Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis: 1 Peter (Koine Greek, Full Book)
Methodology Note
This analysis covers the entire Greek text of 1 Peter, chapter 1 through chapter 5. The core passage, 1 Peter 1:3–9, receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every subsequent chapter is analyzed for its own load-bearing theological vocabulary using the same field set. Where a term already carries an established rendering in the baseline Romans Language Package for Nepali, that rendering is reused exactly and marked [BASELINE REUSE]. New terms required for 1 Peter’s distinct doctrinal content are proposed with full risk rationale, following the same Critical/High/Medium/Low tier logic and the same class of syncretism concerns already documented in the baseline (Hindu Kingdom legacy, Muluki Ain caste codification, Newar Tantric/Shakta tradition, Himalayan Buddhist rebirth and tulku reincarnation frameworks, and Nepal’s 2017 Muluki Criminal Code restrictions on religious conversion).
Field set used for every term:
- Original (Greek, with transliteration)
- Literal meaning
- Semantic range
- English variants (as commonly rendered in KJV/ESV/NIV)
- Contextual theological meaning in 1 Peter
- Nepali rendering — proposed/established term, transliteration, risk tier, rationale
PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 1 Peter 1:3–9
1 Peter 1:3
- εὐλογητός (eulogētos) — “blessed, worthy of praise.” Semantic range: benediction formula opening a doxology. English variants: “blessed.” Contextual meaning: opens the letter’s theological thanksgiving, parallel to Romans’ opening doxologies. Nepali: धन्यको (dhanyako) — Low risk; standard doxological Nepali usage.
- Θεὸς καὶ Πατήρ (Theos kai Patēr) — “God and Father.” Nepali: परमेश्वर and पिता — [BASELINE REUSE], Critical/High risk terms already established; never भगवान for God.
- Κύριος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (Kyrios hēmōn Iēsou Christou) — “our Lord Jesus Christ.” Nepali: हाम्रा प्रभु येशू ख्रीष्ट — [BASELINE REUSE] प्रभु (lord, Critical) and येशू (Jesus, Critical); ख्रीष्ट (Christ) is the established transliteration per the baseline instruction document’s proper-name table.
- ἔλεος (eleos) — “mercy, compassion shown toward those in distress.” Literal: pity/compassion. Semantic range: distinct from χάρις (grace, unmerited favor toward the guilty) — ἔλεος emphasizes compassion toward suffering/need. English variants: “mercy,” “great mercy.” Contextual meaning: God’s compassionate initiative that grounds the new birth. Nepali: दया (daya) — Medium-High risk. दया is the standard Nepali Christian term for divine mercy and must be kept distinct from अनुग्रह (grace, reserved for unmerited-favor contexts per baseline). Risk: translators may conflate दया and अनुग्रह; a translator note should mark the distinction wherever both occur in the same passage (e.g., 1:3 दया / 2:19-20 अनुग्रह).
- ἀναγεννήσας (anagennēsas, from ἀναγεννάω) — “having begotten again / caused to be born again.” Literal: “born again/anew.” Semantic range: regeneration, new spiritual birth. English variants: “born again,” “given new birth,” “regenerated.” Contextual theological meaning: the foundational doctrine that living hope flows from God’s own act of new birth, not human effort or ritual. Nepali: नयाँ जन्म दिनुभयो (naya janma dinubhayo, “gave new birth”) — CRITICAL risk. Must NEVER be rendered with पुनर्जन्म (rebirth), which — exactly as the baseline forbids for “resurrection” — would collide with the Hindu/Buddhist karma-driven rebirth cycle held by Nepal’s Hindu majority and its Newar/Himalayan Buddhist communities. नयाँ जन्म (a single, once-for-all, non-repeating birth given by God) must be clearly distinguished from पुनर्जन्म (a repeating cycle). This distinction should be added to the forbidden-substitution list alongside resurrection.
- ἐλπὶς ζῶσα (elpis zōsa) — “living hope.” Literal: hope that is alive/living. Semantic range: hope with a personal, active, resurrection-grounded referent, as opposed to hope as mere wish or resignation. English variants: “living hope,” “lively hope” (KJV). Contextual theological meaning: THE thematic anchor of the letter and this curriculum’s first doctrine (“The Living Hope of the Resurrection”). Hope that is alive because it is grounded in a living, resurrected Christ. Nepali: जीवित आशा (jivit asha) — High risk. आशा (hope) alone is a common, low-risk Nepali word, but “living hope” specifically must be preserved as a fixed doctrinal phrase, not diluted into a general wish for a better future or into fatalistic acceptance (भाग्य/किस्मत, already forbidden in baseline for “election”). Must be consistently paired with पुनरुत्थान (resurrection) in teaching contexts.
- ἀνάστασις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐκ νεκρῶν (anastasis Iēsou Christou ek nekrōn) — “resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” Nepali: येशू ख्रीष्टको पुनरुत्थान — [BASELINE REUSE], Critical risk; पुनरुत्थान never पुनर्जन्म.
1 Peter 1:4
Literal: portion received by lot/heirship. Semantic range: legal/familial transfer of property or status to an heir. English variants: “inheritance.” Contextual theological meaning: believers’ certain future possession secured in heaven, connecting to Romans’ “adoption” doctrine (baseline: दत्तक पुत्रता). Nepali: उत्तराधिकार (uttaradhikar) — High risk. In Nepal, inheritance rights have historically been entangled with caste and lineage law (the same Muluki Ain legal tradition flagged throughout the baseline for धार्मिकता and universal_scope_of_gospel). Teaching must make explicit that this उत्तराधिकार is granted by grace to every believer regardless of caste or lineage status, not inherited biologically or caste-wise.
- ἄφθαρτος (aphthartos) — “imperishable, incorruptible.” Nepali: अविनाशी (avinashi) — Medium risk; standard, non-syncretic Nepali adjective, but should not be confused with Hindu/Buddhist teaching on an imperishable eternal self (ātman) — the referent here is the inheritance, not a metaphysical self.
- ἀμίαντος (amiantos) — “undefiled, unstained.” Nepali: निष्कलंक (nishkalank) — Low-Medium risk; standard moral-purity adjective.
- ἀμάραντος (amarantos) — “unfading” (root of English “amaranth”). Nepali: अक्षय (akshaya, “imperishable/never-diminishing”) — Medium risk. अक्षय is a Sanskrit-origin word with currency in Hindu ritual vocabulary (e.g., अक्षय तृतीया). Used here as a plain adjective it is broadly accepted in Nepali Christian usage, but a translator note should confirm it is read as “will never fade/diminish,” not as referring to karmic merit that never depletes.
- τετηρημένην ἐν οὐρανοῖς (tetērēmenēn en ouranois) — “kept/reserved in heaven.”
- φρουρούμενους (phrouroumenous, from φρουρέω) — “being guarded” (military sentry imagery). Literal: kept under guard. English variants: “guarded,” “kept,” “protected.” Contextual theological meaning: God’s active, ongoing military-style protection of believers until the inheritance is revealed. Nepali: सुरक्षित राखिएका / पहरा दिइएका — Medium risk; recommend पहरा दिइएका (guarded as by a sentry) to preserve the vivid image rather than the flatter सुरक्षित राखिएका.
- δύναμις Θεοῦ (dynamis Theou) — “power of God.” Nepali: परमेश्वरको सामर्थ्य — [BASELINE REUSE], High risk; never शक्ति, per the baseline’s Newar Tantric/Shakta-tradition concern.
- πίστις (pistis) — “faith.” Nepali: विश्वास — [BASELINE REUSE], High risk.
- σωτηρία (sōtēria) — “salvation.” Nepali: उद्धार — [BASELINE REUSE], Critical, dual-front risk (never मुक्ति/मोक्ष/निर्वाण).
- ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (apokalyphthēnai, from ἀποκαλύπτω) — “to be revealed/unveiled.” Nepali: प्रकट हुन — Medium risk; root shared with “revelation” (ἀποκάλυψις) recurring at 1:7, 1:13, 4:13.
- καιρῷ ἐσχάτῳ (kairō eschatō) — “in the last time.” Nepali: अन्तिम समयमा — Low-Medium risk; linear, historical end-time framing, not a cyclical cosmic-age (yuga) framing — consistent with baseline’s fulfillment_of_prophecy doctrine note.
1 Peter 1:6
- ἀγαλλιᾶσθε (agalliasthe, from ἀγαλλιάω) — “to exult, rejoice greatly.” Stronger than χαίρω (ordinary joy). English variants: “rejoice greatly,” “exult.” Nepali: अत्यन्तै रमाउनु / हर्षले उछल्नु — Low-Medium risk; should be distinguished in teaching from the ordinary “आनन्द” (joy) used elsewhere, to preserve intensity.
- πειρασμοί (peirasmoi, from πειρασμός) — “trials/testings,” same root can mean “temptations.” Semantic range: circumstantial hardship (trial) or enticement to sin (temptation) — context determines sense; here it is external suffering, not enticement. English variants: “trials,” “various trials.” Nepali: परीक्षा (parikshha) — High risk. This is a key term for the curriculum doctrine “Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake.” परीक्षा must be understood as God-permitted testing of genuine faith under a personal, purposive God (cf. baseline “providence” — परमेश्वरको व्यवस्थापन), not as karmic testing/purification within an impersonal cosmic order. Recurs at 4:12 (πύρωσις, fiery trial).
1 Peter 1:7
- δοκίμιον (dokimion) — “the tested genuineness/proven character (of something).” Literal: “means of testing” or “that which is proven genuine.” English variants: “genuineness,” “proof,” “trial.” Contextual theological meaning: faith’s genuineness, not faith’s existence, is what is being refined. Nepali: विश्वासको साँचोपन/खरोपन (vishwasko sanchopan) — Medium-High risk; must not be rendered so as to suggest faith itself is earned or increased by merit through suffering — the refining metaphor tests authenticity, it does not create merit (a careful distinction against both Hindu and Buddhist merit-accumulation frameworks, echoing baseline’s grace doctrine concern).
- χρυσίον τὸ ἀπολλύμενον (chrysion to apollymenon) — “gold that perishes.” Nepali: नाशवान सुन — Low risk.
- πυρὸς δοκιμαζομένου (pyros dokimazomenou) — “being tested by fire.” Nepali: आगोले जाँचिएको — Low risk; refining-fire metaphor, culturally intelligible (goldsmithing is a familiar Nepali trade image).
- ἔπαινος, δόξα, τιμή (epainos, doxa, timē) — “praise, glory, honor.” δόξα = महिमा [BASELINE REUSE], High risk. ἔπαινος = प्रशंसा, Low risk. τιμή = आदर/सम्मान, Low-Medium risk (honor language carries real social weight in Nepal’s honor-shame culture; teaching may connect this to eschatological honor rather than present social honor).
- ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (apokalypsis Iēsou Christou) — “the revealing/revelation of Jesus Christ” — his return in glory. Nepali: येशू ख्रीष्ट प्रकट हुने बेला — Medium risk; must be distinguished from a repeatable divine manifestation/avatar-descent (cf. baseline’s देहधारण/incarnation concern) — this is Christ’s singular, final appearing, not a new incarnation.
1 Peter 1:8
- ἀγαπᾶτε (agapate, from ἀγαπάω) — “you love.” Semantic range: self-giving, covenantal love (distinct from φιλέω affection or ἔρως desire). English variants: “love.” Contextual theological meaning: love for the unseen Christ, grounding the letter’s repeated call to ἀγάπη among believers (1:22, 4:8). Nepali: प्रेम गर्नु — Low-Medium risk; प्रेम is standard, but teaching should distinguish this committed, willed love from भक्ति (devotional emotional fervor toward a deity, explicitly rejected in baseline for “faith”).
- πιστεύοντες (pisteuontes, from πιστεύω) — “believing.” Nepali: विश्वास गर्दै — [BASELINE REUSE] root.
- χαρὰ ἀνεκλάλητος καὶ δεδοξασμένη (chara aneklalētos kai dedoxasmenē) — “joy inexpressible and glorified/full of glory.” Nepali: अवर्णनीय र महिमित आनन्द — Low-Medium risk; महिमित reuses महिमा (glory, baseline High risk term) as an adjective form.
1 Peter 1:9
- κομιζόμενοι (komizomenoi, from κομίζω) — “obtaining, receiving (as one’s due/reward).” Nepali: प्राप्त गर्दै — Low risk.
- τέλος τῆς πίστεως (telos tēs pisteōs) — “the outcome/goal of faith.” Semantic range: τέλος can mean “end,” “goal,” or “completion.” English variants: “outcome of your faith,” “goal of your faith,” “end of your faith” (KJV). Nepali: विश्वासको लक्ष्य/परिणाम — Medium risk; recommend लक्ष्य (goal) over अन्त्य (mere ending), since the point is faith’s fulfillment, not its termination. Note this same root recurs eschatologically at 4:7 (τέλος πάντων, “the end of all things”).
- σωτηρίαν ψυχῶν (sōtērian psychōn) — “salvation of souls.” [BASELINE REUSE], Critical.
- ψυχή (psychē) — “soul, life, self.” Semantic range: the whole inner person/life, sometimes near-synonymous with “self.” English variants: “soul,” “life,” “self.” Nepali: प्राण (pran) — High risk. Nepali colloquially often uses आत्मा for both “soul” and “spirit,” but the baseline reserves पवित्र आत्मा exclusively for the personal Holy Spirit (Critical term). Using आत्मा for ψυχή throughout 1 Peter (which uses this word frequently: 1:9, 1:22, 2:11, 2:25, 3:20, 4:19) risks blurring the line between the human soul and the divine Spirit in the reader’s mind. प्राण (life/soul/breath) is recommended consistently for ψυχή to preserve this distinction; this should be added as a cross-document consistency rule.
PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Analysis of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 (vv. 1–2, 10–25; vv. 3–9 treated above)
- ἀπόστολος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (1:1) — “apostle of Jesus Christ.” Nepali: प्रेरित [BASELINE REUSE], Medium risk.
- ἐκλεκτοί (eklektoi, 1:1) — “elect, chosen ones.” Semantic range: God’s sovereign selection. English variants: “elect,” “chosen.” Nepali: चुनिएका, drawing on परमेश्वरको छनोट [BASELINE REUSE concept], High risk — never भाग्य/किस्मत (fate).
- παρεπίδημοι (parepidēmoi, 1:1) — “sojourners, resident aliens, exiles.” Literal: those temporarily dwelling among a foreign people. English variants: “elect exiles,” “strangers,” “pilgrims” (KJV). Contextual theological meaning: believers’ social and spiritual status as a scattered, temporary-resident minority — a major identity theme of the whole letter (recurs 2:11). Nepali: प्रवासी/परदेशी — High risk. Given Nepal’s young, historically restricted church (illegal until 1990, and still facing 2017 Muluki Criminal Code conversion restrictions per baseline), this self-identity as legally and socially marginal “sojourners” carries direct lived resonance and must not be softened into a merely spiritual metaphor divorced from real social experience.
- πρόγνωσις Θεοῦ Πατρός (1:2) — “foreknowledge of God the Father.” Nepali: परमेश्वर पिताको अगिबाटैको ज्ञान — High risk; election/foreknowledge language, connects to baseline’s “election” (परमेश्वरको छनोट) and “providence” (परमेश्वरको व्यवस्थापन) terms.
- ἁγιασμὸς Πνεύματος (1:2) — “sanctification of the Spirit.”
- ῥαντισμὸς αἵματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (1:2) — “sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ.” Literal: OT sacrificial/covenant-ratification imagery (cf. Exod 24). Must connect to OT sacrificial background, not to any Hindu blood-ritual practice; requires explanatory framing for readers without OT literacy (per the AI system prompt’s noted low OT-narrative literacy of the primary Nepali audience).
- προφῆται (1:10) — “prophets.” Nepali: अगमवक्ता [BASELINE REUSE], Low risk.
- Πνεῦμα Χριστοῦ (1:11) — “Spirit of Christ.” Nepali: ख्रीष्टको आत्मा — Medium risk; must be read as the same पवित्र आत्मा (Holy Spirit) acting in the prophets, not a separate spirit-being.
- ἄγγελοι (1:12) — “angels.” Nepali: स्वर्गदूत — Low-Medium risk; distinct from Hindu/Buddhist deva or protective-deity categories.
- ἀναζωσάμενοι τὰς ὀσφύας τῆς διανοίας (1:13) — idiom, “having girded up the loins of your mind.” Literal Jewish idiom for readiness for action/travel. Nepali (idiom handling): आफ्ना मन तयार पारेर (“having prepared your minds”) — Low risk if rendered by dynamic equivalence rather than literal “loin-girding,” which would be obscure/confusing in Nepali.
- νήφοντες (1:13) — “being sober-minded.” Recurs 4:7, 5:8.
- τέκνα ὑπακοῆς (1:14) — “children of obedience.” [BASELINE REUSE concept], High risk.
- ἐπιθυμίαι (1:14) — “desires, lusts, passions.” Nepali: अभिलाषा/वासना — Medium risk; recurs heavily (2:11, 4:2-3) as the contrast-category to holiness.
ἅγιοι γένεσθε (1:15-16, quoting Lev 11:44/19:2) — “holy… be holy.” Nepali: पवित्र [BASELINE REUSE], High risk.
- φόβος (1:17) — “fear.” Semantic range: reverent awe before God, not terror. Nepali: भय/डर (with qualifier: श्रद्धापूर्ण डर, “reverent fear”) — Medium risk; must not be confused with fear of capricious deities or of ritual punishment in folk religion.
- παροικία (1:17) — “time of sojourning/exile.” Nepali: प्रवासी हुने समय — High risk, same as παρεπίδημοι above.
- λυτρόω / ἐλυτρώθητε (1:18) — “to ransom, redeem (by payment of a price).” Semantic range: deliverance secured by payment, distinct from σωτηρία’s broader “deliverance.” English variants: “ransomed,” “redeemed.” Nepali: छुटकारा दिनु — High risk. Must be kept distinct from मुक्ति/मोक्ष (already forbidden for “salvation” in the baseline for their Hindu liberation-from-rebirth associations). छुटकारा (ransom/deliverance by payment) is recommended over मुक्ति because it preserves the commercial/sacrificial “price paid” sense without invoking liberation-from-the-cycle theology.
- ματαία ἀναστροφή (1:18) — “futile/empty way of life (inherited from ancestors).” Nepali: पुर्खाबाट पाएको व्यर्थ चालचलन — Medium-High risk; directly relevant to ancestral religious practice and Nepali ancestor-veneration customs — must be handled pastorally but not softened doctrinally.
ἀμνοῦ ἀμώμου καὶ ἀσπίλου (1:19) — “precious blood of Christ… a lamb without blemish or spot.” This is the letter’s central substitutionary-atonement image (Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering). Must be taught with explicit OT Passover/Isaiah 53 sacrificial background so it is not misheard as endorsing or resembling any animal-sacrifice ritual practiced in Nepali Hindu tradition (e.g., Dashain/Gadhimai-type sacrificial offerings); the point is Christ’s unique, final, once-for-all sacrifice ending the sacrificial system, not participating in or validating an ongoing sacrificial economy.
- προεγνωσμένου πρὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου (1:20) — “foreknown before the foundation of the world.”
- φανερωθέντος ἐπ᾽ ἐσχάτου τῶν χρόνων (1:20) — “manifested/made visible at the last of the times.” Nepali: समयको अन्त्यमा प्रकट हुनुभयो — High risk; connects to Incarnation doctrine (baseline: देहधारण) — a unique, historical, once-for-all manifestation, not a repeatable divine descent.
ἐν τῇ ὑπακοῇ τῆς ἀληθείας (1:22) — “having purified your souls in obedience to the truth.” Nepali: सत्यताप्रति आज्ञाकारितामा प्राणहरूलाई शुद्ध पारेर — Medium risk; “purify” (ἁγνίζω, related to ἅγιος) should not read as ritual purification (cf. baseline’s holy/शुद्ध caution) but as moral transformation through embracing gospel truth. ψυχάς rendered प्राण per the psychē consistency rule above.
- ἀναγεγεννημένοι οὐκ ἐκ σπορᾶς φθαρτῆς ἀλλὰ ἀφθάρτου, διὰ λόγου ζῶντος Θεοῦ καὶ μένοντος (1:23) — “having been born again not of perishable seed but imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God.” Nepali: नाशवान बिउबाट होइन तर अविनाशी बिउबाट, परमेश्वरको जीवित र अटल वचनद्वारा नयाँ जन्म पाएका — CRITICAL risk; same नयाँ जन्म (never पुनर्जन्म) rule as 1:3 applies here, reinforced by the “seed” (σπορά) agricultural metaphor, which must not be read through a karmic-seed (bīja/karma-phala) framework common to both Hindu and Buddhist teaching on cause-and-effect across lives.
- πᾶσα σὰρξ ὡς χόρτος (1:24, quoting Isa 40:6-8) — “all flesh is like grass.” Nepali: सबै शरीर घाँसजस्तै हो — Low risk, standard OT quotation imagery.
Chapter 2
- τὸ λογικὸν ἄδολον γάλα (2:2) — “the pure/unadulterated spiritual milk of the word.” Literal: “reasonable/word-related unmixed milk.” Nepali: वचनको निष्कपट आत्मिक दूध — Medium risk; must convey Scripture as spiritual nourishment for the newly born-again, not a ritual-purity food category.
- χρηστὸς ὁ Κύριος (2:3) — “the Lord is good/kind.”
Should be taught with explicit connection to the “living hope”/“living God” theme of the letter, not read as a generic architectural image.
ἐκλεκτόν, ἔντιμον (2:4) — “rejected [by men] … chosen, precious [by God].” Nepali: इन्कार गरिएको … चुनिएको, बहुमूल्य — High risk; reuses चुनिएको (elect/chosen concept) from ch.1.
- οἶκος πνευματικός (2:5) — “spiritual house.” Nepali: आत्मिक घर — Medium risk; corporate-church imagery, distinct from मण्डली [BASELINE REUSE term for “church”] but conceptually related — recommend a translator note linking the two so learners connect the metaphor to the established doctrinal term.
Literal: a body of priests. Semantic range: the corporate priestly identity of ALL believers (contra a professional priestly class). English variants: “holy priesthood,” “royal priesthood.” Contextual theological meaning: THE anchor text for the curriculum doctrine “The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood” — every believer, without exception, has direct priestly access to God through Christ. पूजाहारी is the established Nepali Bible term for OT/priestly-office “priest,” but its root पूजा is the ordinary Nepali word for Hindu/Buddhist ritual worship performed by a specialist priestly caste (Brahmin purohit, lama, etc.) — a caste-linked religious specialism directly bound up with the same Muluki Ain caste hierarchy the baseline repeatedly flags. 1 Peter 2:9’s entire theological force is the OPPOSITE claim: every believer, regardless of caste or birth, is a priest with direct access to God — no ritual-specialist intermediary caste is needed. Teaching materials must make this contrast explicit and pre-empt the natural (mis)reading that Christians have simply installed a new priestly caste of their own.
- γένος ἐκλεκτόν (2:9) — “chosen race/generation.” Literal: race, offspring, kind. English variants: “chosen race,” “chosen generation” (KJV), “chosen people” (NIV). जाति is the ordinary Nepali word for both “nation” and “caste/ethnic group” — the very word underlying Nepal’s caste-classification vocabulary. Rendering γένος as जाति risks the text being heard as declaring the church a new caste category, precisely inverting Peter’s point that the church transcends and unites all castes and ethnicities into one people in Christ (cf. baseline doctrine unity_of_jews_and_gentiles). वंश (lineage/family line) is a safer primary rendering; if जाति is retained (as some established Nepali Bible editions do), it must be accompanied by explicit teaching that this “जाति” is spiritual and open to all castes, not a replacement caste category.
- ἔθνος ἅγιον (2:9) — “holy nation.” Nepali: पवित्र जाति — Same जाति-caste risk as above, CRITICAL, compounded by the fact that elsewhere in the same verse and letter ἔθνη (plural, “the nations/Gentiles”) is rendered अन्यजाति [BASELINE REUSE] — creating potential reader confusion between “a holy जाति” (the church, positive) and “अन्यजाति” (the nations, i.e. non-believers, contextually neutral-to-negative). A translator note must flag this same-root double usage.
- λαὸς εἰς περιποίησιν (2:9) — “a people for [God’s] own possession.”
- ἐξαγγείλητε τὰς ἀρετάς (2:9) — “proclaim the excellencies/virtues [of him who called you].” [BASELINE REUSE, mission] and carries the same Nepal-specific legal-sensitivity note the baseline attaches to evangelism/proclamation.
- ἐκ σκότους εἰς τὸ θαυμαστὸν αὐτοῦ φῶς (2:9) — “out of darkness into his marvelous light.” Nepali: अन्धकारबाट अचम्मको ज्योतिमा — Low-Medium risk; light/darkness contrast should avoid unnecessary overlap with Tantric divine-radiance imagery (cf. baseline’s glory/महिमा caution), though “light” itself (ज्योति) is a standard, safe term here.
νῦν δὲ ἐλεηθέντες (2:10) — “once not a people… now God’s people; once not shown mercy… now shown mercy.” अब दया पाएका — High risk; ἐλεέω reuses दया (mercy, established at 1:3).
- πάροικοι καὶ παρεπίδημοι (2:11) — “sojourners and exiles.” Nepali: परदेशी र प्रवासी — High risk, as at 1:1/1:17.
- σαρκικαὶ ἐπιθυμίαι στρατευόμεναι κατὰ τῆς ψυχῆς (2:11) — “fleshly desires waging war against the soul.”
- ἀναστροφὴν καλὴν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν (2:12) — “good/honorable conduct among the Gentiles.” Nepali: अन्यजातिहरूमाझ असल चालचलन — High risk; चालचलन (conduct/behavior) is a recurring, load-bearing term for the curriculum doctrine “Holiness in Conduct” (recurs 3:1-2, 16). Must be rendered consistently throughout.
- ὑποτάγητε πάσῃ ἀνθρωπίνῃ κτίσει (2:13) — “be subject/submit to every human institution/authority.” ὑποτάσσω = अधीनमा रहनु — High risk, the anchor verb for the curriculum doctrine “Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance.” Recurs at 2:18 (servants), 3:1 (wives), 3:22 and 5:5 (spiritual powers/younger to elders). Must be taught with care: this is voluntary, gospel-motivated submission modeled on Christ’s own submission-in-suffering (2:21-24), never a re-endorsement of the coercive, caste-based social subordination the Muluki Ain once enforced by law. This distinction is essential and should be flagged for theologian review at every occurrence.
- βασιλεύς / ἡγεμόνες (2:13-14) — “king/emperor / governors.” Nepali: राजा / हाकिमहरू — Medium risk; in a country whose monarchy was constitutionally tied to divine-avatar theology until 2008 (cf. baseline’s देहधारण note), teaching on submitting to “the king” must be handled with awareness of this recent history — the text commends civic submission to legitimate authority, not religious veneration of a ruler.
- δεσπόταις / οἰκέται (2:18) — “masters / household servants.” Nepali: मालिकहरू / नोकरहरू — Medium-High risk given Nepal’s own history of bonded-labor and caste-based servitude systems (formally abolished but socially persistent); teaching must avoid appearing to endorse permanent servile status as spiritually ideal.
- πάσχειν ἀδίκως (2:19) — “suffering unjustly.” πάσχω = दुःख भोग्नु — High risk, THE central recurring verb of the letter (used at least 12 times across chs. 2-5) and the anchor for the curriculum doctrine “Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake.” Must be consistently rendered and must not be assimilated to a karma-suffering framework (“suffering because of past-life wrongdoing”) shared by both Hindu and Buddhist thought in Nepal; this suffering is unjust and innocent, borne in imitation of Christ, not deserved.
- ὑπογραμμός (2:21) — “example, pattern (lit. a writing-copy for students to trace).” Nepali: नमूना/उदाहरण — Low risk.
- ἁμαρτίαν οὐκ ἐποίησεν, οὐδὲ εὑρέθη δόλος (2:22, quoting Isa 53:9) — “he committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.” Nepali: पाप गर्नुभएन, र उहाँको मुखमा छल पाइएन — High risk; sinlessness of Christ, foundational to substitutionary suffering doctrine.
- ἀνήνεγκεν ἐν τῷ σώματι αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ ξύλον (2:24) — “he himself bore [our sins] in his body on the tree.” ξύλον (xylon), literally “wood/tree,” idiomatic for “the cross.” Nepali: उहाँले आफ्नो शरीरमा क्रुसमा हाम्रा पापहरू बहन गर्नुभयो — CRITICAL risk; the letter’s clearest statement of substitutionary atonement, requires theologian review at every occurrence and consistent rendering across all study materials.
- ἵνα ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ἀπογενόμενοι τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ ζήσωμεν (2:24) — “that having died to sin we might live to righteousness.” δικαιοσύνη = धार्मिकता [BASELINE REUSE] — Critical.
- τῷ μώλωπι αὐτοῦ ἰάθητε (2:24, quoting Isa 53:5) — “by his wound(s) you have been healed.” Nepali: उहाँको चोटले तिमीहरू निको भयौ — High risk; teaching must clarify this is primarily healing from sin’s dominion, not a guarantee of physical healing, to avoid a prosperity-gospel misreading.
- ποιμὴν καὶ ἐπίσκοπος τῶν ψυχῶν (2:25) — “shepherd and overseer of your souls.” Nepali: तिमीहरूका प्राणहरूका गोठालो र रक्षक — High risk; introduces the shepherd/overseer (ποιμήν/ἐπίσκοπος) word-pair that becomes the technical vocabulary for church eldership in chapter 5 — must be cross-referenced.
Chapter 3
- γυναῖκες ὑποτασσόμεναι τοῖς ἀνδράσιν (3:1) — “wives being subject to [their own] husbands.” ὑποτάσσω = अधीनमा रहनु, reused from ch. 2 — High risk.
- ἁγνὴν ἀναστροφὴν ἐν φόβῳ (3:2) — “pure/reverent conduct with respect/fear.” चालचलन reused — High risk.
- ὁ τοῦ πραέος καὶ ἡσυχίου πνεύματος (3:4) — “the gentle and quiet spirit.” Nepali: नम्र र शान्त आत्मा — Medium risk; must not be taught as endorsing female silencing or passivity as an absolute social rule, but as inner disposition of trust, alongside the chapter’s own example of Sarah’s active respect (3:6). πνεῦμα here is a disposition, not the divine Spirit — flag context sensitivity against confusion with पवित्र आत्मा.
Nepali: प्रभु भनी बोलाउँदै — Note: this is the SAME Greek word (κύριος) reserved elsewhere exclusively for Christ’s exclusive Lordship (Critical baseline term). A translator note is required distinguishing this ordinary-honorific human usage from the doctrinal, exclusive use of प्रभु for Christ — recommend a lower-case-equivalent honorific gloss such as “मालिक” or “स्वामी” for this one historical/narrative usage to avoid diluting प्रभु’s doctrinal weight, while noting the wordplay for advanced study.
- συγκληρονόμοι χάριτος ζωῆς (3:7) — “fellow heirs of the grace of life.” [BASELINE REUSE] — High risk.
- ὁμόφρονες, συμπαθεῖς, φιλάδελφοι, εὔσπλαγχνοι, ταπεινόφρονες (3:8) — “of one mind, sympathetic, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, humble-minded.” Nepali: एकमनका, समवेदनशील, भाइचारा प्रेमी, कोमल हृदयी, नम्र मनका — Low-Medium risk; introduces ταπεινοφροσύνη/नम्रता (humility), which becomes a Medium-High risk anchor term for the “Elders and Humility” doctrine in ch. 5.
εὐλογοῦντες (3:9) — “not repaying evil for evil … but blessing.”
- ὀφθαλμοὶ Κυρίου ἐπὶ δικαίους (3:12, quoting Ps 34) — “the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous.” δίκαιος relates to धार्मिकता [BASELINE REUSE] — High risk.
- εἰ καὶ πάσχοιτε διὰ δικαιοσύνην, μακάριοι (3:14) — “even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, blessed [are you].” Nepali: धार्मिकताको निम्ति दुःख भोग्यौ भने पनि, तिमीहरू धन्यका हौ — CRITICAL risk, requires theologian review — this is the single verse most directly naming the curriculum doctrine “Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake” and must combine two already-Critical/High baseline terms (धार्मिकता + दुःख भोग्नु) without softening either.
- Κύριον δὲ τὸν Χριστὸν ἁγιάσατε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν (3:15) — “sanctify/set apart Christ as Lord in your hearts” (lit. “regard Christ the Lord as holy”). Nepali: ख्रीष्टलाई हृदयमा प्रभुको रूपमा पवित्र मान्नु — Critical; combines प्रभु + पवित्र [both BASELINE REUSE], central Lordship-of-Christ confession language.
μετὰ πραΰτητος καὶ φόβου (3:15-16) — “a defense/answer … with gentleness and respect/fear.” Nepali: बचाउ/जवाफ … नम्रता र आदरका साथ — Medium risk; note the Nepal-specific legal-sensitivity overlay: “always being ready to give a defense” for one’s faith, in a country with current legal restrictions on proselytizing, requires careful framing as a personal testimony-response rather than public solicitation.
- συνείδησις ἀγαθή (3:16, 21) — “a good conscience.” Nepali: असल अन्तस्करण — Medium risk; standard Nepali Christian ethical-theological term.
- Χριστὸς ἅπαξ περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἔπαθεν, δίκαιος ὑπὲρ ἀδίκων (3:18) — “Christ suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous.” ἅπαξ (“once,” “once for all”) — CRITICAL risk; must be rendered एकपल्ट (सदाको निम्ति) to preserve the linear, non-repeatable, sufficient nature of Christ’s suffering — directly opposed to any cyclical or repeated ritual-atonement framework, echoing the same linear-vs-cyclical concern the baseline raises for resurrection/incarnation.
- θανατωθεὶς σαρκί, ζωοποιηθεὶς πνεύματι (3:18) — “put to death in the flesh, made alive in the spirit.” Nepali: शरीरमा मारिनुभयो, आत्मामा जीवित पारियो — Critical; core to both resurrection and incarnation doctrine.
- τοῖς ἐν φυλακῇ πνεύμασιν πορευθεὶς ἐκήρυξεν (3:19) — “having gone, he proclaimed to the spirits in prison.” This is the anchor text of the curriculum doctrine “Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits” and is among the most exegetically disputed passages in the NT (referring variously to fallen angels, the imprisoned dead of Noah’s generation, or Christ’s descent to Hades). πνεύματα here does NOT refer to the Holy Spirit and must be clearly distinguished from पवित्र आत्मा; recommend rendering as आत्माहरू (plural, lower-case referent) with a mandatory translator/teacher note explaining the interpretive options and cautioning against reading this as (a) a “second chance” for salvation after death, or (b) any endorsement of ancestor-spirit communication/mediumship — a live concern given the prevalence of spirit-appeasement and ancestor-veneration practices in Nepali folk religion.
ἐν ἡμέραις Νῶε, κατασκευαζομένης κιβωτοῦ (3:20) — “who formerly did not obey … in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared.”
- ὃ καὶ ὑμᾶς ἀντίτυπον νῦν σῴζει βάπτισμα (3:21) — “baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you.” Nepali: बप्तिस्मा — High risk; established transliterated Nepali term, but this verse’s causal language (“baptism… saves”) requires careful theological framing (immediately qualified by Peter himself as “not the removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a good conscience”) to avoid a mechanical, ritual-efficacy reading disconnected from faith — a live risk given the broader cultural context of ritual purification (shuddhi) practices in Nepali Hindu tradition.
- οὐ σαρκὸς ἀπόθεσις ῥύπου ἀλλὰ συνειδήσεως ἀγαθῆς ἐπερώτημα εἰς Θεόν (3:21) — “not the removal of dirt from the flesh but an appeal to God for a good conscience.” Nepali: शरीरको फोहोर हटाउने काम होइन तर असल अन्तस्करणको निम्ति परमेश्वरसँग बिन्ती — High risk; explicitly and deliberately distinguishes Christian baptism from ritual bodily purification — this contrast should be preserved and even highlighted, not smoothed over, since it is Peter’s own safeguard against a ritualistic misunderstanding.
- διὰ ἀναστάσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, πορευθεὶς εἰς οὐρανὸν, ὅς ἐστιν ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ Θεοῦ (3:21-22) — “through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God.” πυρανυτθαν [BASELINE REUSE] — Critical.
- ἀγγέλων καὶ ἐξουσιῶν καὶ δυνάμεων ὑποταγέντων αὐτῷ (3:22) — “angels, authorities, and powers being subjected to him.” Nepali: स्वर्गदूतहरू, अधिकारीहरू र शक्तिहरू उहाँको अधीनमा — Medium risk; note δυνάμεις here refers to a category of created spiritual powers subject to Christ, NOT God’s own saving power (δύναμις Θεοῦ, 1:5) — शक्ति is acceptable in this specific referent since it is not describing God’s own power (where the baseline forbids शक्ति); a translator note distinguishing the two usages is required to prevent inconsistent enforcement of the forbidden-term rule.
Chapter 4
ὁπλίσασθε τὴν αὐτὴν ἔννοιαν (4:1) — “[Christ] having suffered in the flesh … arm yourselves with the same way of thinking.” त्यही मनसायले सुसज्जित होऔं — High risk; military metaphor extending the suffering doctrine into ethical resolve.
- ἀνθρώπων ἐπιθυμίαις ἀλλὰ θελήματι Θεοῦ (4:2) — “human passions, but the will of God.”
- ἀσελγείαις, ἐπιθυμίαις, οἰνοφλυγίαις, κώμοις, πότοις, ἀθεμίτοις εἰδωλολατρίαις (4:3) — “sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry.” εἰδωλολατρία = मूर्तिपूजा — CRITICAL risk, requires theologian review. मूर्तिपूजा (“idol worship”) names, in plain Nepali, the devotional image-worship (murti puja) central to the daily religious life of Nepal’s Hindu majority and practiced within Newar and Himalayan Buddhist communities as well. Per the PRD mandate against softening doctrinal statements, this term must NOT be diluted or replaced with a vaguer term — Peter’s audience-context (converts out of exactly this religious environment) is directly analogous to many Nepali believers’ own background. Teaching materials must handle this with clear doctrinal fidelity and equally clear pastoral sensitivity, distinguishing the text’s critique of idol-worship as a system from any personal attack on Hindu or Buddhist neighbors and family members.
- βλασφημοῦντες (4:4) — “maligning, blaspheming.” Nepali: निन्दा गर्दै — Low risk.
κρῖναι ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς (4:5) — “will give account to him … [ready] to judge the living and the dead.”
ζῶσι δὲ κατὰ Θεὸν πνεύματι (4:6) — “for this reason the gospel was preached even to the dead, that … they might live according to God in the spirit.” This is one of the most exegetically difficult verses in the letter. It must NOT be taught or translated in a way that implies a universal post-mortem “second chance” for salvation (which would contradict the fixed judgment taught in 4:5 and elsewhere in Scripture); the leading interpretive options (that this refers to those who heard the gospel while alive and have since died, or connects back to the 3:19 proclamation) should be preserved as options for the teacher, not resolved by the translation itself.
- πάντων δὲ τὸ τέλος ἤγγικεν (4:7) — “the end of all things is at hand/has drawn near.” Nepali: सबै कुराको अन्त्य नजिकै आइपुगेको छ — Medium risk; reuses τέλος from 1:9, now in an eschatological-imminence sense — linear, historical end, not a cyclical age-turning (yuga) event.
- σωφρονήσατε καὶ νήψατε εἰς προσευχάς (4:7) — “be self-controlled and sober-minded for prayers.”
- ἡ ἀγάπη καλύπτει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν (4:8) — “love covers a multitude of sins.” Nepali: प्रेमले धेरै पापहरूलाई ढाकिदिन्छ — Medium risk; must not be read as love earning forgiveness of sin (a merit-based misreading) but as love’s practical, relational covering/overlooking of others’ offenses within the church community.
- φιλόξενοι εἰς ἀλλήλους ἄνευ γογγυσμοῦ (4:9) — “hospitable to one another without grumbling.”
ὡς καλοὶ οἰκονόμοι ποικίλης χάριτος Θεοῦ (4:10) — “each as he has received a gift … as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” οἰκονόμος (steward) = भण्डारी — Medium risk, new term.
ὡς ἐξ ἰσχύος ἧς χορηγεῖ ὁ Θεός (4:11) — “as [speaking] the oracles of God … as [serving] by the strength that God supplies.” Nepali: परमेश्वरका वचनझैं … परमेश्वरले दिनुभएको बलले — Medium risk; ἰσχύς (strength/might) here is a distinct Greek word from δύναμις Θεοῦ (baseline’s “power of God,” always सामर्थ्य, never शक्ति). Recommend रendering ἰσχύς as बल (ordinary strength) to keep it visually and doctrinally distinct from सामर्थ्य, preventing over-application of the शक्ति-ban to an unrelated word.
ᾗ ἐστιν ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος (4:11) — “that God may be glorified … to whom belongs the glory and the dominion.” δόξα = महिमा [BASELINE REUSE]; κράτος (dominion, might) = अधिकार/प्रभुत्व — Medium risk, new term, recurs 5:11.
- τῇ ἐν ὑμῖν πυρώσει (4:12) — “the fiery ordeal among you.” (1:6) with fire-refining imagery from 1:7.
- κοινωνεῖτε τοῖς τοῦ Χριστοῦ παθήμασιν (4:13) — “you share/participate in the sufferings of Christ.” κοινωνέω relates to सहभागिता [BASELINE REUSE, fellowship] — Medium-High risk; a striking and important connection — the Nepali church’s lived experience of सहभागिता (fellowship formed under legal restriction, per baseline notes) can be taught as itself a form of sharing in Christ’s sufferings.
τὸ τῆς δόξης καὶ τὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ Πνεῦμα ἐφ᾽ ὑμᾶς ἀναπαύεται (4:14) — “if you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed … the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.”
- φονεύς, κλέπτης, κακοποιός, ἀλλοτριοεπίσκοπος (4:15) — “murderer, thief, evildoer, or meddler.”
- εἰ δὲ ὡς Χριστιανός, μὴ αἰσχυνέσθω, δοξαζέτω δὲ τὸν Θεὸν ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ (4:16) — “but if [one suffers] as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.” Χριστιανός = ख्रीष्टियन — High risk. One of only three NT occurrences of this identity-label. In modern Nepal, publicly self-identifying as ख्रीष्टियन carries real social and, per the baseline’s mission/evangelism doctrine notes, potential legal exposure under the 2017 Muluki Criminal Code’s conversion provisions. The verse’s call not to be ashamed of the name must be taught pastorally alongside real contemporary risk, not merely as historical background.
- ὁ καιρὸς τοῦ ἄρξασθαι τὸ κρίμα ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ Θεοῦ (4:17) — “the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God.” Nepali: परमेश्वरको घरानाबाट न्याय सुरु हुने समय आएको छ — Medium-High risk; οἶκος (household) here anticipates the corporate-family/church imagery, distinct from, but related to, मण्डली [BASELINE REUSE, church].
- εἰ ὁ δίκαιος μόλις σῴζεται, ὁ ἀσεβὴς καὶ ἁμαρτωλὸς ποῦ φανεῖται (4:18, quoting Prov 11:31) — “if the righteous is scarcely saved, where will the ungodly and sinner appear?” δίκαιος/σῴζω/ἁμαρτωλός relate to धार्मिकता / उद्धार / पाप [all BASELINE REUSE] — High risk.
- πιστῷ κτίστῃ παρατιθέσθωσαν τὰς ψυχὰς αὐτῶν (4:19) — “let them entrust their souls to a faithful Creator.” κτίστης (Creator) — High risk, new term. (Creator) must be taught as the sole, personal, sovereign Creator, distinct from Hindu creator-deities within a pantheon (e.g., Brahma) or from an impersonal generative cosmic principle; ψυχάς again रendered प्राण.
Chapter 5
συμπρεσβύτερος (5:1) — “elders … fellow elder.” πρεσβύτερος (elder) = प्राचीन — High risk, requires theologian review. This is the anchor term for the curriculum doctrine “Elders and Humility.” प्राचीन (literally “ancient/senior one”) is the established literal-descriptive rendering, but teaching must make clear this is a functional church office of shepherding responsibility, not a caste-linked or age-based social-honor position, nor equivalent to a Hindu guru/purohit or a village-council elder (panchayat-style local authority structure still culturally resonant in Nepal).
τῆς μελλούσης ἀποκαλύπτεσθαι δόξης κοινωνός (5:1) — “a witness of Christ’s sufferings, … a partaker of the glory that is to be revealed.”
ποίμνιον τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἐπισκοποῦντες (5:2) — “shepherd the flock of God, exercising oversight.” Nepali: परमेश्वरको बगालको गोठालोपन गर, निरीक्षण गर्दै — High risk; ποίμνιον (flock) = बगाल; ἐπισκοπέω (oversee) relates back to 2:25’s ἐπίσκοπος.
μηδὲ αἰσχροκερδῶς ἀλλὰ προθύμως (5:2) — “not under compulsion but willingly … not for shameful gain but eagerly.” लाजमर्दो लोभले होइन तर उत्साहका साथ — Medium-High risk; directly relevant given documented concerns (echoing baseline’s “Christ-Centered Ministry” doctrine note) about visible Nepali Christian leadership sometimes being entangled with NGO/development-funding incentives — this verse’s warning against “shameful gain” has direct contemporary pastoral application.
- μηδ᾽ ὡς κατακυριεύοντες τῶν κλήρων ἀλλὰ τύποι γινόμενοι τοῦ ποιμνίου (5:3) — “not domineering over those in your charge but being examples to the flock.” κατακυριεύω (lord over/dominate) = हुकुम चलाउनु/शासन गर्नु — High risk; a deliberate contrast-term to legitimate submission (ὑποτάσσω) elsewhere in the letter — elder authority is modeled on example, never domination, a critical safeguard against caste-style or patriarchal-authoritarian misapplication.
- φανερωθέντος τοῦ ἀρχιποίμενος κομιεῖσθε τὸν ἀμαράντινον τῆς δόξης στέφανον (5:4) — “when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.” ἀρχιποίμην (chief Shepherd) — High risk, Christological title; Nepali: प्रधान गोठालो. ἀμαράντινος (unfading) reuses the अक्षय-family concept from 1:4; στέφανος (crown) = मुकुट — Low-Medium risk.
- νεώτεροι, ὑποτάγητε πρεσβυτέροις (5:5) — “younger [men], be subject to the elders.” ὑποτάσσω reused — High risk.
- πάντες δὲ ἀλλήλοις τὴν ταπεινοφροσύνην ἐγκομβώσασθε (5:5) — “clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another.” ταπεινοφροσύνη (humility) = नम्रता — High risk, the second anchor term (with elder/प्राचीन) for the “Elders and Humility” doctrine. Given Nepal’s honor-shame social dynamics and historically hierarchical caste-and-status culture, नम्रता must be taught as a positive, Christlike, freely chosen virtue for ALL believers (including leaders), not as enforced lower-caste deference.
- ὁ Θεὸς ὑπερηφάνοις ἀντιτάσσεται, ταπεινοῖς δὲ δίδωσιν χάριν (5:5, quoting Prov 3:34) — “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Low risk.
ὑπὸ τὴν κραταιὰν χεῖρα τοῦ Θεοῦ (5:6) — “humble yourselves … under the mighty hand of God.” Nepali: परमेश्वरको शक्तिशाली हातमुनि आफूलाई नम्र पार — Medium risk; note शक्तिशाली (mighty) here modifies “hand,” a common idiom, and is acceptable despite the general शक्ति caution, since it is not naming “the power of God” as a doctrinal category (δύναμις Θεοῦ) but a descriptive adjective for God’s hand — flag for translator awareness so as not to over-apply the forbidden-term rule mechanically.
- πᾶσαν τὴν μέριμναν ὑμῶν ἐπιρίψαντες ἐπ᾽ αὐτόν, ὅτι αὐτῷ μέλει περὶ ὑμῶν (5:7) — “casting all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.” Nepali: आफ्ना सबै फिक्री उहाँमाथि खसाल, किनकि उहाँ तिमीहरूको वास्ता गर्नुहुन्छ — Low-Medium risk; contrasts God’s personal care with fatalistic resignation (भाग्य), reinforcing baseline’s providence doctrine.
- ὁ ἀντίδικος ὑμῶν διάβολος ὡς λέων ὠρυόμενος περιπατεῖ ζητῶν τινα καταπιεῖν (5:8) — “your adversary the devil prowls like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” διάβολος (devil) = दियाबल — Critical risk. दियाबल is the established Nepali Christian term for the personal, singular, defeated-yet-active adversary Satan. This must be clearly distinguished from the diffuse categories of malevolent spirits, ghosts (bhut-pret), or displeased local deities that populate Nepali folk religion and are addressed through shamanic/exorcistic ritual (jhar-phuk) practice — the biblical devil is a specific, personal being opposed through faith and resistance (ἀντίστητε), not through ritual appeasement or exorcism-for-hire.
- ᾧ ἀντίστητε στερεοὶ τῇ πίστει (5:9) — “resist him, firm/steadfast in your faith.” [BASELINE REUSE] — High risk.
- εἰδότες τὰ αὐτὰ τῶν παθημάτων τῇ ἐν [τῷ] κόσμῳ ὑμῶν ἀδελφότητι ἐπιτελεῖσθαι (5:9) — “knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.”
- ὁ δὲ Θεὸς πάσης χάριτος, ὁ καλέσας ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν αἰώνιον αὐτοῦ δόξαν ἐν Χριστῷ (5:10) — “the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ.” χάρις / καλέω / δόξα [all BASELINE REUSE] — Critical/High.
- αὐτὸς καταρτίσει, στηρίξει, σθενώσει, θεμελιώσει (5:10) — “he himself will restore/perfect, confirm, strengthen, and establish [you].” Nepali: उहाँ आफैले तिमीहरूलाई पुनर्स्थापित, स्थिर, बलियो र दृढ पार्नुहुनेछ — Medium risk; four-verb assurance formula, connects to baseline’s “assurance of salvation” doctrine.
- αὐτῷ τὸ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας (5:11) — “to him be the dominion forever.” κράτος reused from 4:11 — Medium risk.
- διὰ Σιλουανοῦ ὑμῖν τοῦ πιστοῦ ἀδελφοῦ (5:12) — “by Silvanus, [our] faithful brother.” Nepali: विश्वासयोग्य भाई सिलवानसद्वारा — Low risk; proper name सिलवानस, established transliteration.
- παρακαλῶν καὶ ἐπιμαρτυρῶν ταύτην εἶναι ἀληθῆ χάριν τοῦ Θεοῦ (5:12) — “exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God.”
Μᾶρκος ὁ υἱός μου (5:13) — “she who is in Babylon, likewise chosen … Mark, my son.” Βαβυλών (Babylon) — Low risk but requires an explanatory note: used here as a symbolic code-name for Rome, not the literal Mesopotamian city — a distinction worth making explicit given Nepal’s own OT-literacy gap.
- ἀσπάσασθε ἀλλήλους ἐν φιλήματι ἀγάπης (5:14) — “greet one another with a kiss of love.” Nepali: प्रेमको चुम्बनले एकअर्कालाई अभिवादन गर — Low risk doctrinally, but Medium cultural-adaptation note: physical kissing as a greeting is not a common Nepali social custom (a namaste/handshake-based culture); recommend a brief cultural footnote in teaching material rather than altering the translation itself, preserving the text’s instruction while explaining its first-century cultural form.
