Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — 2 Peter (English → Vietnamese)

Why it matters

2 Peter defends the two pillars its scoffers and false teachers were attacking in the first century — the divine origin of Scripture and the certainty of Christ’s future return — and does so with vocabulary that sits closer to competing Vietnamese religious frameworks than almost any other NT letter. Its core passage (1:16–21) alone requires the translator to hold apart apostolic eyewitness testimony from folk hagiography, Christ’s eternal Sonship from a deified folk-hero title, and Spirit-given inspiration from sage- or enlightenment-transmitted scripture. Getting this letter right in Vietnamese is a high-precision task, not a routine glossary lookup.

Key findings

  • 77 enforced glossary terms now govern Phase 2 translation: 20 inherited verbatim from the Romans baseline (God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Son of God, Grace, Righteousness, Salvation, etc.) and 57 new terms introduced by 2 Peter’s distinctive vocabulary (Savior, Divine Nature, Parousia, Day of the Lord, False Teacher, and more).
  • 11 Critical-risk and 21 High-risk terms (32 total) require absolute glossary enforcement and mandatory human theologian review on every occurrence — roughly 42% of the entire glossary, a notably higher concentration than typical epistle content, driven by the letter’s dense eschatological and polemical vocabulary.
  • 17 doctrines span the full letter (1–3), of which 7 are Critical risk and 7 are High risk — 14 of 17 doctrines (82%) require human theologian review; only 3 route to native-speaker-level review, and none are automated-only.
  • 2 Peter 1:4 (“partakers of the divine nature,” escaping “corruption”) is the single highest-syncretism-risk phrase in the letter: it sits directly beside Phật tánh (innate Buddha-nature) and adjacent to the already-forbidden giải thoát (rebirth-liberation) vocabulary fenced in the Romans baseline for “salvation.”
  • Five cross-cutting sensitivities recur across doctrines: cyclical vs. linear time (Christ’s Return, Day of the Lord, New Creation), innate vs. granted status (Divine Nature, Growth in Knowledge), merit/debt vs. gift (Virtue, Atonement, Holy Living), personal vs. impersonal governance (Judgment, Patience), and unique vs. recurring divine figures (Christ’s Sonship and Return vs. avatar/Maitreya expectation patterns).

Risks

  • Phật tánh collision (Critical): “Divine nature” (θεία φύσις) and “escaping corruption” (1:4) are the sharpest single risk in the curriculum — a careless rendering could restate 2 Peter’s grace-granted communion with God as self-realized Buddha-nature.
  • Reincarnation/cyclical-cosmology drift (Critical, 3 doctrines): Parousia, Day of the Lord, and New Heavens/New Earth are each vulnerable to assimilation into Buddhist thành–trụ–hoại–không cosmology or Hindu/Buddhist recurring-avatar expectations (Kalki, Maitreya/Di-lặc) if linear, singular, final language is not rigorously held.
  • Inspiration-of-Scripture flattening (Critical): 1:20–21’s double negation (not private interpretation, not human will) is the letter’s highest-stakes single passage; under-translation risks equating Scripture with sutra- or sage-transmitted human insight.
  • Karmic/debt reframing (High, 3 doctrines): “Bought” (2:1), “judgment/destruction” (ch. 2–3), and God’s “patience” (3:9) all sit beside Vietnamese karmic-causation (nghiệp/quả báo) and Confucian reciprocal-debt (ơn nghĩa) concepts that could silently substitute an impersonal mechanism for a personal God’s free, purposeful action.
  • Confucian self-cultivation reframing (High): The virtue list (1:5–8), especially nhân đức (also the standard gloss for the Confucian virtue Nhân), risks being read as a self-improvement ladder rather than Spirit-enabled fruit added onto grace already given.

Opportunities

  • A century of settled Vietnamese Protestant vocabulary (Bản Dịch Truyền Thống) already supplies clean, non-syncretic renderings for the letter’s most load-bearing shared terms (God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Salvation, Righteousness), letting this package focus its new-coinage effort narrowly on 2 Peter’s distinctive vocabulary.
  • The letter’s strong deity-of-Christ affirmations (1:1’s joint “God and Savior,” 1:17’s voice from heaven) give the curriculum a natural, textually-grounded opportunity to teach Christ’s unique deity directly against three competing local models (deified folk hero, bodhisattva-rescuer, recurring avatar) in a single core passage.
  • The curriculum-specific ἐπίγνωσις/γνῶσις two-tier coinage (sự nhận biết / sự hiểu biết) offers a reusable teaching pattern for future NT epistle curricula that also distinguish relational from general knowledge.
  • Chapter 2’s judgment vocabulary, while polemically dense, provides rich material for directly contrasting a personal Judge’s moral verdict against karmic cause-and-effect — a distinction highly relevant pastorally to Vietnamese believers navigating family expectations around merit and ancestor veneration.
  1. Mandate theologian sign-off on all 32 Critical/High-risk terms and all 14 Critical/High-risk doctrines before any Phase 2 segment is marked approved — no automated-only pathway exists for this letter.
  2. Attach the required teaching note to every occurrence of divine_nature, private_interpretation, moved_by_the_spirit, parousia_coming, day_of_the_lord, new_heavens_new_earth, and patience_longsuffering, per the escalation rules in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
  3. Enforce the ἐπίγνωσις/γνῶσις distinction consistently across every lesson document, with a first-occurrence gloss in each, since no prior Vietnamese Bible precedent exists to anchor it.
  4. Brief reviewers explicitly on the five cross-cutting sensitivities (cyclical/linear time, innate/granted status, merit/gift, personal/impersonal governance, unique/recurring figures) as standing review criteria, not just term-by-term glossary checks.
  5. Reuse this package’s inherited terms verbatim in any future NT epistle curriculum sharing vocabulary with Romans and 2 Peter, to preserve the cross-curriculum consistency the pipeline depends on.
