Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — 2 Thessalonians (Koine Greek)

Purpose and Method

This document analyzes every chapter of 2 Thessalonians (1–3) in the original Koine Greek. The core passage, 2 Thessalonians 2:1–12, receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing theological vocabulary using the same fields. Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked [BASELINE — reuse exactly] and are not renegotiated; only their contextual application in 2 Thessalonians is noted. New terms required for this curriculum are proposed with a risk tier and grounding rationale, for ratification in Step 2 (glossary) and eventual promotion into translation memory.

Risk tiers follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions (Critical / High / Medium / Low).

PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 2 Thessalonians 2:1–12

2 Thessalonians 2:1

Greek: Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, ὑπὲρ τῆς παρουσίας τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ ἡμῶν ἐπισυναγωγῆς ἐπ’ αὐτόν,

  • ἀδελφοί (adelphoi) — “brothers.” Literal: male siblings; semantic range extends to fellow believers regardless of sex. English variants: “brothers,” “brothers and sisters,” “brethren.” Contextual meaning: Paul’s pastoral, familial address to the whole congregation. Nepali: भाइहरू — Low risk; established Nepali Bible usage; no collision.
  • παρουσία (parousia) — literal “a being-beside, arrival, presence.” Semantic range: (1) a ruler’s or dignitary’s official state visit/arrival; (2) technical NT term for Christ’s future visible return. English variants: “coming,” “arrival,” “advent,” “presence.” Contextual theological meaning: the singular, personal, visible return of Christ to consummate history — the central term of the Day of the Lord doctrine. CRITICAL risk. Because Nepal’s Shah-dynasty kings were venerated as living avatars whose royal “appearances” carried divine sanction until 2008, and because Hindu cosmology anticipates a repeatable avatar-descent (the Kalki avatar appearing at the close of the current age), Nepali rendering must avoid any phrase resembling अवतार-descent language (already forbidden in baseline for “incarnation”). Recommend आगमन (“coming/arrival”) — a neutral, non-avatar term already usable for “coming” generally, paired consistently with प्रभु to yield प्रभुको आगमन (“the Lord’s coming”), never एक अवतार (“an avatar/descent”) of any kind. Must always convey a unique, final, unrepeatable coming, not one in a series of divine appearances.
  • ἐπισυναγωγή (episynagōgē) — literal “a gathering together upon/toward.” Semantic range: the assembling of believers to Christ, cognate with συναγωγή (“synagogue,” “gathering place”) but here strictly the event, not the building. English variants: “being gathered together,” “our gathering together to him,” “assembling.” Contextual meaning: the rapture-adjacent gathering of the church to Christ at his parousia, alongside which the Thessalonians must not be shaken. Nepali: proposed सँगै जम्मा हुने कार्य or shorter जमघट (“gathering, assembly”). Medium risk — must not be rendered with a term suggesting a Jewish synagogue building or a merely social meeting; it names a specific end-time event tied to the parousia, not routine मण्डली gatherings.

2 Thessalonians 2:2

Greek: εἰς τὸ μὴ ταχέως σαλευθῆναι ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ τοῦ νοὸς μηδὲ θροεῖσθαι, μήτε διὰ πνεύματος μήτε διὰ λόγου μήτε δι’ ἐπιστολῆς ὡς δι’ ἡμῶν, ὡς ὅτι ἐνέστηκεν ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου.

  • σαλεύω (saleuō) — literal “to shake, to cause to totter.” Semantic range: physical shaking (of a building, of the sea) or metaphorical destabilizing of the mind/conviction. English variants: “shaken,” “unsettled,” “disturbed.” Contextual meaning: Paul urges the mind not to be destabilized by false claims about the Day of the Lord’s timing. Nepali: डगमगाउनु / विचलित हुनु — Low-Medium risk; standard, no major collision, but should convey settled doctrinal conviction rather than mere emotional calm (avoid overlap with शान्ति/meditative equanimity language already flagged in baseline for “peace”).
  • θροέω (throeō) — literal “to be thrown into terror/agitation, to be alarmed.” Semantic range: sudden emotional alarm, often at ominous news. English variants: “alarmed,” “troubled,” “frightened.” Nepali: त्रसित हुनु / व्याकुल हुनु — Low risk.
  • πνεῦμα (pneuma) — here NOT the Holy Spirit but “a spirit [of prophecy/utterance],” i.e., a purported prophetic message. Semantic range spans “wind, breath, spirit (human), Spirit (divine), spiritual utterance.” High risk of confusion: because पवित्र आत्मा is reserved in baseline exclusively for the Holy Spirit, this occurrence — a claimed prophetic utterance, possibly false — must be rendered generically, e.g., आत्मिक भनाइ / भविष्यवाणीको दाबी, never पवित्र आत्मा itself, to avoid implying the Holy Spirit authored the false claim.
  • λόγος (logos) — here “a spoken word/message” (as distinct from a written letter). Nepali: वचन/भनाइ — Low risk, generic.
  • ἐπιστολή (epistolē) — “a letter.” Nepali: पत्र — Low risk.
  • ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου (hēmera tou kyriou) — “the Day of the Lord.” Literal: “day of the lord/master.” Semantic range: an OT prophetic technical term (Joel, Amos, Isaiah, Zephaniah) for God’s decisive, climactic intervention in judgment and salvation; in the NT applied to Christ’s return. English variants: “the Day of the Lord,” “that Day,” “the day of Christ.” Contextual theological meaning: this is the anchor phrase of the entire chapter — the eschatological day of final judgment and vindication that the man of lawlessness must precede. CRITICAL risk. Nepali: प्रभुको दिन. Must not be assimilated to Hindu yuga-cycle cosmology, in which cosmic ages end and restart cyclically (culminating, in Vaishnava tradition, with Kalki’s arrival to purge adharma at the close of Kali Yuga) — the biblical Day of the Lord is a single, linear, unrepeatable historical culmination, not one turn of a cosmic wheel. This distinction must be made explicit in teaching notes wherever this term is introduced.

2 Thessalonians 2:3

Greek: μή τις ὑμᾶς ἐξαπατήσῃ κατὰ μηδένα τρόπον· ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ ἔλθῃ ἡ ἀποστασία πρῶτον καὶ ἀποκαλυφθῇ ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας, ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας,

  • ἐξαπατάω (exapataō) — intensive form of “deceive,” literal “to deceive thoroughly/utterly.” Nepali: पूर्ण रूपले छक्याउनु / धोका दिनु — Low-Medium risk.
  • ἀποστασία (apostasia) — literal “a standing away from, defection.” Semantic range: political revolt or religious defection/abandonment of a previously held commitment. English variants: “the rebellion,” “the apostasy,” “the falling away.” Contextual meaning: a specific, singular, end-time defection from the faith that must occur before the man of lawlessness is revealed. CRITICAL risk. Recommend विश्वासबाट विद्रोह (“rebellion/revolt away from the faith”) — built on the approved विश्वास root, deliberately avoiding any धर्म-rooted coinage (e.g., धर्मत्याग) that would echo the state-legitimating religious-identity weight धर्म already carries in Nepal per the baseline righteousness/law entries. An alternate compound, विश्वासपतन (“faith-fall”), may also be considered; either is preferable to a धर्म-rooted term.
  • ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας (anthrōpos tēs anomias) — “the man of lawlessness.” See ἀνομία below. CRITICAL risk, central doctrinal term of the curriculum.
  • ἀνομία (anomia) — literal “without-law-ness” (ἀ- privative + νόμος, “law”). Semantic range: lawlessness, rejection of divine moral order, active rebellion against God’s law — not mere illegality but hostility to God’s authority. English variants: “lawlessness,” “iniquity,” “wickedness.” CRITICAL risk, the single most sensitive lexical decision in this curriculum. The natural Nepali calque would be अधर्म (built on धर्म, “the opposite of dharma”), but this must be explicitly and permanently rejected: अधर्म is the precise technical term in Hindu cosmology for the moral disorder that the god-king avatar Kalki descends to destroy at the end of the Kali Yuga. Rendering “the man of lawlessness” using अधर्म-based vocabulary would create a direct, dangerous syncretistic parallel — inviting readers to map this passage onto Kalki-avatar-defeats-adharma expectation, exactly inverting the text’s meaning (here it is Christ’s parousia, not a repeatable avatar, that destroys this figure — see v.8). Recommended rendering: अव्यवस्था (“disorder/lawlessness”), built on the already-approved व्यवस्था root (Mosaic Law, per baseline), consistently negated. “The man of lawlessness” → अव्यवस्थाको मानिस.
  • υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας (huios tēs apōleias) — “son of destruction/perdition,” a Hebraic idiom meaning “one destined for/characterized by destruction,” structurally parallel to “son of David” idioms elsewhere. English variants: “son of perdition,” “son of destruction,” “man doomed to destruction.” High risk: Nepali विनाशको पुत्र is literal and idiomatically recognizable, but translators must ensure readers do not construe पुत्र here as implying any parallel to परमेश्वरका पुत्र (the reserved, exclusive title for Christ’s unique Sonship). A footnote clarifying the Hebraic “son of X” = “one destined for/characterized by X” idiom is required at first occurrence.

2 Thessalonians 2:4

Greek: ὁ ἀντικείμενος καὶ ὑπεραιρόμενος ἐπὶ πάντα λεγόμενον θεὸν ἢ σέβασμα, ὥστε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν ναὸν τοῦ θεοῦ καθίσαι, ἀποδεικνύντα ἑαυτὸν ὅτι ἔστιν θεός.

  • ἀντικείμενος (antikeimenos) — present participle of ἀντίκειμαι, “to be set against, to oppose.” Semantic range: adversary, opponent, one who positions himself against another. English variants: “who opposes,” “the adversary.” Nepali: विरोधी — High risk; must be distinguished from a mere rival deity within a pantheon (this figure opposes the one true God, not competes among many gods).
  • ὑπεραίρομαι (hyperairomai) — literal “to raise oneself over/above.” Semantic range: to exalt oneself, to become arrogant/proud beyond one’s station. Nepali: आफूलाई उच्च पार्ने / घमण्डी हुने — Medium risk, standard pride vocabulary, low collision.
  • σέβασμα (sebasma) — “an object of worship/veneration,” from σέβομαι (“to worship, revere”). English variants: “object of worship,” “that which is worshiped.” Nepali: पूजाको वस्तु. Medium risk — here पूजा (a term normally associated with Hindu/Buddhist ritual veneration) is contextually appropriate precisely because σέβασμα names illegitimate, pagan-style objects of worship that this figure usurps; translators should not sanitize this into a neutral term, since the text’s point is that he displaces every rightful and every false object of worship alike.
  • ναός (naos) — literal “sanctuary, inner shrine” (distinct from ἱερόν, the wider temple precinct). Semantic range: the holy dwelling place of a deity; in NT usage also metaphorically the church/believer’s body as God’s dwelling. English variants: “temple,” “sanctuary.” Contextual meaning here: debated among interpreters — a future rebuilt Jerusalem temple, or a metaphorical claim to divine status within God’s own household. High risk. Nepali: मन्दिर — the standard word, distinct from मण्डली (church, reserved per baseline). Flag for careful handling: this figure “sits enthroned” claiming deity inside God’s own sanctuary — a scenario that resonates uncomfortably with Nepal’s own living memory of god-kings enthroned as Vishnu-avatars within temple/palace ritual space. Teaching materials must make unmistakably clear that the text condemns, rather than models, a “man enthroned as god within a sacred space” — the opposite of the venerated Shah-era royal-divine pattern.
  • καθίζω (kathizō) — “to sit, to seat oneself, to enthrone.” Nepali: बस्नु / आसन ग्रहण गर्नु — recommend the plain बस्नु over आसन ग्रहण गर्नु (Medium risk: आसन carries yogic/ritual-seat connotations that could add unwanted devotional coloring to an act the text presents as blasphemous usurpation).
  • ἀποδείκνυμι (apodeiknymi) — “to show forth, demonstrate, publicly proclaim.” Nepali: आफूलाई घोषणा गर्नु — Low-Medium risk.

2 Thessalonians 2:5

Greek: Οὐ μνημονεύετε ὅτι ἔτι ὢν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ταῦτα ἔλεγον ὑμῖν;

  • μνημονεύω (mnēmoneuō) — “to remember, call to mind.” Nepali: सम्झनु — Low risk, standard.
  • No new doctrinal terms; a rhetorical reminder verse anchoring the teaching in Paul’s prior in-person instruction.

2 Thessalonians 2:6

Greek: καὶ νῦν τὸ κατέχον οἴδατε, εἰς τὸ ἀποκαλυφθῆναι αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἑαυτοῦ καιρῷ.

  • τὸ κατέχον (to katechon) — neuter present participle of κατέχω, “to hold back, restrain, hold fast.” Semantic range: to restrain/suppress a force, or (middle/passive sense elsewhere) to hold firmly to something. English variants: “what is restraining,” “that which restrains.” Contextual meaning: an identifiable restraining force/power presently preventing the man of lawlessness’s revelation — famously one of the most exegetically disputed phrases in the NT (proposals include the Roman Empire, the preaching of the gospel, the Holy Spirit’s restraining presence, or angelic restraint). High risk, primarily an ambiguity-handling risk rather than a syncretism risk. Nepali: रोकिराखेको कुरा/शक्ति (neuter, “that which is restraining”). Translators must preserve the grammatical ambiguity (Greek shifts from neuter τὸ κατέχον here to masculine ὁ κατέχων in v.7 — “he who restrains”) rather than prematurely resolving the restrainer’s identity; flag for mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence, per escalation rules.
  • ἀποκαλύπτω (apokalyptō) — “to uncover, reveal, unveil.” Nepali: प्रकट गर्नु — Medium risk; distinct from “revelation” as private mystical disclosure (cf. Tantric initiatory revelation); here it is public, historical unveiling of a real person’s identity and deeds.
  • καιρός (kairos) — “the appointed/opportune time,” distinct from χρόνος (chronological time). Nepali: तोकिएको समय — Low-Medium risk; should convey God’s appointed timing, not astrological or karma-determined timing (cf. baseline’s rejection of भाग्य/किस्मत for “election”).

2 Thessalonians 2:7

Greek: τὸ γὰρ μυστήριον ἤδη ἐνεργεῖται τῆς ἀνομίας· μόνον ὁ κατέχων ἄρτι ἕως ἐκ μέσου γένηται.

  • μυστήριον (mystērion) — literal “a secret, mystery.” Semantic range in Paul: not an occult secret reserved for initiates, but a previously hidden divine reality now disclosed through revelation and proclamation. English variants: “mystery,” “secret.” Contextual meaning: “the mystery of lawlessness” — the hidden, already-operative principle of rebellion at work in the world, awaiting full unveiling. High risk. Nepali: रहस्य. Because रहस्य in Nepal’s Newar Tantric and Vajrayana Buddhist traditions specifically denotes esoteric teaching disclosed only to initiated practitioners, this term risks importing an initiatory-secrecy frame foreign to Paul’s usage, in which the μυστήριον is disclosed openly through apostolic proclamation, not through ritual initiation. A clarifying note is required at first occurrence distinguishing “mystery” as previously-hidden-now-proclaimed divine truth from tantric esoteric secrecy.
  • ἐνεργέω (energeō) — “to work, be at work, operate effectively.” Root of ἐνέργεια (v.9). Nepali: कार्यरत हुनु / कार्य गर्नु — Medium risk, must be distinguished from generic “energy” (a term with New Age/vitalist overtones in some translation traditions); here it denotes personal, purposive operation (of lawlessness, and later of Satan), not an impersonal force-field.
  • ὁ κατέχων (ho katechōn) — masculine present participle, “he who restrains” (contrast the neuter τὸ κατέχον in v.6). See discussion above; the same High-risk ambiguity-handling note applies, now with the added complication of the shift from neuter to masculine, which some interpreters take as evidence of a personal restrainer (angelic being, or the Spirit-empowered church) rather than merely an impersonal restraining condition.

2 Thessalonians 2:8

Greek: καὶ τότε ἀποκαλυφθήσεται ὁ ἄνομος, ὃν ὁ κύριος [Ἰησοῦς] ἀνελεῖ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ καὶ καταργήσει τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ,

  • ὁ ἄνομος (ho anomos) — substantival adjective, “the lawless one,” a compact synonym for “the man of lawlessness.” Nepali: अव्यवस्थित/अव्यवस्थाको जन — same अव्यवस्था root as ἀνομία above; Critical risk, consistency required with v.3’s rendering.
  • ἀναιρέω (anaireō) — “to take away, do away with, kill, destroy.” Nepali: नाश गर्नु / मार्नु — Medium risk; here God’s own decisive, effortless destruction of this figure by mere breath/word — must not read as combat between comparable powers (contrast avatar-versus-demon combat narratives), but as an act of absolute sovereign authority.
  • πνεῦμα τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ (pneuma tou stomatos autou) — “the breath of his mouth,” an OT allusion (Isaiah 11:4) to the Messiah’s word as an instrument of judgment. Nepali: उहाँको मुखको सासले — Low-Medium risk, standard idiom, worth a cross-reference note to Isaiah 11:4.
  • καταργέω (katargeō) — “to render idle/ineffective, abolish, bring to nothing.” Nepali: निष्क्रिय पार्नु / नष्ट पार्नु — Medium risk.
  • ἐπιφάνεια (epiphaneia) — literal “a shining forth, manifestation, appearing.” Semantic range: used in Hellenistic culture for a deity’s or ruler’s visible manifestation/state appearance; in the NT, for Christ’s incarnation appearing (2 Tim 1:10) and his future glorious return. English variants: “appearing,” “manifestation.” Contextual meaning here: paired with παρουσία as “the appearance of his coming” — an emphatic doubling for Christ’s climactic return. High risk, same collision class as παρουσία: must not be phrased so as to echo a ruler’s ceremonial “royal appearance” in a manner recalling Shah-era state ideology. Nepali: प्रकाशन / प्रकट हुनु — recommend आगमनको प्रकट हुनु (the appearing of his coming) to keep both Greek nouns visible in translation.

2 Thessalonians 2:9

Greek: οὗ ἐστιν ἡ παρουσία κατ’ ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ ἐν πάσῃ δυνάμει καὶ σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν ψεύδους

  • Σατανᾶς (Satanas) — transliterated Hebrew/Aramaic loanword, “adversary, accuser.” Established Nepali Christian term: शैतान. Critical risk only in the sense that consistency must be maintained; शैतान must not be replaced with generic Nepali/Hindu/Buddhist demonic-figure vocabulary (e.g., राक्षस, “demon/ogre of Hindu epic literature,” or मार, the Buddhist tempter-figure who assails the Buddha) — शैतान names the specific personal, fallen, God-opposing being of biblical theology.
  • ἐνέργεια (energeia) — “operative power, effective working.” See v.7 note. Here specifically “the energeia of Satan” — Satan’s purposive, effective operation behind this figure’s parousia. Nepali: शैतानको कार्य/प्रभाव — High risk; must not be rendered शैतानको शक्ति (see δύναμις below on the शक्ति prohibition).
  • δύναμις (dynamis) — “power, might, capability,” here counterfeit/demonic power accompanying false signs. Baseline reserves सामर्थ्य exclusively for “power of God” and forbids शक्ति due to the still-practiced Newar Tantric Śākta/Kumari tradition. High risk decision point: for consistency, this analysis recommends retaining सामर्थ्य even for this counterfeit power (rendering “with all power” as सबै सामर्थ्यका साथ), paired with an explicit qualifier — झूटा चिन्ह र आश्चर्यको सामर्थ्य (“power of false signs and wonders”) — rather than switching to शक्ति, which would risk importing the very Śākta/tantric association the baseline sought to avoid, now attached to Satan. A mandatory translator note must distinguish this counterfeit सामर्थ्य from परमेश्वरको सामर्थ्य (Romans 1:16); the text itself makes this contrast (it is a deceptive imitation of divine power).
  • σημεῖον (sēmeion) — “sign,” an act pointing beyond itself to a deeper reality. Nepali: चिन्ह — Low risk.
  • τέρας (teras) — “wonder, portent,” an act provoking astonishment. Nepali: अचम्मको कार्य — Medium risk; avoid चमत्कार (“miracle”) alone without qualification, since चमत्कार in ordinary Nepali usage carries positive, God-honoring connotations; here it is qualified as ψεύδους (“of falsehood”) — always render as झूटा चिन्ह र आश्चर्यहरू (false signs and wonders), never bare चमत्कार.
  • ψεῦδος (pseudos) — “falsehood, lie.” Nepali: झूट — Low risk.

2 Thessalonians 2:10

Semantic range: injustice, wrongdoing, moral wickedness — the negative counterpart to δικαιοσύνη. Critical risk of the same class as ἀνομία above. The natural Nepali calque अधर्म must again be rejected. Because baseline already establishes धार्मिकता (never धर्म) for “righteousness,” the negation must be built on that same approved root: अधार्मिकता (“un-righteousness,” from धार्मिक + अ-), never अधर्म. “Those who are perishing” (τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις) — Nepali नष्ट हुनेहरू / विनाशमा परेकाहरू, Medium-High risk, tied to the doctrine of God’s Righteous Judgment; must convey final, personal loss before a personal God, not impersonal karmic dissolution.
  • ἀγάπη τῆς ἀληθείας (agapē tēs alētheias) — “the love of the truth.” ἀγάπη: new curriculum term; Nepali प्रेम — Medium risk; प्रेम is the standard, well-established Nepali word for love (used throughout the Nepali NT, e.g., John 3:16), but Hindu bhakti devotional literature (Radha-Krishna prem-līlā) also uses प्रेम extensively for romantic/devotional divine love, so catechetical material should make explicit that “the love of the truth” here means a settled moral commitment to embrace revealed truth, not devotional-romantic sentiment. ἀλήθεια: “truth,” Nepali सत्य — Low risk, standard, already the established Nepali Bible rendering (cf. John 14:6).
  • σωτηρία / σῴζω (sōtēria / sōzō) — “salvation / to save.” [BASELINE — reuse उद्धार exactly.] Contextual note: this verse ties rejection of “the love of the truth” directly to forfeiting उद्धार — reinforcing salvation as a response to revealed truth, not an achievement or a liberation attained through effort/practice (again distinguishing from मोक्ष/निर्वाण per baseline).

2 Thessalonians 2:11

Greek: καὶ διὰ τοῦτο πέμπει αὐτοῖς ὁ θεὸς ἐνέργειαν πλάνης εἰς τὸ πιστεῦσαι αὐτοὺς τῷ ψεύδει,

  • πλάνη (planē) — literal “a wandering, straying.” Semantic range: error, delusion, deception — that which leads one astray. English variants: “delusion,” “error,” “strong delusion” (KJV). Contextual theological meaning: as a judicial act, God himself hands over those who rejected the truth to a “working of delusion,” a severe expression of the doctrine of God’s Righteous Judgment (judicial hardening, cf. Romans 1:24–28). High risk. Nepali: भ्रम. Must not be rendered माया — माया is a major technical term in Advaita Vedanta Hindu philosophy naming the cosmic illusion veiling ultimate reality (Brahman) from ordinary perception, and it also carries a related sense of delusion/attachment in Buddhist thought. Using माया here would wrongly suggest this passage teaches a metaphysical illusion-doctrine about the nature of reality itself, rather than describing a specific, judicial, historically located act of God against those who deliberately rejected truth. भ्रम (“confusion, error, delusion”) is the safer, non-technical alternative.
  • πέμπω (pempō) — “to send.” Nepali: पठाउनु — Low risk; note the same verb root elsewhere denotes gospel-sending mission (cf. baseline’s ἀποστολή/πέμπω note under “mission”); here the sense is negative/judicial rather than missional — context must disambiguate.
  • πιστεύω τῷ ψεύδει (pisteuō tō pseudei) — “to believe the lie.” Nepali: झूटलाई विश्वास गर्नु — reuses विश्वास [BASELINE root] but note the deliberately negative object; this is the dark mirror-image of saving faith, and translators must not accidentally soften “the lie” (τῷ ψεύδει, definite article — a specific, climactic lie, likely the lawless one’s self-deification claim of v.4) into a generic “a lie.”

2 Thessalonians 2:12

Greek: ἵνα κριθῶσιν πάντες οἱ μὴ πιστεύσαντες τῇ ἀληθείᾳ ἀλλὰ εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ.

  • κρίνω (krinō) — “to judge, to pass judgment on, to condemn.” Semantic range spans neutral evaluative judgment and forensic condemnation; here clearly the latter (divine condemnation). English variants: “condemned,” “judged.” High risk, core verb of the God’s Righteous Judgment doctrine. Nepali: दोषी ठहराउनु / न्याय गर्नु — should be distinguished contextually from धर्मी ठहराइने कार्य (justification, per baseline); this is its judicial opposite. Recommend दोषी ठहराइनु (“to be declared guilty/condemned”) when the forensic-condemnation sense is in view, paralleling the structure baseline already uses for justification (धर्मी ठहराइने कार्य).
  • εὐδοκέω (eudokeō) — “to take pleasure in, to delight in, to approve of.” Nepali: रुचाउनु / मन पराउनु — Low-Medium risk; here used ironically/negatively — they “delighted in” ἀδικία (see v.10 note; render consistently as अधार्मिकता, never अधर्म-based vocabulary). The verse’s structure (rejecting truth, delighting in unrighteousness) is the moral basis for their condemnation, underscoring judgment as response to willed rejection rather than an impersonal karmic mechanism.

αἱρέομαι (εἵλατο)
haireomai
haireomai (aorist εἵλατο)
to choose, select
to select for oneself, often of divine choice
”God chose you”
Ties directly to the baseline’s election doctrine — God’s sovereign, prior choice, not human achievement.reuse [BASELINE] परमेश्वरको छनोट (noun); verb छान्नुभयो — High.
ἀπαρχή (textual variant)
aparchē
aparchē
firstfruit
first portion, offering of the first harvest
”as firstfruits” (variant reading; some MSS read ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς, “from the beginning”)
Textual-critical note: translators must confirm base text (ἀπαρχήν vs. ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς) before rendering; affects nuance (Thessalonians as an early/first harvest of converts vs. God’s choice “from the beginning” i.e. eternally).Flag for base-text decision; Low translation risk once text is settled, but High exegetical-accuracy importance.
ἁγιασμὸς πνεύματος
hagiasmos pneumatos
hagiasmos pneumatos
sanctification of/by the Spirit
the Spirit’s sanctifying work
”sanctification by the Spirit”
The Spirit’s ongoing sanctifying work as the means by which election is realized in a life.reuse [BASELINE] पवित्रीकरण + पवित्र आत्मा — High.
πίστις ἀληθείας
pistis alētheias
pistis alētheias
faith/belief of/in the truth
trust that embraces revealed truth

peripoiēsis doxēs
obtaining/possessing of glory
the goal of gaining glory
”the obtaining of the glory”
The purpose of calling: sharing in Christ’s glory.reuse [BASELINE] महिमा — High.
παράδοσις
paradosis
paradosis
that which is handed down/over
tradition, teaching transmitted from one to another
”traditions,” “teachings"
"Stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us” (2:15) — the central term of the Standing-Firm-in-the-Traditions doctrine: specifically apostolic teaching (oral and written) about Christ, not inherited cultural custom.CRITICAL — see extended discussion below.
στήκω / κρατέω
stēkō / krateō
stēkō / krateō
to stand / to hold fast, grasp firmly
steadfastness / firm retention
”stand firm and hold fast”
Paired imperatives: settled conviction (stand) plus active retention (hold) of apostolic teaching.अडिग रहनु / दृढतासाथ समात्नु — Medium.
παρακαλέω / στηρίζω
parakaleō / stērizō
parakaleō / stērizō
to comfort/exhort / to establish, make firm
encouragement or consolation / strengthening
”comfort your hearts and establish you”
Benediction: God himself, having loved and given grace, now comforts and strengthens believers for the standing-firm just commanded.reuse [BASELINE] उत्साहित पार्नु (encouragement sense) — but for the specific “comfort” sense here, recommend adding a third context entry, सान्त्वना दिनु (“console/comfort”), alongside baseline’s existing उत्साहित पार्नु/बिन्ती गर्नु senses. स्थिर पार्नु for στηρίζω — Low-Medium.
ἔργον ἀγαθὸν καὶ λόγος
ergon agathon kai logos
ergon agathon kai logos
good work and word
righteous deed and speech
”every good work and word”
The comprehensive scope (deed and speech) of the stability God grants.असल काम र वचन — Low.

Extended note on παράδοσις (paradosis), “tradition” — Critical risk: This is the single most culturally hazardous new term in the letter. The natural, unmarked Nepali word for “tradition” is परम्परा, but परम्परा in ordinary Nepali usage overwhelmingly denotes inherited ethnic, caste, and Hindu ritual custom (जातीय परम्परा, धार्मिक परम्परा) — precisely the kind of inherited social order that the gospel, per baseline’s righteousness/law entries, actively relativizes and that Nepal’s own former Muluki Ain legal code once entrenched. An unqualified instruction to new, often first-generation converts to “hold fast to your traditions” risks being heard as counsel to retain pre-conversion customary or caste practice — the exact inverse of Paul’s meaning. Paul’s παράδοσις here is narrowly and exclusively the apostolic gospel teaching he personally delivered, whether spoken or written (2:15b: “whether by our spoken word or by our letter”). Recommend rendering with a disambiguating qualifier every time it occurs in this doctrine: हामीले तिमीहरूलाई सिकाएका शिक्षा/परम्परा (“the teaching/tradition we taught you”) rather than bare परम्परा, and consider a standing translator’s footnote at first occurrence distinguishing apostolic tradition from cultural/religious custom. This decision requires human theologian review at every occurrence per escalation rules.

Chapter 3

Chapter 3 requests prayer (vv.1–5), addresses church discipline toward the idle/disorderly in light of Paul’s own example (vv.6–13), instructs on handling the unrepentant (vv.14–15), and closes with a benediction and Paul’s autograph (vv.16–18).

ataktōs peripateō
to walk in disorderly/undisciplined fashion

”walking in idleness,” “walking irresponsibly”
Behavioral discipline issue tied to (mis)handling of eschatological expectation — some had stopped working, apparently believing the Day of the Lord’s imminence excused ordinary responsibility.अनुशासनहीन आचरण / अल्छी गरी हिँड्ने — Low-Medium (new term); links Standing-Firm-in-Traditions doctrine to concrete communal-life practice, not just doctrinal assent.
ἐργάζομαι

periergazomai
to busy oneself about others’ affairs
meddling, busybody behavior
”busybodies”
A specific vice tied to the idleness problem.अनावश्यक चासो राख्नु — Low.
