Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — Colossians (Koine Greek → Nepali)

Scope and Method

This analysis covers the entire book of Colossians, all four chapters, in the original Koine Greek (Nestle-Aland text-form). The core passage, Colossians 1:15–20, receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every remaining chapter is analyzed for load-bearing theological vocabulary using the same seven fields: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, and destination-language (Nepali) rendering risk.

Any term already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json is reused exactly and marked “(baseline — reused).” New terms proposed here are marked “(new — Colossians)” and carry provisional risk tiers for confirmation in later Phase 1 steps (doctrine risk registry extension, core glossary).

Nepali cultural/religious collision points referenced throughout follow the same evidentiary standard set by the baseline: specific, documented features of Nepali religious and legal history (Hindu Kingdom status until 2007, the Muluki Ain caste code in force until 1963, Shah-dynasty avatar kingship until 2008, Newar Tantric practice and the Kumari cult, Himalayan Buddhist rebirth/tulku tradition, sadhu asceticism at Pashupatinath, the 2017 Muluki Criminal Code’s restriction on religious conversion, and the Kamaiya (abolished 2002) and Haliya (abolished 2008) bonded-labor systems).

PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: Colossians 1:15–20 (Verse-by-Verse)

This passage is the Christ-hymn at the theological center of the letter, directly supplying four of the eight curriculum doctrines: the Supremacy of Christ over Creation, Christ as Head of the Church, Reconciliation through the Cross, and (by anticipation of 2:9) the Fullness of Deity in Christ.

Verse 15 — ὅς ἐστιν εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἀοράτου, πρωτότοκος πάσης κτίσεως

εἰκών (eikōn)

  • Literal meaning: image, likeness, visible representation of an underlying reality.
  • Semantic range: a copy/portrait; a coin’s stamped image (cf. Rom 13’s “image” on a coin); in Hellenistic philosophy, the visible manifestation of an invisible archetype.
  • English variants: “image,” “likeness,” “exact representation.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is the perfect, personal, visible disclosure of the invisible God — not a symbolic or partial representation, but the very form of God’s being made manifest.
  • Nepali rendering risk: Critical. The natural Nepali word for “image/statue” is प्रतिमा (murti-adjacent), the standard term for the carved and consecrated images at Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath, and household shrines throughout Nepal. Rendering εἰκών as प्रतिमा risks readers hearing “Christ is an idol-image of God,” inverting Paul’s point. Recommend स्वरूप (form/very likeness) rather than प्रतिमा; प्रतिमा must be explicitly rejected.

θεοῦ τοῦ ἀοράτου (theou tou aoratou)

  • Literal meaning: “of the invisible God.”
  • Semantic range: ἀόρατος = unseen, unable to be perceived by physical sight.
  • Contextual theological meaning: affirms God’s transcendence; Christ alone makes the unseen God knowable.
  • Nepali rendering: अदृश्य परमेश्वर. परमेश्वर is baseline-reused (Critical; never भगवान). Risk: Critical (inherits परमेश्वर’s baseline critical status).

πρωτότοκος (prōtotokos)

  • Literal meaning: firstborn.
  • Semantic range: (1) literal birth order; (2) rank, preeminence, and inheritance-right of the firstborn son in ancient Near Eastern/Jewish custom, regardless of birth order (cf. Ps 89:27, where David is called God’s “firstborn” though not literally first-born).
  • English variants: “firstborn,” “preeminent one,” “firstborn heir.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: sovereign rank and inheritance-right over all creation, NOT a statement that Christ is the first created being.
  • Nepali rendering risk: Critical. A literal-birth-order reading (सृष्टिमा सबैभन्दा पहिले जन्मेको = “born first among creation”) would teach that Christ is a created being — the exact reading advanced by movements common in Nepal’s religious marketplace that treat Christ as one exalted being among many. Recommend rendering with an explicit rank-sense: सृष्टिभन्दा माथि जेठो हक पाउने (“holding the firstborn’s rank/right over creation”) or minimally जेठो पुत्र with a mandatory translator’s note clarifying rank, not origin-in-time. Must never be paired with any wording implying Christ came into being at a point within creation.

  • Literal meaning: was created/has been created.
  • Semantic range: to bring into existence from nothing; to found, establish.
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is the agent (“in him”), means (“through him”), and goal (“for him”) of all creation — placing him on the Creator side of the Creator/creature line, the direct answer to v.15’s “firstborn” ambiguity.
  • Nepali rendering: सृष्टि गरियो / सृजना गरियो. Risk: High — the verb itself is safe, but it must be tightly bound grammatically to “in him / through him / for him” so the passage cannot be misread as Christ being merely an instrument used by a higher, more ultimate God (a subordinationist reading with surface resemblance to avatar/emanation frameworks).

θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι (thronoi, kyriotētes, archai, exousiai)

  • Literal meaning: thrones, lordships/dominions, rulers/first-principles, authorities.
  • Semantic range: a stock four-part enumeration of ranked angelic/spiritual powers in Second Temple Jewish thought — not abstractions but personal spiritual beings understood to govern nations, elements, or spheres.
  • English variants: “thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities” / “powers and authorities.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: every rank of spiritual power, however exalted, is itself created by and subordinate to Christ.
  • Nepali rendering risk: Critical. Nepal’s religious landscape includes an active, living framework of ranked spiritual beings — local देवता (village/regional deities), भूत-प्रेत (spirits), नागहरू (serpent-deities believed to control land and water), and the Newar Tantric pantheon centered in the Kathmandu Valley — which are propitiated, feared, or petitioned much as these “thrones and dominions” were in the Colossian setting. If mistranslated so as to affirm these beings’ independent power rather than their subordination, the verse can be read as validating rather than dismantling the very spirit-hierarchy it exists to relativize. Recommend सिंहासनहरू, प्रभुत्वहरू, अधिपतिहरू/शासकहरू, अधिकारहरू — avoiding शक्ति entirely per baseline’s power_of_god ruling — with a doctrinal note affirming these are real created powers wholly subordinate to Christ, not now to be feared, appeased, or worshipped.

τὰ πάντα (ta panta)

  • Literal meaning: “all things,” repeated four times in vv.16–20 as the passage’s structural spine.
  • Contextual theological meaning: totalizing, comprehensive scope — nothing in the created or spiritual order stands outside Christ’s originating, sustaining, and reconciling work.
  • Nepali rendering: सबै थोक / सारा सृष्टि. Risk: Medium — mistranslation risk is more about consistency (same phrase, same rendering, across all four occurrences) than doctrinal collision.

Verse 17 — καὶ αὐτός ἐστιν πρὸ πάντων καὶ τὰ πάντα ἐν αὐτῷ συνέστηκεν

πρὸ πάντων (pro pantōn)

  • Literal meaning: before all things.
  • Semantic range: temporal priority (“before” in time) and/or ontological priority (“above/superior to”).
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ’s eternal pre-existence, prior to and independent of creation.
  • Nepali rendering: सबैभन्दा अगाडि / सबैभन्दा पहिले. Risk: High — must be read together with v.15–16 so “पहिले” (first/before) is not flattened into the same birth-order misreading already flagged for πρωτότοκος.

συνέστηκεν (synestēken, from συνίστημι)

  • Literal meaning: holds together, coheres, is sustained/consists.
  • Semantic range: to bring/hold together into a coherent, stable whole; to sustain in ongoing existence (not merely to have originated something once).
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is not only Creation’s origin but its continuous sustaining cause — the ground of coherence for the entire universe, moment by moment.
  • Nepali rendering risk: Critical. This claim functionally displaces impersonal cosmic-order concepts familiar to a Nepali audience — the Hindu notion of ऋत/धर्म as the impersonal principle holding the cosmos in order, and the Buddhist teaching of impersonal causal law (प्रतीत्यसमुत्पाद, dependent origination) sustaining phenomena without any personal sustaining agent. Recommend a dynamic verb phrase such as अडिरहेको छ / टिकिरहेको छ (“is held/standing together”), with explicit doctrinal framing: a personal Christ sustains the universe, not an impersonal law or principle.

Verse 18 — καὶ αὐτός ἐστιν ἡ κεφαλὴ τοῦ σώματος, τῆς ἐκκλησίας· ὅς ἐστιν ἀρχή, πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν, ἵνα γένηται ἐν πᾶσιν αὐτὸς πρωτεύων

κεφαλή (kephalē)

  • Literal meaning: head (of a body).
  • Semantic range: the physical head; metaphorically, source, authority, and organic life-source of a body.
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is not merely the church’s leader by appointment but its organic source of life and unifying authority — directly supplying the “Christ as Head of the Church” doctrine.
  • Nepali rendering: शिर / टाउको (metaphorical sense: शिर). Risk: Medium — natural Nepali metaphor works well (शिर is used idiomatically for leadership), but must be distinguished from merely administrative “chairman/leader” language that would lose the organic, life-giving sense.

σῶμα…τῆς ἐκκλησίας (sōma…tēs ekklēsias)

  • Literal meaning: body…of the church.
  • Contextual theological meaning: the church as a single living organism, not a voluntary association or institution.
  • Nepali rendering: शरीर/देह (body) + मण्डली (baseline-reused, Medium risk for “church”). Risk: Medium.

ἀρχή (archē)

  • Literal meaning: beginning, origin, first cause.
  • Semantic range: chronological beginning; source/originating principle; ruling office (cf. same root in ἀρχαί, v.16 — deliberate wordplay: Christ is the ἀρχή over the ἀρχαί).
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ as the originating source specifically of the new-creation order inaugurated in the resurrection.
  • Nepali rendering: सुरुवात / मूल स्रोत. Risk: Medium.

πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν (prōtotokos ek tōn nekrōn)

  • Literal meaning: firstborn from/out of the dead.
  • Semantic range: same rank/preeminence sense as v.15, now specifically as the first to rise to permanent, undying life, guaranteeing and pioneering the resurrection of all who are united to him.
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ’s resurrection is unique, historical, bodily, and once-for-all — the guarantee-pattern for believers’ future resurrection.
  • Nepali rendering risk: Critical. Must use baseline-reused पुनरुत्थान (never पुनर्जन्म) for “the dead/resurrection” concept. The compound “firstborn from the dead” additionally risks a rebirth-cycle reading if rendered loosely, given both Hindu पुनर्जन्म and the Himalayan Buddhist tulku (recognized-reincarnation) tradition, in which a revered figure’s identity is understood to recur in a newly born successor. Colossians teaches the opposite: one man, raised once, never to die again, as the forerunner of a final resurrection — not a recurring cycle of return. Recommend मृतकहरूबाट (सबैभन्दा) जेठो/प्रथम उठाइनुभएका, with the same rank-not-order clarification as v.15.

πρωτεύων (prōteuōn)

  • Literal meaning: being first/preeminent.
  • Contextual theological meaning: the purpose-clause goal of the whole hymn — that Christ have supremacy “in everything.”
  • Nepali rendering: सर्वोच्च हुनु / सबैमा प्रधान हुनु. Risk: High — this word must not be softened to “important” or “respected”; it is asserting absolute, comprehensive supremacy.

Verse 19 — ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ εὐδόκησεν πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα κατοικῆσαι

εὐδόκησεν (eudokēsen)

  • Literal meaning: was pleased, willed with pleasure/good pleasure.
  • Contextual theological meaning: God’s sovereign, glad decision (the subject is best understood as God the Father) that the fullness dwell in Christ — not an accident or a necessity imposed on God.
  • Nepali rendering: (परमेश्वर) खुसी भएर इच्छा गर्नुभयो. Risk: Medium.

πλήρωμα (plērōma)

  • Literal meaning: fullness, that which fills/completes.
  • Semantic range: the full content, sum, or completeness of something; in later Gnostic usage (the very error Colossians confronts, cf. 2:9), the sum-total of divine emanations filling the space between an unknowable high God and the material world.
  • English variants: “fullness,” “totality,” “completeness.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: the entire fullness of deity — not a fragment, ray, or partial emanation of God — permanently and personally dwells in Christ. This directly supplies the curriculum’s “Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily” doctrine (developed further at 2:9).
  • Nepali rendering risk: Critical. This is the single most theologically loaded noun in the letter, precisely because first-century false teachers at Colossae used πλήρωμα language to portion divinity out across many intermediary powers — a near-structural parallel to the way some Nepali religious frameworks distribute divine presence across many devatas, avatars, and spirit-mediators rather than locating it wholly in one person. Recommend पूर्णता, with mandatory doctrinal framing insisting on total, undivided, exclusive indwelling in Christ alone — the opposite of a distributed-fullness or emanationist reading.

κατοικῆσαι (katoikēsai)

  • Literal meaning: to dwell, to settle down and live permanently (contrast with a temporary, tent-like sojourning verb).
  • Contextual theological meaning: permanent, settled residence — not a temporary visitation, possession, or passing manifestation.
  • Nepali rendering: बास गर्नु / वास गर्नु (permanent dwelling). Risk: High — must be distinguished from language used for a deity temporarily “descending” into or “possessing” a person or object, a live category in Nepali shamanic (jhākri) and oracular practice (e.g., the living-goddess Kumari, understood as temporarily indwelt by the goddess). Colossians teaches permanent ontological union, not episodic possession.

Verse 20 — καὶ δι᾽ αὐτοῦ ἀποκαταλλάξαι τὰ πάντα εἰς αὐτόν, εἰρηνοποιήσας διὰ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ σταυροῦ αὐτοῦ, εἴτε τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς εἴτε τὰ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς

ἀποκαταλλάξαι (apokatallaxai, from ἀποκαταλλάσσω)

  • Literal meaning: to reconcile fully/completely (the ἀπο- and κατα- prefixes intensify the base verb “to change/exchange,” here of hostile relationship into peaceful relationship).
  • Semantic range: to restore to a right relationship after estrangement or hostility; comprehensive, cosmic-in-scope reconciliation (“all things…whether on earth or in heaven”).
  • English variants: “reconcile,” “restore to favor,” “make peace between.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: the direct textual basis for the curriculum’s “Reconciliation through the Cross” doctrine — a comprehensive restoration of right relationship between God and all creation (including, by implication, the very powers of v.16), accomplished at the cross.
  • Nepali rendering risk: Critical. Nepali folk religious practice includes ritual means of “making peace” with offended ancestors or displeased spirits/deities — shraddha rites for ancestors, puja offerings to appease an angry devata, animal sacrifice at Dakshinkali and similar shrines to satisfy a deity’s wrath. If ἀποκαταλλάσσω is rendered with vocabulary evoking ritual appeasement of an offended power by a human offering, the verse is inverted: here God himself, in Christ, is the one who acts to reconcile, at his own cost, on the basis of the cross alone. Recommend मिलाप गराउनु/मेलमिलाप गराउनु, with explicit doctrinal framing: God is the reconciling agent, the cross (not a subsequent human ritual) is the sole reconciling event, and the recipients (τὰ πάντα, all things) are reconciled to God, not the reverse.

εἰρηνοποιήσας (eirēnopoiēsas, from εἰρηνοποιέω)

  • Literal meaning: having made peace.
  • Contextual theological meaning: peace achieved specifically through the cross’s blood, not through negotiation, ritual, or human effort. Compound with baseline-reused शान्ति (peace, Medium risk in Romans; here elevated by its direct dependence on the cross).
  • Nepali rendering: शान्ति बनाउनुभएर / शान्ति स्थापित गर्नुभएर. Risk: High in this context specifically, because it must be tied grammatically and inseparably to “through the blood of his cross,” not left as a free-standing statement about peace in general.

τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ σταυροῦ αὐτοῦ (tou haimatos tou staurou autou)

  • Literal meaning: the blood of his cross.
  • Contextual theological meaning: the atoning, once-for-all sacrificial death of Christ as the specific means of cosmic reconciliation.
  • Nepali rendering: उहाँको क्रूसको रगत. Risk: High — sacrificial-blood language must be handled so as not to collapse into the logic of Hindu animal-sacrifice traditions (e.g., Dakshinkali) as one sacrificial transaction among others satisfying a deity, but rather as the unique, final, sufficient sacrifice ending the need for any further offering.

Must be anchored explicitly to “of his will” / “of God,” never left as an unqualified philosophical or meditative attainment.
σοφία, σύνεσις (1:9)sophia, synesiswisdom, understandingpractical, Spirit-given insight for livingwisdom, understandingspiritual wisdom for a life “worthy of the Lord”बुद्धि, समझHigh — बुद्धि shares its root with “Buddha” (the Awakened/Wise One) and Buddhist wisdom (प्रज्ञा) tradition prominent among Nepal’s Newar and Himalayan Buddhist communities; must be clearly bound to God-given, Christ-centered wisdom, not self-attained enlightened insight.

Biblical μυστήριον is the opposite: a plan once hidden but NOW made fully known and proclaimed openly to everyone, Jew and Gentile alike — not an ongoing secret reserved for the initiated.

Chapter 2

Chapter 2 carries the letter’s central polemic against false teaching and syncretism, and states the “Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily” doctrine explicitly (2:9). Heavy new vocabulary.

Paul is not condemning reasoned thought generally but a specific system that “takes captive” through empty deceit and displaces Christ; the translation and any teaching note must make this precise scope explicit, lest the verse be heard as anti-intellectualism or a blanket dismissal of Nepali philosophical heritage.

Must be rendered and taught so as to affirm these are, at most, defeated created powers, never entities to be feared, consulted, or appeased.

περιτομή (2:11)peritomēcircumcisionthe Jewish covenant rite of Genesis 17; here, spiritually, union with Christ’s deathcircumcision (literal and “of Christ”)believers have undergone a “circumcision made without hands” in union with Christखतना (new — Colossians; established loanword)High — the metaphor requires explanation, since circumcision is not a broadly practiced rite in Nepali culture outside the Muslim minority; risk is primarily one of intelligibility, but doctrinally High because the underlying point (right standing before God does not depend on any external physical rite) directly reinforces the baseline’s Critical concern that धार्मिकता never be tied to a performed ritual or caste-linked practice.
συνθάπτω, συνεγείρω (2:12)synthaptō, synegeirōburied together with, raised together withunion with Christ in both his death and his resurrection, pictured in baptismburied with him, raised with himbelievers’ identity is bound up with Christ’s death and resurrection, not a separate spiritual achievementख्रीष्टसँगै गाडिएका, ख्रीष्टसँगै उठाइएका (उठाइएका from पुनरुत्थान root — baseline reused)Critical — must never be rendered with पुनर्जन्म-adjacent vocabulary; this is a one-time positional union with Christ’s own unique resurrection, not a personal cycle of death-and-rebirth.

θριαμβεύω (2:15)thriambeuōto lead in triumphal processionthe specific Roman military ritual of a victorious general parading defeated enemies publiclytriumphed over, made a public spectacle ofChrist’s public, decisive victory over the powers, displayed openly at the crossसार्वजनिक रूपमा जिताउनु/विजय देखाउनुMedium — the Roman triumph is a foreign cultural image requiring a brief explanatory note for a Nepali audience unfamiliar with the custom.

Recommend reserving आराधना for legitimate worship of God/Christ throughout the curriculum, and पूजा specifically for the ritual veneration of any other being that Scripture condemns — making the Colossians warning terminologically visible rather than blurred.

Nepal abolished its own systems of hereditary bonded labor only very recently and within living memory — the Kamaiya system (2002) and the Haliya system (2008) — and caste-based servitude was itself formally codified in national law (the Muluki Ain) until 1963. A flattened or decontextualized translation risks being read either as divine endorsement of bonded servitude as an institution, or — if handled defensively — as evasive omission of a genuine biblical text. Required framing: Paul addresses conduct WITHIN an existing first-century social structure he did not invent, redirecting ultimate accountability from the human master to Christ (3:24, “you are serving the Lord Christ”), explicitly promises impartial judgment regardless of social rank (3:25), and in the parallel household instruction to masters (4:1) commands masters to treat their δοῦλοι with δίκαιον and ἰσότητα — justice and equality — a genuinely subversive claim in any status-stratified society. Human theologian review mandatory for this entire unit (3:22–4:1).

Summary Observations for Phase 2 Planning

  1. Highest-density risk chapter: Chapter 2, which contains the letter’s polemical core (φιλοσοφία, στοιχεῖα, θεότης, σωματικῶς, θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων, ἐθελοθρησκία, ἀφειδία σώματος) — nearly every term in this chapter collides directly with a specific, still-practiced feature of Nepali religious life (Tantric ritual, spirit/elemental appeasement, angel/deity veneration, ascetic self-denial). This chapter requires the heaviest theologian-review load in Phase 2.
  2. Highest social-sensitivity chapter: Chapter 3 (household codes, 3:18–4:1), given Nepal’s own recent (2002/2008) abolition of bonded-labor systems and 1963 abolition of the caste-coded Muluki Ain. Requires mandatory human theologian review for the entire 3:18–4:1 unit, not just Critical-tier individual terms.
  3. Direct baseline reuse is extensive: गspel, grace, faith, saints, holy, church, sin, gentiles, glory, lord, Jesus, God, Holy Spirit, Father, apostle, thanksgiving, power of God (सामर्थ्य, never शक्ति), calling, peace, and resurrection (पुनरुत्थान, never पुनर्जन्म) all recur through Colossians and must be enforced exactly per the Romans translation memory.
  4. New Critical-tier terms requiring Phase 1 Step 2+ doctrine-registry entries: image (स्वरूप), firstborn (rank-sense), fullness (पूर्णता), deity/Godhead (ईश्वरत्व), bodily (शारीरिक रूपमा), reconciliation (मिलाप), redemption (छुटकारा), mystery (रहस्य), elemental spirits (आदितत्वहरू), certificate of debt (ऋणपत्र), worship of angels (स्वर्गदूतको पूजा), self-made religion (स्वनिर्मित धर्म-पालना), severity to the body (शरीरलाई कष्ट दिने अभ्यास), old self/new self (पुरानो/नयाँ स्वभाव), idolatry (मूर्तिपूजा), and the masters/slaves household-code unit.
