Cross-Reference Analysis

Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Luke 1–24

Purpose

This document executes Phase 1 Step 3: a full cross-reference matrix covering every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every meaningful parallel to the Romans curriculum already established in Nepali, across the entire Gospel of Luke, chapter 1 through chapter 24. It builds directly on 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md and must be read alongside them. Where a term discussed here already has an established Nepali rendering (baseline or Luke-specific), that rendering is assumed and not re-derived.

Full-book coverage note: every chapter of Luke is represented below. Chapters with fewer distinct OT quotations (e.g., ch. 13) are still given a row set; no chapter is silently skipped.

Citation Normalization Conventions

All citations in this document and in downstream Phase 2 artifacts follow this format: BookName Chapter:Verse (e.g., Luke 4:18, Isaiah 61:1-2, Genesis 15:6), using Arabic numerals for chapter and verse per the baseline’s YouVersion-alignment convention (translation_memory.json / 12_ai_translation_requirements.md, Cross-Reference Preservation Rules). Book names in Nepali-language output must follow the Nepali Bible Society convention. The baseline supplied Nepali forms for Romans, Genesis, Psalms, Isaiah, Habakkuk, Joel. This analysis requires the following additional forms:

English BookNepali FormNote
Exodusप्रस्थान
Leviticusलेवी
Numbersगन्ती
Deuteronomyव्यवस्थाCollision flag: identical in written form to the baseline doctrinal term व्यवस्था (νόμος, “the Law”). See rule below.
1 Samuel / 2 Samuel१ शमूएल / २ शमूएलUse Arabic ordinal (1/2) if aligning with digital/YouVersion numbering conventions; confirm final house style with reviewer.
1 Kings / 2 Kings१ राजा / २ राजाSame ordinal-numeral note as above.

Deuteronomy citation rule (Medium risk, native speaker review): because the book title व्यवस्था is graphically and phonetically identical to the baseline’s doctrinal term for νόμος (“the Law”), every citation of the book of Deuteronomy must be immediately followed by its numeral reference (e.g., “व्यवस्था ६:५” / “Deuteronomy 6:5”) so the citation is unambiguously recognizable as a book-and-verse reference rather than an abstract doctrinal statement about “the Law.” Never leave a bare, unnumbered व्यवस्था where a Deuteronomy citation is intended.

Part 4 — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations

These rules govern any OT text quoted, alluded to, or thematically shared between Luke and the Romans curriculum (or recurring more than once within Luke itself). All are flagged for human theologian review at first occurrence per curriculum, per the baseline’s Critical/High escalation rules.

  1. Leviticus 19:18 (“Love your neighbor as yourself”) — quoted at Luke 10:27 and Romans 13:9. Must render identically in both curricula. Lock the agreed Nepali wording in translation memory before Phase 2 processing of either book.
  2. Genesis 15:6 (imputed righteousness, quoted at Romans 4:3) — not directly quoted in Luke, but Luke’s repeated Abraham references (Luke 3:8; 13:16; 16:22-31; 19:9) must use a consistent अब्राहाम name form and करार vocabulary so a learner moving between curricula recognizes the same covenant figure and promise.
  3. Psalm 118:22 (cornerstone, quoted at Luke 20:17) — thematically parallel to Isaiah 28:16/8:14 quoted at Romans 9:33; both concern the rejected-stone Christological image. Coordinate the Nepali rendering (कुनाको मुख्य ढुङ्गा) if both texts appear in a combined study module.
  4. Psalm 118:26 (“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”) — quoted twice within Luke itself, at Luke 13:35 and Luke 19:38. Must render identically at both occurrences before any cross-curriculum consideration.
  5. Isaiah 61:1-2 / 58:6 (core passage, Luke 4:18-19) — this exact citation does not recur in Romans, but its “Spirit of the Lord…anointed” language directly parallels Romans 1:4’s “Spirit of holiness” and Romans 1:16’s “power of God for salvation.” The Luke-specific renderings अभिषेक, अनुग्रहको वर्ष, and सामर्थ्य must never conflict with the baseline power_of_god/grace renderings already fixed for Romans.
  6. Deuteronomy 6:5 (“Love the Lord your God…”) quoted alongside Leviticus 19:18 at Luke 10:27. See the Deuteronomy citation-collision rule in the Citation Normalization Conventions above: always retain chapter:verse numerals immediately after व्यवस्था when citing the book.
  7. Psalm 110:1 — quoted at Luke 20:42-43 and alluded at Luke 22:69; not directly quoted in Romans, but foundational to the baseline’s lordship_of_christ doctrine. प्रभु must not vary when this Psalm is in view.
  8. Psalm 32:1-2 — quoted at Romans 4:7-8; thematically identical to Luke’s repeated forgiveness-of-sins vocabulary (Luke 1:77; 3:3; 5:20-24; 7:47-49; 24:47). No direct quotation exists in Luke, but पापको क्षमा must remain the single consistent Nepali term across both curricula.
  9. Isaiah 53 (Suffering Servant) — alluded at Luke 22:37; 24:26-27; directly quoted (Isaiah 53:1) at Romans 10:16. सेवक and दुःख भोग्नु (“to suffer”) vocabulary should be reserved consistently for this typological identification across both curricula.
  10. Joel 2:32 — quoted at Romans 10:13 (“everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”); thematically identical to Luke’s universal proclamation formulas (Luke 2:10-11; 3:6; 24:47). The “all/every” (सबै/जोसुकै) universality must never be qualified or narrowed in either curriculum.

Summary Notes for Phase 1 Step 4 and Beyond

  • Every chapter of Luke (1–24) has been reviewed for OT quotations, allusions, messianic typology, and Romans-curriculum parallels; no chapter was silently omitted.
  • The Deuteronomy/व्यवस्था title collision is a genuinely new citation-format risk not previously documented in the Romans baseline package and must be carried into the updated doctrine_risk_registry.json and 12_ai_translation_requirements.md extensions for Luke.
  • Ten specific shared-quotation rendering-consistency rules (Part 4) require translation-memory lock-in before Phase 2 begins, especially rule 1 (Leviticus 19:18, shared verbatim with Romans 13:9).
  • This document, together with 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md, is ready to inform 10_biblical_theme_map.md and the subsequent translation memory and doctrine risk registry extensions.
