Romans terms) | High/Critical | ”Our God and Savior Jesus Christ” places Savior on both God and Christ in one clause; the grammar itself is a deity affirmation that must not be diluted into two separate referents. | Human theologian |
| 1:2 | Growth in Grace and Knowledge (opening greeting: grace/peace multiplied through knowledge) | Medium | Reused terms ân điển, sự bình an apply exactly per Romans baseline; “knowledge” here is ἐπίγνωσις (sự nhận biết), the relational-knowing sense, not γνῶσις. | Native speaker review |
| 1:3–4 | Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption; Growing in Christian Virtue (via “divine power,” “glory and virtue”) | Critical/High | Anchor verses for bổn tánh Đức Chúa Trời; must resist Phật tánh framing. “Escaped corruption” (sự hư nát) must remain moral ruin under judgment, not vô thường (impermanence). | Human theologian |
| 1:5–8 | Growing in Christian Virtue | High | Full virtue chain (faith→virtue→knowledge→self-control→perseverance→godliness→brotherly kindness→love) must read as sequential Spirit-enabled fruit, not a Confucian self-cultivation ladder. | Human theologian |
| 1:9–11 | Growing in Christian Virtue (negative case); Divine Calling and Election; Kingdom of God (reused) | High/Medium | ”Make your calling and election sure” (1:10) is the key phrase; must not read as securing an impersonal fate through effort. | Human theologian (1:10 phrase) / Native speaker (surrounding verses) |
| 1:12–15 | Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony (context-setting); “departure” (ἔξοδος) — reviewed, low risk | Low/High | 1:15’s “departure” (sự từ giã cõi đời) is a low-risk euphemism for death; carries Exodus-typology teaching value but no syncretism risk. Surrounding verses establish Peter’s approaching death as the reason for writing — reviewed, no new doctrine beyond context. | Native speaker review (low-risk term); no escalation required for 1:12-15 itself |
| 1:16–18 | Core passage. Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony; Deity and Sonship of Christ; Certainty of Christ’s Return | Critical/High | Transfiguration testimony grounds both the reliability of apostolic witness and the certainty of the future Parousia; “Majestic Glory” (Đấng Vinh Hiển Uy Nghi) is a reverent circumlocution for the Father that must retain full divine weight. | Human theologian |
| 1:19–21 | Core passage. Certainty of Christ’s Return (“morning star”); Inspiration of Scripture | Critical | 1:20-21 is the definitional inspiration-of-Scripture text: prophecy is never of the prophet’s own ἐπίλυσις nor by human will, but by being “carried along” (được…cảm động) by the Holy Spirit. This is the single highest-stakes passage in the letter for translation fidelity. | Human theologian |
Chapter 2
| Passage | Doctrine(s) Active | Risk | Translation Risk Notes | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2:1 | Denial of Christ’s Atoning Purchase; False Teachers and Their Judgment | Critical/High | ”Denying the Master who bought them” is the doctrinal center of the chapter; chuộc mua must remain a completed, gracious transaction, not a repayable debt (ơn nghĩa or karmic framing). | Human theologian |
| 2:2–3 | False Teachers and Their Judgment | High | ”Destructive heresy” (tà giáo dẫn đến sự hư mất) must be clear this is professing-insider denial of Christ, not generic non-mainstream religious identity. | Human theologian |
| 2:4–10a | Certainty of Divine Judgment (OT Precedents) | High | Fallen angels “cast into Tartarus” (quăng vào vực sâu tối tăm), the Flood, and Sodom/Gomorrah are historical precedents of one final, personal judgment — not a multi-tiered karmic hell-cosmology with possibility of rebirth. | Human theologian |
| 2:10b–16 | False Teachers and Their Judgment; Certainty of Divine Judgment (Balaam precedent) | High | Description of false teachers’ immoral conduct (tư dục, sự vô đạo) and the Balaam OT precedent; needs OT background teaching for readers with low narrative literacy. | Human theologian |
| 2:17–22 | False Teachers and Their Judgment; Sanctification and Holy Living (negative counter-example) | High/Medium | ”Freedom” (sự tự do) falsely promised while false teachers are themselves “slaves” (nô lệ) to corruption; contrasted with the positive doulos/servant self-designation in 1:1. Apostasy imagery (2:20-22) reinforces that reverting to corruption after “knowing the way of righteousness” is a real danger, not karmic backsliding. | Human theologian |
Chapter 3
| Passage | Doctrine(s) Active | Risk | Translation Risk Notes | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3:1–2 | Inspiration of Scripture (recalling “words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles”) | Critical | Reasserts the same inspiration doctrine established in 1:19-21, now linking OT prophets and NT apostles as one unified authoritative source. | Human theologian |
| 3:3–4 | Certainty of Christ’s Return; (Scoffer as a term — reused/new low-medium risk) | Critical | Scoffers’ doubt (“where is the promise of his coming?”) is rooted in moral rebellion, not honest inquiry; must not be softened into a neutral philosophical question. | Human theologian |
| 3:5–7 | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment (creation and coming judgment by God’s word) | Critical | God’s Word (lời của Đức Chúa Trời) governs both creation and the coming judgment by fire; this personal, effective divine speech must not read as impersonal cosmic law. | Human theologian |
| 3:8–10 | Patience of God’s Timing; Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | High/Critical | ”One day as a thousand years” explains apparent delay as personal, purposeful patience aimed at repentance (3:9), not impersonal fate/karma; “the day of the Lord will come like a thief” (3:10) must retain surprise-yet-certain, linear, one-time framing. | Human theologian |
| 3:11–13 | Sanctification and Holy Living in Light of Judgment; New Heavens and New Earth | Medium/Critical | Holy living “waiting for and hastening” the Day must be grace-rooted response, not merit-accumulation; “new heavens and new earth” (trời mới đất mới) is the final, permanent dwelling of righteousness, not a stage in a recurring cosmic cycle. | Human theologian |
| 3:14–16 | Sanctification and Holy Living; Scripture’s Reliability Against Distortion | Medium/High | ”Spotless and blameless” (không dấu vết, không chỗ trách được) is an ethical goal achieved through Christ; Paul’s letters placed alongside “the other Scriptures” (3:16) as equally authoritative even though willfully “twisted” (xuyên tạc) by the “untaught and unstable” — reliability of Scripture itself remains intact. | Human theologian (3:16 Scripture-reliability clause) / Native speaker (3:14 holy-living clause) |
| 3:17–18 | Growth in Grace and Knowledge; (closing doxology — reused Glory term) | Medium | Final exhortation to “grow in grace and knowledge” returns to chapter 1’s themes; must be framed as outworking of a status already granted by grace, not merit accumulation. Doxology (“to him be glory… forever”) reuses established sự vinh hiển with no new risk. | Native speaker review |

Critical Risk Doctrines
The Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture
Vietnamese name: Sự Đáng Tin Cậy và Sự Soi Dẫn của Kinh Thánh
Key terms: prophecy, scripture, private interpretation, will of man, moved by the Spirit, prophetic word confirmed
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: 1:20-21’s denial that prophecy comes from a prophet’s own ἐπίλυσις (sự giải thích riêng) or human will must not be softened into a claim that Scripture is simply inspired human insight, which would read as parallel to how Vietnamese Buddhist sutras are described as transmitted through an enlightened teacher’s own realization, or how Confucian classics are transmitted through sage tradition. The doctrine requires that God, through the Holy Spirit (Đức Thánh Linh), is the active source while human authors genuinely spoke in their own voice.
Deity and Sonship of Christ
Vietnamese name: Thần Tính và Địa Vị Con của Đấng Christ
Key terms: son of God, God the Father, majestic glory, beloved, well pleased
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: The Father’s voice declaring Christ ‘my Son, my beloved’ (2 Peter 1:17) affirms Christ’s eternal, unique, co-equal Sonship. Must never be rendered so as to suggest an honorary or adoptive title comparable to a deified ancestor or folk-hero spirit venerated at a Vietnamese đền (temple to a deified hero).
Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption
Vietnamese name: Bổn Tánh Đức Chúa Trời và Sự Thoát Khỏi Sự Hư Nát
Key terms: divine nature, partaker, corruption, lust/desire, divine power
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: ‘Partakers of the divine nature’ (θεία φύσις, bổn tánh Đức Chúa Trời) must never be taught through the lens of Phật tánh, the innate Buddha-nature Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhism holds is latent within all beings and awakened through meditative practice. This is a status granted through God’s promises and the knowledge of Christ, not an inherent human potential self-realized; likewise ‘corruption’ (φθορά, sự hư nát) must remain a moral condition under judgment, not the neutral metaphysical impermanence (vô thường) of Buddhist thought.
Denial of Christ’s Atoning Purchase
Vietnamese name: Sự Chối Bỏ Sự Chuộc Mua của Đấng Christ
Key terms: bought/redeemed, master/sovereign lord, denying the Master
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: the false teachers’ central error is denying ‘the Master who bought them’ — a direct denial of Christ’s finished atoning work. Chuộc mua (commercial purchase-language) must be preserved as a completed, gracious transaction accomplished by Christ alone; any rendering that suggests an ongoing, repayable debt (echoing Confucian ơn nghĩa or karmic debt logic) would blur the very error the text condemns rather than exposing it.
The Certainty of Christ’s Return
Vietnamese name: Sự Chắc Chắn của Sự Quang Lâm của Đấng Christ
Key terms: parousia/coming, scoffer, promise, morning star
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: παρουσία (sự quang lâm) must never be rendered with sự tái sinh or any term evoking reincarnation/rebirth; it denotes a singular, historic, future return grounded in the eyewitnessed Transfiguration (1:16) and defended against the scoffers’ doubt (3:4) — not a recurring manifestation comparable to a bodhisattva’s repeated appearances.
The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment
Vietnamese name: Ngày của Chúa và Sự Phán Xét Cuối Cùng
Key terms: day of the Lord, reserved for fire, elements dissolved, judgment
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: ‘the day of the Lord’ (ngày của Chúa) is a fixed, linear, one-time future day of divine reckoning. Must not be assimilated to the Buddhist cosmological cycle of world-ages (thành–trụ–hoại–không: formation, continuation, destruction, emptiness), which teaches repeated cosmic destructions and re-formations without a final, personal Judge.
New Heavens and New Earth (Final Renewal)
Vietnamese name: Trời Mới Đất Mới (Sự Đổi Mới Cuối Cùng)
Key terms: new heavens and new earth, righteousness dwells, spotless and blameless
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: ‘trời mới đất mới’ names the final, permanent, one-time renewed creation following judgment of the present order, not one stage within a recurring kalpa-cycle of cosmic destruction and re-formation as in Buddhist cosmology; it is the permanent dwelling place of righteousness, not a temporary realm awaiting further cycles.
High Risk Doctrines
Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony
Vietnamese name: Lời Chứng của Sứ Đồ với Tư Cách Người Mắt Thấy
Key terms: eyewitness, myth, majesty, eyewitnesses of his majesty
Review routing: Human theologian
Peter’s explicit denial that the apostolic message rests on σεσοφισμένοις μύθοις (chuyện hoang đường, invented tales) must be preserved clearly; if softened, readers could equate apostolic testimony with a devotional legend or a visionary experience attained through meditation rather than verifiable, historical, sensory observation by named witnesses.
Savior Christology
Vietnamese name: Đấng Christ là Cứu Chúa
Key terms: savior, our God and Savior Jesus Christ, righteousness
Review routing: Human theologian
2 Peter 1:1 applies ‘Savior’ to both God and Jesus Christ in the same clause, a strong affirmation of Christ’s deity. Cứu Chúa must be distinguished from Vietnamese Buddhist savior-figure language such as Quan Thế Âm Bồ Tát invoked as ‘Đấng cứu khổ cứu nạn,’ whose deliverance operates through devotional merit within an ongoing cycle of suffering, rather than through a completed, historical, once-for-all atoning act.
Growing in Christian Virtue
Vietnamese name: Sự Tăng Trưởng trong Nhân Đức của Cơ Đốc Nhân
Key terms: virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, love
Review routing: Human theologian
The virtue list, especially ἀρετή (nhân đức), must be taught as Spirit-enabled growth added onto faith already granted by grace (1:3), not as self-generated Confucian moral cultivation — nhân đức is itself one of the Confucian Five Constant Virtues traditionally achieved through personal discipline and social duty, a framing this doctrine must resist.
False Teachers and Their Judgment
Vietnamese name: Giáo Sư Giả và Sự Phán Xét Dành cho Họ
Key terms: false teacher, destructive heresy, master/sovereign lord, bought/redeemed, destruction/perdition, freedom/liberty, slave (negative)
Review routing: Human theologian
‘False teacher’ (giáo sư giả) must denote specifically those who deny Christ’s Lordship and his atoning purchase (ἀγοράζω, chuộc mua) while claiming Christian authority, not merely any doctrinal disagreement. Chuộc mua must not be read through a karmic debt-repayment framework common in Vietnamese folk religious thought.
Certainty of Divine Judgment (OT Precedents)
Vietnamese name: Sự Chắc Chắn của Sự Phán Xét của Đức Chúa Trời (Các Tiền Lệ trong Cựu Ước)
Key terms: judgment, cast into Tartarus, flood/Noah, Sodom and Gomorrah, rescue/deliver, ungodliness, Balaam
Review routing: Human theologian
The fallen angels ‘cast into Tartarus’ (quăng vào vực sâu tối tăm) must be distinguished from the Vietnamese Buddhist multi-level địa ngục (hell realms) tied to a cycle of karmic punishment and eventual rebirth; this is a temporary confinement awaiting one final, decisive judgment. κρίσις (sự phán xét) throughout these verses must remain God’s personal moral verdict, not impersonal karma (nghiệp/quả báo).
Patience of God’s Timing
Vietnamese name: Sự Nhẫn Nại trong Thời Điểm của Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: patience/longsuffering, one day as a thousand years, not wishing that any should perish
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s apparent delay in judgment is purposeful, personal forbearance oriented toward repentance and salvation (3:9), not an indifferent or impersonal cosmic slowness comparable to số trời (fate-dispensing Heaven) or nghiệp (karma) simply running its course without any personal will behind it.
Scripture’s Reliability Against Distortion
Vietnamese name: Sự Đáng Tin Cậy của Kinh Thánh trước Sự Xuyên Tạc
Key terms: scripture, twist/distort, untaught and unstable, Paul’s letters
Review routing: Human theologian
3:16 places Paul’s letters alongside ‘the other Scriptures’ as equally God-given and authoritative (Kinh Thánh), even while acknowledging they can be willfully ‘twisted’ (xuyên tạc) by bad-faith or untaught readers; the doctrine of inspiration and reliability established in chapter 1 must be shown as intact despite this abuse, not undermined by it.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Divine Calling and Election
Vietnamese name: Sự Kêu Gọi và Sự Lựa Chọn của Đức Chúa Trời
Key terms: calling, election, make your calling and election sure
Review routing: Native speaker review
The exhortation to ‘make your calling and election sure’ concerns growing assurance through visible fruit, not earning or securing God’s prior sovereign choice; must not be read as số phận/số mệnh (fixed fate/destiny) that a diligent person can manipulate.
Sanctification and Holy Living in Light of Judgment
Vietnamese name: Sự Nên Thánh và Đời Sống Thánh Khiết trước Sự Phán Xét
Key terms: holy living, godliness, spotless and blameless, holy conduct
Review routing: Native speaker review
Holy conduct in view of the coming Day of the Lord is the Spirit’s ongoing work in the believer, not ritual self-purification or merit accumulation performed to influence the outcome, avoiding any conflation with práctica-style merit-making (công đức) common in Vietnamese Buddhist devotional life.
Growth in Grace and Knowledge
Vietnamese name: Sự Tăng Trưởng trong Ân Điển và Sự Hiểu Biết
Key terms: grace, knowledge, grow
Review routing: Native speaker review
The letter’s closing exhortation to ‘grow in grace and knowledge’ returns to chapter 1’s themes; growth must be framed as the outworking of a status already fully granted by grace (ân điển), never as an accumulation of merit that increases one’s standing before God.
