Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: 3 John (Full-Book Coverage)
Scope Note
3 John contains a single chapter of 14 verses. The core passage for this curriculum (3 John 1:1-14) is therefore identical to the full book. “Full-book coverage” here means verse-by-verse accounting across the entire 14 verses, not merely the doctrines selected as curriculum headline topics. Section A presents the doctrine matrix. Section B gives cross-passage notes. Section C is the explicit verse-by-verse coverage ledger required by the PRD mandate, confirming every verse has been reviewed and mapped to a doctrine (or explicitly marked as contributing no new doctrinal or terminological content).
A. Doctrine Matrix (10 Doctrines — Consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json v1)
| # | Doctrine | Key Terms | Supporting Passages (3 John) | Risk Level | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Truth and Christian Fellowship | truth (सत्य), true, love (प्रेम), soul (प्राण), joy, brothers, friends, walk | 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 1:8 | Critical | Dual collision risk: (a) सत्य collides with Hindu सत्य/सत्याग्रह as a cardinal cosmic-ethical virtue and Buddhist चत्वारि आर्य सत्यानि (Four Noble Truths) — ἀλήθεια here is the specific, personal gospel reality in Christ, not an impersonal cosmic principle or ethical discipline; (b) ψυχή (“soul,” v.2) must render as प्राण, never आत्मा, to avoid Vedantic Ātman/Brahman identity doctrine, Buddhist अनात्मन् (no-self), and confusion with पवित्र आत्मा (Holy Spirit, a Critical baseline term). | Human theologian |
| 2 | Imitating Good rather than Evil | imitate, evil (general), good (general), doer of good/evil, “is of God” clause | 1:11 | Critical | The clause “the one who does good is of God” is exceptionally vulnerable to a merit-transaction reading in Nepali — good deeds producing or earning divine belonging — precisely the पुण्य (accumulated religious merit) framework shared by Nepali Hindu and Buddhist ethics already flagged in the baseline for “grace” and “imputed righteousness.” Must be taught as fruit/evidence of a prior relationship with God, never a means of acquiring it. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | stranger/guest, send forward, worthy of God, receive/support, fellow worker, obligation | 1:5, 1:6, 1:7, 1:8 | High | Nepal’s dominant hospitality ideal “अतिथि देवो भव” (the guest is as a god) risks being silently imported into this passage. Biblical hospitality here is grounded in gospel partnership and measured against God’s own worth (v.6), not a guest’s quasi-divine status or the host’s accumulated merit; this distinction must be taught explicitly. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes) | elder, one who loves to be first, works/deeds, malicious speech, slander, forbid/hinder, cast out/expel, receive/welcome | 1:9, 1:10 | High | φιλοπρωτεύων has no single-word Nepali equivalent; a purely descriptive phrase risks reading as neutral ambition rather than sinful self-exaltation in a culture with strong rank-consciousness. ἐκβάλλω (“cast out”) must not be softened — it names unilateral expulsion of believers from the congregation, the letter’s gravest leadership-abuse warning. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius) | testify/testimony, truth, true, faithful (of a deed) | 1:12 | High | The threefold testimony structure (everyone, the truth itself, John) requires गवाही दिनु/गवाही to be rendered identically at every occurrence across the letter (vv.3, 6, 12) so the escalating pattern of commendation remains visible. सत्य personified as a witness here carries the same collision risk documented for Doctrine 1. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Apostolic Authority and Pastoral Care | elder, spiritual children, remind/confront | 1:1, 1:4, 1:10 | High | प्राचीन must name a functional, servant-shaped apostolic office exercised through personal relationship and in-person correction (v.10), not a hereditary or ritual religious-authority title; a careless rendering could collapse into गुरु/पुरोहित status categories familiar from Nepal’s temple and monastic traditions, misrepresenting both John’s authority and its contrast with Diotrephes’s abuse of a similar office. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Christian Identity and the Name of Christ | the Name, Gentiles | 1:7 | High | ὄνομα (“the Name”) is early-church technical shorthand for Christ’s own identity and authority (cf. Acts 5:41). A generic rendering as merely “name” or “reputation” strips the phrase of Christological force and could wrongly suggest ministers traveled for their own or an institution’s name rather than for Christ’s sake. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Moral Evidence of Relationship with God | has (not) seen God, evil (general), good (general) | 1:11 | High | ”Has not seen God” must avoid दर्शन-based vocabulary — the living Hindu devotional practice of ritually “seeing” and being seen by a deity’s image at shrines such as Pashupatinath. The verse concerns relational knowledge of God evidenced by moral character, not ritual theophany. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Spiritual Parentage and Pastoral Joy | spiritual children, joy | 1:4 | Medium | आनन्द mildly collides with the Vedantic सत्-चित्-आनन्द description of Brahman’s bliss-nature; risk is low in this relationally-anchored pastoral usage, but the rendering must not drift toward describing an impersonal metaphysical state. | Native speaker review |
| 10 | Christian Greeting and Peace | peace, friends | 1:13, 1:14 | Low | Standard epistolary closing. शान्ति (reused from baseline) and मित्रहरू carry minimal doctrinal risk; अभिवादन गर्नु is deliberately preferred over नमस्कार to avoid its Hindu devotional folded-hands connotation of acknowledging divinity in the person greeted. | Automated review |
Risk Summary (must match assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json exactly): Critical: 2 · High: 6 · Medium: 1 · Low: 1 · Total requiring theologian review: 8 · Total requiring native speaker review: 1 · Total automated-only: 1
B. Cross-Passage and Structural Notes
- Threefold testimony pattern (v.12): “everyone,” “the truth itself,” and “we [John]” all testify to Demetrius. This structure is doctrinally load-bearing (Doctrine 5) and must use one consistent Nepali verb/noun pair for “testify/testimony” throughout the letter (vv.3, 6, 12), not merely within v.12, so a Nepali reader can trace the escalation across the whole document.
- Contrastive pairing of Gaius/Demetrius vs. Diotrephes: The letter is structured as two positive exemplars (Doctrines 3, 5, 9) bracketing one negative exemplar (Doctrine 4). Translation choices for ἐπιδέχομαι (“receive/welcome,” used of both the positive reception implied of Gaius and the negative refusal by Diotrephes, vv.9-10) must be rendered identically in both directions so the contrast remains visible in Nepali, per the note already flagged in the Core Glossary (08, Section B.2).
- “Is of God” clause (v.11) and merit theology: This is the single highest-risk clause in the letter for the Nepali context (Doctrine 2, Critical) and must be cross-checked against the baseline’s existing grace/imputed-righteousness merit-collision guidance (translation_memory.json: grace, imputed_righteousness) to ensure doctrinal consistency across the whole curriculum library, not only within 3 John.
- The Name (v.7) and Mission to the Nations: Doctrine 7 intersects with the baseline’s existing “mission” and “evangelism” doctrine entries (Romans registry) — ministers went out “for the sake of the Name” among the Gentiles. Reviewers should note this thematic link but must not import Romans’ evangelism-specific legal-risk framing wholesale, since 3 John’s concern is hospitality toward already-active traveling ministers, not the act of proclamation itself.

Coverage confirmation: All 14 verses of 3 John have been reviewed. Verse 1:13 introduces no new theological vocabulary or doctrine beyond the epistolary closing convention already assigned to Doctrine 10, and is explicitly noted here rather than silently omitted, per the PRD full-book-coverage mandate.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Imitating Good rather than Evil
Nepali name: खराबको सट्टा असलको अनुकरण
Key terms: imitate, evil_general, good_general, doer_of_good_evil, is_of_god_clause
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: the clause ‘the one who does good is of God’ (v.11) is exceptionally vulnerable in Nepali to a merit-transaction reading — good deeds producing or earning divine belonging — precisely the पुण्य (accumulated religious merit) framework shared by Nepali Hindu and Buddhist ethics that the baseline already flags for ‘grace’ and ‘imputed righteousness.’ Must be taught as describing the fruit/evidence of a prior new-birth relationship with God, never a means of acquiring it.
Truth and Christian Fellowship
Nepali name: सत्य र मसीही सहभागिता
Key terms: truth, true, love, soul, joy, brothers, friends, walk
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, dual-collision doctrine: (1) सत्य (truth) collides with Hindu सत्य/सत्याग्रह as a cardinal cosmic-ethical virtue and with Buddhist चत्वारि आर्य सत्यानि (Four Noble Truths) — ἀλήθεια in 3 John is the specific, personal gospel reality in Christ, not an impersonal cosmic principle. (2) ψυχή (soul, v.2) must never be rendered आत्मा, which collides with the Hindu Vedantic Ātman (self identified with Brahman) and the Buddhist अनात्मन्/anatta (‘no-self’) doctrine central to Nepal’s Newar and Himalayan Buddhist communities, and would also risk confusion with पवित्र आत्मा (the Holy Spirit). प्राण is required.
High Risk Doctrines
Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Nepali name: यात्रा गर्ने सेवकहरूप्रतिको अतिथि-सेवा
Key terms: stranger_guest, send_forward, worthy_of_god, receive_support, fellow_worker, obligation
Review routing: Human theologian
Nepal’s dominant Hindu-heritage hospitality ideal, popularly summarized as ‘अतिथि देवो भव’ (the guest is as a god) and reinforced in national tourism messaging, risks being read into this passage by default. Biblical hospitality here is grounded in gospel partnership and measured against God’s own worth (v.6, ‘worthy of God’), not a guest’s quasi-divine status or accumulated hosting merit; this distinction must be taught explicitly rather than assumed.
Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
Nepali name: मण्डली अगुवाइ र घमण्ड (दियोत्रफेस)
Key terms: elder, loves_to_be_first, works_deeds, malicious_speech, slander, forbid_hinder, cast_out_expel, receive_welcome
Review routing: Human theologian
φιλοπρωτεύων (‘loves to be first’) has no single-word Nepali equivalent, and any purely descriptive rendering risks reading as neutral leadership ambition rather than sinful self-exaltation, especially given rank-consciousness embedded in Nepali social hierarchy. ἐκβάλλω (‘cast out’) must not be softened; unilateral expulsion of believers from the congregation is the letter’s most severe warning against authoritarian church leadership.
Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius)
Nepali name: विश्वासनीय गवाहीको प्रशंसा (देमेत्रियस)
Key terms: testify_testimony, truth, true, faithful_deed
Review routing: Human theologian
The threefold testimony structure (from everyone, from the truth itself, and from John) requires गवाही दिनु/गवाही to be rendered identically at every occurrence across the letter (vv.3, 6, 12) so the escalating commendation pattern remains visible in Nepali. सत्य (truth) personified as a witness in this verse carries the same Hindu सत्य/सत्याग्रह and Buddhist Four Noble Truths collision risk documented for the Truth doctrine below.
Apostolic Authority and Pastoral Care
Nepali name: प्रेरितीय अधिकार र पास्टरीय हेरचाह
Key terms: elder, spiritual_children, remind_confront
Review routing: Human theologian
प्राचीन (elder) names a functional, servant-shaped apostolic office exercised through personal relationship and in-person correction (v.10), not a hereditary or ritual religious-authority title; rendering it in a way that collapses into गुरु/पुरोहित status categories familiar from Nepal’s temple and monastic traditions would misrepresent the nature of the authority being exercised and contrasted with Diotrephes’s abuse of it.
Christian Identity and the Name of Christ
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टको नाउँमा मसीही परिचय
Key terms: the_name, gentiles
Review routing: Human theologian
ὄνομα (‘the Name,’ v.7) is early-church technical shorthand for Christ’s own identity and authority (cf. Acts 5:41); a generic rendering as merely ‘name’ or ‘reputation’ would strip the phrase of its Christological force and could wrongly suggest ministers traveled for their own or an institution’s name rather than for Christ’s sake specifically.
Moral Evidence of Relationship with God
Nepali name: परमेश्वरसँगको सम्बन्धको नैतिक प्रमाण
Key terms: has_seen_god, evil_general, good_general
Review routing: Human theologian
‘Has not seen God’ (v.11) must not be rendered with दर्शन-based vocabulary, the living Hindu devotional practice of ritually ‘seeing’ and being seen by a deity’s image at temples such as Pashupatinath; this verse concerns relational knowledge of God evidenced by moral character, not ritual theophany.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Spiritual Parentage and Pastoral Joy
Nepali name: आत्मिक पितृत्व र पास्टरीय आनन्द
Key terms: spiritual_children, joy
Review routing: Native speaker review
आनन्द (joy) mildly collides with the Vedantic सत्-चित्-आनन्द description of Brahman’s bliss-nature; risk is low in this relationally-anchored pastoral usage but native speaker review should confirm the rendering does not drift toward describing an impersonal metaphysical state.
Low Risk Doctrines
Christian Greeting and Peace
Nepali name: मसीही अभिवादन र शान्ति
Key terms: peace, friends
Review routing: Automated review
Standard epistolary closing; शान्ति (REUSED FROM BASELINE) and मित्रहरू carry minimal doctrinal risk here, though अभिवादन गर्नु (greet) is deliberately preferred over नमस्कार to avoid its Hindu devotional folded-hands connotation of acknowledging divinity in the person greeted.
