Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis — 1 Timothy (English → Nepali)
Purpose
This document provides the full doctrine matrix for 1 Timothy, covering every chapter (1–6) and every major section, consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json. The core passage, 1 Timothy 3:1–13 (Qualifications for Church Leadership), is the theological anchor of this curriculum but not its scope boundary. Every doctrine listed here is drawn directly from the registry (same doctrine names, same risk tiers) and is cross-referenced against the full text of 1 Timothy so that no chapter is silently omitted from analysis.
Risk tiers follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions exactly:
- Critical — Mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
- High — Mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk. Human theologian review required.
- Medium — Mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning. Native speaker review recommended.
- Low — Mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding or imprecision. Automated review sufficient.
Doctrine Matrix (Full Book, 1 Timothy 1–6)
| # | Doctrine | Risk | Nepali Doctrine Name | Supporting Passages (1 Timothy) | Translation Risk (grounded reason) | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching | High | खरो सिद्धान्त र झूटा शिक्षाको भिन्नता | 1:3-11; 1:18-20; 4:1-7; 4:16; 6:3-5; 6:20-21 | सिद्धान्त avoids the caste-code-linked धर्म root, but Nepali Hindu/Buddhist pluralism (many valid दर्शन/पन्थ) risks readers treating “different doctrine” as merely another equally valid path rather than a departure from the one apostolic gospel. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons) | Critical | मण्डलीको अगुवाइको योग्यता (प्राचीन र सेवक) | 3:1-13; 5:17-22 | अध्यक्ष/सेवक must remain tested, congregationally-recognized, non-hereditary, non-caste, non-sacral offices; collision risk with पुरोहित (caste-bound Brahmin priesthood), लामा (monastic/reincarnation-linked hierarchy), and गुरु (devotional master-disciple bond). | Human theologian |
| 3 | Christ as the One Mediator | Critical | ख्रीष्ट एक मात्र मध्यस्थ | 2:5-6 | The numeral “one” (एक मध्यस्थ) must retain absolute exclusivity against Nepal’s dense living culture of ritual intermediaries — पुरोहित performing puja, गुरु guiding toward moksha, lamas/Tantric specialists mediating spiritual power. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Public Worship and Prayer | High | सार्वजनिक आराधना र प्रार्थना | 2:1-10 | Direct, unmediated prayer to a personal God must not collapse into पूजा (ritual worship performed through a priest); modesty/self-control instructions must not read as merit-earning ascetic renunciation. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Order and Roles in Public Worship (Men and Women) | Critical | आराधनामा पुरुष र महिलाको भूमिका | 2:11-15; 3:11 | Two genuinely disputed lexical forks (αὐθεντέω at 2:12; γυναῖκας as “wives” or “women deacons” at 3:11) must never be silently resolved by default rendering; 2:15 must never read as works-salvation through childbirth. | Human theologian |
| 6 | The Church as Pillar of Truth | Critical | सत्यको खम्बाको रूपमा मण्डली | 3:14-16 | खम्बा (pillar) risks visualizing literal ornate Hindu temple architecture rather than the church’s function of upholding revealed truth; रहस्य (mystery) collides with Kathmandu Valley Tantric/Vajrayana esoteric secret-knowledge tradition. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Godliness and Contentment | High | भक्ति र सन्तोष | 4:7-8; 6:3-10; 6:17-19 | भक्ति must always be anchored to परमेश्वर/ख्रीष्ट or readers import Hindu Bhakti-marga devotional theology (multiple chosen deities, emotional devotion as itself salvific); “means of gain” (6:5) directly names prosperity-gospel-style distortion present in the Nepali church context. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Care for Widows and the Household of Faith | High | विधवाहरू र विश्वासको घरानाको हेरचाह | 5:1-16 | Nepal’s historical Hindu widow stigma (remarriage restriction, distinctive dress, marginalization, and the historic practice of sati, abolished 1920) stands in sharp contrast to the text’s dignifying, structured care and must be made explicit, not assumed. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Guarding the Deposit of Faith | Critical | विश्वासको थाती जोगाउने जिम्मेवारी | 1:18-19; 6:12-14; 6:20-21 | ज्ञान (“knowledge,” 6:20) is soteriologically central in both Hindu jñāna-mārga and Buddhist prajñā traditions; “falsely-called knowledge” must always be qualified or readers may import a knowledge-as-liberation framework the letter itself rejects. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Exclusive Monotheism (the Only God) | High | एकमात्र परमेश्वरको आस्था | 1:17; 2:5; 6:15-16 | Repeated “only God”/“only Sovereign” claims directly confront Nepal’s historic multi-deity Hindu pantheon and its former constitutional status as “the world’s only Hindu Kingdom” until 2007; must not be softened. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Apostasy and Perseverance in the Faith | High | विश्वासबाट तर्किनु र स्थिर रहनु | 1:19-20; 4:1-2; 6:10; 6:21 | Apostasy must be taught as a decisive, personal turning from a personal God, not a gradual drift correctable across future lives (a shared Hindu/Buddhist karmic-merit framework). | Human theologian |
| 12 | Spiritual Warfare and the Reality of Satan | Critical | आत्मिक युद्ध र शैतानको वास्तविकता | 1:20; 3:6-7; 3:11; 4:1 | शैतान must be the one, personal adversary of God — never one of many Hindu asuras/rakshasas, never the Buddhist tempter-figure Mara, never collapsed into indigenous jhankri भूत-प्रेत ghost-affliction folk religion. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Prayer for Civil Authorities | Medium | शासकहरूको निम्ति प्रार्थना | 2:1-2 | Prayer for “kings and all in high positions” carries distinct resonance given Nepal’s former divinely-legitimated monarchy (until 2008); must be taught as peaceable posture, not political endorsement. | Native speaker review |
| 14 | Household and Social Order (Masters and Bondservants) | High | घरपरिवार र सामाजिक व्यवस्था (मालिक र दास) | 6:1-2; 3:4-5; 3:12 | δοῦλος/δεσπότης must be taught within specific first-century social context, without appearing to endorse Nepal’s own historical Kamaiya bonded-labor system (abolished only in 2000) or any caste-linked servitude. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Confession of Faith and Assurance | High | विश्वासको अंगीकार र निश्चयता | 6:12-16 | Timothy’s “good confession” echoes the baseline’s Critical-risk Romans 10:9 “Jesus is Lord” confession and must be taught with identical doctrinal weight, not as a lesser or separate act. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Eschatological Hope (Eternal Life and Christ’s Appearing) | High | अन्तिम आशा (अनन्त जीवन र ख्रीष्टको प्रकटन) | 6:12; 6:14; 6:19 | अनन्त जीवन must never be rendered or associated with मोक्ष (Hindu liberation from rebirth) or निर्वाण (Buddhist cessation of self); it is unending, personal fellowship with the living God through Christ. | Human theologian |

This distribution reflects the doctrinally dense character of 1 Timothy 3:1-13 and its surrounding material: church-office doctrine, mediatorial exclusivity, gender roles in worship, and the church’s truth-bearing identity are all Critical-risk in the Nepali context because each intersects a currently practiced, culturally visible religious structure (caste priesthood, guru-lama mediation, temple architecture, esoteric initiatory transmission) rather than a merely historical or abstract theological competitor.
This document extends, and does not contradict, doctrine_risk_registry.json (1 Timothy) and the Romans baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json. See 08_core_glossary.md for full term-level detail and 04_comparative_theology.md for cross-tradition interpretive comparison.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons)
Nepali name: मण्डलीको अगुवाइको योग्यता (प्राचीन र सेवक)
Key terms: overseer, deacon, elder, manage_lead, husband_of_one_wife, self_control, apt_to_teach, above_reproach, double_honor
Review routing: Human theologian
अध्यक्ष (overseer) and सेवक (deacon) are both deliberately neutral, functional, tested, term-limited office-titles. अध्यक्ष must never collapse into पुरोहित (caste-linked Hindu priestly office), लामा (Buddhist monastic hierarchy), or गुरु (devotional master-disciple bond). सेवक must never be read with its ordinary Hindu devotional sense of a deity’s or guru’s devotee-servant. Both collisions would fundamentally misrepresent these as accountable, congregationally-tested offices rather than sacral or devotional roles.
Christ as the One Mediator
Nepali name: ख्रीष्ट एक मात्र मध्यस्थ
Key terms: mediator, ransom, savior
Review routing: Human theologian
The numeral ‘one’ (εἷς μεσίτης) must be preserved with full exclusivity as एक मध्यस्थ. Nepali religious life includes many culturally live intermediary figures — Hindu priests (पुरोहित) performing puja on a worshiper’s behalf, gurus, and Himalayan Buddhist/Newar Tantric lamas and ritual specialists mediating access to divine or spiritual power. Any softening of the numerical exclusivity would directly reopen the very intermediary system this verse excludes.
Order and Roles in Public Worship (Men and Women)
Nepali name: आराधनामा पुरुष र महिलाको भूमिका
Key terms: quietness, exercise_authority, women_wives_deacons, saved_through_childbearing
Review routing: Human theologian
Two genuinely disputed lexical/interpretive forks (αὐθεντέω’s neutral-vs-negative sense at 2:12; γυναῖκας as ‘wives’ or ‘women deacons’ at 3:11) carry materially different ecclesiological implications and must never be silently resolved by default rendering. 2:15’s clause must never be taught as works-salvation through childbirth, which would collide with the Critical baseline doctrine of Grace and Justification by Faith.
The Church as Pillar of Truth
Nepali name: सत्यको खम्बाको रूपमा मण्डली
Key terms: household_of_god, church_of_living_god, pillar, foundation_buttress, mystery, truth
Review routing: Human theologian
‘Church of the living God’ sharpens the contrast between the one true, personal God and lifeless idols or impersonal ultimate-reality concepts. ‘Pillar’ imagery is culturally vivid given Nepal’s Hindu temple architecture and must be taught as the church’s function of upholding revealed truth, not a physical shrine structure. ‘Mystery’ (रहस्य) directly collides with Kathmandu Valley Tantric/Vajrayana esoteric secret-knowledge tradition and must always be qualified as truth openly revealed to all believers.
Guarding the Deposit of Faith
Nepali name: विश्वासको थाती जोगाउने जिम्मेवारी
Key terms: deposit_entrusted, falsely_called_knowledge, confession, empty_chatter, sound_doctrine
Review routing: Human theologian
ज्ञान (‘knowledge,’ 6:20) is a major, doctrinally load-bearing term in both Hindu jñāna-mārga and Buddhist prajñā/enlightenment soteriology, where spiritual knowledge itself functions as a means of liberation. Paul’s rejection of ‘falsely-called knowledge’ must never be left unqualified, or Nepali readers may import a knowledge-as-liberation framework directly opposed to the letter’s own point. थाती (deposit) is a concrete, secular Nepali legal-trust term chosen precisely to avoid any competing religious connotation.
Spiritual Warfare and the Reality of Satan
Nepali name: आत्मिक युद्ध र शैतानको वास्तविकता
Key terms: devil_satan, deceiving_spirits, teachings_of_demons
Review routing: Human theologian
शैतान must be taught as the one, personal spiritual adversary of God and his people — not one of many Hindu asuras/rakshasas, not the Buddhist tempter-deity Mara held by Nepal’s Newar and Himalayan Buddhist communities, and not an impersonal illusion-principle (māyā). δαιμόνιον (‘demon’) must be rendered दुष्ट आत्मा rather than भूत-प्रेत, the everyday Nepali folk-religious term for ghosts/spirits addressed by jhankri shamans, to keep this distinct from indigenous animist spirit-affliction frameworks.
High Risk Doctrines
Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
Nepali name: खरो सिद्धान्त र झूटा शिक्षाको भिन्नता
Key terms: sound_doctrine, teach_different_doctrine, myths_and_genealogies, depart_from_faith, trustworthy_saying, truth
Review routing: Human theologian
सिद्धान्त is used throughout specifically to avoid the caste-code-linked धर्म root forbidden across this pipeline. Myths/genealogies language (1:4) must be taught as targeting speculative distortion of the apostolic gospel, not Nepali Puranic or Jataka narrative traditions generally.
Public Worship and Prayer
Nepali name: सार्वजनिक आराधना र प्रार्थना
Key terms: intercession, thanksgiving, self_control, respectable
Review routing: Human theologian
Prayer for rulers and all people (2:1-2) reflects direct, unmediated access to a personal God, distinct from ritual puja worship performed through a priest at a shrine. Modesty/self-control instructions must be taught as ordinary Spirit-produced discipline, not merit-earning ascetic renunciation prominent in Nepali Hindu/Jain/Buddhist practice.
Godliness and Contentment
Nepali name: भक्ति र सन्तोष
Key terms: godliness, love_of_money, means_of_gain, contentment, greedy_for_dishonest_gain, ruin_and_destruction
Review routing: Human theologian
भक्ति (godliness) is deliberately distinct from the baseline’s rejection of भक्ति as an alternative for ‘faith’; every occurrence must be explicitly anchored to परमेश्वर/ख्रीष्ट so readers do not import Hindu Bhakti-marga devotional theology (multiple personal deities, devotional emotionalism as a path to liberation). The rejection of godliness as ‘a means of gain’ (6:5) is directly relevant wherever prosperity-gospel-style teaching is present in the Nepali church context.
Care for Widows and the Household of Faith
Nepali name: विधवाहरू र विश्वासको घरानाको हेरचाह
Key terms: widow, wife_of_one_husband, hospitable, bondservant
Review routing: Human theologian
Nepali Hindu tradition has historically imposed significant social stigma on widows (remarriage restriction, distinctive dress, marginalization, and the historic practice of sati, abolished 1920). This doctrine’s positive, structured, dignifying church-provided care for widows stands in real cultural contrast to that history and should be taught with that background made explicit, not assumed.
Exclusive Monotheism (the Only God)
Nepali name: एकमात्र परमेश्वरको आस्था
Key terms: god, only_sovereign, king_of_kings
Review routing: Human theologian
Repeated exclusive-monotheism claims (‘the only God,’ ‘the only Sovereign’) directly confront Nepal’s historic multi-deity Hindu pantheon and its former constitutional identity as ‘the world’s only Hindu Kingdom’ until 2007. Must be preserved without softening, consistent with the baseline’s caution on परमेश्वर.
Apostasy and Perseverance in the Faith
Nepali name: विश्वासबाट तर्किनु र स्थिर रहनु
Key terms: depart_from_faith, devil_satan, deceiving_spirits, teachings_of_demons
Review routing: Human theologian
Apostasy is described as departure from a specific, revealed apostolic faith, not failure to progress through a cycle of rebirths or a gradual loss of accumulated merit shared by Hindu and Buddhist ethical frameworks. Must be taught as a decisive, personal turning away from a personal God.
Household and Social Order (Masters and Bondservants)
Nepali name: घरपरिवार र सामाजिक व्यवस्था (मालिक र दास)
Key terms: bondservant, master_human, submission, manage_lead
Review routing: Human theologian
Given Nepal’s own historical bonded-labor system (the Kamaiya system, formally abolished only in 2000) and its ongoing social memory, δοῦλος must be taught within its specific first-century social context, without appearing to endorse any form of bonded servitude, historical or contemporary, in Nepal.
Confession of Faith and Assurance
Nepali name: विश्वासको अंगीकार र निश्चयता
Key terms: confession, eternal_life, king_of_kings
Review routing: Human theologian
Timothy’s ‘good confession’ (6:12-13) echoes the same confessional pattern as the baseline’s Critical-risk Romans 10:9 ‘Jesus is Lord’ confession and must be taught with doctrinal consistency alongside it, not as a separate or lesser act of allegiance.
Eschatological Hope (Eternal Life and Christ’s Appearing)
Nepali name: अन्तिम आशा (अनन्त जीवन र ख्रीष्टको प्रकटन)
Key terms: eternal_life, appearing
Review routing: Human theologian
अनन्त जीवन must be distinguished both from Hindu concepts of the ātman’s eventual union with Brahman across cycles of rebirth and from Buddhist frameworks in which continuous existence itself is the problem to be escaped through निर्वाण; it is unending, personal fellowship with the living God through Christ, never मोक्ष or निर्वाण.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Prayer for Civil Authorities
Nepali name: शासकहरूको निम्ति प्रार्थना
Key terms: intercession, thanksgiving
Review routing: Native speaker review
Prayer for ‘kings and all who are in high positions’ carries distinct resonance in a country whose head of state was, until 2008, a divinely-legitimated monarch; must be taught as the church’s peaceable posture toward all civil authority, not political endorsement of any particular regime, past or present.
