Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: 2 Peter
1. Purpose and Method
This document maps every doctrine load-bearing to 2 Peter 1-3 against its supporting passages, assigned risk tier, the specific Nepali-context translation risk, and the review routing tier established by the baseline Romans package (Critical/High → human theologian; Medium → native speaker; Low → automated). The seven curriculum doctrines named in the project parameters are each expanded into their constituent doctrinal sub-claims, matching the granularity already fixed in doctrine_risk_registry.json. No new doctrine is introduced here that is not already present in that registry; this document is the narrative/matrix companion to it.
2. Full Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine (curriculum cluster) | Sub-Doctrine / Nepali Name | Supporting Passages (2 Peter) | Risk | Translation Risk Notes (Nepal-specific) | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture | The Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture — पवित्रशास्त्रको भरोसायोग्यता र प्रेरणा | 1:16, 1:19-21, 3:2, 3:16 | Critical | Apostolic testimony rests on verified eyewitness history and Spirit-carried prophetic writing, not “cunningly devised myths” (never पुराण-rooted vocabulary) and not a Hindu śruti or Buddhist sūtra model of sacred origination. φερόμενοι (“carried along”) must be distinguished from jhākri shamanic trance/possession, in which the human agent’s consciousness is displaced; biblical inspiration preserves full authorial mind and voice. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture | Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony — प्रेरितहरूको प्रत्यक्षदर्शी गवाही | 1:16-18 | High | The Transfiguration is presented as verifiable, historical, sensory testimony (sight and hearing), not a private mystical vision or a devotee’s meditative darshan-experience of divine radiance. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture | Right Handling of Scripture — पवित्रशास्त्रको सही व्याख्या | 3:15-16 | Medium | The warning against twisting difficult Scripture concerns doctrinal distortion by the unstable, not a caution against ordinary personal Bible reading — a distinction that matters for a young, recently literate Nepali church actively encouraged toward direct Scripture engagement. | Native speaker review |
| 4 | Certainty of Christ’s Return | Sonship of Christ — ख्रीष्टको पुत्रत्व | 1:17 | Critical | The Father’s own voice declares Christ’s unique, eternal Sonship at the Transfiguration. Must not soften into metaphorical, adoptive, or honorary sonship, and must not be read through the Himalayan Buddhist tulku framework of recognized reincarnate lineage-holders present among Nepal’s Himalayan communities. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Certainty of Christ’s Return | Deity of Christ — ख्रीष्टको ईश्वरत्व | 1:1, 1:11, 1:17, 3:18 | Critical | 2 Peter 1:1’s single-article Greek construction (“our God and Savior Jesus Christ”) grammatically identifies Jesus as fully God; punctuation must not split God and Savior into two referents. Majesty (μεγαλειότης) must avoid प्रताप, the term historically applied to the divine-royal majesty of Nepal’s Shah-dynasty kings, venerated as living avatars of Vishnu until the monarchy’s 2008 abolition. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Certainty of Christ’s Return | The Certainty of Christ’s Return — ख्रीष्टको आगमनको निश्चयता | 1:16, 3:3-4, 3:12 | Critical | παρουसia (आगमन) is the epistle’s eschatological backbone, guaranteed by the Transfiguration and disputed by scoffers. Must never be shaded toward अवतार-language describing a repeatable royal or divine descent — the doctrine attached to Nepal’s monarchy within living memory — since Peter describes a singular, certain, future, visible, personal return of the same historical Christ. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Growing in Christian Virtue | Growing in Christian Virtue — मसीही सद्गुणमा वृद्धि | 1:3-8 | High | The virtue chain risks two simultaneous collisions: ἀρετή/γνῶσις terms (सद्गुण, ज्ञान) must avoid the Sāṅkhya triguna and jñāna-mārga/prajñā frameworks, and εὐσέβεια (ईश्वरभक्ति) must avoid implying a meritorious bhakti path among several paths to liberation. All virtue is grace-response, not merit accumulation. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Growing in Christian Virtue | Divine Calling and Election — परमेश्वरको बोलावट र छनोट | 1:10 | High | God’s sovereign call and choice, confirmed by a growing life of virtue, must be distinguished from karma-determined destiny shared by both Nepali Hindu and Buddhist frameworks; consistent with the baseline’s effectual_calling entry. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Growing in Christian Virtue | Growth in Grace and Knowledge — अनुग्रह र ज्ञानमा वृद्धि | 3:18 | Medium | The closing exhortation pairs अनुग्रह (already Critical-guarded against पुण्य/भाग्य) with ज्ञान (Critical-guarded against jñāna-mārga/prajñā); both established glosses must appear together in this passage. | Native speaker review |
| 10 | Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption | Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption — ईश्वरीय स्वभावको सहभागिता र भ्रष्टताबाट उद्धार | 1:3-4, 2:12, 2:19 | Critical | ”Partakers of the divine nature” is the single most theologically dangerous phrase in the epistle for Nepal: it directly collides with Advaita Vedānta’s Ātman-Brahman identity doctrine, Buddhist tathāgatagarbha/Buddha-nature teaching, and bhakti traditions of becoming “one with” a chosen deity. Must render with स्वभाव (character/nature), never तत्व (metaphysical essence); mandatory teaching note required affirming moral/relational participation in God’s holy character through Christ, never ontological merger. Corruption (φθορά) must use विनाश, not क्षय, avoiding the Buddhist anicca/impermanence frame. | Human theologian |
| 11 | False Teachers and Their Judgment | False Teachers and Their Judgment — झूटा शिक्षकहरू र तिनीहरूको न्याय | 2:1-3, 2:10-19 | High | Given Nepal’s 2017 Muluki Criminal Code provisions restricting religious conversion/proselytizing, teaching on false teachers must be framed strictly as internal doctrinal discernment within the Christian community, never language readable as inciting conflict with adherents of other religious traditions. αἵρεσις ἀπωλείας must avoid पाखण्ड, a term loaded with historic Hindu inter-school polemic. | Human theologian |
| 12 | False Teachers and Their Judgment | Redemption and Christ’s Ownership — उद्धार र ख्रीष्टको स्वामित्व | 2:1 | Medium | δεσπότης (मालिक) emphasizes Christ’s ownership-right by purchase, distinct from general Lordship (प्रभु/κύριος) language; the doctrinal point that denying this ownership is a particularly grave sin must be preserved. | Native speaker review |
| 13 | False Teachers and Their Judgment | Judgment of Fallen Angels — पाप गर्ने स्वर्गदूतहरूको न्याय | 2:4 | Critical | ταρταρόω must never be rendered as bare नरक, since Hindu and Buddhist cosmology commonly treat naraka as a temporary purgatorial realm within an ongoing rebirth cycle from which souls eventually depart — directly contradicting this imprisonment’s finality pending judgment. A descriptive rendering (chains of darkness / a bound prison) is required, or नरक must carry a mandatory distinguishing note. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment — प्रभुको दिन र अन्तिम न्याय | 3:5-13 | Critical | The Day of the Lord is a single, final, linear act of cosmic judgment and renewal (paralleling the historical Flood), sharply distinguished from Hindu cosmology’s cyclical cosmic dissolution/recreation (pralaya, recurring across kalpas/yugas) and from Buddhist kalpa-cycle cosmology. στοιχεῖα (तत्वहरू) must stay strictly physical, avoiding the Vedāntic tattva metaphysical system; mandatory teaching note wherever 3:7-13 is taught. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | New Heavens and New Earth — नयाँ आकाश र नयाँ पृथ्वी | 3:13-14 | High | The promised final renewal is a single, linear, one-time re-creation after judgment, not an endless creation-dissolution-recreation cycle as in Hindu pralaya cosmology. धार्मिकता must be reused exactly (never धर्म) as the moral order of the renewed creation. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | Creation and God’s Sovereignty over History — सृष्टि र इतिहासमा परमेश्वरको सार्वभौमिकता | 3:4-6 | Low | Standard vocabulary (सृष्टि, जलप्रलय) carries only a minor risk from प्रलय’s cyclical Hindu cosmological association; flagged for awareness since context clearly indicates a single historical event, not a Critical collision. | Automated review |
| 17 | Patience of God’s Timing | Patience of God’s Timing — परमेश्वरको समयको धीरज | 3:8-9, 3:15 | High | God’s delay in judgment is personal, purposeful forbearance aimed at repentance, not an impersonal cosmic schedule, fatalistic भाग्य, or the law of karma shared by Hindu and Buddhist frameworks. μακροθυμία must always pair with परमेश्वरको/प्रभुको to distinguish it from human ὑπομονή (chapter 1). | Human theologian |
| 18 | Patience of God’s Timing | Salvation — उद्धार | 3:9, 3:15 | Critical | CRITICAL, DUAL-FRONT per baseline: never मुक्ति/मोक्ष (Hindu liberation from rebirth) and never निर्वाण (Buddhist cessation of craving and self). 2 Peter 3:15 frames God’s patience itself as salvation-oriented — deliverance by a personal God who desires repentance, not release from an impersonal cycle. | Human theologian |
Risk tier totals (must match doctrine_risk_registry.json): Critical = 8; High = 6; Medium = 3; Low = 1. Total doctrines = 18. Theologian review required = 14; native speaker review = 3; automated only = 1.
3. Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage Confirmation
Chapter 1 (1:1-15 epistolary opening and virtue chain; 1:16-21 core passage)
Doctrines present: Deity of Christ (1:1, 1:11), Growing in Christian Virtue (1:3-8), Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption (1:3-4), Divine Calling and Election (1:10), Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture / Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony (1:16-18), Sonship of Christ (1:17), Certainty of Christ’s Return (1:16), and the inspiration-of-Scripture doctrine proper (1:19-21). This chapter carries the highest doctrinal density in the epistle and anchors the core passage. Fully analyzed above; no gaps.
Chapter 2 (false teachers, judgment of fallen angels, historical judgment types)
Doctrines present: False Teachers and Their Judgment (2:1-3, 2:10-19), Redemption and Christ’s Ownership (2:1), Judgment of Fallen Angels (2:4), and supporting judgment-type material (Flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot, Balaam — proper names only, Low risk, see glossary §9). Fully analyzed above; no gaps.
Chapter 3 (scoffers, Day of the Lord, God’s patience, closing exhortation)
Doctrines present: Certainty of Christ’s Return (3:3-4, 3:12), Creation and God’s Sovereignty over History (3:4-6), Patience of God’s Timing (3:8-9), Salvation (3:9, 3:15), Day of the Lord and Final Judgment (3:5-13), New Heavens and New Earth (3:13-14), Right Handling of Scripture (3:15-16), and Growth in Grace and Knowledge (3:18). Fully analyzed above; no gaps.
Coverage statement: All three chapters of 2 Peter have been reviewed in full. No chapter is without load-bearing theological content; every doctrine in the matrix above is traceable to specific verses across chapters 1–3, and none is scoped narrowly to the core passage alone. This matrix is fully consistent with, and introduces no doctrine or risk tier not already present in, assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json.
4. Cross-Curriculum Consistency Notes
- All Critical terms shared with the Romans baseline (परमेश्वर, येशू, प्रभु, पवित्र आत्मा, धार्मिकता, उद्धार, अनुग्रह, पुनरुत्थान-adjacent resurrection vocabulary) are reused exactly; no Nepali rendering established for Romans is altered here.
- New Critical/High doctrines specific to 2 Peter (Divine Nature/Escaping Corruption, Judgment of Fallen Angels, Certainty of Christ’s Return as a discrete doctrine, Day of the Lord and Final Judgment) extend the baseline’s existing collision-avoidance logic (avatar theology, karma/moksha/nirvana, dharma-as-caste-law, tattva metaphysics) rather than introducing a new framework.
- The
deity_of_christdoctrine’s caution against प्रताप is a new forbidden-term-class recommendation not present in the baseline Romans forbidden list and should be proposed for addition to the destination-language forbidden-substitution table in Phase 2.
This document is the companion narrative to assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (2 Peter version) and must be read together with it and with analysis/08_core_glossary.md.
Critical Risk Doctrines
The Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture
Nepali name: पवित्रशास्त्रको भरोसायोग्यता र प्रेरणा
Key terms: scripture, prophecy, myths_fables, eyewitnesses, carried_along_by_spirit, men_spoke, private_interpretation
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Peter grounds apostolic testimony in verified eyewitness history and Spirit-carried prophetic writing, not cunningly devised myths (never पुराण-rooted language) and not a Hindu śruti or Buddhist sūtra framework of sacred origination. The inspiration verb φερόμενοι must also be sharply distinguished from jhākri shamanic trance/possession phenomena still practiced in Nepal, in which the human agent’s consciousness is displaced — biblical inspiration preserves full authorial mind and voice.
Sonship of Christ
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टको पुत्रत्व
Key terms: son_of_god, voice_from_heaven, well_pleased
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: the Father’s own voice declares Christ’s unique, eternal Sonship at the Transfiguration. Must not be softened into metaphorical, adoptive, or honorary sonship, and must not be read through the lens of the Himalayan Buddhist tulku tradition of recognized reincarnate lineage-holders present among Nepal’s Himalayan communities.
Deity of Christ
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टको ईश्वरत्व
Key terms: savior, glory, majesty, son_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: 2 Peter 1:1’s single-article Greek construction (“our God and Savior Jesus Christ”) grammatically identifies Jesus as fully God. Translation must not insert punctuation separating God and Savior into two referents, and majesty language (μεγαλειότης) must avoid प्रताप, the term historically applied to the divine-royal majesty of Nepal’s Shah-dynasty kings, venerated as living avatars of Vishnu until 2008.
Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption
Nepali name: ईश्वरीय स्वभावको सहभागिता र भ्रष्टताबाट उद्धार
Key terms: partakers_of_divine_nature, divine_power, corruption, evil_desire
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: “partakers of the divine nature” is the single most theologically dangerous phrase in the epistle for Nepal, directly colliding with Advaita Vedānta’s Ātman-Brahman identity doctrine, Buddhist tathāgatagarbha/Buddha-nature teaching, and bhakti traditions of becoming “one with” a chosen deity. Must render with स्वभाव (character/nature) never तत्व (metaphysical essence), and require a mandatory teaching note affirming moral/relational participation in God’s holy character through Christ, never ontological merger or absorption into deity. Corruption (φθορά) must use विनाश, not क्षय, to avoid the Buddhist anicca/impermanence frame.
Judgment of Fallen Angels
Nepali name: पाप गर्ने स्वर्गदूतहरूको न्याय
Key terms: tartarus_cast_down, angels_who_sinned
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: ταρταρόω must never be rendered as bare नरक, since Hindu and Buddhist cosmology commonly treat naraka as a temporary purgatorial realm within an ongoing rebirth cycle from which souls eventually depart — directly contradicting the finality of this imprisonment awaiting judgment. A descriptive rendering (chains of darkness / a bound prison) is required, or नरक must carry a mandatory distinguishing note.
The Certainty of Christ’s Return
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टको आगमनको निश्चयता
Key terms: parousia, scoffers, eyewitnesses
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: παρουσία (आगमन) is the doctrinal backbone of the epistle’s eschatology, guaranteed by the Transfiguration and disputed by scoffers. Must never be shaded toward अवतार-language describing a repeatable royal or divine descent — the doctrine attached to Nepal’s Shah-dynasty monarchy within living memory (abolished 2008) — since Peter describes a singular, certain, future, visible, personal return of the same historical Christ.
The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment
Nepali name: प्रभुको दिन र अन्तिम न्याय
Key terms: day_of_the_lord, day_of_judgment_and_destruction, elements, new_heavens_new_earth, righteousness_dwells, flood, creation
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: the Day of the Lord is a single, final, linear act of cosmic judgment and renewal (paralleling the historical Flood), which must be sharply distinguished from Hindu cosmology’s cyclical cosmic dissolution and recreation (pralaya, recurring across kalpas/yugas) and from Buddhist kalpa-cycle cosmology. στοιχεῖα (तत्वहरू) must be kept strictly physical, avoiding the Vedāntic tattva metaphysical system; this is a mandatory teaching note wherever 3:7-13 is taught.
Salvation
Nepali name: उद्धार
Key terms: salvation, repentance, gods_patience
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, DUAL-FRONT per baseline: never मुक्ति/मोक्ष (Hindu liberation from rebirth) and never निर्वाण (Buddhist cessation of craving and self). 2 Peter 3:15 frames God’s patience itself as salvation-oriented — deliverance by a personal God who desires repentance, not release from an impersonal cycle.
High Risk Doctrines
Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony
Nepali name: प्रेरितहरूको प्रत्यक्षदर्शी गवाही
Key terms: eyewitnesses, myths_fables, voice_from_heaven, holy_mountain
Review routing: Human theologian
The Transfiguration is presented as verifiable, historical, sensory testimony (sight and hearing), not a private mystical vision or a devotee’s meditative experience of divine radiance — a needed distinction given the currency of visionary/darshan experience in Nepali devotional practice.
Growing in Christian Virtue
Nepali name: मसीही सद्गुणमा वृद्धि
Key terms: virtue_excellence, knowledge_full, knowledge, self_control, endurance, godliness, brotherly_love, love, diligence
Review routing: Human theologian
The virtue chain risks two distinct syncretism collisions at once: ἀρετή/γνῶσις terms (सद्गुण, ज्ञान) must avoid the Sāṅkhya triguna and jñāna-mārga/prajñā frameworks, and εὐσέβεια (ईश्वरभक्ति) must avoid implying a meritorious bhakti path among several paths to liberation. All virtue is a grace-response, not merit accumulation, consistent with the baseline’s grace-vs-karma caution.
Divine Calling and Election
Nepali name: परमेश्वरको बोलावट र छनोट
Key terms: calling_and_election
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s sovereign call and choice, confirmed by a life of growing virtue, must be distinguished from karma-determined destiny shared by both Nepali Hindu and Buddhist frameworks, consistent with the baseline’s existing effectual_calling entry.
False Teachers and Their Judgment
Nepali name: झूटा शिक्षकहरू र तिनीहरूको न्याय
Key terms: false_teachers, destructive_heresies, master_owner, bought_purchased, ungodliness
Review routing: Human theologian
Given Nepal’s 2017 Muluki Criminal Code provisions restricting religious conversion/proselytizing, teaching on false teachers must be framed strictly as internal doctrinal discernment within the Christian community, not language readable as inciting conflict with adherents of other religious traditions. αἵρεσις ἀπωλείας must avoid पाखण्ड, a term loaded with historic Hindu inter-school polemic.
Patience of God’s Timing
Nepali name: परमेश्वरको समयको धीरज
Key terms: lord_not_slow, gods_patience, one_day_as_thousand_years, repentance
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s delay in judgment is personal, purposeful forbearance aimed at repentance, not an impersonal cosmic schedule, fatalistic भाग्य, or the law of karma shared by Hindu and Buddhist frameworks. μακροθυμία must always be paired with परमेश्वरको/प्रभुको to distinguish it from human ὑπομονή (chapter 1).
New Heavens and New Earth
Nepali name: नयाँ आकाश र नयाँ पृथ्वी
Key terms: new_heavens_new_earth, righteousness_dwells, without_spot_blameless
Review routing: Human theologian
The promised final renewal of creation is a single, linear, one-time re-creation after judgment, not an endless creation-dissolution-recreation cycle as in Hindu pralaya cosmology. धार्मिकता must be reused exactly (never धर्म) as the moral order of this renewed creation.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Right Handling of Scripture
Nepali name: पवित्रशास्त्रको सही व्याख्या
Key terms: hard_to_understand, unstable, private_interpretation
Review routing: Native speaker review
The warning against twisting difficult Scripture to one’s own destruction concerns doctrinal distortion by the unstable, not a general caution against personal Bible reading — relevant for a young, recently literate Nepali church encouraged toward direct engagement with Scripture.
Growth in Grace and Knowledge
Nepali name: अनुग्रह र ज्ञानमा वृद्धि
Key terms: grace, knowledge, growth
Review routing: Native speaker review
The epistle’s closing exhortation pairs अनुग्रह (already Critical-guarded against पुण्य/भाग्य in the baseline) with ज्ञान (Critical-guarded against jñāna-mārga/prajñā above); the growth verb itself carries no independent collision risk, but the passage requires both established glosses to be present together.
Redemption and Christ’s Ownership
Nepali name: उद्धार र ख्रीष्टको स्वामित्व
Key terms: master_owner, bought_purchased
Review routing: Native speaker review
δεσπότης (मालिक) emphasizes Christ’s ownership-right by purchase over believers, a mundane and low-collision Nepali word, but the doctrinal point — denying this ownership is a particularly grave sin — must be preserved distinctly from general Lordship (प्रभु/κύριος) language.
Low Risk Doctrines
Creation and God’s Sovereignty over History
Nepali name: सृष्टि र इतिहासमा परमेश्वरको सार्वभौमिकता
Key terms: creation, flood, one_day_as_thousand_years
Review routing: Automated review
Standard vocabulary (सृष्टि, जलप्रलय) with minor risk of प्रलय’s cyclical Hindu cosmological association; addressed as a flag for awareness rather than a Critical collision since context clearly indicates a single historical event.
