07 Semantic Analysis — 2 Timothy (Koine Greek Source Analysis)

English → Vietnamese | Full Book Coverage

Purpose and Method

This document analyzes every chapter of 2 Timothy in the original Koine Greek, first to last, to surface every load-bearing theological term for the destination language (Vietnamese) translation pipeline. The core passage (2 Timothy 3:14–4:5) receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing terms with the same fields. Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked [TM REUSE] and rendered exactly as recorded there; no alternative rendering is proposed for these. New terms proposed here for the 2 Timothy curriculum are marked [NEW TERM] and carry a proposed Vietnamese rendering, transliteration, and risk tier for entry into an updated translation memory in a later phase.

Risk tiers follow the baseline convention: Critical (doctrine-altering if mistranslated; theologian review required), High (significant syncretism/confusion risk; theologian review required), Medium (clarity risk; native-speaker review), Low (minor risk; automated review sufficient).

PART 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5

This passage is the theological anchor of the curriculum: Paul’s charge to Timothy regarding the sufficiency of inspired Scripture and the resulting charge to preach the Word in the face of coming apostasy.

2 Timothy 3:14

Greek: Σὺ δὲ μένε ἐν οἷς ἔμαθες καὶ ἐπιστώθης, εἰδὼς παρὰ τίνων ἔμαθες·

μένε (μένω)menōremain, stay, abideto continue in a place, state, or teaching; to persevere”continue,” “remain,” “abide”Timothy is charged to remain fixed in the apostolic teaching already received, not to drift with the apostasy described in 3:1-13”hãy tiếp tục ở trong” / “hãy cứ giữ vững” — [NEW TERM] Medium risk; must not be softened into a merely passive “staying put” but an active, deliberate perseverance in doctrine, tying to the Guarding Sound Doctrine theme
ἔμαθες (μανθάνω)emathes (manthanō)learnedto acquire knowledge or skill through instruction”learned,” “were taught”Refers to Timothy’s formal instruction under Paul (cf. 2 Tim 1:5, 3:10) — the chain of Faithful Transmission of the Gospel”đã học” — [NEW TERM] Low risk; standard verb
ἐπιστώθης (πιστόω)epistōthēs (pistoō)were assured, were convinced, were given confidencepassive: to be persuaded/confirmed in the truth of something; shares the πιστ- root with πίστις (faith)“were assured of,” “have been convinced,” “were persuaded”Timothy’s assurance is not mere intellectual acceptance but confidence rooted in trustworthy transmission — connects assurance of doctrine to the trustworthiness of its human and divine source”đã được xác quyết” / “đã tin chắc” — [NEW TERM] High risk; must be distinguished from generic occult “certainty” — this confidence rests on the reliability of apostolic teaching under God, not personal conviction alone

2 Timothy 3:15

ἱερὰ γράμματαhiera grammatasacred writings, holy lettersthe Old Testament Scriptures as a body of sacred, authoritative texts”holy Scriptures,” “sacred writings,” “the holy Scriptures”Names the Old Testament Timothy learned from infancy (probably through his mother/grandmother, 1:5) as the foundation of his instruction — anchors Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture”Kinh Thánh” — [NEW TERM] High risk; must never be equated with Buddhist sutras (kinh) transmitted through an enlightened teacher’s insight, nor with Confucian classics transmitted through sage tradition. The word “kinh” here names a fundamentally different category: a text given by a personal God (see 3:16). Reuses the baseline doctrine-note already established for “inspiration_of_scripture.”
σοφίσαι (σοφίζω)sophisai (sophizō)to make wiseto impart wisdom leading to a specific practical/spiritual outcome”make wise,” “instruct for wisdom”Scripture’s purpose is not abstract erudition but wisdom that leads specifically to salvation”khiến cho khôn sáng” — [NEW TERM] Medium risk; must retain the specific direction “unto salvation,” not read as generic worldly wisdom (a risk given Vietnamese cultural respect for accumulated scholarly wisdom, minh triết)
σωτηρίαν (σωτηρία)sōtērian (sōtēria)salvation, deliverance[TM REUSE — baseline “salvation”]“salvation,” “deliverance”The goal to which Scripture makes one wise — salvation through faith in Christ Jesussự cứu rỗi — [TM REUSE, Critical] Never sự giải thoát (Buddhist liberation from rebirth)

2 Timothy 3:16

πᾶσα γραφήpasa graphēall Scripture, every Scripturethe entire body of sacred Scripture, or every individual passage of it”all Scripture,” “every Scripture”Universal claim: the totality of Scripture (not a select portion) carries divine origin and authoritycả Kinh Thánh[NEW TERM] High risk; the universality (“all/every”) must not be softened, paralleling the baseline’s universality-preservation rule for Romans 3:23
θεόπνευστοςtheopneustosGod-breatheda hapax legomenon in the NT; compound of θεός (God) + πνέω (breathe out); Scripture as the direct product of God’s own breath/Spirit”God-breathed,” “inspired by God,” “given by inspiration of God”The single most doctrinally load-bearing word in the passage — grounds the entire doctrine of Inspiration of Scripture; Scripture’s origin is God himself, not human insight, mystical trance, or accumulated sage traditionđược Đức Chúa Trời soi dẫn[NEW TERM] CRITICAL. Must never be rendered with a term suggesting a medium’s channeled trance-speech (a category present in Vietnamese folk-religious spirit-mediumship, hầu đồng) or a sage’s accumulated insight (as in Confucian classics) or an enlightened teacher’s realization (as in Buddhist sutras). “Soi dẫn” (to illuminate and guide) is the established Vietnamese Protestant term and must be retained; the doctrinal content — direct divine origin of the very words of Scripture — must be made explicit in any teaching note.
ὠφέλιμοςōphelimosprofitable, useful, beneficialpractical usefulness or benefit”profitable,” “useful,” “beneficial”Scripture’s inspiration is not merely a fact about its origin but has a practical, life-shaping purposecó ích[NEW TERM] Low risk
διδασκαλίαdidaskaliateaching, doctrinethe content of instruction; can denote either the act of teaching or the body of doctrine taught”teaching,” “doctrine,” “instruction”The first of four purposes of Scripture: positively instructing believers in truth — grounds Guarding Sound Doctrinesự dạy dỗ[NEW TERM] Medium risk; when the referent is the fixed body of apostolic doctrine (as in 1:13, 4:3) prefer đạo lành in combination (see below); when referring to the general act/content of teaching, sự dạy dỗ
ἔλεγχοςelegchosreproof, conviction, exposure of errorto bring to light and convict of wrong; can denote rebuke or the evidence that produces conviction”reproof,” “conviction,” “rebuke”The second purpose: Scripture exposes and convicts of doctrinal and moral errorsự bẻ trách[NEW TERM] Medium risk

παιδείαpaideiatraining, discipline, instructionformative discipline/training of character, sometimes including correction but broader than punishment”training,” “instruction,” “discipline”The fourth purpose: Scripture forms character positively over time — this is formative, not merely punitive, trainingsự sửa dạy[NEW TERM] Medium risk; must not be reduced to punitive correction alone (a risk given Confucian-influenced expectations of strict, hierarchical discipline); this is restorative, character-forming training within grace
δικαιοσύνῃ (δικαιοσύνη)dikaiosynērighteousness[TM REUSE — baseline “righteousness”]“righteousness”The direction/goal of Scripture’s formative training: a life of right standing lived out, consistent with the forensic righteousness received by faithsự công bình — [TM REUSE, High]

ὁ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄνθρωποςho tou theou anthrōposthe man of Godidiomatic OT title for one devoted to and representing God (used of Moses, prophets); here applied to Timothy/every minister”the man of God,” “God’s servant”Names the minister of the Word as one specially devoted to God’s servicengười của Đức Chúa Trời[NEW TERM] Medium risk; established phrase, low ambiguity

ἔργον ἀγαθόνergon agathongood workvirtuous, God-honoring action or deed”good work,” “good deed”The purpose of Scripture’s sufficiency is not private edification alone but active good works — but note these works are the fruit of Scripture’s equipping, not the ground of righteousness (cf. Romans “imputed_righteousness” caution)việc lành — Low risk; standard term

2 Timothy 4:1

κρίνειν (κρίνω)krinein (krinō)to judgeto evaluate, decide, pronounce judgment, especially in a legal/eschatological sense”to judge,” “will judge”Christ as the coming eschatological Judge of all humanityxét đoán[NEW TERM] High risk

This is the same category of risk the baseline flags for resurrection and salvation.
ἐπιφάνειαν (ἐπιφάνεια)epiphaneian (epiphaneia)appearing, manifestationthe visible manifestation of a person, here Christ’s future glorious return (also used of his first coming’s manifestation in 1:10)“appearing,” “coming,” “manifestation”Christ’s future bodily, visible, historical return — a single, definitive eventsự hiện ra[NEW TERM] High risk; must not be modeled on the recurring, multiple manifestations (hóa thân) of a bodhisattva or deity across ages, paralleling the baseline’s caution on “incarnation.” This is one final appearing of the one Christ, not one in a series.

TM REUSE pattern — baseline “kingdom_of_god” = Nước Đức Chúa Trời]“kingdom”Christ’s future consummated reign, to which final judgment belongsNước Ngài / Nước Đức Chúa Trời — Medium risk; reuse the baseline kingdom rendering pattern, referring here to Christ’s coming reign

This is the established Vietnamese Protestant Bible rendering (cf. Titus 1:9, 2:1). Must be retained consistently across the curriculum; “lành” (healthy/wholesome) preserves Paul’s health metaphor. Must be carefully distinguished from the Vietnamese ancestor-veneration practice of pouring a wine libation (rót rượu cúng) to a deceased family member at the ancestral altar. Paul’s “pouring out” is a self-offering directed to God through his gospel ministry and impending martyrdom, not an offering made by others to appease or honor him after death — the direction of the offering (Paul to God, not descendants to Paul) must be made explicit in any teaching note.
