Cross-Reference Analysis

Cross-Reference Analysis — Hebrews (Full Book) — English → Nepali

Scope and Method

This document catalogs every Old Testament quotation and allusion in Hebrews 1–13, every messianic reference, the letter’s typological structures, and its parallels to the baseline Romans curriculum already translated for Nepali. Citations follow normalizable “Book Chapter:Verse” style (e.g., “Genesis 15:6”, “Habakkuk 2:4”) so that Phase 2 tooling can machine-match references across curricula.

Hebrews quotes the Old Testament (chiefly the Greek Septuagint) more densely, verse-for-verse, than almost any other New Testament book, and Hebrews 11 in particular functions as a sustained narrative retelling of Genesis through the historical books. Every chapter is covered below in canonical order. Terms already assigned a Nepali rendering and risk tier in 07_semantic_analysis.md / 08_core_glossary.md are reused exactly; this document does not re-derive them, only tracks where the OT source text drives the doctrinal weight already assigned.

Hebrews 1:5aSonship/Deity of ChristChrist; David (typological voice)Psalm 2:7 (also quoted Hebrews 5:5; Acts 13:33)“Today I have begotten you” (जन्माएको) must be rendered as declarative enthronement language, not ontological origin — reinforces the जेठा (firstborn) caution already flagged; never imply Christ came into being at this moment. Critical, per baseline Sonship-of-Christ doctrine.
Hebrews 1:5bSonship as covenant promiseChrist; Solomon (typological), David2 Samuel 7:14Reinforces baseline “Davidic Covenant” doctrine (दाऊदी करार, High), directly paired with Romans 1:3’s “seed of David.”
Hebrews 1:6Christ’s deity; worship due only to GodChrist; angelsDeuteronomy 32:43 (LXX) / Psalm 97:7Central “Superiority over Angels” text; स्वर्गदूत (High) shown worshipping Christ directly confronts any devata-pantheon misreading.

Hebrews 1:8-9Deity of Christ; eternal royal throneChristPsalm 45:6-7”Your throne, O God” applies परमेश्वर (Critical) directly to the Son; must not soften to a lesser honorific; avoid any avatar-adjacent royal-throne resonance (see अनुग्रहको सिंहासन caution in glossary).
Hebrews 1:10-12Christ as Creator; eternalityChristPsalm 102:25-27Applies Yahweh-creation language directly to the Son — a foundational deity-of-Christ proof text.

Mark 12:36; Acts 2:34-35; Romans 8:34)“Sit at my right hand” (दाहिने हातपट्टि बस्नु) must be rendered identically at every Hebrews occurrence AND cross-checked against Romans 8:34’s rendering for full-canon consistency.

Hebrews PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Hebrews 2:6-8Christ’s humanity and dominionChrist (“son of man,” typologically); humanityPsalm 8:4-6”Son of man” applied first to humanity, then climactically to Christ; supports “Humanity of Christ” doctrine — guard against reading मानिस-language as a merely exalted human teacher.
Hebrews 2:9Christ’s temporary humiliation, then glorificationChrist(continuation of Psalm 8 application)“Lower than the angels” must not read as ontological subordination, only the incarnation’s temporary humiliation; connects to देहधारण (Critical).
Hebrews 2:12Christ’s solidarity with believersChrist; the redeemed communityPsalm 22:22 (foundational also to the Passion narratives, e.g., Matthew 27:46)Christ’s own voice praising God “in the assembly” (ekklēsia, मण्डली) links fellowship doctrine (baseline Low सहभागिता) to Christ’s own worship.
Hebrews 2:13Christ’s trust in the FatherChrist; Isaiah (as voice)Isaiah 8:17-18विश्वास (Critical) applied to Christ’s own human trust in the Father — theologian review required so this is not misread as uncertainty about his deity.

Parallels to the Romans Curriculum (Nepali Language Package)

Because Romans is the baseline curriculum already translated into Nepali, several Hebrews passages either quote the same Old Testament text Romans quotes, or develop the same doctrine using different vocabulary. Both cases require deliberate rendering-consistency management in Phase 2.

Rule Set 1 — Verbatim Shared Old Testament Quotations (Mandatory Identical Rendering)

Shared OT TextQuoted in RomansQuoted in HebrewsRendering-Consistency Rule
Habakkuk 2:4 (“the righteous shall live by faith”)Romans 1:17 (thesis statement of the whole curriculum, per the baseline’s own Theological Consistency Rules table)Hebrews 10:37-38The Nepali rendering of this quotation must be verbatim identical in both curricula. It combines two Critical baseline terms — धार्मिकता (righteousness) and विश्वास (faith) — and any divergence between the two curricula would create a visible, teachable inconsistency for a learner moving between Romans and Hebrews lessons. This is the single highest-priority cross-curriculum consistency item identified in this analysis.
Deuteronomy 32:35-36 (“Vengeance is mine; I will repay”)Romans 12:19Hebrews 10:30Mandatory identical rendering. Both contexts require this be read as a personal, righteous God’s own reserved prerogative to judge — not an impersonal law of karmic retribution (already forbidden for baseline’s “providence” entry).
Exodus 24:8 (“the blood of the covenant”)Not directly quoted in Romans, but the phrase is theologically load-bearing across the whole NT (cf. Matthew 26:28; Mark 14:24; Luke 22:20)Hebrews 9:20While not a Romans citation, करारको रगत must be checked against the Nepali Bible’s existing rendering of the Last Supper words so that a reader recognizes the same covenant-blood formula across Testaments.

Rule Set 2 — Shared Theological Vocabulary Requiring Cross-Curriculum Term Alignment

ConceptRomans LocusHebrews LocusConsistency Note
ἱλαστήριον / propitiation-placeRomans 3:25Hebrews 9:5Translation memory gap identified: the baseline Romans package flags “atonement/propitiation language (Romans 3:25)” for mandatory human-theologian escalation but does not record a fixed Nepali term for ἱλαστήριον in translation_memory.json. This Hebrews analysis establishes प्रायश्चित्तको स्थान (Critical) as the term of record. Recommendation: this Hebrews-derived rendering should also govern Romans 3:25 when that verse is finalized, closing the gap and ensuring the same underlying Greek word receives the same Nepali term in both books.
Psalm 110:1 (“at the right hand of God”)Romans 8:34Hebrews 1:13; 8:1; 10:12-13; 12:2Identical Nepali phrase required across every occurrence in both curricula.
Adoption / inheritance / AbbaRomans 8:15-17Hebrews 9:15; 12:5-11Reuse baseline दत्तक पुत्रता (High) exactly; Hebrews 12’s “discipline” material (अनुशासन) should be taught alongside Romans 8’s adoption material as two aspects of the same Father-child relationship, not separate doctrines.
Abraham’s faith as the OT paradigmRomans 4:1-25 (esp. 4:3 quoting Genesis 15:6; 4:18-21 on Abraham/Sarah)Hebrews 11:8-12,17-19Genesis 15:6 itself is not directly quoted in Hebrews, but the same narrative episodes (the promise of descendants, the binding of Isaac) are treated in both books as the definitive demonstration of justifying faith. Ensure विश्वास is applied with the same “trust despite natural impossibility, credited by God” sense across both treatments, even though Hebrews frames it under “assurance/evidence” (ὑπόστασις/ἔλεγχος, Hebrews 11:1) rather than Romans’ forensic “imputed righteousness” (आरोपित धार्मिकता).
The Law’s inability to save/perfectRomans 3:20; 7:7-13Hebrews 7:11,19; 10:1 (“the law made nothing perfect”)Reuse baseline व्यवस्था (High) exactly; both books agree the Mosaic law was good but never designed to accomplish final righteousness or perfection — a shared negative argument, not a contradiction between the two books.
Salvation (उद्धार)Romans, throughout (esp. 1:16; 10:1,10)Hebrews 1:14; 2:3,10; 5:9; 9:28; 11:7Absolute Critical-tier consistency required; never मुक्ति/मोक्ष/निर्वाण in either book.
Peace with God (शान्ति)Romans 5:1Hebrews 12:14Continuity of relational, covenantal sense; not meditative equanimity.
God’s providential governanceRomans 8:28-30Hebrews 6:17-18; 11 (implicit throughout)Reuse baseline परमेश्वरको व्यवस्थापन (High) exactly.
Obedience flowing from faith vs. Christ’s own learned obedienceRomans 1:5; 16:26 (विश्वासको आज्ञाकारिता — believer’s obedience of faith)Hebrews 5:8 (Christ’s own ὑπακοή through suffering)Related but distinct referents — the Romans compound term describes believers’ faith-obedience; Hebrews 5:8 describes Christ’s redemptive-historical obedience. Do not conflate; use आज्ञाकारिता alone (without the विश्वासको compound) at Hebrews 5:8 to keep the referents distinct.

Rule Set 3 — Doctrinal Complementarity Without Shared Citation

DoctrineRomans’ FrameHebrews’ FrameTranslation Implication
Universal accountability / no distinctionLegal-forensic: “all have sinned,” Romans 3:23Priestly-access: every worshiper equally barred from the Most Holy Place under the old system, equally welcomed at Zion under the new (Hebrews 9:1-10; 12:18-24)Both undermine caste-based spiritual hierarchy; Hebrews does so architecturally/ritually rather than forensically — teaching material should note the two books argue the same conclusion from different angles.
Christ’s bloodRomans 3:25; 5:9 (justification/reconciliation emphasis)Hebrews 9:12-14,18-22; 10:19; 12:24; 13:12,20 (access and cleansing-of-conscience emphasis)रगत (High) must be handled with the same anti-ritual-sacrifice caution in both books; Hebrews develops the access dimension more fully than Romans.
Israel and the covenantRomans 9-11 (Israel’s present unbelief and future restoration)Hebrews 8 (the New Covenant explicitly promised to Israel and Judah, Jeremiah 31:31)Both books affirm continuity with, not replacement of, God’s promises to Israel; करार (High) renderings must avoid implying Israel was simply discarded.

Summary Note on Full-Book Coverage

Every chapter of Hebrews (1–13) has been reviewed for Old Testament quotation, allusion, messianic typology, and Romans-curriculum parallel. Chapters with dense, extended quotation (3, 8, 10, 11, 12) receive proportionally fuller matrix treatment; chapters with fewer direct citations (2, 5, 6, 13) are represented by their load-bearing citations in full. No chapter is without at least one cataloged OT connection. This document, together with 08_core_glossary.md, must be loaded alongside translation_memory.json before Phase 2 segment translation of any Hebrews chapter, per the pre-flight procedure in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
