Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference Analysis — Galatians (OT/NT, Messianic, Typological, and Cross-Curriculum)
Methodology
Per PRD Phase 1 Step 3, this document catalogs every Old Testament quotation and allusion occurring in every chapter of Galatians (1–6), every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every substantive parallel to the Romans curriculum already translated under the baseline Language Package. Chapters contributing no new cross-reference material beyond what is already logged are explicitly marked “reviewed, no additional entries” per the full-coverage mandate — none occur in this letter, since every chapter of Galatians carries at least one OT citation or typological thread, but the mandate is noted here for completeness and audit purposes.
Citations are normalized as Book Chapter:Verse (e.g., “Galatians 3:6”, “Genesis 15:6”) for machine consistency, with the established Nepali Bible book-name form noted at first occurrence.
Column definitions:
- Passage: the Galatians locus (normalized citation)
- Theme: the doctrinal/thematic category (mapped to curriculum doctrine list where applicable)
- Related Character: the OT/NT figure(s) at the center of the reference
- OT/NT Connection: the specific quoted or alluded text, with citation
- Translation Sensitivity: risk notes for Nepali rendering, cross-referencing
07_semantic_analysis.md/08_core_glossary.mdterm entries and the Romans baseline where relevant
PART 1 — Direct Old Testament Quotations in Galatians
These are formula-introduced or verbatim citations Paul explicitly marks as Scripture (“as it is written,” “the Scripture says,” etc.). Every one of these must be checked against the Romans baseline for prior rendering, since several are quoted identically in Romans and rendering consistency across the two curricula is mandatory (see Part 5 below).
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 3:6 | Justification by Faith; Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | Abraham | Genesis 15:6 — “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness” (quoted identically at Romans 4:3, 4:9, 4:22) | MANDATORY IDENTICAL RENDERING with Romans 4:3. Baseline term imputed_righteousness = आरोपित धार्मिकता is Critical risk; never आर्जित धार्मिकता. This is the single most important shared quotation between the two curricula — any divergence in Nepali wording between the Romans and Galatians renderings would visibly fracture the doctrine of justification for a reader studying both curricula. |
| Galatians 3:8 | Abrahamic Covenant and Promise; Unity of Jews and Gentiles | Abraham; “all the nations” (Gentiles) | Genesis 12:3 / 18:18 / 22:18 — “In you shall all the nations be blessed” | Reuse baseline gentiles = अन्यजाति for “nations” here (Paul’s own Greek ἔθνη echoes the Genesis LXX). Must retain unqualified universality — “all the nations,” not a qualified subset — consistent with the baseline’s universal_scope_of_gospel doctrine note on caste-hierarchy sensitivity. |
| Galatians 3:10 | The Law’s Purpose | — (Mosaic law) | Deuteronomy 27:26 — “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law” | Uses B21 κατάρα = श्राप. Theologian review mandatory per 08_core_glossary.md B21: anchor to the specific Deuteronomic covenant-curse formula, not live Nepali folk-curse belief (dokh, jhankri-curses, boksi-accusations). |
| Galatians 3:11 | Justification by Faith | — | Habakkuk 2:4 — “The righteous shall live by faith” (quoted identically at Romans 1:17, the Romans curriculum’s thesis verse) | MANDATORY IDENTICAL RENDERING with Romans 1:17, per the baseline Instruction Set’s explicit consistency rule: “Same rendering of Romans 1:16–17 across all documents.” The Galatians rendering of this Habakkuk quotation must match verbatim the Nepali wording already fixed for Romans 1:17. Reuse baseline धार्मिकता (righteousness) and विश्वास (faith) exactly. |
| Galatians 3:12 | Law and Grace; The Law’s Purpose | — | Leviticus 18:5 — “The one who does them shall live by them” | Contrastive citation (law-based living vs. faith-based living, v.11). Low collision risk in vocabulary itself; High doctrinal weight because it anchors the Law-vs-Faith antithesis structurally. Render as a plain conditional, avoiding any accidental echo of merit-based “living by one’s deeds” language that could sound like सत्कर्म (meritorious works) framing flagged under B12. |
| Galatians 3:13 | The Law’s Purpose; Crucified with Christ | Christ (as curse-bearer) | Deuteronomy 21:23 — “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree” | Uses B21 श्राप again, now applied directly to Christ. Critical, theologian-mandatory. This is the doctrinal center of the letter’s atonement statement: Christ becomes the curse in the believer’s place. Must be rendered so the curse is clearly a legal-forensic verdict transferred to Christ, not a magical affliction Christ “absorbs” in a shamanic-exorcism sense — a distinction of particular importance given Nepal’s jhankri exorcistic-healing practices, where a shaman’s role is to remove or redirect a curse/affliction, a functionally different transaction than substitutionary penal transfer. |
| Galatians 3:16 | Abrahamic Covenant and Promise; Messianic Promise | Abraham; Christ | Genesis 12:7 / 13:15 / 17:7-8 / 24:7 — the recurring “to you and to your offspring [σπέρμα]” covenant-promise formula | Uses B24 वंश/सन्तान. Critical, theologian-mandatory per 08_core_glossary.md B24: Paul’s argument depends on the Greek noun’s grammatical singularity pointing to one descendant (Christ), a nuance Nepali वंश/सन्तान may not preserve without an explanatory translator’s note. |
| Galatians 3:29 | Abrahamic Covenant and Promise; Adoption and Sonship | Abraham; all believers | Echo of Genesis 15/17 covenant-heir language | Uses B27 उत्तराधिकारी (heir). Ties to baseline adoption doctrine; must retain the equal-inheritance claim regardless of ethnicity, sex, or status (3:28-29 read together). |
| Galatians 4:27 | Freedom in Christ; Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | Sarah (typologically; “the barren one”) | Isaiah 54:1 — “Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear… for the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband” | Applied typologically to the Jerusalem-above/free-woman line of the Hagar-Sarah allegory (see Part 3). Must preserve the OT prophetic-comfort register (originally addressed to exiled Zion) now reapplied to the new-covenant community; avoid a flattened literal reading disconnected from its prophetic-eschatological force. Native speaker review recommended for poetic register. |
| Galatians 4:30 | The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise; Law and Grace | Hagar; Ishmael; Sarah; Isaac | Genesis 21:10 — “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman” | Direct quotation applied typologically (see Part 3 for full Hagar/Sarah typology). Uses δοῦλος-family vocabulary (दास/दासत्व) already flagged High risk (B8) for its resonance with Nepal’s Kamaiya/Kamlari bonded-labor history; the historical Genesis narrative concerns real ancient slavery, and the typological application concerns spiritual bondage under law — both senses must be clear so the verse is not misheard as commentary on any present-day social group. |
| Galatians 5:14 | Faith Working through Love; The Law’s Purpose | — | Leviticus 19:18 — “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (quoted identically at Romans 13:9, and echoed by Christ in the Gospels, e.g., Matthew 22:39) | MANDATORY IDENTICAL RENDERING with Romans 13:9 for the quoted clause itself. Reuse प्रेम (B35, ἀγάπη) with its mandatory contextual anchoring (willed, active, self-giving — not romantic/bhakti-devotional). |
PART 2 — Old Testament Allusions (Non-Formula, Non-Verbatim)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 1:15 | Paul’s Apostleship; Divine Calling | Paul (typology: the prophets) | Allusion to Jeremiah 1:5 (“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you… I appointed you a prophet”) and Isaiah 49:1 (the Servant “called from the womb”) | Reuse baseline called/election (बोलाइएका / परमेश्वरको छनोट) framework exactly per 07_semantic_analysis.md ch.1 notes. High risk: must read as sovereign, pre-natal divine designation, not karma-determined destiny. |
| Galatians 2:6 | Universal Human Accountability; Justification by Faith | — | Allusion to Deuteronomy 10:17 / Leviticus 19:15 (“God shows no partiality”) | Ties to baseline universal_human_accountability (High risk) and the caste-hierarchy sensitivity already documented for Romans 2:11. Must retain unqualified impartiality language — directly relevant given Nepal’s own history of legally codified caste distinction (Muluki Ain, in force until 1963). |
| Galatians 2:16 | Justification by Faith | — | Allusion to Psalm 143:2 (“no one living is righteous before you”) | Underlies Paul’s “no flesh will be justified by works of the law” (πᾶσα σάρξ). Reuse धार्मिकता/धर्मी ठहराइने कार्य exactly; Critical risk per baseline. |
| Galatians 3:19 | The Law’s Purpose | Moses; angels | Allusion to the Sinai theophany tradition (Exodus 19-20; cf. Deuteronomy 33:2 LXX, “angels” mediating the law) | Background allusion, Medium risk. Establishes the Law’s mediated, temporary, subordinate character relative to the direct, unmediated promise given to Abraham — a contrast that must survive translation (the Law came through intermediaries; the promise came directly from God). |
| Galatians 4:1-7 | Adoption and Sonship; The Law’s Purpose | — | Conceptual allusion to ancient household/inheritance law (no single OT text; broader legal-custom background presupposed by Paul’s argument) | Not a direct citation but load-bearing background; flag for a brief explanatory note in teaching materials given low prior exposure to Greco-Roman guardianship custom among Nepali readers, paralleling the παιδαγωγός note (B25). |
| Galatians 4:21-31 | Law and Grace; Freedom in Christ; Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | Hagar; Sarah; Isaac; Ishmael | Sustained allusive typology across Genesis 16, 17:15-21, 21:1-14 | Full typological treatment in Part 3 below. |
| Galatians 5:1 | Freedom in Christ | — | Allusion to the Exodus deliverance-from-slavery motif (Exodus 1-15, esp. Exodus 20:2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery”) | High risk. Paul’s “freedom” language draws its rhetorical force from Israel’s foundational deliverance narrative; must be rendered so स्वतन्त्रता (B7) is heard as an echo of God’s own historic redemptive act, not generic modern political liberty (a live, distinct concept in post-2008 republican Nepal). |
| Galatians 6:7 | The Law’s Purpose; Providence | — | Allusion to the sowing/reaping moral-consequence motif found in Job 4:8, Proverbs 22:8, Hosea 8:7 | Critical risk per B43. Must be anchored to a personal God’s just governance and final judgment (cf. baseline providence doctrine, Romans 8:28/11:33-36), explicitly not the impersonal, cross-lifetime law of karma pervasive in Nepali Hindu/Buddhist folk theology. |
| Galatians 6:16 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles; Church as God’s People | — | Echo of covenant-blessing formulas such as Psalm 125:5 / 128:6 (“peace be upon Israel”) | Reuse baseline israel = इस्राएल exactly; the phrase “Israel of God” (Ἰσραὴλ τοῦ θεοῦ) extends covenant-heir status to the believing community, Jew and Gentile united — ties directly to the baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles High-risk doctrine. |
PART 3 — Messianic References and Typology
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 1:15-16 | Messianic Promise; Paul’s Apostleship | Paul; Christ | Christ’s direct revelation to Paul (Damascus road, narrated in Acts 9); fulfills the prophetic pattern of a called messenger commissioned to reveal God’s Son | Reuse baseline messiah/son_of_god exactly (मसीह / परमेश्वरका पुत्र). Critical risk per baseline; must not be softened toward a generic mystical-experience account. |
| Galatians 3:16 | Messianic Promise; Abrahamic Covenant | Abraham; Christ | Typological/exegetical identification: the singular “seed [σπέρμα] of Abraham” of Genesis 12/13/17/24 is identified as Christ himself, the one true heir of the promise, through whom all who believe (of any ethnicity) become fellow-heirs | Critical risk, see B24. This is the letter’s central messianic-typological argument: Christ is not one option among Abraham’s many descendants but the singular fulfillment-point of the promise. The Nepali rendering must not lose this singularity (see Part 1 above). |
| Galatians 3:13 | Messianic Promise; The Law’s Purpose; Crucified with Christ | Christ | Typological background: the Deuteronomic curse-formula (Deuteronomy 21:23) combined with the sin-bearing/curse-bearing pattern of the Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53) and the scapegoat ritual (Leviticus 16) | Christ’s crucifixion is presented as the messianic curse-bearing act that ends the Law’s condemning power. See Part 1 above (κατάρα/श्राप) for rendering cautions. |
| Galatians 4:4-5 | Messianic Promise; Incarnation; Adoption and Sonship | Christ (the Son); believers (adopted sons) | Fulfillment formula: “God sent forth his Son… born of a woman, born under the law” — echoes Isaiah 7:14/9:6 messianic-birth expectation and Genesis 3:15’s “seed of the woman” | Reuse baseline son_of_god, incarnation (परमेश्वरका पुत्र, देहधारण) exactly. Critical risk; NEVER अवतार — see baseline’s documented royal-avatar collision with Nepal’s Shah-dynasty monarchy, equally applicable here. |
| Galatians 4:21-31 | Law and Grace; Freedom in Christ | Hagar (type: the Sinai covenant/law, earthly Jerusalem, bondage); Ishmael (type: those born “according to the flesh,” i.e., by human effort/self-generated religious status); Sarah (type: the promise/grace covenant, Jerusalem above, freedom); Isaac (type: believers, “children of promise… born according to the Spirit”) | Genesis 16, 17:15-21, 21:1-14 read typologically | Sustained typological unit — Critical risk overall. Every character-pairing in this allegory carries doctrinal freight matching the letter’s central Law/Grace and Slavery/Freedom antitheses. Nepali rendering must (a) preserve Paul’s own interpretive framing (“this is figurative,” ἀλληγορούμενα, B30) so readers understand Paul is reading the narrative typologically, not simply retelling Genesis; (b) avoid any implication that ethnic descent from Hagar/Ishmael (traditionally associated in later interpretive history with Arab peoples) carries pejorative present-day ethnic content — the typology is about covenant-basis (law vs. promise), not ethnicity; theologian review required to ensure the teaching material makes this distinction explicit for a Nepali audience with limited prior exposure to the Genesis narrative background. |
| Galatians 5:22-23 | Fruit of the Spirit | — | Echo/contrast with OT wisdom-virtue lists (e.g., Proverbs) and prophetic hope for an obedient, Spirit-indwelt people (Ezekiel 36:26-27, “I will give you a new heart… and put my Spirit within you”) | Ties Paul’s Spirit-fruit list to the OT new-covenant hope of an inwardly transformed, Spirit-indwelt people, fulfilled now in Christ. Medium/High risk; reinforces that these virtues are prophetically-promised gifts, not self-cultivated achievements. |
| Galatians 6:15-16 | Circumcision and the New Creation | — | Echoes prophetic new-creation/new-heavens-new-earth hope (Isaiah 65:17, 66:22) now inaugurated, not merely future | See 08_core_glossary.md B44. Critical risk; theologian review mandatory. |
PART 4 — Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage Confirmation
Per the full-book-coverage mandate, every chapter’s OT/NT cross-reference content is accounted for above:
- Chapter 1: Covered — Jeremiah 1:5/Isaiah 49:1 allusion (1:15); messianic revelation (1:15-16). No additional entries.
- Chapter 2: Covered — Deuteronomy 10:17/Leviticus 19:15 allusion (2:6); Psalm 143:2 allusion (2:16). No additional entries beyond the core-passage treatment already given full verse-by-verse handling in
07_semantic_analysis.mdPart 1. - Chapter 3: Covered — the letter’s highest concentration of direct OT citations (Genesis 15:6; 12:3/18:18/22:18; Deuteronomy 27:26; Habakkuk 2:4; Leviticus 18:5; Deuteronomy 21:23; Genesis 12:7/13:15/17:7-8/24:7); Sinai-mediation allusion (3:19). No additional entries.
- Chapter 4: Covered — household/inheritance-law background (4:1-7); fulfillment formula echoing Isaiah 7:14/9:6 and Genesis 3:15 (4:4-5); the full Hagar/Sarah typological unit (4:21-31) including the Isaiah 54:1 and Genesis 21:10 direct quotations. No additional entries.
- Chapter 5: Covered — Exodus deliverance-motif allusion (5:1); Leviticus 19:18 direct quotation (5:14); Ezekiel 36:26-27 new-covenant Spirit-hope echo (5:22-23). No additional entries.
- Chapter 6: Covered — Job 4:8/Proverbs 22:8/Hosea 8:7 sowing-reaping allusion (6:7); Isaiah 65:17/66:22 new-creation echo (6:15-16); Psalm 125:5/128:6 covenant-blessing echo (6:16). No additional entries.
No chapter of Galatians is without load-bearing OT/typological content; every chapter is therefore represented above with primary-source entries rather than a “reviewed, no new terms” notation.
PART 5 — Cross-Curriculum Parallels to Romans, with Rendering-Consistency Rules
Galatians and Romans share Paul’s single, consistent theology of justification by faith, and several passages quote the identical Old Testament text or restate near-identical doctrinal formulas. Because both curricula are translated under the same Nepali Language Package, the following rendering-consistency rules are mandatory and extend the baseline Instruction Set’s existing consistency rules (see 12_ai_translation_requirements.md, “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents”) to this new curriculum.
| Galatians Passage | Romans Parallel | Shared Content | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 3:6 | Romans 4:3, 4:9, 4:22 | Identical quotation of Genesis 15:6 | MUST render identically. Use the fixed Nepali wording already established for Romans 4:3, including आरोपित धार्मिकता for the imputed-righteousness clause. Any Phase 2 worker translating Galatians 3:6 must load the Romans 4:3 segment cache before finalizing this verse. |
| Galatians 3:11 | Romans 1:17 | Identical quotation of Habakkuk 2:4, “The righteous shall live by faith” | MUST render identically, per the baseline’s own explicit rule: “Same rendering of Romans 1:16–17 across all documents. This is the thesis statement of the curriculum; must be identical.” This rule is hereby extended to every future curriculum quoting this verse, including Galatians. |
| Galatians 5:14 | Romans 13:9 | Identical quotation of Leviticus 19:18, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” | MUST render identically for the quoted clause; surrounding argument may differ by context (Galatians: fulfilling the whole law through love vs. legalistic observance; Romans: love as summary of the second-table commandments), but the quoted words themselves must match verbatim. |
| Galatians 2:16 (ἔργα νόμου, δικαιοῦται) | Romans 3:20, 3:28 | Shared doctrinal formula: “works of the law” cannot justify | Reuse baseline धर्मी ठहराइने कार्य exactly for justification-verb forms; reuse new term व्यवस्थाका कामहरू (B12) consistently for “works of the law” wherever it recurs in Galatians (2:16 ×3, 3:2, 3:5, 3:10). Recommend this term also be considered for retroactive addition to a shared cross-curriculum glossary if Romans is ever re-issued with this exact English phrase distinguished from general νόμος. |
| Galatians 2:19-20 (συνεσταύρωμαι) | Romans 6:1-11 (συνετάφημεν, “buried with,” συνεσταυρώθη) | Shared union-with-Christ-in-death theology | Reuse baseline christian_identity_in_christ doctrine framework; render ख्रीष्टसँगै क्रुसमा टाँगिएको (B18) consistently with any existing Romans 6 rendering of “crucified with him” (συνεσταυρώθη, Romans 6:6) so the two passages read as the same doctrine in the reader’s mind. |
| Galatians 4:5-6 (υἱοθεσία, Ἀββά ὁ πατήρ) | Romans 8:15-17 (υἱοθεσία, Ἀββά ὁ πατήρ) | Identical adoption/Abba-Father vocabulary | Reuse baseline दत्तक पुत्रता and अब्बा/पिता exactly; per the baseline’s note on Romans 8:15, preserve the Aramaic transliteration अब्बा with the same brief explanatory gloss on its filial intimacy used in the Romans materials. |
| Galatians 5:16-24 (σάρξ vs. πνεῦμα) | Romans 8:1-13 (σάρξ vs. πνεῦμα) | Shared flesh/Spirit dualism | Reuse शरीर (B15) with the same explanatory caution against body-as-illusion, ascetic-denial, and matter/spirit-dualism readings already required for Romans 8. Ensure any glossary note distinguishing σάρξ’s neutral sense (Galatians 2:20, 4:13-14; cf. Romans 8:3’s “in the flesh”) from its moral sense (Galatians 5; Romans 8:5-9) is shared identically between the two curricula’s supplementary materials. |
| Galatians 3:26-29 (οὐκ ἔνι Ἰουδαῖος οὐδὲ Ἕλλην…) | Romans 3:29-30; 10:12 (no distinction between Jew and Greek) | Shared unity-of-Jew-and-Gentile universalism | Reuse baseline unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine note on caste-hierarchy sensitivity (Muluki Ain) exactly; retain full, unqualified universality in both curricula without softening. |
| Galatians 4:27 | Romans 9:6-9 (Isaac as child of promise, contrasted with mere physical descent) | Shared Genesis/Isaiah typology of the promise-child versus flesh-born child | Ensure the Isaac/promise-versus-flesh contrast is rendered with parallel vocabulary in both curricula: “according to the flesh” (κατὰ σάρκα) consistently as शारीरिक रूपमा/शरीरअनुसार, and “according to the Spirit/promise” (κατὰ πνεῦμα / κατ᾽ ἐπαγγελίαν) consistently as आत्माअनुसार/प्रतिज्ञाअनुसार. |
| Galatians 6:2 (νόμος τοῦ Χριστοῦ) | Romans 13:8-10 (love fulfills the law) | Shared “law fulfilled through love” theology | Reuse baseline व्यवस्था for νόμος exactly; render ख्रीष्टको व्यवस्था (B42) so it reads as a direct echo of Romans 13:8-10’s own resolution of the law-through-love theme, not as a reversion to legal code. |
General Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared OT Quotations (Galatians ↔ Romans)
- Before translating any Galatians segment containing a direct OT quotation, the Phase 2 worker must check whether the identical verse is quoted in the Romans curriculum (see table above) and, if so, load that segment’s finalized Nepali wording before proceeding.
- Where the same Greek/Hebrew text is quoted in both letters but the Romans translation has already been finalized, the Galatians rendering of the quoted clause itself is fixed to match; only Paul’s surrounding argument (which may differ) is translated fresh.
- Any apparent need to deviate from a previously-fixed Romans rendering when translating the same OT quotation in Galatians must be flagged for human theologian review rather than resolved unilaterally by the AI system, per the baseline’s ambiguity-handling and escalation rules.
- New cross-curriculum shared terms identified in this document (works of the law, crucified with Christ, flesh vs. Spirit, adoption/Abba) should be proposed for consolidation into a single master glossary spanning both Romans and Galatians translation_memory.json files in a future infrastructure update, to prevent independent drift between curricula translated by different Phase 2 workers.
This document extends, and must be read alongside, 07_semantic_analysis.md (term-level detail) and 08_core_glossary.md (glossary consolidation). See 10_biblical_theme_map.md for the letter’s broader thematic architecture.
